A book. A mysterious writer. A girl. Marebel da Silva - or Nina, as she prefers to be called - never imagined herself as a girl of great secrets. All he wants to do is write his horror books, graduate from a good college and take care of Merlin, his cat. And things were going very well until Lucas, who proudly bears the title of his best friend - something that at times seems an exaggeration -, put Rafael Lange in his way. Now, Nina's secrets are hopelessly threatened. The question remains: how bad is it?

"Brayden, I told you to wait outside!" Nate snarled at me, even though he couldn't see me from his position.

"What, again?" I argued with Nate's backside, stuck in a narrow corridor of paper. Flecks from the pages danced in the dim light as if alive. No wonder, since we were boxed in by mountains of books, stacked up to the room's ceiling. When I had first entered the classy mansion, the view had been a surprise, but no shock. 

After many wards and many houses, I had grown used to this sort of neglect, to the dreamscapes of the city's people. Not even the real, physical books were a surprise. Others might have been fooled by the wealth all that paper represented, but I could tell the truth from the smell. Rather than true paper, they were all synthetic, made from the materializer. Even so, all of it still felt like an enormous waste.

"All year you've had me stand in front of this house," I continued my complaint in response to Nate's grunt. "What can be so bad I can't even meet the ward here? How am I supposed to learn if I can't even go inside?" I looked left and right, into the darkness of the paper corridors. This place was a maze. At least I had been brave enough to rush after Nate right away. Without him to guide me, I would never find my way.

Under grunts and pants, Nate made his way through the corridor and into a crossroads, just wide enough for him to turn and stare at me. For a while, we had a silent duel, but my will stayed firm. I wouldn't give in, not again. This time, I would do my job as a proper caretaker. Nate couldn't coddle me forever.

"Fine," my co-worker sighed. "If we argue here we'll only upset Ms. Lector. So you're off the hook for now. You can come along, just... be careful and don't touch anything."

Even though Nate still stared me down, a giddy jolt rushed through my body. At last I could meet the mysterious Ms. Lector whose presence had eluded me for months. With a silly grin splayed all over my face, I bounded over to Nate, focused on the books around me.

"Slow!" a panicked voice hissed at me, so I looked up at Nate. Only now did I realize that his face was pale as a sheet. "What are you doing? I told you to be careful."

"Sure, Nate." My eyes rolled as I squeezed my way past my colleague. Beyond my mountainous companion I found another two long corridors and a set of stairs to lead us up above. "So where to now?"

"It's up the stairs. Be careful though. Don't touch the books."

"Right," I said. Of course I understood Nate's worry. If I moved the books, there was always a chance the entire stack could collapse. We might end up buried alive and the birds couldn't enter the houses to save us. So I took a step into a corridor before I motioned my partner to move ahead. He knew the way, and knew the ward. It wouldn't be the best if Ms. Lector first saw me, someone she had never met before. With nothing but a grunt, Nate squeezed past me and trundled up.

For a while we walked in silence, until something caught my eye. On top of a short book stack sat a novel titled 'Enlightened'. I knew this one. It was one of my grandma's. Oh neat, I thought and decided to pick it up. Since the book sat on top, there was no danger of collapse, was there?

"Stop, dammit!" Nate's shout made the fake paper around us rumble. My foot slipped from the step and my hand stretched to the precarious pile of books to my side. Only inches before my trembling fingers touched the paper walls, my toes caught the lower step, and with it the rest of my body.

Again we stared at each other, Nate's eyes large in horror. After a few seconds, the swaying books around us settled back into place. Not even the home owner showed any reaction, so my heartbeat calmed again.

"What?" I whispered with a frown. "Why'd you scream like that? I almost fell, and the book isn't gonna hurt anyone. It's just lying there. Nothing's gonna fall."

"I know what you're thinking," the gruff voice whispered back, always the mind reader, "but this place is made of more than just books. There's traps everywhere!"

"What?" I hissed back. "What do you mean traps? Like an adventure game?"

"I told you not to touch anything. The owner, Ms. Lector, has placed traps all over her bookshelves in case anyone tries to take them."

"Who would expect traps from just that? What kind of maniac would-" before I could finish my sentence, I caught myself. My hands covered my mouth as I stared at Nate in shock. Insults against the wards were the worst offense I could commit before the dutiful caretaker. However, rather than scold me like he usually did, Nate just frowned.

"Just stay behind me, keep quiet and don't touch anything." And with that, Nate turned and marched ahead again. His silence hurt more than his usual scolding. This time I followed with weary steps, but my boss still glanced behind every three steps. Though the tension between us increased further and further, soon we reached the bedroom of the homeowner. At once, Nate readjusted his attitude as he put on his usual buddy facade.

Meanwhile, I looked around the room itself, careful to not touch anything. Unlike the other rooms, this one was at least barely considered clean. In the corner, I found the expected materializer, which had spewed out all the books for its owner, in exchange for much of her social credit. At least in here, the books only stacked waist high, and there was more room to move around. No wonder, as the room's inhabitant was bound to a wheelchair.

According to the documents, Ms. Lector was a woman in her forties. However, she barely looked human any more. Like many of our wards, she appeared thin like a twig, burned out from her obsessions. Her legs were immobile, but didn't flop down like I had thought. Instead, they were folded up on her chair and scrunched together, intertwined with her arms in an arthritic nightmare. Only her face still seemed mobile, and she used a small monitor to its side to live her entire life. In horror, I watched as Nate began his standard procedure, indifferent to the misery before him.

"And that's your checkup done, Ms. Lector." For how much he talked about the caretaker's code, there were far too many instances where he had forced me to watch as people just died from his neglect. In that regard, I could never understand Nate's so-called 'respect' for the freedom of our wards. To me, this inaction was nothing more than sloth. For many of these people, a real, human connection would achieve much more than robotic nods and standard procedures. Thus, I did what I had rarely done before. I disobeyed.

"Ms. Lector. I saw that you've read Enlightened."

When I stepped forward, I could see Nate move in my periphery, but I was focused on my ward alone. Although the crippled body didn't move, the dim, gray eyes also focused on me in turn.

"A. R. Rovis was my grandmother, you know? It's great to see that there are still people out there who enjoy her writing." I tried to put on my warmest smile. It ignited a tiny, almost invisible flame within those dull eyes.

"Who are you?" a raspy voice echoed from her dry throat.

"My name is Brayden Rovis, Ma'am. Unfortunately, I have none of my grandmother's talents, but I always loved her books."

"A. R. Rovis was a good writer. Her themes always had a weight most others lack today."

Encouraged by the ward's reception, I took another step forward.

"You know, if you like her books, I can bring you some," I urged. "I actually have the real ones at home."

True shock entered Ms. Lector's apathetic eyes. "Really?" she asked in a whisper.

"Yeah, it's real paper, too. They're in my room, to make sure nothing happens to them. We also have some handwritten manuscripts, but those are in lockup."

"I would love to see them only once, more than anything."

"You can. It's easy," I grinned.

Wasn't this a great first step? A real human connection? Maybe like this, I could convince Ms. Lector to leave her house and get her arthritic body cured. However, our ward responded with a hollow laugh.

"Not with my body. I can hardly see, I can no longer walk. In my state, how could I ever make it through the city and appreciate those rare pieces?"

Sadness filled her voice, but to me it sounded sweeter than any laughter. This was real emotion, real desire beyond the prison Ms. Lector had built for herself. Just one more push and I could save her!

"That's not a problem, is it? Just call on a clinic and request a pick-up. I can stay around until the-"

"No!" While I froze in confusion at the outburst, a dry cough overcame my ward. Things had been going so well. What happened?

"No doctors. I've read. I know. No tests. No probes. They'll only take out my eyes! How will I read without eyes?"

Confused, the woman begged to be spared. Still, I couldn't give up now.

"They won't. Ma'am, if you want to read my grandmother's-"

"Excuse us." With a rude tone and a rough hand, Nate barged into the conversation and shoved me out the door. "Ms. Lector, I am very sorry about Brayden. He is still in training. Please have a pleasant day."

When Nate followed me outside, I wanted to argue, but his stern eyes shut me up. This time, he wouldn't even let me walk ahead, and instead decided to take the front again. Every time he looked back, my mood soured.

How could he know that I couldn't have convinced Ms. Lector in the end? If he wasn't so paranoid all the time, if he was willing to push just a bit harder, how many of these poor souls could have been saved? Although he always said not to disturb the peace of the wards, where was the peace for a miserable existence like Ms. Lector's?

At the foot of the stairs, Nate turned again to look at me like a disappointed parent, as if I would run back at any moment. And then it happened. With large eyes I saw how Nate's foot slipped on the lowest step. Before he realized what had happened, he had already stumbled halfway across the room.

"Careful!" My shout was as pointless as it was late, and Nate's hands found balance on the stack of books by the entrance. Like a child in front of his first school, Nate stared up at the towering books. Whether or not he had activated a trap, the entire stack began to sway back and forth. With a sluggish inevitability, the stack leaned farther and farther, dragged to the side by its own weight, soon to bury Nate beneath mountains of synthetic paper.

A terror ran through my entire body as everything around me slowed to a crawl. While my mind was frozen solid, my body reacted all on its own. My feet shot off the steps and launched me halfway down the stairs, faster than I had ever moved before. A single leap and I was across the room, leaned against the crooked stack, while Nate still stood there paralyzed. As soon as my hands touched the paper, I could feel my weakness. I wasn't strong enough! Several tons of synthetic paper had been stacked together. How could I ever hold them by myself?

Though my muscles quivered, the paper buckled more and more. As my heart escaped into my stomach, I looked to Nate for rescue. My former caretaker just stood there with big eyes, no use to anyone. My view returned to the book shelves right before me. Since I couldn't rely on anyone else, I would rely on myself.

And then, a miracle happened to save us both: Somehow, from somewhere, my body pulled a strength far beyond me. A strange power shot into my veins to fill me with strength. Above, the stack shifted and buckled, before I forced the unwilling paper back into its original position.

Drenched in sweat I turned to Nate, who stumbled out of the house, and back into the sunlight. For a second I took in the claustrophobic maze of knowledge, and the few loose books on the ground who still waited on all their brothers to follow. Soon however, I returned to my senses and followed Nate out into the city.

"That was close," I said as I wiped the cold sweat off my forehead.

"What were you doing in there!?" Nate screamed at me out of nowhere.

"What do you mean what was I doing? I saved your damn life, man!"

"No, not that! When you talked to the Ms. Lector! I would have never tripped if I didn't have to keep an eye out for you all the time!"

Even though his excuse was more than just a bit unfair, I would much rather focus on the actual core of our conflict. It was important to be open about our misgivings, otherwise nothing would ever be resolved. Nate taught me that.

"I've been a caretaker for almost a year now and all I've done is watch you work. How am I ever gonna get any better if you never let me do anything?"

"That's not how this works, Brayden! You can't just invade people's personal space like that! Ms. Lector has a hard time as is! You need to be delicate or you'll make things worse!"

"How much worse can Ms. Lector possibly get!? If we don't push her a bit, she will just rot away!"

At first it looked like Nate would just push back stronger, but instead he held his breath. Once he released it with a sigh, it appeared like he had cooled off and aged a decade in the process. Suddenly, I felt bad about my outburst. I had known Nate for years, and I knew what kind of man he was. He always just wanted the best for me, and I repaid him with nothing but entitlement.

"Brayden," he said at last. "I know I've not been forthright with you, but please try to understand me. I'm worried. Not only about the wards, but also about you. I'm sure you'll be a great caretaker, but you don't want to get involved too deeply. So far, you haven't seen what sort of stuff goes on in the City Council. Believe me, you don't want to do to well and get promoted. Recently, the boss has asked some questions about your performance. I'd rather you just stay an anonymous cog than-"

Before he could finish, Nate's phone interrupted his explanation. As the caretaker read the new message, his eyes widened.

"Ah, shoot. Looks like there's an emergency at Carlos' place."

"Mr. Oraya? What happened?" I was worried, maybe more than I should have been. After all, even though Nate always stressed how the wards came first, he also talked about the importance of distance. Still, over our past visits, the haggard painter with the peculiar temper had grown on me.

"The old idiot's been drinking paint for no goddamn reason," the caretaker frowned, in spite of his own advice.

"What? Why would he do that?"

"How would I know? Anyways, as his official wardens, we have to show up there, give a statement for the clinic. Let's just hope he's fine. I hate this part of the job," he mumbled more to himself.

"But... what about the rest of our route? It's almost evening and we still have one more place to visit. There is no way we can get this done on time."

If there was one thing I had learned in my first year, it was to avoid tardiness. Whenever we failed to finish our schedule, we would be deducted part of our monthly allowance, with no warnings. Nate looked conflicted as well, torn between his responsibility towards his ward and the one towards me. This time, I had to make the choice for him.

"It's fine, Nate. Go look after Mr. Oraya, I got the last one for the day."

For a long while, he stared into my smile, before a curt "you sure?" showed the full extent of his distrust. Still, this was the best solution for us. Maybe like this, Nate would relent and finally let me do a job by myself.

"Yeah, you should really go to Mr. Oraya. It sounds serious, and I want him to be fine too. After all, he was my first ward."

With another deep sigh, Nate thought again, before his phone rang a second time. Without a single look, we both knew what the message was about.

"...alright, guess here's your chance to prove yourself. At least the last ward seems like a mild case. It's only a registration, so you should just have them fill out the basic form and leave right away. I'm serious, stay on protocol and don't try too hard to fix everything. Our work takes time, even more so with new wards."

"I'll just do my job, nothing more." Even though I didn't mean it, at this point I would say anything to get some hands-on experience. "Call me when you know more about Mr. Oraya."

"Will do. You can take the cab over and then sign it off when you're done."

"Wait, the cab? What about you?"

"It's only three streets away from here. I'll walk over and take the bus home."

For the third time, Nate's phone rang. Although the sound was the same, it felt much more urgent than before.

"Anyways, gotta run. Good luck, buddy. Do your best." After Nate had thrown his last well-wishes over his shoulder, he ran down the empty street. Had I known what would happen next, I would have said something. Our past selves are always so carefree.

Unaware of future regrets, I found the silvery gleam of the cab ready and waiting for me.

"Finally!" I called out in relief. Of course, I was grateful for Nate's help. Throughout the year, he had done his best to shield me from danger and answered all of my beginner questions. Still, I wasn't allowed to do anything under his watch. Rather than his trainee, Nate had treated me like one of his wards. This was my chance to prove myself. With swagger, I grabbed my permit and slid it across the cab door.

A few seconds of nothing and I began to get nervous. I had never even opened the cab, so I thought that swiping the permit in its vague direction would be enough.

*Don't panic.*

An examination revealed a found a slight, rectangular indentation towards the door's top. This time, I made sure to abandon the confident flourish from before and stared swiped with a slow motion. The light beep from the door made me recoil in terror. Before anyone could witness my embarrassment, I hid inside the vehicle.

As my heart calmed from the excitement, I looked at my phone, at the documents for my first solo ward.

*Sophie Rayne. 19 Years old. Recommendation as teacher. Scheduled to continue studies. Depression. Address...*

"Please bring me to Sunlight Boulevard. Erm... Acacia Alley. House number is 47."

"Sunlight Boulevard. Acacia Alley 47. Now driving."

"...thank you," I whispered to the machine.

Morning came sooner then later, I went about my routine after offering proper prayers to God, I'm no fan of churches but I believe God exists and he's the supreme being, I thankfully woke up early so I was able to eat a proper home cooked meal.

 The rest of the day went really well too, I had no problems as Mark, Tess and Matt was all absent, it was unsettling however but even the populars barely noticed and there wasn't really anything I could do so I held my peace.

 Three exact days after my banter with Mark, they –Mark, Tess and Matt still were all not present, I didn't know why but I couldn't shake the unpleasant feeling that something was wrong somewhere, so even if it was a herculean task, I asked the populars for their whereabouts, I mean Mark's and Tess', then I found out it was Mark's birthday week so the lovers were on a week's vacation to the popular city of love – Paris. Even at that, I still wasn't satisfied and that didn't actually explain the mysterious disappearance of Matt, as far as I could remember the Bookworm had a perfect attendance.

 Tuesday was when my worry was confirmed to be valid, all three of them were declared missing by the school management, Mark and Tess' parents only noticed they were gone yesterday and it turns out Matt is an orphan and the orphanage was obviously careless about his whereabouts until a family showed interest in his adoption, no one had a clue of where they could be, not even the populars. 

 The school's CCTV footage for the entire week was mysteriously wiped clean and the security guard on duty all week said they hadn't left the school compound, everyone was dumbstruck, even the teachers couldn't take a guess of what might have happened and the unusual part was that it disturbed me even more than I was willing to admit, why it was so was what I couldn't fathom.

Sure enough, the next day Eastwood high was more of a desert than a school, very few teachers and almost a nonexistent population of students were present, I could tell it was because of fear, no one knew what gobbled up two popular students and the Bookworm, they had probably all come to a conclusion that their disappearance had something to do with coming to Eastwood so they all stayed in the security of their respective homes.

 Cops were everywhere around and in the school building, they were trying their possible best to piece the puzzle together but there were very many unfounded pieces, pieces I might be able to help with, for example, only I knew Matt went to the library during lunch hour, only I knew Tess was also in the library at that time,it was only me that could tell that Mark probably went in after I told him off several days ago, I wanted to tell the cops that I might have figured out the link behind their disappearance, that maybe something or someone in the library was connected to their disappearance, but I wanted to get my facts proven first so I decided to go to the library – alone.

 The library's quietness was creepy, everything was just as it used to be, neat rows and rows of books stacked properly in the wooden shelves, reading desks were just as orderly as it used to, even the librarian's nude nail polish that had been there since I could remember hadn't moved an inch, I wandered all through the large empty space but not a thing was out of place except from the new stack of books at the rear end of the room.

 Those books however were kind of disorganized and out of place, I carefully looked around it for anything that could be a clue, 

Nothing.

I sighed in resignation and made to leave the room when I noticed a bright book cover strangely hanging out of the remaining books on the top shelve by my right, out of curiosity, I picked the book and checked the cover for the title,

The mystery.

It had the picture of a glowing golden mansion drawn very beautifully over the cover, however the author's name wasn't indicated. I turned the book over instinctively to check what the story is about and surprisingly, very few words were written as the synopsis.

It was strange, no author, no publisher, nothing. I opened the first page of the book, THE MYSTERY was boldly written on it, the next page had the table of contents, it only had fifteen chapters outlined on it;

My heart skipped a beat when I read my own name on the fifth chapter, maybe it was just a coincidence? I went on to read the rest of the chapter content, the book can't actually be based on lives of random people right?

8. Obtain the treasure box.

9. Change the course of history.

10. Tame the lions.

Of all novels I've ever read, both electronic and paperback, this novel is sure the most unusual. I mean, who publishes a book without her name being indicated, no dedication, ten worded synopsis, unusual and unrelated chapter names? It was really strange but I couldn't put the book down, so I ignored all the warning alarms blaring in my head, went over to a study desk and opened the next page of the mysterious book –The mystery.

 

All is not what it seems," I whispered with my fingers crossed and everything changed, literally everything....

Have you ever wondered if there is a world of imaginations and imaginary friends and characters?, well here's a spoiler; there is and it's up to Joanna Coopers to get sucked into it so she can rescue her friends/enemies and by rescue, it means living through and maybe changing details of a number of novels to unravel a very unusual mystery.

"So, have you decided on what do you want to learn as a craft? Choose ONE!" Edward impatiently asked the boy. Riwall had been insisting on learning literally every craft mentioned by Eleanor years ago.


Edward admired how the boy was a sponge for knowledge, but he knew everyone had a limit. The fact his schedule was already full was an even greater issue, even fitting one craft class in it was already a challenge.


"Please Master! I told you I don't need to sleep that much, and I don't want to specialize in ranged combat or blunt weapons! We can reduce my training in these areas to accommodate more crafting lessons!"


"How can you prefer craft lessons instead of combat?! You are wasting your potential by limiting yourself to crafting!" Edward knew it was a weak argument, but he ran out of them hours ago and was almost out of patience as well.


"But I want to try it! Let's make a deal. Once a month, you will test me in blunt weapon combat and archery. If you think I don't perform well enough for your liking; I will drop the crafting classes until I improve again."


"Ok! Ok! You won! By the gods, sometimes you are as stubborn as Father!"


{YES!}


"Ok, for now, choose three crafts."


"But I..."


"Shut it! Don't push your luck, or it will be ZERO!" He snapped.

 
After going over his options with Friday, he narrowed the list down to three.


"Smithing, Enchanting and Woodworking"

 
"Care to tell the logic behind these choices?" Edward got very curious; the boy did not even waste a second before choosing these three.
 

"Smithing will let me create my own weapons when I have access to a forge and some time. But its the secondary benefits that really convinced me, being able to see the weak spots of enemy armor and weapon can change the fight while being able to perform the party weapon's maintenance on the field will save us a lot of time and money."
 

"Hmm, the secondary benefits are really interesting, with your precision I can see you exploiting all weak spots of your enemies. But keep in mind that this won't apply to high-quality gear or monsters. And the rest?"

 
"I briefly talked to Hector about enchantments. My high level <Drawing> and <Scribing> skills, combined with my affinity for working with numbers will give me an edge over most enchanters. I may be able to progress enough to disarm magical traps with ease or even change my equipment's enchantments before a fight."
 

"That is an excellent reason. I once traveled with a mage who was also a great enchanter. She gave our party an edge in all of the fights that we could afford some minutes to prepare beforehand. And Woodworking?"
 

"Greg is a monster at using a bow, he is fast and accurate, but wastes a ton of arrows in his fights. By learning woodworking, I should be able to supply him with arrows and even bows in case he loses or breaks his one. But woodworking brings other benefits as well, like making improvised traps or detecting rudimentary structures weak points. The Azure Forest has thousands of tribes of humanoid monsters with wood structures."
 

"Your reason for taking woodworking is not wrong, but it's not as logical as the other two. Don't hesitate to contact me if you want to change to another one. Greg is already going to learn it, so he will be able to craft his ammunition. I will get everything ready, and the three of you will start your crafting lessons in a month."
 

"Thank you, Master! I won't disappoint you!"
 

{Now I just need to ask Hector for books about the other crafting areas to prepare for them. Once I master these three, I will have a headstart when starting the others.}

 
[It is a pity Hector refused to lend you books on enchanting, he probably felt it was a subject you could easily try on your own. I think it's cute how he thinks you would blow yourself up by trying to enchant something without a master.]

[Ho! Glorified calculator, huh? I will put you through a horror simulation that you will never dare call me a calculator again!] She pretended to be angry, but he could feel she found his jab at her funny.

"So you are the kid Ms. Eleanor has been talking about for the last two years? By what she says about you, I pictured someone at least twice your size ha ha ha! By the gods, you are so small! ha ha ha!"
 

A two-meter-tall elven wearing a black leather apron laughed loudly and took a minute to compose himself. If he dressed in fine clothes and straightened up his posture, one would mistake him for the stereotypical proud elf. Riwall tried to keep his composure as Eleanor taught him, but a huge vein was bulging in his temple.
 

"Well, mini-human, my name is Theodas Farsteel. The Head himself adopted me when I was a kid, which makes me brother to that wannabe hunter called Edward and the crazy Commander Eleanor. I will be your smithing master for as long as you insist on wasting your time on it." He waved his hand dismissively while speaking, which bothered Riwall a little.
 

{Huh? Wasting time?}
 

"Nice to meet you, Master Farsteel, mind if I call you Master Theodas? It's hard to keep track of so many Farsteels with the same title haha!"
 

"No problem, shorty!" Riwall flinched at the new nickname he received.
 

"I think I misheard you before, Master. You said that I am insisting on wasting my time on smithing?"
 

"You are just like all other fighter students I get ordered to teach. They all think they will pick up a crafting skill easily to complement their combat skills. But crafting is not a part-time job; it's just like combat! If you treat it as a hobby, it will be useless! I say the same thing to everyone, they make a beautiful speech of how it will be different with them, but all end up abandoning smithing in two months." There was a hint of sadness in his voice.

 
"I won't make an inspiring speech or a ludicrous promise. I will listen to you and let my dedication to smithing speak in my stead."

 
"Ha! This one is among the five best I ever heard! Maybe you will be different Stumpy! Now tell me, what do you know about smithing?" 

 
Riwall immersed himself in a lengthy and precise description of smithing in general, all thanks to Friday's enormous database on all subjects ever studied by humans on Earth. After about 10 minutes, Theodas interrupted him.

 
"Enough! Enough! Ok, I may have underestimated you a bit, you genuinely seem passionate about the craft. Many techniques you described are unknown to me; we will get to them in the future. But why did you not mention the pathways? They are the base of smithing after all! You just described how to make a beautiful well-crafted monster's toothpick!"

 
"Huh?" Riwall made a confused expression.

 
"Wait, you know all that but don't know about mana's role in crafting? I have a report stating that your <Drawing> is at least Level 20 and <Scribing> at 15 right? Did you get them that high without ever, EVER, using mana during your creations?"

 
{What is he on about?} He was not aware of how his masters were trying to gauge his skill levels based on what he did.
 

"Yeah, I never spent a gram of mana while drawing or writing anything, was I supposed to?"
 

Theodas facepalmed himself. This kid was too obnoxious about skills.
 

"I guess no one ever told you the three crafting steps, right?"
 

"Crafting steps? Never heard about it, is it something like the casting spells steps?"
 

"Precisely! You see, crafting is like casting a spell. First, you need intention, what do you want a dagger to do? To be sharp, that's a given, but what else? Maybe have its sharpness increased when attacking monsters? Or maybe to vibrate as it cuts the target? The choices are endless."
 

Riwall widened his eyes, and a smile began forming as he imagined all possibilities. Theodas noticed his expression and started getting excited himself.
 

"The second step is the forging itself, the better your technique, the better the end product. But just like in the second step of spell casting, your forging needs to be compatible with your intention. If you intend it to be sharp but craft it without an edge, you will have ruined the end product."

 
"The third step is the most important; in a spell, you would feed it mana, but you can't just pour mana into the metal and hope for the best! It needs to circulate freely. Otherwise, the weapon will dry its user clean of his mana to activate the special effect. Think of the user as the mana core and the dagger as an extension of his arm. You want the mana to flow into it efficiently and activate the effect you desired for during the first step!"
 

"If you forge a weapon without the first and third step, you will have a piece of metal that will only damage weak creatures. To stand against mighter foes on equal grounds, you need to have a magic weapon and a magic armor!"

 
Theodas was pumped to start the classes right away. He noticed how engrossed and inspired Riwall got as he progressed in his explanation.

 
"Tell me, doorstop, how is your finesse with fire, earth, and water magic?"
 

"I got better at it in the last two years. But Hector said he was ill-suited to help me get better at it. It seems like I'm more proficient in casting wide-area spells."
 

"Don't worry, only healers and crafters are suited to teach people how to be more precise with their mana. Hold on a second; I have something that will help you to increase your finesse."
 

He fumbled through some trunks before finding a gray plate and handling it to Riwall.
 

It was an object similar to a ball-in-a-maze puzzle, but there was no ball in it, and the maze's corridors got progressively tighter the closer to the center.
 

"What is this thing?"

 
"This, grass-scarecrow, is a mana-maze. It's an enchanted training tool for healers and crafters. Most combat-mages don't even know what this tool is. The corridors are mana pathways, but they get tighter the closer you get to the center. Your job is to guide your mana to the center as fast as possible. If it touches the walls, an enchantment will activate and disperse all the mana you put into it."

 
{Such ingenuity! If I had one of these in the last two years, I would have already mastered precision casting!}
 

"Thank you, Master! I will conquer this maze in no time!"

 
He began channeling his mana into the apparatus before being interrupted.
 

"Hold your drakes!"

[You sure can get sidetracked easily.] She couldn't decide between laughing or feeling disappointed at Riwall.
 

"When you are here, we will focus on your forging and intent. You will have to master the maze in your spare-time. I will also lend you some books I have about mana pathways to supplement your knowledge and one about different types of ores, their mana affinities, and characteristics."

I will state here my promises to you, potential reader:

1. No harem! I don't trust myself to make a harem feel natural or healthy, I never met any person who has a personality that can adapt and live in a harem for reasons that are not monetary, so I can't draw inspiration from real life. Sorry!;

2. The enemies will not be bland and illogically mean. Some may feel like that at first, but I will take great care in fleshing them out, trust me. You may end up hating some, but you won't be able to deny that they had their reasons for what they did;

3. I am using a paid (and expensive) automated editor tool, and I take longer to write because I take my time in editing the stuff I write. I am aiming to improve and I will not shy away from constructive criticism, nor take offense for no reason;

4. Characters will die and will suffer, some will get over the tragedies and improve, others will not be as resilient.

5. This novel has a lot of ground to cover, it is neither a short story, a manual on crafting, or the script of some action scene. There will be both time skips and oversimplifications of some actions for the sake of moving the story forward. Time skips will be more prominent in the first 30 chapters. I will describe crafting processes and fights with more detail if they are essential for the chapter;

6. If I took my time describing something, it's because it is important. I hate novels that wastes time describing useless stuff. If you skim over something, the chances are that something in the future will not make sense. I am an adept of "Chekhov's gun" principle;

7. If in the future Webnovel comes to offer me a contract, I will first reach for the readers to know their opinion and see if they want to donate through other sites or not. It would be a dream come true to live of writing, but not if the cost is the alienation from the people that supported me along the way;

8. I already have 31k words on my auxiliary documents, I have a plan for the story, and I will not be making changes even if someone ends up noticing some foreshadowing and figures out what will happen. The story comes first.

9. I have a wife, a job that demands 9h every day and courses related to my job (lawyer) three days of the week, it's unlikely that I will be able to do mass releases at all. I will have a healthy amount of chapters to be able to post at least 1 chapter every day continually. Don't worry.

10. I will read all the comments. I will listen to all you have to say and will try my best to accommodate demands as long as they do not hamper the path I prepared.

11. There is an arc that spans the entire novel. Each volume will be an arc in itself while progressing a little bit of the main arc. Every arc will have one or more main antagonists.

Saavi arrived at her door only to realize that Mikaela wasn't there, changing directions she went towards Mika's room.
Standing in the doorway, Saavi watched as Mika moved about her room clean and put away items from her luggage.
"Mika…" She ran in giving her friend a big hug.
"Aww...Saavi, I missed you too." They stood hugging for while before Saavi remembered Ailwin.
"Is Prince Ailwin here...he's not with you?"
"No, we split up. He has some stuff to take care of before the solstice banquet."
"En." Saavi looked around at the luggage she bought back, and notice some of it looks like it's came from home.
"Did you go back to the Amara clan?"
"En...A lot of things happened that I need to fill you in on."
"Okay, I'm listening." Saavi bent down to grab clothes from Mika's bag to help put it away.
"Hold on one minute." Closing the door and placing a concealment charm around the room, Mika wanted to make sure no one would over hear their conversation. From Saavi's words, she too had notice the royal guards posted in areas around the school.
"Okay, let me start from the beginning where we arrived at Rowood City…" Retelling the events since they separated took a long time. 
When she got to the point where they found out the King was doing experiments on the citizens, Saavi couldn't believe it. It wasn't until Mika showed her the books she had taken from the basement of the Bizana clan household that Saavi nearly threw up in shock and disgust.
"This...this...how…"
"Saavi, it's best not to look through the books any further, they will only upset you more." Mika took the books from Saavi's cold hands. The horror in these books made Saavi's skin look pale and clammy.
"Should I continue…?"
Mika was afraid the Saavi wouldn't be able to handle the rest of the story.
"No...no, I'm listening. Please, continue."
"Okay…"
She proceeded to tell Saavi about their escape then the battle they had with the royal guards and how she now has two warships.
"Mikaela, you can't keep the two warships."
"What! Why not?"
"What are you going to do with two warships, you don't even have an army."
"Oh, I have an army...and it's the greatest army around." People need to stop looking down on my nanos. They can do anything the Shadow Wolves can do and then some, Mikaela forgot to realize she hasn't really told anyone about her creations.
"Mikaela…"
"Ah don't fret, I'm letting the Shadow Wolves borrow one." She smiled, making Saavi shake her head.
"Anyways, back to my story…" Continuing on, she explained what happened when Ailwin met with the Amara clan, which turned Saavi from a icicle into a raging volcano.
"How can the they do such a revolting thing!?" Standing up, Saavi began pacing around the room, yelling out degrading slurs toward Sienna and her mother.
"Saavi...calm down, I handled it already." Mika laughed seeing her friend's huffed up cheeks and redden face.
"Still Mika, your sisters….your sisters are all-"
"Sluts. Yes, I know." Saavi finally started to calm down after seeing Mika's composed face.
"...Mika?"
"Hmm?"
"Aren't you worried that Sienna and Ailwin might have...you know...and she might be pregnant with his…"
"No."
"Your not...?"
"No, because like I told you. I handled it already." There was no way she was going to allow Sienna to leave her ship without checking her body for any later troubles.
When she sent her nanos to give Sienna her punishment, they also checked to see if she was pregnant.
Long story short, Ailwin must have kept some inkling of sanity about him, for he stick didn't get anywhere near her hole.
Which was another reason she felt the need to smack upside the head. All her worries and stress was nothing.
Saavi didn't believe her, but she decided to let it go, "So, Sienna is a canoness now."
"No."
"No?" Saavi was puzzled, didn't she just tell me her sister said she was going to become a canoness?
"You really think my sister would go through with become a canoness for the rest of her life?" Remembering, Sienna's personality, Saavi slapped her forehead. How could I be so stupid?
"Hmph...Sienna found a way to get a celestial temple admission letter."
"Celestial temple? Aren't they the females who have the enormous power in court…their head even has the same authority as the King!" 
Although Saavi is older, her lack of a background has stopped her from receiving some of the most basic education provided female her age. To make up for that shortcoming, she studied every night, so she doesn't fall behind the other students.
"En, the celestial temple...thought to be a place of worship and power, however, it's anything but." Mika dazed off as she recalled the information she read when she was hacking into the Rowood City's mainframes.
"What does that mean?" Saavi was confused as Mika didn't elaborate.
"Just know that if you ever receive an admission letter from them, to throw it away. Don't even think of going there… Even Sienna would have been better off becoming a canoness." Mika noticed the despondent look on Saavi's face at her warning. She wanted to say more, unfortunately, she hadn't finish looking through all the data she got from Rowood yet, and some of it was incomplete. However, she felt Saavi would be better off leaving that place alone. 
Anything that has ties to that city and the King just spells evil.
Saavi was disappointed, she had been thinking get about joining to the Celestial Temple. 
It's a place where females could shine, but hearing Mikaela's words she was starting wondered if she missed something important.
"Okay, I won't go there." After seeing the books and everything Mikaela told her about, she felt it wouldn't be worth it to ignore the danger.
Plus, if Sienna is accepted there then that place is not as virtuous as I thought. Saavi thought as she continued to help Mika to put away her clothes.
"Argh, I'm going to need to find a dress for the banquet in two days." Mika realized as she looked at her clothes in her closet, "Want to go shopping with me?" She asked, but received no reply.
"Saavi?" She came to see her friend staring down into her trunk.
"Mika, what are these doing in your luggage?" Saavi pulled out two bottles of fine wine that Mika smuggled out of the Bizana clan's household.
"….oh, you found your gift! I got us matching wine bottles." Mika grabbed one from Saavi's hands, "Bestie forever!"

Classes soon started and Art was taking Healing from Pomfrey, Dueling from Flitwick and Wards from Dumbledore. He also ordered Alchemy books from Flourish and Blotts but had to wait for them to be delivered. Fred and George were busy trying to figure out how the Champion selection was decided but came up empty. 

"Nothing! No one is saying anything." Fred said sitting down at the Gryffindor table in a huff. Fred joined him but didn't say anything. 

Art wasn't bothered about how the selection would happen because it was clear that Dumbledore would tell the school when the other two schools showed up. 

They slowly ate until Fred friend looked down at his schedule. "We have class with Moody! Let's leave early to get a good seat!" 

Fred stood up and took off without George and Art. They stood up and followed him, weaving through students. It seemed that Fred wasn't the only one who wanted to get a good seat in Moody's class as most of the front row was full. The four of them took the remaining seats and waited patiently for class to begin. 

Looking around, Art saw many Dark Detectors and other devices on Moody's desk. 

'Looks like the rumors are true, he trusts no one, not even students.' 

Soon the classroom filled up and Moody came limping in, his wooden leg lurching awkwardly when he walked. 

"Books away." he said roughly. "Now Professor Lupin has caught me up with you covered last year. He covered curses but he didn't go deep enough." 

His face blue eye whizzed around the class looking at everyone. 

"There are three curses that will book you a life sentence in Azkaban, anybody know what they are?" 

George's hand shot up into the air. "Imperius Curse, sir." 

Moody walked to George's desk and looked down at him, making Fred nervous. 

"Weasley, eh? Your father is a good man, helped me out a few days back." he grunted before returning to his desk. "Yes! The Imperius Curse!" he yelled. 

He took out a large spider from the jar and muttered, "Imperio!" 

Soon the spider started to do backflips and other strange things causing the class to laugh besides Art. 

"Think it's funny, do ya? How about if I do it to you?" he growled. 

The laughter died down and looked at the spider solemnly. 

"Complete control. I could make it kill itself or kill others. Years ago, countless wizards and witches were under the control of the Imperius Curse. The ministry had a tough job figuring out the truth between those who were under the curse… and those who weren't." he said seriously, placing the spider back in the jar. 

"Another one?" he looked at the class. 

A few hands shot up, including Cedrics. 

"You are?" he said, pointing at Cedric. 

"Cedric Diggory, sir. The Cruciatus Curse." he said with a slightly frightened look. 

"Yes… the Cruciatus Curse. Needs to be a little bigger for you to get the picture." Moody said gruffly, casting a growing charm on another spider. 

"Crucio!" he said. 

Soon the spider started to shake and its legs spent at weird angles, clearly in pain. Art's face went dark and waved his wand suddenly, cutting the spider in half. 

"We get it, sir." he said, putting his wand away. 

Moody looked at Art and limped over to his desk, "Cason, what is the last Curse?" he asked, he electric blue eye fixed on Art. 

"The Killing Curse." he said, not looking at Moody. 

Moody nodded and pointed his wand at the spider before yelling, "Avada Kedavra!" 

A green beam of light shot out of his wand and hit the spider. The spider simply rolled over and died. Art's face went cold and subconsciously clenched his fists, seeing the green light. 

"Not nice or pleasant… no counter curse or way to block it. Only one person has ever survived and he is in this school." Moody said in a strange voice. 

"Now these three curses are called the Unforgivable Curses. Control, pain and death. You must be prepared, you must have CONSTANT VIGILANCE!" he shouted, causing the students to jump.  

He started to write notes on the board and everyone copied them. The class continued like this with Moody talking about the implications of each curse. 

Class ended with everyone muttering about the class. 

"He might actually be crazy, you know? Too many curses to the brain." Fred said. 

"He has seen it all. It is not a surprise that he doesn't trust anyone." Cedric said. 

Art nodded in agreement, "Seeing friends and family betray or even kill each other, that could damage someone's trust."

"Well still, one of the best lessons we have ever had." George said, excitement on his face. 

All of them agreed on this and Moody's lesson soon spread through the school. Some were filled with horror as others were jumping down with excitement. 

The next Defence Against the Dark Arts class, Moody performed the Imperius Curse on them individually. The class was a fun one as many students were controlled to do strange things. Art easily shook off the curse, earning great praise from Moody. 

"You see that! You see that! Never even had a chance to control him! Strong will power and CONSTANT VIGILANCE! Good job Cason!" 

Cedric and the twins left the class with darks looks on their faces. 

"Teach us." Cedric suddenly said. "I never want to feel that helpless again." 

The twins nodded in agreement, their faces serious for once. 

"Okay." he simply said. 

He took out a book from his bag and made three copies of it with his wand. 

"Read this book and clear your minds before you go to sleep each night. I will start penetrating your minds in a week." Art said, glad to his friends being serious about this. 

He didn't believe that they would become skilled in Occlumency but proficient enough to protect their thoughts. He knew the twins were emotional so they would have a tougher time to achieve it. 

Over the next few weeks, Art noticed that the castle had overnight became spotless. Even empty corridors and empty classrooms were spotless. 

Art smiled internally, 'Looks like the teachers want to make a good expression.' 

He was no different, today was the day that the representatives of Durmstrang and Beauxbatons arrived and he was wearing his best robes. He also combed his hair which he usually didn't do. 

McGonagall was going around scolding students whose robes were ruffled or anything out of line. Art could barely contain his excitement as the school was waiting for the delegates to arrive. 

"Someone is in a good mood." Cedric smirked. 

"I haven't seen her in a year." Art defended. 

"Maybe she forgot all about you and is dating someone else." Fred teased. 

George patted Art's shoulder, "Don't worry, we will make the man mysteriously disappear." 

Art gave him a light punch to the shoulder and scanned the sky, looking for Beauxbaton. 

Suddenly Dumbledore from the back row with the other teachers, yelled, "Ah, unless I am very much mistaken, the delegation from Beauxbatons approaches!" 

A shiver ran down Art's body and scanned the skyline, finally seeing a small dot in the sky. Students were yelling and trying to guess what it was. Soon a dozen winged horses were seen pulling a giant carriage. The horses themselves were the size of elephants and Art was immediately drawn to them. 

'Abraxan.' he sighed, mesmerized by the horses. 

Soon the carriage landed and a boy in pale blue robes came out and unfolded a set of golden steps. Soon a giant women walked out in a black satin dress. She had an olive skinned face with a handsome face with large opals around her neck. 

'This must be Madame Maxime.' thought Art, remembering what Fleur told him about her. 

The school started to clap for her as she walked towards Dumbledore with a smile on her face.  She was about to say something when a scream rang through the yard. 

"ART!"

Artland Cason lost everything at a young age to the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters. Though it is years later his anger and hatred burn just as hot.

What await them down there is a room with a circular rusty door, it seems to have experience the passage of time. There are carvings on the door, treasures, nature, beasts and devils, and a little star. The room itself is not that big, but seems expansive for the three of them.

"Where is this ?" Licht ask Leon, after all the only one who knows about this place is Leon.

"This is a Hidden Tower" Leon say, Licht want to ask what is Hidden Tower, but Kazuki already answer that question for him.

"Hidden Tower, it's a extremely tower manifestation, because instead of appearing above the ground it appear under the ground and become undetected, rendering even Scanner Type Awakened useless, this Hidden Tower usually give out the best reward someone can imagine, including power, not item, but power" Kazuki explain, and pushes his glasses with trembling hand.

'This is by no means a stroke of luck or coincidence, Leon know what he is doing, it seems I judged to early maybe his earlier words of blessing being weakened hold some truth' thought Kazuki, as his finger hold his chin.

"Leon just who the hell are you ?" Kazuki ask with a gleam from his eyes.

"The same as you, the students of Leviathan" Leon smiled, meanwhile Licht does not care about Leon identity at all, as long as Leon didn't do harm to him.
Kazuki sighed.

"From this moment on, we have to rely on Licht's strength to clear this Hidden Tower" Leon point at Licht.

"Then I'll take the lead, let's go !" Licht reach the door, and take a look at Leon agreement, Leon nod and then Licht open the door. The three of them enter the door.

"Keep walking and never stop you hear me !" Leon shouted.

What await them beyond the door is not a room. an unknown force teleported each of them into a different location, Hidden Tower is different from the usual Tower, this tower present a trial that you have to complete, different from the usual Tower where you just have to reach the highest floor and reap it's reward.

Every Hidden Tower have different trial, and this Hidden Tower have a trial called, Eternal Night. It will be different in difficulty for each person, because the night represent their own darkness, fear and nightmare.

Leon knows what he have to do, walk just walk in his own endless darkness.
As someone who have readed many books, webnovel, light novel, horror movie, believe it or not what he scared about are as many as an ocean, but what truly scare him is not a things or a living being, it's a situation.

"Being stranded without anything, isolated without stimulation, all senses shutted off, and fall into endless depravity, killing someone is better than going through this" he voice his ultimate fear, his ultimate nightmare.

The true terror will not come abruptly but it will come one by one.

The first thing this darkness deprived of him is his vision, all light faded though in the first place this place has been really dark since the start so it's meaningless he just have to move forward.

The second thing is smell, the smell of this place is almost nonexistent anyway.
The third thing is his sense of taste, for him it's not that much.

The fourth thing is his sense of touch, he can't feel anything including if he have walked or not, what carried him now is only his mind, he can't feel his breath he does not know if he did breathing or not, but at least he is still alive so it's enough as him being living.

The fifth thing, the sense of hearing finally he does not know if he walked forward or not, he does not know, he know the true horror of his nightmare.
Aimlessly walking for eternity, eventually going insane, now it's just whether he can continue to walk without stopping or will he kill himself.

He strongly choose the former, he don't want to die just yet, he want to see his world in clear views, he want to travel it see the things he write in greater clarity.
Step by step he walk, with that purpose in mind.

Time is meaningless in this endless darkness, he is immortal because of his nightmare, one year, two years, three years.

Each passing year will erase a little of his sense of self, but strangely he would still walk, without stopping.

He is by no means a weak willed person, because if he is then he would rather choose to die rather than enduring this kind of torment.

'I want to exist' a thousand years passed in this manner, his physical body never change, staying like that.
