*Eldovian Era 1713, 15th day of the 7th month*

Kit sighed as put down the Light Tool, flexing his fingers and massaging his hand. He'd just finished the last charm of an order that had 100 healing charms for the Knight Academy in Barday. And that was only the small ones. He turned around to look at Olly's table, not surprised that he had long ago finished the 50 medium healing charms and the 25 large healing charms. He seemed to be working on the regular stock, having placed the Knight Academy charms to the side in a large crate. Kit stood, stretching his arms as he took steps over the the crate and dragged it to the side of his own table before he proceeded to sweep the small charms into the crate with the others, counting as he went to make sure the number was right.
"Is there another order?" asked Olly, noticing that Kit had finished carving.
Kit indicated to the order book to the side and Olly rose to look at it, and read the next order aloud, "Five Large Lock sets and ten truth charms, the Sais Bank order".
Kit nodded, "Alright, you get started, I'll take this out to the packing room. Give me the book and I'll go see if any more have come in".
Olly put the book beside Kit then walked over to the larger crates to the side full of Evanine.
Kit used his Shadows to lift the crate. He'd been getting better at making his shadows solid ever since Rassa had taught him how. The construction of this place had helped significantly considering that most of the heavy lifting was done by Kit.
Kit walked through the tunnels, bypassing the artisan room to go to the packing room. The workers there busily handled the previous orders, ensuring that the charms, both on their own and worked with metals or leather, were stored appropriately for travel and presentation.
"Master Kit," the manager of the packing house, Wilma, noticed his presence and rushed over, a warm smile on her face despite her large figure.
Kit placed the crate at the end of the line as she approached smiling back, "The Knight Academy Order. Let us know if we missed any, there were quite a few healing charms".
"Of course, though I'm sure its perfect as always, Master Kit," Wilma smiled, she'd brought with her a clipboard which she knew was a replica of Kit's Order book and Kit stood with her as he crossed a line through the Academy order and she ticked beside it to indicate the order was completed and ready for packing.
"Any new orders coming through?" asked Kit.
"We have received some, yes, the specifics are on my desk," Wilma said as she began to lead Kit over. Kit followed, the staff nodding respectfully as he passed them. Kit held no actual position at the Mine apart from the Charm Craftsman. But the fact that he was a Magician, and that he was one of only two Craftsman in the world, had earned him an ocean full of respect despite being only 13. Olly as well, though everyone understood that out of the two craftsman, Kit was far more personable.
"Here we are," Wilma stated as she passed Kit the order form, "And this came as well for you".
Wilma passed him a letter that was stamped with the Crescent Moon inside a Full Moon. The Moonshadow Seal. Getting a letter from Iah wasn't unheard of. He usually got one every week that he replied to, but getting one with the Moonshadow Seal indicated something substantially more serious.
"Can I have a minute, Wilma?" asked Kit as he saw the letter.
"Of course," Wilma nodded, "I'll do a round of the warehouse and come back".
Kit nodded as she walked off, then he cracked the seal.
The letter had two notes in it. The first was a substantial order, one of the largest they had received so far, and required a talk with the artisans so that Iah could give a proper quote and time for the order to be completed. The second note looked as if it had been composed in a rush. It was quick and to the point.
'Jane's Magician Team has sensed the Inktress heading north from Port Cresh. The Pavilion has been warned ahead of time. You and Olly should be careful'.
Kit sighed. Even without being told he somehow knew it had been coming. Ishta had been too quiet for too long considering their success. Kit folded the letter then waved over to Wilma. He spent ten minutes going over the new orders with her and ensuring their lists were the same before Kit walked towards the Artisan Warehouse with the order form and the letter in hand.
There he spent an hour talking with the Artisans about the large order, and eventually decided on 7 gold and 84 silver for each of the 1,000 armour breast plates with gold inlaid crests. With the 55g for the inlaid protection and healing charms on each plate, it brought the total to quote to 62,840 gold. He then walked back to the Charm warehouse were Olly had pretty much finished the Sais Order.
Kit sat down opposite him and waited for him to finish in silence. Olly had barely placed down the Light Tool when he spoke before Kit could.
"The Inktress is coming," Olly said.
Kit just nodded in the silence. Olly smiled, "The Sais Order is done, what's next?"
"You're not even a little concerned?" asksed Kit, "What if she finds the tunnels?"
It was how no one had been able to trace the orders back to the mine and only to the Pavilion. Below the Pavilion and known only to the Knights who lived and worked there as well as the owner, was a Labyrinth-like network of tunnels that spanned for leagues in every direction. They'd originally been used as escape routes, but with the charm business, Olly had suggested using them for sneaking the charms into the pavilion so that no one would know where they came from. It had worked better than expected, most people believed that the charms were coming from the Pavilion itself.
"The Mist is never concerned," said Olly, "So why should I be?"
"The Mist is the Mist," Kit argued, "You are Olly. What do you think?"
Olly just smiled, "That the Mist will tell me if I should be concerned".
Kit rolled his eyes, then pointed to the next order in his open book, "One last one before you start dealing with the ones for the next week. I'll be back in a bit, I've got to write a reply to Iah".
Olly just nodded, busying himself with packing away the last order in the crate and moving onto the next.

After recuperating for two days, Nathan finally decided to go out. 

Of course, his body hasn't completely recovered yet. It was only about 80-90%. However, he wanted to level up like crazy.

Well, aside from that, he also wanted to take a bath. The thing is, his scalp was itchy as fuck.

Although he had water, the bottled waters he had were only enough to drink so he had no choice but to venture out.

He was outside of the apartment building and was currently invisible.

His long hair was tied in a ponytail and he still had his goatee. 

He was wearing a black shirt, a knife shoulder holster for his [Grade D] Short Dagger, grey jeans, [Grade D] Gloves, a watch on his left wrist, boots, and a couple of meters of rope coiled together on his left side. He also had a large leather fanny pack on his waist. Inside it was mini binoculars, a small flashlight, a lighter, and an iPod. 

He checked his watch. It was 8:00 am.

"System," he said.

His status chart appeared before him.

<Author's note: I decided to add the equipment on the status chart because I was getting annoyed about having to go back to the previous chapters to check the equipment. I'm already having a headache in dealing with the exp points, durability, and potions. Also, I'm adding durability to the gloves as well. Sorry, I totally forgot to address its durability on chapter 15. In fact, I only realized this when I was writing chapter 25 last night.>

He sighed and said, "Such cute stats. System off."

He pulled out his dagger and headed to the group of zombies across the street.

He approached one zombie that was far away from the group. 

When he was 5 meters away from the zombie, the system informed him that it was a level 5 zombie, giving him quite a pleasant surprise.

'Level 5? Lucky~' His eyes shined.

He went behind the zombie. The zombie was around 2 meters (6'5") tall. 

However, with Nathan's height at 6ft, he was still able to wrap his left arm around the tall zombie's neck, immediately losing his invisibility. He then quickly started stabbing the side of the zombie's head with his Short Dagger on his right hand.

Given that he was level 6 and the zombie was level 5, it gave him 25% experience points.  

He went to another zombie that was far away from the group. Again, it was another level 5 zombie and was around 2 meters tall as well.

'Am I really this lucky? Hehe~'

Although he found it a little strange to find another level 5 zombie, he didn't bother about it at all and just thought that he was just extremely lucky to encounter another one.

He did the same killing technique: go behind, warp neck and then stab like crazy.

'I'm now 76.5625%. I hope I would be lucky to find another level 5. Hehe~' he scratched his nose when he said that.

'But damn… This killing method is way too disgusting,' he thought.

But does he have any choice given his weapon? It was the safest and quickest method he could only think of.

Up ahead, there were two zombies.

When he was 5 meters away from them, he was surprised because they were all level 5 and tall as well!

'Wait… What's going on? Don't tell me all the zombies are now level 5? This…'

He looked at the zombies and started to think about the situation. He also noticed another thing – their height.

Nathan was 6ft tall and most of the people in the city he lives in were not tall, especially the women. 

It's not that he was looking down on short people or anything, but it's not common to see people around 2 meters tall unless you're in a sporting event or whatever event it is that requires tall people. However, right now, the zombies he had encountered so far have been tall, featuring a height of around 2 meters.

'Where are the short people?!' he shouted inside his heart.

He immediately tried to look for other zombies to check their heights and levels.

After looking a few minutes of running around checking on zombies, he found out they were all level 5 and around 2 meters tall. Even the children who turned into zombies were tall.

How did he know they were children? Well, based on the clothes that they were wearing which were way too small for their body, it was easy to tell – some were even naked.

He was standing in the middle of the street and thought, 'Is this perhaps evolution? Will they eventually become like those 3m-tall skinless zombies?' his expression darkened.

Just thinking about the D1 zombie he fought a few days ago made his knees go weak. He was very aware of how strong they were. He saw how Derek fought it. He himself even experienced first-hand the strength of the D1. He also remembered that even though it took two shells of a grenade launcher while injured, it still didn't die.

If he ever gets to meet one right now, all he can do is escape and never look back. 

'Time to level up like crazy,' he said to himself as he looked at the level 5 zombies around him and then started killing them one by one.

A man was running towards two zombies. He had a [Grade D] Scimitar on one right hand and a [Grade D] Short Dagger on the left.

Whoosh!

Whoosh!

Two zombie heads fell off and rolled on the floor. One of the zombies dropped a [White Treasure chest].

The man with a scimitar on his right hand and short dagger on his left looked at the [White Treasure Chest] and prayed, 'Please don't be a skill book, please don't be a skill book, please don't be a skill book…'

Of course, this man was Nathan. 

After hunting like crazy for more than 4 hours, he killed 60 level 5 zombies and was now level 10. Also, with the rise of his vitality, his recovery seemed to speed up as well, making him feel rather good.

'System.'

'System off.'

He bent down and opened the chest.

It was a [Grade D] Repair Kit.

This was his third Repair Kit. He already used the two earlier for his weapons. 
As for the other items he found, there was one [Small Healing Potion], a [Waterball] skill book, a [Grade D] Boots that gives +3 to agility, and the [Grade D] Scimitar which he was holding on his right hand.

He didn't use the Repair Kit right away. He decided to only use it once his Scimitar reaches 2/12. 

Regarding the [Waterball] skill book, he didn't bother to pick it up because he had no extra space and wasn't interested in it. Well, he could collect and sell them, right? Unfortunately, he was too lazy. 

The reason why he chose to bring a fanny pack instead of a backpack was because he wanted to focus on leveling up like crazy today. He needed to be light as fuck. And even if he does find an interesting item that's too heavy to carry around, he would hide it in a corner and come back to pick it once he's done. 

With the zombies around, who would have the time to search for hidden treasures? Unless that person has a skill to locate treasures or has crazy [Plot Luck], the probability of anyone finding it was very, very low.

'Time to grab lunch,' he thought.

After running around and killing for more than 4 hours, he was really hungry and thirsty. As for taking a bath, he decided to deal with it afterward. It was still 12:30 pm.

"I am a Chosen One! I refuse to bow down to society! Society must bow down to me!" 


Nathan is your average 24-year old man. Just like everyone else, he experienced both pain and happiness in his life which shaped him into the man who he is. 


One day, God unleashed a zombie apocalypse and gave humanity the System that allows them to level-up, forever changing the world. And among the humans, there are beings called Chosen Ones who are slightly better off than the average humans. 


Follow the journey of a man who slowly descends into madness as he survives in a zombie apocalypse and rises to power.

The next day. Aser had gotten over the embarrassment from the weird book, and was hoping Julia had as well. The sun was peeking through the clouds as the morning dew scattered around the field. The slight wintry breeze made him hug his coat tighter around him. 

Aser wanted to walk around the grounds for a bit instead of staying cooped inside. It was only two more weeks for school to start, and he needed to buy the books he needed for class. Even though he read so many of them in the library, the school would still require you to bring your own to lessons. Perhaps they would allow a student to borrow the texts from the library for a while, but they would eventually have to get their own copies. 

He remembered Julia telling him about this bookstore close to the school grounds that had a lot of interesting materials as well as the ones they needed for class. Since he hadn't really explored the city by himself, Aser decided to check the store to see if he could find anything of interest. 

Heading out of the large white-gold gates, the boy walked south until he neared a street lined with different stores. The merchants in Shelfield Coast City got most of their materials through imports, while the exports consisted of aquatic goods such as fish and clams as well as dark iron from the underground mines. Due to the island's proximity to the Western Continent, the city had a thriving navy and merchant economy. 

Aser kept walking until he saw a small shop with the sign "Sam's Curious Literature". The building seemed to meld with the others in the area, and seemed well taken care of. The windows gave a view to the insides of the shop, filled with shelves and popular books on display. There were a few people in there already, and it seemed to be relatively prosperous.

Stepping inside, the air around him turned much warmer, allowing him to loosen the tight coat. Glancing around the place, Aser decided to explore a bit. There were a few bookshelves in the front of the store filled with tomes of various different titles and subjects, as well as a resting area for anyone that wanted to peruse them before buying. He noticed there was a young man sitting behind the counter absorbed in playing with a small metal instrument. If he remembered right, it was called a harmonica, a favorite among the sailors and natives of the city. 

Aser noticed there was a small pile of older and shabbier books near the back of the store as well. Finding nothing too interesting among the bookshelf, he decided to check out the pile. Flipping through them, he saw that most of these were either torn or worn out. At the moment he thought there was nothing much interesting, he saw a small black book about the size of his palm. It didn't have any titles, and the cover seemed to be made from shark leather. 

Most leather used were processed or cow leather, or even papyrus bound, but shark leather was very uncommon for books of this size. Shark leather was known to be very durable but also highly expensive, and most would use it for precious tomes or scrolls for binding. Finding one that was used as a cover seemed very rare to Aser. 

Flipping through the little book, he saw that the pages were empty. Deciding to return it, he put it down and was about to go over to the counter to get his school books. Recently, Aser had also gotten into the habit of activating Mind's Eye before speaking to someone to get better at reading their emotions, as suggested by Ashes, so he enabled the skill. Briefly glancing back to the pile, Aser noticed that there was a slight surge of Essence Particles from the black book. Curious, he picked it back up and was surprised to see there were words there now. 

The language it was written in seemed very weird to him. It was in a form of symbolic association, with lines and circles. Grabbing the book, he headed to the counter to get the others and left the store. The boy behind the counter seemed curious as to why Aser wanted to buy a blank book, but still charged him only 10 Copper Notes for it.

Back at the Academy's Library, Aser arranged his study materials in one of the bookshelves in the study room, and sat down to inspect the black book. He noticed that there was a symbol on the front of the book as well. 

"Ashes, can you understand what language this is?"
[It seems to be similar to the Baltish text from the Setting Sun Islands, but more ancient.]
"Can you see if you can read the Essence History and translate it?"
[Sure. Translation in progress.]

Aser left the translation to Ashes while he sat down and started to cultivate before lunch. These days he preferred to cultivate before lunch, as Julia was usually around afterwards so it wasn't acceptable for him to just leave his guest alone while he cultivated. After 5 hours, Aser woke up with a notification from Ashes.

[Aser, I was able to decipher some of the words, but I've figured out the title of the book. It's a single word, and from my understanding after translation, it means "Starlight"]

"Starlight? That seems special."

In fact, Aser was confused as to why he was the only able to see the essence particles from the book. He was sure that there were plenty of other people that can detect essence particles, maybe not as clearly as him, but they would still be able to detect them from this book. 

"Could it be due to my inherited blessing?!", he thought excitedly! Ever since he unlocked his system and saw his passives, he had wondered what the blessing was for and why it was related to stars. He never felt any particular connection to the night sky. Sure, he liked looking at it, but no other feelings. Realizing that he could maybe find a way to improve his blessing, Aser excitedly asked to translate the rest of the text to him.

Beasts had unlocked their System during the Ancient Era, and were once the rulers of the world. A catastrophe had caused them all to go into slumber, ushering in the Venture era where humanity started leaving their settlements to explore. As civilization progressed and tensions rose, humanity fought with themselves for the large swathes of territory. Near the end of the Conquer era, the beasts started awakening from their slumber and pushed humanity to the brink of destruction. Through efforts from humanity's top leaders, the system was unlocked for man, and thus began the era of Enlightenment. 

The goal of everyone in this era is to get enlightened, to seek Ascension. Now every child, every family, every influence seek to be an Ascended like the heroes of their world. 

Aser, an Unknown child raised in an orphanage in the Southern Seas. Like others, on his 7th birthday, the system had awakened in his mind, but he realizes he's special. As he explores the mysteries of the System, our protagonist strives to excel, to prove his worth in the world of Gigantis, to find his parents and to figure out the path to Ascension.

As the sunlight stream gently, warm autumn wind blowing, and the vivid cherry blossoms flutter on this day, a young man dressed in simple white shirt and blue jean is walking on a street surrounded in both side by cherry trees reading the latest manga chapter of 'One Piece'.
   
He is an average man; not handsome or not bad-looking with short black hairstyle as David Beckham, not too thick eyebrow with sharp eyes. His name is Sky Embra, an IT manager with decent pay who live alone in an apartment.
Closing the book and sitting on the nearby bench, he muttered,


"Man, that was epic.. journey of Roger and Oden.. Laugh Tale huh?.. I really want to know why you would say like that? Well, that's not my place to ask anyway... Arr...a I also want to go on adventure.. Hm ? What is that? "


He just finished reading the manga and muttering but he suddenly stopped and looked beside him.
"Is it always been here? Or  Did someone forget? Hmm.. there is no one here..whatever, let's hand it over to the police.."


What he saw is a book with a little dusty leather cover,  rope wrapped around it. So, you can say that it is a book, no, a diary at that. On the leather cover is a symbol he hadn't seen it before. He exclaims his thoughts out loud,


"What a gorgeous symbol!  And it is good to hold too. It must've been really expensive . Well, come let's get you to the police station.. so, your owner can get you.."


He held the diary book, got up and was about to go but, the rope wrapping around the diary suddenly become undone and slip away from his hand and open to a page.
"Oya, silly me.." Shaking head, as he is about to get the diary, he noticed the question on the page asking, "If you would choose between getting rich in your current life or go to adventure as you just wished, what would you choose?"


"Huh? Obviously I would go on adventure.. who would want to stay in this life where no one give a shit about what is happening to you? wait a minute.. why do I even answer to a book? Hah... nice prank Mr.nobody ... Whatever.."


He picks up the diary, warp the rope and go to the nearest police station and give the book to L&F Dept.(Lost and found department).
The sun is getting low and he went back to his apartment before buying foods for dinner.


The apartment is a simple one with 1 living room, 2 bedrooms, 1 kitchen and 1 bathroom.
He showered, had simple dinner and read a manga on the sofa with a cup of green tea.
As he is about to turn a page, the electricity go out.. and he can't see anything suddenly..


"Hmm.. the landlady did not tell me electricity will go out tonight.. I hope it is not long. "


Saying he walks up to the window and is about to open the curtain to let the moonlight in. But then, he heard a sound, more specifically a sound like a bird flapping it's wings. He turns back and sees something or rather someone unbelievably beautiful with white wings....

Crow threw his head up. His questioning gaze towards Sunders was filled with coldness.
"What are you implying?" asked Crow as he used the same foreign accent.
"Nothing really. I only want to tell you one thing. Smuggling yourself to the wizarding world is no small matter. Oh, also, you shouldn't trust wizards' promises too easily." 
With that, Sunders looked at Sliv again.
"'Sorcerer of Big Fish' Sliv. Next time we meet each other, I hope you bring a Residential Permit for Crow. Otherwise, you will be meeting someone else instead, the law enforcers from Supreme Cult."
Next, Flora threw her scroll in the air under Sliv's shocked stare.
A strange-shaped rupture appeared in front of them.

Sliv directed an angered look towards Crow.

Sliv extended his spiritual feeler as well. There were no space ripples around. 
Damn it! Then how did they escape?! A replacement spell? Can't be. There weren't spell ripples either.
Sliv almost went mad. He was not planning to let Sunders live at all. He already ordered the wizards from Song of the Deep to prepare to keep Sunders here forever no matter what the man chose. Otherwise, they would face terrible consequences.
Retaliation from Sunders or Brute Cavern was another thing. The biggest problem was Crow's identity.
A wild smuggler from another plane was not a big deal, but an extremely power smuggler was. If the Supreme Cult accused Sliv of "exposing wizardry secrets" because of Crow, he would be in real trouble. 
However, just by revealing secret would not help Crow get into the wizarding world if he did not have a guide.

If the Supreme Cult investigated him, his best bet would be claiming that he only made a deal with Crow around the potions. However, if something went wrong, the cult could accuse him of revealing secrets about alchemy potions to a smuggler from another world. That would be disastrous!
Damn it all! 
Sliv clenched his fists with nowhere to vent his anger.
His bold move did not earn him anything besides grudge from Sunders. To prevent being investigated by the Supreme Cult, he must do something about Crow as well. Everything went wrong!
What Sliv was not expecting was that something even worse was waiting for him.

The cloud whale glided leisurely under the thunderclouds.
After being showered by the lightning bolts several days ago, the ranch outside was in a bad shape. Thank goodness the weather turned better. The thunderclouds were still there, but the lightning grew weaker.
Angor moved back to his own small tent.

Starting from the third bookshelf were books about formal wizards. The third shelf was mostly aged leather books. Most of the leather covers were cracked. The book Initial Glory which recorded the creation of the very first meditation method was also here.
The fourth held more books about wizards, but there were more biographies and tips on wizard training than spell books. The fifth to the tenth shelf were most attractive for Angor. There were many miscellaneous arts, such as Drawing Spell Patterns, Basic Alchemy, Material Extraction, Illustration Manual for Monsters in Abyss Plane… They were only elementary books though. Sunders' book room did not contain anything about in-depth content.
Angor guessed that Sunders arranged the books before letting him in, to make him find his own path by reading about various knowledge.

William Hughes had a pretty good life, he thought. He had every material possession he could ever want, he had gotten top marks in all his classes, maintained good friendships, and spent the majority of his time being happy. He was even able to play video games in his spare time. More recently he'd gotten into Cambridge University for theology, and in the past week he'd been given a scholarship and accepted into the Gentleman's Order of the Coffee-Stained Page. Sure, there were times he broke down and said to himself that he had no future, that he was the worst man he'd ever heard of, but everyone had those moments, right?
The Order was a group of scholars who ran the university's library, and received generous grants for their research. Historically they were known as the mystical Scholar's Guild, who were able to find books no-one had ever heard of, and were even believed to have been demon-slayers of some kind. It was a huge honour to be accepted into their hallowed ranks. 
It had been a difficult choice for Will to start a theology class in the Divinity Faculty on account of his existing faith being in Wicca, but his thirst for knowledge had led him to the area he knew least about, and he'd been to Cambridge before and found a good amount of occult believers, as well as one great occult shop. 
He certainly didn't regret his decision once he received the gargantuan sum from his scholarship and the Order, and having the keys to the library together with a vote for their purchases was a great boon also. Today he was perusing the shelves for a copy of the Malleus Maleficarum. He wished it wasn't included on the syllabus - it was a truly vile and ignorant depiction of witchcraft from a medieval Christian perspective - he had a mind to show his lecturers the Grimoire of Turiel just to set them straight on the true Christian thoughts on magic. 
He picked up the Maleficarum, but another book on the same shelf caught his eye. 'Magic and Sorcery for the Novice Guild Member'. The binding looked ancient, yet still sturdy. The title was embossed in gold lettering and when he picked it out, the cover was hand-painted with a variety of symbols - many of which Will knew, but some were a mystery. He decided to take the book out, if only to research the book itself. The "Guild" it was referring to seemed likely to be the Scholar's Guild that was the foundation of the Order. 
He resolved to question the president later. Meanwhile he took the two books to the counter and signed them out.
"Hey, watcha got there, Will?" Will's closest friend in the Order had just entered the library.
"Something rather interesting, James. I had to get the Maleficarum for my class, but I found this thing on the same shelf. I believe it's been here since before the Order."
"That's not so special. Let me take a look." He walked over to where will was standing and suddenly rushed into action, flipping through pages frantically, totally absorbed.
"This is incredible. From the theories detailed in here, it actually looks like magic might be possible. Like Harry Potter style magic. It says you need a Grimoire though. Some kind of decorated tool, by the looks of it. Or maybe a book, it does mention pages."
"You don't know what a Grimoire is? It is a book, specifically a book that details all of its owner's spells. What, does it have instructions for making one?"
"Yeah, it's really in-depth. This is complicated. There's a lot of uhhhh... Ingredients?"
"Oh? Like what?"
"Apart from the obvious, seems like a load of spices and herbs. They're supposed to stimulate the brain in different ways to help you focus on different aspects of a spell."
"I've never heard of using them in a Grimoire, but herbs and spices are used in similar ways in Wiccan magic too. I'd be interested to see what could turn that into 'Harry Potter magic' as you called it." They said their goodbyes and Will carried the books back to his dorm. He still had some daylight left, so he made a note of everything he would need for the Grimoire and set out buying them. By the time he got to the occult shop, he already had everything he would need for the book itself: wood, resin, papyrus and string. He'd wanted to get velum as mentioned in the instructions, but it was hard to source and frowned upon in the modern day, so he settled for a high quality Egyptian papyrus instead of cheap paper. He knew that ingredients of spells in Wicca were often interchangeable so long as they had the same properties, so he hoped it would be as acceptable with this type of magic. He found the rest of what he needed very quickly, but he could never leave this shop without buying more than he'd intended, so he picked up a deck of tarot cards and a crystal pendulum too. Thanking the owner, he returned to his dorm and began work on his Grimoire.
"Okay, so we have sage, cumin, cinnamon, turmeric and mugwort. That's a pretty basic formula for beginners, and besides the sage, they all have strong and distinct smells. I won't change the recipe for the moment, but it's worth noting that I might be able to expand my repertoire by adding more properties in scent-based ingredients." He had some old leather lying around, so once he'd applied the resin design to the ash wood cover and bound the pages to it, he carefully chased the leather onto the cover. Following this, he copied the symbols and spells meticulously from the book. The final step in the instructions was to cast a spell using symbols on the cover of the book, to bind it to the owner. 
He hurriedly grabbed his paints and brushes, knocking over his coffee table on the way. Once he'd finished inscribing the symbols, he recited the suggested incantation. The book glowed with a soft white light. The light gradually spread across Will's vision, and when it faded he realised his eyes had closed. Opening them, he jumped and slammed into his back wall. A creature was floating above the Grimoire with jagged wings and a sharp, toothy grin. Will stood up and flattened himself against the wall in fear.
"What are you?" He cried.
"Hahaha. My name is Angelo. I am a fairy demon bound to you by this book. If I'm honest, I've been following you for a while because your soul looks tasty. If I had known you would be building a Grimoire today I would have taken it already." He had an untrustworthy glint in his eyes. 
"Well, I'm grateful you didn't, but what's stopping you from taking it now?"
"Is it not obvious? The Grimoire. When you completed it, you bound me to you. If you get hurt, the book gets damaged, and if the book gets damaged, we both get hurt. I cannot take your soul because it would kill me. I have no choice but to protect you now."
"Okay, so what do I do now? Can I just cast spells now, do I need to sleep on it, is there a vow I need to take?"
"As a matter of fact, there is. Turn the page, it should be there." Will obeyed, and found that the page was largely empty, aside from one short paragraph. The demon chanted with him. 
"I vow to protect the people in all my power. I vow to improve myself so that my enemies may never best me. I vow to learn and to teach so that I may have a strong force to defend my city and my country. Lastly, as we live by the Book now, so do we die by the Book. This is the Scholar's Pledge belonging to the Magus Guilds."
