Chapter 234. The band known as Starlights
The Starlights was a band which consisted of five members, all of them were graduates from Beijing conservatory of music.
In her third year of university, Lily has started this band and Professor Che Shu has helped her a lot, especially in recommending members for the band. 
Just like a girl group, a band consisted of different types of people and it was hard to maintain a good atmosphere among them.
There were many examples of bands splitting after a month or two, but Lily and the other members of the band found a strange synergy between them. 
They were quick to get along with each other and although, there were some differences between them, it was quick to resolve.
'It's a strange group but that's what makes them unique.'
Ren thought in his head as he looked around the faces of the members of Starlights.
First was the guitarist, Zhen Shi, the guitarist was a special position in the band and normally, a guitarist would be the most skilled member of the band.
It was because it was not easy to play the guitar compared to other instruments. 
Many people can play the guitar but to play it at a professional level wasn't easy. It took years of experience and talent.
One may think of a handsome, young guy when one may imagine a guitarist but Zhen Shi wasn't like that at all. 
Ren could see some traces of handsomeness from his face but it was hidden because of his long blonde hair and smoky makeup.
He even has piercings and tattoos on his body. He seemed like a delinquent rather than a guitarist in a band. 
The second member of the band was the keyboardist, Ma Li. 
Ma Li was not an exceptional beauty like Lily but she has her own charm. She looked like the kind of girl who would work in a place like a cafe. 
That was the sort of atmosphere one would get seeing her. It was hard to guess that she was a keyboardist in a band. 
It was because the keyboardist had a flexible role in a band. 
The primary role of a keyboardist in a band is to provide harmonic accompaniment to the melodic components of the song.
To do this, the keyboardist must have an in-depth understanding of the music genre, the appropriate chord qualities to play, the right voicing or inversion, and the harmonic implication of the melody of the song.
Moreover, keyboardists are known to switch between other instruments if the needs arrive. That's why it was known as a flexible role in the band. 
The next member of the band was Fu Tai, the drummer. He can be said to be the most normal looking person in the band. 
With black hair and casual clothes, he gave the feeling of an ordinary person. At first glance, he looked like a university student. 
In a band, the drummer mostly handles the rhythmic area.
The drummer lays the foundations, provides the pulse and brings the groove for the track, letting the rest of the band express themselves creatively.
The beat of the track ties everyone together and the drummer proving themselves as a reliable timekeeper breeds trust amongst other players, ultimately leading to better music.
That was the job of the drummer. It may look easy but it was more than anything because a drummer has to think about the other members more than himself when playing. 
The next was the bassist of the band whose name was Ye Fen. His look was of a nerd with black glasses and well combed hair.
He should not have any connection to a rhythmic instrument like bass but he was the bassist of the band.
The role of the bassist in a band is the sonic link between the rhythmical and melodic elements of any band.
With drums, it provides the backbone. In addition, the traditional function of the bass guitar is to flesh out any bands' sound.
By being played in such a way that the percussive elements of the instrument reinforce and supply power and groove. This can apply to a busy rock or funk drum beat for example. 
The instrument especially brings the thunder to any live performance.
This is specifically highlighted at live music concerts. When amplified and run through a decent sound rig, the very ground can be felt to resonate.
With the lower frequencies sounding upon the lightest touch of any of the four strings of this fascinating instrument.
The next and final member of the band was of course Lily, the main vocals and the songwriter.
The vocals of a band are the face of the band as people will think of her first when they will think about the band. She was also the spokesperson of the band. 
Ren can see that Lily was the centre of the band and she was also the piece that completed the puzzle known as the Starlights. 
'It's like a gathering of different persons who are ordinary alone but they become unique just by coming together.'
That was the conclusion Ren has on the band and he was right too. 
"I still feel surreal sitting in front of Xin Ren. It's like a dream, one that I never saw before!"
Ren came back to reality when he heard that. He looked at the keyboardist, Ma Li who has said that. 
"It's not a dream."
"Yes, you are acting like he's a ghost or something."
Lily said as he stared at her band members and Fu Tai replied to her. 
"But he's a celebrity and a famous one. He was in the number one spot in the real-time search rankings just a few days ago."
Ren suddenly remembered his unintentional fight with heavenly king, Xiao Yunhai. 
He didn't want to think about it much. He was glad that the issue had died down because both Ren and Xiao Yunhai had ignored the matter. 
As there was no way to intensify it, the fight created by the media can only die.
"We will be celebrities too after our next song will release."
"Next song? You completed the song you were writing?"
"Yes, I completed it two days ago and it came out better than expected."
Lily said while swinging around her legs. She was enjoying the accomplishment after writing the song.
"Actually, Lily called me today about how she wanted to play the song in front of me and I agreed. Then, I got your call and thought that it would be a good thing for you to listen to it. Sorry that I didn't tell you about it."
Professor Che Shu said from the side.
"No, it's okay. Then, will you play the song?"
Ren said the last part of the sentence whole looking at Lily and she looked at her band members. 
"So, should we play it?"
The band members looked at each other when they heard that and in the end, they all nodded their heads. 
Ren had come here today to meet Professor Che Shu but being able to listen to a newly created song was like an icing on the cake for him. 


Ren, he was someone with great talent in acting and singing but due to bad luck and some wrong choices, he was only able to become a third rate actor.

After dying in an accident, he noticed that he had returned to the past.

With the help of his talents and the knowledge of future, he started his journey to become the trendiest star of the century.

J is a very special person who got me to try new things and do new stuff. I never would've thought I enjoyed them, but after I tried them, I actually liked them. It's one of those crazy circumstances where you start to notice something because the person you like likes it; in my case, I genuinely began to like video games and anime and stuff like that. He shared a lot of new things with me that I never would've thought of trying.

But there's this game called Xenoblade Chronicles, and J sent me a bunch of links to different parts of the soundtrack that he thought I would like. Sweet of him, right? One in particular stood out to me, called "Where We Used to Be". I loved it because it sounded so bittersweet, and reminded me of how I felt about J. I wanted to be with him, but I didn't want to say anything because I had no clue how he would respond. So I was, and I still am, stuck in this stalemate.

But another reason I really liked this song was because J learned to play it on the piano. And the way our class schedules worked out in senior year was that even days he had band second period while I had home study. I would come into the band room during my home study and sometimes even earlier to listen to him in the jazz band, and in the intermittent times between jazz band and symphonic band and second and fourth period, he would sit down at the piano and play. And after sharing "Where We Used to Be" with me, J started playing it on the piano.

So now try imagining me leaning against the piano in the band room with a bunch of other busy people making noise in the room, watching the guy I liked play the piano. Every time this happened, time just seemed to stand still and everything tuned out. I was truly and utterly focused on listening to J play a song I loved. And silly little me would fantasize that he learned to play it just for me.

Even now as I'm typing this I'm listening to the song and I'm reminded of him. I can't help but close my eyes and transport back to that time when J would play the piano and I would just listen as he played something that I wished was just for me.

Every time I think of you, I think of what was and what could've been. And maybe now we can't become anything, but I want to believe we could be. Because every time I think of you, my heart breaks because I'm reminded we'll never be.
I'm reminded of you, J.

Zelda wrapped her arms around Trent the moment she saw him, leaving Bree laughing. "There he is! The man who inspired the song that has inspired so many! It's lovely to meet you in person!"
"Thank you," Trent said, his face a little pink from the attention. "It's nice to meet you, too. I've heard so many nice things about you."
Zelda looked at Bree and smiled. "That's good to hear. Bree is one of my favorites." She wrapped her arm around Bree and pulled her close. 
 As soon as Zelda let her go, she was back to business. "Come with me," she said, waving her arm and leading Bree and Trent back toward one of the studio rooms. "I've got some folks assembled I'd like for you to meet. We have auditions scheduled for the next few hours. We'll have the prospective candidates come in, play for a few minutes in the studio so we can talk without them hearing, and then we'll arrange call backs for anyone we'd like to hear play together. While it's important that the individual musicians sound good, we need them to sound cohesive as well, as I'm sure you know."
 "Sounds good," Bree noted. "When are call-backs?"
 "Next Monday," Zelda said, she pulled open the studio door and gestured for them to go through ahead of her. 
 Two men and a woman Bree had never met before sat behind the panel. They all stood as they came in, and Zelda stepped up to introduce them. "Bree, Trent, this is Alvin Cook, one of the chief music engineers here at Sonic Music. This is Sally Henderson, executive in charge of new musicians, and Jordan Right, chief sound engineer."
 Bree shook all of their hands and they all exchanged pleasantries as Trent did the same. She was glad Zelda had introduced him because she wasn't sure if she should use the term boyfriend or not, but Zelda just said he was the inspiration for Bree's most famous song.
 Once they were all settled into chairs facing the currently empty sound stage, Jordan said, "I really love the soulfulness of your music. It definitely comes across in your recordings, and it's even better live."
 Bree could feel her face pinking at the compliment. "Thank you," she said, smiling. "I really appreciate that."
 "What are you working on now?" Sally asked.
 "I have several songs that I'm ready to record. Of course, with a band, we might make some changes, but I've got six I'm completely happy with."
 "Excellent," the executive said. "Any hits?"
 "All of them--I hope," Bree said, which got a laugh out of all of them.
 "This first guitarist has worked with several other recording artists on albums but hasn't been in a band for a few years. I think you'll like him."
 "Great," Bree said, picking up the clipboard they'd set in front of her. It had information about each of the musicians they'd hear. They'd certainly worked a lot into the schedule. In the two hours they had available, they had forty musicians to hear. 
 The door to the studio opened, and a man who appeared to be in his late twenties, possibly his early thirties, walked in. He gave a wave and then stepped over to one of the microphones. "Hi. Kell Spinks." He was carrying a guitar case and quickly got out a Fender Telecaster, running a few scales before he plugged it into an amp and stepped up to the mic again. "Ready?"
 "We're ready when you are," Alvin said into the microphone in front of him.
 Kell looked pretty calm as he began to play. The song was "Little Wing" by Jimi Hendrix, one of the most difficult songs to play on guitar, but he not only played it well, it sounded great with just the solo guitar.
 When he was done, Alvin turned the mic back on. "Thank you, Kell. Can you play a bit of one of Bree's songs?"
 "Sure," he said, shaking his blond hair out of his eyes as he began to play one of Bree's more complex songs, called "Night Life." He played several measures before Alvin stopped him.
 "Thanks a lot, Kell. We'll be in touch."
 Kell gave a wave and unlooped the guitar strap from his shoulders. He carefully put his Telecaster back into its case and then waved again on his way out.
 Everyone took notes on their clipboard, except for Trent, and Bree couldn't help but smile at him. She knew he didn't think his opinion counted, but it did to her. She liked Kell a lot. He seemed a bit shy, but definitely laidback, which was important to her. She didn't want anyone who was going to be anxious or start drama.
 The next musician walked in a few minutes later. Bree assumed there was a secretary or someone walking them back, but she didn't know for sure. This was a drummer, a tall man without much hair on top  but plenty down his back. He was great, and Bree really enjoyed listening to him. She wrote only positive notes next to his name, though she hoped it wouldn't be a problem that he was so much older than her.
 For the next two hours, there was a parade of musicians coming through the door, one right after the next. Most of them were great. A few were so nervous, they didn't do as well as they might have otherwise done. Bree liked all of them, but a few stood out to her. They were down to the last person, and she thought she had a pretty good idea who she would recommend to come back to play together, though she wouldn't have minded listening to all of them play again.
 "This is our last guy," Sally said, looking at the paper. "Zach Scott."
 "Cool," Bree said, not sure what else to say. 
 A few seconds later, the door opened and a man carrying a LesPaul case came in. Bree's eyes bulged, but she tried to hide it. If she hadn't been sitting next to Trent, she probably would've let her mouth fall open, too.
 He was hot--that was the only word she could think of to describe him. Tall, muscle bound, with tattoos. His dark hair hung over one eye, and when he brushed it away, she noticed his eyes were a shade of gray she'd never seen on a person before. 
 He didn't say anything at all, only took his guitar out of the case, set it aside, put the strap over his head in one fluid motion, and then began to play.
 Bree recognized the song immediately. It was "Eruption" by Van Halen, arguably the most difficult song to play on guitar, and Zach was killing it. The entire room was silent as the captive audience listened to him play. When he was done, Zach just looked at all of them again without saying anything.
 "Thank you," Alvin finally said. "That was… very good."
 Zach nodded. Bree wondered if he was unable to speak. He waited expectantly, as if he was expecting Alvin to tell him to play something else, but now Alvin seemed incapable of speech. 
 Sally reached over and took the mic. "We'll be in touch, Zach."
 He lifted a hand and then put his guitar back into its case and was gone, like a puff of smoke. 
 "Interesting," Zelda said, rubbing her chin and then making some notes.
 Bree was doing her best to look as if she hadn't noticed how good looking the man was. Trent had a slight smirk on his face, which Bree appreciated. At least he wasn't jealous or hadn't assumed Bree was all hot and bothered. 
 "Okay--let's see if we can narrow the field down to about three or four guitar players, a couple of drummers, a couple of bass players, a rhythm guitar player or two, and a keyboardist, shall we?" Alvin said.
 The rest of them agreed and started discussing the different musicians they'd seen. Some of them were very easy to eliminate while others clearly needed to go on the list for callbacks. The hard part was narrowing down the group in the middle. There'd been a lot of musicians who had similar skills, and in a few moments worth of playing without any discussion whatsoever, it was difficult for Bree to narrow them down.
 "I liked Cat. She seemed nice," Bree said, brushing her hair back over her shoulder.
 Cat, one of the keyboardists, had dressed similarly to Bree, with cowboy boots and a denim skirt. 
 "She sings, too," Zelda added, looking at the notes they'd been given. "We'll need some people who can harmonize."
 "Very good. We'll call her back. I do like the idea of having a few females in the band," Alvin noted. "It seems like so many backing musicians are male. It'd be great to have some other women in Bree's band."
 They discussed a few more potential callbacks before they got to the end of the list. "And then, there's Zach," Jordan said with a grin. "Now, that man could play."
 "Why is he not already in a band?" Sally wanted to know.
 "He was. He played for Grifter, but they just broke up. He doesn't sing, so it's been hard for him to get another gig." Alan shrugged as if that explained everything.
 "Why doesn't he sing? Does he not speak?" Sally asked, and Bree almost laughed, but she figured the executive was serious.
 "He does--but not much. He's a good kid. He's definitely talented." Alvin seemed to be a fan.
 "I worry about him fitting in, though," Zelda said. "He doesn't scream quaint country band."
 "And it would be nice if he could sing."
 "Maybe I could teach him," Bree said with a shrug.
 The others just looked at her for a moment before Sally said, "You might be able to teach him some, honey, but teaching him to sing harmony would be a challenge."
 "True," Bree said. "But… anyone who can play like that won't be around for long. If we're going to get him for my band, we'll need to act fast."
 "Are you saying you want him then?" Alvin asked, and Bree thought she heard Zelda giggle at his wording.
 "I'm saying, I think he'd be a good asset to have in the band," Bree replied. "I definitely want to give him a callback."
"Okay then. We'll add him to the list." Alvin did just that, and Bree nodded before turning to Trent and giving him a pointed smile. Hopefully, he wasn't concerned about her wanting someone like Zach in her band.
Trent smiled back at her, and Bree let out a slow breath, feeling relieved. She hoped having Zach in the band wouldn't prove to be a bad choice, but at the moment, she was excited about the prospect of having such a talented guitarist in her band--nothing more.

Bree remembers the time in high school when Trent almost kissed her. Now, years later, she's still thinking about what could've been. She graduates from college and becomes a successful musician, but when she's hired to sing at a wedding, she has no idea what she's walking into.
Trent fell in love with Bree when they were just kids, but the timing was never right. So... he's with someone else, and he loves her. But when Bree is hired to sing at his wedding, all of those old feelings come back. How can he break off what he has with his fiancee for what might be with Bree?

"Iris, what are you saying? You have your own performance to worry about," Tang Yiyi told her.

"Don't worry about it, Elder Sister Yiyi. My performance will not be until the latter half of the show," Iris reassured her manager. "Besides, they're my juniors. I can help them so why not let me?"

It was Night who spoke up from the band first. He looked at Iris straight in the eyes. "We've never played together before. And we don't have time to practice now."

"I can coordinate with you. I've listened to your music in the last few days. I know how to play your songs." Then she turned to Eros. "Can you let me borrow your guitar? If not, I can borrow one from the show."

"Of course you can borrow my guitar," Eros replied with his mesmerizing voice. "But I use a left-handed guitar…"

"No problem. I can use either right-handed or left-handed."

"Wow, goddess! For real? You're gonna play with us? I'm so stoked!" Thunder was almost bouncing in his excitement.

"Ahaha! This is great! I don't even care anymore if we mess up our performance tonight. Just having Senior Iris perform together on the same stage tonight will guarantee that we're gonna be the talk of the town afterwards." Blaze turned to their manager. "Big Sis Yiyi, let us do this! We want to do this!"

"You!" Tang Yiyi sighed, massaging her temples.

In the end, the manager agreed to the idea. She trusted Iris but not so much the young men. After asking Iris to look out for her juniors, Tang Yiyi left to bring Eros to the hospital for treatment.

Iris returned to her dressing room to change into one of her back-up dresses. She also asked her hair stylist and make-up artist to make some changes in her appearance. After a few minutes, a staff member called Iris to stand-by backstage with the band members.

Jin Liwei walked beside her and she could feel that something was bothering him. He looked stiff and although most of his face was covered by a mask and shades, she knew that his expression looked unpleasant.

"What is it?" She asked him in a whisper.

He hesitated before saying, "Nothing. Don't worry about me. Just do your best on the stage out there. I'll be watching and waiting for you backstage. I know you're going to be amazing, love." 

"Okay. Watch me, darling."

"En."

She met up with Blaze, Night and Thunder who were already on stand-by. 

The young men's eyes lit up when they saw her, looking at her up and down with appreciation. But when they tried to stand closer to her, they felt a cold and dangerous aura from the tall bodyguard beside her. They instinctively stepped back.

The three young men chatted with each other instead, but as their performance drew nearer by the second, they began to feel nervous. Fortunately, seeing Iris looking unfazed, they were somewhat able to force themselves to calm down.

On the stage, the male and female hosts smiled at the camera in front of them when they received the signal from the director that the commercials just ended.

"Welcome back to 'MusicFest Tonight'!" They said together.

"Are you ready for the next performance?" The male host asked the audience.

Audience: "Yes!"

"Our next performers are a rock band that is gaining attention because all of their members are very good-looking—" 

The female host couldn't finish her introduction because a group of teenage girls and young women began screaming.

"Uwah! Is it Pandemonium? Finally! It's the turn of my four husbands!"

"Eros, my love! I can't wait to see you!"

"Blaze, I love you!"

"I offer myself to you, Night! You can do whatever you want to me!"

"Thunder, come to Momma!"

The male and female hosts looked at each other and smiled wryly. Fortunately, they were able to calm the overexcited fangirls to a certain degree.

"Yes, you got it right. Our next performance will be by the rock band, Pandemonium!" The female host continued.

Excited screaming once again.

"However, there seems to be some sort of trouble backstage," the male host informed them. "The lead guitarist, Eros, got injured earlier and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment."

"What?! My Eros is injured?! What happened?!"

The fangirls started freaking out. Even the male fans of the rock band expressed their concern.

The hosts didn't give any additional details about Eros' injury as the show was in a tight time schedule. They hurried to finish the introduction.

Female host: "Despite the accident, Pandemonium still showed their desire to perform tonight. How admirable! Very professional!"

Male host: "Indeed. Fortunately, the band managed to get a lead guitarist to substitute for Eros…"

"Who cares about the substitute? We only want Eros!" 

"Yeah! Eros is the only lead guitarist that we'll accept for Pandemonium!"

The fans were starting to get unruly, expressing their dissatisfaction at the current situation. They wanted to know more about what happened to Eros. They also couldn't accept that the band decided to perform with another person.

The hosts pretended not to hear the complaints and continued. 

Female host: "I think that all of you will be so shocked once you see who the band got to substitute for Eros."

Male host: "I agree. When I saw the name, I thought that it was a misprint at first. To be honest, I'm excited myself to see this person play lead guitar in a rock band. I just can't imagine it!"

Female host: "Exactly! So without further ado, please welcome our next performers, the rock band Pandemonium—"

Male host: "And the one and only Iris Long!"

"Ah?"

The audience stopped, all looking confused. Did they hear it correctly? Iris Long was playing lead guitar in a rock band? What in the world?

Even the Black Stars were taken aback.

The fans of Pandemonium became even more unruly.

"What the hell? Why is Iris substituting for Eros? Can she even play lead guitar? This is ridiculous!"

"Damn! Is she using our boys to gain publicity for her comeback? I object! She should just mind her own business!"

"Maybe the lead guitar part is already prerecorded and she'll just stand there pretending to play."

Hearing the insults to their boss, the Black Stars felt offended. They started quarreling with the Pandemonium fans.

The lights dimmed for a few seconds before the spotlight hit the centre of the stage.

Blaze stood at the very front, looking very dashing in front of the mic stand. Night looked as dangerously handsome as ever with his bass guitar. The ever smiling Thunder looked cute as always as he bounced on his seat in excitement behind the drums. 

Then everyone saw Iris. Her elegant off-shoulder long black dress with thigh-high slit on one side contrasted with the band member's leather, spikes, metal and biker outfits. She should've looked out of place with her sophisticated outfit, but her high and sleek ponytail, bold cat eyeliner and blood-red lipstick successfully made her look as if she belonged. 

That was until the fans recognized the guitar in her arms.

"What the f*ck?! That's Eros' guitar! I can't accept this!"

"What is she thinking? Does she think that everyone can play left-handed guitars just like that? She must be dreaming!"

Iris swept her eyes across the rowdy fans. Raising an eyebrow at them, her hands moved. Her fingers were quick like lightning yet smooth like fluid, as she produced an eruptive tune made up of a complicated chord progression. It was swift, sharp, heavy and electrically AWESOME!

Then she stopped.

One second. Two seconds. Three seconds.

Loud applause and screaming.

The Black Stars went crazy with delight. The Pandemonium fans went crazy with shock. The rest of the audience was captivated. Everyone asked for more.

Iris looked at the three band members and nodded. Even the three looked shocked but quickly recovered. Excitement glittered in their eyes as they looked at Iris in a new light.

Blaze spoke to the mic in a low voice. "My fellow souls, both living and lost, are you ready to experience a 'Nightmare'?"

The drummer, Thunder, tapped his sticks. "Three, two, one!"

And the song began.

Ten Months Before...


Destiny closed the room to her door, sweat dripping down her forehead and down over her sports shirt and shorts. She immediately threw off her sneakers before flying onto her bed, sighing.

'KNOCK KNOCK!' A gentle hand knocked from the other side of her door. "You good, girl?"

"I'm just... fine."

The door slowly opened, revealing a teenage girl with long, blonde hair, an over-sized blue hoodie and jeans, as she questionably peeked into the girl's room. Her blue eyes reflected around small freckles and a generally smooth face, but was definitely old enough to be a young adult's elongated and grown face. "You don't sound fine, Des. I know you're not the best at acting, but still..."

"It was one slip-up!" Destiny whined. "And I wasn't even an important character in the play! Why do you still keep holding it over me?!"

"Cause you'll always be the main character of that play to me!" The teenager laughed, before sitting on the edge of the bed to look at Destiny. Immediately, she noticed wear in the young girl's face. "What happened?"

"Nothing! Just..." Destiny bottled up, unable to admit what she was trying to say. After the teenager placed her hand on the girl's shoulder, she took a deep breath and continued. "I... don't like any of the people on the team. They're all... weird."

"Weird?!" The teenager looked down, before flicking the younger girl in the forehead. "You're gonna have to be more specific than that if you want any help."

"Ow! Okay! They're just... they won't work well as a team, no matter what I try to do to help."

"You're not being pushy, are you? I know this freshman in band who wants to help the leaders, and she is just getting on my nerves with how much she's pushing us."

"No! Or at least... I don't think so..." Destiny slouched further into her blanket. The teenage girl looked glumly below, trying to figure out anything to say that could cheer up Destiny.

"Look, maybe... they're just not the right team for you."

"But I thought you said-"

"I know what I said: a great leader can make it work with anyone. It's the best advice I'll ever GET to give. But... being a good leader, you have to recognize that there will be people out there you just don't click with."

Destiny looked up a few degrees from her blanket, recognizing the teenager. "Then... what about band? What's it like in band?"

"Well, that's a special case, Des. I don't know what it is about band kids, but for some reason..." She looked up, as though the stars were right above. Whimsy filled her lungs, and a sense of nostalgia even she had been unfamiliar with made everything crystal clear. "Band kids have this ability... to work together like the best family in the whole world."

"Really?" Destiny looked up, wonder in her eyes.

"Yeah, it's not like any team you'll ever be on. You might have disagreements with people, but on the field, you all celebrate for the same cause. In most sports, you just play to win. Nothin' wrong about that, but Marching Band is a sport impossible for the selfish, so all who remain will have your back until the end of the show."

"That's awesome!" Destiny grinned, showing her teeth to reveal one of her left side teeth were a bit dented.

"Geesh, what happened to you?"

"Ball to the face."

"Figures."

"Hey!" The two began to play-fight on the bed, laughing and struggling the whole time. After a few seconds, the two broke up, and the teenage girl stood up.

"Well, you're fine now. I need to get my homework done before the game Friday, so..."

"Night', sis!"

"...Night, Des."


Present Day...


"Charity!" Margaret called over to the Senior, making her way through groups of band kids as they made their way to the front of the room, lining up in concert order, or essentially, the section of the smallest instrument, to the section of the biggest instrument, Flute and Sousaphone respectively, with a few exceptions. As Margaret glanced through the line to make sure the rookies were lining up with their proper sections, the blonde teenager made her way up to the Drum Major, smiling.

"What's up?"

"So..." She looked to her friend inquisitively. "How's the new section?"

"Well... I can't judge too much yet. Since most of the Baritones are new, it'll take some time for me to get to really know them."

"No favorites, then?"

The blonde sighed in questionable frustration. "You... you can't do this to me, you know?"

"She's that pumped, huh?"

"Yeah, my sister's always been like that, I guess... I just hope she's as quick as she is eager." Charity smiled back at the Drum Major, thinking about her motives. "Why do you ask? Met anyone crazy?"

"No one crazy, just..." Margaret looked to the front of the line, noticing Arthur awkwardly stranding around with the other flutes. "Someone just reminded me how much Marching Band can change you, you know?"

"Change?"

"You know, like... no one would've looked at me Freshman year and said, 'That girl's gonna be a Drum Major'! But... I dunno. I have a feeling that, even if we did nothing... these kids are gonna run one crazy band."

"I get ya." Charity smiled while thinking about it, looking towards the back of the line where her younger sister was, talking to some of the other upperclassman while working to handle her Baritone without breaking a sweat. "I see it in my sister, and I think I'll start seeing it in the rest of them too, hopefully."

"That depends." Margaret laughed.

"How so?"

"It all depends on whether or not we shit on this year like the last one."

"That..." Charity immediately realized the concern, losing her smirk and a bit of her eye's twinkle. "Is a valid point, Marge. But then again, if they're as good as we hope for, then there's nothing to worry about, right?"

[Me talking to Poos in classroom the next day]

"I met this girl yesterday"
"Oh? What girl? Where? Was she hot?"
"She thought my music was shit"
"LOL what the fuck man"
"But she said the Smiths are good"
"Who's that?"
"The band you called shit yesterday"
"What the fuck were you talking about with some random girl you met hah"
"She was kinda cute though"
"You got her number?"
"No but she goes to our school"
"Woot? Have you seen her before?"
"No, but she's in class 3A"
"Whoa, let's go check her out!"
"Nah man. That's weird. I'm just saying I met this weird girl and she said my music was shit, while she seemed to like the same band I like. It just got me thinking that's all"
"But you said she was cute"
"There are millions of cute girls in this world. I don't hit on them all"
"Ah come on, this will be fun"

Poos grabbed me by my wrist and started to drag me out of the class room. Fucking wanker has such strong hand grip
"Yo let go of me man what the fuck are you doing"
"We gonna check up on that girl. She's only in the next classroom"
"Fuck no man. This is weird"
"Hehe don't worry man. I didn't tell you but I actually have a friend in class A. I'll ask her to figure things out for you"
"Her? I didn't know you had a girl friend"
"uh-hum. She is NOT a 'girl friend'. Just some girl I know"

"You stand here, I'll get her to come out and we can ask instead of going into their class room"
"There is nothing to ask man"
"Aw stop whining. [shouting into the classroom] Hey Maka! Come out here for a sec!"
"What do you want?!" – an unknown girl answers shouting back from the class room.
"Ah just do me a favour and come out for a sec"

Tap tap tap – I hear light running foot steps and a girl comes out of her class room
"What is it Poos?"
"My friend here wanted to find someone in your class"
I try to interrupt – "look I'm not looking for any.."
"Whoa! It's you! I'm sorry!" – the girl notices me and blurts out, visibly startled
"Who… er you are the girl from yesterday"
"Huh? Maka?" Poos looks at us and asks the girl
"Erm yeah, I ran into him yesterday. I mean like literally. With my bike."
"What the hell? Yo Toobs, Maka is the girl you were talking about?"
"Eh… I don't know her name but it is she"
"That means… Maka, did you tell Toobo his music is shit?"
"Y…yes.."
"Bwahahahahaha!" Poos bursts out into a laughter. This girl – Maka, tries to look away, a little embarrassed. She doesn't seem as crazy as she did yesterday.
"LOL, Sorry Toobs, Maka can be a bit too honest sometimes. But it is hilarious. And she is right your music is shit"
"Yo cut it out man"
"Ah sorry, look, don't tell anyone but Maka is my cousin, she transferred this year but I didn't want people to know I have a relative in the same school"
"Why not?"
"It's embarrassing man. We are nothing alike anyway so no one will know if we don't tell them"
(You guys sure do talk alike though…)
"erm… Too..Toobo? I'm sorry about yesterday again"
(Sorry for what, running on to my back with a bike? Calling my music shit…?)
"nah, it's alright. Now I know you are related to Poos it's all good"
"Oh really?"
"Yeah Poos is my friend"
"Ah thanks. I guess it's okay then"
"Right" – I just cut the conversation there and turned around to get back to my classroom. It was indeed kinda funny that I met Poos' cousin by coincidence and they do talk the same shit.

:tap tap: - damn that tap on my shoulder again

"What?"
"Did you check out the Smiths like I told you yesterday?"
"You are preaching to the choir. The Smiths is my favourite band ever"
"Oh wow. I never met anyone in person who likes the Smiths!"
"Actually me neither. I guess they are just not that well known in our country"
"Yes, which is a pity"
Silence. Sudden end of conversation. Erm, what more could we say?
"Anyways bye then" I turn again to head back
"Yeah bye Maka!" Poos waves and walk back to classroom with me
"OK! See you later!"

:RRRRING:

So that was the end of school today. Nothing new, nothing special, maybe except running into this girl called Maka.

"Hey! You are there!"
Maka runs up to me at the school ground exit
"Oh hi. Poos has left earlier"
"I see. I guess we are heading the same way?"
"Huh?"
"I ran into you on my way home with my bike, so I guess we go the same way?"
"Erm, I guess – where is your bike today?"
"Well I chucked it"
"Huh? Was it broken after it crashed?"
"No it wasn't mine anyway" – what did she mean?
"Heh, I just took it from the bike stall over there" – she points to the place where students keep their bikes at our school
"You mean.. you stole it?"
"I guess you can say that"
"I don't know what to say actually"
"Yup. Me neither"
This girl is maybe weirder than Poos.

We walk together in silence. It's not awkward. She's a relative of Poos after all, which makes it almost like she's my own relative. When you are related you don't need to 'break the ice'. Silence is not an uncomfortable thing between families right? (what the fuck am I thinking she's not my family…)

"So what do you play in your band?"
"You mean in my shitty band?"
"Yeah"
"You don't deny it"
"Sorry, can't help it"
"Well I play drums"
"You don't look like it"
"How should a drummer look?"
"Cooler"
She is offensive in every sense.

We walk some steps more and she starts blurting out again – probably some other nonsense come out of her mouth, I hope it's not about music or my band
"So why do you make that kind of music? It's so not Smiths"
"Well you don't have to copy the band you like"
"True, but your music is just bad taste"
"If it is any excuse, I don't write the songs myself"
"Why not?"
"There is a guy.. our lead singer, he writes all the songs and lyrics"
"And you just play along to it?"
"Yes"

She stops her steps and stares at me with a blank look again.

"Why would you do that?"
"What do you mean"
"[singing the Smiths song] hang the DJ~ hang the DJ~, because the music they constantly play~ says nothing to me about my life~"
"Well I guess you are trying to tell me why I play in a band that doesn't play music I have feelings for"
"Bingo"

It's not like I haven't thought about it before. Nico had very strict demand on his songs. He didn't even like me (or anyone else) altering their own instrumental part. Everything had to be played exactly how he wanted it, beat by beat, note by note.

"I don't really know"
"That's kinda sad"
"Look, it is what it is. It's not a problem"
"I see"
We stop talking again. I walk a little faster. Now I am walking a few steps in front of her

:Tap tap" – sigh, by now I'm getting used to it

"Hey why don't you write your own songs?"
"Huh?"
"You know, why don't you write a song that you would like?"
"What's it got to do with you?"
"I'm curious what kind of a tune a Smiths fan would write… you know, there aren't many who appreciate their music here.. I go to live clubs in the city often but I never see any bands that play such music. It's all just straight out rock/punk/heavy, etc. I just want something different"
I have to cut her off here. This is ridiculous.
"I am no different from anyone else" – I make the 'cut' gesture with my hand to make clear this conversation is over now. Again, I start to walk a little faster, she's probably many more steps behind me now.

I just kinda stopped there. She kept one earphone in my ear, and plugged in the other one in her ear. We stood there on the street listening together

The Boy With The Thorn In His Side has a crash encounter with a foul mouthed straight talking girl. One accident escalates to another. Is this love or disaster, comedy or tragedy - only time will tell.

"Today we are going to learn to play...Caprice en forme de Valse." Everyone stared in surprised because we all knew that Caprice en forme de Valse was a professional song and were just 6th graders. "Sir, isn't that a professional music piece?" Someone finally said from the back of the room. "Ha! Yes this isn't your normal band. For if you want a professional as a teacher you must become professional yourself. Put together you instruments so you can finally learn to become the people you wanted to be." He responded. 
      While everyone was putting together there instruments Mr. Williams walked up on stage with a violin. "Did everyone study your music before we play?" He said calmly. I look around to find everyone trying to find out which notes are which on their gizmo gadget. 
      Mr. Malik raised his Baton and Mr. Willam got ready to play so we all put our instruments into playing position.

Everyone takes a deep breath in
      And plays the first note. Honestly, the first note didn't sound that bad, but right after that it was a monstrosity. Everyone was playing wrong notes, we were all out of tune, and the rhythm was just plain old wrong. 
      "Stop, stop, stop, stop, just stop!" Mr. Malik shouted over the booming sounds of the instruments. "Trumpets! Play the first three measures of the first line!" So they played got a few notes wrong and rushed a bit, but they didn't sound to bad. "Now, Saxophones play the same thing." He said. 
      Oh no my turn. I put my fingers on the keys and played the measures he instructed perfectly. My fingers moved like they never moved before, it all came naturally. I decided to continue letting my fingers move all over the place playing the right notes. Then came the late line, the hardest line. I got be hide, squeaked and honked. I wasn't doing so good anymore. When it was the end of the song, my face turned red like a cherry tomato.
      Everyone started clapping- even Mr. Malik and Mr. Willam. But why? I didn't play the song right shouldn't they be disappointed?
      "Good job Jaxson your a natural. I want you to be in Varsity Band this year no need to wait till next year." Mr. Malik exclaimed. "But sir I messed up..." I said very puzzled. "No, no you're fine you play most of it right so your going to Varsity band."
