Nicholas's pov :

waking up as usual I took a shower at 6 thirty, I wore my black Armani suit with a white shirt underneath it with my Rolex watch and  a pair of black shoes ,I combed my hair backwards and walked toward my kitchen, to eat my breakfast.

"good morning Nicholas" Joana my housekeeper greeted me with a smile on her face, Joana is 40 years old woman , she and her husband have been both working for me for almost 8 years since I moved to live alone , her husband mark is 43 years old, he was my chauffer for a year but after a while I thought it would be easier to have a young chauffer who can keep up with my crazy schedule, so I asked mark to support his wife with taking care of my mansion(like doing gardening work and buying grocery and all this kind of stuff), after a year I got used to having them around that I treat them like family now.   

"good morning Joana I will have my breakfast in the dining room today , and you don't have to  prepare dinner today, I will be having it with Jason out "

" okay darling but make sure you don't skip lunch or dinner, ah and ben is waiting outside after you finish "

"okay thank you Joana "

after eating my breakfast , I went outside towards my black Lamborghini to find ben waiting for me while opining the back door. 

"good morning sir"  

" morning ben" 

ben is my chauffer\bodyguard he is been working for me for almost 7 years now , so he is one of the people that I actually trust , ben is the same age as me he is 29 years old, he is not just a employee, he is a good friend to.

after getting in the backseat and ben walked towards the driver seat, I looked at my watch it was a bit after 7

" the usual ben "

"yes sir , right away "

after 20 minutes or so I reached  t hospital walking towards the elevator I saw a nurse calling for me at first I wanted to ignore her , hoping she would go away , but she as quit presisitent 

"Mr. royal , I was thinking maybe you would like to have a cup of coffee with me sometime ?"

who the hell is she ? and is a nurse allowed to work in this kind of outfit she looks like a sluty whore for god sake, I tried my best to ignore her with a cold face , and the moment the elevators doors opened I walked in ignoring her existence , I don't want anyone to ruin my mood first thing in the morning , I still have a long day to go, reaching the vip floor , I walked toward room 317 , to find doctor mike making his rounds .

"good morning MR. royal, your here as usual "

"good morning doctor, how is she? any changes ?"

"sadly no , nothing has changed , she has been in a coma for almost 7 years , her body has gotten a lot weaker lately , but there is nothing much we can do , as always I am really sorry sir "

"thank you" I said coldly and walked to ward the room , in the middle of the room on big king sized bed laid my only family , my everything , my mother , how I wish I can bring her back , and hear her beautiful soothing voice once again but I cant , she has been sleeping like this for years and she wont wake up , it's been 7 years since that day , since the day my father died , and my mother decided to sleep her pain away leaving me all alone .

i left the hospital at 8 thirty and i went to the company, as usual the moment I went in , everyone started to focus in their work like crazy while some of the higher ups started to great me , I rode private elevator to my office 

"good morning sir" joseph greeted me politely  " sir, Eva queens has already arrived since an hour ago and she is in her office " 

when joseph was talking about Eva , i couldn't help but think about her again, the beautiful girl who took my breath away, for a reason i couldn't help but think about her lately, she looks a bit familiar, i don't know how, but i liked her a lot , she was smart and beautiful and god she had an amazing body, she was one of the not so many people who don't get intimated by my cold demeanor and that made me even more curios about her , I walked toward her office and the view that greeted me made my blood boil .

here she was as beautiful as i saw her the first time she stood in the middle of pile of papers on the floor , she was barefoot and she had her hair in a bun or more like she was in the process of making it in a bun , but what took my breath away was the white skin underneath her pale pink blouse  

"good morning Eva , would you like to explain what this mess is ?" flustered she hurriedly tided her blues and wore her heels 

"good morning sir , i am really sorry for the mess , but it seems like the last secretary had a lot of issues of keeping these files in place "

"yeah, anyway come to my office in a couple of minutes , oh and eva welcome to the company "

" right away sir , and thank you "

 and with that I went toward my office with a small smile plastered on my face, oh things might get a bit more fun now .

hey guys, well today i thought of writing a bit more about Nicholas and his story , i hope you like it and i will be updating again soon ... please forgive me for any grammar mistakes since English isn't my first language , and i will be more than happy if you point them out for me actually

with one leg she hit the man on his head leaving him unconscious ... she pulled the little girl to her lab and made sure to protect her no matter what happened 
but all of a sudden the air around her turned as cold as ice and in the entrance of the hall here he was with  the most deceiving smirk on his face ... do you need help he asked while looking at her as if she was his prey...

Rayna starts dreaming as soon as she sleeps that same dream which she had been seeing since childhood. She is in a room with only one door. The wall in front of the door has a beautiful painting, which has mountains, a waterfall and in the middle of that there is a very large five corner star shaped bunch of flowers, from which the fragrance was coming. She was losing herself in the fragrance of those flowers.
That is when she suddenly gets the sound of screaming from behind those flowers. A mother was screaming out loud, "take out my daughter, save her, get someone out, please". For a while, that painful voice comes and then calms down. "Oh! Whose voice is this that shakes even my soul. So many times I have tried to remove these flowers, but it seems as if they are sticking to something, either to this mountain or something else is behind those flowers. I want to help this lady, a mother, but don't know how. It seems like as she's calling me. I want to help her but how?" Rayna is thinking and talking to her self.
That is when she heard the loud noise of the door closing behind her and she wakes up from sleep. And when her eyes open, there was her mother Patti standing infront of her door, holding a tray on which something was placed covering with a cloth. Every morning Petti comes with a tray with morning tea on it coverd with a beautiful piece of cloth but this time it is not a tea it's something else because the shape of that cloth is different. Patti took care of Rayna as if she was a princess. 
Patti- Good morning my princess.
Rayna- Good morning mom.
Patti- How was your night?
Rayan- Not very good but fine.
Patti- Today is your 18th birthday my dear and here is a beautiful gift for you. A very different gift which you got on your previous birthdays. I hope you will going to like it.
Rayna- Wow! Thank you so much mom, thank you. What is it?
Patti- You are most welcome. Well, check it by yourself honey, this is your gift and I am going now to prepare a breakfast for you.
Rayna- Thank you mom. Love you. (Hugging Patti).
Patti- Love you too honey, now get ready and don't be late for your breakfast. You know your dad, right??
Rayna- Sure mom, I'll be there on time.
Rayna opens her gift as Patti leaves the room. There is a beautiful butterfly shaped pendant with seven rainbow colours on it, which she has never seen before in her life. 
Rayna- Amazing! It is so beautiful and different.
'Very different, seems like it belongs to somewhere out of this world.' Rayna was thinking.
She gets ready and goes downstairs where her father and mother are waiting for her for breakfast. She is wearing a pink knee line frock with flowers on it and holding a pendant in her hand which her mother gave her in the morning.
Rayna- Good morning dad.
Titan (Rayna's father)- Good morning honey. Wish you a very happy birthday.
Rayna- Thank you so much dad. 'She placed a sweet kiss on his cheeks.'
Titan and Patti both used to fight a lot but they love their daughter and used to take care of their daughter very much.
Rayna- Mom can I wear this pendant.
Titan and Patti (together)- Yes, ofcourse. It's yours.
Rayna was surprised because she saw both of them agreeing on something together for the first time. 
After having breakfast Palash and Jinisha came to pick her up for the school. But Rayna refused to go to school as she wanted to stay at home with her parents and with shadow, her beautiful white cat.
Titan- Rayna you can go to your room if you want or else you can help your mother in her house hold work. 
Rayna- Ok, dad.
(Rayna's POV)
As I have finished my work, I went up to my room. It was not a big room but it had everything that an 18 year old young girl needs. There was a study table and books rack in front of the door, a bed on its side with a net around it.The wardrobe on the side of the bed and the balcony at the backside of the wardrobe, where there is a rounded coffee table with 4 chairs.There is a window in front of the bed, a perfect place for shadow to peek out. A mirror is installed at the side of the window. For which my mother used to say that "this is my magical mirror which tells me that my daughter is the most beautiful girl in the world." 
But I do not know why today when I came in front of the mirror wearing this pendant, I felt like the wings of this butterfly are moving, but than it stoped. So I thought it was a hallucination, it's not real. 
Than the night came and after having dinner we all four of us went to sleep. And as I slept, I have started dreaming the same dream again. Me, one room with painting of mountains, waterfall, river, bunch of flowers of 5 cone star shaped. And when the sound of that lady who was screaming, "pull my daughter out, someone help please", then the pendant in my neck, the butterfly's shape started flying. And it seemed as if that butterfly wanted to go to those flowers.  There were many more flowers in that place, but this butterfly has to go to those flowers from where that voice was coming. 
I took that pendant in my hand and walked towards those flowers and as soon as I reached the bunch of flowers there was one different flower in the corner started moving. I pulled that flower out and there I was a butterfly shaped hole underneath that flower.
"Oh! This was a lock and I have a key." 
Then something soft came and touched me.  I looked at my feet, "Shadow, what are you doing here and by the way how you came here."
"I am with you and following you since you were born," said the shadow.
I was very surprised to hear shadow's answer because shadow had never given me any answer before, whereas she has been with me since my childhood.
"Open the door Princess", said the Shadow.
' Princess...?'

The girl who used to be scared. What happened when she crossed the wall.

The next day, Joanna feels better. The herb soup and fruits that were sent to their suite last night helps her stomach to stabilize.
In the morning, a hotel boy knocks on the door and delivers a delicious breakfast. Joanna's mouth-watering overflowing from hunger after seeing the fruity pancakes, muffins, different jams, and toasted bread.
"Have you ordered them for me?" Joanna jumped on her and hugged her tightly.
"Actually, no. Maybe the hotel's special treats?" She also has no idea. 
"Wait, there's a note inserted on the bouquet!" Joanna picks up the small card then reads loudly.

"Oh, what nice handwriting. But, S. C.? Who's S.C.?"
"Huh?" Cassie is currently breathing in the lilies, they were so beautiful and looked freshly cut.
S. C.? Does it mean, it was from Shun? She blushed from the thoughts.
However, she can't tell Joanna about what happened last night. Either she will tease her, moreover, Joanna would nag her to death for meeting a stranger guy without her as a bodyguard.
Gladly, Joanna's eyes were all over the food and she didn't see how flushed her face upon learning that it was Shun who sent this luxurious breakfast. Cassie takes the card and keeps it. They rammed the food and burped from satisfaction. She's thinking of looking for Shun later to thank him. He did so much for her and even for Joanna.
"Wait, and why are you smiling?" Joanna finally notices the smile playing on Cassie's lips.
"I'm just excited for the later meeting." her alibi.
"Hmm. . . okay fine, whatever. I'll go use the shower first, do you mind?"
"Of course not, go ahead."

Cassie and Joanna follow the other guest that is coming out from the elevator. It is the end of summer but there are still many guests staying in the country.
"Oops, Cassie mom is calling, I'll answer her first."
"Sure," Cassie went to the lounge and took a seat on the empty couch. Behind her pink sunglasses, she observes the busy people in the lobby.
She was surprised when a woman stopped near her and began asking rudely the handsome man in a gray suit.
She thinks the man is upset with something but still talks to the woman calmly. Cassie listens secretly, so she took out her phone and browsed her Instagram.
"Tell me where Quinn, Rudolf!" asked the woman.
"How many times have I already answered he wasn't here? Even how many times you keep repeating the same question, the answer is the same. I believe it is very simple to understand, Olivia."
Cassie was stunned. The man sounded like he was insulting the woman. How sharp his tongue is... Cassie took a peep and she saw the anger flashes on this woman's face when she heard the man called her Olivia.
"Then give me his number instead!" The woman insisted.
"I don't have the full authority to give the President's phone number to anyone."
The guy named Rudolf sounded impatient but she doesn't understand how this beautiful woman chases a man? Clearly, this President's name Quinn was avoiding her to see. Cassie's interest grows and she gets intrigued who is this President Quinn? She continued gossiping to the scene in front of her.
"Then tell me where he is!"
"Jeez, Olivia. I have an important meeting to catch up on. Quinn was on a business trip, and he won't come back till next month. Bye."
The guy left Olivia who was still in a rage as she was only ignored. Olivia noticed that she was listening to their conversation.
"What are you staring at?" Olivia is glaring at her.
"Ah, no ma'am. You are just beautiful."
"Hmph!" Olivia's right brow rose upward. She looks at her from head to toe then walks away and leaves the hotel with her expensive car.
Cassie sighed. Why does a beautiful woman like her want to throw herself to someone who looks no interest at her? She was beautiful and rich. Surely she had many suitors.
Also, this President named Quinn... she was curious about what kind of a person he was. And looks like he has a reason why he is avoiding to meet that beautiful woman. She is rude and a complete spoiled brat.
According to this Rudolf guy, this President's name Quinn was on a business trip. Cassie wonders if she can get a chance to meet Shun today. She wanted to thank him and give back his coat, the first one he lends to her.
How if she will ask someone? Cassie's thoughts, then she began checking out every crew she spotted.
"Manager Lim! Director Lawrence is looking for you, they were in the meeting room."
"Okay, thank you."
Cassie stared at the man. The security called him Manager Lim, he must be the hotel's manager.
Cassie gathers the courage to approach the man.
"Excuse me, sir? I'm sorry to bother you but can I ask you about someone?" Cassie is a bit hesitant. She was now like that woman who chases a man. But she is not chasing a man. She just wanted to thank him.
"Did you know if, where--"
"Hello, Missy!"
Cassie was surprised by the person who approached her.
"Director Isagawa! Good morning sir," Manager Lim greeted this man.
"Good morning, Manager Lim. . . Kier wanted to see you asap, you should go now."
"Oh, right, sir. Miss, I am sorry but I need to leave."
"Ah no problem sir! Thank you." she bowed.
She then glanced at the man called Director Isagawa. So then, he surely knew where Shun now!
"Hello sir, good morning." She greeted him politely.
"Good morning, Missy. Do you need anything? What can I do for you?" Daichi asked this beautiful lady. Now he finally had the chance to have a closer look at her. She was truly very beautiful. 
Although, she seems very young. He hasn't been able to ask Quinn how old she was.
"Actually, sir, I just wanted to ask the whereabouts of Mr. Shun. I have something to give him back."
"Oh, Shun Crow you mean?" A silly smile playing on Daichi's lips.
"Yes, sir."
"Before I answer, call me brother Daichi!"
"Huh?" Cassie is dumbfounded.
"So?"
Cassie could see how this guy is serious about what he wanted her to do.
"But, sir. . ."
"Don't be shy, Missy! I would be happy!"
"Um, ok. . . brother Daichi," she said shyly.
"That's great, Missy! Anyways, Qui-- I mean, Shun is on a business trip. If you have any message, don't hesitate to relay the message to me."
"Oh, I see. Then, President Quinn and Mr. Shun were together on the business trip?"
"Huh? Ah, yes! They are together!" Daichi laughs nervously for the lies his boss created!
"I see. Okay, thank you, brother, Daichi."
"Don't mention it, Missy! Then, any message you would like to rely on him?"
"Um, I just wanted to thank him for breakfast today, he did so much for me already."
"Oh, the breakfast he prepared earlier!?"
"He's the one who made those?" Cassie was very surprised. What is this? Her heart acted strangely. These feelings are new to her so she cannot determine if this is what they called crush or 'puppy love'?
"Don't worry, Missy. He'll definitely receive your thank you for him! That's all your message?"
"Uh, yes, brother Daichi!" Cassie is shy to mention the bouquet of flowers that was sent along with the breakfast she received. "Thank you."
"It's a small thing, Missy! Then, I'll go ahead. Someone must be looking for me now."

Meanwhile, somewhere above the Pacific Ocean is the Crow Corporation private plane flying towards Hawaii to visit the Empire Dragon branch hotel.
There is a man who was restless in his seat. Blacklines are showing on his forehead and his assistant just sighed if what triggers his mood again.
Meisha heard that their boss had a good mood this morning. In fact, he woke up so early then occupied the Kitchen and prepared a very special breakfast.
It looks like this emergency trip is what triggers his mood.
On the other hand, Quinn is truly in a bad mood. Although he only had a few hours of sleep last night from working overtime, he was excited for the morning to come. Then bad news steals his little happiness. He sighed.
He was in the middle of his thought when his phone received an email, it was Daichi.
According to the email.

Instantly, a smile tore his lips. Meisha who was observing Quinn silently, his mouth dropped open to see him now smiling widely.

Lu Xiang's POV


I wake up with XiaoAi wrapped in my arms with a peaceful look on her face which gives me a homely feeling, her beautiful face covered with her soft brownish hair giving her a tender look. Slowly the memories from last night came to me and I started fearing the worse.


'Did she tell me all this so that she can leave me?...I didn't even thought that she knew about all this....was this what she wanted to tell me all along?'

All these questions were eating me from the inside, I know what I did in the past is worth a trip to hell and back but I cannot lose XiaoAi again or I won't be able to live with myself.

No wonder she left me to die, if it was me in her place I would've killed her and her lover with my own hands.


I can't let her leave me, I'll beg her for forgiveness, I'll do whatever it takes to get her to forgive me, to trust me and to love me.


I have decided that once she wakes up I'll show her how much I love and cherish her.

XiaoAi's POV



I wake with two arms wrapped around me, I struggle under the weight on my waist when my gaze falls on Lu Xiang staring intently on me which makes me feel a little intimidated. All the memories from last night make their way to my thoughts and I'm unable to make eye contact with the handsome man in front of me.


Two fingers gently push my chin upwards and my gaze meets Lu Xiang' s , I wait for him to say something with pleading eyes. After a few minutes his beautiful voice makes its way to my ears


"Hey love, good morning", he whispers and it makes me feel like i'll just vanish from the face of this planet in the next second, his breath tickles the crook of my neck and I become well aware of the lack of space between us. It makes my heart flutter, I can't help but think that maybe ....just maybe we can be normal and have a beautiful life and once again I wish that our every morning is like this full of love.

"Good morning", I reply and my cheeks feels a little too warm and I know that by now they must have a beautiful light shade of scarlet.

There is a peaceful silence between us which disperses as my sweet love speaks again

"You see I was thinking that maybe we can give us another try ...only if you want....and maybe be like when we were in college", he looks a little hesitant while speaking and I have to force a giggle back and put my serious face back on.

I give him a look which says 'are you serious?' and makes him look like a lost and broken puppy and I just can't stop myself from planting a sweet kiss on his lips.

I look down, embarrassed to meet his gaze and a smile graces my lips. He snuggles closer to me and rubs our cheeks together.....how I wish that this dream never ends.


He playfully bites on my earlobe causing my breath to hitch and seductively whispers in his husky morning voice

 " How about we take a long bath together just like the old time?",

And I just know that I'm beetroot red because of his deep chuckle. He picks me up bridal style and I wrap my arms around his neck and laugh as he playfully swings me while walking. I have decided that I'm gonna make this work.

When you feel like everything in life for you is meaningless and there is no reason for you to live on.

When you lose all will and strength to continue living, the only beautiful fragment of the horrible past you've been running from comes in front of you.

During a time when no one can be trusted and where everyone is bloodthirsty........a time  of war and segregation, will you be able to get yourself to trust him and love him?
Will you be able to forget the horrible past and give yourself and him another chance?

Asia turned and smiled when she saw who it was, she walked towards Hayato and Ui, she said as she put her hands together and bows towards them: "Good morning. Izumi-kun, Wakana-san."
 
"Good morning, Asia-chan." The two said.
 
Hayato and Ui also occasionally came to talk to Asia, since they live in the same building.
 
Although she is a nun. Hayato and Ui were comfortable in Asia's presence. She was a shy, kind, innocent, but quite inexperienced girl. So the two started to like this blonde girl with green eyes.
 
Asia Furinji was in the third year of Middle School (chūgakkō). She is currently 14 years old. She transferred to Kamiyama High School.

Asia looked at them both with a shy expression, but still smiled kindly when she said, "Good morning, Akeno-san, Hanabi-san."
 
"Ara, Asia-chan, good morning." Akeno smiled. She hadn't noticed Asia before since she was hiding behind Hayato.
 
"Good Morning." Hanabi greeted him as he bowed elegantly towards them.
 
As they walked and passed through the school entrance gate, Hanabi thought and said.
 
"Hey Hayato, if you have time, come and train at the temple." Hanabi really wanted him to go there.
 
Since she doesn't have a training partner to improve in Taijutsu, she knew that Hayato mainly trained his body and imagined that he should be good at hand-to-hand fighting. As for her sister Akeno, she preferred to train using long-range attacks, which is why she was not a good training partner.

Walking side by side, heading towards the school's exit, Misumi replied: "No, today was my day to clean my classroom."
 
"I understand." Hayato nodded and asked, "Can I accompany you home?"
 
Misumi looked at him suspiciously when she answered with a question: "Why do you want to accompany me home, huh, Izumi-kun?"

"Come along then wife, we have some exploring to do." With the breaking of dawn, Gengyo had already arisen, and was contending himself with idle thoughts and tea as he waited for Akiko to wake up.
"Wife…?" She blinked sleepily up at him, slightly recoiling at his use of the rather of blunt word.
"You are, are you not?" He was smiling to himself as he spoke, taking the pleasure in teasing her. "Or would you prefer mistress?"
"Gugh… Neither. Please, neither."
"Oh dear… She doesn't like it. I suppose that's it then. I've made my mistake. I will be left for another man by the morning. Ah, how pitiful it is to have lost such a treasure. I will have to embark on my journey alone." He began towards the door with an air of mock dramatism.
She squinted at the exit, daring to climb out of bed despite the coolness of the air. She was almost sure that he was playing with her. Still, she found her way to her kimono, and dressed with haste continually looking towards the door, expecting him to come back a moment later.
When he did not, she began to panic, wondering whether there was any seriousness in his words. And then, a moment later, she saw his head pop around the very bottom of the door, with an incredibly stupid look on his face, like that of a monkey.

"Mmph! And who's fault is it that I am in such a state? You have no regard for the routine of a woman."
"That's not true. I don't complain even when you let out one of your routine midnight farts."
"Hah…?" She opened her mouth in shock, blushing. "You're lying. There's no way I'd do that! Oh Tadakata! Please, leave me in peace, and I'll join you outside once I'm ready."
"Wait, wait! I thought that was a good thing. I thought you did it on purpose, to look after your husband. You're making sure that I get enough sleep by knocking me out and kickstarting the process."
"Tadakata!"
"Alright alright, I'll wait for you outside. Hurry up, would you? It's a beautiful day to be burying gunpowder." He relented and closed the door behind him, with a wide grin.
Akiko shook her head, letting loose a sigh as she muttered to herself. "Honestly… The things he comes out with."

"Morning Miura!" The little smith responded back enthusiastically, as the others spared him some morning greetings.
"How are things getting on? This looks like a fine piece of machinery here." Gengyo pronounced, tapping the end of what was the first finished cannon. Not only did it look threatening, but it also looked rather beautiful. He had taken the time to polish the metal, so that it was as shiny as the blade of a sword, and one could see their face in it. Let no one say that Takeshi did not take pride in his work.
"I-it's going pretty well! We've got the first cannon all ready to go, as you can see. I think things will be even quicker now. And we've begun work on the new type of ammunition, so we can start testing it at the end of the day." 
This role seemed to be exactly what he had needed to help him get him out of his shell. His nervous stuttering had improved markedly from what it was before, and when he spoke, he was able to do so with a degree more confidence and clarity.
"I'll look forward to seeing that then. Have fun!" He bid his farewells cheerfully, as they began to walk toward the city gate.
"See up there, Akiko? The men have already gotten so far in dismantling the old archer cages. When it's reframed as training, I swear their performance increases by two-fold." He spoke, pointing up towards the wall where the Red Feather soldiers were finishing up their assigned work.
"Mm, they're battle junkies, just like you. But it's not like I don't understand – I want to get stronger too." 
"Heh, you're already plenty strong. Think back to where we were just a few months ago – you'd be able to beat that Akiko up in seconds."
"And that Tadakata." She reminded him with a sneaky glance.
"Hey, that's too far. Even if it's the past me, don't go beating me up."
"Someone needed to. You used to tease me something rotten back then."
"And I don't now?" He threaded his arm over her shoulders, and dragged her in close to prove his point.
"Mm, let go! People are watching."
"So? All they see is a man that loves his wife."
"Guhhh…" She looked at the floor, embarrassed, unable to look the onlookers in the eye. Contrary to her, Gengyo freely nodded to everyone that looked towards them, as he passed out of the old wooden gates.
Outside one could see the beginnings of the logging train. Back and forth oxen were led by masses of people, dragging great chunks of timber, and setting them outside the city gates, readying them for processing.
As soon as they were received, a second detachment went to work on debarking, and creating panels with which they could use for the rebuilding of the archer cage. When they had enough wood, the logging team would switch their jobs, and become the rebuilding team, ensuring that everything was pushing forward as efficiently as possible.
"Good work everyone." Gengyo called out as he passed.
"Morning Miura-sama!" Those with any sense called back, not willing to risk portraying an improper amount of respect.
"What are we doing out here again?" Akiko asked, only now stopping to consider why they had been dragged to the middle of the field.
"Well… The weakest point in this entire fortress – even after we're done all the repairs – will remain this wall, in which the gate is embedded. Most commanders will seek to attack here, and burn it down, so that they can charge in an overwhelm us."
"They can climb up too though…" She pointed out, a little worried by the prospect.
"They can, and that might be a viable tactic since they will likely have far more men than us. They can keep us buried here as the front, whilst they run around and try and climb at another point. However, they will be unsuccessful in doing that. Because of our firepower, we could simply abandon this gate-bearing wall, and pick off all the men who are attempting to climb, before coming back to defend. The climbers will be mightily exposed, so we should be capable of doing that."
"But… what if we're not?"
"A good question indeed. Since we've been granted – by some god or other – this little grace period - this little time to prepare - then it does not make sense to leave that up to chance. I stated it before, did I not? That the only thing we can really do, is prepare our defences as optimally as we can. So, we're going to set up a little something to give us the time we need in order to deal with any climbers."
"Mhm, I remember you saying. But what is..?"
"We're going to burry a couple of surprises."
"Surprises?" She asked, frowning.
"Indeed. Deposits of gunpowder and hidden trenches of oil at locations only we know about. Then, when the time comes, we had only need send a shot towards them, and then the chaos of a whole firing squad will be brought to bear upon the battlefield."
"Wow… so that thing you said this morning – you weren't joking?" She asked in dismay. She'd dismissed it entirely as a joke.
"Of course not. I never joke." He announced with a perfectly straight face.
She shook her head ignoring his obvious lie. "But how will we remember where each barrel is? What happens if you need to go off somewhere, and there is no one else to remember where the barrels are?"
"We'll map the location of all of them, worry not."
