Art left the office and immediately took out his Fantastic Beasts book and looked up Hidebehinds.

M.O.M. Classification XXXX

The Hidebehind is an accidentally created species, which was imported to North America by Old World crook Phineas Fletcher. Fletcher, a trader in banned artifacts and creatures, had intended to import a trafficked Demiguise into the New World, with the aim of manufacturing Invisibility Cloaks. The Demiguise escaped on board ship and bred with a stowaway ghoul. Their resultant offspring escaped into Massachusetts' forest when Phineas's ship docked and their descendants continue to infest the region today. 

The Hidebehind is nocturnal and has the power of invisibility. Those who have seen it describe a tall, silver-haired creatures, something like a skinny bear. Its preferred prey is humans, which Magizoologists speculate is the result of the known to treat the unfortunate creatures in his power. 

Closing the book, he frowned and thought that the Hidebehind was a pitiful creature that was created at the hands of wizard brutality. Art only had a few months before he took all of his OWL exams and needed to brush up if he wanted all Outstandings on his exams. 

Art quickly found the twins and Cedric and told them that he was going to America for the last half of the school year. The twins were dumbstrucked as they just stared at Art while Cedric chuckled and wish him luck. 

"What about our exams? How are we supposed to pass without you here!?" Fred asked. 

Art laughed loudly as Cedric just shook his head in derision. 

The twins and Cedric spent more time in the Room of Requirement with Art these last few months, practicing Transfiguration, Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Astronomy and Herbology. Art also made time for his Healing, Wards, Care of Magical Creatures and Runes. 

Cedric took an interest in Healing and Art taught him a few simple spells and potions. 

Hagrid had became the for Care of Magical Creatures and asked Art to help him with his lessons. 

"Start small but interesting Hagrid, like Nifflers." Art advised looking over Hagrid's plan. 

"I planned to do Hippogriffs… but Nifflers are good too." Hagrid grumbled, scratching his head. 

"Unicorns are interesting too, just keep the male students back." 

The school year continued on and soon Art was leaving to the Ministry for his OWLs. Although Art was prepared his felt nervous and jittery. OWLs shaped the future path of your career and though Artland had no idea what he was doing in the future, he wanted to give himself as many options as possible. 

Dumbledore was personally escorting him to the Ministry and then straight home to his parents where he would pack and say goodbye to them for six months. Before he met Dumbledore, he went to the Owlry and found Grey who was mad at him for not paying attention to him for a while. 

Art apologized and took out a large rat and threw it at him. Grey caught it and gave Art a long side glance before digging in. Art laughed and waited for him to finish before tying one letters and a parcel to his legs. 

"For Fleur, okay?" Art stroked his feathers gently before sending him off. 

The letter was explaining that Art was going overseas and how he missed her, the gift was a necklace he saw in Diagon Alley. 

He soon met Dumbledore in his office. 

"You ready?" he asked, a smile on his kind face. 

"I am." Art said. 

"The exams will take over 8 hours in total but I think you should be able to finish in 6 hours, especially the practical part. Now take my hand." 

Art looked at him suspiciously, "I thought it was impossible to Apparrate inside of Hogwarts." 

"Well… being the Headmaster has its perks." Dumbledore gave a mysterious smile. 

Art took his hand, not asking any other questions. They soon Disapparated and appeared somewhere in London. Dumbledore guided him into an old telephone booth where he dialed 62442 and spoke into the phone, "Albus Dumbledore and Artland Cason." 

Soon the booth started to shake and sink into the ground. Finally the booth stopped and a female voice sounded out, "Welcome to the Ministry of Magic, Level 8, the Atrium." 

Exiting the booth, Art saw the familiar sight of the Atrium which was filled with activity of witches and wizards going on there way. Dumbledore and Artland made their way towards the Department of Magical Education. 

Arriving there, Art was surprised to find Amelia, Cornelius Fudge, Barty Crouch and the pink toad lady that attacked him from behind. 

"Quite an audience today Cornelius." Dumbledore said, raising an eyebrow. 

"Well he is representing The UK Ministry of Magic overseas, we are here to see if he is all you made him up to be." Fudge said, hiding a small sneer that Art didn't miss. 

Art threw him an arrogant smile, "Shouldn't be too hard, Ministry standards don't seem to be too difficult." 

Rage filled the Minister's face while Crouch through him a glare. Even Amelia gave him a withering look while the pink toad's smile remained but her eyes narrowed. 

"Be respectful Art." Dumbledore said quietly. 

"Respect is earned, not given." Art muttered and took a seat, taking out quills and ink. 

"Do you have a subject you wish to start with?" an old man asked, his hands filled with exams. 

"Doesn't matter." Art said, grabbing the first exam from him. 

The man nodded and sat down in front of him, watching him closely. 

For the next 6 hours Art wrote a number exams for all his subjects. Crouch and Fudge came and went, periodically checking in on his progress. Art finally placed his quill down and massaged his sore hand. 

The old man came and collected the last exams and left with them. Soon eight older men came over and lined up. 

"These gentlemen will be giving you the practical part of the exam." Dumbledore said quietly. 

Art nodded and gave a smile towards them respectfully, "It's an honour."

A elderly lady stepped forward and said, "I am Griselda Marchbanks, head of Wizardry Education Authority. I will be testing your Transfiguration." 

"Perfect. Shall we start?" 

Madam Marchbanks nodded and brought out a number of objects for him to transfigure, which he did with ease. 

She smiled and asked, "I heard you are an animagus, care to show me? For extra marks of course." 

Art smiled and shifted into a Wampus, causing the examiners to applaud lightly.

"Perfect Mrs. Cason, now let's move to Charms." 


An older gentleman stepped forward and introduced himself as Professor Tofty.

Art nodded and performed to numerous charms he asked perfectly. He smiled and wrote on his board. Tofty tested him in Defence Against the Dark Arts and Astronomy. 

"Very good Mr. Cason! Now I heard you are able to cast a patronus?" he asked with excitement in his eyes. 

"Of course professor." Art casted his Thunderbird patronus causing everyone to gasp. 

"Is that… a Thunderbird?" one of the examiners asked in shock. 

"Yes." Amelia said proudly, her eyes glowing with pride. 

"Incredible! Incredible Mr. Cason!" Tofty said, his old eyes full of life. 

Art smiled, "Mr. Tofty, I created a spell based off of the Patronus, can I show you? For extra marks of course." 

Tofty was shocked but quickly nodded his head. 

"Impetum Patronus!"

A Thunderbird came out of Art's wand but it was covered in blue lightning. It let out a cry. 

"It is an attack base spell that is very versatile." Art said proudly. 

Tofty looked at the bird with amazement in his eyes. He laughed and looked at Dumbledore, "I thought you were overpraising him Albus but it looks like it was true." 

Dumbledore let out a light laugh and nodded, "He is talented." 

The exams continued in this way as Art continued to impress the examiners. Fudge's face had an unnatural look on it as Art continued to impress. Amelia smiled with pride as Art continued to show off. 
A Healer named Miriam Strout tested his healing spells and potions which Art performed beautiful in. She even tried to get Art to take an intern position at St Mungo's. 

Art respectfully declined her and looked towards the Minister for the last test, Dueling. 

"We have prepared an Auror for your duel, Kingsley Shacklebolt." Fudge said through gritted teeth. 

A large black man came out and smiled at Art before bowing and taking out his wand. Art returned the gesture and prepared himself. 

They exchanged spells for a bit until Art suddenly dashed toward him quickly. Shacklebolt was surprised but quickly responded, creating a wall of stone. Art smashed through the stone and casted another created spell. A clone of Art appeared and they both attacked Shacklebolt from different sides. 

Shacklebolt destroyed one of the clones and quickly stunned the remaining. Right when he thought he won, he felt something pressing into his neck. 

"I lost." he said, a small bead of sweat on his forehead. 

Art lowered to wand and took a few deep breaths. The clone spell took a lot of magic as he had to create the clone from pure magic. 

"What the hell was that!?" Fudge said stunned. 

"It's how I duel." Art said, laughing. 

Everyone was silent as they watched Art put his wand away. 

With that the exam was over.

Artland Cason lost everything at a young age to the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters. Though it is years later his anger and hatred burn just as hot.

Clouds covering Sebas's body and after that Sebas suddenly felt a loss of energy in his entire body. The butler uniform used by Sebas was torn apart and his body was only bone. (Ghost Rider). Sebas tried to move his fingers, clenched and opened. Because all of his muscles are gone, his movements feel stiff and slow.

Arthur: "[ Infinite Art ]"
Once again pulled a wad of clouds from his hand and suddenly appeared a large mirror in front of Sebas who made him jump back away from the image seen in the mirror. 
Sebas: Art-art devil fruit. Young master Arthur can turn anything into what he considers beautiful and can create something according to his imagination too, so the ability of this devil fruit...
Art is the soul of the artist expressed. While artworks are the result of an artist's soul description even though the artworks that are reproduced are the result of imitating something, but it can still provide an element of beauty and be able to evoke a feeling for the artist and others. The most important thing here is that element of beauty is subjective, everyone has their judgment whether it is beautiful or not.

After eating the art-art devil fruit, Arthur began to training his mastery over the ability of his devil fruit and hoped to be able to awaken his devil fruit before he set sail on the open sea. With the talent that Arthur got, made him feel that it wasn't too difficult to practice his devil fruit abilities.
Arthur: "For now I will train the speed of changing things according to my desires and my stamina. Because once create a large mirror with [Infinite Art] make me immediately feel my energy is almost depleted, but [Omni Art] just takes a little effort."
 
With the ability of [Omni Art], Arthur can release clouds from his hands that can change anything or anyone into something with what Arthur considers to have artistic value. But Arthur could not give life to inanimate objects. For this ability, Arthur needs the least amount of power and the furthest distance of his cloud to reach 5 meters.
While the ability of [Infinite Art] allows Arthur to bring up anything that has artistic value, yes, whatever Arthur considers having artistic value. But after using this ability, Arthur lost most of his energy when he brought up a large mirror for Sebas.
And with [Liberty Art] making all of Arthur's works of art that use the power of the art-art devil fruit to return to their original form.
Arthur also experimented to see how long the objects he had changed and the things he brought up could last. Arthur's devil fruit ability can last as long as he wants, even though Arthur is sleeping or touching sea stone. But when Arthur sparred with Sebas and collapsed, everything that Arthur had previously changed returned to its original form.
Sebas: "So the ability of young master Arthur can last as long as young master Arthur wants even if he sleeps or touching sea stone. But if young master Arthur passes out or loses consciousness without his will then the ability of the young master Arthur's devil fruit will disappear, possibly also when young master Arthur dies."
 
After Sebas treated Arthur's wounds while he passing out because of hard sparring, Arthur regained consciousness and then tried to stand back and check his body condition.
Sebas: "The young master Arthur's devil fruit ability disappears after you pass out. Is young master Arthur feeling okay?"
Arthur: "There is no problem, so my ability to work as I thought."Arthur thought for a moment and said to Sebas, "Sebas, bring a slave who has committed a great crime here, I want to try another ability of the art-art devil fruit."
Sebas: "Yes, I understand young master Arthur." Sebas disappeared from Arthur's presence and shortly afterward he entered the training room with a slave who was handcuffed and wearing a collar containing a bomb.
Arthur: "Sebas, you should stay away from him a little. [Doom 's Art]" 
 
Arthur removed the sea stone bracelet and touched the slave's shoulder in front of him and suddenly clouds covering the slave's body. The slave tried to resist but was unable to escape. After a while, the cloud disappeared and a naked statue figure appeared in a squatting position while holding hands like he was thinking. Arthur made his abilities based on the artwork of 'The Thinker' created by Auguste Rodin from his previous life. But the face of 'The Thinker' still belonged to the previous slave.
Slave: "What happened to my body?" Shouted the slave who could not move his body.
Arthur: "The ability of [Doom 's Art] will absorb the lives of victims slowly. I want you, Sebas, to calculate how long this ability works. I'm going to the library to finish books that I haven't read." Arthur turned and left Sebas and 'The Thinker'.
Sebas: "Yes, I understand young master Arthur."
Slave: "What are you talking about? Please release me!"
Sebas: "What a devil fruit that I didn't expect ever existed. Young master Arthur is indeed extraordinary, he can think of the use of devil fruit just by the name of the devil fruit and a little information from the last user seen 200 years ago. With the ability of this devil fruit alone can make young masters invincible in the first half of the grand line. I look forward to your progress, young master Arthur."
 
Arthur, who sat in the library, wrote down the possibility of the power of the fruit of the demon arts to develop. The book was written what Arthur got after experimenting with the ability of his devil fruit.
1. The art-art devil fruit user can change or bring up anything which has a solid form, but can not give life to inanimate things and can not give fantasy abilities. Don't know if in awaken state.
2. The devil fruit user can not change the user's body, its need to awaken the devil fruit first. 
3. The ability of the art-art devil fruit remains active even if the user is sleeping or in contact with sea stones.
4. The ability of the art-art devil fruit disappears when the user loses consciousness and dies. Don't know if in awaken state.
5. The distance and speed of changing objects increases according to the user's ability to increase.
 
Arthur: Right now I can use the abilities of [Omni Art], [Infinite Art], [Liberty Art] and [Doom's Art] that I just tried. The next ability that I think to try next is [Art's room] and [Doom's Day].
Arthur: [Art's Room] the room where I make art. So it's like the ability of [Omni Art] but I made it an attack in all directions. The possibility of the work that I will make is random because I have not been able to focus on several works of art at the same time for my ability.

"Yes even Akashino relied on every Elementalist who participated in the war against Quintela a long time ago." Ryūshi added.

"Do you have someone who you can rely on??" Ryūshi happily asked.

"I-I-I don't know...." Ryūsei muttered as he hesitated to answer Ryūshi's questions.

"But I'll take your advice I'll stop doing everything all on my own." Ryūsei muttered.

"But I'm sorry I got last place in the first round..." Ryūsei muttered in a sad kind of tone.

"What are you so sad about??" Ryūshi asked.

"I'm proud of you Ryūsei, you did your best even knowing the odds you had were slim" Ryūshi happily said.

"Violet was so powerful the weird way she combine spells, the way she has more than 1 Elemental Art... Even using my ability was pointless" Ryūsei muttered.

"It wasn't at all pointless, Violet had already mastered the Synthesis Sage Art that your Grandfather Arashi taught her" Ryūshi replied.

"Synthesis Sage Art?? What is that?" Ryūsei asked.

"You clearly don't listen to your classes much do you??" Ryūshi happily teased.

"It's not my fault classes get boring..." Ryūsei replied.

"You and Akashino are really alike" Ryūshi teased.

"In the Elemental World we lived in there  are about 6 Divisions that classifies each Elemental Art" Ryūshi replied.

"The first is the most basic one of all is the "Pure Elemental Art" which regular Elementalist use for example a Fire-based Elementalist using a pure fire spell" Ryūshi happily said.

"The second is the one we use Ryūsei, "Dragon Sage Art" which we Dragon Sages use where we combine our Elemental Art with Dragon Energy" Ryūshi added.

"The third one is "Synergy Sage Art" a rare type of Elemental Art" Ryūshi happily said.

"The only known Elementalist capable of doing this is the 1st Grand Elementalist, Akashino Shitetsu" Ryūshi added.

"What does Synergy Sage Art even do??" Ryūsei asked.

"Synergy Sage Art is a special type of Elemental Art in which an Elementalist combines 2 or more Elemental Arts to create a new Elemental Art" Ryūshi added.

"In short Synergy Sage Art is what you call energy combination" Ryūshi added.

"Synthesis Sage Art is a type of art in which an Elementalist combines 2 or more spells to create a fusion-based spell." Ryūshi happily said.

"Violet Ryūgū is an example of a Sythesis user" Ryūshi added.

"Next up is Demonic Art, A type of art in which the Demons who embody magic use..." Ryūshi muttered.

"What's the last one???" Ryūsei asked as he notices something bothering Ryūshi.

"The last one is a forbidden Sage Art in which must never be use in the Elemental World ever again" Ryūshi replied with a serious look on his face.


"Why?? Is it really that dangerous??" Ryūsei asked.

"The forbidden Sage Art is known as Chaos Sage Art, It's a forbidden type of Sage Art in which an Elementalist combines his/her own Elemental Art with Chaos Energy." Ryūshi replied with a serious look on his face.

"Is Chaos Sage Art really that dangerous???" Ryūsei asked.

"Yes, As this forbidden Sage Art is a gateway to death, It's the bridge between the Demonic Art and our pure Elemental Art." Ryūshi replied.

"This forbidden Sage Art was discovered and used by none other  Stella Shitetsu, Akashino's wife." Ryūshi added.

"Chaos Sage Art is a type of art in which the user combines his/her own Elemental Art with Chaos Energy making the Elemental Art more chaotic and powerful." Ryūshi replied.

"Then why is it forbidden?? It's sounds so cool to use it-" Ryūsei asked but he was then interrupted by Ryūshi.

"Ryūsei... Chaos Sage Art is a double edge sword..." Ryūshi muttered.

"It's dangerous for both the user and the one who's fighting the user. If a person absorbs the Chaos Energy and there body can't handle it... They'll be petrified and their bodies will forever be turned to stone..." Ryūshi replied.

"You don't mean..." Ryūsei muttered as he couldn't believe on what he just heard.

"That's right, If an Elementalist manages to somehow expose themselves to Chaos energy.... They'll be petrified and their bodies will forever turn to stone" Ryūshi muttered.

"Even the user is at threat with Chaos Sage Art as well... if he/she is in a weak state and he/she manages to use this art.... He/She will petrify himself/herself." Ryūshi replied.

"Also the more you use this art the more your mind will be lost as this art also takes a great toll on our minds." Ryūshi added.

"As this art can lead as to insanity" Ryūshi replied.

"Is there anyone alive who uses this forbidden Sage Art??" Ryūsei asked.

"Why are you asking??" Ryūshi asked.

"I mean if Chaos Sage Art is that dangerous then the users of this Sage Art is a great threat to the Elemental World" Ryūsei replied.

"You don't have to worry..." Ryūshi muttered.

"The last user of Chaos Sage Art was sealed centuries ago..." Ryūshi added but it didn't took long for Ryūsei to analyze who was Ryūshi referring.

"You don't mean that... Ryūshi...." Ryūsei muttered.

"Quintela Shiori is the last remaining user of Chaos Sage Art..." Ryūshi replied.

"Ryūshi are you okay???" Ryūsei asked.

"Ryūsei, It's about time you know what threat you'll be dealing with someday" Ryūshi replied as he then suddenly a warp gate opened besides Ryūsei.

"Get in" Ryūshi said with a serious tone on his voice and both Ryūsei and Ryūshi then entered inside the warp gate.

"Where are we???" Ryūsei asked as they were inside a canyon with no presence of any life and the area around them was nothing but darkness.

"We're at the Dragon's Valley..." Ryūshi muttered.

"Wait isn't Dragon's Valley a forbidden place for Elementalist" Ryūsei replied.

"It is.... Do you know why??" Ryūshi asked.

"No, I just heard it from my father once that I should never go to this place" Ryūsei replied.

"Ryūsei, I want you to take a look around" Ryūshi replied as he then releases a bit of energy creating a light source for them.

Ryūsei then looks around and sees hundreds of Elementalist, Plants and Demons petrified.

"Ryūshi.... what happened here??..." Ryūsei asked as he couldn't believe what he just saw.

"This is the impact of what Chaos Sage Art can do to the Elemental World" Ryūshi replied with a serious tone.

"You mean Quintela did this??" Ryūsei asked.

"Yes, Hundreds of years ago... During the war, We had Quintela cornered with her Demons here on Dragon's Valley....." Ryūshi replied.

"But.... that's what we thought as that's the first and last time she used Chaos Sage Art....." Ryūshi muttered.

"She released an explosion of Chaos Energy and the ones who were caught within the explosion were petrified instantly" Ryūshi replied.

"This is the great burden I'm carrying.....
The lives I couldn't save.... I watch them helpless as there bodies turned to stone" Ryūshi muttered.

"This tragedy right here is a reminder to what Chaos Art can do to the Elemental World...." Ryūshi added.

"Ryūsei.....don't make the same mistake as we did hundreds of years ago....." Ryūshi muttered.

"Is there any way we can reverse the effect of Chaos Sage Art???" Ryūsei asked.

"Sadly no.... We even tried Jikan's time reversal spell and sadly it didn't do anything....." Ryūshi muttered.

"As there is still no way to purify even Chaos itself." Ryūshi added 

"There is something that still bothers me...." Ryūsei stated.

"Only the Crowned Dragons and a few Elementalist from the Sage Council know about this including your father" Ryūshi replied.

"I understand but why do we have to keep this hidden??" Ryūsei asked.

"Here in the current Elemental World there is only 5 division for the Elemental Art known to the public" Ryūshi muttered.

"As Chaos Sage Art was erased from the Elemental World but the scars it left behind had a huge impact in the Elemental World" Ryūshi added.

"If word got out about Chaos Sage Art, Then Elementalist would find ways to revive the forbidden Sage rt and the Kingdom and Elementalist that live there would be in danger once more." Ryūshi added.

"Don't worry, I won't tell anyone.... It's probably the best to keep this a secret from everyone" Ryūsei replied.

"We should probably head back, It's getting a little late" Ryūshi stated.

"Yeah, They might get too worried if we aren't home by sundown" Ryūsei replied.

"Can you wait here a second?" Ryūshi asked and he then approaches the people who were petrified during the war.

"Hey Guys... It's me..." Ryūshi muttered.

"Don't worry about the Elemental World...I promise till my final breath to protect the world you traded your lives for... I won't put all your sacrifices in vain" Ryūshi muttered.

"The person with me right now... He's the 4th Grand Elementalist... And I believe he'll be the one to end this war" Ryūshi happily.
"After all that's what Akashino, Me and the Crowned Dragons believed" Ryūshi happily said and he then approaches Ryūsei.

"Sorry to keep you waiting" Ryūshi happily said and he then opens a warp gate and both Ryūsei and Ryūshi entered the gate and soon as they entered they arrived at the castle.

They then went inside and they saw Yuki, Shizen, Shadow, Kayosha, Catherine, Kasai, Sora, Jikan, King Yogan and Violet eating at the table.

"D-D-Dad you're here and you to miss Violet" Ryūsei asked as he was shocked seeing the both of them.

"That's aunt Violet to you Ryūsei" Violet pouted.

"I'll forgive you this time since you don't know yet" Violet added.

"W-W-Wait!!! You're my aunt!!!" Ryūsei asked in shock.

A long time ago it was written in the ancient books of the past, Demons have once roamed free in the Elemental World an era in which the Demons hunts us down for food, pleasure or even satisfaction.

The Demon King, The strongest demon during the ancient era conquered the Elemental World striking fear through the lands enslaving all of the Elementalist killing anyone who fought against him.

The era of misery was upon us but a mysterious group of Elementalist fought back driving an all out war against the Demons. But unfortunately not all Elementalist fought alongside them...

Quintela Shiori also known as the "Empress of Death" turned her back against her own people and fought alongside with the Demon King.

With her help they manage to turn the tides of war towards the Demons but it suddenly all changed...

When "He" arrived...

Akashino Shitetsu a young boy who was born without an Elemental Art. Even though he was born different he never once question himself why he was cursed.

With the aid of an ancient creature he obtained unrivaled power and skill shifting the war in their favor. With the Demons almost annihilated and pushed back to the shadows... 

Quintela made a desperate attempt causing her to gain unimaginable power quickly overpowering the wounded Akashino.

With the numerous injuries he had and the few amounts of mana he had left... The ultimate sacrifice was made...

Akashino was forced to seal Quintela away with an ancient seal taught by his master, The Dragon King.

But unfortunately the seal had a price of separating his soul from his body in causing him to be sealed as well along with Quintela.

The Dragon King feared that one day Quintela might return once again and there will be no one powerful enough to stop her.

So he chanted a spell on Akashino's lifeless body creating a reincarnation cycle that resurrects his body with a new soul from generation to generation.

Centuries had passed since then an old era falls and a new one always rises. Following the death of the 3rd Grand Elementalist a young boy named Ryūsei was born in the Elemental World.

But unlike most Elementalist he was born without having any Elemental Art, With this everyone around him treated him harshly.

People would avoid him thinking he was cursed, Some of the kids tormented him for years and there were some who even go as far as using there Elemental Arts against our helpless hero.

With Ryūsei so fascinated about the past and certain events happened, Will faith play a role once again or certain events from the past will happen once again with the return of the "Empress of Death".

 BRAVE NEW WORLD: Examining the Zeitgeist at THE ART STORY
My Latest Discovery:
I am excited to share a vital resource for online art history research called The Art Story.  This resource is a growing compendium for art lovers, artists, curators, writers, educators, students and the curious looking for concise and expansive art histories.  They have accumulated the largest online encyclopedia of art in the world, with over 1000 topic pages. The Art Story has specialized pages to address your interests, whether you are looking up an artist (Picasso, Michelangelo, or Kara Walker), an art movement (Impressionism, Performance, or Baroque), or an art concept (The Readymade, Renaissance Humanism, or Collage).
Founder Michael Zurakhinsky started The Art Story, noticing that art history education wasn't always accessible or factual online.  One of the best resources was Wikipedia, but as an art history learning tool its' value seemed limited. He was disappointed that prominent arts organizations such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York City only cover their own collection, do not cover the rest of art history, and often provide links to Wikipedia instead of their own curatorial research on their website.  Many encyclopedic art textbooks are terribly outdated. Newer, topic-based books are more inclusive, but they focus on singular subjects. To understand how a particular artist or movement connects to others is a herculean task. After 12 years with hundreds of writers on the job, The Art Story is now available to all, and for free!
The Challenge:
As a former museum educator at MoMA, Brooklyn Museum, and Studio Museum in Harlem, I was always craving a comprehensive tool for art history research on the internet. I am happy to have discovered The Art Story, and I use it in researching classes I teach, including my current online course at Pratt Institute, "Brave New World: Daily Artmaking Ritual."
I took The Art Story for a research spin in contemplation of these unprecedented times. I share here with you how I put together a grouping of artworks navigating the consistent, accessible architecture of the Art Story website. I was able to save hours of research time and enjoyed having an easy, reliable way to travel through the site connecting artist's works to different art movements, influences, genres, and other concepts.
A Brave New World – Contemplations and Discoveries:
Artists throughout history are known to interpret and challenge the zeitgeist of their times. The year 2020 has amplified ideological battlegrounds and ignited public health and environmental challenges.  We battle two concurrent pandemics in the United States and globally; the coronavirus and the fight for human rights spearheaded by Black Lives Matter. While thinking about the global pandemic, we can examine artworks made during past pandemics including the concurrent Syphilis and Spanish Flu outbreaks in Post-WW1 Europe and the AIDS crisis in the 1990s, with it's devastating impact on New York City. Climate change and environmental issues have erupted globally with science denial by the United States government affecting our ability to contain the coronavirus.  Many activist artists are making work about these issues, let's look at art history to compare notes.

The Funeral: Tribute to Oskar Panizza, 1917-18

As I started my research, I was thinking about artists who lived through the previous world pandemic.  Looking up the keyword Spanish Flu brought me to an article about Egon Schiele (The Female Nude) After reading about the artist, who died very young from the Spanish Flu in 1918, I became curious about other artists painting that year.  I found an artwork that encapsulates that pandemic era perfectly.
German Expressionist George Grosz painted A Funeral: Tribute to Oskar Panizza in homage to writer and psychiatrist Oskar Panizza, known for his critiques against the post-WWI German government. This passionately expressive painting deploys Cubist and Futurist techniques to capture the chaos of plague, war, syphilis, and alcohol. Grosz described The Funeral as a "gin alley of grotesque dead bodies and madmen…. A teeming throng of possessed human animals… think: that wherever you step, there's the smell of shit."
George Grosz captured the tight quarters and frenetic pathos of a city riddled with disease. The Funeral is ablaze with color, a tattered flag, a priest waving a glowing white cross, a club festooned with  a "Dance Tonight" sign, bodegas and cafés that stand in counterpoint to the huddled masses and tightly-packed flaming apartments. From a contemporary lens, this hallucinatory hellscape speaks to our collective unconscious, as fears of disease and death have colored the urban landscape, where there's no option but constant motion.
Even though George Grosz paints a grim scenario, the colors and the details feel so rich and satisfying to me as a viewer. The Funeral makes me wonder if imagining a monstrous hellscape can be cathartic. Which other artists throughout history have created their own visions of hell to express their societal concerns?
 Felix Gonzalez-Torres

I was searching through The Art Story for an artist who was making work during the AIDS Crisis, so I did a keyword search on the main search bar. Felix Gonzalez-Torres came up first in the search. 
Cuban-born American Minimalist and Conceptual artist, Felix Gonzalez-Torres brought his personal history and politics to tackle issues such as gay rights, gun violence, and the AIDS crisis. Gonzalez-Torres tracked the impact of the crisis through creating intimate works, foreshadowing and later mourning the loss of his lover, Ross Laylock, who died due to AIDS-related complications. Gonzalez-Torres considered his muse, Laylock, his primary audience.  Untitled: Lover Boy captures the depth of eternal love. The two sets of windows ajar, with curtains blowing into an interior domestic space conjure breath, the intertwined souls of two men partnered in transcendence of earthly boundaries.
Untitled: Lover Boy was made in an atmosphere of government neglect of the disproportionately affected the LGBTQ+ community.  I think about each of the over 230, 000 people who have died from the coronavirus in the United States thus far.  Each one of them is connected to someone, somewhere who feels that eternal love like Gonzalez-Torres did for Laylock.  We walk alongside our lost ones. Looking at works by Gonzalez-Torres can help us to cope creatively with grief, and mortality.

One of my favorite ways to search through The Art Story is to look at the Artworks page for each artist I am interested in.  When I looked up Kehinde Wiley, I was reminded of his 2017 Presidential portrait of Barack Obama, hanging in the National Portrait Gallery and how it conjured conservative resistance, because of Wiley's 2012 painting Judith Beheading Holofernes.
Many famed artists including Artemisia Gentileschi, Lucas Cranach the Elder, and Caravaggio have painted this symbolic scene from the deuterocanonical Book of Judith, where Judith seduces and beheads Holofernes, who was generally intent on destroying her city of Bethulia. Historic paintings of this biblical story are often read as a feminist victory, but Wiley's Judith fights a different battle.
In Wiley's "Holofernes head" we see a Karen, a Becky, humorously and quite viscerally exposing feminism's focus on white women, that often ignores racial disparities.  Throughout this historic 2020 election, we can't help but look back to 2016's election to remember the commitment that 94% black women made to vote against Trump, while 53% of white women voted for Trump (according  to York Times exit polls).  An even higher percentage of white women voted for Trump in 2020.  When a white woman acts against all women, does she not become a Holofernes, a "man" attempting to destroy Judith's people?  Amy Coney Barrett becomes our current symbol for a woman inserted by patriarchy to act against the interests of women, potentially dismantling Roe v. Wade, jeopardizing a woman's right to choose, in this country that was originally founded to separate church and state.

Your Body is A Battleground, 1989

The Art Story includes choice artists' quotes at the top of each Artist's page.  This is such a valuable resource for art writers, educator's and curators, who want to get at the heart of the artist's intent.  Reading American Conceptual Artist Barbara Kruger's explanation of her graphic text-based works as geared to "short attention spans" in 1989 feels so contemporary. 
Barbara Kruger's bold works deploy her training as a graphic designer to create images and phrases that resonate, functioning both in public space and the contemporary art world. Best known for her silkscreen prints with captions over found photographs, she also creates site specific installations, video, and audio works. Her prints from the 1980s encapsulate "Reaganomics," including this Your Body is a Battleground screenprint defending women's reproductive rights, which was originally created for the March for Women's Lives, in Washington, D.C in 1989. This image, set in Kruger's signature palette of black, white and red, splits a woman's face in half.   Half photographic portrait, half x-ray, this powerful image references the constant probing and control of the female body in America.  
Echoing the words of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1933- 2020), the United States Supreme Court justice who fought tirelessly for women's rights: "The State controlling a woman would mean denying her full autonomy and full equality."
 Ana Mendieta

Cuban artist Ana Mendieta is renowned for her contributions to the Body Art, Land Art, and Performance Art Movements.  On each Artist's page on The Art Story, there are links to every art movement associated with the artist, making it easy to find (and to dive into) connections.
Her powerful Silueta series contemplates the cycles of birth, life, and death through performing various ephemeral actions in natural environments. Mendieta ritualistically asserted her form in relation to the seascape in Untitled: Silueta Series, Mexico (1976/1991). The deep impression of her body in the sand is activated by red pigment, the blood, the body, the soul's imprint washed away by the ocean's waves.  The vulnerability of the body and of the natural environment are seamlessly interrogated here, evoking Paleolithic goddess power, a matrilineage dating back to the Venus of Willendorf circa 30,000 BCE as well as childlike fantasy mermaids and bloody snow angels.
Mendieta's Silueta series shares a feminist viewpoint on the environment that reverberates currently, with climate change affecting us globally. The Americas have been hit hard by fires, increasingly destructive hurricanes and global warming. According to Aaron Bernstein, Director of Center for Climate, Health and the Global Environment at Harvard University, climate change has caused habitat loss for animals, and germs and diseases are spreading as animals congregate more closely to each other and human-populated areas.  I ponder how Ana Mendieta would respond now to the coronavirus as part of her lexicon.

There is an art in everyone's life which you use to make yourself perfect

I thought about it, and couldn't really find any flaws in his argument. Nick himself told me that learning by myself, was much better than learning from him. 'Nick was really unwilling to teach me the Art of Hidden Weapons. He wanted me to develop naturally, which would make sense. But the Art of Stealth? I understand the Hidden Weapons, but Stealth?' I asked myself.

I said "You mentioned that you want to see another master grow up. Don't get me wrong, I always planned to master my Arts. I just don't understand why this would be a favour for you". He smiled, and said "You see, you have something other masters don't". I asked "What would that be?". He replied "You might be able to master all three Arts, not just one". I thought about it, and asked "How do you know, I learned three different Arts?".

He replied in a "as a matter of fact" manner. "Because I saw it with my own eyes? You displayed all those things during the battle. That is how I know". I was confused. 'I never used the Art of Medicine during that battle. What is he on about?' I asked myself. I wasn't sure how he saw the Art of Medicine in my skills, so I asked "I never used my Art of Medicine during the battle. How could you possibly know about it?".

This time, he looked at me confused and asked. "Art of Medicine? What are you talking about?". I replied, "You said that I'm able to master three different Arts. I never used my Art of Medicine, so what the hell are YOU on about?". 

He replied "I never heard of anyone developing an Art of Medicine. What I'm talking about is Art of Rage". I replied immediately "What nonsense are you spouting? Have you gone senile old man?". He replied angrily "Want me to smash your head in? I've lived in this world for much longer than you, and I never heard of anyone who practiced that Art of Medicine of yours. Where did you even get that from?". 

I was stunned. 'So some kind of nonsensical Art of Rage exist, but Art of Medicine doesn't?' I thought, and questioned my own sanity. I shook my head a few times, as if in a bad dream. I said "I learned the Art of Medicine! Hell, I even improved it!". The old man asked "Where exactly did you learn it? Is it a killing Art?". I replied "From the same person. He developed it for most of his life, and I'm the sole inheritor. Killing Art? I wiped out a whole…". I stopped myself, and didn't say anymore. He said "Continue, what stopped you there boy?". I replied "That's all you get. Besides, your Art of Rage is pure nonsense. How could there be an Art like that?".

He replied "Tell that to the old monster from the Art of Rage, and you will lose a few limbs. I'm surprised you haven't heard of it. As I said, there are three masters left, all of us are masters of the forbidden Arts. The Art of Stealth, Art of Hidden Weapons and Art of Rage. These are considered forbidden Arts, and practitioners of these Arts are hunted down, like ducks". 

He continued "I also told you, that you are a rare find. To be precise, almost impossible to find. I never saw such a promising youth…". I stopped him, and said "Wait, you want to tell me, I can become a master in the Art of Rage?". This idea alone, was just stupid in my mind. He nodded, and said "That is correct. There were those who mastered multiple Arts, but no one mastered three or more at once. When you master one Art, you have the right to call yourself a Master. When you master two Arts, you have the right to call yourself a Grand Master". I asked "Then what about three or more?".

He smiled and replied, "I don't know". I was lost for words. The old man continued, "There has never been anyone who mastered three Arts. No one thought it was possible. Mastering one Art takes a long time. Two? You would be old already, and three? No Human had enough lifespan, to master three Arts". I asked "So how the hell am I supposed to do this?".

He replied "Because you have us. You are also natural in those Arts. If we point you in the right direction, you have a chance to master all three Arts". I asked "Why do you want to do that?". He smiled, and replied "Do you want to hide? Do you want to be chased for the skills you know? You may say, this is also for the better future of our Arts. All masters left something for future generations. We want to leave someone like you". 

I was shocked for sure. I asked in confusion "Does that mean, you want to teach me?". He replied, "I will not teach you how to do things, I will only give you some hints. You already know that to become a master, you have to develop naturally. Because you got this far by yourself, I believe you have good chances of becoming a master of three different Arts". 

He then continued, "Have you heard the story of each Art?". I replied "I only heard about Endros. He was the one who developed the Art of Hidden Weapons". He nodded, and said "In that case, I will tell you a story about the Art of Stealth. Listen well boy". I nodded, and listened. The old man said "Endros as you know, was the one who developed the Art of Hidden Weapons. Or rather, he was the one who started that Art. The Art of Stealth, has nothing to do with Endros. He never developed it, and never learned it. It actually precedes Endros".

I asked "Didn't the Art of Stealth, and Art of Hidden Weapons meant to go together?". He laughed, and replied "Each and every Art, is a separate ultimate killing technique. None of them were meant for each other. True, Art of Stealth and Hidden Weapons do complement each other. That doesn't mean all who learned the Art of Hidden Weapons, learned the Art of Stealth too. I told you already, Art of Stealth precedes Endros".

I thought about it, and replied "Wait. You want to tell me, that no one before Endros actually came up with an idea to use Hidden Weapons?". He shook his head, and replied "I never said that. No one ever managed to create an Art out of it, or at least start it up. People used hidden weapons for sure, but it was not the Art of Hidden Weapons. Your mindset is very narrow about Arts, which is understandable. Remember, stealth, is not the same as Art of Stealth. Same with hidden weapons, it is not the same as the Art of Hidden Weapons". 

I nodded, and motioned for him to continue. He said "I will, if you don't interrupt me. Just listen quietly and when I'm done, you can ask questions". I nodded, and stayed quiet. He continued "The story begins in the year 417 of the Selesian Calendar. It was the 54th day of the Autumn. A young woman named Arien, travelled through the forest in order to reach her village. She suddenly noticed a strange shadow of a person. The person must've been hidden by a tree, because only the shadow was sticking out. When she called out, the shadow simply disappeared. Arien was very curious by nature. Baffled by that sight, she investigated the tree, but found nothing. Empty handed, she returned to her village".

After a short pause, he continued "Arien shared that story with her family back at home, but no one believed her. She herself passed it off as her mind playing a trick. A few months went by, and this happened to Arien regularly. She saw a shadowy figure, that quickly disappeared when Arien tried to get close. No one believed her, but she couldn't get rid of her curiosity. The shadow and the person it belonged to, simply melted away every time she got closer. She decided to learn how to get close to that shadow". 

"Arien began learning how to sneak up to the shadow. She tried loads of things, and learned a lot during that time, but she was never able to approach the shadow. Years passed. Arien got married, and gave birth to a child. She almost forgot about the shadow, when it appeared again. She tried to ignore it, but in the end, she couldn't. This prompted her to again seek different ways of reaching that shadow".

"Time went by. Arien became older. Her kids grew up, and had their own families. Only one thing was bothering her. She was never able to reach that mysterious shadow. Now that she became older, and had loads of free time, she decided to continue. Her skills in stealth were already well developed, she only had to reach that shadow. On one fateful day, when she spotted the shadow, she managed to reach it. To her surprise, there was no person, only the shadow alone. She didn't know what to think of it, but soon realised something. Through most of her life, she was trying to reach something, that never existed. Something that was there, but not there at the same time. In the instance she realised all that, she noticed that she could do the same. She could also become just a shadow, exist and not exist at the same time".

The old man stopped for a while, and I thought this was the end. I was about to ask something, but he continued. "This is just one part of the story. I told you, all Arts are deadly, so let me continue". I nodded, and listened. "Arien became old. She became a grandmother to a few little kids. All her life was peaceful, until one day. Arien left the village for a few days, to visit her oldest son in a village not far away. The rest of her family still lived in her home village. She wasn't aware that someone invaded her country. Moreover, her village. The invaders from the Mareland Kingdom passed by her village, killing everyone. On her way back, she saw no soldier, no warriors, no battles. Only when she returned to her home village, did she discovered what had happened. Banners of the Mareland Kingdom placed everywhere. Corpses of killed people filled the streets. The village devastated, in ruins".

"Her family dead, her friends dead as well. As tears welled up in her eyes, she noticed some soldiers. Leftovers of the army that already moved further, to their next target. She couldn't forgive, although old and weak, she couldn't forgive them. With tears in her eyes, she screamed at them. When they noticed her, they froze in place. All the soldiers that saw her, suddenly fell down to their knees, without a breath of life left in them". 

"She was shocked as well. She didn't even realise, what she has accomplished. In fear of the worst, she ran to the neighbouring village. The only place, where her family was still alive. But alas, she was too late. The killing was already in full swing. The hostile army and Arien, must've passed each other somehow. She couldn't contain her tears anymore, and screamed at the top of her lungs "Stop!". All soldiers stopped, and looked at her. When they did, they died. Arien no longer cared whether she could kill people on sight or not, she rushed to her oldest son's house, to find the whole family killed". 

"Arien no longer cried. She walked outside, and disappeared like a shadow that she always chased after. What happened next, was not described by Arien. Only that the whole army was gone, and the invasion stopped. No one in the history knew how this happened, or why. Only Arien knew how. Her last words were "If you chase the shadow, remember that there is a price to pay. I Arien Nightgale tell this story, for those who chase. Know that what you chase, is an Art of Stealth. That's how it shall be called!"".

The story about Nex Wintersteed, a youngster from a small village in the Endrosian Empire. You'll witness the adventures through the protagonist's eyes, as he decides to explore his life.

From an incompetent greenhorn, to a skilled hunter and warrior. Many struggles await him, as well as many wonders to uncover. How will he develop, and what choices will he make? That's something for you to find out, as the story progresses.
