Surely this wouldn't lead to an ecological biohazard, right?

Now Jien wished to make use of this knowledge to fuse the Serpent Vine with the evolved Mandrake and Creeping Moss. Since he was provided with all three, he felt that it would only benefit him if he could take characteristics of each of the three to make something that would suit what he needed.

As each of the pieces of information came to mind the representative text seemed to become gold in color before gliding to the side of the picture of the plant, surrounding it with various types of knowledge directly and not so directly related. It was then that Jien saw what he thought was the true potential of the spell. Not only was it to absorb the information and retain it, it would allow him more thorough connections between the scattered information he would imprint.

What a fabulous idea, I wonder how the brainstorming session that led to this was

Jien started to ponder on this possibility. How would he create the link to use. He could use the magnetism idea that Mark provided for the movement, likewise he could use the wind spell concept from Emily but those were solutions for the movement and not the link itself. He wanted something with a certain amount of length to allow for maneuvering his blade but not anything physical if he could help it.

Pressure forms diamonds, or so they say

After the first couple of days his use of silverware improved, though still not matching his main hand by any measure. His sparring sessions however became daunting. Neither Emily nor Mark took it easy to try and learn what he was trying to learn. Instead, they upped the pressure put on him during each bout. While this was rough on him, and Emily knew it to be a bit cruel she still did so because while under the pressure his success would mean so much more than if he was doing things halfheartedly.

With that in mind he decided to set aside the small pile of books left for adding to his Personal Library and chose this book as his next target. If he could memorize it all then he would be able to recall a variety of information on the ingredients as he worked through the recipe itself. He put his idea of experimentation on hold and returned to his bed with a serious expression. It may take him a few days to record a book as seemingly complex as this one, but he felt that it would definitely be worth it.

A petri dish? Next best thing to a microscope

There were a number of ways to test different ingredients but one of the most common was to take the ingredient and either grind it down to a paste or to take small shavings. You could then mix it with purified water to gain a basic mixture. From this point the ways to test the properties varied depending on the alchemist. The most common practice would be using a variety of nature-based spells to try and identify and extract the essence of the ingredient. If successful one could meditate with the essence of the ingredient without much danger, since the essence itself would be ethereal in nature. However, there would be rare cases where this was not the safest practice, often with parts of more powerful magic beasts. If a magic beast would become powerful enough a part of its soul would bind with its body. Taking the essence of such a material would be the equivalent of summoning a spirit, which if not handled correctly could lead to mortal danger.

I'm seeing a lot of parallels with alchemists and chefs here 🤔

It was after this short prologue that the book began to state the basics of alchemy, such as the understanding that one couldn't just throw several herbs together and expect to create something extraordinary. In fact there was specifically a warning against that given that a mistake could create something that would not only kill the alchemist but everything and everyone in their vicinity. It stated that ingredients should be tested for their different effects separately before even considering a mixture. If you lacked an understanding of the individual ingredients, you wouldn't be able to predict how they may blend or react to one another.

Medieval flat top stove must have all the best alchemists and chefs be so happy

As he looked at the metal slab that was now free of obstruction Jien saw a complex pattern of lines and runes held within a circle drawn around the center of the metal plate. On one side of the circle a line stretched toward the edge of the plate where a smaller pattern appeared at its end, likely representing where the user could interact with the formation. In the center of the smaller design was a singular small red crystal-like stone, looking like a drop of crystalized blood. At certain points throughout the larger formation circle where similar crystals that Jien knew as ignis stone. They were known to heat up based on the amount of mana supplied to them. It was likely that the ignis stone in the smaller formation was meant to be a control point for the temperature itself, while the larger formation would evenly distribute mana to the other ignis stones so that the heat provided would remain even. To ensure that this was the case prior to working with it live during what would be his first alchemy attempt, he injected a small amount of mana into the smaller formation through the ignis stone there.

Ghost had long closed his eyes, seated on the floor with a look of boredom even as his body ruptured. If one still had a functioning pair of ears, they would be able to hear him mocking Orochi for having encountered one thing the God Serpent was unable to block and repel perfectly.
