Before this class, I had only briefly heard of events in Chinese history through stories passed down in my family. At home, we would never discuss politics. I am not sure if this phenomenon stems from cultural customs or my own political illiteracy. My parents told these stories in the style of avant-garde writers, not for any particular political motive, but for the simple pleasure of storytelling and perhaps to spin a thread of hereditary heroism in the family.
My great-grandfather (maternal grandmother's father) was on the run during the Cultural Revolution. He had to abandon his children and flee to many cities with his wife. After the revolution ended, he collected his children and named them after the various cities to which he fled. To this day, my grandmother suffers from stomach problems because of the sand-filled food she ate at the orphanage. As a 3rd-year student at Tsinghua University, my dad took part in the 1989 student protests in Tiananmen Square. He marched in a 17-hour parade, starved himself for a 7-day hunger strike, and honestly admitted to eating a bowl of noodles on the 3rd day.
In these stories, it was easy for me to pick a side. From my youth, I never understood the sociopolitical context that framed these stories. I considered these scenarios as the people versus the government, and I was loyal to the former. I assumed that the Communist Party was one unified body, and that the Chinese people were both equalized and unified under a common lack of agency, perhaps excepting select individuals accompanying my own family's protagonists. Although I did not bear a typical American hatred for the Communist Party and saw no specific need for China to democratize, I recognized the Party's frequent usurpation of individual rights. Through discussions in class, however, I found that my naïve rendition of events did not aptly address the complexities of China's dichotomous relationships between people and government, tradition and modernism, individualism and collectivism. Despite individual rights being deprioritized in favor of a collective, united China, the Chinese government was not, and still is not, a wholly-united entity. As China modernizes, however, it is crucial for the government to accept change, and the best method for effectuating this change is through self-reform within the Communist Party.
From the beginning, China was not a united country. Qin Shi Huang was the first to unite seven warring states into one great nation. Not only did he bring China under one central government, he dictated common language, units of measurement, and currency. This unification came at a cost to individuals. As portrayed in Zhang Yimou's "Hero," an unnamed assassin presented Emperor Qin with the ultimate ideal for a warrior: the sword disappears altogether, and the desire to kill no longer exists, only peace remains. Emperor Qin's first test under this ultimate ideal was whether or not to kill the nameless assassin. He failed this test, but not out of brazen self-regard. He did not necessarily want to kill the nameless hero, but had to set an example for those who challenged his position as the ruler of a united China. In this film, the phrase "天下" captured the idea that one person's pain is nothing when compared to the suffering of all. Zhang Yimou was criticized for glorifying a tyrant, and Emperor Qin is often compared to Mao. Although they did not deliver upon their visions perfectly - for example, Mao's Great Leap Forward led to massive famines - both Qin and Mao needed centralized power through government to address the Chinese people's basic needs of national security & food. Growing up in a country that preached God-given rights of individuals made me susceptible to mistake this phenomenon as a problem and develop the world-saving attitude of an American imperialist. However, I recognize that this rejection of individualism for collectivism was a necessary condition for China's unity as a nation, and this unity was a precondition to securing basic needs for the Chinese masses.
Political unity is hard to both achieve and maintain in China, even in the face of a foreign aggressor. After the last emperor, Puyi, was deposed, China once again entered a period of unstable politics under feuding warlords. Chiang Kai-shek emerged and led his Nationalist army to defeat warlords in the Northern Expedition and once again restore unity to China. Even in this expedition, however, ideological differences prevented political unity. PBS' China in Revolution documentary described how Chiang's Nationalists and Zhou Enlai's Communists eventually fought each other in Shanghai, leading to a split that preceded a two-party competition for control over the nation. When the Japanese invaded China in 1937, marking the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Nationalist and Communist parties failed to unite. As leaders of their respective parties, Chiang and Mao held different ideas on how to achieve a united China. Chiang believed that China first needed internal pacification by wiping out Communists to resist foreign aggression. Partially in recognition of his own party's fragility, Mao advocated for Communists and Nationalists to put aside their ideological differences and promote a national unity in the face of a foreign aggressor.
Even if it was possible to achieve national collectivism, individuals struggled with collectivism on a local scale. In Mo Yan's Red Sorghum, three commanders of Chinese troops failed to unite to fight Japanese invaders. Commander Yu, Pocky Leng, and Little Foot Jiang waged trifling battles for weapons and for their own pride. As demonstrated by Chinese defectors in Feng Xiaogang's "Back to 1942," an individual thirst for survival and self-preservation led many Chinese to collaborate with Japanese troops rather than with their own people. These individuals exhibited the difficulty for national ideals and policies to be translated down to the local level. In reality, both national and local politics struggled to perpetuate a necessary collectivism in face of Japanese aggressors.
As China moved to a one-party system, ideological differences still remained. Even though the Communist Party has governed China since 1949, the Party is not a wholly-united entity. Despite establishing the Party and serving as the face of Communist China, Mao actually represented a radical faction within the Party. Opposing factions were evident in 1989, when ultra-hardline conservatives (Maoists) and reformists (Deng Xiaoping and Zhao Ziyang) clashed in their dealings with student protestors in Tiananmen Square. After watching Carma Hinton's documentary, "The Gate of Heavenly Peace," I called my dad to speak about the complexities of 1989. Both sides were irrational; irrational students protested against an irrational government. Both sides used violence.
The June 4th movement was not simply a struggle of people versus the government, but it represented an ideological rift in how change should be effected in China. China had long favored cataclysmic change through revolution. Initially, the student movement rejected revolutionary culture and sought to make incremental change a norm through dialogue (对话). Ideological rifts permeated both the ranks of student leaders and government officials. Hardline conservatives challenged reformists in the government, and revolutionary democrats like Chai Ling contested dialogue-promoting reformists like Wang Dan amongst the student leadership. All factions manipulated the masses of protestors to promulgate their own political agendas. Western media paints over these events as the students' "noble quest doomed to fail" and the government's massacre of democracy. However, I recognize that repeated breakdowns in talks between the government and students pointed to a lack of unity on the student front. With no unified desired outcome, there could be no end. These stalemates forced the government to use a controversial but necessary violence to end demonstrations and resume national productivity. Ultimately, my dad believes that prolonged protests hurt the Chinese economy. In some cases, it is necessary to put aside individual rights for national progress.
 Throughout China's history, individualism has often been necessarily sacrificed for unity and collectivism. While political campaigns may push for collectivism on a national level, it is still difficult for individuals to practice this unity. In reality, unity is difficult to achieve on both the national and individual scales. Despite achieving single-party rule, the central Communist government today is still not a seamlessly cohesive entity, and is divided into hardline conservatives and reformists. While radical change has worked for China in the past, the best way to maintain a unified China as the country modernizes and competes on the international stage is to yield its revolutionary history in favor of reformational change.
