After accepting that I would not be getting my ring back for some time, we all headed back upstairs. When I made it back to the room containing Octavius, I glared at him and said, "You could have warned us that there was a time trap down there."

Octavius turned his head in confusion, and defended, "I told you there was an enchantment down there, and I don't know what the hell a time trap is. All I remember is when I was snooping around the place, one second I was down there, and the next thing I knew, I was trapped in here."

Sighing in frustration, I had wanted to blame him for how close to disaster Anna had come to. But, from the sound of it, he didn't know what was down there. 

Before I could go on, Cedric interrupted us and said, "Alex, it's getting pretty late, we should probably be heading back soon."

After calculating the amount of time we had been down here, I realized he was right, and it time to get going, so I said, "Sorry, Octavius, we need to get going back to school."

Octavius looked ready to protest, so to comfort him, I explained, "The good news is we found dozens of books, and I bet one of has the describes the enchantments your trapped behind. Once I learn how to dispel the enchantments, we will return and free you."

Hearing about his impending freedom seemed to mollify him. "How long will that take?" Octavius questioned.

I glanced down at the enchantments imprisoning him, trying to get a better sense of them, and said, "It depends on how long it takes to translate the book, it looks like you have at least three wards locking you inside. My guess is at least several months."

Octavius groaned, and said, "Well, I've been in here for so long, what is a few more months."

Bidding Octavius farewell, we all headed back to the surface. The trip back to Hogwarts was brief and uneventful, and by the time we arrived, it was nearly dinner time. After dropping off everything at the room of requirement, we all headed off to the great hall, promising to meet back up after dinner.

After dinner, we all met back up at the room of requirement, and we started with the books. We began separating them into two main piles, with one containing ancient spell books and in the other, all the research journals that Aelius had recorded his experiments. Although I was interested in Aelius's research, I wasn't even going to bother translating his research until I had mastered Latin. Instead, I turned my attention to the spell books; they were the ones that most likely contained the information that I needed to break out Octavius from his cage. 

Eventually, Anna came over and handed me a book and said, "I'll bet that this is the book containing the information that we need."

Carefully opening the ancient book, although I couldn't read its contents, there were many depictions of wards inside the book. Grinning back at Anna, I said, "You're right, this is it, it's annoying it's in Latin, but once it's translated, we can get to work."

In a casual tone, Anna questioned, 'Are you going to translate it yourself, or ask someone to help you."

Not taking my eyes of the detailed drawings, I absently answered, "I've made great strides with my Latin studies, so I am going to translate it." 

I missed the happy look that appeared on Anna's face, and she replied, "That's good. How long do you think it will take?"

Looking at the thickness of the tome, I said, "Hopefully, not too long, I'm more concerned about how long it will take to master the spells."

Soon, it was time to call it a night, and we all headed back to our dorms.
It ended up taking me over a month to translate, and by February, I had started getting the hang of translating Latin into English. One thing nice about translating the material is that as I translated the book, I was also learning the material.

 Of all the things I learned, one of the most interesting was the need for layering wards. There would never be a single wondrous all-powerful enchantment, to create the best protection, you had to layer your spells.

It seemed that the best way to go about creating practical barriers and wards was to leave an exception or loophole in your spell. Then cover that exception with an additional enchantment. By creating a loophole in a spell, it allows the spell to become much more powerful, whereas if you tried to create a general all-purpose ward, you might succeed, but the effects would be rather weak. 

The more I considered this, the more it made sense. All of the wards and enchantments that I've heard about seem to have an exception within them. For example, the unplottable charm it prevents a place from being put on a map, which would let others know of its location, but the spell does absolutely nothing should you walk up and see it in person. This rule can even be seen in the Fidelius charm, which is the most durable protective charm that there is. The spell makes a place absolutely unfindable unless you are told about it from the secret keeper.

I was able to identify that Aelius had used three different wards to trap Octavius. The first was a ward against vampires. Next, it seemed a barrier against physical objects, probably to prevent Octavius from throwing something at deadly speeds. Finally, an enchantment against non-physical objects from passing through. It seemed that Aelius took no chances with Octavius. One interesting thing I learned was all these wards only work one way. If we needed to, we would be able to pass stuff to Octavius.

The other useful thing I learned was that wards such as these were not as useful against wizards. The book warned that even if you took a strong wizard's wand away, if they if had any knowledge about wards, they still might be able to break the wards. This would explain why they use dementors in the wizard's prison, although I am curious about the methods used by other countries to imprison wizards.

While I was happy to identify the spells containing Octavius, I struggled with being to cast them. They were complicated and advanced forms of magic. Luckily, after conferring with my father, I learned that it was easier to dismantle wards, compared to casting them. The only issue I ran into was it was impossible to practice the dispelling spell without practicing on an actual enchantment.

Racking my brains for an answer, I had two main objectives that I needed to accomplish. First being able to practice dismantling wards, and next, I needed information on Grendel. For the first time, the room had failed me, the information it had able to provide on Grendels was vague and full of nonsensical rumors. Not surprising since because Grendels had been wiped out before Hogwarts had even been founded.

I considered going to Hagrid's hut and asking him, but his advice on dealing with a Grendel would no doubt be to make friends with it. I love him, but he has a huge blind spot when it comes to magical creatures. Besides, his garmr pups had been growing rather large, and they had been making me wary of visiting. I imagine it won't be too long before he is forced to get rid of them; from what I've noticed, they are becoming rather bloodthirsty. He'll probably release them in the forest as he has with so many other creatures.

But then, I had an idea that would solve both of my problems at the same time. If I remember correctly from the books, there was a rather talented red-headed wizard in Gryffindor that had a talent for dealing with magical creatures. It was time to track down the Weasley twins.

The following day I tracked down the twins, it wasn't too tricky, chaos seemed to follow them around. I found them smirking at Argus Filch, who was scrubbing the castle floor, it looks as though someone had learned about Filch's obsessive need for the floors to be clean and had used mud to spell out Filch's name, in giant-sized words. Filch was glaring at each passing student as if everyone was a suspect in this grave crime.

When I caught up with the twins, I asked, "Admiring your handiwork."

Fred or the twin who I assumed was Fred, turned around and protested his innocence. "I don't know what you're talking about, George, and I are just admiring a man dedicated to his craft."

Adding to Fred's protest, George grinned mischievously, and earnestly said, "Besides, I'm sure whoever scrawled Filch's name with mud, just wanted him to have something to justify his job. After all, if there were no messes to clean up, Filch would be out of a job. If you think about it, Filch really should be thanking whoever did the deed."

George and Fred delivered their speeches with such earnestness and honesty, that if had I not known them, I would have believed that they were innocent. Raising my eyebrow, I said, "You would be more convincing if you didn't have mud on your robes."

Unable to stop themselves, the twins panicked and gave their robes a look over, after seeing that there was no mud on their robes, they looked back accusingly at me, so I smirked and teased, "If you are so innocent why were you looking for mud." 

A sheepish look appeared on Fred's face, and he said, "You got us, mate. You look like you need something, What's up?"
 
Motioning for the twins to follow, I led them to a deserted corridor, and asked, "I have a favor that I need to ask."

"What is it?" George asked.

Knowing that my request would be strange no matter how I phrased it, I went ahead and said, "I need an introduction to your older brother, Charlie."

Fred and George looked at each other confusion, probably wondering how I knew about their brother. Fred asked, "What you need to speak with Charlie about."

As I looked at the twin's curiosity, I mentally weighed my options, on the one hand, I'm sure I could tell them some random excuse and get them to introduce me. But on the other, from what I have witnessed from them over the past year, they are fiercely loyal to those they call friends, even better, they have no problem breaking the rules and keeping secrets."

Taking a deep breath, I decided to tell them everything, when I had finished, the twins looked torn from being impressed, and jealous at everything my friends and I had been through.

After a moment of silence, Fred said, "Well, if anyone in this place has an idea how to deal with a wild beast, it's Charlie. But you can't actually tell him about the Grendel; he isn't as… flexible with the rules. We will have to be creative when trying to get the information."

After Fred fell silent, George added, "And as for the other issue, it should be easy for us to get him to cast a ward for you to practice against."

We spent the rest of the hour or so coming up with a plan, to get Charlie to help out without knowing what was really going on.

"Devil Tome?, what is this?." Alex asked while holding the book that has dark aura surrounding it
"It's supposed the cultivation technique of a Devil." Sistine said when she sees the book
"Cultivation?." Alex asked because the cultivation techniques he knew are from the novel and anime he read before
"Yes cultivation dear, cultivation is also one of the major things that will make a person stronger." Sistine said
"I see, I have a bit of knowledge of what cultivation is." Alex said he knew about 
"Dear if you cultivate you could also fasten your experience points to make you gain another level." Sistine said
"Really?." Alex asked
"Yes dear, cultivation is one of the main path towards godhood." Sistine said

Alex nodded his head and focus his eyes on the book, he opened the pages of the book and it introduced a legendary devil called Leviathan and his techniques he trained in his life.

"When I read this, I think it's a bit familiar." Alex said while reading the book because somehow he is familiar with it
"How so dear?." Sistine asked because she was with Alex in his whole 4 and a half years in Arcadia but she knew Alex know nothing about the Devil book so she was confuse when he said that it was a bit familiar to him
"Let's see, let me think a bit." Alex said and focus all of his memory, by having a eidetic memory he quickly remembered something
"I have thought of something." Alex said 
"What is it dear?." Sistine asked she was really curious on how Alex was familiar of the book
"Let me ask first, How many cities are there in the Human Continent?." Alex said
"It should be 7 dear." Sistine was confused why he asked about the cities but she still answered
"Name each of the seven cities." Alex said
"Let's see from top to bottom should be, first is Superbia, next is this city Invidia, followed by Ira, Acedia, Avaritia, Gula, and finally Luxuria." Sistine said all of the cities of the human continent
"That's it I don't know why they named the cities like this though." Alex said he was confused why the cities was named like that
"What is it dear?." Sistine was really curious now because she know that Alex really have know it but she don't know how
"The cities named should come from one of the seven Capital Vices or should we call The Seven Deadly Sins." Alex said this was what he remembered from his memory in his past life
"The Seven Deadly Sins?." Sistine asked it was the first time she had heard of it
"Yes the Seven Deadly Sins are namely, Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony and lastly Lust." Alex said the list of all the seven deadly sins
"Dear isn't it different from the name of Cities?." Sistine asked because she found it weird because from what Alex said, that the cities name came from the seven deadly sins but their names is different
"Silly, because it's a translation." Alex said while smiling
"Translation?." Sistine asked she was really confused
"Yes, translate it from the latin word." Alex said
"You mean?." Sistine translated it on the system
"Yes, the name of the cities are the latin word of all the Seven Deadly Sins." Alex said
"Pride for Superbia."

"Wrath for Ira."
"Sloth for Acedia."
"Greed for Avaritia."

Alex said all of the translation of the seven deadly sin from english to the latin word of it
"I see, I understand it dear, but why is this associated with the Devils?." Sistine asked because she didn't what's the connection of the seven deadly sins to the Devils
"Coming from the word Deadly and Sin in the seven deadly sin are the things that the Seven Prince of Devils committed and turn to a demon
"Lucifer the epitome of Pride or Superbia."
"Leviathan the epitome of Envy or Invidia."
"Satan the epitome of Wrath or Ira."
"Belphegor the epitome of Sloth or Acedia."
"Mammon the epitome of Greed or Avaritia."

Alex said all of the name of the Devils and what sins they had and the epitome of it.

"I see dear." Sistine wasn't confused and anymore and understood what the Seven Deadly Sins
"You understand now?." Alex asked after he explained the Seven Deadly Sins
"Yes dear, in short the Seven Deadly Sins are sins from the Seven Prince of Devil and their Epitome." Sistine said
"I guess you could call it that way." Alex commented from Sistine summarizing the Seven Deadly Sins.
"I found it strange though that why the city in the human continent are named after the seven deadly sins." Alex said when he finally cleared all of his familiarity to the name
"Maybe the Devil's came from here and went to your world?." Sistine hypothesized
"That's what I think too but this is the Human Continent, it could make more sense if it was the Demons Continent." Alex said, he was confused because there is no way that a Devil was a ruler of a Human Continent that made the humans named the city after their names
"I'll stop thinking this for now, and from what I know I think all of the seven cities will have some kind of cultivation manual." Alex said
"Yeah maybe because this city is named Invidia so what you found here is the Sin of Envy, it could be possible to find the other  sin to their corresponding city." Sistine said
"Yeah maybe, if I have sometime I will search and complete all of the seven deadly sin book." Alex said because he is planning on cultivating using the books, as it is named after the Seven Prince's of Hell it should be strong

Lying on the floor in the middle of the scattered books, Arthur woke up with intense headache .
-Ooh..
Flying books were last thing, which young Rite could remember beside his father issue.
Pain was somehow similiar to a hangover, although caused by overuse of 'magic' not alcohol.
Arthur slowly rised himself and sat down.He tried to massage his head and this helped him a little.
-Fuck, my head..
After few minutes, he recolected himself and stood up. 
Arthur went to dining room to see, that his mom cleaned everything.
Then, he went to his parents bedroom. Arthr saw his mother, who was looking through the window She was sipping tea from time to time soundlesly.
-Hey mom..
Eve looked at him with anger, almost instantly anger has been replaced into affecionate gaze.
-Son come here.
Arthur hesitantly came over.
-I'm angry for what did you do, but still it was in my defense so I will say nothing about that.
Andrev is now sleeping in guest room. I needed to call 911. I said that he was drunk and he stumbled over his own leg. Then he fell. They took him to the hospital.  X-ray didn't show any fractures, so at the and he just lost few tooths. Maybe it will convice him to be a better father and husband for us. We will see..

Arthur have no idea what to say, so he said nothing and only nodded
-You will talk with your father tomorrow. So now go to sleep boy. Goodnight

Arthur went to his room. He was a bit down, but still he was eager to close in his own room.
After locking doors. He hastily took out wand from the wardrobe.

Rite lied down on his bed, in one hand he was tightly gripping ebony wand. He directed it onto ceiling, and started slowly waving his treasure.

Next day young Rite woke up. Sun was high. It was almost 11 a.m. 
Arthur  changed his clothes, which were still soiled with blood.
Then he went to the kitchen. Youth saw his mother and father. They were talking to each other. Mother was the first one, who saw him. She looked at him and said:
-Good morning Arthur. Quite late for breakfast ?
Arthur silently nodded. He was mainly focused on his father, which was looking at him with mixed feelings. He said nothing to his son.
Family ate breakfast at the table. Eve spoke the most. Arhur and Andrev weren't to talkative today, everyone know why.
After breakfast boy went to his room
-Okay now I need to concentrate on magic. I need something to measure it. Lets think.. electric weight, gaiger sensor, thermometer, some electricity measurement tools.., needle, thread, some glass container.  I have no idea what more..
Arthur wrote everything and with backpack he went to shopping.
Later when he came back , he ate his dinner quickly and then he closed in his room.
He opened his new notebook and started writting

Day 0
"9 days form incident I used magic subconsciously in state of anger. Books started flying around me and started attacking bed, which I kicked earlier. So this as not some random, but controlled action/telekinesis. I gathered every book from ground and measured their weight. In summary I made 45 booksfly , in other words I made 18,5 kg fly for about one minute. And it was without a wand which should somehow increase my capabilities.
For now I planned to make few measurements, I hope I will find something

Young Rite  took blank paper sheet and he crashed it into a ball. Then he took out a weight. It was electric weight, which could measure even one tenth of a gram. Arthur placed paperball on the weight, he zeroed resoult. Then he tried using will, to make paper ball as much heavy, as he can.
Results were shocking for him. First one was 1,3g, then he tried again and he got 1,5g , and again 1,4 g.
Arthur was happy that finally he achieved something. Then he tried using a wand. Results now were over 10 times better - 15,7g ,13,4g and 14,2 g at the best moments. Arthur wrote that and then he took his phone and looked for some gravity spells, but he didn't found anything useful in potterwiki, so  he tried to translate english words to latin and he come up with 'Pondus Incremento'. Arthur tried to use that charm on paperball. Rite directed his wand when he chanted.

Rite made few more tests with paper ball and noted in his notebook:
"After few tests with paperball I concluded few facts.
 Lets say that my base magic strenght is equal to 1. So then :
Fact No.1 When I want to use magic without any chants and wand, effect is equal to numerical value - 1.
Fact No.2 When I use wand my efficiency is about 10 times better than basic one.
Fact No.3 Different movements of wands cause different effect on paperball.
Fact No.4 Using chant 'Pondus Incremento' with wand will augment my efficiency over 100 times  more than basic value - 1.
Fact No.5 Anger can increase my power from number 1 to 18500, but after effects are to serious. 
Fact No.6 Being exited decrease effect of spells in various range. So spells can be augmented and also distorted by emotions.
Fact No.6 When I use chant without a wand I could get score around 5 times better than basic one.(In combination with wand it is a little over 10 times) So I can speculate that chant is mainly interacting with the wand in some mechanism, which I still don't understand. 

Hipotesis No 1.Wand was made especially for latin chant? Or maybe latin language is somehow more magical, than other languages.?

After few hours of tests young Rite found something, which interrupted his moments of joy.

The incident passed quietly. Huang Qunsheng got up early the next morning, and after having woken Huang Xuan up, he started packing. He would go to Sao Paulo University as a visiting scholar. For the sake of safety, Huang Xuan had to follow his father.
Xihuang Industrial Company found them a small villa, which was about 300 square meters, less than two km away from the university. If they got up early in the morning, they could even walk there. Huang Qunsheng loved the surroundings and took it readily. Huang Xuan didn’t have much say in this kind of issue. Brazilians usually could speak basic Spanish but didn’t speak English well. Certainly, even if every Brazilian could speak English fluently, it wouldn’t help Hung Xuan much. Rolin could be the interpreter, but considering the distance, he was too cheap to speak. According to him, “Saving energy is superior to communicating.” Huang Xuan’s father could only speak English and a little Latin, and often had difficulty talking with Brazilians. Luckily, the staff of Sao Paulo University spoke good English and could communicate with Huang Qunsheng freely.
Regarding the language, Zhang Xinyi couldn’t do much either but hoped that Huang Qunsheng could spend some time educating Huang Xuan. As to the result, the past 15 years spoke for themselves.
Rolin was working hard to translate materials, but since his energy supply totally depended on Huang Xuan, the domestic supply couldn’t meet the base’s increasing needs anymore. To transmit energy to the base from Brazil, the base had to be moved. Whether or not it was worth it was a major question.

“How can it be unnecessary? I need your help,” Huang Xuan thought. However, according to the industrial electricity cost at home, 500,000 kWh would cost ¥300,000, which meant nine million per month. Although he had 200 million dollars right now, the operating rights belonged to his parents. All he could dispose of was just about one million.

“It’s about the currency. As you know, I am in Brazil now and, of course, use reals and dollars in my daily life. Therefore, I hope you can convert the money into US dollars and wire it into my account.”
Liu Ziqing hesitated. It was troublesome to exchange ten million RMB into US dollars. However, he considered it for only a few seconds and then said with a smile, “No problem. But since it isn’t stipulated in the contract, I need to ask my company for instructions. Besides, the time of payment will be delayed.”
“OK,” Huang Xuan responded. “Five million RMB shall be deposited into my domestic account; the rest shall all be exchanged for US dollars or reals. If it is too much trouble, you can directly wire RMB into my account. As to the specific account information and terms of payment, I will notify you some other time.”
“No worries,” Liu Ziqing agreed repeatedly. Although Huang Xuan had said that RMB was also acceptable, as an auction house in fierce competition, Sothebys wouldn’t throw its customers into inconvenience.
The talked ended as it was time for Huang Xuan to have the Portuguese class. Da Silva was a responsible teacher. It would be more precise to say that he was a Brazilian who was happy to teach somebody. Judging from the speed at which he talked, it would be fair to say that he made good use of every minute of the three hours.
Huang Xuan was a beginner while Da Silva could only be counted as a Brazilian who studied Chinese. More importantly, Huang Xuan wasn’t interested at all. He just stood there miserably. Watching Da Silva’s mouth moving, he said in a voice nearly inaudible, “Rolin, is there any way that I can speak Portuguese at once? I barely know any English. It’s unbelievable to make me study another language.”
“There’s no way,” Rolin answered seriously.
“You have to know Portuguese even when you are buying a pack of tissues,” Huang Xuan said resignedly. “Can you help me? How about ten million kWh of electricity? Don’t you have some kind of technology from tens of thousands of years later? Did you need to learn a new language when you traveled to another space and time before?”
Evidently, Rolin loved the terms Huang Xuan had put forward, but he still answered honestly, “The base doesn’t have the function of assisting in studying until level 21, and even if it does, the learning will still take a long time. In addition, I suggest you learn the language well, which helps a lot during plane travels.”
Hearing the words “take a long time”, Huang Xuan was bored and said, “What’s the use? You can translate anyway.”
“There’re some things I don’t understand and only humans can. When that happens, you will lose a lot of opportunities.”
“Whatever.” Huang Xuan didn’t care.
Da Silva, who was teaching happily, didn’t notice his only student was absent-minded. Huang Xuan was staring at the textbook on the desk in a daze when Rolin said, “Huang Xuan, are you interested in traveling to another plane?”
This was the third time Rolin had invited Huang Xuan. Every time Huang Xuan had refused before, which wasn’t strange because, after the freshness, the unadventurous Huang Xuan would rather watch a boring movie or gossip than go to a territory beyond his cognitive ability.
If he hadn’t been sent to Brazil, he would have lost interest in Rolin. The properties under his name had been more than 200 million dollars, which would make him on some kind of fortune list at home. He was satisfied with his life. There was no point traveling to another plane.
He hesitated, looked at Da Silva who was talking excitedly, and then whispered, “You know, I can’t go back now. And didn’t you say that the base couldn’t be moved right now?”
“Plane travel can be done without moving the base,” Rolin answered Huang Xuan’s question with some contempt. Then he raised his voice and continued, “but it will consume more energy. The age of planes is all about energy! Energy!” If it had been before, Rolin would have minded the loss of energy, but now he understood that only by opening the channels could the needs be met.
Huang Xuan covered his forehead with his hand. “Sh! Whatever!”
Seeing that Huang Xuan finally had some interest in traveling to another plane, Rolin became excited and said right away, “To get ready, we need the equivalent, a warehouse, energy…”

I'm a normal person. I've always been a normal person. There's never been anything special about me. My parents both work in normal jobs. They're both retail workers at our local Fairprice. We're not that well off, but we make do. It's a good life. Completely, absolutely, perfectly normal. my friends are just normal people, nothing special. What I'm trying to say is that I am completely normal. Or so I thought until I met a certain red man.

It was the day right before my end-of-year Latin test. I was pretty bad at Latin, and since this test was worth 45% of my total grade, it was my last chance to salvage my half-dead Latin grade. Surrounded by tottering towers of thick dictionaries, worksheets, and textbooks, I sat studying until my eyelids felt weighted. Engrossed in the complicated Latin words, I took no notice of the time. By the time I looked up from my work, it was just past midnight. Looking out my window, I realized that the usual glimmering lights of the streetlights and lamps outside weren't there. in my tired, half-boiled state, I could not be bothered to ponder what this meant. Rubbing my exhausted eyes, I stood up to get another can of Red Bull from my stash in my desk drawer. Yes, like every other high school student, I keep Red Bull in my desk drawer. You know, for emergencies. Taking a sip, I looked back down at the words I was trying to translate. My ever-faithful companion, Google Translate, had failed to identify the words. When I had typed them in, my entire phone crashed. Hence, I was forced to translate them manually, with the use of multiple dictionaries. However, after about half an hour of scouring, I simply couldn't find any of the words. I thought to myself, maybe reading them out will help. Oh, what a mistake that was.

"Et Accersi," I squinted closer at the strange words, "In antiquis est, respondendum causa. That doesn't make any sense," I muttered.

"Oh, but it does," came a voice from behind me.

Whipping around, I saw a rather strange sight. A man was sitting on my bed. Not any man that I knew. He looked weird as well, with his red skin and black tuxedo. He wore a top hat and his mouth was curved into a crooked smile. Bright, sparkly eyes glittered at me from under the brim of his large top hat. When he stood up, I realized that he had a small, thin tail, ending in a sharp-looking point. he walked over to my desk.

"Now then, why did you call me?" he peered down at the book I was looking at, "Ah, Latin. I've always loved Latin and I'm fairly accomplished at it. Do you want some help?"

In all honesty, it kind of felt like someone had jammed something down my larynx, preventing me from speaking at the sight of this weird... well I didn't know what it was. Dumbfounded, I could do nothing but nod my head.

"Okay then, let's get to it," he clapped joyfully, "First up, we can't have you working too late, so let's just stop time real quick," he snapped his fingers, and everything around me slowed to a stop, "also we can't have you falling asleep when you've got a Latin test tomorrow. Have some coffee, much healthier than Red Bull," With a twirl of his fingers, he made appear a tall, frothy glass of coffee.

I've snapped, I thought, I've done too much Latin and have probably dozed off. This is all just a rather odd dream. I thought to speak up, but my larynx still seemed clog, so all I managed was a strangle whimper of confusion. Instead, I consented with taking a long, deep swig of the coffee. It was rich and creamy, just the way I liked it.

"Well, with all that set, why don't we get started on this Latin?" he drew up a chair (quite literally, he drew a chair in the air, and one appeared) and set down next to me.

I finally found my voice.

"Who are you?" I asked.

"I assumed you would know," he looked taken aback, "After all, you're the one who summoned me,"

"No, I didn't," I replied, feeling rather wrong-footed.

"You did. You said the words, see," He pointed at the words I had been trying to translate earlier.

I smacked my head. Of course, that was the reason. It was the reason for a lot of problems. Can't communicate with your grandparents? Latin. Your overall grade's being pulled down? Latin. You accidentally summoned a random stranger with a tail and red skin? Still just Latin.

"Anyways, I am the ancient one spoken of in scrolls and literature of long past. Eternally loyal servant of Hades and punisher of the wicked; my name," (his eyes twinkled), "is Satan. But you can just call me Nate, everyone does!"

Dumbstruck and quite terrified, I sat frozen on my seat. This was Satan? The foe of God and man, the master of witches, and the tempter of sinners? The apocalyptic beast, the destroyer of souls? The one who I had grown up hearing terrifying stories about? The one that my mother used to use to scare me into doing my homework?

And he was in my bedroom?

But... wait. This didn't seem like Satan. The stories described him as a huge beast, with long fangs and huge claws, and an unconcealable aura that made everyone around him cripple in fear and a mouth twisted into a grimace of fury. However, the man in front of me looked nothing like that. He practically radiated friendliness, and he was just regular-sized. With crinkle lines around the corners of his eyes, which just proved that he smiled often, and there was something about him that just made me want to trust him. But, just in case, I decided not to let my guard down.

After a lot of studying, we were finally done. Once we were done packing up, I looked up at Satan (or Nate) and mumbled, "Just out of curiosity, why did you help me instead of you know, killing me?"

Nate put his face in front of mine and, grinning whispered softly, "Because I haven't seen another of my kind for ages,"

It took a minute for this to set in.

"What do you mean," I said slowly, "'another of your kind'?"

Nate opened a portal next to me, "Come with me. Hades will explain everything. All I can tell you is this: the fate of Hell itself hangs in the balance. If you don't come and help us, it will collapse, taking the whole world with it,"

In a daze, I followed Nate through the portal, his words spinning in my head. Another of his kind? Hades? Collapse? This night was just getting weirder and weirder. It felt like a dream, but surely, I couldn't have this vivid of a dream.

When I stumbled through the portal, I found myself in a beautiful moonlit flower field. A babbling brook gurgled on my left, with the moonlight reflecting off of its surface and forming a thousand rainbows, and an apple grove was in front of me. In the trees, I saw birds and animals of all kinds strutting around. A loud cluck alerted me to the presence of a curious-looking bird who was currently nudging me and looking up at me with wide eyes. Surely that wasn't a dodo bird? They went extinct ages and ages ago, yet there was one right here, poking me with its beak. Unable to believe what I was seeing, I picked up the bird in wonder, despite its squawks of protest. It was fairly light and very soft. It sorts of felt like a plush toy of Mickey Mouse I had had when I was younger.

"What is this place?" I wondered out loud.

"This," Nate spread his arms out, is Hell. And you're the first person to come down here in centuries. Come on, let's go to the palace,"

"This is Hell?" I followed Nate through the apple grove, "But it looks so... nice. Everyone always tells me that hell is a horrible place, with fire everywhere, and pain and misery in the air,"

"Yes, that's just what the gods want you to believe. You see, when humans are afraid of hell, they won't do bad things, leading to less trouble for the gods. However, the spirits that do end up here are not punished, but rather are rehabilitated. This way, they can be on their way up to heaven, ready for either rebirth or a peaceful afterlife," Nate explained. Before I could say anything or ask any questions, Nate stopped at the gates of a black brimstone castle. When I looked up to observe the castle, I saw a man pacing on the balcony of the second floor. "Let us not dawdle any further. Hades will be excited to meet you,"

With that, he let out a piercing whistle, and the gates opened to let us in. Nate stepped in, beckoning for me to follow.

I hesitated. This seemed wrong. The number one thing that I was had always relied on in my life was how normal it was. Sure, it was boring from time to time, but at least it wasn't confusing. It made sense. However, tonight, all sensibility and normality had been thrown out of the window. In all honesty, I didn't want to go on. I just wanted to go back to my normal, simple life in Singapore, unbothered by, well, anything.

At the same time, something deep inside me told me I had to do this. Like Nate had said when I had first met him, the fate of the whole world was in my hands. If I stopped there and just walked away, the entire world would apparently collapse. I didn't want that. But at the same time, I still didn't want to go in.

These two thoughts warred in my head for a while. Finally, I made my decision and stepped through the gates.

As the gates closed behind me, I had a sinking sense of finality, as though I had made an unbreakable commitment.



The fate of Hell hangs in the balance. Not a single soul has arrived in hell for the past 3 centuries. If this continues, in just a month, Hell will collapse, taking the whole world with it. Accompanied by the wise-cracking Satan, a mere boy sets out to  find the source of the problem and fix it - but the results are so much bigger than anyone could have imagined.

The sunset was glorious. It made Victoria think of the old adage: red sky at night sailors' delight; red sky in the morning sailors take warning. But you couldn't always trust in that, because it only held true when the storms came from the west.
Her habitual caution was the reason that she made the mistake. She decided to check her phone for new messages and glance over the latest headlines, and look at what the weather was actually doing. She was keeping it turned off when she wasn't using it, to conserve power, since even though her solar panels made her self sufficient, she didn't have a large reserve.
The mermaid, or whatever she was, had been so quiet for so long that Victoria hadn't exactly forgotten her, but had somehow stopped regarding her as an active threat. The mermaid was hanging mostly upside down over the edge of the boat, so that she could see the signal lights that had come on when the light dimmed. When Victoria's phone played its startup jingle the mermaid abruptly pushed herself back onto the deck and turned to look at Victoria with bright interested eyes.
"A new type of musical instrument?" the mermaid asked merrily.
"No," Victoria replied, but then she hesitated. "I don't know, I guess it can be. I've heard that there are people who actually compose songs with just their phones."
"Let me try it!" the mermaid demanded.
Victoria's hands tightened on her phone, like it was her lifeline. In many ways, it was just that. It was her connection to the rest of the world. Sure, she had the required emergency radio aboard, and had even used it once or twice when she'd been in a dead area, but it wasn't the same.
"It's primary purpose is communication," Victoria clarified. "And I only have one…"
"I'll be careful with it," the mermaid promised promptly.
Victoria's phone was a rugged model that was supposed to be waterproof for up to half an hour and to a depth of four meters. It had a float attached to it in place of the typical cute charm or security cable, but she would have been reluctant to place it in the hands of a strange child, let alone a strange sea monster. The mermaid began to look impatient.
She offered quickly, "I'll show it to you after dinner?" 
Her stomach growled at her own words, and she realized that she hadn't eaten anything since the mermaid had boarded her ship. She swallowed nervously as she realized that she had just introduced another potentially dangerous topic when the mermaid smiled. She seemed to have very sharp teeth, and Victoria wondered if she'd just leapt from the frying pan to the fire.
"Do you have any fresh fruit?" the mermaid asked with interest.
Victoria blinked.
After a moment, she replied reluctantly, "I have a few frozen berries left. Half a lime, and a lemon, I think." She hoarded them like treasures, eating only a little at a time, and got most of her vitamins from greens. But she could imagine that to a sea dwelling creature, fruit might be a delicacy worth bargaining for.
The mermaid's expression looked like she was pitying the poor, as she asked doubtfully, "You went ashore recently enough that you still have ice and that's all you have?"
Victoria hesitated over the 'still have ice' but decided to skip the topic of refrigeration, and replied, "There's an epidemic going on, I picked up what I could."
"Epidemic? A sickness?" the mermaid asked.
Victoria nodded.

The soapy water struck Mac, T'andy, and the stranger with cool indifference. Bobby lowered the squirt gun after she had their attention, and slapped the sign behind her. "No breaking the six foot rule, and no more than two to a table!" she scolded. "I let Mac off easy earlier, because he's old enough to choose how he goes, but you gents had better all take two steps back right now."
The self proclaimed Chris T'andy knew that the older vampire in front of him couldn't understand the demand, but he took two steps back and wiped the spray off his face. He was embarrassed by his attempt to form words that he felt like he almost knew, but the cold soapy water had given him a chance to step back and think, and he realized that he'd understood the second language that the elder had tried. It was the language of science for centuries, a dead language, he had spoken in Latin. 
"Recedite, ne tradendae pestilentia," he attempted to explain the instruction to step back to prevent transmission of sickness. He suspected that to someone who truly spoke the language he was butchering it, and he was pretty certain that his kind couldn't catch the virus, but the older vampire stepped back without protest.
Mac gave him a look, before turning back to the bar and grumbling at Bobby, "Waste of good soap n'water."
Bobby rolled her eyes and pointed out, "In other countries people who break the quarantine restrictions are getting themselves shot with bullets you old dwarf."
The vampire turned to stare at her, but Mac laughed like it was a joke between them instead of the insult that had gotten his younger self into more fights than he could count. Bobby raised an eyebrow at him, and asked dryly, "That guy a friend of yours? He's obviously not from around here."
He glanced back toward the elder, the other, the being like himself, and the joy and fear he'd felt when he'd seen eyes like his own bubbled back up inside of him. Bobby was right, the clothes were similar to what you might see on the street, but the details were all wrong. The jeans looked like they were wool instead of cotton, and the ridges that were normally caused by the weight of the canvas folded into the seams were just… bulges. The shirt under the odd jacket appeared to have laces at the cuffs, and no seams or even a visible hemline at all. The combat boots had laces, but lacked the metal rings and other details that they should have held.
"He is a teacher?" he told Bobby and Mac a little uncertainly. "I'm not sure…"
Mac shrugged. Bobby looked them both over once more with her sharp eyes, but simply replied, "Okay."
The elder asked something that took him a bit to puzzle out, but he decided that it was probably a repeat of the words he'd said earlier in a language that the vampire hadn't known that he knew. Something along the lines of 'I will teach you, and you will teach me this language.' He sorted quickly through words that might mean yes and chose to reply, "Certes."
He was trying to decide how to say, "But this is not the place to begin," when the elder spoke again. He wished that he could ask for a written exchange, because the school days when he'd taken classes where Latin was spoken were more than two centuries behind him. He was pretty certain that the elder had said, "This is not the place."
He nodded reluctantly, and his gaze moved back to the bar where Mac was watching them with a wary expression. Bobby appeared to be focusing on wiping down the counter, but he was pretty certain that her attention was also focused on the two strangers. He was reluctant to walk away from this place that had welcomed him after so long, even though he wore a different face and it was a different era. He was reluctant to leave Mac without saying more, without…
His eyes moved back to the stranger who could probably answer centuries worth of questions about what he was, and where he came from. A flicker of movement caught his eye, and he turned to look at the frightened face of the woman who had shifted in her seat. He glanced at the other faces, and saw their stillness, their tension.
He had been connected to these people through his songs only a few minutes ago, and he had felt their enjoyment, but now they looked like a gang had walked in and started something. Or like they saw or sensed something very dangerous from the man he had been so excited to see. Or maybe, like they could suddenly see how dangerous he himself could be.
"We should go somewhere else," he said in English, before remembering to try to translate it into Latin.
The elder who had offered to teach him nodded.
Mac took a step toward him, but only a single step. It was enough to make his heart ache, and he promised rashly, "I'll come back tomorrow night."
"I'll be here," Mac replied, and it was a promise.
He smiled joyfully, and Mac blinked at him, and then gave him a wide grin and two thumbs up.

"Oh!" Linze gasped, and slapped her fist down into her waiting palm. "That would actually explain everything!"

"What? Linze, no!" I screamed out desperately.

Monika just floated there, palming her face. /"Why would you even think that?"/ she asked Charlotte. /"Shouldn't there be [Null] abilities that deal with translation?"/

"Words alone don't give understanding. There are, but there are two forms of the Ancient Language. One can be translated with [Translation], and another script that can't. It is Protected somehow.

"We found [Cure Heal] in among ancient scrolls of the first type. And we knew that it was actually a translation of a previous work, and that it was an attempt to duplicate two separate [Null] abilities into one usable spell."

I blinked. "Holy shite, really?"

Charlotte beamed. She really relished how much we were also genuinely interested in these things. Not like Linze or most other users who simply wanted to know the spells and how to improve their ability to cast spells. She was a researcher and archeologist, we were engineers.

/"… but how does that even imply that we're sleepers from this ancient civilization of yours?"/

"But why nooottt?!" Charlotte whined. "It would make things so much easier if the reason you could invent spells is that you learned the ancient language as a first language! The things you know are all the things we lost! I even only know that there are over a hundred material elements from the old writings that we could translate."

/"These aren't things that require magic to find out, you know?"/

"And that begs the question, then how do you do that? You both have indefinitely deep magic reserves, ability to cast all spells, a spirit that can cast any personal magic. But more than that, you have strange magic tools that no one has seen before!" 

Charlotte pointed down at the projector cube then the headset I was always going on about how it allowed me to see despite having my eyes covered. "For example, are you in that box, Lady Monika?"

/"Um. No? Of course not?"/

"Obviously not. She's right here." I pointed to my cheekbones, implying that she was sealed into my eyes. Like Rezo the Red Priest and Shabranigdo. It was much safer if everyone believed that Monika was not something that could be stolen. And it neatly explained why my eyes could not be cured by any simple [Heal] spell. 

"See? Remote visual communication! Who has that? That is far too convenient a coincidence. I don't believe that all!" 

Monika winced. /"If I didn't know any better that would actually be quite convincing, Player."/

"But we are still not five-thousand-year old people popsicles, sorry."

Charlotte sagged, her long green hair draping onto my chest. "I was hoping for that… but that would have been too much. It would be much too convenient."

/"Why do you want to know so much about the Ancients anyway?"/

"It was the Ancients that Formalized Magic! They were the first to use magic stones, the first to study spells, the first to enchant spells onto objects, they made great works even now impossible to duplicate and spread out all over the world! And then suddenly, their entire civilization just collapsed and all knowledge about them vanished from the world.

"Honestly, I do not actually think that you are Ancients… that was just the best possible thing. But if you could create new spells as much as you wanted, that's because you are able to Formalize magic using the same method the Ancients did. When you understand [Spell Names], you understand how to finalize the form."

"Excuse me. Wait. Are you telling me that when we've been saying these [Spell Names], we haven't been actually speaking in [freaking English]?!"

/"Well of course not, Player. Why would YOU even think that?"/

"… because I've been doing that. And I'm kinda dumb, apparently." I frowned. "So there IS actually something wrong with calling it the [Blood Maker]."

"No, no there isn't," Charlotte answered. "The spell succeeded."

"But then why did it…? Ah."

Because when I was saying [Blood Maker], it was in English and everyone else was just hearing it as something else. And Linze said [Blood Maker] in her native language.

Casting my own personal spell didn't just mean casting the admittedly simple effect I was asking, it also had to cast my emulator. Monika and I were x64 processors in a world optimized to run ARM apps.

Linze knocked herself out because casting the spell instantly drained all her magic power from actually visualizing what happens behind spells instead of just willing things to happen. My spells were so horribly optimized, they should barely even run except that I had literally obscene levels of magic power to throw at the problem. The benefit to me was that it scaled up much much greater than regular spells. Other people had to stack spells to get greater intensity, I could ramp it up as high or as low as I wanted because I was using magic itself to block magic. 

All this time I visualized The World as a separate entity, the thing that enables magic. I wanted as little to do with the world and automatic magic as much as possible. It wasn't about denying the impossible, but I wanted freedom to do as I wanted instead of having to search for prebuilt spells in order to do anything. And so the world obliged, because dammit this magic system of theirs was so nice like that. 

I was so dumb. Arrogant and dumb. I groaned and explained as such.

Imagine Harry Potter magic and its faux Latin used for casting. (Wingardium Leviosa), etc.

But I was hearing and saying it as [Highwing Raiser] while everyone else was hearing it in their Faux Latin. Or [Summon] for (Accio), or [Banish Weapon] for (Expelliarmus). Everything sounds much chuunier as heck if you're using the root words.

No one would expect [Highwing Banisher] (Wingardium ExpelliarDus) to work at all instead of the general blasting curse (Confringo). I was going around being all MAXIMUM CHUUNI not knowing shit about anything. If I could video myself I'd probably cringe at the delusional boy.

/"That little change makes all the difference?"/ Monika mused. /"Arbitrary magic surely is arbitrary. Because you had constrained magic to what you believed was possible, it meant your spells became their own self-contained rulesets. That's a unique form of self-sabotage, at least."/ 

Monika shrugged, /"I'm much the same way, player. I could deal with the idea that magic was basically just imposing my will on the universe. But we can't deal with the idea that there can't be any limits to it. It is just too unfair. Why should we be rewarded like this after everything we had done?"/

"I object on the grounds that you can't cheese as effectively if you don't know the rules you can abuse. If there aren't any rules then you can't cheese at all! And that's just unsatisfying."

/"Hahaha. Of course you would."/

With chakra, or with MP, or even with any goddamn MMORPG level-based magic, at least it would be understandable. It makes sense that not everyone can be a scientist or an athlete or an artist. But I had no idea why anyone in this world would ever just let the chance to wrap reality to their whims pass them by just from sheer lack of motivation to exert themselves!

"But there ARE rules to magic," Charlotte demurred. "From what I understand of what you just said, it is not so much you can break them, or that you have no limits, but you create even stricter limits on yourself. There really are many rules to magic… but these are rules other people have laid down and you don't have to follow them.

And with our group training on combining their abilities, all seemed well. Though, something still felt wrong. We looked ready, but we hadn't been in actual combat. Plus, I only knew one person who had been in combat with demigods and came out alive. We needed him. Despite his curse, I needed to get him here immediately. So, I pulled Beverly away from the rest. If anyone knew curses, it was a child of the Underworld. 

"What did you need?" Her smile is still strong despite training with Loretta. I told her my plan, ready for a response that it was impossible. She surprised me. "There is one way. I could take the location of the curse and transfer it to another place. Though the change is permanent. Would you want him to be stuck here forever, despite his wishes to be free?"

Suddenly, I had a plan set, and told her, "What about a person? Would making the curse a person instead of location would that help?" I knew the basic details, but she surprised me.

"Of course, the only thing is when that person dies, it's lifted. Meaning if it's you, you have a choice to end it when you want. But if you don't die honorably, he will likely blame himself. That's a lot of time for regret."

Lucii Filius saeculi, L metra in omnibus diebus doceant nihil certaminis ultro bellum." With the last word, a huge mass of smoke poured into the room. When it finally cleared, standing before us was Bill. Sadly, we caught him at a bad time. It looks like he was in the shower, and we pulled him away before he could reach a towel.

"Ladies, leave the room. Beverly and Lucy, can you get him some clothes and armor. And leave it at the door." As I turned around, I noticed Omoro had fainted. Again, not good sign for a leader. "Also, someone carry Omoro to the forge, she'll wake up best there. Once she does, send her to me." Amidst the girls giggling, I noticed one of the guys seemed to look annoyed. "Larry, can I speak with you." I took him to the target practice room. "Okay, you don't seem to like Bill. I know how this can get, I reacted the same way. But he's here to stay, so if you could do as I did, and put those feeling aside, that would be great. Since he will be our combat trainer, I want you to start us off. Every target here is yours for the next 15 minutes, for every bullseye you get, it will be like one jab to his face. Do what you must." As I left Larry, I heard the targets being assaulted by a hailstorm of daggers. "He'll be fine, " I said to myself.

Upon entering the room again, Bill called me up. I knew what was coming, "Sorry about pulling you away, but you have exactly 28 hrs to help us ready for a battle. I didn't know anyone else who could do it, and you're the only one I trust enough to get it done in that time." I waited for the pain, for a punch at least. But Bill surprised me, he went for a hug. I was caught off guard to the point that I didn't stop him.

"Thank you, I was growing tired of that farm. And train your team I shall." I'm glad they got the clothes already, because this was awkward enough. "I wonder if my comrades are still able to be controlled? That would speed up your progress. Point me to the training room, and we can see how your team fights all together."

I stood back, and proudly stated, "This is no team, we are the Regiment. And we fight for honor. You have been accepted on a leadership role William Stern, Son of Iapetus. From now on, you and I are linked. Summon your comrades in the training room, and the Regiment will fight. We are not a troupe for show, in everything there is honor, and for all time we fight."

He saw what I was doing immediately, thank Othrys. "I, William Stern, Son of Iapetus, agree to these terms. From now on, you are my commanding officer, and for all time I fight." I called the girls and Larry, all of whom looked red and sweaty. "Ok, to the training room. Bill, summon your best. They can take it."

"Come forth Legion 16! Combat ready!" Bill summoned armored dryads, much like the ones he fought daily. These however, looked different. Almost like a tougher tree. However, the Regiment was up to the challenge. Within 25 minutes, each dryad fighter was either ash, drained, or in pieces. Bill looked like he was ready to laugh or cry. In the end, he laughed. "Great job, immense teamwork and raw power from everyone! Even the little one had her moments! I would never think someone her age would have such ferocity in battle! Great job to all! I am happy to see it again!"

Immediately, the Regiment felt his words. The sons of Apollo said it first, "Again?!" And Bill began laughing again.

"Combat in the field continues until either retreat, surrender, death, or victory over all. Do none of you agree? Now, today you will face a countdown of legions, you started at 16, you end at 1. As combat instructor to the Regiment, this is my choice." This was unseen, but I was thankful his lesson had a reason they would understand.

"Bill, why don't we try consecutive battles, they can take it. And Regiment, don't give up, we can take all 15 back to back. Bill, send in 15." I was confident the Regiment would join in. And they gave me hope, with a battle cry of "For all time", we destroyed each wave without stopping. Omoro and Lucy were like twin fireballs. Beverly and Loretta both created barricades and fought with the rage of the earth itself. Jeremy and Skylar created multiple tempests without any hint at their actions that would be noticed or easily countered. Larry and Jade were expert long-range fighters, as well as Jade using his blinding light to confuse from a distance. But, Welch surprised me. Despite his lack of combat abilities, he was in the thick of it. Both healing and fighting, and doing a great job of both. After another two hours, all fifteen legions had turned the training room into a veritable forest. We all agreed to rest, and Bill decided he would stay in the training room to rest since he wasn't known by the Titans and it felt like home. That left me my bunk in the captain's quarters. Oddly, it was within the limit of space for Bill and I to be separated. It's been an amazing day, and tomorrow we go to the field to ready ourselves for battle on the grounds.
