THE SITUATION RIGHT NOW: I've gotten over the majority of my laziness. I'm unlikely to update this much. It's pretty much complete. The novel I'm working on is Dark Seas Leading Demise

Carol, Mr Wilde's personal assistant and a proud member of the LGBTQ community, knocked on the door.
"Your guest, Debbie Connor, has arrived. Would you like to receive her in your office or would you like to receive her in the meeting room?"
Wilmer looked up from his computer and glanced at his watch. It was already four in the afternoon? Time flew by way too quickly. The last thing he remembered eating was breakfast. Where had all that time gone?
"No need, please let her in. I'm thinking of heading out to grab a late lunch myself. You can end early for today if there isn't anything else."
Carol smiled and ushered Debbie in. The ex-lawyer was a lady in her thirties with ginger hair. Although she wasn't very tall, she carried herself confidently, making her appear taller in person.
Wilmer remembered the portfolio Debbie submitted. The lady didn't really have much experience dealing with children so it was a tough choice to leave his children in her hands. Luckily, Wilmer decided to interview the lady and put off making any hasty decisions. Seeing Debbie Connor in person made him rethink his initial opinion of her.
"Good day, Mr Wilde. I heard that you haven't had lunch yet. May I recommend a quaint cafe in the area I'm a personal fan of?"
Wilmer checked his watch. According to Carol, his schedule was free for the rest of the day.
"Sure," he smiled and dismissed Carol.
Carol nodded and watched as her boss left with Ms Connor. The secretary wasn't nosy in her boss' private life. Besides, Debbie was a married lady. Surely she wouldn't have to report it to Mrs Wilde... right?
The cafe Debbie suggested wasn't too far from the office. In fact, it was so secluded that Wilmer wouldn't have found it himself. There was hardly anything about it on the maps. 
The cafe was run by an elderly couple who took pride in their home-brewed drinks and pastries. Wilmer ordered for both of them and took some time to enjoy the ambience. The peacefulness was like a spot of Shangri-La in the busy city.
"I think I will be a regular here," he told the ex-lawyer.
Debbie smiled. "It sure is peaceful, isn't it? I used to come here all the time whenever I was working on a stressful case just before I fought it out in the courtroom."
The CEO nodded. He could understand why. "Why are you interested in becoming a governess? Surely you would have other passions even after leaving your career behind."
Debbie wasn't fazed by how direct Wilmer was. Her smile never wavered.
"I will be honest. If it wasn't for Benjamin bragging about the talented girl called Scarlet, I would probably have never signed up for the job. Benjamin might not have told you, but I was a writer myself. I just lost touch with the pen after publishing my fifth paperback because I found more enjoyment in editing and mentoring aspiring writers. I'm not a very creative person even though I love the beauty of a good book. I just find helping the creation of books more magical than actually writing it."
Wilmer blinked. While it was true that he wanted to engage a governess for Scarlet, he wondered if it would be possible to have Debbie groom the two other children.
"Will you have problems handling two other children as a governess? They don't need much attention because their areas of interest are very different and it takes a more self-directed learning approach."
Debbie tilted her head to the side. Two other children? Benjamin didn't mention anything about it and the world knew that the Wilde's only had one daughter. Could they be illegitimate children? Does Orita Wilde know?
The ex-lawyer hesitated for a long time and Wilmer took the hint.
"It's alright, you don't need to give me an answer now. The school term has only started for them, I will contact you again next week. If you have any questions, feel free to let my secretary know. Carol will assist you as much as she can and I do find you to be a rather suitable candidate."
They charged a little more leisurely after that and enjoyed the home-brewed coffee. Wilmer was impressed with Debbie's enthusiasm about writing and thought that Scarlet might be happy if Debbie accepted his proposal. Still, he didn't want to be too pretentious and make decisions on the girl's behalf.
"It might sound sudden, but I think you will get along really well with Scarlet. She is a naturally curious and creative individual. However, she had gone through some terrible things recently. It would be nice if you could take some time out of your busy schedule to visit Scarlet after school and just talk to her to know her better. As a father, I am a failure. I don't know how else I can help my daughter, who is suffering alone."
Debbie raised her brows. From the rumours, the Wilde's were a very loving family and she was slightly surprised to find that it was true. Still, what did Mr Wilde mean by a failure as a father?
"Pardon my impertinence, but I would like to ask what happened. Why would you consider yourself a failure as a father?"
Wilmer sighed heavily and started telling his long tale. Throughout the tale, Debbie remained silent. Her opinion about the Wilde's changed a little when Wilmer disclosed that Scarlet was adopted. She wasn't given the details about Scarlet's circumstances, but she didn't want to pry. Apparently, it was a decision made by the Ice Queen without consulting the CEO beforehand.
"You don't have any objections to what your wife did? We're not talking about a dog or a cat, we are talking about a child..."
Wilmer chuckled. "No. In fact, I am very happy to have Scarlet in our family. She brings colour into our lives and I can see the positive influence she brings to Alex and my wife. It only troubles me that she wouldn't completely open up to us. I might have made a bad move back then, but it was the only way I thought could pull her out from her depression."
Debbie paused. "Depression?"
Wilmer looked around and shook his head. "Let's take this conversation to a different location, shall we?"


At age 10, Scarlet Liu Xiu Wen was tested with a Mensa IQ of 156.

By age 12, she was publishing books with the pen name Permanent Frost. By age 14, she was a successful vocalist-composer in the band called Britannia. By age 16 Scarlet had a successful career as a model and actress going by the stage name of Liu Xiu Wen.

Human Observation Diary has always kept to a very standard format but one day, a reader pointed out that the blog has recently been differing from its usual format. Intrigued by the trigger, Scarlet investigates her latest human observation - an online NEET by the name of Jedd77.

From further interactions, Scarlet finds herself helplessly drawn to him. As their friendship develops into something more, Scarlet has to make a choice.

To give up her secrecy and allow Jedd77 to be a part of her life? Or continue the game of cat and mouse even after the face reveal.

"I just remembered something important." Professor Luo Xia interrupted, and everyone turned their attention to the old man. 

Karen's graven expression darkened, and she subconsciously shook her head slowly. He smiled and reached out to Susu with his right palm facing up, " May I borrow the invitation card for a minute?"

"Sure." Susu handed the invitation card over to him and watched as he placed the invitation card to the projector. "Zoom." he raised his arm and waved his index and middle finger in the air at the same time. 

"I would deeply appreciate it if everyone could take a look at the zoomed-in invitation card." His voice worked like a mantra as everyone's head followed to the projector slide and focused on the enlarged stamp on the invitation. 

Borrowing a cane from one of the judges, Professor Luo Xia pointed to the tiny leaf corner of the rose stamp and pointed out Susu's initials. "Just like the other designs, this stamp was designed by Yin, Susu."

The crowd murmured as they wondered what this stamp had anything to do with this whole event and proving Karen's wrong doings. "As everyone could see, this design goes quite well with today's rose outfit display, don't you all think that?"

After taking a close look, everyone followed along and nodded to each other. Professor Luo Xia smiled and turned to Susu, "I believe that you must have another way of proving this design as your own. Just like the dress. Am I correct?"

Susu revealed a rare smile, "Of course." She stepped up and removed the invitation from the projector. With the use of her skillful fingers, she poked a few mini holes on some angles of the rose stamp. After that, she folded tiny corners of the design to reach the other corner. When she was done, the invitation card was trimmed down to only the rose stamp and the rose was no longer visible. 

Now, the rose was folded and curved into a rosebud with the tip opened to reveal the mini holes that she had pecked earlier with a pen. She smiled and said to the microphone once again, "Dear, will you turn on the special light again? The projector can remain on, but I will adjust the angle of it so that it wouldn't blind anyone's eye."

"Alright." Chen Mu's voice rung the ears of the audience as they heard hurried footsteps from somewhere above. It was too dark to see anything or anyone. Once the special lighting were turned on and the room darkened to give the highest-quality effect, Susu held the rose bud and let it do its trick for the audience.

Under the projector's view, everyone saw the mini leaf that had her initials dangling as the rosebud's stem. She pulled it slowly and the petals slowly spread into a rose. Once the rose became fully blossomed, everyone saw the colored edges of the petals from earlier reveal her initials at its center. It was magical.

If one didn't believe that this was a design event, then it would definitely be an adult's fairytale land for the day with free admission tickets. Everyone clapped once again, but Professor Luo Xia didn't plan to stop just there.

"Miss. Susu, would you explain to me what happened to your designs from years ago and how long has it been since you've designed these amazing, creative works?" 

"It was several years ago, and that was during the time when I planned on submitting my work for Paris Institute of Design. Unfortunately, two days before the deadline, Miss. Karen came into my room with a sizzling plate of beef and some drinks that she ended up spilling all over my laptop. While I ran to the restroom to clean myself up, she took my laptop and refused to give it back saying she wanted to bring it to the repair shop."

Susu crossed her arms and stared straight at Karen's guilty expression, "And then she came back to tell me that none of the files on my laptop were recoverable. I tried bringing it to a repair store after that, but even then, my files were all damaged."

Professor Luo Xia closed his eyes as he listened to her part of the story and nodded, "I completely and thoroughly understand now. Would you do me another favor?" He snapped his fingers and extended his hand towards his assistant. Quickly, an art portfolio with Karen's name was placed on his opened palm. 

"Would you please go through each and every page of these designs for me? If any of these belong to you, please prove the design with your initials. If you recognize any designers from any resources that you've used for your research in any designs, please point it out as well. I believe everyone here is as interested as I am with what this portfolio holds." 

His assistant brought him and Susu a chair while Karen remained standing. Susu recognized the front page of the portfolio instantly and flipped through the pages while accurately pointing at where her initials laid hidden behind the designs. While roaming through different designs, she also pointed out the different resources she's used or seen before and pulled it up on her phone. 

After half an hour, Professor Luo Xia thanked her for her descriptive explanations. Karen almost urinated herself from the extreme pressure that she was facing from the audience. She only dared to move the slightest of her body when she got tired of standing because everyone would roll their eyeballs to her side once she makes the tiniest moves.

Although stealing someone's work is a crime, she always thought that as long as she takes the work and claims it first then she is the winner. Of course, it doesn't work that way and the road to her wishful thoughts of gaining popularity was about to come true. Except, not the type of popularity she would enjoy. 

Everyone's eyes were sharp and scanning every inch of her body as Professor Luo Xia handed the portfolio back to his assistant. "I think everyone would love to know how I got my hands on her art portfolio. Not only were these designs on her self promoted webpage, she used these designs to pass the admissions exam for Paris Institute. I first noticed the odd initials on these designs after zooming in and out of them for so many times."

"For those of you who don't recognize me, I am a professor at the art institute. Plagiarism is a very serious breach of academic integrity and a shame to every field in every career. At first, I was eager to see her designs from projects as she held one of the most impressive admission art design [portfolios. My suspicions grew as she failed to perform any talents during the basic introductory courses. Her drawings and sketches were atrocious nonsense."

"Oh, my apologies for forgetting the most important point. Her fashion sense was close to nonexistent because of her awful choices. Definitely, those designs were not her own creation and that made me look into her admission files carefully. To be fair, I reviewed and observed her works after admissions for a few months and compared it to the portfolio that she used for admission. Totally a different feel to the designs."

"I caught her redhanded during a contest that we held to celebrate the institute's anniversary and she was banned from all design schools after we found out that she actually did extensive plagiarism using pieces of famous works. Of course, she was also expelled from the institute. Anyways, now that her art portfolio is confirmed to be another fake, I announce that Yin, Karen will not be able to step foot into any design careers ever again."

Reporters took pictures and wrote down these strong lines for the next headline. Professor Luo Xia continued, "I almost forgot to mention that Miss. Susu could feel free to sue for copyrights and plagiarism for monetary purposes. Obviously there are many more to what miss. Karen had done, but that would be solely up to Miss. Susu to decide."

Susu faced the audience and looked at Professor Luo Xia, "Thank you very much for clarifying everything and even helped me point out this copycat in public. I would definitely pursue legal actions against Miss. Karen. Although we are stepsisters, she has done many disgusting things in the past. At least for this one, I can hold it against her and publicize it."

"My pleasure. Now, let's get back to announcing the winners for the contest. First place goes to Yin, Susu. As for the second and third place, we will have to discuss further to give out the names. Congratulations and let's all give a round of applause to Miss. Susu's amazing work!" The crowd followed Professor Luo Xia's lead and cheered for Susu's wonderful presentation. Everyone thought that her designs would definitely be worth more in value than the prize of this event. 

After the event ended and contestants had left, Susu waited for Professor Luo Xia by the entrance of the event hall. 

"Professor Luo Xia, please give me a few minutes of your time." Her sweet, gentle voice made him stop in his steps. He turned around, hiding a hint of sadness and showed her a smile.

"Yes?" he answered.

"I want to thank you once again for clearing my name and helping me gain justice. I really appreciate it." She thanked him once again because she thought that thanking someone should be done privately in terms of manners.

"No biggie. I would've done it for anyone else if I caught such a huge rat snooping around and thinking about being a big shot by copying somebody's work.  If that's all..." his words were then cut off by hers.

"I really want to know how you found me." she bit her lips and spat out the first question that she could think of. Her mind was in a small mess where she couldn't really figure out how he managed to trace from just the initials of the artwork to her. 

"What do you mean?"

"My initials are common out there. It could mean a lot of things, and the designer may not be me. How come you were so sure that the rose stamp belonged to me and that I had another method of proving myself? How come you were so confident in my designs? how come-"

This time, he cut her off. "I'm sure you have a lot of questions, but all I can tell you for now is that I have confidence in you and your talents. I've seen your work before, and it is rare for someone to be as talented as you. Besides, it runs in your blood..." His voice trailed off, and she missed the last few words that he said.

"I'm sorry, but could you repeat the last few words that you just said?" She blinked and had more question ready for him.

He shook his head and smiled, "nothing. I was just mumbling to myself. I said with such great talent; it is difficult for anyone to imitate your work. I recognized your unique style and am extremely proud to see your unlimited potential in the future. I have an appointment to attend to, so I will meet you perhaps next time."

Susu held her tongue and nodded, "alright. Then next time you must answer my questions. I still have a lot of inquiries about design that I need your opinion and guidance. 

After they separated, Professor Luo Xia met up with Zhi Hei in the parking lot where Zhi Hei brought out an envelope and handed it to him. "Thank you," Professor Luo xia took the envelope and carefully opened it after getting into the car. It was the rosebud stamp that Susu had folded during the event.

His eyes turned slightly watery when he pulled the initials that acted like the stem carefully and watched the rose blossom and close. "She's definitely your daughter...Zi Lan. She's just like you."

Zhi Hei looked at him and asked, "Why did you want me to collect the stamp design for you? I don't think you need it for any academic works."

"I have my reasons." Professor Luo Xia put the rosebud back in the envelope and continued the conversation with Zhi Hei about his upcoming plans.

A game of "Let's Switch" changed the fate of three youths.

Tian Yuo (Age 6): "Nobody will notice, especially her! I don't want to play with her."

Chen Mu frowned from his behavior, "But she is your future fiance. You're meeting her for the first time anyways."

Tian Yuo: "Come on, let's switch for the day. Sometimes even our mothers can't figure us out because we swapped our clothes and accessories! Please...I'm going to tell my mom that I don't want to marry her anyways."

Chen Mu: "I still don't think it's a good idea.."

Tian Yuo: "Didn't you hate hanging out with Chu Yao? I'll help you avoid her for this whole school semester if you switch with me."

Chen Mu sighed, "Fine. Only this time."

Tian Yuo: "I don't want to marry Yin Susu. I don't love her, and she will never be my bride."

He shouted out loud in front of his parents, Yin Zin Leung (Susu's father), and Karen (Susu's step sister). Before leaving the room, he grabbed Karen's hand and looked back with a sharp glare towards Susu, "I will only have one wife and she's Karen."

Karen handed Susu a glass of wine, "Sis, please forgive me. Bro Yuo and I really love each other. I'll drink this glass of wine as an apology. It's my engagement night, so I hope you could give us your blessing."

Susu felt tightness in her chest as she chugged the glass of wine in her hands down her throat. She didn't notice the smirk on Karen's face while she was swallowing the wine. 

Feeling ill, Susu went upstairs to escape the loudness that gave her a headache. She leaned against the wall and sloppily entered a guest room. Once entered, she stripped naked from feeling the heat in the room.

The next morning, she woke up to find Tian Yuo sleeping naked next to her. Her face turned pale as she felt cramps on her lower abdomen when she moved. A noticeable blood stain was on the bed...

'Did..w..what happened..?'

The guest room door swung open and Karen shockingly stood by the door. Her loud gasp and unsettled tone rung Susu and Tian Yuo's ears, "Sis! Bro Yuo!! How could you two do this to me?"

Tian Yuo immediately sat up and caught a glimpse of what had happened. Quickly he refuted any accusations that were thrown at him, "It's not like that! I didn't! Karen, it was her! She drugged me! I drank the wine that was from her and then I woke up just now!!"

He angrily looked to his left and growled, "Yin Susu! I never thought you'd go this far!!!"

Susu cried, "It's not me!!! It's Karen!!!"

Karen's tears were similar to a nonstop flood, "Sis, you're too much!!! How could you!!!"

Tian Yuo coldly scowled at Susu on their wedding night, "We may be married, but I would never touch you. You'll live with an emptied title. You'll never get the love you wish to get from me. Understand?"

Chen Mu spotted Tian Yuo at a bar after paying Susu a visit. He ran towards the handsome man who was flirting with a group of girls, "You bastard! If you never loved her, why marry her in the first place?!"

"To torture her."

"If you don't know how to care for your own wife, then I won't hold back! I won't let anyone hurt her. Not even if you are my closest friend."

A fiber of connection from miles away...



Our places on this earth are divided by oceans setting us apart from one continent to another. Several countries speaking several languages to understand each other. People with several cultures and beliefs. Different personalities and opinions.

In this chaotic world, we live in called real life we search for a place to escape from that reality. To be accepted as who or what we are. We have found that in the music we sing. In the books, we read. In the movies we watch. In the places, we travel and visit. Everywhere in which we get inspiration to face reality head-on.

We write stories or poems to inspire others, reading the words we weave from our own world. For some of us, it is simply an escape from reality into a world in which we can use our imaginations to dream make-believe or to live our secret fantasies or just plain be creative.

Getting on the web gives us more ways to share and get connected to other people with the same kind of thinking from across the ocean. Some of the people we meet along the way give us reasons to smile again. It's where we become friends, get to know them well, and get so close that we even trust them enough to share our own greatest fears.

I was a living a kind of living death when I found solace here on Stories Space. A place to write, camouflaging my hatred and sadness from myself when I was reading all the poetry and fictional fantasies created by the writers. I found another escape from reality and indulged in reading.

My feelings from my own troubles in life had made me feel so empty that only through laughter and reading could I be free and somewhat whole again.

I made my own heaven in purgatory.

A friend told me to write down all of my pains and troubles in poems or stories. Another friend of mine told me to be fierce in my poetry writing. I found friends who helped me give my own life a reason to continue living again through writing.

Writing makes me calm every time my mind gets into a panic mode. The pains and the fears of the unknown are my muses for writing.

When I met someone who understood me and made me feel needed and loved my poetry changed its tune. It made me think of happy thoughts. I got inspired by the things I saw and the happy memories of my childhood that I could write about.

Painful memories and realities were always there and so I wrote about them from time to time.

When that someone left me I continued writing. The same inner muse I had gained I used to keep on writing.

Then, out of nowhere, I got to know you. I became happy again. This time I got even more inspired and more creative, experimenting with my writings.

I set aside my shyness and reservations to write creatively. I still can't overcome some of my shyness and reservation but I am blooming, inspired by you.

You became my muse.

The man in the moon. The stars in my darkest hours. When at night I can't sleep thinking of you calms me to sleep.

The sunshine after the heavy storm. Where all the dead trees come to life again. That keeps me warm when everything gets chilly.

My own little heaven in my real life purgatory.

"Ryu,we are just going to register our marriage today.Why all these preparations?",Alicia asked Ru in a whispering tone.

"You deserve an extravagant wedding.And I wanted you to know that you would get that soon."

Next,they chose matching wedding bands.They were simple in design but with engraving on the side.Each ring had the name of the other written in the insede in a stylized font and the date that they met.

Ryu,knew it was cheesy of him and not very   creative but he wanted to keep it simple just like their relationship.

Alicia loved the rings and couldn't believe that he was doing so much for her.Everytime he did these little things for her the ice around her heart would melt a bit.Ryu Long was confusing her.One minute he would be careless and not consider her feelings and the other minute he would leave her shocked with his thoughtfulness.

Once the bands were finalized,the group of people sitting finally came forward and introduced themselves.

"Good morning madam.I am Ms Kim.Mr Long has hired me to be your stylist for the wedding.I must compliment you on your choice.You will look even more beautiful in that dress.This is my card.If you have any preferances,please do let me know and I will be availabe.Thank you."With this she bowed and the other person moved ahead.

"Hello Madam.My name is Mr Adams.I am to be your wedding photographer.I have left my portfolio here for you to see.Whatever you like,we can customise.I don't think there is a style that will not suit madam and Sir."

"Good morning madam.My name is Ms Lee and I would like to be the caterer for your wedding.I have also prepared the breakfast for you just now.Would you allow me to serve you?Mr Long said you would prefer simple fare for breakfast and decided the menu himself so I have only prepared some porridge,korean pancakes,tofu pudding,steamed buns and fruit.They have been set on the kitchen table.Please enjoy."

With this said,everybody left the living room with only her and Ryu in the room.Alicia quietly turned towards the kitchen without a comment.

She was overwhelmed.After that disastrous marriage she had not even dared to hope for a decent relationship.She was in no way prepared for this pampering she was receiving from him.Her eyes were wet and she did not want to cry and look pathetic.

Ryu sensed the sudden change in mood and was wondering if he had hurt her in some way.He had seen the shine of tears in her eyes.He followed her to the kitchen and was amazed to find that her mood had changed again.A moment before,she had looked on the verge of crying and now she was happily staring at the table full of food.

With a wide grin that stretched from ear to ear,she took out the plates and set them up.
"Hubby,you are the best...such delicious food.I don't mind waking up to such awesome food.My hubby is the best!"
The easy and sing song way she called him 'hubby' brought a loony smile to his face as he joined her for breakfast.The soon to be husband and wife enjoyed their meal in relative peace.
Ryu after finishing his meal,went to where Alicia was sitting amd being a glutton,bemt down and pecked her on the lips."Missus,be ready in an hour.We'll register our marriage first and then have a triple celebration."

Neil took a deep breath and said "Al..I need a favor.."

"I think you meant to say tycoon.." Neil asked her in a similar way.

"Noo..I meant typhoon..you heard me right..

After hearing from Mr. Lazaro that we were to leave in four hours, I immediately left the port and ran down the muddy streets to the town. I live a few kilometers from the port and I knew I made record time when I reached my house in under thirty minutes. Like a madman, I threw open the door to the surprise of my wife who was still cooking breakfast.

"You startled me, Toto! What is it?" asked my wife as I kissed her cheek and ran towards the dresser.

"I have great news, Rosa." I said and told her briefly what happened in the last few hours as I hastily grabbed a bag and started snatching a few shirts still hanging to dry. I was still breathless, but managed to pack the bag with clothes. "We leave in a few hours so I need to hurry," I said before closing the bag and bringing it to the door.

"Wait! Shouldn't you have your breakfast first?" asked Rosa. "There's still time."

I dropped the bag at the door and sat at the table where Rosa had already served a plateful of rice, dried fish and eggs. I sat down and devoured everything like a ravenous dog. Rosa just watched me and poured me coffee as I finished.

"So this means you'll be missing our little girl's birthday," she said.

It was in my mind when I was considering Mr. Lazaro's offer and merely nodded to Rosa. "You will have to celebrate without me. Make sure that she gets that doll she's been asking for."

I had finished eating and stood up. I went to our small bedroom where my daughter slept in her small bed. She was still sleeping peacefully with a blanket brought to her chin. I watched her for a few moments before bending down and planting a kiss on her forehead. She moved a little, but remained sleeping. I rose slowly and went back to the outer room where I found Rosa standing at the door.

"Be careful out there," she said and came to me for a tight embrace.

"Of course, I will," I told her as I kissed the top of her head. She looked up and I saw her bright eyes. It would be days before I could look at those eyes again. "See you in a week," I managed to say before kissing her again. She kissed me back and then, I picked up my bag and ran out the door. I did not look back and ran without stopping until I reached the port.

Surprisingly, the mist had started to dissipate and I went to the boat that would be carrying me in the next several days. The boat was a white yacht that seemed to glow in the diffuse light. On her side, painted in green letters was her name – Ceres. 

I climbed aboard and was welcomed by the first officer, Bert. He was wearing a hat and a short-sleeved shirt. "Welcome aboard, amigo!" he said ushering me in. "Get to know your boat and know her really well. Take care of her and she will take care of you."

A lovely lady approached me holding a tray with a bottle of wine and glasses. Her hair was held up in a tight bun and she was wearing a short skirt that revealed her nicely shaped legs. She smiled, noticing me looking at her calves. "You must be Toto. Come with me and join Mr. Lazaro. My name's Emma, by the way." She was able to get a hand up to shake mine while holding the tray.

"Excuse me." I heard a voice from behind me and saw a young man carrying a portfolio under his arm. 

"This is Lito," said Emma, letting him through. "He's the deckhand. Very busy boy." Lito did not respond nor bothered to look, but walked briskly ahead of us.

"Toto! Nice to have you back. Your foreman was not lying when he said you were punctual and dependable," said Mr. Lazaro after raising his left wrist to look at his watch. He was seated at the saloon and was just given the portfolio by Lito who was already walking away. Seated next to Mr. Lazaro was Joseph who was busily writing on a notebook, his glasses still sliding down his nose.

"Happy to get here on time, Mr. Lazaro," I said.

"Have you met the rest of the crew?" asked Mr. Lazaro. "I see you've met Emma already.

"I've also met Bert and Lito." I replied.

"You'll meet the others soon enough," said Mr. Lazaro. "And you'll have plenty of time to get to know them better. Bumping into them repeatedly the next several days may even make you tired of seeing them." Mr. Lazaro laughed, tilting his head backwards on the settee as he placed his legs on top of the table in front of him and stretched his right arm against the seat's backrest. 

"I was quite relieved that you agreed to this at such short notice, Toto," Mr. Lazaro said as he brought out a pack of cigarettes and offering it to me. I respectfully declined. "You don't smoke? Such a rarity given all the seafaring men that I've met." Mr. Lazaro turned to Joseph who merely pushed his glasses up before getting a file from the portfolio.

"How about a glass of wine," said Mr. Lazaro after sipping his own wine. 

I shook my head. "I haven't touched alcohol in the past three years, Mr. Lazaro."

"Wow! You are indeed a rarity, Toto," said Mr. Lazaro, his eyes widening. "But I respect your decision." He then pulled out a cigarette which Joseph was quick to light up.

"Thanks, Joseph," said Mr. Lazaro, puffing out smoke. Then, he turned back to me. "As I was saying, Toto. I was quite relieved that you agreed, given the short notice. You see, as of this morning, I already had a guide.  Then, for some silly reason, he backed out."

Another puff of smoke and then Mr. Lazaro looked at me in the eye. "And that's why I was desperate to find a dependable man, a trustworthy man who will guide me through the islands."

Mr. Lazaro took his glass and emptied its contents in several gulps. I was surprised that he was drinking that much so early in the day. He then turned to Joseph and said, "Very well. Would you brief Toto on what he shall be doing the next several days? I see you have all your notes ready."

"I think I'd better get my stuff in order first, Mr. Lazaro." I said politely.

Mr. Lazaro looked at the bag that I was carrying and said, "I forgot. You haven't slept a wink since your shift at the port. I'm sorry." He apologized. He sat upright and placed the empty wine glass on the table. Then, he turned to Emma who was still standing nearby. "Emma, please bring Toto to his sleeping quarters and make sure he has everything he needs."

"Sure, Sir," Emma said as she led me from the deck to my sleeping quarters.

As we walked, I was thinking how lucky I was that their guide backed out at the last minute. It was much later that I would realize that crossing paths with Mr. Lazaro would be the start of a series of events that I would consider the worst in my life.
