A Squib is someone who was born into a wizarding family but hasn't got any magic powers. Kind of the opposite of Muggle-born wizards, but Squibs are quite unusual.
BASIC DESCRIPTION OF A SQUIB

A Squib, also known as a wizard-born, is a non-magical person who is born to at least one magical parent. Squibs are, in essence, "wizard-born Muggles". They are rare and are looked upon with a degree of disdain by some witches and wizards, particularly pure-bloods. Muggle-born witches and wizards are descended from Squibs who married Muggles: the magical ability unexpectedly resurfaces many generations later.

Overview

A Squib is a human who is born with at least one magical parent, but does not inherit magic from said parent. A wizard or witch child would typically show signs of magical abilities at seven years old; any such child who does not is leaning on being a Squib (though they are possibly late-bloomers).

Squibs are rare, even just one being born into a family. This is why the case of Thaddeus Thurkell's seven Squib sons is particularly noteworthy.

Squibs are incapable of practising magic in any way, as Argus Filch found out when he attempted to use the supplementary course Kwikspell, which was designed to improve inadequate wizarding skills, to no effect as he had no magical skills to improve upon.

History

In the 1600s, Isolt Sayre, the famous founder of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, gave birth to a daughter whom she named Martha. Martha was named after her paternal grandmother and while her twin sister Rionach was magical, Martha was not. Martha was the only one in the family to be born a Squib, and because of that she considered her upbringing at Ilvermorny to be painful. Martha went on to marry and lived as a No-Maj.

In 1858 Angus Buchanan never received a Hogwarts acceptance letter, but got as far as the Sorting Hat, before he was exposed as a Squib. In sheer desperation, he threw himself ahead of a girl whose name had been called and placed the Hat upon his head. The horror of the moment when the Hat announced kindly that the boy beneath it was a good-hearted chap, but no wizard, would never be forgotten by those who witnessed it. Angus took off the hat and left the hall with tears streaming down his face. This had never happened before and it has never happened since. Angus being a Squib caused him to become estranged from his family.

In 1900, Angus wrote an inspirational book, titled My Life as a Squib. His book helped break the taboos of Squib culture in wizarding society. Angus ended up becoming a star in the Muggle sport of Scottish rugby, and his sporting talents became so well known that wizarding kind fell in love with his inspirational story, not to mention developing an odd interest in rugby.

While Eugenia Jenkins was Minister for Magic from 1968 to 1975, Squib Rights marches began to surface. However, these marches attracted pure-blood riots.

Different from Muggles

In addition to being born into magical rather than Muggle families, Squibs are different from Muggles by their knowledge of the wizarding world. They are able to see things that are hidden from the Muggles: certain magical objects and creatures that can help them. Argus Filch, as well as Arabella Figg, have formed wizarding-like relationships with cats that, in the case of the latter, have been cross-bred with Kneazles.

Squibs should also be contrasted with the Muggle relatives of witches and wizards. Muggle parents, siblings, spouses etc. are simply Muggles who happen to know about the magical world.

Despite the differences between Squibs and Muggles they usually have a stronger affinity with each other than with wizards. For obvious reasons, Squibs usually lead Muggle lifestyles, and are known to be sent to Muggle schools. Some voluntarily choose to cut themselves off from the wizarding world altogether. Isolt Sayre's Squib daughter Martha chose to distance herself from magic entirely. Others live as allies to wizardkind and others, living somewhere in the middle, choose to work with wizards but are not very neighbourly to them.

Attitude toward Squibs

The Ministry of Magic does not keep records of Squib births, a sign of wizard society's general disregard for them. They can, however, check if a person is a Squib using their parents' names, as demonstrated in 1995 during the disciplinary hearing of Harry Potter. The common practice with Squibs is to send them off to Muggle schools as children and encourage them to integrate with the Muggle community, which is much kinder than letting them live in the magical world where they will always be treated as second-class citizens. Some, however, choose to remain in the wizarding world regardless. Some pure-blood families, such as the Blacks, disown any Squib members and remove them from their family trees, as they removed Marius Black. Even Orford Umbridge, an unenthusiastic wizard who was tolerant enough to marry a Muggle woman, would come to despise his son for being a Squib. John Buchanan, proud of his wizarding ancestry, came to loathe his son for being a squib and violently disowned him, even forbidding his other ten children from seeing him again.

Even families that are tolerant of Muggles and Muggle-borns seem to regard Squibs poorly. Also, many wizarding families are anxious to see early signs of magical ability and are upset by the prospect that a member might be a Squib. Neville Longbottom was thought to be a Squib by his relatives because of this, though he proved to be magical. Similarly, Merope Gaunt was called a Squib by her father Marvolo as a slur, due to her poor magical abilities, inhibited by her fear of her father and brother. Some magical families would often blame any Muggle parents for a Squib's birth, as Orford Umbridge and his witch daughter would blame his Muggle wife, Ellen Cracknell, for being the fault of the son being born a Squib. However, the wizarding world did set up at least one organisation to support Squibs, called Society for the Support of Squibs. Karl Jenkins rudely called Albus Potter "Slytherin Squib" due to his demonstration of poor magical skills in his first year at Hogwarts.

It is unclear as to Lord Voldemort's attitude towards Squibs. He had personally noted throughout his life that he aims to purge Muggle-born wizards and witches for "stealing" magic. However, as Argus Filch was allowed to remain in Hogwarts, it is likely they were not prosecuted as blood traitors.

Because of their low statuses in the magical community, any Squibs who chose to remain in the Wizarding world may develop a bitter personality towards witches and wizards. Argus Filch, in particular, was rather unpleasant with most students and would be rather harsh on them; Ron Weasley believed that Filch's Squib status may be the cause of this attitude. Martha Steward II found it very painful in living among magical folks that she eventually severed ties with the community to assimilate into Muggle society.

Squibs, at times, tried to fight for their rights, as they marched for equality in around 1968 or 1969. However, pure-blood extremists would absolutely refuse to give anything respectful towards Squibs, and even launched an attack against the marchers that led to riots. Even in the 1990s, the Ministry refused to keep track of Squib births, showing a disregard for Squibs' attempt to earn their rights.

Behind the scenes

The term likely comes from the English expression "a damp squib" (dud firecracker), an expected delight that disappoints.

The word squib also refers to an incomplete or insufficient discharge of a firearm.

The word could also be a pun on "skip", referring to the fact that the person was "skipped" by magic. In fact, at least one book series (Terry Goodkind's The Sword of Truth) used the word in a meaning analogous to Squib in several books.

The Star Wars series also uses the term Squib as the name of an alien species.

Two Squibs (both are minor characters) seen in the series are Arabella Figg and Argus Filch. Both seem to love cats and have the same initials.

It is unknown what the term would be for the non-magical offspring of a Squib and a Muggle.

Mafalda, a deleted character, was set to be the child of a possible Squib and a Muggle. However since the character was cut this information has yet to be confirmed.

The shadow was made up of ashes, dark and dirty as soot, in the figure of a human. The figure paused on the stairway for a moment before it continued to walk down clumsily. Ashes dropped from the figure as it moved. Then the incredible happened; the figure had shaken off the ashes and revealed the underlying clothes and skin. It had the contours of a human. When it finally came down to the long hall, it almost appeared like a human.
Everyone held their weapons on guard but was curious at the same time until the 'thing' finally revealed itself as a tired-looking, middle-aged man.
The middle-aged man looked about forty years of age, his hairstyle and clothes suggested that he was the wealthy during the Medieval Period. The man was still in a stupor. But he quickly came out of it and stared at the strangers, wide-eyed.
The man froze for a few seconds before he screamed, turned and ran back up the stairs onto the upper floor.
Hao Ren snapped. "Go and get him!"
A white shadow lunged up the stairs; Lily had caught up with the man. She yanked a brick at the man and knocked him down. Hao Ren's heart missed a beat when he saw Lily's action; she could have broken up the man if he were made up of ashes.
The man fell, but he quickly got back to his feet as if nothing had happened.
Before the man ran again, Lily lunged forward and overpowered him, and dragged her 'trophy' back down. "I've got him!"
Lily tied the man up with a rope. The man looked at Hao Ren, terrified. "You... what are you going to do? Are you humans or ghosts?"
Hao Ren thought he had the wizard, but this man did not sound like one. He asked the man, "Who are you?"
The man replied in fear. "I... I'm the seigneur here, Heimerwin Ahtisaari..."

The story recounts the new life of Nero Miki, who had died and reincarnated into a new world as a Halloween Cat. Nero finds himself born into poor circumstances and must find his own way to survive in a fantasy themed world filled with magic, monsters, and prejudice.

The sound of muggles walking to their jobs and starting their day in the bustling city of London. She looked at the sky, the flying birds and the floating clouds, and her gaze returned to the train ticket she have.

Platform 9 3/4.

"Where on earth would I look for a platform nine and three-quarters? There is no such platform having a three-quarters attached to it!" a girl with a waist length raven-black hair wearing a knee-length skirt, a sweater and a peculiar glasses mumbled. 

Ezereath Scarlet- Hunter, an 11 year old witch with a witch mother and muggle father, accepted in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, is now lost in the train station.

She bought her school supplies days ago using an exclusive online shop for witch and wizards and it only arrived yesterday so she was a bit tired last night getting ready.


Pushing her luggage and stopping at a nearby resting area, her eyes did not stop looking around for clues.

Using magic in the presence of muggles is not allowed, and so the spells she secretly learned were all useless.


Why did I not ask my parents to send me off? I thought I'll go to school using a portal or a broom but I did not expect this. Flying ... ah ... that would be cool...

There is no pill for regrets... unless of course one can find the time turner artifact. Which was banned years ago. And was confiscated by the Ministry of Magic. All she can do is to sharpen her eyes to observe and strain her ears to listen to the people around her.

It would be impossible for me to ask people where the heck that platform is, right? They'll call me a sick person to look for a non-existent platform.

Minutes have passed and she felt weird sitting alone without anyone to talk to in the station. She brought out a prop which was her phone, read some novels and comics to pass time while listening to conversations and observing the people near the platform 9.

This novel already updated. That annoying officer...

Oh, another update... hope Happy would defeat them...

My stones weren't enough. Why did I chose to read multiple novels?

"Just leading me to the platform will suffice!" 


A peculiar conversation was heard nearby by Ezereath between a man and his son which made her attention focus on them. It was not really unusual for kids riding trains by themselves nowadays but when she looked at his direction, his outfit was...

... kinda similar to the cloak she is keeping inside her trunk.

A cosplayer? A wizard character? Is it from a game, a movie or a series?


"And I can wear this when I arrive there, why let me wear now?" the boy continued.

She listened to their conversation, not even thinking that what she is doing is kinda inappropriate. But she did it to other people so her guilt was lessened.

This is for the sake of education!

"Are there any cosplaying event nearby? Which character is that kid copying?" a girl asked the boy beside her. It seems like the girl was into anime.

Oh, a comrade spotted.

The boy's eyes gave his father a 'now-you-see?' look. 

"New students like you often get lost in looking for the platform unless there is a guardian leading you. For example--"

The man looked at Ezereath's direction and signalled her to come closer. Not wanting to not follow the orders of an elder, despite of the person being a stranger, she can only push her luggage and approach them.

She did not find them suspicious and an idea immediately flashed in her mind awhile ago. They look like wizards, not an amateur cosplayer with a parent. It seems like the boy over there is also a 1st year student like me.

And after that conversation, she already decided to approach them so this situation is kind of an ideal scenario for her.

"She is a new student like you. But unlike you, she does not have anyone to lead her to the platform, thus she can only rely to herself in looking for it. Right, little girl?" he glanced at her and smiled.

Everything he said was true so she do not have any means to counter.

I cannot do anything but nod.

"The train's about to leave in 20 minutes, you kids should go already." he looked at his watch and waved his hand towards us.

"Ugh... to where?" Ezereath asked, but the man's son was still giving his father killer stares.

Of all wizard families, why stumble to this kind? My luck is kinda low today.

I should have snuck out a few Liquid Luck from mom's study.

"Platform nine and three- quarters" he pointed at their backs.

Looking at the direction he pointed, the two were dumbfounded.

There was only a wall.

As the time has passed and the new generation of witch and wizards arrives at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, there are big changes that happened.

New technologies used with magic for new ways of teaching is implemented, trying to replace and improve the old ways and beliefs. And so the curriculum has drastic changes.

Different wizard schools' exchange students were accepted from time to time, and few exceptional Hogwarts students were also sent to different schools. The Triwizard tournament and the Quidditch games is not only the things students look forward to join. The hostility between houses were already thinning.

There are also things that did not change.

Witch and Wizards enters the school at 11 years old, the same subjects before were taught, and the halls did not change except for the added rooms. 

The houses stayed the same, still with the rivalry and the clear distinction and differences between them.

But there is something that people would not like to happen and that is war.

And that will most likely happen in the near future.

Why?


It is just that enemies of the previous generation came back.

With formidable allies.

And new forces taking over their left, unfinished businesses.

"Alright then, Rose, just like that, we've added each other on our Pads," Mare smiled.
There was one more thing. After the girl had walked her through the uses of the Pad, and how to go about navigating it, Rose asked her question.
"You're an homunculus right? Lux. . .told me you couldn't be ordered?"
Mare laughed, her childish face brightened and she eagerly leaned closer as if she had remembered something hilarious.
"He tried to command me for a freebie! He thought getting the info needed to enter Alos again was that easy!"
Rose raised a brow, "So, it's true? You can't be ordered?"
"Of course!"
"And. . .how is that possible?"
"Oh, that? Simple, 50 Lixels."
". . ."
Rose's curiosity overtook her. She wanted to know if she had found someone just like her, and she paid for that chance at companionship.
"S. Series N. 23, created by Wizard Grey," Mare smiled after the money came through.
"Listening to another human goes against the orders my father gave me. You can try and command me if you don't believe it. It won't work."
It wouldn't work even if she were lying.
As she left the place, Rose thought about that loophole, was it not simply listening to one order over another. Did that make a difference? Either way, she was now down to 700 Lixels within the course of one sitting. Burning money, but she thought it all worthwhile.

A screen projected in front of her. On the left side was the image of a woman smiling smugly to the viewer with arms folded, and a piece of chocolate between her lips. A head of golden hair flapped behind her, and pale-blue eyes like that of the sky gazed with serenity. She had sharp ears, pointed but thin, looked like she was in her early twenties with luscious skin, and Rose was sure she was thus an Elf.
It felt odd taking a peek at her creator. The soft hum of her Core reminded her that this woman was why she was a being breathing in this world.
'The Silent Witch. . .' The texts began next to the image. The name didn't suit her at all.
Their was a slew of information but, essentially, the Silent Witch was amongst the most famous Mages. One part was due to her status of Sage level while being a half-bred of Elf and human. The other part was her expert level control of mana and variety of work—she had traversed all sorts of fields in Magecraft—from Mechanics to Homunculi. Another important part was the fact she was young for her level of expertise and experience.
'Hmm,' Rose dwelled on her own then closed that window and opened another. There was a soft glow of a keyboard at her front, and after some typing. . .
'Silent Witch, location.'
The screen bleeped with a speed unknown to the naked eye and a page came up. There were a couple links, but she simply tapped the one at the top. Oddly enough, it led her right back to the same page as before—oops on her part—and with a swipe of her finger after she realized her blunder, the page scrolled down to a new section.
'Status: Alive, age 32
Current Location: Tross
Crafted Products: 357 Homunculi (41 Noble Series, 125 Private Series, and 191 Soldier Series), 1,300 Magic Armaments, 11,374 Robotics, a personal low-grade Air Ship, 3 contracted medium-grade Air Ships, and 1 City Core.

Rose hardly understood the contents of the profile. She had no idea what half of those products were, but she did find the location of her creator. The city of Tross.
More research revealed that her world had 9 domed cities, each at the site of what was called a 'Great Dungeon'—which she assumed had been what she saw shooting out of Alos. Her world was huge, and there were many more, smaller, settlements besides those 9. However, Tross, her findings brought to her, could only be reached by riding one of those Air Ships from another Great City.
It looked like, no matter what, she would have to find a way into Alos.
'For now,' She thought, 'Safeguarding myself takes priority.'
She continued her search, however, mostly on Alos and the slum surrounding it. The slums, which she now knew had no name besides The Slums of Alos, was actually divided into several segments that formed an almost perfect circle around the city's structure and she just happened to be within that which was under Walker's jurisdiction. Rose studied the maps she found online, they matched very well with the program on her Pad, and that was when she learned that it was possible to turn the 2-d map into a 3-d, heavily simplified, hologram. She looked at it and found that her shack wasn't all that special.
Then, her curiosity piqued and she searched the word 'Mana' — the current source of all her monetary problems. And, that, led into a rabbit hole.
Mana had three forms, she learned. It could store memories, it could be shaped, and it could be used as pure energy. However, those three simple things had been bent to their rightful limit by humanity after the energy was discovered—excelling them right past the Elves that once ruled it.
Memories allowed mana to be given information and instructions, and to send it as well, creating 50% of the technology her world held, like Artificial Intelligence and the Mana Web—an unrestricted space of information anyone could access and build upon at anytime with the right tools—the thing she was currently using. Shaping it allowed one to turn it into what they needed, creating things like the displays on her Pad, the 3-D maps, and so much more. While its energy powered everything from cars to cities and—since any form of energy could be turned deadly—weapons.
Combine all forms with the right materials and essentially anything could be made. That was the basis of their world. Mana. And that was why Mages, who could learn to control all forms of it, were above everyone else.
'Did the Silent Witch give me the ability to control Mana?' She thought as her Core hummed. Mulling. If so, she certainly must be the one that gave her information on Cores and Homunculus's. But why?
There was a lot to uncover about the world but she had a few pressing matters at hand. Closing the interface, a small orb blinked away on the bracelet, she stood up and set out.
Her destination was within the shack itself. There was another room that acted as a bathing place, a container within it was filled with water, there was a bucket floating there, and there was a drainage. She took off her clothing, washed herself with a soap bar located on a platform and dried with a hanging towel. Completing that, she proceeded to wash the rest of her clothing, save for the dark sweater she wore, and left them to dry.
"That's better," The girl smiled at herself, the prickliness of her skin was gone, returned back to its perfect smoothness, and she begun back toward the workshop.
Yet, as the shack around her shook, she was forced to deter.

Rose, a broken doll tossed out into the world with the carelessness befitting her status below humans. However, acquiring a power beyond what she should be able, she fights and Rose Against The Heavens.

The story of a homunculus fighting against fate with a piercing wrath. Raging, an adversary to a cruel world. And taking place in a techno-fantasy.
