Chapter 15: Bandit's Camp

[Dungeon Quest]

[Capture or kill 10 bandits]

[Rescue the hostages, 0/5]

"Tch, there's hostages involved?"

In the middle of a dirt road, Isaac was checking the quest screen in front of him.

"I was nervous that I would not have a reason to kill them."

Cheeking his surroundings, he finds himself on what looks like a traveling road between a forest. He can see hoofs and carrier marks, meaning this is a busy road.

"So, i guess, I need to find the bandits camp or make myself a target for them to rob me."

{Let's see the marks on the road point north, so if I travel in the same direction, my probability of encountering bandits will be 50%}

"To the north we go."

*****

After a 20-minute walk, Isaac finally spotted something in the road ahead: a caravan, and by the looks of it, it was recently robbed by the fresh blood puddles on the ground.

{I hope there's any survivors}

He told himself that, though he knew that the chance of that happening was extremely low, by approaching slowly and checking his surroundings, he could now appreciate more the state of the caravan. It had arrows in the sides of it, and a wheel was missing along with the horses. The sheets of the caravan were bloody, and there were corpses everywhere.

Then he heard something in the bushes. Startled,  he distanced himself and took a stance, ready to attack anything that came from the direction of the sound.

"Move one more muscle, and you're dead."

He felt a dagger in his troat. {How?...I didn't see or hear anything}.

"Did you participate in this?"

"What? "No, of course not; when I came here, this was already like that."

"Are you an adventurer?"

"No, I'm a traveling wizard. My name's Isaac."

"Isaac?"

"Huh?...yes..why?"

"Do you perhaps know a [Knight] called Eric?"

"Well, I do know someone called Eric, but I don't know if he's a knight or not."

"I..see"

When the dagger was pulled out of my troat, I immediently backed away from the person. Now I can see my assailant, a woman, or, to be more specific, a [Dark Elf]. She was 5 feet tall, had almost dark brown skin, grey hair, and emerald green eyes.

"And..you are?"

"Right, sorry about the interrogation; my name's [Tannya]."

"So, Tanya, if you don't mind telling me why you are here?"

Narrowing her eyes, she scanned me from head to toe as if assessing if I was worthy of an answer.

"I'm a shadow, and my work was to protect a specific target."

"Hmm, so I can deduce that your target was in that caravan."

"Correct"

"Hmm...i see"

[Random Quest]

[Help the Shadow secure the target 0/1]

{Well, even the system is telling me to align myself with her, meaning the main quest is more difficult at my current level}

"What a coincidence!"

"Huh?"

"I need to capture or kill some bandits to complete a quest...if you catch my drift."

"Sure, I don't mind helping you to complete it."

"Good, then first we need to know where those bastards went."

I approach the caravan to see if there's any clue or trail that can lead us to the bandits main camp.

POV Tannya

{So this is the wizard that helped Eric and his party kill the [Daemon] back then}

{I need to focus on my mission.

I approached the caravan looking for the assailants footprits, and I saw what they did to the caravan. There were at least 8 bodies, no woman in sight (sigh). It was obvious why, so it looks like they took her to their camp.

{F**k}

"I think I found some tracks that are leading into the forest."

The wizard Isaac told me while pointing at the ground in front of him. I approuch him and took a closer look. He was right; some fresh tracks were pointing to the east and north of the road.

I activated my skill [Hound], which allows me to track a target as long as it's alive.

"Let's go. I know where to go."

"Lead the way."

POV Isaac

{She's using a skill that isn't, because the tracks disappeared a long time ago, but she knows where the bandits are}

We have been walking for at least 10 minutes, and the track is leading us to some mountains—a perfect spot to defend, if I say so myself.

"I don't want to sound like an annoying kid, but are we there yet?"

"Then don't say it, and no, we are at least 5 minutes from our destination."

{Damn, that's far}

"So what's the plan?"

"Huh?"

"Huh?"

"I thought you had one after all; you invited me, didn't you?"

{Right...i did}

"So bait and switch sound good to you?"

"What's that?"

I took the 5 minutes of travel to explain in detail my plan to her; fortunately, she agreed to do it. Although it was dangerous for me as I did not know the levels or skills of these bandits, I only needed to make time for her to rescue the hostages.

"Now we are here."

Pointing in front of her, I can see the bandits camp. They had some tents, a wooden fence that covered the sides and the back, two bandits that acted like sentries at the only entrance to the camp, and a big fireplace in the middle of it.

{Luckily, I bought some things for this mission}

"Very well, I need you to eliminate those guards. Once you do that, I will start attacking while you rescue your target, and if you can, the hostages...sounds good."

"Yeah"

Finishing by saying that she disappeared, the next thing I knew was that the guards were dead, each one with a slice to the troat, very clean except for the blood that was splattered into the ground.

{Well, now its my turn}

I first brought up my silence talisman, and I stick it to my body, making me noiseless, meaning I couldn't produce any noise. Luckily for me, my magic can be activated without any noise.

After that, I pulled my [conceal talisman], making me invisible as long as I did not attack.

"Do you hear that guy saying, 'Please don't kill me?'"

"They all say the same bunch of trash."

"But thanks to those suckers, we had a good haul today."

"Yeah, five women... (slurp) I can't wait to taste them."

"Ha..ha..ha, once [Turk] and [Pak] finish with them, they will be ours."

"ha..ha...ha..ha"x5

Thanks to my talismans, I infiltrate with no problem, and I heard five scums gloating about what they just did a couple of hours ago. They all gathered in the big fire in the middle, and unfortunately, they are not my target, at least not yet.

{Where are those bastards? Ah, there they are.}

I spotted my first targets, the [Archers], near the wodden barrels. If a battle broke out, it would be common sense to take out the healers first, followed by the mages, and then the archers. I don't see any mages or healers here.

"Maaann... (Gulp) It's unfair that those two had their way first; we do most of the work, and they took our chances first."

"Shhh... (Gulp) are you out of your mind? Those two are the favorites of [Jadar] if he heard what you say, you're a dead man."

"Both of you stopped; we had alcohol (Gulp), money, and food. What more do you need?"

"Tch..asskisser"x2

{so three archers, and by the look of it, they are drinking}

Putting myself in position when I can see the three faces align themselves.

{Boost} {Ice Spear}

As soon as I activated my skills, the [Consel Talisman] banned me, leaving me exposed, but for the targets, it was too late.

(Zoom) The ice spear traveled too fast for them to dodge, so there was only one outcome.

(puiiht) "Argghhh"

They were impaled and pinged to the side of the fence; only one of the three survived, but now he had an ice spear in his lung.

"What was that sound?"

"It came from there."

{Its time to go crazy}

I pulled a rune called the [Mind Rune]. It reduces the coldown of any spell in half and decreases the mind consumption by 10% for 10 minutes.

Then I pulled the [Elemental Talisman], which increased the damage of any elemental attack that I did for 15 minutes.

When I use the talisman, a big ass magic circle is projected into the ground, alerting the enemy of my location, but that doesn't matter anymore.

"There it is."

"He killed [Torif]."

{Don't worry about the others, but by yourself, [Fireball]}

I threw a fireball right in the middle of where the fire place was, and with the talisman and the pre-existing fire, the explosion was bigger than I anticipated.

(Boomm)

"Aghhh"

"Put it out."

"F**k"

"Bastard"

Out of the five, three were only partially wounded; one was burning alive, and the other was pretty much dead.

"WHAT THE F**K WAS THAT NOISE?"

{So the boss is finally showing up.

From the bigger tent in the far back of the camp, a 7-foot-tall man with bronze skin, dark hair, and red eyes walks out of it.

"Who dares to attack the bloody bandits?"

"Boss, he killed [Drum] and the archers."

"So you wish to die, huh?"

{[Rock Golem]}

In the middle of the camp, a huge golem made out of rock came from the ground.

(Raarrgghhh)

It used taunt immediately and started swinging to the survivors, but surprisingly, the three middly wounded bandits were defending from my golem pretty well.

{That's not good; I need to finish them off quickly before.}

"[Wind step] [brutal slash]"

I could feel a chill in my neck, so I unconsciously used [Mind Blast].

(Crack)

{What?}

"Your spells are useless against me."

(swing) the blade to grease my neck, only leaving me with a flesh wound. Although I was bleeding, I still had my neck.

"Ho, that attack was supposed to decapitate you; what did you do?"

{damage transfer, I know that skill took part of the damage. Shit now, what do I do? Well, let's see if every spell is useless, like he said}

{Lighting}

(crack)

(Baam), the boss was thrown ten meters backwards.

"You bitch.."

{the spell did break when it got in contact with his body, so i can assume its an equippement but its not perfect, it broke the spell but conserved the momentum..i can use that}

"[Wind step]"

{Now I can somewhat see the skill; it's a skill that allows him to move pretty fast, but not enough for me to not notice him.}

"[Double slash}"

{No, you don't..[Ice Spear]}

(Crack)x2

My spell collided with his sword; indeed, the spell broke, but the momentum broke his skill too.

{I wonder if binding spells also count. [Shadow Binding]}

(Crack)

{Tch..it does}

"Enough!!"

"[Blood Sacrifice: Blood Edge]"

He cut his hand, and his blood began to transform his sword. Then he took a stance.

"[Ghost Step] [Bloody Cross]"

{Sh*t..}

He vanished from my sight, and then I felt my hole in my chest burn, and then I saw blood come out of my chest in the form of a cross, two slashes, one horizontal and the other vertical. I came to my knees.

{F**k it hurts..it hurts..it hurts..}

"Tch, you didn't die; you're a tough bug."

(Raaawwwrrgg) I heard my golem. It hurt. The damage transfer will not last much longer, so my only option is this one.

{Sacrifice}

(Boom!!) (arghhh!!) "Huh?"

My golem exploded, taking with him two more bandits. My wounds healed instantly, and I took the opportunity to quickly put my staff into the boss's head now that I was distracted by the explosion.

{Lighting}

(Crack)x2

The spell did break, but the full force of the spell was transferred as movement directly into the boss's head. It broke his neck instantly, but I had also reached my limit mentally speaking, so I just fell on the floor.

{Wait...1..2..3.. sh*t im missing..}

"You kill the boss. I'm going to kill you!"

One of the bandits was still alive, although pretty badly damaged. He had the strength to kill me right now, and I was out of juice. I close my eyes, accepting my fate.

{Damn, and I thought that I would complete this dungeon on the first try}

But I waited, and nothing seemed to be happening, so I opened my eyes, only for me to see the last bandit in the ground with his throat open and the [dark elf] Tannya looking at me smiling.

"It looks like you owe me one."

"It looks that way, isn't it?"

Chapter 16: Bandit's Camp Aftermath

[Dungeon Quest]

[Capture or kill 10/10 bandits.]

[Rescue the Hostages 5/5...complete]

(Baaarrfff) "Huh...Huh...Huh." Right now I'm throwing my stomach out. Although I was mentally prepared for this, now that the anger and adrenaline are gone, I couldn't handle the smell of iron, burnt skin, and sh*t.

"First time killing someone?"

"Yeah..Huuff"

"Huh..huh..huh..h..how are the hostages?"

"The five female humans are fine, but I didn't find my target."

"Hmm... maybe in the boss tent?"

"That's exactly what I'm thinking."

I'm trying my best to stay composed, and for that, I need to distract myself with something. What better than finding her target?

We approach the bigger tent at the back of the camp where the boss came out; it was way too big for only one person; there's got to be something there.

{Hmm...if I were a robber, I would put my haul close to me}

When we entered the tent, we saw in the middle of the tent a desk with books and maps; on the right were a lot of chests; and on the left was a big bed. In that bed, there was a young girl, not older than 15 years old.

"Milia..."

Hearing her name, the girl looked up, and when she recognized the person in front of her, she started crying her eyes out.

"t..t..ta..tannya...(Waaaa!!)"

Tannya quickly went to hug her and calm her down, but by the looks of it, it's going to take a while.

Meanwhile, I went to the desk in the middle to see what books and maps were there.

{Hmmm...these are trade routes with their schedule..so that's how they rob people, but I doubt that this was done by them}

The maps were very specific about when, where, and who would be in the caravan, and in one particular map, it had the route of the resent robbery.

{Hmm...this one says specifically to kidnap the girl and to kill any witnesses, so this was not a normal robbery; it also confirmed that these bandits were not working alone}

Leaving the maps for now, I focus my attention on the books, and I find some surprises. Apparently,  there were tomes instead of regular books, magic tomes.

{[Haste] [Blood Sacrifice] [Ghost Step] mmh? Isn't this the skill that the boss used? ...wait, no, to be more precise, he just recently learned that this was payment for the kidnapping. So who gave him these tomes?}

"What did you get there?"

"Huh? Ah, some magic tomes; these two were used by the boss in our fight; also, there's something you need to see." I point to the map with the information about the caravan.

For a while, she said nothing, and until she started to clench her fist, I can see the muscles in her arms. Damn, I don't want to get hit by them.

"Those bastards!!"

"So you know who gave them the information about the caravan?"

"I had my suspicion, but I have no evidence, and even the map has no names on it."

"True, but if the target that you're protecting is important and the information about her caravan is confidential, you can rule it out quickly, isn't it?"

"Ha, I wish, it's not that simple; human politics are nasty business."

{indeed}

"Well, focus on the good thing; we rescue her, and that's what matters."

(sigh) " You're right."

She put the map in her pocket, and for a moment she started to see the magic tomes, but she became bored by them and went to see the chests to the right.

"Have you seen what's on here?"

"Nope, if it's clothes, I want them, but if it's money or gems, give them to the hostages."

"You serious?" She turned her head to see my face.

"Yeah, I have no use for it anyway, and you need compensation for helping me with the quest, don't you?"

Seen that my look was sincere, she just turned her head to see the chests, and she started to open them one by one. Indeed,  there were coins, a lot of them; there were also gems and ores; unfortunately, no clothes or equipment.

{Right! Now that I think about it, I need to check the body of the boss to get that equipment that can destroy magic, but first I need to check on the spells}

[Haste: Reset the cooldown time of one skill, consumable, or piece of equipment (couldn't exceed 3 minutes) (50 mind required)]

{Hmm?...this spell required attribute points? What about the other two?}

[Blood Sacrifice: Use your own blood to empower a skill, increasing its damage by 20%; it may have a 30% chance to cause bleeding to the target (Cooldown 5 minute) (50 body required)]

[Ghost Step: allows you to make a move untraceable by the human eye (cooldown 5 seconds)] (50 body and 20 mind required)

{It does require attribute points..hmm.. i see, it's limiting the quantity of skills that a person can learn, but at the same time it compensates with quality}

"Are you sure you don't want any of this?"

Tannya brought me back from my thoughts; she was pointing at the open chests full of gold, silver, bronze, and gems.

"Yeah, in exchange, I want these tomes and the equipment the boss is wearing."

"Deal"

Coming to an agreement, I left the boss tent and went to where his body was. He had the head all the way to his back, and the spinal cord was visible to the eye.

{This is going to be gross}

After I stripped his entire body, I found what I was looking for and more.

[Ring of the Fighter: Gain protection against spells (2% for every 5 body attribute points)]

[Necklace of the Initiate: Gain 15 Mind Attribute Points]

{He also had a necklace, so this helped him learn the ghost step skill, i presume}

"Anything good?"

I heard Tannya behind me, and when I turned around, I saw her with the young girl behind her. She was still shivering and couldn't make eye contact.

"Very. Now what will you do?"

"Me? I will wait here; her brother is coming as we speak, and besides, the human females are still frightened to go out."

"Right, I hope the money helps them forget."

"It will be helpful."

"Well, then I think I need to go. My master is waiting for me to receive the news."

"So you're going to leave a bunch of defenseless women all by themselves?"

"Hmm, you have a point. Alright,  as soon as I hear the cavalry, I'm out."

"Very well"

After that, I just kept looking through the bodies of the bandits; unfortunately, no one had anything good, and checking the other tents got the same results.

The hostages were moved to the boss tent with the haul; at first, they couldn't believe it, but when Tannya and I said that we both agreed to give some of the money to them, they began to cry again. I couldn't stand it, so I just left the tent.

{The random quest is not complete yet, so I need to wait until her brother arrives}..(sigh)

"T..Tha.. Thank you for rescuing us."

A tiny voice interrupted my internal monologue. When I look for the origin of the noise, I saw the target of Tannya, the young girl [Milia]. She was a red-headed girl, 5 feet tall, with milky white skin, blue eyes, and little freckles on the nose and cheeks.

"You're welcome. Well, you don't need to thank me; I also had a quest for these bandits, so my reasons weren't that pure."

"It doesn't matter why; what matters is that you did." Suddenly, when she was speaking, her eyes turned golden, along with her hair.

"Soul that came from the Void beyond, the task will leave only you alone, for those you save will become the light to the darkness that will come back."

"What?"

"Milia!!"

I saw Tannya running, catching Milia, who was going to fall to the ground. She is now unconscious by the looks of it.

"What did she tell you?"

"Eh? Something about saving people will become the light from some darkness that will come."

Tannya didn't say anything, so I knew something was up, so I asked.

"Is she a prophet? or something along those lines?" She only nodded her head.

(Nieeeeghhh)x4

Suddenly, I heard horses along with the system notification of quest completion, and I knew my time in this dungeon was coming to an end.

{Well, I hope I get to see them again.

The world came to a halt, and a door came from the ground. With a flash of light, I was in my room again.

It's been a week since I completed the dungeon, and I found out that the skill [photographic memory] is a blessing and also a curse. For one, I can become anything I want; coursing through high school and even college will be easy.

The downside is that I can't forget anything, meaning I remember how those bandits were screaming, the smell of burnt flesh, the sound of the boss's head snapping, every single detail, and it's haunting me.

So I decide to talk to my parents about it. After all, I don't think I'm strong enough right now to deal with this; maybe in the future, but for now, I need to talk to them.

(sight)...{How in the hell am I going to explain this to them? It's not like I'm going to say, Hey mom, Hey dad, I kill someone}

"Everything alright, champ?" my father asked me while we were eating dinner.

"Mom, Dad, I think we need to talk."
