Chapter 16. Finding the Owner, Part II

It was a stage set up for festivals and events hosted by the city, and so wide that they could not feel crowded even if a hundred people gathered.
 
But now the square, where a hundred people had gathered, seemed so full that no one could come in anymore.
 
It meant that the spirit of each person filling it was so huge and intense.
 
The basis and evidence of such spirit were the marks that most of the people who filled the square had on the back of their right hand.
 
Awakeners.
 
Furthermore, they were hunters, who used the power of the Awakeners to hunt monsters.
 
'How long do we have to wait?'

The First Hunter is a short Korean, action-fantasy novel situated in a post-apocalyptic world. Monsters start appearing out of nowhere and people are unlocking strange powers. Those who unlock such powers are called ‘Hunters’, ones with the strength to kill the monsters. To fight and survive, that is their goal. Society crumbles and the world burns.

A very fun novel that dives into the plot almost instantly. The novel is interesting in a way that it depicts a lot of human nature and what people would do in a situation such as this is quite an accurate manner. The character development is also very good as you get to learn about the characters, their backgrounds, and their stories. All in all, this is another novel I’d recommend to a lot of readers who are interested in reading fantasy and gaming novels.

Tyler looked at her, mesmerized by her expression. The long eyelashes, full lips, wild hair. She was powerful and independent, things that he used to run from in a woman. But in Willow, he was drawn to her like a magnet, dragged to be by her side. 

When she was captured, he imagined what he would feel like without her. When she was injured, he suddenly knew how devastating it could be to see her hurt. She was bleeding, but he felt every drop, was pained by every scar.

"I care what happens, because I care about you, Willow."

She owned his heart, so when it broke, his broke too.


Rylee's Room // 11:31pm
It felt like the temperature moved from 72 straight to 100 degrees (f). Rylee's cheeks flames, she buried her face in her pillow and muffled a squeal, hoping Tara wouldn't hear her. She re-read the post, trying to keep her heart from beating faster. They were just words, but they managed to stir so many emotions. How did RogueOwl DO that? 

It was official. She was swooning over a digital romance.

'It's not like he confessed his love for YOU, you dork,' she thought, holding her pillow to her stomach. She knew real life love stories never turned out that sweet. With Blake it had been an anti-climactic 'hey, lets go out'. She couldn't remember feeling butterflies this intense in that relationship, and they had been engaged.

The thought sobered her, and stopped her from typing her reply. The longer she looked back, the more ridiculous it all seemed. Rylee had been picking out wedding dresses, looking at venues, but it never felt magical.

What if it never felt that way? What if her heart only thundered for someone else's romance?

Well, at least that meant she would feel giddy sometime...right?

Rylee looked at the clock, knowing she needed to go to bed soon. Having the time off her feet did not mean she got to sleep in, sadly. It felt almost routine to get up early and be dumped on Evan's doorstep. If she was honest, she might even say she was looking forward to it.

Rylee spent most of this week helping Evan with his art. They finished the commissions he had due, and Monday's web comic was ready. Instead of being behind, he was actually ahead for the following week. In fact, helping Evan was relaxing, and she had really enjoyed herself. They talked, discussed the projects, and it was nice having lunch with him. Evan still managed to cook decently with one arm, and made tacos, chicken and rice, and a homemade Mac and cheese. When she asked why he put so much effort into cooking, he just shrugged and told her he really didn't have much else he could do.

Rylee couldn't fault him. That was why she was helping after all. She spent the last 5 days off of work, and her time at home was mostly spent on the forum. She enjoyed writing, but it didn't prevent her from feeling restless. She didn't miss working, but it would be a lie if she didn't feel anxious having the spare time. Free time meant hours she wasn't getting paid for. She couldn't afford much more of this.

Tara told her not to worry, believing that the settlement from the accident would make up for lost pay. It sounded nice in theory, but their bills couldn't wait forever. 

Rylee put her phone aside and stared at her ceiling. Tomorrow she had a doctors appointment in the afternoon. Evan offered to give her the ride there, since Tara still had work. With any luck, she would be free of the chair and the stitches, and life would resume to normal. So why did that make her feel so sad? Was it the art?

Or was it Evan?

No. No no. She put the pillow over her face and resisted the urge to hit herself with it. He was a famous artist. He had millions of online followers. She was a no-name nerd who worked at a burger place. Yeah, this week had been great, but he was Zane's friend, not hers.

'You can't go through all of this and still not consider him a friend.'

The thought was surprisingly honest. The car crash, community day, the artwork, all of those things brought them together in the span of a week. Rylee finally had to admit that obligation wasn't all that made her visit Evan.

//Sparrow, you heading to bed?// the message was waiting for her when she glanced at the chat box. 

//Wish I could say no, but I have to work tomorrow.// she responded. //I'll have a reply by tomorrow night though! See you then!// 

Rylee logged off and shut the web browser, wondering what RogueOwl would say about the situation. Helping Evan was still doing artwork, it just wasn't her own project like she wanted to really try. Her desk had more doodles and sketches of Bandit. She even had one of two drafts she felt would be worth sharing online. She just didn't feel ready to jump yet.

Weren't life of death experiences supposed to jump start you to try everything you never imagined you could? Why did she still feel so afraid...

Rylee was a college student with her dreams spread out before her. She was engaged to her best friend, pursuing her passion for art, and couldn’t wait for the future. But everything came crashing down when he departed, leaving her heart and her wallet empty. 

Despite the pain of betrayal, she tried not to loose hope. Putting her plans on hold, she was forced to focus on a 9-5 work cycle, secretly wondering about the ambitions she shelved in the process. I woke up at around 8:30 this morning. The sun was up and I was relieved to know that it was a Saturday where I had no obligation to get up early.

I sat in my bed and reached over to look at my phone. Nearly a dozen notifications from various applications presented themselves, the majority being from discord. I began to go through all the messages and pings I had gotten durint my slumber.

Soon afterwords, I decided to check out the new anime episodes released today. Saturday is sorta like a huge release day for a lot of large animes. Shows such as Detective Conan, Sword Art Online, My Hero Academia, and One Piece all release throughout the day on Saturday. 

I noticed that both the Sword Art Online and My Hero Academia episodes had been released. I watched them both, starting with SAO and then moving on to MHA.

By the time these episodes finished, it was nearly 10AM and I realized I should probably get up and get ready for the day. 

I started by going downstairs and cooking breakfast. I settled on making french toast, as I have numerous times before. The only difference is that today I began experimenting with using a french baguette as the vessel for the french toast. As opposed to having my normal three or so slices of normal bread, I cut numerous slices off a french baguette and made multiple at one time. It tasted exquisite.

Shortly after breakfast, I began my normal routine for getting ready for the day. I hopped in the shower, brushed my teeth, shaved my peach-fuzz mustache, got dressed in actual clothes, etc...

I then realized how bored I was going to be today if I didn't find something to do. I messaged a lot of my friends and anxiously waited for anyone to respond. I got unlucky. Nobody could hangout today.

At around noon my mother left. Today she had to take some testing to attempt to become a certified teacher. She had a goal of getting another job as a tutor, but for some odd reason, a state certification was required.

My mother has a bachelor's degree majoring in psychology as well as a master's in education. The only difficulty is that it's been thirty years since she attended Syracuse University and since then a lot has changed. She isn't used to the computer-based standardized testing of the modern day and has trouble keeping up.

Needless to say, after she left for the test, I decided to have some lunch. It was around 12:30PM at this point, and I made some kraft mac n cheese and poured myself a glass of cola. I actually somewhat hate Kraft mac n cheese, however, it was all that was really in the house right now so I sucked it up and dealt with it.

The small microwaveable bowl of Kraft mac n cheese didn't last long, however, so at around 1PM or possibly 2PM I made myself some ramen noodles as a snack.

At around 3PM, I got a text from my mother. She had already gotten her reading test score back. Unfortunately, she had failed the test. This was her fourth time failing, and I honestly think that at this point she should give up. The amount of time and money she has spent on these tests is getting ridiculous and it's going nowhere. Oh well.

She got home around 3:30 and we then decided to go to church this Saturday afternoon, that way we could just rest tomorrow. Mass began at 4PM and my mother still needed to do some things to get ready. I knew the ride there would take around thirty minutes, and concluded we would certainly be late.

However, we ended up going to mass this evening anyways. We showed up fifteen minutes late and just sat in the section where the parents with children sat because it was the only place that wasn't taken in the church. Mass went on and was rather standard procedure.

We left church at around 5:30 and our way home began pondering what to have for dinner. We ended up settling for some McDonalds, ordering a McChicken and drink for each of us. This total costed just a bit over $7 and fed a family of three. It was certainly a good deal.

We stayed there for a while but after I leaving I took a large Dr. Pepper home with me. Normally I'd just get coke, but today I just felt like changing it up a little.

Soon after I got home, now being around 6PM, my mother asked me to go to the grocery store with her. I agreed as I had nothing better to do.

At the grocery store, we picked up some fresh bakery dough. My mother and I planned on making homemade spinach and sausage rolls tomorrow, as well as homemade pizza. All these dishes are rather tasteful, and I can't wait for tomorrow.

We also picked up a slew of other groceries for general meals. For example, a large back of potatoes would provide me snacks for the next couple weeks.

We finally headed home and by the time we got back it wad around 9:30. We brought in the groceries and shortly after I realized how late it already was. 

My phone was dead when we got home so before writing today's chapter I had to let it charge a bit. In the meantime, I practiced learning opening 1 for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure on the piano. I began making slow progress, but it is certainly going to take a while.

I also decided to snack on some cashews. They were unsalted though so I had to add my own.

Eventually, after waiting long enough for my phone to charge, I began writing this chapter. At the time of finishing it is around 10:30 and I will be uploading this chapter at 11PM as usual. Stay tuned for tomorrow's chapter, peace out.

This is my life. I am writing this story to always remember where I came from in the years to come.

The story of dragon ball will be at the same time that it will not be the series it is like an alternative timeline like the one of tronck open characters and worlds to my invention there will be the main characters but I will create my own characters each time the story takes place.

My character will be op but he will work to be so and his system will also be 100% functional since the mac will interact with him frequently which cannot be abandoned as if it did not exist.
In this story there will be a bit of romance and harem not much but there will be a character for me if he returns without a woman would be spoiled since a sayayin is moved by emotions is to make him stronger at the same time so that he has a weakness since each dragon has its scale that should not be touched.

The Mac doesn't really care much if history changes or not since this timeline was born back then. What else can happen? Why not change things when people who shouldn't mess with you?

At first it may be boring but it will not be for long since it explains a little the life of the character and it may seem a bit typical but it will only be the beginning of the novel.

The store reception for Lai Fu's Offshore Sea Store was exceptionally well received by the older generation. The discounts and offers that he had assigned for the first day made all the aunties and uncles rush in like mad dogs, snatching up almost everything he had on display.
Thankfully, being an experienced storekeeper for many years, he had previously ordered three months worth of stock to satisfy the demand for the frenzy buying. Lai Fu knew that the first day was one of the best times to earn quick cash to recoup the losses since people always wanted new stuff and a store opening usually resulted in the most substantial amount of customers.
Helping them out, Jin had developed a small little USB drive that could be connected to any sort of phone (as part of Lai Fu's request list). Those USB drives would act like temporary storage rings allowing them to put the items that they wanted to buy into it since most items were enchanted with anti-storage ring to prevent looting and theft from happening.
Either that or they could personally hand carry them on the carts provided. However, the technological advancement in recent years had made online supermarkets extremely popular, and the Offshore Sea Store was no exception in participating them.
With the help of the System, Jin had assisted Lai Fu in creating an online mart on the Pandamonium App as well as applying to the famous supermarket delivery services apps. As Lai Fu previously subscribed to be one of the sellers in those apps as well, the System merely aided him by instantly updating the items that were left in his store to those apps. Else, he had to pay an additional premium subscription fee to do that.
But because of the integration of the online market via Pandamonium App, users could also earn and utilise Panda Medals by doing so. In fact, every purchase in the Tiangong Tree Mall would allow them to earn Panda Medals which could indirectly be used to either obtain items in Jin's store or used as the premium currency for his mini games and dungeons.
During his downtime from the day before, Jin had planned a road map to revamp the usage of Panda Medals. Instead of merely using it as a sort of reward or extra currency, he was thinking of creating discount packages that utilised those medals too. Things such as free food delivery package for 10,000 Bronze Panda Medals or discount voucher package for 8,000 medals.
While he was merely copying ideas that were already on the market, they had proven to be successful, and Jin saw no reason why he could not get a share of the pie as well. Maybe in the future, Jin could liaise with other apps like the taxi and online market delivery to further integrate the Pandamonium App into society. Right now, he was satisfied starting small and just making sure that his Tree Mall was not only an overnight success but a continuous one.
Yet even though there was the online market app choice, most of the older generation prefer to go down to the stores to select their items. As long as it was not a crazy surge of people, the aunts and uncles would love to take their time in choosing their fruits and vegetables, picking the best out of the lot in the store's bin. In addition, the physical stores sometimes provided discounts that were not available on the online apps.
The same was true for Lai Fu's Instance Store. The current Day One discount was the biggest discount he had ever offered. By buying five items, one of the five cheapest items would be discounted at 99% (up to a certain price point of 100 Yuan). Hence, many people took the chance to buy the more expensive stuff all at once, mainly comprising the premium food stock from Jin's Agriculture Sector.
Even Lai Fu was shocked at how fast Jin's food stock vanished, and when he queried some of his long time customers, their reasoning made perfect sense. "There was no scent of pesticide used on these at all! The colour of the vegetables is very prominent too! It has been so many years since I saw this kind of naturally grown fruits and vegetables." the collective opinions of his customers who were equally health conscious in their advanced age answered him. (Things which Lai Fu already know when he personally examined the goods too, but verification from his peers sealed the deal for him even further.)
"Do you know that considering the quality of the products, the price you place on it is freaking cheap? Of course, I will get a bulk of them before it gets all sold out!" His customers said frantically and went to the payment cashiers where a team of Deep Ones were manning the cashier booth.
One scanned the items, the other two packed them up before the customer could choose between delivery to their house or self carry. Most were okay with carrying thanks to the power of the storage ring, but some did choose the delivery option, taking advantage of the Day One discounts to buy for their relatives too.
As Lai Fu began developing a friendly relationship with the Deep Ones, he even requested more of them via the Pandamonium App while they were still free. (He still would be charged according to their numbers starting next month). Sure, he still had some of his old employees, but many quit after the incident, with only a few loyal enough to remain behind.
Thus, Lai Fu ended up deploying them for all kinds of jobs. The owner used them for cashier services restocking the items and currently (maybe most importantly) for crowd control. Lai Fu believed that they were the ideal monster NPCs which were fierce enough to go against the crowd.
There were instances where those greedy uncles and aunties were tempted to take fresh stock from their hands, (mainly because of the discounts Lai Fu had provided) which caused the Deep Ones shouted at them and even scratched them superficially as a warning.
The customers in return demanded for compensation, but before Lai Fu could intervene in any way, the Deep Ones officially issued a duel challenges to settle the store. Should they accept and win the duel, they would get their compensation, fair and square along with an apology.
The ignorant older cultivators thought this was a simple fight and part of Lai Fu's new instance, so they fought against them recklessly. (The only ones who had the last laugh were the cultivators that had experienced Jin's stores and knew what capabilities these fishes had.
…So far, none had won against the mighty Deep Ones and the customers learnt the lesson not to disturb the Deep Ones during their restocking. What followed was an extremely ridiculous sight to behold. Lai Fu had never thought it possible to witness customers standing at the side, mere inches away from a Deep One, patiently waiting for him to finish restocking the items before pouncing on the goods and merchandise.
"Each Yuan for these angry fish is worth it." Lai Fu chuckled to himself as he sat at the side of the recently arrived Discount Pirate Ship and enjoyed some fishing.

White, very white, other than that there's no way Zhong Yue can describe the place she's in. Chair white, table white, book white, ceiling white, walls white, fan white and a strange floating orb also white. She can guess what happened to her.

"Host, can you hear me?" A childish voice sounded across the room.

I can hear you quite clearly, but must I believe so, Yue thought.

"Host, do you want to know how you died?" An intriguing tone came.

It's a system. I must have died in my sleep after all.

"Do tell." Although she can guess, she still wanted to know.

The white book flashed and floated from the table in front of her. Pages flipped and stopped and on it, a picture started moving. It was her on her bed. Black curly hair, cream pale skin, long black eyelashes, slender hands and legs curled up in a ball. A beauty, she is.

And then, she rolled... off the bed. Her head struck the floor and like that she died?!

Yue could tell that now her eyes must have enlarged quite shocked at the scene.

Can't believe I died that way!

"Host..."

"Say which system are you? What do I have to do? Is there's a beginner's pack? And any rewards at the end?" She didn't want to hear any comforting words about such an awkward incident. She wanted to know what would happen from now on. She had no regrets. Although she still wanted to do much more in her life.

"Host, I'm Hong Yue, #0078 Treasure Saving System. I will help you across the worlds in saving the treasures that should have protected the world in incoming crises but because of the protagonist of that world, they were used up or destroyed leading to the world's destruction afterwards."

Quite a protagonist they are, destroying the world instead of saving it.

"Since the host don't has any specialities that may help ahead, I will provide the host with 3 skills to choose from which you can learn and 1000 points as starting value."

Saying I don't have any specialities that may help is very rude.

"Host, you will be able to save yourself from death upon collecting enough life points at the end. And, host may shift between the real world and other previously visited worlds upon collecting their fragments."

So, I have a chance to resurrect and cross in-between the visited worlds. Not bad!

"Command initiated." That was the last childish voice Yue heard before she was sent in a room alone with a manual for coding and PC for practicing.

It was tiring and stressing.

She spent a whole week before she was able to finish learning Coding at Beginner's stage. She was now adapted at creating a game with exceptional game play, dialogues and animations. And simple apps and programmes were too easy to make. At least, now she was able to recreate a Tomb Raider II from her skills. It turned to be very beneficial for her to bind with this system. After she goes back to her world, she will be exceptional in her studies and will be able to outshine others very well.

The white book flashed in front of her. It was now able to come before her whenever she thought of it. More convenient than Hong Yue.

"Host, are you ready?" Hong Yue asked.

"Yes."

"Initiating transfer... 2%, 5%, 7%..." A monotonous voice sounded as Zhong Yue lost her consciousness.

Zhong Yue, an addicted novel reader, died by a silly accident. She fell off her bed. Opening her eyes and finding herself in a white room, she realised that she was chosen. But why? She had yet to know. Will she find as she travels through the worlds? Or will she discover another life?

Lindy stared at the expanse between herself and the next roof. All she had to do was run and jump, just like she did every day.  It wouldn't be hard, she'd done it a thousand times.  "without a broken arm" a voice reminded her in her mind.  She shoved the reminder aside.  She needed to prove she could do more. 

Setting herself back about halfway down the roof to be able to build up the speed she would need, she began to run.  As she neared the edge of the wall she could tell something was off but it was too late to stop, she stretched out her legs and her good arm and realized she wasn't going to make it. 

Master Daphne was on her way back to her quarters from the Council chewing her out for her behavior with Tarq when the scream drew her attention.  She looked around, her body immediately falling into a defensive stance, and saw the girl fall from the rooftop two buildings ahead of her.  She ran but the girl had hit the ground before she could get there. 

The thunder of feet told her that others had heard and were coming.  She checked for the girl's pulse.

"What happened?" one of the healers pushed through the crowd.  Daphne shook her head, "She screamed while she was falling, I was too far, there wasn't enough time"

"I remember her," the healer turned the lifeless body, it was still warm but the heat was quickly leaving now that she was dead.  "Master Kurt set this arm only a short time ago. She shouldn't have been up there."

Masters formed a loose barrier around the corridor blocking others from getting close.  calls of "fetch Master Kurt" and "stand aside there's been an accident".

Mac wondered about the crowd and snuck forward to see.  A master stopped her when she got too close. "I know that girl," Mac pushed at the Master when she realized the half shrouded body was Lindy.  "No, she has ti get up.  She'll be ok right? Where's Katherine, does she know?" 

"Come along," Daram grabbed her shoulder, "Let's go talk and find this Katherine you're talking about." He had to half drag Mackinley who kept trying to move back toward Lindy's body.  He didn't take her to find Katherine. He took her to the nearest dining hall and called to the kitchen staff for a brandy.

Mac moved suddenly, "she was my friend," her shoulders drooped. "what happened? can they heal her? Does Katherine know? she was always nice to me even though I was the littlest." Snatches of her time with Lindy whirled through her mind. 

Daram accepted the brandy and instructed her to sip. Mac pushed it away, "Mistress Sheleigh beat us after drinking, I won't become like her!"

Daram sat, "I'm sorry about your friend but Hushai can't show emotion. This is something you're normally good at, you need to find a way to control your sorrow, your anger and anything else you're feeling and hide it behind your mask."

Mac wanted to yell and scream and cry, but Daram was in charge of her training.  Matter Garvin had asked him to make sure Mac's training was complete, to do that Mac knew she had to follow his every instruction no matter how she felt. 

"Good. Very good." Daram praised as she he did the deep breathing exercise they normally did with their meditation and regained control. "Now, will you wait here, do you want training or do you want to go to your room while the Council investigates?"

"What about Katharine?" she asked. 

"All trainees have someone in charge of their training: Katherine will be somewhere with her trainer and probably drinking enough brandy for both of you. "

"Then could we train please? I'm not sure I want my mind  to have so much time to think."

"Let's go outside the walls today," Daram instructed, "We'll start with the pudao."

"Get up," Daram commanded. 

The rain had turned the training yard into mud, yet they still trained. It had been over a two years since Master Garvin had left and almost the same since Lindy had fallen to her death. Daram had been relentless, Mac struggled to her feet despite the mud: they were among the first to rise and the last to sleep. 

Mac had fought him at first, especially after Lindy. She'd wanted to grieve, wanted to go home, wanted Lindy back.  Katherine was worse. Master Kurt had to keep her asleep to stop her from hurting someone.  Tarq had received a punishment from Philip after being unkind about the incident, she had seen most of the others she'd come with since Lindy's death  They had come to understand that their reactions were not going to change that Lindy had died and there wasn't anything anyone could have done.

Mac's body was changing.  Running the walls was easier, her arms were stronger, her mind sharper.  Meditation was helping her focus.  Daram had introduced her to other Junior Hushai and instructed her to train with them. their daily lessons including reading, writing, arithmetic and deportment. She learned greetings and manners for all of the countries the might visit.  Occasionally another Master would test her abilities with hand to hand or with weapons. 

She found training with a group of people different, they had to be careful not to hurt each other: the first time she had pulled her punches and kicks. Daram had not gone easy on her that day, or since. He taught her to jump, to fall and to use a pudao. The pole arm was an extension of herself now.

The dinner bells were calling but Mac knew not to stop until Daram said she could.  She was surprised when he called a halt almost immediately. 

"Well done, Mackinley," the older boy praised.

Inside she could hear a celebration starting and looked askance, "what are they celebrating?"

"Two Junior Hushai have been named Masters," he told her. "Master Garvin returned with them this afternoon."

"Master is back?" she was surprised. 

"Yes," Daram smiled at her, " Go clean up and join the celebration.  Master will see you again tomorrow."

"Again?"

"Yes Mackinley, he observed your training most of the afternoon." They walked toward the bathhouse, "You did me credit while he observed."

"I did what you've taught me to do," she said honestly. "Do I need to go to the celebration? I don't know if I want to be around that many people drinking."

"It's up to you," he told her.

She bowed and went to clean her equipment and bath. 

The weapons master had gone when Mackinley returned the pudao. It didn't matter, she'd learned the process because Daram kept her training late often. 


She tought about Master Garvin, Daram and everything she'd done. she knew she was advanced for her age: they guessed she was eight now; but only in the last four months had she realized how advanced she was because of her individual training.  

The last year was hard: Lindy had died first but three others had as well from accidents in training-- one was trampled by the horses when he had hidden in the pen during a storm, but the others had been killed by pudao's improperly used. 

She ran her hands up the pudao she was putting away, oiling it with a rag to clean it. The long pole arm had a hooked blade on one end.  Daram had one that the blade pivoted to a compartment inside-- she liked it because the blade would be hidden most of the time, disguising the weapon.  Another Master had created a pudao that was tapered so the lengths of the pole were disguised into one small section.  She liked the theory but when she tried it felt the weight was off and the weapon didn't feel as secure. 

As a Hushai they were taught every weapon: the Tzigane fans and shawls were a favorite by many women among the Hushai; Astorium's curved swords and long bows from the forested lands East and cross bows from the west.  Tarq had been one of her teachers, showing her the weapons of his people: the round sharp edge disc the called a shakra and the short broadsword. 

Daram said she was doing well and he was running out of ways to challenge her.

Instead of going to the celebration Mac made her way to the bathhouse.
