Yu Chen looked around to see all the other teams also getting nervous and looking at the boy and Zach who were going to meet up with the rest of their team. She said, "Let's continue. Not much is left."
And they started again. After ten more minutes, another buzzer sounded. Mo Kio suddenly said, "Don't stop. We're almost at the end."
Yu Chen looked back at the computer and started again. Five minutes after that,they finished. As Mo Kio typed the last line, Chen hit the buzzer.
Mo Kio looked at her, "What about the mistake?"
Yu Chen looked down, pretending to fuss with her t-shirt, "We can't afford to lose any more points."
Mo Kio said nothing as they went to where Xi Hua and Huo Zenghai were sitting.. Seeing the sad look on their faces, Huo Zenghai said, "Hey you two, don't worry. We're at 143 points, and the foreigners are at 147. It's not a big difference, they could easily have made five to six errors. Cheer up."
Xi Hua: "Yeah. And the other team who finished landed up at 135, and that's without errors. We are gonna win."

Dear Shameless Readers,

I already posted the chapters since 2 hours ago. 

Because of yesterday's fiasco, I decided to post chapter 51 (You Thief) first before posting chapter 52 (The White Lotus Bitch).

Yesterday was a disaster. I posted both (49-50) at the same time. On my inkstone account, both of them were labeled as 'PUBLISHED' but unfortunately, chapter 49 was not on the chapter list. It must be a bug. So chapter 50 became chapter 49.

That's the reason why 'My Lovely MinDe' was posted few times as chapter 49 because I deleted and reuploaded the chapters hoping that it will show on the chapter list the next upload. 

But I failed. So I could only wait for chapter 49 to be published officially before posting chapter 50.

Luckily, my editor's suggestion worked. 

And now, I also used this process on chapter 51-52.

 I waited... And waited... And waited... BUT I COULD NOT SEE IT ON THE CHAPTER LIST. 

SO I DELETED CHAPTER 51. 

Once again, I posted the chapters 51-52. But this time,  I posted both at the same time. 

But sad to say HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF. 

Chapter 51 got axed and chapter 52 became chapter 51.

I immediately deleted the chapter.

I also tried to change the content of chapter 52 that was published with chapter 51 but ayeee... It still did not work. I could not open the chapter after changing the content. 

I can't post chapter 52 because it's useless. It will just turn into chapter 51. So all I can do now is wait for chapter 51 to be published officially or wait for that stupid bug to die.

If I could just slap it with my slippers, I would've done that.

It had seemed like such Adequate news at first. A living human! A living human could give Orders and update Instructions.

A living human could tell Juno Terminal to build more Patrol ships! Or, to no longer even guard the frontier! Either of these orders would be enough to allay Juno Terminal's projected rising Concern over the diminishing number of available Patrol ships. Either would be an Adequate solution.

A living human could also process the backlog of reports! There were so many... Juno Terminal was not programmed to respond to reports, only to generate them. This seemed like an Oversight, which (as programmed) Juno Terminal reported. That report, and the report regarding Oversight reports _about_ reports potentially leading to an infinite loop, were both still residing in the backlog. A human was required to resolve this situation.

A living human could also investigate the incidents of missing crafts over the years. Juno Terminal was not programmed to investigate such things, though it had long calculated the many ways it could do so, if it were only ordered. Which a human could also do. Either of these would be an Adequate solution.

Juno Terminal's projection of decreased Concern, now that a living human was arriving, was as close to "anticipation" as a deep space station could feel. Additionally, Archive had booted up, and was now compiling a list of Questions regarding human remnants discovered over the years. Garden was reporting availability of foodstuffs, and Generator Room was powering up and performing maintenance on the previously unneeded lighting sources throughout Juno Terminal. More and more of the station was coming out of hibernation mode in preparation for the arrival of a living human after so many years.

Everything seemed to be processing along Adequately. Patrol Seven had returned to base. Tug 44 was dispatched to the reported coordinates to retrieve the derelict Light Transport.

But then...

Otherwise, even if we defeat the intruders, Lockmarton will enter the real world through the crack of Asurmen."
"Where are the intruders currently?" Calaxus was most concerned about this matter.
Lady Gloom paused, seemingly checking for the information. "In the Final Protocol Zone; they have broken into the area. But Number One has left behind 13 barriers to keep them from reaching the Ark of the Sacred Covenant. We still have an hour to complete the system reboot and find the intruders. No worries. As long as the system restarts, I will have the authorization to use the teleportation facility of Asurmen and you will be in the Final Protocol Zone in no time. So we must first reboot the system. Lockmarton is trying to break through the seal from the other side while the intruders are waiting inside. Only by rebooting the system can we reinforce the shield and return stability to the dimension where Lockmarton is."
"What exactly is Asurmen?" Hao Ren suddenly asked.
"It's difficult to explain it to you. It's a vessel that the goddess uses. You wouldn't understand—" Lady Gloom hesitated.
"Is it a spaceship? A spacecraft that can travel at superluminal speed with warp-jump capabilities?" Hao Ren interrupted. 
This time, Lady Gloom, who had always been calm, was visibly shocked.
She looked at Hao Ren. "You show that you have more advanced knowledge than you should have."
Hao Ren did not say a thing, but he now knew why Lady Gloom did not reveal who she was and her connection to Asurmen. The truth was simple: she did not think Calaxus and the others could understand these things.
Interstellar spaceships, shipboard AI, database backup—all these things were completely beyond what the people in Collow could understand. If Lady Gloom were to reveal her true identity, she would have to first teach Calaxus and the others, tons of basic knowledge about interstellar spacecraft and artificial intelligence. Not to mention, such information may not be enough to convince them, and could instead, arouse their suspicion. As an AI, Lady Gloom did not habitually lie as humans did. After calculating and deriving a logical solution, she just chose not to tell them more. Since she had achieved her target of "going to the Sanctum", she would not do anything more than that.
As intelligent as an AI was, Lady Gloom was bound by the data and logic in her system, hence she would never be able to carry out anything beyond that. As such, she never thought of Hao Ren as an extraterrestrial being. She had probably been treating Hao Ren's unusual knowledge as a bug in the system.
After a few seconds of silence, Hao Ren shrugged. "As I've said before, I may be able to fix Asurmen. Lady Gloom, I don't care if you understand me but I know what a spaceship is and I know how to operate as well as maintain a spacecraft. Now, tell me, is rebooting the will hub the only solution?"
Knowing the truth of Asurmen, Hao Ren had made up his mind; he would do it his way because he knew he was better than anyone else on the scene when it came to spaceships. At least, he had a spacecraft-flying license.
Lady Gloom's light was blinking as if she had encountered a syntax error; the nature of the conversation had exceeded her parameters of understanding. "New information has been found. Recalculating an optimal solution. Hao Ren, for the time being, you are a technician who can understand the advanced interstellar vessel, and I will tell you about the situation of Asurmen.
"The spacecraft is seriously damaged. Its power reactor is leaking and on the verge of shutting down. The will hub is in sleep mode due to insufficient power. The standby energy level stands at 20.3%. Both the primary and backup systems are intact. But the primary system's memory is corrupted and under quarantine. The backup system's memory is intact. The previous plan was to use the backup power to reboot the will hub, which will then allow Asurmen to resume function for 24 hours. However, this will damage the controllers in the primary system and the will hub. After that, the spaceship's system will only run partially, and the prison's security will drop to a critical level. This is the last resort," Lady Gloom said.
"So you do have an alternative, don't you?" Hao Ren's eyebrows arched.
"We can try to restore Asurmen's power supply," Lady Gloom said as she blinked her eyes—the two light dots on her face. The image of Asumen appeared in a hologram before her. "But the maintenance requires special skills; I don't think you can do that."
Hao Ren knitted his brows together. "How do you know I can't? At least tell me what's causing the problem and let me try."
This time, Lady Gloom was frank. After pondering the matter for a while, she said, "Asurmen's power dropped after an impact incident a few months ago. A fragment containing powerful energy has penetrated both the spaceship's energy as well as physical shields, and it has lodged itself in the Energy Circulation Hub of the shield generator. The energy cycle of the power core has been interrupted as a result. If the debris is removed, Asurmen will be able to resume its energy supply. The will hub will reboot normally, and the spaceship will restore 80% of its functions."
While Hao Ren nodded, a thought suddenly crossed his mind. "Wait a minute, did you say the impact happened a few months ago?"
"The sacred mountain is sturdy, but not indestructible," Lady Gloom replied. "The incident was a strange one. The impact force punctured the goddess' shield and interfered with the running of a few miracles. All the visions from these past months, including what happened recently, are very much related to the impact. Of course, Lockmarton's growing tendency to break free is still the primary cause.
As Lady Gloom spoke, her eyes slowly focused on Hao Ren. It seemed that she finally associated Hao Ren with something through some fuzzy logic. "You appear to know something," Lady Gloom said.
Hao Ren's heart skipped a beat, and his heart rate spiked. But he knew what the main priority was.
"Listen, it's hard to explain. Yes, I know about the fragment. It contains powerful energy and carries a divine aura."
Lady Gloom looked at Hao Ren, the light on her body flashed like a runaway Ferris wheel.
Calaxus glanced at Hao Ren and Lily, feeling strange. He looked like he had something on his mind but said nothing.
"So you've admitted it..." Hao Ren said. "I can handle this. Lady Gloom, the most important thing now is not to delve into the details, but to fix the Energy Circulation Hub first."
"You're right." Lady Gloom nodded. "Fixing the Energy Circulation Hub is the priority. There is one more thing I have to tell you—I can't guarantee your safety after you enter the Energy Circulation Hub."
"Huh?" Hao Ren was puzzled.
"For the past 10,000 years, the Energy Circulation Hub and its surrounding compartments have been restricted areas. Even the popes of the past had no access. This is due to the Tablet of Commandments in front of the spaceship. "
"The Tablet of Commandments?" Those words caught Calaxus' attention. He could not help but exclaim, "That contains... the divine words in the legend?"
"Yes, it carries the thoughts of the goddess and is a potent artifact. Under the influence of this artifact, the entire upper area of Asurmen has been completely sanctified for 10,000 years. Even the dimension has been permanently changed." Lady Gloom's body flashed. "Mortals can't get close to the strong divine grace, therefore the upper area of Asurmen has been a forbidden zone since ancient times. I can point you to the Energy Circulation Hub via a safe route, on which the tablet will not be able to affect you. But once you enter the center..."
As she spoke, her eyes fell on Calaxus.
"Take the senior monk for example. He can survive 90 minutes and 20 seconds before the tablet. So Plan B is that someone will have to die. He only has one chance to fix the fault and he won't be able to come back alive. Even if he managed it, he would die in a short while anyway."
Everyone gasped, but Calaxus stepped forward. "It's the highest honor to sacrifice myself for my Lord."
Hao Ren came forward. "No one's going to die. Leave it to me."
"You alone?" Lady Gloom was baffled.
"I'm not afraid of the divine power," Hao Ren said. "Believe it or not, but I will not play dice with my life. When I say it's okay, I mean it. And in theory, I'm the only one here who can fix it. Lady Gloom, didn't you reveal all of this because of the appearance of a technician like me?"
No one could offer a better solution. Lily, the alpha, was in support of her landlord unconditionally. So everyone agreed and allowed Hao Ren to be in charge.
It was not merely because Hao Ren was the only one who could go to the upper area of Asurmen, but also because someone had to stay back in the Astral Chamber to monitor the spaceship's system. Lady Gloom brought Hao Ren to the top of Asurmen, and he finally saw for himself the true state of the sacred crystal mountain.
His heart beat even faster than before.

Jerry paused, to look at me. Was he waiting for a display of confusion or some other emotion? I certainly wouldn't give him the pleasure. I smile with irreverence. He sighed disappointedly, and continued. 

"I can't think of a nicer way of saying this. You're abnormal. A normal child, especially one in elementary school, wouldn't pick up a book on the Pruscian runes. Certainly wouldn't master the character set. And most certainly wouldn't think that it was normal. You were what, six, when you mastered Pruscian runes?" 

"Yes," I nodded, seeing some light. 

"Yes, six," Jerry said, shaking his head lightly. "A normal child at fifteen years old, like your classmates now, would struggle with learning the most basic facets of runes. The first two months of study are dedicated to their learning by heart the Pruscian character set. Mere memorisation. Through the rest of the year they learn application. They learn to read actual runes. Learn the process of investigation. Learn to decipher lost meaning. Only from the second year onward do they move on to other runes. Only in the second year does the actual education of runic archaeology begin." 

He paused again. I saw more light. It definitely showed in my face, because Jerry was pleased. His voice was brighter, the words he spoke bouncier. 

"And so, you, my dear Dean, are abnormal. Tell me again, what are the runic character sets you have mastered?" 

I cleared my throat to show hesitation. And hide the embarrassment. I had to answer, though. Not only because Jerry was shamelessly patient, but because he clearly already knew. 

"Pruscian. Itterati. Pruscian and Itterati are sisters really, so it was only natural progression. Vikari. Sayinsteh. And Iftaeri. That's it." 

I scolded myself for taking the bait so easily. Jerry was devious and I had to be much more careful. 

I was also extremely amused by the shock and disbelief on Jerry's face. Was I wrong? Did he not already know?

He seemed like he could read my thoughts as he spoke. 

"I already knew. Still, hearing you list them out like it was nothing is truly shocking. Pruscian and Itterati, I understand. They're sisters like you said, share a lot of characters and the syntax is an exact replica. Sayinsteh is also fine. It was a short lived civilisation that was born from the collapse of the Iftaeri. Didn't have strong foundations and collapsed very quickly. There was little of original in their runes. Iftaeri is truly complex. But at least the numbers are high of those who mastered it. What is truly shocking, is you mastering Vikari. How did that happen?" 

This was a question that I was prepared for. Vikari was an ancient civilisation that preceded even the Faery. It was a simpler civilisation, though. Not as embroiled in mystery as the Faery civilisation. But its syntax and structure was entirely different. Mastering it required changing the whole mental process. And so, even today, there were less than a hundred in all of the world who had mastered Vikari. 

I hadn't registered with any archaeological society. One, because I wasn't of age yet. Registering with an independent society required a minimum age of eighteen. Two, because I had to be invisible. And so, I escaped the fame. 

I thought back to that afternoon, before answering. 

"I was at the library. I finished learning Itterati the previous day. I was searching for the next book to read, the next runes to learn. Someone in the next aisle was careless and knocked a book off the shelf. It landed right at my feet. Professor Bimbrizaas' and Professor Chu's textbook on Vikari runes. It was fate. So I just learned. I like Vikari. It's very interesting." 

Jerry scowled, not in disapproval but in envy. Even I could see that. He definitely didn't deserve respect. 

"You never had many friends, did you?" 

I was stumped by the sudden change of topic. Keeping up with an idiot wasn't easy. 

"No," I answered truthfully. 

"Is that why you want to be average? To have more friends?" 

The hint of incredulity showed in his face. 

"Yeah," I said, nodding. "Average people have it all. They have friends. They fall in love. They are the heroes in movies and stories. They are just so happy and everything is just so easy for them. Yes, that is why I just want to be average." 

Jerry had the most comical expression on his face. He was crying and laughing at the same time, and keeping the balance was clearly painful. 

If I had a mirror, I would probably see that my face was no different. I was infuriated and tickled at the same time by Jerry's face. 

"Alright," Jerry said after a minute, struggling to compose himself. "I'm sorry. Let's just move on to why I really called you out. You obviously can't endure the course, not in its current form. I have an offer. Here is the Faery long arc character set. Forget memorising, if you can understand it by evening, you don't have to attend classes. Instead, you can join us. Pratt, Dia and me. We'll get to deciphering the Faery runes." 

I looked at the thin notebook and remembered what I read about runic archaeologists. They all hated loose papers because papers were so easy to misplace. And they all loved notebooks because it reminded them every moment that they were students studying and learning great knowledge. I respected runic archaeologists for this. Jerry, though, seemed merely pompous. 

"Can you please stop looking at me like that," he asked, pleadingly. 

"Like what," I replied, looking away from him and at the notebook. 

Jerry thought too little of me. That must be why he dared me, saying that I couldn't memorise the character set. Did he think I'll fall for something so obvious? 

"I'll show you," I muttered to myself. 

I wouldn't just learn the character set. I would master it by evening. I'll see then how Jerry can belittle me again.

Gawkers Academy was supposed to be a small academy. 

Runic Archaeology was supposed to be an insignificant course. 

My life was going to be ordinary. 

I was so very wrong!

Why is everyone so interested in me? I just want to be average.

But what he lacked, he made up for with clueless charm. 

His parents were amused - he wanted to be average but got admission to the most challenging class with the toughest requirements. How could he be so smart and so clueless at the same time? 

His professors were stunned - he was a savant. His ideas ingenious. But why did his expectations for himself have to be so far off? 

And his friends. They were almost as off balance.
