After discovering Dragon Rage's additional effect, the only remaining move to reach its limit was Smokescreen, which Lian had yet to observe.

Previously, he focused on enhancing attack or special attack moves; this would be his first time experimenting with a support-type auxiliary move. Lian wasn't sure what kind of transformation it might bring about.

It could potentially amplify the existing effect or introduce entirely new effects. Since Smokescreen isn't frequently used in battles, Lian decided to seize an opportunity to test it himself.

Following the battle, Kalia bid farewell to Laro. With their ages being similar, she felt that Laro was a promising Trainer, and there was a chance they might cross paths again in other cities, making a proper goodbye essential.

Laro mentioned that after some time, he too would head towards Pearl City, intending to take a boat to the city hosting the Silver Rank gym. There was a possibility they could meet again during that journey.

The next day, after packing her belongings, Kalia left Pokémon Hotel and embarked from Falcon City with her Pokémon.

The fastest route to Pearl City would have been via Ruby City's flying Pokémon service, taking only half a day. However, Kalia decided against it and opted instead to return through the Kana Mountains, then proceed from Kana City to Pearl City.

Her decision stemmed from not forgetting the Silkworm Tree she encountered earlier in the Kana Mountains. Charti Berries were rare, making that tree, laden with numerous berries, highly valuable.

Previously, her Pokémon lacked sufficient strength, but now, with Charmeleon's power, she was confident enough to defeat the Gligar guarding the tree.

After leaving Falcon City, Kalia entered the Kana Mountains territory. This time, her plan was to swiftly collect the Charti Berries without wasting any extra time.

While some areas within the Kana Mountains housed stronger Pokémon, many regions remained undeveloped wilderness zones, posing unpredictable risks of attacks from powerful creatures.

Therefore, Kalia dared not conduct field training in such places and preferred to head straight for Pearl City as quickly as possible.

Pearl City's gym was originally intended to be Kalia's first challenge, and with a relatively weaker Gym Leader, there was no need for extensive special training; she could proceed directly to face them.

Kalia had noted the location of the Silkworm Tree earlier, so she knew the route to take. The Kana Mountains were vast, estimating it would require considerable time to reach their destination.

"Charmeleon, once you evolve into a Charizard, would you let me fly with you?" Kalia suddenly asked, expressing a common aspiration among many Trainers—soaring through the skies on a flying Pokemon. Naturally, Kalia shared this dream.

Lian pondered for a moment. If he indeed evolved into a Charizard and remained by Kalia's side, it seemed likely that he would agree. By then, they would have spent significant time together, developing a bond. Refusing at that point would indeed be quite disrespectful.

He nodded affirmatively.

"Wonderful! That means we can travel anywhere by flying," Kalia exclaimed joyfully. Previously, she had always wished for such adventures but never had the opportunity.

As they progressed, Kalia released Grovyle as well. Training a Pokemon is not just about enhancing abilities but also nurturing emotional bonds, which improves how effectively the Pokemon executes a Trainer's commands during battles.

In the Ellie Region, it was rumored that if a Trainer achieved a deep connection with their Pokemon, they could utilize a mystical item to trigger another evolution. However, this concept seemed to be experimental and not yet widely available.

Kalia had only heard about it occasionally, unsure of its validity, but even just the possibility motivated her to consistently nurture emotional bonds with her Pokemon. This was also why she wanted to start afresh with new Pokemon.

The Pokemon left by her father were inherently connected to him; achieving such a bond with her would have been impossible.

As they ventured deeper into the Kana Mountains, encounters with wild Pokemon became more frequent. However, Kalia refrained from engaging them in battles due to their relative weakness, which wouldn't significantly benefit her training.

Occasionally, when encountering stronger Pokemon, Kalia would participate in combat, but these battles typically ended swiftly. With Charmeleon's current strength, within the outer regions of the Kana Mountains, few opponents posed a challenge.

They took breaks along the way, and as evening approached without reaching the location of the Charti Berries, Kalia decided to set up camp for the night. She planned to continue the journey tomorrow, since there was no rush.

Nightfall arrived.

By now, Kalia had pitched her tent and sat outside, enjoying her dinner while gazing at the twinkling stars above.

Tonight's moon appeared exceptionally full and luminous, hanging high in the sky like a glowing orb.

As Lian ate his meal with his head lowered, he suddenly felt the ground trembling, as if experiencing an earthquake.

The Kana Mountains were known for frequent Pokemon territorial battles, where Earthquake moves often triggered actual seismic activity. This was one of the reasons few people dared to spend extended time there due to its inherent dangers.

If the Pokemon causing the earthquake was nearby, the resulting vibrations could lead to ground collapses or rockfalls, incidents that occurred annually.

Consequently, many wild areas were typically off-limits to beginner Trainers. Only those at a mid-level or higher ventured in, equipped with powerful enough Pokemon to protect them and sufficient knowledge to avoid danger promptly when faced with it.

"An earthquake?"

Kalia noticed it too and immediately stood up. Fortunately, the epicenter seemed distant; after a few tremors, the shaking ceased.

Boom!

Suddenly, a massive explosion echoed from the distant sky, capturing the attention of both Kalia and Lian. The sound was incredibly loud, akin to a colossal blast.

In the distance, a massive burst of intense firelight illuminated the sky, accompanied by billowing smoke rising high into the heavens.

"That location? Is it near the volcanic region of the Kana Mountains?"

Kalia gazed towards the horizon, recalling something, and quickly checked a map of the Kana Mountains. She confirmed that the source of the explosion was indeed within the volcanic area.

It seemed likely that a Pokemon had triggered an Earthquake move, causing the eruption of a volcano. However, for such an effect, it couldn't have been an ordinary Pokemon; only an exceptionally powerful one could induce a volcanic eruption with its Earthquake move.

As the distant volcano erupted, brilliant fiery light spread across the sky, indicating the lava flow. A vast cloud of volcanic ash ascended, obscuring the stars above.

Feeling uneasy, Kalia wondered what she would do if such a natural disaster occurred nearby. Were there any Trainers training in that vicinity at this moment?

Suddenly, a loud bird cry pierced through the air, seemingly splitting the dense smoke as a vibrant crimson figure soared into the sky.

Kalia's body jolted, her eyes fixed intently on the fiery silhouette in the sky, which appeared to resemble a bird-like shape.

Lian's attention was also drawn to it immediately. At first glance, he recognized this as his first sighting of a legendary Pokemon. If his guess was correct, it appeared to be Moltres, one of the three Legendary Birds.

Kalia shared the same suspicion; the mythical Moltres is known for residing within volcanic lava, making its appearance now almost certain.

"Unbelievable, it's the legendary Moltres," Kalia murmured. She had heard about these powerful and enigmatic legendary Pokemon since childhood, beings controlling supernatural forces and living in places rarely accessible to humans.

"Moltres typically doesn't leave its habitat. Could this be due to the volcanic eruption?" Kalia pondered.

As Moltres soared higher, Kalia noticed something astonishing: when passing in front of the moon, the shadow cast by Moltres revealed what seemed like an oval-shaped object clutched in its claws, resembling a Pokemon egg.

"Is that a Pokemon egg?" Kalia exclaimed, surprised. It was widely believed that legendary Pokemon could not reproduce offspring. So, if so, whose egg could this possibly be? Given Moltres' interest, it must likely contain the descendant of another formidable Pokemon.

Chapter 79: Chapter 79: Heading to Pearl City

As Moltres disappeared into the horizon, Kalia felt somewhat disheartened. It was rare to witness the legendary flame bird, yet she couldn't capture its image properly.

The darkness of night made it visible to the naked eye but resulted in only a blurry photo with her phone, rendering the subject unrecognizable.

Lian watched as Moltres flew away. If he had crossed over as a human Trainer, he would undoubtedly have tried capturing one of these legendary Pokémon. Unfortunately, now as a Charmander, his perspective on legendary Pokémon changed significantly.

Although Moltres is indeed a legendary Pokémon, it possesses ordinary intelligence and is merely stronger compared to regular Pokémon. In terms of base stats, it doesn't surpass some Pseudo-legendary species. Once Lian increases his Special Attack using Combat Points and raises his level, even legendary Pokémon would be no match for him, easily outclassed.

The eruption of the volcano in the Kana Mountains clearly caught the attention of many. With the glow from the lava illuminating the sky, Kalia noticed Trainers from Falcon City riding flying-type Pokémon towards the volcanic area.

Seeing skilled Trainers arriving to handle the situation reassured Kalia. A volcanic eruption wasn't overly concerning unless unfortunate Trainers were present nearby. Most Pokémon around the volcano were Fire-types, naturally resilient to high temperatures.

The next day.

Kalia woke up early and led Lian to the location of the Silkberry Tree. Although Lian preferred to sleep longer, the Charti Berries could significantly benefit him, so he followed Kalia without hesitation.

Using their recorded coordinates, Lian accompanied Kalia on their journey. Considering the effects of Custap Berries, Lian speculated that consuming Charti Berries might grant him additional abilities, which could then be enhanced through increasing his Combat Points.

Even if not, eating Charti Berries would still enhance Lian's resistance to Rock-type moves, as proven earlier, making them highly useful.

As they approached the Silkberry Tree, Lian gradually recalled the area. Nearby stood a large rock face where Gligar usually rested, with the Silkberry Tree situated beside it.

"We're here."

With a gentle leap, Kalia landed on an open platform, immediately spotting the Silkberry Tree. After several weeks, numerous new Charti Berries had visibly grown.

Kalia glanced at the rock face; Gligar often liked to rest there, but its presence was absent now, likely out hunting for prey. This absence worked in their favor. Kalia confidently approached the Silkberry Tree, her eyes lighting up with excitement as she gazed upon the pale yellow cocoon-like fruits hanging from its branches.

Kalia took out a box from her backpack and carefully picked each Charti Berry, placing them inside.

Lian also plucked one, feeling its soft texture; it had no distinct smell. The Charti Berry is known for its bitter taste, making it quite unpalatable.

"Charmeleon, these Charti Berries are not tasty at all. But don't worry, once I mix them with sweet-flavored berries to create Energy Cubes, they won't be unpleasant anymore." Kalia smiled as she continued harvesting the berries diligently.

Once the box was full, Kalia stopped picking more berries. There were still plenty left on the tree, but this amount was sufficient. Combining Charti Berries with other flavored berries allows several Energy Cubes to be made from just one berry. She had already gathered over twenty, which was ample.

The effectiveness of Charti Berries is limited; even if consumed regularly, resistance to Rock-type moves will only improve up to a certain point before becoming ineffective.

With the Energy Cubes made from these twenty-plus Charti Berries, Charmeleon might eventually tire of eating them. At that point, selling the remaining cubes could generate some extra income.

Considering that Gligar guards this Silkberry Tree, Kalia wanted to leave some berries behind. If there were scarce, she would have taken them all, but since there's enough abundance, there was no need to deplete the entire supply.

"Let's go," said Kalia.

Kalia and Charmeleon prepared to leave swiftly before Gligar returned. If caught, it would undoubtedly ignite its fury.

Although Kalia wasn't afraid of Gligar, stealing from someone and then beating them up seemed excessively cruel.

Back at their tent, Kalia began packing, aiming to exit the Kana Mountains today and reach Kana City.

Lian also helped with the preparations. He was no longer the Charmander who only knew how to sleep and slack off; seeing Kalia work tirelessly while he lounged felt inappropriate.

"Charmeleon, thank you for your help." Kalia smiled happily as she watched Charmeleon pitch in, despite his clumsy appearance.

After a short while, Kalia folded the tent, stored it in her backpack, strapped it on, and they were ready to set off.

Half a day passed.

Having already covered significant ground earlier, they were now close to leaving the Kana Mountains. With minimal stops along the way, aside from meals and one overnight stay, progress had been swift.

Within just half a day, Kalia emerged from the Kana Mountains, catching sight of Kana City's buildings ahead.

As she gazed upon Kana City, nostalgia washed over Kalia. It was here, a month ago, that she encountered Charmander, persuading him to become her partner for their journey together.

Kalia did not plan to linger long in Kana City; her bicycle was still stored there, and once retrieved, she could directly ride it towards Pearl City.

The distance between Kana City and Pearl City is relatively short. By bicycle, one only needs to cross a river to reach the outskirts of Pearl City.

Pearl City is livelier than Kana City, being a port town with several marine exhibitions showcasing oceanic artifacts, often attracting numerous tourists.

Without wasting much time in Kana City, Kalia picked up her stored bicycle and promptly set off for Pearl City on her bike.

On the expansive road, the young girl pedaled, accompanied by her Charmeleon persistently chasing alongside. As time passed, the sun gradually descended from the sky, casting vibrant orange hues that reflected upon Kalia's joyful smile.

By early evening, a wide river appeared ahead along the route. Kalia effortlessly rode her bicycle across the stone bridge spanning over the water.

Within the river, numerous Water-type Pokémon were present, most commonly Magikarp swimming continuously throughout. Occasionally, some Magikarp accidentally leaped out of the water near the shore, struggling vigorously to return back into the river.

Magikarp's evolved form is the powerful Gyarados, well-known among Trainers. However, evolving Magikarp into Gyarados isn't straightforward; not every Magikarp can achieve this transformation.

The metamorphosis from weak to strong requires more than just growth through battles; it also necessitates emotional development. Unfortunately, most Magikarp fail to attain this emotional growth.

How to facilitate easier evolution of Magikarp into Gyarados has long been a topic of research for Trainers. Even those who already own a Gyarados may not succeed in training a second Magikarp successfully.

"Gyarados could be quite impressive."

Gyarados is universally recognized as a formidable Water-type Pokémon. Kalia currently possesses Fire and Grass-type Pokémon, so adding a Water-type to her collection would be advantageous.

Her goal extends beyond becoming a Gym Leader; she aims to excel as a Trainer, participate in the League Competition, and ultimately become a Regional Champion.

However, Kalia doesn't plan on capturing a Magikarp immediately. There might be even better Water-type Pokémon awaiting her in Pearl City, after all.
