"Okay." The young man who stood behind Ye Guolong sat in the driver seat without a word and started the car.
Ye Guolong sat in the car, he played with the USB in his hands, cracked a smile and stuffed it in his pocket.
"The old guys at the Zhou and Wang family are embarrassing. F*ck, don't let the technical people be in politics. This is bullsh*t," Ye Guolong cursed before he lit a cigarette for himself.
To be honest, he felt sympathy for people like Jiang Chen.
When he was young, he also experienced something similar. It was his hard work, but people pointed things out on the side. In the end, when the results came out, his name had to go behind theirs.
The good thing was that his technicals were strong. People without ability could no longer climb above a certain point, but he ended up prevailing to the top.

Ye Guolong let the cold air inside the car as he abruptly said.
"Speaking of this, Little Zhang."
"Hmm?" Zhang Wei smiled.
"As someone of your age, what do you think of Jiang Chen as a person?"
Zhang Wei hesitated for a moment.
"In what area?"
"Anything, we are only chatting." Ye Guolong cracked a smile.
"Very rich." Zhang Wei chuckled.
"No sh*t, I don't need you to say that."
"I don't know if it is my illusion or not, but I think he has great combat ability." Zhang Wei had a stern expression.
"Great combat ability? Compared to you?" Ye Guolong asked curiously.
"Of course I am a bit better since I did spend so many years at the border," Zhang Wei touched his nose and said.
Ye Guolong laughed as he didn't say more. A soldier's combat ability compared with a technical person's? It was not embarrassing at all.
But what Ye Guolong didn't know was, Zhang Wei was not completely truthful.
Since it was his superior, how could he say he was weak compared to someone else? They were only chatting and would not actually fight.

"Mr. Smith. I think this is the second time I have seen you drinking tea in the afternoon," A yellow-skinned young man said in a ridiculing tone as he walked in with speedy steps, grabbed a chair without care and sat in front of Smith's table.
If Jiang Chen were here, he would be shocked to find out that the Han young man was precisely Zhang Youjie. The one that described himself as a consulate worker and tried to lure him to immigrate.
"Ahem, is CIB that bored that you are doing the job of the inspectors?" Although complaining, Smith still stuffed the newspaper in his hands into the drawer and folded his hand together. "Speak your mind, what kind of trouble did you cause."
Zhang Youjie was not a consulate worker at all. Although his name is on the list, he is actually a CIB agent. This secret, only Smith as the Consul General knows about.

"Therefore? Is there a problem with this guy?"
"Our intel had always suggested that Future Technology's artificial intelligence's value was not as high as we had imagined. Since Future 1.0's basic principle was logical answering, as opposed to say they are advanced in software design, it would be fairer to say they have a strong understanding of human psychology. Although the encryption on the database is shocking, it is not advanced to the point worth our effort."
"Therefore?" Smith didn't look like he was too interested.
"The situation has changed."
"Future Technology has demonstrated value worth your effort now, am I right?"
"That's right." Zhang Youjie smiled mysteriously and lowered his voice. "Based on insider information, the smart drone control system designed by Zhongxin High Tech is actually from the president and chief developer of Future Technology - Jiang Chen."
"… This is surprising information," Smith turned more serious, he leaned against the chair and muttered to himself.
"Based on the source's analysis, this smart control system will be used on "Dragon II" High altitude unmanned reconnaissance aircraft, it could be used to guide the DF-21D Anti-ship ballistic missile. Because of the barrier in design, the "Dragon II"'s control system has been delayed and expected to be completed by May of next year. But because of this goddamn Future Technology, our little friends in the South Hua Sea are too nervous to sleep now," Zhang Youjie cursed out.
"It's only software, is it worth being so dramatic about?"
Zhang Youjie glanced at Smith.
"Based on the information as well as the analysis conducted by the Pentagon, this artificial intelligence could allow "Dragon II's" hardware utilization efficiency to increase by 10% more than expected. Do you know what this means?"
"I don't know, but I feel CIB doesn't seem to dislike Future Technology." Smith shrugged.
"Of course, because the possibility of a partnership remains."
"Oh?" Smith looked curiously at Zhang Youjie, "Partnership?"
"That's right, based on my research, Future Technology had a conflict with Linhua Technology, but Linhua Technology has connections to the political scene. Therefore, Future Technology received a hindrance to its growth. To alleviate the pressure from the connection, he had to submit this software to Zhongxin High Tech to gain protection." Zhang Youjie had a dubious smile on his face. "We can use this point to convince him. The ticket to the free world, the support from the capitals, there is no way he would not be tempted."

Till the time I finished my work, the product from the companies arrived and I buy a warehouse near my house and store these products, and contacted jimmy to send some peoples to protect these products.

A child with Asperger's is inherently incapable of interacting normally with people and tend to immerse themselves in their own world. Liam was shocked by this piece of information. Samantha owns the company that is currently in the rocks, what's more, her company joined the bidding and both he and Daniel didn't even realize it. He even thought about disqualifying Trident; how could he allow a thief to join their project? Although he wouldn't decide right away because he planned to have the matter investigated first, the thought about kicking his sister-in-law's company out of the bidding sent shivers down his spine. He couldn't imagine what Daniel would do to him if that happened.



Daniel went to his office and asked his assistant to look into everything regarding Trident, the article and whoever was behind this.

Assistant Ahn was quick this time, he gathered everything in less than an hour. With Samantha's skills in keeping company matters private, Daniel wasn't able to get a lot of information that would somehow indicate that Trident was in the wrong. Of course, he also believed that they would never do something like stealing software programs. 

When Daniel saw the documents, he didn't truly understand what he was feeling at the moment. He was mad at Quantum Solutions for doing dirty tactics not just to Trident but to the other competitors who joined the bidding as well. Though there weren't enough evidence as of the moment that says Quantum was the one behind it, with what Daniel had heard several months ago about Quantum's underhand dealings, it wasn't hard to connect the dots. And the fact that Trident had entered the bidding but Samantha didn't tell him about it, made him feel unsettled. 

'Why would she keep it from me?', he wondered. 

These things happened under his nose, his girlfriend's company is attacked because of Cho Corporation's project. And the worst feeling he thought is probably that Samantha kept it all to herself, enduring this mess. This was a problem that Daniel believed Samantha should've told him. She shows herself in front of Daniel as if she didn't have any problems at all. 
'You dare to smile in front of me like that? How deceitful.'

Lastly, Daniel hated himself. He felt really upset; he felt useless. And this has been the third time that Samantha kept something from him; he always had to find out when things have already happened. Tch, how would he even know if this was only the third time? What if there were other things that he really has not known about?

Feeling vexed and dejected, Daniel dialed Samantha's number. She picked up after a few rings. 
"Where are you?" He asked without waiting for her to say anything.

"Um... I'm at the office. Why?"

At first, he thought of talking to her on the phone about what he discovered but he didn't want to give her the opportunity to 'lie' and 'get away' with it.

"Can I go there?"

Samanthas was confused about why Daniel wanted to come to her office, he hasn't been there before but she didn't reject him. "S-sure. You can come through the private elevator, I'll ask my assistant to meet you at the underground parking."

Daniel hung up the phone right after, his actions made Samantha worry. She felt like something bad was about to happen.


When Daniel Cho arrived at the company, he had some papers on his hands. Assistant Chen led Daniel straight to Samantha's office. As soon as they arrived, Chen asked if Daniel wanted something to drink but he just shook his head, Samantha felt something unsettling so she asked her assistant to leave them and not to be disturbed.

"We just saw each other earlier... Did you want to talk about something?", Samantha stood up from her chair but before she could take a step further, Daniel placed some papers on her desk with a little force.

"Care to explain what all these are?"

Samantha hesitated but picked up all of the documents and flipped them. It contained the articles of the recent issue with Trident Company's software theft, their participation of the bidding, Police reports from Harry Davis' case and a screenshot of the incident from Liam's club. While she was checking it, her hands became cold. She felt like she was really guilty although she believed that it wasn't such a big deal. But why does her heart ache as if she was caught cheating?

"You investigated me?", Samantha asked. Her tone didn't show any anger but she wanted to hear Daniel's explanation.

"I didn't intend to. The day after you went to Liam's club, he called me and told me the story. I only found out after that. I was worried that right after I turned my back you got into trouble right away and I waited if you were going to mention it to me but you didn't. And since nothing serious happened, I let it go. When Hannah was kidnapped, I asked you about it but you didn't tell me the whole story. I didn't want anything bad to happen to you in the future so I had to make sure that Davis would stay in jail. Though you didn't tell me everything, did you really think that I was just going to forget about it and not care what happens to you in the future?"

Samantha didn't say anything. She felt like there was a huge lump blocking her throat causing her not to talk. 

"All this time, you joined the bidding for the software project but you didn't even mention anything to me. You had a lot of chances to do that. And now, your company is currently facing this predicament. You had lunch with me a couple of hours ago with a smile on your face but you still didn't even care to tell me about it? I had to find out about it by accident. If I hadn't, how long would you have kept it from me?"

She didn't know why but tears were forming in her eyes threatening to fall.

"Samantha, am I a stranger to you? Do I not matter at all?"

"What? No! I didn't want to tell you about my company's issue because it was my problem, to begin with. Also, I had it all under control. This doesn't concern you why would I bother you with it? I don't go around and poke into your company matters, do I? Why are you so mad?"

"Your problem?", he scoffed. "This happened because Quantum wanted to win the company's project! My company's project! Of course this f*cking concerns me! Even though you had it under control, was it so hard to tell me? Am I nothing to you?"

"We joined the bidding even before we started dating, the project has nothing to do with us. It's business!"

Daniel laughed and turned around, he was even more enraged upon hearing Samantha's retort.

With his hands on his waist, he said, "You know what your problem is, Samantha? You only want to do things on your own. Isn't that a bit selfish?"

Samantha raised an eyebrow, "Selfish? How is that selfish? I don't want to burden other people about my problems! I can handle things on my own, why should I let other people make it their problem?"

"You think that by not sharing your problems and carrying the load all on your own, you're not troubling other people?", Daniel looked at her with eyes full of mixed emotions. 

"What you fail to realize Samantha is by doing that, you're pushing me away. You didn't tell me because you're afraid of bothering me or making me feel bad but guess what? You only ended up hurting me. I feel like I'm a very unreliable person and that I'm not worthy to share your trials with you. I feel so useless."

This is what exactly Samantha failed to realize, she didn't think that by keeping secrets like these would be bad for her relationship with Daniel. She's used to solving problems on her own, she's known to be an independent woman who does things on her own. 

"Although you may not acknowledge it, and you think that the world is against you that's why you're so used to hiding; I think the truth is, you're just not letting anyone in."

Daniel has hit a lot of her insecurities today. She hasn't spoken a single word as she listened to Daniel's scolding. He looked up at the ceiling trying to compose himself as he felt his eyes getting moist.

Samantha could only see his side profile. She fought the urge to run to his side and embrace him, tell him not to be mad anymore, ask him to forgive her. But she was a prideful woman, at least she thinks she is. How could she do that? It would be like going against her principles of being a strong woman. But what she heard next made her heart crumble.

He sighed, feeling very drained, he said, "I'm just gonna go."

"Mmh, I wonder how Yun Xuan's date went." Wan Jia mumbled to herself. She was bored as hell. Her baby had adamantly refused to return home when she called, her sweetheart was still busy, hey! Did these two punks want her to die from boredom?
It was already 7pm; she had just finished arranging the shoes and jewelry she had chosen for the banquet. She sent Yun Xuan another message asking if she was alright. She had tried to call severally but the phone was switched off. If she was meeting Tyler, Wan Jia would have relaxed and taken it as they were too engrossed in displaying their affection for each other to care about her; however, this was a stranger. They were meeting for the first time. How sure could they be that this man did not harbor ill intentions?
Pondering for a while, she gave Lu Aotian a call. 
"Miss me already?" the voice on the other end was deep and cheerful.
"Can I miss you later? I'm worried about Xuanxuan." She said.
"What about her?"
"She went on a date with a strange man and now I can't reach her." She explained briefly.
Lu Aotian sounded annoyed. "Went on a date with a strange man? Is her brain alright?"`
"It's a blind date but that man...whatever it is, her phone is switched off and I don't have a good feeling about this. Help me check her location, okay?"
The other side was silent for a while.
"Lu Aotian?"
"Mmh, what did you call me?"
"Gah! Can you focus on urgent matters first? I'm worried to death here."
"Call me 'husband' and I'll look for her." 
"Fine, husband. Hanging up now." She rushed him.
He giggled after successfully getting that long anticipated word out of her mouth. Finding Yun Xuan's location? That should take less than thirty seconds with his personally modified software.  In fact he had already started checking before she hung up and had just a few seconds left. 
Lu Aotian looked at the screen and his heart skipped a beat. He took a deep breath and texted Wan Jia [she's alright] then he took his car keys and blazed out of the office. Tsk, good thing he was the only one working overtime. Otherwise his employees would freak out if they saw him rush out at that speed.
"Get 20 E class men ready and follow me." He shouted orders to his assistant on phone as he switched on his car tracker. His bodyguards were classified in groups according to their skill and experience. The E class, Excellent class, were the second most experienced and fiercest among them all.
The assistant arranged for them right away. For the boss to summon so many of them, something urgent must have happened. 
….
At the same time, in a hidden room of a blurry underground casino.
"You guys let me go! Do you know who I am? Do you know who my father is?" Yun Xuan threatened. 
"Tsk, just an impostor acting all high and mighty." One of the kidnappers sneered. 
"If you tell us what we want, we shall let you go." Another added. 
"I don't know what you guys are talking about." She cried. These men had been interrogating her for ages about General Yun and the Yun family. How could she say a thing? That was classified information about her family they were asking about and logically Wan Jia shouldn't know any of it unless…unless she had learnt too much from the time she was living in the Yun family mansion.
"Since you don't want to talk, I'll help you talk." A bulky man said as he made his way to her. 
"You...what are you…I really don't know anything!" she said, trembling like a leaf.  If she proved to them that she was not Wan Jia, maybe they would be afraid of offending her father and set her free. However, she really wanted to know who it was that wanted to kidnap her friend. Besides, she would have delivered herself as the real daughter who knew what they were asking about and the one to be tortured would be her. Of course she knew it was dangerous. 
These men were bloodthirsty maniacs who would resort to violence if they didn't have their way and could even decide to kill her. 
The bulky man ordered for a bucket of ice cubes to be brought over and held Yun Xuan's neck roughly, about to shove her head in the ice cubes. 
At that moment, the door flew open and the men retreated, cowering in fear.
"Boss, we didn't get anything from her." The bulky man reported with shaking legs. 
Yun Xuan kept her head hung low silently as she heard the newcomer's firm footsteps get closer…
'A man that could manage to bribe Luo Gishen and his father... Who could it be? Luo Gishen himself? That was not right. That idiot seemed to have been made to create a trap. Her father's political rivals? That would be a possibility if the target was Yun Xuan. 
Someone close to her father? It was quite possible…considering this idiotic mastermind knew about Wan Jia and purposefully chose to aim for her. Of course anyone close to the Yun family would know that Yun Xuan would never tell on her father even on the brink of death. 
She really wanted to know who that despicable man was. She would warn Wan Jia next time. She would also know who among her father's people was a traitor and would warn him too if she left this place alive.
Making a difficult decision, she lifted her eyes slowly and looked up at the man. 
"What the---!" She was so shocked that her first reaction was to faint.

After successfully invading Chen Ming's computer, Shi Lei kept his cool. After all, Chen Ming was using the Internet to chat. If he randomly made any changes and got found out, that would be bad!

Although he had invaded, what if the foe shut down the computer?

Shi Lei only browsed freely through the computer files, trying to get his hand on some secrets.

Shi Lei cleared the server log, eliminating all traces of his operation before getting back to his own computer.

Under Linux system, Shi Lei began to write code.

While typing the code, Shi Lei didn't forget to continue monitoring Chen Ming's situation.

Chen Ming had ended the chat and was watching anime.

Shi Lei laughed out loud. Controlling the campus server, Shi Lei started to temper Chen Ming's room broadband by temporarily allocating a larger bandwidth. From Internet, Shi Lei downloaded several interesting porn films from Wosang Nation. Then, he controlled Chen Ming's computer to download them.

Storing them in a folder, Shi Lei hid it from Chen Ming.

The temporary increase of bandwidth didn't affect the streaming experience of anime. Not aware of anything, Chen Ming had been tricked by Shi Lei to download those porn films.

Shi Lei continued typing the code as he monitored the download progress.

Half an hour later, Shi Lei had completely edit the code. After testing it a few times and ensuring the software could run well, Shi Lei once again logged into the campus server. Through the server, Shi Lei invaded the school mobile service base station.

These self-made little tools, Shi Lei uploaded them to the server and ran them.

This is a software which functions by detecting the signal from base station and determine the position of the mobile phone by triangular positioning calculation.

This software, Shi Lei named it: Exploration.

Shi Lei first entered his own mobile phone number. Software Exploration began to calculate Shi Lei's location.

When the calculation was completed, combined with GPS data, when compared with Shi Lei's actual position, they were roughly the same.

After being confident with the software's functionality, Shi Lei then entered military training company leader's phone number into the software.

In about half a minute, Shi Lei found out that this company leader was actually not at Shuangqing University!

But in Beijiang District!

Since today was the last day of military training and it must have ended already, the school leaders most probably brought the company leader out for visit!

"Heaven has helped me!"

Shi Lei screamed out in happiness.

He then found out Instructor Zhao, the leader of Class 2 of batch '06 Department of business management, Mu Shuang's class instructor. Shi Lei grinned evilly.

Last time at the military ground, this Instructor Zhao had won Shi Lei once. How could he forget about it?

Typing Instructor Zhao's phone number, the software searched for his position.

Again, in half a minute, Instructor Zhao's position was determined. He was still in Shuangqing University!

Shi Lei waved both his hands, his mouth once again widely grinned.

First, he closed the software and then uploaded a different small software.

This software can change the number of caller ID!

For example, Shi Lei's phone number can be changed into military commander's phone number!

From the server, Shi Lei directly activated the caller ID changer software and then stole a phone number from Internet. Through the software, he linked this stolen number into company commander's one.

"Zhao Wu, at 8pm, inspect 6th dormitory, room 302!"

Instructor Zhao received the message, he was shocked!

After all, military training had already ended.

They as soldiers would have to return tomorrow morning. Why there is still any need to do inspection!

Instructor Zhao immediately called company commander.

But just as the signal reached the mobile service base station, it was Shi Lei's software which intercepted and played the busy message.

Shi Lei quickly sent a text message.

"Inconvenient to answer the phone, only via SMS!"

Zhao Wu felt something was not right. After repeatedly checking the phone number of the company commander several times, then only did he replied the message.

"Company commander, is it still necessary to do spot check on the room?"

Shi Lei laughed sinisterly, if not doing spot check, how could interesting thing happen!

"Zhao Wu, when I ask you to go check, just do it! Stop asking any nonsense question!"

Zhao Wu scratched his head. No matter what, he had to obey the order from higher up since he is in military.

"Yes, company commander!"

7.30 pm, Zhao Wu together with another soldier, also following them was Zhan Song, lecturer from Department of Computer Science, were headed to 6th dormitory.

Zhan Song asked with a hint of surprise in his tone, "Zhan Song, I thought military training is already over. Why still conduct spot check?"

Zhao Wu himself was clueless too. Yet, with a straight face he answered: "The end of military training is exactly at midnight!"

"Hehe!" Zhan Song laughed as he led the way in front.

Controlling the computer of Chen Ming, Shi Lei noticed that a few porn films had already been finished downloaded. Instantly through the campus public server, Chen Ming's internet bandwidth was adjusted back to normal.

After doing these, Shi Lei quietly did his thing and secretly opened the microphone, linking it to his own computer.

At about 7.50 pm, a series of door knocking sound could be heard.

Shi Lei was extremely excited and eager for the next scene.

"Good show is about to start!"

Chen Ming's voice could be heard through the microphone.

"Who is it?"

Outside the door, Zhao Wu said: "Room inspection!"

Chen Ming was caught in surprise.

Isn't military training already over?

Why would there be room inspection?!

But he couldn't refuse to open the door.

Chen Ming was not bothered to shut down his computer. Instead, he made a quick tidy up on his bed. His three other roommates were also busy sorting out their beds.

"Still not gonna open the door?"

Zhao Wu's voice travelled into the room. Through the microphone, his voice came out from Shi Lei's headphones.

Chen Ming quickly replied: "I'm coming!"

Once Shi Lei heard that, his fingers were dancing on the keyboard, remotely activating Chen Ming's webcam.

Webcam in year 2006, doesn't have its own LED light. Shi Lei wasn't worried at all of being noticed as he activated the webcam.

Through the webcam, Shi Lei watched Chen Ming opened his room's door.

Shi Lei remotely added Wo Sang Empire's porn films into the media player's playlist.

Zhao Wu, Zhan Song and Zhao Wu's comrade, three of them entered Unit 302.

Chen Ming was acting cool, "Greeting instructors! Teacher!"

Zhao Wu had a glance at Chen Ming and then said: "Today is the last day for room inspection. You guys are all in the room, I am pleased!"

Chen Ming secretly felt relieved. Luckily, he didn't slip off somewhere to enjoy. If he was to get caught, won't that be miserable?

"Reporting to instructor! Strictly speaking, military training time should have ended this evening!"

A trace of smile appeared in Zhao Wu's face.

The following statement was the same excuse he gave to Zhan Song.

Hearing the argument of Chen Ming, Shi Lei smiled with an evil grin.

"This guy seems capable of acting fast!"

"But, lets see how are you gonna cover up next!"

Shi Lei remotely controlled Chen Ming's computer, played the porn film and minimized the video player. He then completed the final step by maximizing the volume.

In Unit 302, out of nowhere, a burst of classic sound of 'yi yi ar ar oh~' as well as 'yamete', 'yiku' etc could be heard.

Chen Ming's face changed. He had a look at his computer.

His three other roommates all looked down with red faces.

Zhan Song faintly smiled at Chen Ming. As for Zhao Wu, he was frowning.

"This is?"

Chen Ming quickly shook his head, "I myself also don't know what is happening!"

"Maybe it's some Internet ads!"

Listening to Chen Ming's explanation, Shi Lei directly maximized the video player. All kind of love action was shown clearly on the 19 inch monitor!

That white, plump flesh hitting each other!

The voice which could tempt any man kept echoing within the room.

With a pale face, Chen Ming quickly grabbed his mouse and wanted to close the video player.

However, the mouse seemed to have fail him big time. It didn't respond to his action at all!

"Yiku! Yiku!"

On the screen, the man in action was going for his last sprint!

At this moment, Chen Ming felt like digging a hole in the ground to hide himself.

Zhao Wu coldly said with a stern voice, "Faster close it!"

"Report to instructor, the mouse is not working!"

Chen Ming felt that he was dreaming now. His mouse was not moving at all yet he didn't think off just unplugging his computer.

It was Zhang Song noticing the webcam and microphone, linking them to the currently playing Wo Sang Empire's porn film. A thoughtful look was revealed on his facial expression.

Zhao Wu's face turned black, "Close you damn computer now!"

Hearing this sentence, Shi Lei laughed out loud while hitting the 'Enter' key.

In Unit 302, Chen Ming who hadn't make a move to close his computer and yet his monitor suddenly turned black as the hard disk spinned heavily.

As Chen Ming was about to unplug his computer, Zhan Song stopped him, "Halt!"

"If you don't want your computer to be damaged, don't turn it off!"

"The hard disk is undergoing low level formatting. If you force shutdown it, the hard disk will be destroyed!"

However, even by not shutting down, the hard disk itself was already almost ruined!

Low-level format would destroy all the data in the disk and there was also possibility of some damage on the disk itself!

Such operation would usually be performed on the hard disk before out from factory. Only manufacturers would do this kind of operation, ordinary consumer almost never used such operation.

With this low-level formatting, Shi Lei destroyed every evidence of his invasion completely!

The world’s top-level hacker, Shi Lei; due to him hacking the world’s top military powers during a joint exercise and attempting to steal information from them, ultimately leads him to get sold out by his own organization. This act eventually caused his own death by a missile bombardment.

INT. - BARNES'S OFFICE to EXT. BARNES'S HOUSE - NIGHT

Kinsey perked as the young technician leaned back from his console and checked his watch. Weird, why would he do that? Didn't matter. She watched him stand, salute Mills and Purcell and walk out of the room.
"Need some software from my truck," he said, vanishing through the door.
Kinsey followed him, more out of curiosity than any real concern. The reopening of the panic room seemed to be taking forever. He should have been able to just unlock the damned door, shouldn't he? After all, his company built the stupid thing.
Ray and Chase were elsewhere, so Kinsey was on her own. Not that it mattered. She just wanted something to do and a stroll behind the tech seemed like that something. He checked his watch again. She found that immensely odd, considering he was a tech guy. They didn't wear watches, did they? She didn't and she wasn't that techie. In fact, she relied on her cell phone and her computer for the time.
Working on the door, he had checked his watch. But he was at his computer at that point, right? Time clearly displayed on the screen, lower right corner. What did he need his watch for?
Now real suspicion kicked in, a feeling she blamed on Gerri. Okay, so it was a stupid, random thing to notice and likely meant nothing, but she blamed a lot on Gerri since they were reunited. Might as well follow through on this, tell her redheaded friend she'd made Kinsey paranoid later. After all, checking his watch could have just been a habit he carried with him from when he was younger. You know, check the wrist for the time. But it was enough of an anomaly to slow her down to the point she was acutely aware when he took the back stairs, exiting through the kitchen door at the rear of the house, instead of going out the front.
Mind you, she thought as she ghosted after him, feet silent from the majority of the pressure on the balls of her feet, there are a ton of cops and departing guests at the front, right? Easier to go out the back. But, how did he know where to go? His people installed the damned room, duh. Hang on. She paused. Did that mean he was part of the team that did the installation, then?
She really was getting paranoid. And was clearly bored enough to turn something innocuous and explainable into a followable offense.
She slipped her heels free, barefoot on the grass outside, wishing she had a gun. Not that she really believed she needed one or anything. But she would have felt better with a weapon in her hands. Like Gerri would ever let her have one. Still. She found a garden rake in one corner and hefted its weight. Even then, makeshift weapon at the ready, she didn't expect to have to use it. In fact, was half grinning, slightly concerned she'd run into the tech and scare the crap out of an innocent man, followed by a hasty apology and hideous embarrassment.
Or did she?
Adrenaline coursed through her, heating her up until she was sweating not just from the California humidity. She kept the young tech in sight, ducking when he stopped, looking up. Checked his watch again.
Waited.
All her senses tingled. The doubt she had in her instincts faded into total focus at the sight of his odd actions. Kinsey retreated when his head turned, panting behind a bush, hands clutching the rake. She peeked again, found him missing. There was no reason for him to be out here, not when he claimed he'd needed something from his truck. Lying was a bad sign. Damn it, where did he go? She crept forward, listening, barely breathing. Reached the spot in the back where she'd last seen him.
And froze at the pressure of something small in the center of her back.
Kinsey dropped the rake, turned slowly. Her eyes settled on his hands, realized she'd missed a detail, the small ring on his thumb, with what looked like iron with a symbol carved into the metal painted red.
A dervish symbol.
"They said you might give me trouble." His voice had changed utterly, one hand grasping her upper arm and pushing her roughly forward. Surprisingly strong for the weak young man with too much weight on his small body she'd first assumed. She'd clearly misjudged him. Kinsey let him guide her, the gun hurting as he jabbed it into her side. "Say one word or try your Nightshade power on me and I'll pull the trigger."
It was so hard not to speak. She bobbed a nod instead.
Damn it, she was such an idiot. Why didn't she tell anyone where she was going? Trust herself enough to just open her damned mouth? Benedict. He might find her. Not that she needed rescuing. She glared at the tech. Likely he had brands marking symbols on his chest.
"Collective," she said.
"I said no talking." He didn't shoot her, though. "And none of your damned business."
Collective.
"You realize," she said as he pushed her against the wall of the house, "I'm working with your boss, Gideon Orter."
"Good for you." He gestured with the gun for her to step to the side. She did without argument. "My orders don't come from him."
How interesting. He looked shocked, like she'd forced him to talk, but Kinsey raised both hands, shook her head. Made the universal turning key at her lips and tossing it gesture.
"Just let me do my job," he snapped, "and no one else gets hurt."
The tech shuffled forward, keeping her in sight even as he approached the wall. He fumbled around a moment, fingers exploring the stone before he found what he was looking for. Something clicked and shifted, a doorway opening, stairs leading upward.
"To the panic room, I assume." Kinsey clamped her lips together, but he didn't seem to care.
"I'm really sorry I have to do this." He pivoted, free hand winding a silencer on the barrel of his gun. "But we can't have witnesses."
"I thought you said no one else would get hurt." Okay, this was bad and getting worse. Kinsey couldn't help herself. Stared into the barrel of the gun. Tried not to hyperventilate.
Failed.
"I lied." He shrugged. "I'll apologize to Orter when I see him."
Damned Gideon anyway. She'd find a way to come back and haunt his ass for letting his little minions loose like this. Despite the danger she was in, despite her fear, Kinsey was surprised to find she was more offended than anything.
Something lunged from the darkness, a shadow with a face as pale as death as the lights of the house went out.
