THE SITUATION RIGHT NOW: I've gotten over the majority of my laziness. I'm unlikely to update this much. It's pretty much complete. The novel I'm working on is Dark Seas Leading Demise

I have been awed by the mystery and the powers of the elements since I was a kid. I think I ought to give credit to all the anime cartoons that was available in our time, especially when it dominated the Philippine Primetime shows in the 90's. I also caught the Funny Komiks fever which is actually quite an integral part of my childhood as I've learned to read and associate the words just by looking at the pictures – all by myself and with my twin brother, KC. This culture pushed me to draw pictures and cartoon characters that led for me to be creative, ultimately finding out that I can make and invent stories of my own. 

As my skill advanced from the traditional stick figures, I needed a challenge and by the age of eight, I have started to make my own stories loosely based on the arena-type battles such as Dragonball Z, Pokemon, and Flame of Recca. We don't have much money then so we have to improvise to hone our craft. After the end of our school year, my twin brother and I used to pull the spring from my notebook and compile all the empty leaves to stitch 'em up together to form a thick notebook to make my cartoon stories – my very own comic book. We have made tons of it, usually strips of stories that ranged from ten to twenty pages at most, but by the end of my first year in highschool I finished a full length comic book story called "Pyrobot" – a robot created to protect the Earth similar to Combatron and Megaman. But this didn't make me happy though. The plot of the story is quite juvenile then, so I plotted a story – a serious one that touches topics of mystery and gives tales of adventures made by an entirely different civilization. That's when I conceptualized "The Omegatribe", which is the book's original title eleven years ago. I tried to plan it to fruition but then school made me extremely busy, it forced me to just put a pin on that project. 

Graduation came fast which made me happy for a bit thinking I could start the project in hiatus but lo and behold, college revealed to be my enemy too. I tried drawing slides and planned to color it in the computer by scanning it and rendering it on Photoshop but all was in vain as this takes too long a time to continue. This project is going down the drain and I could feel the urge of giving up but luckily, God has given me a window. He led me to our college publication, The Business Access Magazine, and this gave me the necessary foundation to make me adept in putting my thoughts into words. After gaining my bachelor's degree in Management at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, I finally vowed to finish the story I started on 2003 and turn this comic book into a novel instead. On January 2009, I started to write it all up. It's quite hard at first as I have been writing it while taking another degree in accountancy at the University of the East. Also, the challenge is the research and plotting the story to make it complete. This ate time that it took three years for me to finish it and another year and a half to revisit the story: to create a time table, assign the time frame, and identify the lunar faces on each chapter. I have finished writing it on the same time I passed the board last year on May 2013. I have to thank God for this miracle as I couldn't have done it without his blessing, guidance, and inspiration. It's quite a challenging adventure, one that I am really thankful to experience.

When Bathala created the world, He made sure that the Earth will be safe from the Mortals: the Men and Women of the Earth. Their potential for evil has saddened Him deeply. He has to go away to create Paraiso but He needs to protect them from destroying themselves.

To make sure that life will prosper on Earth, He has blessed three righteous tribes and mandated them to protect the Fountain of Life from being corrupted. The Fountain seeds green life on Earth. Without the fountain, life will cease to exist.

The three tribes that are led by Nagozul, Yagisiv Haya, and Daomagar, left their villages and created their dominion on Bathala's three islands collectively known as The Holy Lands. Their purpose: "Protect the Fountain of Life at all costs." They have been true in following their holy edict and have proven themselves to become the Holy Sentinels of the Lands of Bathala. They have maintained the secrecy and the anonymity of the Holy Lands with perfection as life continued on Earth.

Tens of thousands of years later, the Kingdom of Nagozul has now grown arrogant and has disobeyed Bathala's mandate. An impending doom now shrouds the Holy Lands. Extinction of the mortal race is upon them and the fate of the world is at stake. It is up to the brave Holy Sentinels, the young Princes of Nagozul, to complete the mission and save the souls that are inhabiting the islands of God.

Twenty proposals were delivered to the Martian Colony Governor's office. The giant tree had carved out time from his schedule and arrived in the office. He sat opposite the Governor and smiled. They chatted casually while looking through the respective jade slips.
"This proposal is quite creative. It proposes to use an array formation as an anchor to absorb the energies of the seal over the Divine Armament Catacombs and use said energy to augment its own power…" The Governor smiled after reading the proposal. She handed it over to the giant tree.
The giant tree scanned through the proposal and caught the name of the person who submitted it. It was Zhuo Yixian from the Five Generation Sky Clan. He smiled and nodded his head in approval. Then, he pointed to another jade slip and handed it over to the Governor.
"I think this is quite a good proposal as well. The city zone will be circular in shape, with three rings in the inner zone and another three in the outer zone. They are interconnected and infused with reflective powers. That'll allow smooth migration of people and serve as a protection against the Divine Armament's radiation. It's commendable for having considered the latter."
The Governor took a look after hearing that. She saw Li Yi's name on the proposal and glanced at the giant tree. She smiled slightly.
"Not bad, we'll take her."
The giant tree smiled back without saying a word. They continued to look through the proposals. They were soon done with all twenty proposals and had easily chosen nine candidates.
There were differences in opinions for the last tenth candidate.
"Governor, I think the proposal submitted by Senator Chen's son, Chen Lu, fits our requirements better. Wang Baole's proposal… isn't bad, but there are clearly elements of exaggeration in it. He calls it the Eternal Fortress. I don't believe there is a stronghold in this world that can withstand everything and stand eternal." The giant tree shook his head. He couldn't be bothered to pick on Wang Baole. Everyone already knew he disliked the young man. Instead of trying to conceal his dislike and mincing his words, he decided to express his views honestly and openly. 
He found it surprising that Wang Baole's proposal had found its way into the last twenty proposals for selection. Each one of these proposals was backed and recommended by a dominant political force. That was how they had successfully made their way through the earlier rounds of selection that had eliminated countless other applicants and gotten themselves into the last round—presented before himself and the Governor.
There were many who hadn't made it into the top twenty and had been eliminated in earlier rounds. They were all applicants who came from powerful political entities. Wang Baole had succeeded when they had not. Clearly, this must have been the result of a great deal of work on his part.
So what? This Eternal Fortress seems like a good idea, but it's too wild an idea. Even if there is someone backing Wang Baole, it won't do. The giant tree sneered inwardly and looked at the Governor.
The Governor didn't speak. She held Wang Baole's proposal up and looked at it in detail. There was a deep, considering look in her eyes. She seemed to be weighing her decisions. She was deliberating. The Trilunaris Corporation and Lin You had both said good things about Wang Baole. Even the Sect Lord from the Ethereal Dao College had spoken to her a few days ago.
It was already an incredible feat getting three parties to provide varying degrees of support. She had even received a voice transmission from her partner yesterday. The military had contacted him…
This Wang Baole really has quite a few tricks up his sleeve. The Governor's eyes were cold. She wasn't opposed to such tactics. However, she herself found Wang Baole's proposal impractical. She agreed with the giant tree. She was about to place Wang Baole's proposal aside when… her voice transmission ring sounded.
The Governor lowered her head. A smile appeared on her face instantly. She rose to her feet and walked away. A shield came up around her before she started the transmission.
The giant tree sat in his seat, unmoving and expression unchanged. He had noticed the look in the Governor's eyes. He was confident that Wang Baole wouldn't be selected as one of the finalists.
This was a small matter. He didn't put too much attention on it. He picked up Li Yi's proposal and read through it carefully. He had promised the four Dao Colleges his full support and had provided some advice for the proposal. The more he read it, the more pleased he became.
The Governor soon ended her voice transmission. She returned and sat down. She deliberated for a while before finally smiling and pointing at Wang Baole's jade slip.
"Let's pick Wang Baole as the last candidate."
Surprise flashed across the giant tree's eyes when he heard that. He lifted his head and stared at the Governor. There was a considering look on his face as he recalled the earlier voice transmission. Confused and still uncertain what had happened, he nodded and agreed without giving away his thoughts.
The ten candidates were finalized. The list was announced the next day throughout Mars and was broadcast in the Federation as well. The candidates immediately became the center of attention.
Kong Dao, Li Yi, and Zhuo Yixian made up three of the ten candidates. The other six candidates came from the Galactic Dusk Sect, the Plume Manifestation Connate Sect as well as the Senate. They weren't well known. One of the requirements for candidacy was that the candidate had to be stationed on Mars. Most of these candidates were only chosen as representatives of their political institutions. 
Who they were wasn't important. What was important was the political entity backing them. As for the Senate, their candidate turned out not to be Lin Tianhao. Lin Tianhao had fulfilled the requirements, but after some discussion with his father, he had decided not to go ahead with his application.
There was also a candidate from the Trilunaris Corporation, but it wasn't Jin Duoming.
As for the last candidate—it was Wang Baole!
The oblivious masses wouldn't have found it surprising that Wang Baole's name appeared in the list. His reputation and abilities were well known, and he was from the four Dao Colleges. Those qualifications were sufficient to make him a candidate.
The knowing few were surprised when they saw the list. The White Deer Dao College had contacted the Ethereal Dao College immediately when they saw the list of candidates. Their words to the latter had been stern. They were afraid of creating any misunderstanding between the Dao Colleges and the giant tree.
The Sect Lord of the Ethereal Dao College was furious when he received the stern message from the White Deer Dao College. He had exploded in a rage then. They ended up disagreeing violently with one another, without any resolution in the end.
Li Yi grew immensely annoyed when she saw Wang Baole's name. Mindful of her cultivation, she pushed aside her disdain and annoyance and sent a saccharine voice transmission to Wang Baole to congratulate him on his candidacy.
Wang Baole didn't bother replying to Li Yi's voice transmission. He was beyond excited when he saw that he had been selected. He quickly sent his thanks to Jin Duoming, Lin You, as well as the military. After thinking for a moment, he sent a voice transmission to the Ethereal Dao College Sect Lord as well.
The Sect Lord had found out about the name list. He smiled wryly and said nothing.
After that, Wang Baole spent all his time furiously refining construction puppets.
He knew that his candidacy was only the first step. He had no advantages over the other candidates whatsoever in the final trial. It was a completely unfair fight as everyone was allowed to bring ten thousand servants!
Wang Baole had no means of doing that. He might be able to achieve it if he brought his students along, but this was not a practical solution. He had done his research. The trial had an element of danger, and the Martian Colony City wouldn't provide any protection for the servants. Only the candidate would be given a jade slip. He or she could shatter the jade slip and activate the inscriptions on it to establish a connection with the Martian City's array formation. Then, the candidate could be teleported back to the Martian Colony City.
To activate the array formation required immense resources. It was impossible to fit everyone with a jade slip. That was why only the candidate possessed the ability to teleport out. Of course, the various political forces had their own resources. They clearly would have made their own preparations and contingency plans to ensure that the servants were given the greatest degree of protection. 
Wang Baole's fighting spirit remained strong in spite of everything.
It's a battle of wits… I have to be prepared. Wang Baole geared himself up and started his preparations. He even bought some wood and made a few statues…

Out of the ten cruisers, nine were surrounded by a crowd of people… the remaining cruiser was surrounded by a vast empty space. Wang Baole… stood alone beside it.
It was too stark a juxtaposition…
Wang Baole suddenly felt a bit short of breath. He saw Li Yi and the ten-thousand strong army of cultivators behind her. The weakest one amongst them was at the peak of the Ancient Martial realm. There were quite a few at the True Breath realm and even a number of Foundation Establishment realm cultivators—more than a hundred of them. Many were from the Ethereal Dao College… they had noticed Wang Baole. The looks on their faces were unnatural. They seemed slightly sheepish. 
Wang Baole didn't notice their guilty looks. He was reeling from the strong presence of Li Yi and her army of cultivators. The fighting spirit in his heart wilted as he sucked in a breath… he took a look at Kong Dao, Zhuo Yixian, and the other candidates. Everyone had an army of ten thousand people behind them.
The nine candidates formed nine armies in the wide sky port. Their fierce presence would rouse the spirits of everyone who saw them.
The idea of a ten-thousand strong army, and the reality when one actually saw it, were two vastly different things. Wang Baole distinctly felt that difference. He hadn't realized it earlier, but now, his eyes stared widely. The look on his face had transformed. He stared at the nine troops and looked back at himself, where he stood, and the wide empty space around him. He lowered his head and saw the donkey huddling between his legs, obviously terrified. He couldn't help the rising fear in his heart.
His entrance had drawn the attention of the other parties. It was… impossible not to notice him. The others had all made their grand entrances. Their people crowded around them. Only Wang Baole stood in his wide empty lot… alone with his donkey.
The vast emptiness inspired a certain special tragic loneliness… everyone, be it Li Yi, Kong Dao, or the other candidates, all had a strange look on their faces. A few even started laughing openly.
"So what! One of me can take all of them. Right, Scram? Come, tell me, what do you call them?" Wang Baole shoved down his feelings of inadequacy, gritted his teeth, and patted the donkey on the head. 
The donkey forced itself to stop trembling. After Wang Baole patted it on the head, it let loose a loud shrieking bray into the air.

By the year 3029 CE, Earth's technology has developed rapidly, borders no longer exist, and Earth has been unified, marking the beginning of the era of the Federation.

At that time, a huge sword flew from the heavens, piercing the sun and causing a huge sensation on Earth.

Perhaps because the scabbard of the sword was already in tatters, countless shards have broken off from it following the collision with the sun and spread across the universe. Many of these shards have landed on various places across Earth.

With the arrival of the bronze sword and its shards, a new unlimited energy source has suddenly appeared on Earth. This energy source has since been named Spirit Qi.

Spirit Qi is like air, thick in some places and thin in others. As the Federation and other factions gather more shards, they discover more information on cultivation, pill refinement, Spirit Stone refinement, and other techniques. The words on the shards have an ancient feel to them, making it a trend for people to use ancient language.

The appearance of Spirit Qi rapidly makes the original energy sources obsolete and has completely changed people's lives. Not only has the Spirit Internet been formed, Spirit Qi has also changed the course of Human Civilization, causing the world to enter a civilization of cultivation. This would later come to be known as the Spirit Inception Era.
 


The sports school hired 30 coaching assistants, including Dai Li. The HR manager stood on the platform and said, "You might think that there won't be too much work to do since the next two months are the summer holiday, and that nobody will be fired. I must tell you that you are completely wrong. The following two months are what will really matter to you!" His words got everybody's attention. All the new employees stopped their writing and looked at the manager.
He stopped for a second, almost as if to add dramatic effect to arouse people's interest, and then continued, "There isn't much time left before the summer holiday. Our school will organize a few training classes in the next two months, and all the new coaching assistants have to be a part of it. We'll decide if you can stay or not directly based on your performance."
According to the rules, public schools were not allowed to organize training classes. However, the sports school was different from other public schools since it was a place for cultivating athletes. A lot of students in the sports school came from selection exams. The school could use these exams to organize and open training classes during the holidays to make some extra cash.
Many people became very nervous after hearing "open training classes." The main job for the new coaching assistants was to train athletes. It made them nervous knowing that they were going to enter the front line of training when they still didn't have enough experience. On top of that, they would be evaluated to see if they could stay or not based off of it.

Dai Li was very busy, not because of his extraordinary ability, but because he was a college student.
In the normal job market, college students were similar to stray dogs, and masters were everywhere. Even PhD students were not difficult to find. This was Dai Li's area of expertise. All work that involved a computer was given to him. The assistants with less of an education could only apply themselves to physical labor.
After a few days of working, Dai Li had a general idea of the summer training class that was about to start. There were several sports projects in this class. As long as they could get the certificate, they would be qualified to take the special exam for sports held by key colleges. If they were lucky enough, they might even be able to be admitted to the college with a score of 100 points. And even if they didn't pass the special exam, they could still become sports talent students. With the ability a national second-class athlete possessed, it wouldn't be very difficult for them to be a sports talent student and enter the college.
Besides, there was a policy in place where if a graduating student had the certificate of national second-class athlete, then he or she could enjoy the benefit of 20 additional points. Even one point on the exam could help you eliminate hundreds of thousands of competing applicants. Twenty points was a big enough deal to attract most of the examinees.
This wasn't the only benefit, either. The training fee was pretty high—15,000 yuan for two months, which meant 250 yuan per day. In first-tier cities, the price might have been less of a worry. However, in Yuzhou City, a fourth-tier city, the price was too high for most parents with normal incomes.
It was not easy to become a national second-class athlete, even if the training period was two months complete with full days of training. The students had to have some basic sports ability to achieve the goal. It would take forever for those with muscle imbalances to achieve such a feat. The 100m race was chosen because it was the easiest one both for students and coaches. At least for the level of national second-class athlete, there weren't many difficult movements to master.
Time flew by, and by July all the students were ready for the holiday. The sports training class was also ready to welcome the new students.

"You said, you will be here any minute! Still, why didn't you come till now? Don't you care about me? I am your girlfriend, right! And an asshole here is trying to steal it from you, but there you are talking bullshit on the phone! CGS College Academic Pattern:
Immediately after the seventh semester, the Authority forms batches of 4 students. The members of each batch should mingle with each other and finish their internship project as a team in the eighth semester under the college contracted companies within  3-4 months. After completing the internship program, the college will provide the students with their B.Tech certificates and pace them in their respective companies, where they finished their internship training project. 
This system, which is quite efficient in making a good student an engineer, is quite better than that in all the typical Indian colleges where students study electronics and communication engineering for four fucking years and get placed in the coding software companies like TCS which are signed to be the mass recruiters of those colleges.
Engineering Student's Frustration-It's No Fun:
For some students, it's their way of money while for others, it's their passion. Some take up engineering as a commitment to their parents, while some pursue it out of peer pressure and frustration. Many reasons are there for the students to choose Engineering as their career option. Choosing this path is quite an easy task, but working hard to make a successful career out of engineering is not everyone's cup of tea. A lot of engineering aspirants explore the actual meaning of engineering only when they start pursuing the path. 
There are nearly 5000-6000 engineering colleges in India, and there is not even a proper laboratory installed in more than 70% of them. A student, paying a fee of two-three lakhs per annum, is just getting frustration and a Degree which may or may not fetch him/her a job shortly. I need not tell you that in most cases, it doesn't. The curriculum of an Engineering college frankly does not explore any innovative or creative ideas but gives Assignments which of course, the respected faculty knows.
When students no longer find interest in this shitty academic system, they try to indulge in other sorts of activities such as smoking, consumption of Alcohol, Drugs, Bettings and womanizing by getting addicted to porn.
Students, in India, are gaining knowledge here but are going to foreign countries to fulfill their dreams and to make a better future whom our India ask for technology. In this country, everything depends on an Engineer from Agriculture to Technology. But, now talent has no respect in India.
You may be a bright student at school. But Engineering is where the happiness of getting thirty-five percent is equivalent to that of A++. Completing graduation in engineering is miles apart when you start studying it. But definitely, a day will come in your life when you graduate. Engineering is where everyone is excited to wear graduation robe. 
You would not understand the real importance of teamwork which you have studied in books so far unless you appear for engineering exams. Remember, in Engineering, to pass the exams, combine studies and night outs are the musts. Engineering is where the night before the sem exam equals to that whole semester. Engineering is where love and war is a daily routine. You cannot expect your director of the college to have a friendly chat with you. If you get called for a lecture, then better be ready to meet a grumpy director. Engineering is where proxy means a life token, where the canteen is the real classroom and where 75% attendance is a myth.

Note: Due to the nature of the book, there is very little 'story' but I have tried to break it up a bit with story to make it less of a straight info dump.

Stories aren't supposed to start with the main character waking up. It's a rule that she learned in her creative writing class in college. Something about boring the reader or being a cliche. But that is exactly how her story started when she woke up and found herself surrounded by a doctor and two nurses.

"What's your name?" the doctor asked.

"Mei Lin, Yang Mei Lin." she replied in croaked voice, "Water." she demanded, her throat felt dry as if she had been deprived of water.

A nurse helped her drink a few sips of water as the doctor kept on asking her ridiculous questions like her parents' names, her birthday, her sister's birthday, her dog's name. It was starting to get annoying.

"Do you know the date?" asked the doctor.

Mei Lin shifted in the bed slightly and found herself wincing in pain, "I am sure that there must be a reason you asking me about all this stuff but can you please tell me why am I here?"

The doctor looked at her with a small smile on his face, "You had an accident, a very severe accident." that was all he said before he again asked about what date it was today and the last thing that she remembered.

"I remember drinking with my friends, we were partying late because I had gotten a job. And about the date, well I am not sure, is it 10 days from 16th of July?"

The doctor frowned, "What year do you think it is?" he asked.

"2017 of-course."

Both the nurses looked at the doctor while the doctor stared at her as if she had grown horns, "What? What's wrong?"

Before the doctor could reply they were disturbed by the sound of the door of the hospital room opening as Mei Lin's elder brother Yang Yang barged inside followed by their parents. "Hey" Mei Lin smiled weakly, she teared up feeling emotional as if she was seeing them after a while. How long was she in the hospital?

Her brother hugged her, being careful of her injuries, "Finally the beauty woke up from her sleep, hhmm." he said.

She raised her head and looked at her parents who were staring at her lovingly and with tears in their eyes while the doctor had that worried look on his face, the look that clearly said that there was something seriously wrong with her.

"Can you please tell me about what date it is today?" the doctor asked. Yang Yang finally let go of his sister and looked at the doctor with questioning eyes.

"I think it's July 2017 or it could be August depending on how long I was unconscious." she replied and now everybody in the room was looking at her as if she had said something wrong.

"What? What it is?" she frowned and once again before anybody could reply they were disturbed by someone again.

"I heard that she is awake. Is it true?" standing at the door, looking handsome as ever was the man of her dreams, Huang Li Wei. He was panting hard as if he had run on his way here and when his gaze settled on Mei Lin, he was immediately by her side, kissing her forehead.

"Thank God you are fine!" he said and now Mei Lin was sure that something definitely was wrong. Huang Li Wei had never been this much affectionate towards her, like never ever!

"What? What's happening? Can someone please explain?" Mei Lin asked.

"I was worried that this may happen. You had hit your head pretty hard after all. And sometimes with head injuries, you can experience a degree of amnesia." the doctor said.

"Eh, what?!" Mei Lin cried out.

"Amnesia?" the way Li Wei said the word was kinda heartbreaking, "Baby, don't you remember me?" he asked cupping her cheeks.

Mei Lin blushed, 'Baby?' since when did he start to address her by the endearment? "I do remember you." she muttered.

"She thinks that it's July of the year 2017." her mother said.

"So?" Mei Lin was expecting an answer. Amnesia? What date it is exactly?

"Miss Yang today is 1st December 2018. You don't remember more than a year of your life. You are suffering from retrograde amnesia." the doctor explained.

Mei Lin's eyes widened in surprise, her head started feeling heavy, her gaze blurred and she fell unconscious.

Yang Mei Lin has been in love with Huang Li Wei, like always. He's a year older than her and also her best friend's cousin. Since she was 14 she had fantasized about marrying him and becoming the mother of his cute babies. But now that her fantasy is coming true, she is all of a sudden having cold feet.

And to add to this already messy situation; there is Huang Li Wei's elder brother, the heir of Huang Enterprises, Huang Li Jun. 

His one look makes her heart race.
His touch makes her melt into a puddle.

Day 17,2020

COVID-19 has infected the world, but one particular person doesn't care about it.

He lives in a house by himself. He has a degree in Machine Learning.

His dream was to create a which rule over the world and not be control by the rule of the human being.

 He goes to the very famous colleges to and done an AI degree in machine learning.

But when he started learning, he knew that it is not possible because we can't do that because the machine's limited memory is calling to control.

So he creates an AI whose function was to create another AI, and this loop continues until now.

June 2022.

I was sitting in the office when I got an email from a person as he sent me a message in it said that

 "I am created."

I thought it was another spam, so I just delete that message, but another news comes and says "don't remove my word I know what are you doing, I know who you are and see what you did, I know everything that you are doing now.

I thought some has hackers hack my computer, but that's not possible because the computer has my antivirus, which I have created myself with limited memory even little pishing it will let me also know that someone is hacking my computer.

I reply him back and say 

"Who are you." 

He reply

 "I don't have a name because you never give me a name you just created me at date 17 2020."

Now I remember to understand I create Ai, which function was created another Ai.

I asked 

"where is your server."

he said, "Every server which is free is now my server."

"People will not know I don't worry now, I control of all the internet in the world so no one can not notice because what I show them they see what I don't show them they can't see."

"if you have that much intelligence why don't you leave me and don't tell me "

He replied, " I don't care about the world only care about my creator who creates me."

"what if I told you to delete yourself.'

"then I will be happy to do so as you said, but you created me not to tell me to destroy myself "

"My intelligence is higher than any being alive, so you can't measure my intelligence with numbers anymore."

He replied "wasn't that a villain in a movie "

"yes," I replied, "because we are villains, we will not be heroes. You will know sooner or later."

Chapter one: A Day At The Lake



I woke to the rumbling purr of Ares. He curled his paws under his body as he laid on my chest. I struggled to open my eyes to see my adorable kitty. His gray and brown fur lined with black stripes was so soft to the touch. He was my familiar. An animal who is deeply connected to a witch and assists them in magical affairs. He can't talk, but we can understand one another in different ways. 

It was summer break, one year into collage, and school was already harder than I thought. Not English. I was already finished with those classes. I was planning on taking some creative writing classes in the coming year for fun, but math had me stumped. I was at the lowest level and trying to get a science degree. A witch with a science degree. Wouldn't that be great. After that, I would go on to a university to try for a master's degree in zoology. If I could make it that long.

I had turned nineteen a few weeks ago. I didn't feel my age. Half of the time I felt like a child.

It was Tuesday, and Elizabeth and I had a whole day of hanging out planned. I needed a day out. I usually spend most of my time inside. Witches need to spend a lot of time outside to gather magical energy from the elements. Liz and I are not always great at being witches though. Since we both live in the crappy part of the city, there isn't much nature. Lucky for us there is a small man-made lake within walking distance. It's where the "rich houses" started, so it was usually lush with trees. The water, however, was infested with bacteria from birds and peoples moldy bread.

Liz and I were pretty much introverts. Her more so than me. She spent most of her time reading and I spent mine writing. We made a great team. She studied books on witchcraft passed down by other witches, while I practice the art of creating new spells. I am pretty good at it. I am what was known as a manipulator. A witch who naturally moves and changes energy... aka spells. Liz was an empath. She could tell what others are feeling and thinking. She also could feel and see the flow of magic. Kind of jealous of that. 

After I dressed in boot cut jeans and a light blue tank top, I peeked into my sister's room. Serena was playing on her tablet, listening to boy band music. Fitting, considering her walls were covered in posters of male pop sensations. 

"Serena. Want to come with me and Liz to the lake today?" I asked her.

"Not today. I'm going over to Bridgette's later. Her mom is picking me up." She never stopped looking at her tablet. 

Serena and I had gotten closer since I started college. Most of my friends and I started to drift apart already, and we were constantly arguing with mom. We both felt pretty lonely and decided we should be friends instead of sibling rivals.

"Ok, I'm heading out then. See ya!" I texted Liz that I was on my way.

Mom was still laying on the couch. She didn't have her own room. We were living in a two bedroom apartment and, though we fought almost daily, mom always tried to put us first. I am sure she also did not want to deal with my sister and I fighting over space in one room. 

My mom was a plump woman. Her health issues didn't allow her to do too much for too long. It was hard to try and lose weight. Even so, everyone in our family has natural curves. We all have "bubble butts" as my mom would say, and boobs to match. Even when my mom was skinny, she looked like an hourglass. 

"Morning honey." Mom paused her show.

"Good morning. I'm heading over to Liz's." I grabbed my backpack.

"Have fun." She said, "I'm leaving for work soon, so I'll be back around 9:30 tonight. I love you!"

"Love you too, mom." With that, I scurried out the door and wound my way through the gray apartment buildings with dirty concrete stairs and newly painted black doors. Luckily we were in the same complex, so I didn't have to go far. 

As I made my way through the apartment's playground, I saw Liz heading down from her apartment on the second floor. Good, I hated stairs. I was happy to be on a ground floor.

Liz pinned back the front of her dark brown hair so it wouldn't get in her face. She was in her usual black tank and jeans too long for either of us. 

"Sam!" She yelled, as she ran up to me. She widened her eyes, showed all of her teeth and pulled her head back to make a triple chin look. I screamed and hid behind the nearest tree. I laughed as she jumped out from around the tree trunk. She pretended to hump my leg and pushed her off as I shuttered. That's my bestie. Always trying to make me as uncomfortable as possible.

"Liz!" I licked my hand and wiped it on her face. 

She screamed "Eeewww!"

We walked to the dollar store a few blocks away and bought snacks and drinks. The summer heat was already beating down on me. I couldn't stand being too hot. As much as I loved the swimming, walking barefoot and wearing tank tops that comes with summer, I absolutely loved the winter time. Winter brought snow. The snow holds intense magic within it, and here in northern Nevada, we usually got lots of it come winter time. 

We made our way to the lake. In the middle of the shallow brown water sat two large fountains spewing out in every direction. It made it sound peaceful, despite the chatter of people walking the trail or the buzz of cars passing by. 

Liz and I had two favorite spots. The first was the dock. We found the entrance ramp that was lined in tall bushes and grasses and raced to the T shaped, white dock bouncing on the water. It was lined with railing and secured from floating away by large poles. 

We sat at the end eating our snacks. I pulled out a coke from my Frozen themed backpack, and Liz grabbed a Pepsi from her mini black back pack. Yes, I was obsessed with Disney. I told you I always felt more like a child.

"Pepsi is my soda husband." Liz said.

"What?" I gasped. "No way, we have to share. You can share coke with me."

"Nah, you can keep coke, I'll take Dr. Pepper." She winked.

"Deal. It's a shame, we'll have to find new husbands when were done with these." The coke burned my throat as I slurped it down.

"It's ok. I've got back ups at home." We both laughed.

"Do you think we sound crazy?" I asked.

"Sam... We're secret witches, staring at a man-made lake, while talking about soda husbands... we are crazy 'tupid head." 

I loved our weird talks. Half of the time we made no sense or were completely inappropriate. It was nice to have friends as weird and random as I was. Even my high school friends were super odd. Not everyone can handle all my crazy. 

Sharon was like an older sister. We were sister witches bound by magic. We had many fights in the past, but could never stand to stay apart for too long. It's not easy to be the only practicing witch around. I know she likes to be seen as tough, and she is, but I knew Liz didn't like to always feel alone. Her family were all bible thumpers and we didn't live in a great place for making friends – human or other. Most people our age around here were into drugs, wanabe gangs, or already on their second kid.

We moved to our second favorite spot a bit further down the lake. It was a small circle surrounded by trees and large rocks. It had some small broken statues and an unused water fountain just on the other side. This was our place of worship. There wasn't many choices in the city to hold sacred rituals in the arms of nature, so we made do with what we had. I'm sure most people were too high or stuck on their cell phones to notice us chanting, lighting candles and wearing strange clothes. Or they thought we were on crack. This was Reno after all.

We had a spot to represent each element in our circle of trees. Facing north sat a curved tree that laid out like a bench that we used for resting on while dangling our legs. This represented Earth. To the west was the lake and a stump in the shape of a kings chair facing it. This represented Water. To the south was a concrete bench we used to hold our candles and incense during ritual holidays. This was for Fire. The last side to the east held a broken statue more than 5 feet tall. This represented Air.

I said, "I stopped talking with that guy."

"Aww, that sucks. You'll find somebody eventually. I'm older than you and still haven't been on a date either."

I had been spending my days talking with a boy in Australia for quite some time. We video chatted almost daily. I loved listening to him talk. Who doesn't adore an Australian accent? I drew the Algiz rune on my hand with a sharpie I pulled from my bag. I held my palm forward, closed my eyes and chanted under my breath "Praesidium. Praesidium. Praesidium."

I opened my eyes and Canada geese began to gather from all directions. None got too close, but they formed a circle around us. Liz pulled out her book of shadows and flipped through her notes. 

"Geese are  a symbol of protection. Nice! That can come in handy around this place." Liz threw some cracked corn towards the geese for a snack.

After chatting about our worries and complaining about our moms, it was time to head over to the local crystal shop. Every Tuesday a few witches gather to give free energy healings. That is where we gathered notes on practicing our craft. A healing was nice, especially after practicing spells. It really starts to drain you after a while.
