She really did find the unassuming German article in the local newspaper's website and saw that the local police's website also reposted it. Using translation software on the article, she found that it was practically the same as the Weibo translation.
According to the prosecutor representing the local police, the female exchange student's classmates reported that she had been missing for two days, and when the police searched for her, they found her corpse in a forest behind an abandoned building. She had numerous injuries and was also disfigured. A great man once said: "When I cut my finger, is a tragedy... When you fall into a sewer and die, is a comedy." In this trail of thought, one might decide to be a sadist to their character and play it for laughs.

Not saying that angle won't work or anything. After all, Charlie Chaplin didn't get famous for no reason.

What I'm trying to say is that comedy is derived from the absurd. Things that don't normally happen is happening and no common sense is needed for the fictional characters involved since people being dumb is funny in its own right. I mean, go ask Disney for advice on writing overly dumb characters who couldn't possibly exist in real life at all.

This doesn't mean that a pure comedy needs to be all laughs though. It is becoming strangely more common to weave plot threads together in order to make even more absurd scenarios for the characters involved. I remember watching an Anime called 'Gamers!' about a group of teenagers gradually falling into the rabbit hole of misunderstandings since they wouldn't outright ask each other anything.

It was to the point that Otaku online dubbed it with the meme-like name of 'Misunderstandings: The Anime' in the face of how complicated the story was becoming because of what was happening on screen.

Just me writing the word 'absurd' twice should be enough for those reading this to understand that making it 'out there' is what's comical. Even 'Kaguya Sama- Love Is War' derived its comedy from the absurd humour that is what WOULD happen when two geniuses won't give up in trying to win over the other in their battle of over-the-top scheming.

Reactions that are so over-the-top they are comical in itself are also common to comedies. Even in those fictions that try to balance their comedy with heavier moments that were built to be tear jerkers.

However, to actually be able to overcome the hurdle of making the sadder moments impact instead of making the reader laugh, what is most needed is the inclusion of something 'mundane' in a character's life which can be subverted. There is a reason The Simpson's and other comedy tv shows go back to the status quo after a joke has ended, it is because seeing something mundane turn hilarious is subversive.

And what is comedy if not a subversion of what we are expecting? The reason everything used to laugh in high school when someone fell after another guy pulled his chair before he sat is because something even as mundane as 'sitting' didn't follow the tradition, turning into something they didn't expect.

A long comedy story needs this sense of returning to the status quo even if it has changed a little after the previous punchline. You can't always throw in punchlines without proper build up to it.

There needs to be at least some time for the characters to take in an exciting incident before the next one comes, and that is especially true when it comes to punchlines. It's just how comedy works.

Now you may be thinking of writing a character who has some funny joke that consistently happens in the story. Maybe your character keeps on falling asleep in climactic moments or maybe your comic relief has a catchy catchphrase that he always NEEDS to say.

In the case of the latter: Don't... Just don't...

As for the former, new scenarios for the same joke can lead into an even bigger joke. Bonus points if whatever the character's main joke is actually coincides with some sort of characterisation.

You can have a guy who gets angry all the time have to ACTUALLY go to anger management courses or maybe the guy who falls asleep just doesn't get any most the time due to insomnia. I know something so 'real' shouldn't be funny, but remember my earlier advice, something 'mundane' can ground the story.

To have a higher purpose than just the comedy happening itself, this sense of realism is required and can't be forgotten if you want to make stories that can have a higher impact on the audience.

Generally, you can go berserk with this kind of story since any joke is acceptable as long as they don't are not moral ambiguous and don't go at the expense of a certain group of your audience. I mean, 9/11 jokes may seem funny but we've already got to the point that the terrorism itself is not to be joked about.

On a side note: Why is it that Kyoto Animation burning down is a tragedy but people falling off buildings in 9/11 is funny? I remember a guy even adding cartoon sound to a video of people falling...

Sorry, back to the topic at hand. Your sense of humour is your own, but be sure to be sensitive to the people around you and not be a sadistic bully who takes pleasure in the suffering of others.

This is a story I worked on ages ago that has been refined and edited by adding foreshadowing to events while also simplifying the power system better than before. This story can be considered a prequel to An Adventure Beyond Greatness as it takes place years prior to the events of that story.

Short Synopsis:
After retiring from the battlefield, my life became empty and lifeless. The regrets of my past haunt me in my sleep. Then a change occurred, a King from another world summoned me to fight for his kingdom, but I died even before I could give him my answer. Now, after a fake God allowed me to reincarnate (albeit imperfectly) with my memories intact, into a world filled with magic and swords.

Long Synopsis:
This is about a flawed protagonist who only knew to rely on others and not socialise who gets a second chance to change himself in order to live the life he aimed for in his past life. The narrator isn’t exactly trustworthy since it is purely in his bias perspective while other perspectives given by others fill in the blanks that he either leaves out or twists to suit the situation.

The story itself can be considered a parody of Isekai’s classic tropes which are given a sense of reality as time goes by. As there exists no ‘Demon Lord’, there is also no black and white, only characters opinions and counter-opinions throughout the story.

2 weeks passed. Aariv was back in Patliputra. He had defeated the Chera and Pandya kingdom. He once again took away all the administrative rights from the royal families and just let them live with some personal guards. They weren't allowed to hire more than 5,000 men.

He was currently writing books. He knew that soon his kidnapped philosophers will arrive and will want to see what they were offered. He buried himself in work and wrote more than a thousand books. He had created a small paper making factory for this purpose. 

He also felt that the city was too cramped for making all the new workshops and factories. Hence he decided to start planning the city out. Also according to the history, the river would change its path in the future, submerging the whole city.

He needed to make cemented riverbanks to stop that from happening.

After writing books about every field that was withing the understanding of the current humans, he put them in a library. The library was quite big and a major part of it was underground. There were separate cabins for people to site and do their work without getting disturbed.

He also finished writing the constitution. Now he needed to promote it to people. Most of the population was illiterate so he needed to use Kautilya's men and people from local administration around the country to announce it to the public on a regular basis.

He hired stonemasons to make big stone edicts in hexagonal shape with their faces having the constitution carved on it. On the top of it was the Mauryan emblem, 4 lions sitting with their backs touching each other and their faces looking in 4 directions. The edicts were 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide. 

He put them in each town center or any other public gathering in the empire. The constitution laid down the framework demarcating fundamental political code, structure, procedures, powers, and duties of government institutions and sets out fundamental rights, directive principles, and the duties of citizens. It also stated the fundamental responsibilities of the elected government.

It promoted JUSTICE, LIBERTY, EQUALITY above all. He also wrote the book of law, It was a comprehensive book intended to cover all substantive aspects of criminal law.

He was going to bring democracy in some years but still he didn't abolish his own powers. He wrote a special case in which if the state fails to fulfill the fundamental duties and has become corrupt then Aariv Maurya has the right to dissolve the government and take things into his own hands and no one can remove this clause from the constitution by any means. He knew that in some years when he disappears from the public eye and starts acting from behind the scenes, the people will forget about this clause. 

He limited the special right to himself as he didn't trust all his descendants to be good people. There was bound to be a rotten apple every once in a while.

This was going smoothly but as more people found out about the constitution, trouble started to come.

Aariv had not mentioned castes or gender in the constitution, he had just used words like 'mankind or humanity'. The people from lower caste were very happy with this. This meant that they would not be treated differently but there existed some people from Brahmin and Kshatriya caste who disagreed with it as it decreased their status and authority.

Hee was sitting with Kautilya, Chandragupta, and Black in the private meeting room.

"What should we do about the possible riots?" Kautilya asked with a tense face.

"I am sure that there are some people who are trying to influence others and start riots. Just arrest them and trial them according to the book of law. We will increase the surveillance and guard patrol. It will probably take some years to let them accept all this." Aariv said.

There was no social media so it was not easy to organize a riot or a protest. He was not going to introduce internet and communication devices to the public till things aren't back to normal.

He left the meeting and looked for Surupa. He was going to give him books to let him study architecture and he was also going to hand him the job of extending the city. The first thing which was going to be made was the huge palace, the palace would not be just the residence of the emperor but also have administrative block, courts and stuff. It was going to an administrative hub.

He found Surupa in the library.

"Your highness, this is unbelievable... all this knowledge and to think that a single person wrote all this," Surupa said. He was overwhelmed by the knowledge Aariv had.

Aariv smiled and sat down on a chair. 

"This is just a small branch of a big tree. I know many more things, but current people cannot digest all that... that aside, I've come here to assign you a job," he said.

Surupa straightened his back and asked about the job.

"I want you to design a big palace, with courts, halls, and many offices. It will not just be the place where I will live but also the place from where the administration will work. The residential part should not be accessible to the other areas...." Aariv said, he also told him about his other requirements like he wanted a very big basement.

Aariv then got up and took some books with him and gave them to Surupa. These books consisted of knowledge about constructing big structures. He then introduced him to bricks, cement, concrete and how to make a strong foundation for a building.

he knew that he would need to do many new things to make the construction easy as he understood that the whole empire will heavily invest in building infrastructure in the future.

He also established the world university and started the first class. Anyone could enter the courses free of cost and they must complete the studies. The courses currently offered were very few and were mostly professional courses that would prepare people for new upcoming changes and jobs.

Aariv was going to introduce heavy machinery such as Excavators, Backhoe., Dragline Excavator, Bulldozers, Graders, Wheel Tractor Scraper, Trenchers, Loaders. But he was troubled because he didn't want them to run on fossil fuel. He needed to start working on his fusion reactor.

2 months passed and Aariv worked in his room, he made the frame of the fist-sized fusion reactor. Now he just needed to go out and try to get it struck by lightning to jump start it. Once it starts, then it would be self-sustainable. He had also selected 10 men with exceptional intelligence, they were all introduced by Kautilya. He taught them about the basics of electricity and how to lay lines and connect the whole city. 

He then ordered them to lay wires underground around the city. Juno was also continuously working on making things with the help of her matter manipulation. Now that everything was ready he just needed to go out and find a thunderstorm.

While he was working on a fusion reactor, things in the empire were drastically changing. Many arrests were made and people were punished. Most of the people understood that there was no going back now. They had no other choice but to accept the constitution, however, the discrimination was still rampant. Seeing that Aariv created the department of police. He reduced his army and changed them to the police.

He believed that the army should not aim for quantity but quality. Hence the new department was made, many new people were appointed, rule books were issued and finally the police started to do their jobs. The citizens were told that they could go and report any crime to a policeman and the police were obliged to help them.

All this required a lot of money but money was the least of his worries. 

The world college was also working efficiently but the college lacked infrastructure. He called Surupa to start designing universities, prisons, police stations, and hospitals. Aariv's main goal was to improve the living standard so that people could focus on other things than just surviving.

Surupa came to Aariv's office to show him the designs for the palace/office.

"Your highness, this is what I designed," he said and laid down the designs.

Aariv meaningfully looked at it and was quite pleased with it.  He knew that it was not possible to make a skyscraper yet as he lacked skilled labor so he had to make amends with what he got.

"Very good. I like it, you can start organizing workers," he said.

Aariv had already set up sites for making bricks, cement, and other necessary things for construction. 

He then headed out to start up his fusion reactor, after all, he still needed to make heavy machinery. 

He headed east, where the thunderstorms were ongoing. He ran as fast as possible. He could feel that the more he used his powers the stronger he would get but the rate of increase was very slow.

After running for a day he reached the place. The sky was covered with dark clouds and it was raining heavily. The deafening sound of thunder could be heard multiple times every second. He knew that his fusion reactor was very conductive in nature but still he needed to do something to make sure that lightning struck it.

He started throwing it in the air again and again, in the hope that it would attract lightning. He kept on doing that for a day and when Strom started to move away, he followed it.

After 3 days Aariv was starting to grow impatient, he screamed in irritation and jumped in the air with the reactor in his hand. Just then an eye-piercing light came close to Aariv, His last thought was.

"F*CK ME"

Then everything blacked out. The lightning struck Aariv. Although he had the strength of 100 men, he was still nothing compared to the mighty lightning. He wasn't seriously injured but the top layer of his skin had burnt down.

He fell down on the ground and groaned in pain. His body was constantly healing itself, draining his energy. After 3 hours, the pain finally stopped, leaving Aariv energyless. He knew what happened to him and started to channel natural energy from outside to his body, trying to recuperate the lost energy.

After half an hour he stood up, full of energy. He looked at his body. He felt significantly stronger than before. He had a feeling that he was near a breakthrough. 

Aariv cleaned the remaining bits of his clothes and searched for the fusion reactor. He looked around and finally noticed a blue light on the ground.

"HAHAHAHA... YES...YES"

Death! Such a scary concept. However, death would occur in the cardiovascular department on almost a daily basis. Death might arrive at any moment. After one week, Zhang Fan became numb and even accustomed to death.
Actually, this wasn't a good condition to be in. Lacking respect for death would make one a cold and distant person who lacked empathy and pity due to getting too accustomed to death. However, there was no helping it. China's population was far too large, with only so many doctors. What else could the doctors do? This was simply the natural order here.
Many people felt that doctors were cold and cruel. Actually, the doctors were simply helpless after experiencing far too much death. Doctors were just normal people too. They often had to carry a burden that other normal people wouldn't understand.
Humans' capacity for emotion was limited. Facing and witnessing death on a daily basis would naturally result in numbed emotions. No matter how much pain or sadness the patient's family experienced, that was just something normal to the doctor, just like eating and sleeping. This was the pity of being a doctor in China.
Zhang Fan had been confused and lost the first time that he faced death. Back then, he'd felt as if the sky had fallen. He often had bloody dreams during that time.
Doctors weren't capable of doing everything. It was quite often that a doctor would be helpless. There were many terminal illnesses where the patient couldn't be saved. However, the doctors would still have to face the patients and their families' pleading expressions.
Doctor was a profession that would cultivate the heart. Getting past this would mean that Zhang Fan was truly becoming a professional doctor, and that his personal path was maturing. He would no longer be an ordinary person or intern doctor. Whenever someone else talked to him, they would typically address him by the title of "Doctor".
To summarize, life in the cardiovascular department was tense, difficult, and carefully detailed.
The heart was the human body's version of an engine. Any minor accident involving the heart would be fatal. Cardiologists' nerves were always stretched to the highest tension as they were in charge of fixing this all-important engine.
It was normal for the cardiovascular department's emergency treatment operation rooms to be the most numerous and largest at any regular Class A hospital. The stocked medicine and medical equipment were also the most complete. It was common for there to be two or three medical teams simultaneously working to try and save patients near death.
Typical intern doctors would lack the mental fortitude to participate in emergency treatment. Those who wouldn't tremble when seeing such a scene were already considered passable. It wasn't like a doctor would naturally be hardened when first starting out.
Only by experiencing daily medical work and undergoing years of professional training would doctors become hardened and resolute. It was impossible for a doctor to have a long career without being hardened. If a doctor cried over every single patient that died under their care, well, they wouldn't need to go to work anymore, as they would be crying every single day.
Back when Zhang Fan was in his second year of medical school, his human anatomy dissection teacher had given the class of future doctors a warning: being a doctor was no pleasant job, and the future doctors would need to directly face death. For the first year, medical students would focus on learning the basics. Only in the second year would the medical students start learning actual practical skills.
The weather had been really hot that year. The human anatomy dissection room had been closed off for the entire summer when no classes were in session. The entire building was filled with the stench of formalin and rotten flesh.
A bunch of newbie medical students were all excited as they surrounded a corpse container. Even though it was very hot, there were still many medical students. More than 30 people were all gathered together for the sake of witnessing so-called human dissection for the first time.
The moment that the container was opened, a rotten smell washed over everyone. The corpse inside had already been cut open, revealing what was inside. It was unknown which student vomited first.
*Retch!* This student vomited up some tofu soup. The next student vomited up vegetables and spicy peppers. All the students started hurling everywhere, painting the floor with various colors. The floor became covered in milk, bread, noodles, eggs, and so on. Someone actually even ate stinky tofu for breakfast. That smell!
Obviously, more than 30 people all vomiting together in a closed room would create an incredibly sour stench.
The human anatomy dissection teacher had exited the room long ago. She knew that the first class would be the hardest, but it was also something they needed to experience. For the next two years, the human anatomy dissection class continued with the students getting accustomed to being with corpses on a daily basis.
By the end, the students became accustomed to corpses to the point where they could eat instant noodles right next to a corpse.
This wasn't about disrespecting a corpse. It simply couldn't be helped. If you couldn't get used to corpses, it would be impossible for you to be a doctor. Students who couldn't get used to corpses should quit so as not to waste their own and the patients' time.
In the cardiovascular department, Zhang Fan spent the majority of his time writing medical reports and performing electrocardiograms. There were far too many different types of medicine used in the cardiovascular department. Zhang Fan had yet to learn them all even after more than one week. He was only a normal person without the aid of his System.
The other two young female doctors who rotated together with Zhang Fan knew much more than he did. This was because they had been in internal medicine departments beforehand. The medical field was one where learning interconnected courses was especially important. Missing a single course would mean lack of knowledge, which might result in not understanding an illness and being unable to successfully treat a patient.
Shao Hua's mother had greatly improved recently. Zhang Fan's massages for her were highly effective. This evening, she came over to see Zhang Fan. She had been coming over every day for massage treatments while accompanied by her daughter Shao Hua. However, Shao Hua didn't come with her today. Zhang Fan felt slightly disappointed to see that Shao Hua's mother had come alone.
"Thank you, Doctor Zhang. I've improved so much recently. Look, I can even lift my arm without much pain." She then raised her arm to show Zhang Fan.
"That's good, then. You must be exercising at home, right? Just my massages alone won't have such a good effect."
"That's right. Every day, I've been practicing the wall-climbing exercises that you taught me." Shao Hua's mother then took out a box of medical patches. "Doctor Zhang, take a look at this. "Ma'am, you should continue your regular exercises and keep receiving massages from me. This medical patch shouldn't be of any use of you. How come Shao Hua didn't come with you today? Is she alright with letting you come here alone?"

If you had a stomachache, you were supposed to apply the patch on your stomach.
Many illnesses were simple illnesses that would automatically go away by themselves. However, some elderly people would believe that using two medical patches would help a cold to go away. Using a medical patch seemed far better than needing an injection or medication, and it seemed so effective!
One box of these medical patches cost a bit more than 100 yuan. Wasting a little money wasn't that important, but potentially worsening an illness because of believing in a scam medical patch would be no small matter. Even though China's medical field had many problems, China had still successfully improved its citizens' average lifespan from the thirties to the seventies in just several decades. This was all thanks to China's advances in the medical field[1]. 
The cardiovascular department was incredibly busy currently. It was now around the end of winter and the beginning of spring. This season was one where people would often catch colds or infections, which would then lead to a weakened heart. The patient rooms were completely filled. There were even many patients without beds who could only stand or lie in the hallways.
With so many patients, it would be easy for there to be a medical incident. Director Ren emphasized this on a daily basis in the departmental morning meetings. Everyone was also very tense because of this.
Ye Jing was having a hard time with the workload recently. If it weren't for the fact that Zhang Fan was helping her, she would have applied for vacation time already.
Even though everyone was being so careful, a major medical incident occurred with one of Ye Jing's patients. Ye Jing instantly collapsed.

The Wilde's celebrated the reconciliation between the sisters with a feast the following day, followed by a huge announcement. The results for class placements were out and all three children would be attending the same class. After Mr Wilde discussed it with both Jasper and Scarlet, they decided to slow down on their progress so that they could enjoy school life with Alex. Naturally, such a thing was kept from the Wilde princess who was overjoyed when she found out they would be attending the same class.

Claire gave them their uniforms and Alex was surprised when she received hers. "It's a skirt? I don't have to pretend to be a boy anymore?"

The head maid nodded. "The mistress said that with Scarlet and Jasper with you, there shouldn't be any problems. Besides, you have a very small class, and interaction with the other classes will be more of a common thing. You won't be made to interact much with any fixed classmate you don't wish to for extended periods of time. The special stream only takes in about ten students, but for us, they've made an exception and accepted a total of twelve students this year."

Scarlet was surprised. "Only twelve? That's a very small class..."

Claire smiled stiffly. "For an ordinary class, it would be. However, this is a special class. The school has to cater for twelve very special students, and that is a lot of resources that no ordinary school would not have the budget for. Joyville International is a school with many strong patrons and that is the only reason why it is possible. Your father has made a sizeable donation to make it possible for all three of you to get accepted."

Scarlet blushed when she heard the maid refer to Mr Wilde as her father. It was still difficult to get used to being the other Wilde daughter. Thankfully, Jasper's question pulled everyone's focus away from her.

"What will we be learning?"

Claire blinked. "There won't be any teaching involved, at least not much. Here is the timetable. For you to continue enjoying the benefits of the special class, you must contribute to the school's prestige. It can be through competitions, accreditations or accomplishments in the professional field. Apart from some structured classes required by the government and basic curriculums that you can opt for self-study, you can choose your area of specialisation."

Scarlet looked through the timetable. The hours looked exactly the same as any regular school and there wasn't a lot of differences. Classes started at eight in the morning, but it wasn't a daily thing. Scarlet soon realised that the timetable had many shaded out slots.

"Why are there huge periods of blanks?" she asked.

Claire handed out another printout with a list this time. "That is what you will have to decide what to do. The list contains the number of vacant rooms you can apply for booking as well as a schedule of teachers you can request for. The school allows you to make the bookings from a week prior to one semester prior. Of course, the confirmation of a venue is subjected to changes from the principal."

Scarlet looked through the list and thought about it. The computer lab looked mostly empty and so did the music room in the morning.

"Can I bring my laptop to school?" she asked. Claire nodded. 

"We have permission from the principal. You will be given the school Wi-Fi's password to bring it along to work on your novel and research."

Jasper flipped the printout and saw a list of clubs. "What's this?"

Claire calmly explained the concept of clubs and Alex pointed out that they couldn't join them after school because they had to help Mr Wilde out at the company as interns.

"Don't worry, Mr Wilde has made it possible so that you work around the timetable. As long as you can commit two afternoons, the rest can be rescheduled."

Scarlet was pleased to know that and looked through the list of clubs, hoping to find one that would help her with writing. Sadly, there weren't any clubs close to what Scarlet wanted. The mass media club was just about it but the blogger wasn't interested in writing story scripts for plays and films. Meanwhile, Alex and Jasper had already shortlisted the clubs they were interested in. Claire was helping them fill in the club application forms while Scarlet frowned over the lack of choices.

"Is there something wrong?" Tina asked. The blogger looked at the soft-spoken motherly maid and sighed.

"The school has a hundred and seventeen clubs or extracurricular activities but there isn't anything I find interesting..."

Claire overheard it and blinked. "What is it that you're looking for, Scarlet?"

The blogger explained that she was looking for something that could help her with the novel she was working on.

The head maid listened and nodded. It isn't something the school could help Scarlet with. Unlike Jasper and Alex's interest, Scarlet required more professional help.

"Understood, I'll see what can be done about it. In the meantime, you should plan the classes you would like to take and the subjects you want to study for the tests."

The children looked through the curriculum and decided that they would choose some fixed lessons to take together while going to separate electives. Jasper chose to take extra math and business courses while Alex opted for art and design classes. Scarlet looked through the list and chose all three available electives - history, geography, and literature. The girls decided to take home economics for one term to try it out while Jasper decided to go for the ten-week programming class for beginners.

Satisfied with their choices, they returned the filled up form to Claire who entered it into the computer for submission. At the same time, the head maid sent an update text to the group chat, reporting the results. 

Benjamin was the first to see the text. He suggested engaging a private tutor to teach Scarlet what she wanted to learn at home after school instead of going for extracurricular classes. Jenna saw the lawyer's suggestion and agreed. However, Mrs Wilde had a different idea.

Ice Queen: | What do you think about a governess? |

Jenna was sceptical.

Lady Butler: | Where would we find such a governess, milady? Not all governesses are apt novelists. |

Married To Work: | Don't worry, I think I know just the person for the job even if she's a little weird. This is a colleague of mine who was recently married and left her day job as a lawyer... She's working freelance as an editor and helping writers to self-publish. |

Benjamin wanted to sigh at Wilmer's choice of nickname. When the man wasn't working, he was a hopeless romantic with a severe daughter-complex.

Mrs Wilde had no objections to it and Mr Wilde set a time so that he could interview the lady personally.

Claire looked at the group chat and decided that it was better not to reply. She just wished that the person Benjamin spoke of could help heal Scarlet's heart as well and not just tutor her.
