The next day arrived faster than usual. Out in the capital, at daybreak – when citizens rushed over to the business and commercial district for work; newspapers sold quickly. It might not have looked apparent at first, the influence of Adventurers and guild had grown over the years. As famed and popular as mages were at one point, that spot was slowly taken by the born fighters with the inhuman potential. For many, that line of work was a dream, one that many wanted to partake despite the dangers.
 "First platinum quest to be completed," boys ran around the streets trying to sell issues." Located near the town square, the heart of the capital from where every district could be reached from – small cabinets with papers had opened. The words platinum quest had piqued the interest of many potential buyers. 
 'The fantasy of being the first to accomplish a tier-one quest has been claimed. Not by a top-guild, but one of the lower and lesser-known guilds: Kniq. Details about the exact quest have been kept confidential. An interview with the guild master has given a vague idea of what transpired. The closed border leading to the south has been subjected to an onslaught of monster's activity. The aforementioned guild's involvement in stopping the siege was imperative. For three months, the guild fought day and night to keep our border safe. From tier-10 to tier-3 monsters, they fought tirelessly to save us all.' A summary of what the news had written was read out loud by Undrar. 
 "They also go on to quote us from our interview," Deadeyes pointed out. Sat around a lovely breakfast with newspapers on the table, they read and smiled for it was a great honor to be the headline of today's news. 
 "The fight was long and hard. Though in the end, with the power of teamwork – we survived the assault," – Avon [Sapphire].
 "At times I thought death had had me in its eyesight. Nevertheless, a pull of the trigger later, all my fears fired alongside the bullet," – Deadeyes [Steel].
 "To save others and protect what is precious, tis the job of a hero," – Achilles [Silver].
 "As powerful as we might have been, if it wasn't for a well-established plan of action, we'd had died without a time to refute," – Viola [Silver].
 "Many comrades were lost, but their memories live on in our memories." – Emma[Sapphire].
 "To endure and power through, that was the teaching given by our guild leader," – Emmy[Sapphire].
After the quotes, the article went into further details about the fights. This information was directed mostly towards aspiring adventurers. Having a firm idea of how things were done could be the deciding factor between life and death. At the end, written in a smaller font, no quotes from Kniq's guild leader. Thus, being the first party to accomplish such a feat, their name would be forever etched into history. The reaction from said news had taken the capital by stride. Many were amazed by the details of the fight. The standards to which the protectors had to follow was raised. Many of the top-guilds were gutted by said news, though it remained behind closed doors.
 "They might quote us, but none really know our faces do they," Achilles commented then sipped tea.
 "You're right, it's probably for the better," Undrar agreed. 
A few meters away, stood on the first floor in the hallway, Staxius waited with a bag filled with books. 'I wish I had more time to spend with Xula yesterday,' he sighed, '-I did manage to get the scholar to make me a sword similar to Orenmir, Blood Blade of the Queen. It might take a few days; we'll have to wait and see.' After returning to Pandora last night – the Lymsey sister took refuge and slept in the lab. As silent as a cat, he teleported to Arda where a stern-looking Xula waited. The supposed one-week trip turned into months. A little angry, he got given the silent treatment. Nevertheless, after flattery and compliments, breaking through that adorable, angry side of Xula – they made up with a shared passionate night. Before the sun awoke, Staxius returned for there were things to be settled. 
 "I'm sorry for being such a bad husband, you deserve better," cuddled under a blanket, he whispered with regret in the tone. A vivid piece of memory that carried over to the next day.
 "It's fine," she caressed his hair and face, "-you're working hard for both my and the kingdom's sake. How it hurts to be away from he who stole my heart," a kiss later, "-I don't mind it one bit. Do what must be done, thou shalt always have a home to return. Tis my job as a wife to welcome thee with open arms," a smile followed by the scent of flowers, Xula's generosity knew no bounds. 
 "Living a normal life isn't in our fate," he sighed, "-you're a queen and the heir to the god of death. Excepting normality is a dream, however, I vow to always stand by thy side," their fingers interlocked, face to face, he smiled and she blushed, "-I adore you so much, queen of my heart and soul, I adore you…"
 "Wake up…" the daydream broke by Lizzie's voice. 
 "Oh, sorry about that," the prior night's memories returned to the back of the mind. The love that built between the king and queen transcended what people deemed as normal. Both felt exactly the same way, despite not having time to spend with one another. Each moment allowed was precious – what they had was unconditional love. To love without condition, each wanted the other's happiness and expected nothing in return. Selfless and noble – the bond wasn't tied to the mortal realm either, it reached their soul as well. Not to forget, Staxius was the conduit for Xula, channeling her power and returning her status as Angel wasn't a mere act of kindness. He had done something worth much more than words and actions. In Xula's case, she gave Staxius a new purpose, a new will, and a new mindset. A change that made him into a better person, a change he'd never forget for it was the best thing to ever happen. In that sense, both were saviors to one another, the love story of an angel and the heir to a god.
 "It's fine," Lizzie spoke with a smile, her uniform, one of white and golden color – the one that was previously torn now replaced.
 "Shall we leave?" he offered.
 "After we say good-bye to the others," she smiled, thus their arrival at the hotel's eatery. 
 "Morning everyone," Lizzie spoke with a big smile.
 "Morning Lizzie, morning master," the others returned said greeting.
 "I see the newspaper has our name on it," Staxius pointed to which Avon lent his copy. The chatter continued as if old friends. A few minutes later, Auic descended from her room with a lunchbox. 
 "Sorry I'm late," she said whilst panting, her face covered in sweat.
 "It's fine," Lizzie reassured the fox-lady then took the box.
 "Master…" confused, Auic needed answers.
 "I forgot to say," he cleared his throat and gained the table's attention. "-Starting today, I've decided to embrace my duty as Lizzie's guardian. Change is sure to come; I hope everyone is ready – that platinum quest we accomplished has opened new avenues," the voice soothing and filled with determination.
 "What about the twins then?" Undrar asked, "-from what I found out, they don't have a place to call home any longer," her concern was well-founded. 
 "Good point," he returned her question with a smile, "-Kniq is a big family. Atop being a guild, we're one big unit – the twins might not have a home yet," a quick pause later, "-that is to say that, the change will come. Best be ready, my friends, my comrades, you best be ready – we shall soon enter a new age," Staxius spoke with a leader's vigor.
 "We'll trust you," Achilles replied with a smile, they nodded in agreement. 
 "It's getting rather late, I'll see you all later. If anything comes up, do reach out – I shall be at Pandora, I think," wearing the same clothes as yesterday, the duo entered Void and headed off to school.
 "Something has changed," Deadeyes commented.
 "I think so, yeah," Undrar agreed.
 "Let's not forget that Staxius is still twenty or so," Avon added.
 "Age is just a number," Auic interjected, "-in my opinion, I think master is standing up to his many responsibilities. As he said, change is underway, we all can but wait and see," breakfast continued. 
 "Are you going to come and fetch me later?" Auic asked, her face could barely keep with her smile, one big and large.
 "Yes," he replied kindly, "-I'll try to be as regular as I can. Though, if something comes up, I'll make sure to send a message," he took out the phone, "-Is that alright?" 
 "Sound good," she took out hers and exchanged details. 
 "If I don't respond, contact Auic,"
 "Don't worry," Lizzie pouted, "-it's not like this is the first time I'm doing this."
 "I guess not," he chuckled then patted her head.
 "What are you doing up so early," Adete awoke from her slumber.
 "See for yourself," the car drove forth. An hour later, they arrived, the roads were jammed for the most part. A normal part of life here. 
 "Here we are," he voiced, the car came to a slow stop before the gate. 
 "Check that car out," the students pointed at Void, "-it must be so expensive," they commented. "Whoever that student is, must come from a rich family – I'd not be surprised if they were royalty," the chatter came from a group of students that waited for their comrades to arrive. Judging by their tie, they were in the same grade as Lizzie.
 "I'll see you later," Staxius said to which the door opened.
 "Later," she replied with a joyful smile, "-don't forget to call if anything happens," her head tilted to the right slightly, then pulled out a peace-sign, after which, she walked away.
 'I wonder who she learned that from,' the car sped forth. As opposed to reluctantly enter her classroom, Lizzie arrived with glee on her face. Being cared for by Staxius had done more than he'd thought. 
 'Now it's time to go buy the place where Kniq can finally live in peace. I wonder who should I call, Raulf or Cake,' parked underneath an array of trees lined on the sidewalk, Staxius leaned on the hood and had a cigar. Leaves from the branches fell slowly to the ground, it seemed as if snow, peaceful and idyllic. 
 *Beep,* the phone rang suddenly.
 "Hello?" he asked with no idea to who had called.
 "Good morning Staxius," a feminine voice spoke, "-it's me, Melisa," she voiced.
 "Is something the matter?" 
 "Yes, could you come by the guild as soon as possible, the guild master has requested thy presence." 
 "On my way," the phone hung. 'Must be the reward for all those monsters I have slain.' Rather than driving back, he teleported just shy of the guild, none noticed for it was done in an alley barely large enough to fit Void. 
 'What's this all about,' the car pulled up against the entrance, he stepped out. A crowd of adventurers waited and spoke as if something major had happened. "Pardon me," he called and made his way through the crowd. 
 'What the hell,' stood near the counter, Raulf crossed his arms and had a giant sword embedded into the floor. "None shall come forth till the Guild leader of Kniq has made himself present," he voiced strongly.
 "Have you called?" the voice monotonous and face unimpressed, he walked and stood before Raulf.
 "There you are," from serious, the face changed into one friendly, "-where have you been," they embraced. "We've got many things to discuss," the giant sword lifted as if feather. The man stepped away strongly. Baffled, Staxius stared Diane and Melisa in search of answers. The former shrugged whilst the latter mumbled, 'I don't know.' Obliged to follow, he continued. Behind, the gathering crowd rushed the counter since quests were displayed a few seconds earlier. 'This could not have come at a better time,' Staxius thought. The door opened – Raulf sat with a gentle smile. 


Thrust into an enigmatic world born from bloodshed; venture inside its complexities, dark-side, and always changing nature. At the center, a boy; brought up by an exiled mage, steps into a life of independence. A test to try and change his life for the better after witnessing what war can do to a person. The walk towards finding a stable living gets toppled as a unique magical element awakens. Using people, toying with emotions, doing anything and everything to get what he wants, this is the life of the next Death Reaper. Mostly emotionless, life continues as questions about his state of mind and being remains clouded behind many personas.

This isn’t the story of a single man, it’s the story of a whole world. Read as the world builds itself from the ground up. Conspiracies, evil, the dark side of humanity. In addition, tis the start of a new age; the birth of monsters – a story depicting the tales of the first heroes and demons to ever exist. 

The Wielder of Death Magic isn’t a typical fantasy. The heroes don’t summon forth power from heroes of old, here, the characters are the ones who make up the myths and legends for the next generation. Amidst the turmoil, Staxius, he lives on, watching and waiting as the world grows. 

P.S, I’m not that normal of a writer, my advice is to not expect anything going into this world. Forget everything, I personally, don’t care about rules and limitations and what can be considered to be the norm – the characters are given life, the world moves on its own; I’m just a spectator. No plot, nothing planned, all that you read is the product of the characters moving and acting individually. As opposed to me subjecting them with my emotions, the connection is reversed. They are the ones who dictate the story (Believe it or not, that's the way I write) A world, a story, characters, and the foolish author; we all evolve as one. Early the next morning.
The first thing that Zhang Zian saw when he opened his eyes was a blue-gray tail moving left and right under the curtains. Vladimir seemed to have woken up before the sun was up and it was just sitting on the window sill and looking outside.
Zian sat up and began to put on his clothes.
Vladimir poked its head out of the curtains and leaped lightly down from the window sill. The Russian Blue cat's body, which was completely different from the British shorthair, was clearly very agile.
"What time are we heading out today? My iron fist is already hungry and thirsty!" It clenched a front paw and was very excited.
"We don't have to rush this. Are you sure you don't need me to prepare a place for you to sleep?" Zhang Zian asked.
Before going to bed last night, Zhang Zian had planned to find an old blanket for it to temporarily sleep on. From there, he would find out what kind of bed it prefered before he bought it online. But it didn't really care and had turned down Zian's idea, then it chose a random spot to lie down and fell asleep.
"There's no need," Vladimir said with a forthright smile. "Those in our line have the four seas as our home, the sky as our blanket, the ground for our bed, a steel gun as our comrade-in-arms, and the grassland as our canteen. It's nothing exquisite, but it's enough as long as we have a place to shelter us from the wind and rain. Why would I need a bed?"
Zhang Zian was speechless. It really had a way with words.
Zian was a little worried that he was neglecting Vladimir, but he didn't expect it to really feel that it didn't have to sleep on a bed. Since it was forthright in character, Zian no longer had to worry about where it was going to sleep.
"Moreover, when I think of the hundreds and thousands of stray cats being bullied and oppressed outside, I can't sleep at ease on a bed," Vladimir said as it pointed towards the outside.
Old Time Tea had just woken up and happened to hear what Vladimir said. It then praised, "The worries of the world always comes first––punish oneself with a big cup of wine!"
Zhang Zian shook his head and smiled bitterly. If Vladimir wasn't joking, then the difference in their level of thoughts made him feel ashamed of himself. Although he knew that there were still many poor people in the world who couldn't eat and sleep, he still slept well when it was time to sleep…
After all, those things were too far away from him, and those poor people were just strangers to him. Zian knew himself, and he wouldn't make saving the poor people in the whole world his goal. Just like what Confucians often said: "Keep yourself safe when you're a nobody; however, give back to the world when you've become somebody."
Zian was currently in the position where he was keeping himself safe, and only when he was as rich as Father Ma would he consider giving to the world.
For those who were still thinking about the world when they couldn't save themselves were either mad men, were naive teenagers, or was a person––or cat––who actually could change the world…
At that time, the other elfins woke up one after another. Having spent a few days in the capital, especially the capital's attractions which encompass a great deal of space, they were all very tired. They had gone to bed early the night before and naturally woke up early that morning.
Pi jumped and skipped its way into the bathroom and washed its face, then jumped back on the chair and started to type away.
When Vladimir heard the typing sounds, it jumped up on the desk with no difficulty and put its face close to the screen. It stared at the Word document on the screen and asked, "I wanted to ask last night––what are you doing sitting in front of the computer all the time? Are you writing a novel? "
Pi was surprised, and it nodded nervously. "Zhi zhi."
Zhang Zian said on behalf of Pi, "Its name is Pi, and its currently working on a serialized online novel. Although it can't talk, you can communicate with Pi through its typing."
Pi was quite shy and it had an inferiority complex because it couldn't talk. The night before, when everyone was talking around Vladimir, Pi sat silently in front of the computer as it worked on its novel.
Vladimir gaped in amazement and said seriously, "Writing a novel? That's amazing!"
Pi embarrassedly typed, "It's not that good."
"No, no, it's awesome that you are able to write novels!" Vladimir said seriously. "I respect every writer. Each writer is like an engineer of the human soul."
Zhang Zian was speechless. I think I heard this sentence from my elementary school teacher, but I've already forgotten the source… Anyway, it couldn't have originated from the elementary school teacher. Although the sentence had often been used as "teachers are the engineer of the human soul," the actual original text was "writer."
Speaking of which, he kind of admired Vladimir. Each time it spoke, it easily recalled famous quotes.
Pi was even more embarrassed; it felt that it didn't deserve such praise.
"Keep it up. Once you complete this novel, I will read it," Vladimir encouraged. "But you should also pay attention to your health. Don't always sit still, and remember to rest. You rest so that you can work better. Don't jeopardize your own health. Novelists always want to care about 'the destiny of people,' but they always forget to care about their own destiny. This is their tragedy and you shouldn't embark on the old path of the predecessors."
Pi was a little confused, but it still nodded. Zhang Zian had also said similar words, though he didn't use such quotes.
"But," Vladimir changed his tone and became strict, "Now, many human beings have lost their noble souls and have become despicable and shameless, bullying creatures that are weaker than them. For such reactionaries, we must throw away all imaginations and prepare for a fight!"
Even though its words were impassioned, the problem was that some of the elfins couldn't understand it, and others didn't care.
Fina yawned and rubbed its sleepy eyes, "This queen also feels that some humans are no longer able to recognize their own position. Now, they even have the gall to climb above the cat family. They must be disciplined!" As it spoke, it coldly swept its gaze at Zhang Zian.
Zhang Zian interjected, "Wait a minute, Vladimir, you don't fully understand the situation, since you've just arrived. Indeed, the incidents of cat abuse in Binhai City have been happening frequently and are slowly spreading across the whole country. There's also a related QQ group chat on the Internet where the group owner has muted all chat functions only to publicly stream a cat abusing video for fun… But there's a deeper reason for all this."
Vladimir glued its eyes on Zian and listened carefully.
Zhang Zian continued, "In the past, there have been occasional cat abuse incidents occurring in most areas, but none of them were as serious as the one now. This time, it's a concentrated outbreak over a short period of time. It is completely different from previous situations and can't simply be attributed to humans. I don't mean to make up excuses for humans by saying this, after all, the ones abusing the cats are indeed humans. But there's someone pulling the strings behind this series of cat abuse incidents, and that is a Holy Cat statue from ancient Egypt."
"Holy Cat statue?" Vladimir was both surprised and confused. "The Holy Cat statue has such an ability?"
"It's a long story. The statue isn't the real thing, but a vivid imitation, and it was given to me as a gift from someone. Initially, it was just an ordinary decoration, but god knows what happened. It suddenly disappeared…"
Zhang Zian told Vladimir about the Holy Cat statue, including the part about him, Old Time Tea, Famous, and Galaxy tracking it to the unfinished building. Although they had missed the Holy Cat statue, through reasonable speculations, they were able to make out what had happened earlier. The Holy Cat statue had kept itself hidden in the dark as it observed how the cat abusers abused the cat for their own enjoyment.
"I suspect that, as an elfin that's in the process of materializing, the Holy Cat statue may be able to influence and manipulate the mind of human beings to a certain extent. So ordinary people with psychological problems would bring out their bloodthirsty side, and as the process of the cat abuse gets bloodier and crueler, it will become stronger." Zhang Zian shared his own speculations.
Old Time Tea and Famous both agreed with his point of view and added some of their own thoughts accordingly.
"I see."
As a witness of the incident, whenever Zhang Zian recalled the scene at that time, he couldn't help but feel creeped out. However, Vladimir was still calm after hearing the story. It laughed and said, "So, the reason why all of you are behaving so cautiously is because of that Holy Cat statue? That's it?"
Zhang Zian was speechless yet again. He then exchanged glances with Old Time Tea and Old Time Tea shook its head slightly. Although it was fond of how Vladimir worried about the world, Old Time Tea found the words that Vladimir had just used to be too arrogant.
With good intentions, Old Time Tea interjected from the side. "You should never underestimate your opponent! The Holy Cat statue is extremely ferocious, and its whereabouts are erratic and strange. This will inevitably lead to a great disaster… The most important thing is that it seems to exist between life and death. It's neither a living thing nor a dead thing, so what is it and what can we do about it?"
"Hahaha!" Vladimir laughed towards the sky, then raised a front paw and slammed it on the ground. "Although I have never seen the Holy Cat statue, I know that all the reactionaries are just paper tigers that hold no threat!"
Zhang Zian also wanted to persuade it not to underestimate the enemy, but just as he was about to, he heard it say, "You can rest assured that I would never underestimate the enemy. Zian then dismissed the idea of ​​persuading it because he felt that its statement was somewhat reasonable.
Ever since the Holy Cat statue had ravaged Binhai City, both he and the elfins would turn pale whenever the Holy Cat statue was brought up. It was not that Old Time Tea's standard and awareness wasn't high, but it was because Old Time Tea had always been a lone ranger. It was better at thinking about problems on an individual and tactical level, while Vladimir thought from a higher level and set its sights further and wider, just like a strategist that examined the issue from a strategic perspective.
Zhang Zian recalled when Old Time Tea and Famous snuck into Love Lovely Pets Breeding Base and, out of a moment of outrage, they took action and released all the pets that were being treated unfairly in the breeding base. However, they didn't consider the arrangements for all those pets, and as a result, many of the cats and dogs had become homeless. Objectively speaking, that was also the trigger for the current cat abuse incident.
If Vladimir was there at the time, it would have definitely looked at the problem from all angles, then it would have made a plan and moved forward with it. It would not act hastily, like how Old Time Tea and Famous did.

After wasting half the morning at the bank, they returned to find Cassandane being interrogated by Secret Service agents. That continued for almost an hour before Cassandane made it clear her patience had been exhausted and that she would not hesitate to walk away from the meeting with their president. Then, when they were clear of government agents, Varanelli informed Cassandane that the Canadian government wanted to meet with them and bring some representatives from the United Nations. They had a conference call to make arrangements for Cassandane to fly back to New York for a meeting -- by fly, the Canadians meant sitting on a plane instead of zipping around with the kinetic talent.
Then came lunch, with all the complaints that entailed. Mike tried to disarm the hostility to the PB & J sandwiches, but no one seemed thrilled. Neither was he. Due to their morning chores he had lost out on one-on-one training with Cassandane. That meant a day lost in his preparations to survive whoever Nallit threw at him. He suspected a small army would ambush him. At least, he hoped that would be the path of his enemies. Being poisoned or having his throat slashed in his sleep seemed unsporting.
He gathered up two sandwiches and hesitated while he studied his seating options. The ex-Army table did not look inviting, considering both Smith and Varanelli were upset with him for putting an end to any future shenanigans while on duty. The MMA table had been crashed by Woodrow, who Mike didn't want to spend any further time with that day. Srinivas, Tracy, and Joe the cop were playing some sort of game together using their phones. That just left the table Cassandane sat at by herself using the organziation laptop for research of some sort and the table with Sam and Jess. Probably best to just sit down by himself.
"Hey, Mike!"
He looked over at Jess. "Hey, Jess, how's the gourmet food?"
"Get over here. I have questions."
As Mike sank down into a chair, he got the distinct impression that Sam did not want him there. Too late. Jess had slid her chair closer. "So what is the real story behind New York?"
"It's a big ole' city."
"Come on, Ski! Do you mind if I call you Ski?"
Mike shrugged. "Mike, Ski, Dombroski, I respond to any of those. As far as New York was concerned . . . it was a shit show. An absolute shit show. Almost died at the airport. Almost didn't catch the building in time. Almost died facing off with Nallit. Almost died of embarrassment on national television."
"What? I thought your interview was great. 'Catching a building is harder than it looks.' I'll bet they put it on t-shirts."
"Bunch of kids would probably wear it ironically, whatever that means," Mike said.
Jess spread her hands wide. "Picture this. Empire State Building screenprinted in profile over a flying stick figure poised to catch it. Then the quote underneath that. It would sell. Especially if we made it official EDA swag."
"Official swag? That's not a bad idea, actually. Minus the me quotes, of course."
"EDA swag. Who is our official merchandise person? Can it be me?"
Mike's eyes darted between the intense Jess and the apathetic Sam. "Hey, Centurion Sam, is something bothering you?"
Sam didn't respond, but Jess seemed to notice her friend's mood for the first time. "Oh no. We went over twelve hours without a Star Wars allusion, didn't we? Dead inside, have you become?"
"Not in the mood," Sam muttered.
"The bank stuff ruined my morning, too," Mike said. "If you thought a bank would give special treatment to superheroes with a very tiny amount of money, you would be wrong. It's all about the dollar signs with those people."
"The bank was fine. It's everything else," Sam said. Her eyes drifted to the side as she said that, causing both Mike and Jess to follow her gaze to the ex-army table.
Mike didn't see the significance of the movement, but Jess obviously did. Her eyes narrowed. "Mike? Is your friend Kendra dating anyone?"
"Let's not do this," Sam said, coming to life.
A chair scraped as Cassandane joined their table. "What are you objecting to?"
"Nothing," Sam said.
Jess gestured to Varanelli. "Is she dating anyone?"
"Varanelli and Smith are a thing."
Jess raised her brows. "Greg Smith?"
"I know, right? He's the guy everyone suspects uses mascara."
Cassandane raised a hand to cover a smile while Jess chuckled. Sam rolled her eyes. "Sounds you like you might be jealous."
"Of Smith? More like confused. If you put a wig on him, he would be prettier than half the girlfriends I ever had."
"That doesn't surprise me," Sam said.
"I'm going to New York for a few days," Cassandane interrupted. "Mike will be in overall command. Do not allow the training to slow down in my absence. Sam will push basic competencies and Mike will emphasize combat applications. There should be minimal risk of reprisals this soon, but stay on guard."
Sam blinked. "Reprisals?"
"Nallit put a price on my head," Mike said. "It sounds like a bad thing until you realize the alternative was being tortured to death."
"Are assassins coming for all of us or just you two?"
Cassandane shook her head. "Just Mike. He killed Nallit. Temporarily."
"I make new friends everywhere I go." Mike winked at Sam.
"It's not funny, Mike. You're probably going to die."
"Nice to see you concerned for my welfare, Sam."
"Very concerned. I would rather not be put in charge of combat operations." Sam scowled at Cassandane. "Do you have to leave?"
"A coalition of nations has expressed a willingness to recognize us as an intergovernmental organization in exchange for hosting students from member nations at a ratio determined by their Security Council. An agreement will ensure the funding and the legitimacy of the Earth Defense Army. We cannot afford to pass up this opportunity."

The universe is a strange place.  First the stars in the sky began to change, twinkling out to be replaced by stars identical to the sun.  Then an alien fleet appeared in the solar system, decelerating without obeying the laws of physics.  None of that prepared the world for what was to follow when the aliens revealed themselves to be English-speaking humans.

The wooden planks underneath gleamed a warm color and environing him were dozens of bookshelves. He was supposed to have woken up from his bed. Where was this? Was he still dreaming?
He looked up at the high ceiling and caught sight of winding staircases leading to the first floor. Bright chandeliers lit up the place, so he had no problem trying to grasp where he had ended up.
"...A library."
He could feel his heart thumping loudly against his chest. Cold sweat appeared on his skin, making him uncomfortable.
"...I have to get out of here."
With long strides, Klaus made his way to one side of the library and found a large double wooden door. Yes, an exit! Elated with this finding, he leaned against the door and brought down his weight to open it.
"Ughh... It's not budging!"
He was trapped. This fact couldn't be any clearer to him. With a loud sigh, he turned around to find another way to escape the place, but just then, a golden light flashed before him.
"What?" By the time Klaus realized it, he was sitting on a luxury couch, bookshelves forming a circle around him. Sitting on a golden chair ten feet away, an elderly in a red dress looked at him with a smile. Her dress had different shades of red lazily daubed on it.
"Hey, what's happening!?"
His body wouldn't move, and he couldn't stand up much less ran away from that weird woman. He must still be in a dream!
Slowly, the woman lifted a thick green book with an intricate golden pattern on its cover with one hand. This book unconsciously caught Klaus's attention, and he read the title on the cover.
"...We are a family, aren't we?"
He felt a throbbing pain in his head.
"This is an unexpected encounter, isn't it?" said the woman. "It must be fate that decided this course. Your destiny must be waiting for you."
"What are you talking about?"
"Freda. You've met her."
"...?!"
"Hehe, this is also an unexpected encounter for both of you. You might have realized it, but things might get interesting from here on out. Be prepared, Klaus Weber. Then, until we meet again."

"Wah!"
Klaus got up from his bed with a scream, followed by Aoi's momentary shriek.
It was already morning. Curious as to why Klaus didn't come down from his room, Aoi had taken the initiative to wake him up herself. She placed her hand over her chest and breathed a long sigh.
Again, her expression didn't change in the slightest.
"Why are you in your school uniform?" asked Klaus.
"It's already seven forty. If you don't get up now, we'll be late for school."
"Eek! Wake me up sooner!" Klaus sprinted towards the bathroom and did his morning routine as fast as he could. He skipped breakfast so that Aoi wouldn't have to wait for him any longer.
"You had quite a pleasant dream," said Aoi as they walked together to school.
"Is that a joke? We cannot destroy kindred: our chains stretch a little sometimes, but they never break."
"A quote by Marquise de Sevigne? Again, your follow up doesn't correlate at all. Don't pull out random quotes like that."
"It's not random!" Klaus puffed his chest. "You should be lucky that you have a family of your own. I always want to know what it feels like to have a complete family."
"...Am I not a part of your family?"
"You're a good friend."
"We've known each other for a long time," said Aoi, her voice raised slightly.
Klaus pondered for a moment. "A family doesn't have to be related by blood. But those who are related by blood have that special connection. Their bond will never be severed."
"...You're an idiot. Talking about families and all this nonsense. What's so great about having a family anyway?"
Creases formed on Aoi's forehead as she furrowed her eyebrows. She was furious.
Aoi ignored Klaus as they went to their classroom. After these two had taken their seat, the morning bell echoed throughout the school compound. Ah, the first lesson was science, wasn't it?
"Hey... sorry, Aoi," Klaus muttered to his best friend in the seat in front of him.
"..."
"I'll tell you about my dream during the lunch break. How about it? Spoiler alert, I was trapped in a library."
"...Tell me more about it during the lunch break."
Aoi's response brought a smile on Klaus's face. He always knew when he had hurt his best friend's feelings.
As promised, during lunch break, Klaus explained in detail to Aoi about his dream. They had placed their yakisoba bread on Klaus's desk as they faced each other. It was worth noting that Klaus's explanation at first seemed unrealistic, but it was a dream, so Aoi quickly brushed that thought off her mind.
"How did she know about your younger sister Freda?" Aoi decided to play along naturally.
"That's the thing! I'd never seen that woman before in my life. Is she my great great great grandmother, reminding me of my family? I knew she wanted to bring up that memory when they...."
"It's a dream. Don't get too absorbed into it. Anyway, have you found a clue as to who had sent the letter?"
"Now that you're mentioning it... I don't have any!"
Aoi expected this much. Though, they could just ignore the letter as they went about their daily life. Quite frankly, Klaus was beginning to forget about it before the girl reminded him.
During the afternoon school session, their female homeroom teacher brought up about the clubs' participation deadline. The students' involvement is a must, with no exception to status nor health. Simply put, participating in club activities were mandatory.
"Hey, you still haven't joined a club yet?"
A male student sitting next to Klaus asked him this question. He had quite a muscular physique, of which, when combined with his tall stature and spiky hair, made him appear quite intimidating.
He had that natural delinquent look going for him.
"...Ah, you don't know me, yeah? Well, the school just started a few weeks ago, but still, you should remember my name by now. I'm Nishihara Ryota. Just call me Ryo."
"N-nice to meet you, Ryo. I'm Klaus Weber. Just call me Klaus."
"Aha, a foreigner! Anyway, how about you join the basketball club? You look like you need some exercise."
That was quite blunt of him. Klaus didn't pay to much attention to that remark. He had no intention to join a club anytime soon. Back in middle school, he was club-less. There was no need to change that habit now.
"Don't think, just join!"
The corner of Klaus's mouth twitched when Ryo pulled his chair close to him. Personal space! Have you heard about it!?

Every night when certain individuals close their eyes and start sleeping, they are pulled into a place called "The Personal Dimensions". During their stay there, they are capable of manipulating the contents of the dimension to their whim. However, evil creatures called Draugrs appear to prey on these humans, forcing them to defend themselves with the help of an entity to guide them.

The first month of his first year of high school, Klaus Weber encountered a conspicuous, blond middle school student Tsujihara J. Freda; however, she appears to know Klaus despite him having no memories of her.

Soon after the encounter, Klaus is discovered to have been "reincarnated" and is able to enter the Personal Dimensions, and to fight the Draugrs invading the place. Recruiting those who are reincarnated as well to find the truth as to why they were reincarnated, Klaus now has to balance his school life, his social life and his new dungeon-crawling life.

Ye Han spent then whole night reading a Light novel while looking at Ais from time to time, he wondered if he should make light novels when they go to a modern-day world. But he shrugs that thought off as he still hasn't decided what world they should go to next. it was like 5 am in the morning before Ais's eyelids started to tremble. Ye Han notices the movement so he went closer to Ais as she started to open her eyes, the first thing she notices was Ye Han who was staring at her. She said 

"Who are you?"
"I am Ye Han, so little girl what do you remember?"
"I...."
Ais stop speaking as she remembers her memories, tears started to form in her eyes as she remembers how her dad fought and lured the Black Dragon back to the dungeon while her pale mother put her into a crystal coffin, she stutteringly said

"Mom....Dad...."
"There...There"
Ye Han hugged Ais as he gently rubs her back, while she cried. Ye Han was worried that her memories would make her very gloomy so he tried to think of a solution to make her happy. After a few minutes of crying, she looks at Ye Han as he said

"I have seen your mother."
Ye Han showed her his memories of how he defeated the dragon and saw her mother, Ais cried once more as she saw how her mother talk to Ye Han before resting in peace. Ye Han sighed as he stayed in that position for a few more minutes, he looks at gloomy Ais as her stomach growl. Ye Han carried her in one arm as he went to the kitchen and made breakfast for four people, Ais wraps her arm around Ye Han's neck as she slowly calms down. 

Ye Han took a spoon of soup from the pot as he gave Ais a taste, this was the first time she tasted something very delicious. It decreases her gloomy state as she tightens her hand wrap around his neck, Ye Han just put the spoon down as the food simmers on the table and gently pat Ais's back as he whispers in her ears

"Don't worry, I take care of you from now on. "
Ais calms down as Ada went down while carrying Lili in her shoulder, Lili was still sleeping as she had her arms wrap around her neck while leaning her head onto Ada's shoulder. Ada said gently 

"Good morning dear...Oh, my, who is this little girl?"
"This is Ais, she will be our second daughter."
Ais looks at Ada  who was carrying Lili, Ada smiled as she gently put her hand on Ais cheek as she said

"Well Ais, welcome to the family."
She could feel the gentle and caring aura from Ada's touch and voice, she slowly lowers her guard as her gloomy state decreases. Ye Han placed the dishes onto the dining table as Ada put Lili onto her chair while waking her up, Lili opens her eyes as she saw a blond hair girl holding her papa on the neck. She exclaimed

"Papa! Who is that girl?!"
"This is Ais, your new sister....Be nice to her..."
Lili's eyes glows as she looks at her new sister when she thought how much fun her lifes gonna be with a playmate. Lili rarely went out as she was forbidden to go outside unless Ye Han or Ada went out with her, so seeing Ais made her feel joy as Ais looks at Lili with curiosity. Ye Han puts Ais onto a chair beside Lili as he went back to his seat beside Ada, he said

"Eat, you must be famished..."
Ais started to eat the meat dish, the moment she tried out the meat dish, her eating started to increase as her cheeks became like a chipmunk eating a lot of nuts. Ye Han and Ada chuckle as he pours her water, Lili feeling determination in her eyes she started to eat in the same speed as Ais, on the other hand, Ais could feel the rivalry of her new sister and started to increase her speed. Ye Han pours another serving in their plates as they drink the water in their glass. He reprand them in a gentle tone 

"Slow down, this is not a competition it just breakfasts..."
Ada chuckles as their daughters lower their heads in embarrassment. after breakfast, Ye Han gave Lili a magic crystal as Lili marvel onto the bright dark blue crystal. He said to Lili and Ada as he carried Ais

"I will be back for lunch, please cook more meat dish."
"Yes, Papa! I will remind Mama to cook more meat!"
"Ok, darling. See you later *Mua*"
Ye Han gave Lili and Ada a kiss before carrying Ais to the commentary, he went to the grave keeper and bought a piece of land in the graveyard. He then erected two tombstones and wrote down Ai's parents with quotes " A loving father who gave his life to save his beloved daughter." while Aira's quote was "A mother who sacrificed her authority for her beloved daughter.", Ye Han then gave them a silent prayer as Ais cried a bit while holding one of Ye Han's hand.  He said 

"Let us wish that they will have a peaceful life in their next life."
Ais nodded as she continues to cry, Ye Han pats her head with his remaining hand. After a few minutes, Ais's eye started to shine with the determination of becoming an adventurer. As she always wanted to become like her father, a strong adventurer who saved the lives of people from monsters. Ye Han then carried her in his shoulder as they went to the Hostess of Fertility.

Our Lazy 17 years old MC "Ye Han" died of a heart attack. Luckily while he was being judged by God. God decided to give him a chance to reincarnate to another world with 7 wishes

If one could blast that TV off with their eyes, their cabin would have already been engulfed by the smoke and the floor would have been filled with its shattered pieces by now. 


However, one thing to be noticed and which has made Louis sigh in relief is the fact that she isn't sad or distraught seeing her ex-fiancé.


To be accurate, she is actually angry. So fucking angry and very agitated that she had to see him during such a beautiful time of her morning. 


Which also means that she hates him so much and that she doesn't even have a single ounce of love left for Nickolas. 

She isn't trying to be nostalgic thinking of her previous love and relationship. 


She just has Louis in her heart.

"Lemme turn off the TV." Louis said after a while, parting off from their hug. 


He is about to make his way when Brina stopped him. "It doesn't matter now and I no longer care bout him, when especially I have such an understanding and loving boyfriend hugging me. It is just that, whenever I see that face I feel like stabing him and burning him to death." Brina said, hugging Louis back. 


Louis smiled at her cheesy and as well as venomuos words. Turning around he hugged her to his broad chest, disabling her from seeing that face ofvher ex fiancé anymore. 

 "Though you don't mind about him, I do mind because it still hurts me tremendously when I see the pained expression on my baby girl's face." he said, lifting her in princess style. 


He then depositions her on the Wisden chair near the kitchen table and turned around to off the TV. 


"So, Harry told about him?" Brina asked when he returned back and sat down across from her. 


"Yes. He did. But not too detailed. I just got to know the outlines of it." Louis said smiling and kissed the back of her palm before entwining their fingers together. 


"Hmm.. as expected." Brina muttered to herself. 


But she isn't feeling opposed by Harry's doings. He is actually helped her by doing it. Since, she also not ready to talk bout herself to Louis. 


"Just to let you know, I will never leave you. Regardless of how complex and dangerous your life might turn out, I'll always be with you, holding your hands just like this." Louis said, kissing their entwined fingers. 

"So, don't hesitate to show all your emotions in front of me" Louis told. 


They just sat like that, enjoying each other's warmth and love. Even Brina's mood got a lot better because of Louis and his sincere words. 

She felt so lucky to have him in her life. Or else, she would lost her belief in a feeling of being loved. 


Engulfed in his love, Brina took a glance at him. And, she remembered something. 


Why is he always the one who assures her? 


Was it the reason why he is still backing off in confessing something about himself? 

He isn't asking for time like she did. On the contrary, he was trying to tell but some fear is pulling him back. 


Scolding herself for being such a selfish person, Brina stood up and went around the table to sit on his lap. 


She hooked her arms around his neck and kissed him. Baffled by her sudden initiation Louis paused andstared at her with confusion but started returning back her kiss. 


However, what she spoke subsequently made him the happiest man. 


"I will not leave you too. No matter what your secret is." she said while caressing his cheek. 
"You can tell everything to me too." 


Needless to say, they got engaged in kissing each other till the burning smell from the kitchen wafted into their nose.

Soon one week has passed, and they are already in the midway of their vacation.


Even Brina's bruises and scars have mostly faded away. She is now a lot more better and her ankle also have gotten relieved from its sprain. 


So, taking her condition into a consideration. Louis at last agreed to go to the carnival that is happening in the town nearby. 


After a lot of effort she got approval and Brina is totally excited. It is because this is her first time going to such a place with her boyfriend.

 She has been to some of the festivals like these in these few years and whenever she used to come across a happy and simple couple enjoying their moment together, she used to imagine how it would be if she had simple life as them. 


Now that her wish is at last getting fulfilled, that too with the person she loves the most, Brina is overly excited. 

This whole week with him are the best days she has ever spent in these few years however, she doesn't know that this simple trip to carnival would change a lot of her assumptions about Louis. 


"Brina baby, are you done?" Louis asked as he knocked on the bathroom door. 


In these ten days, he even helped her in her head bath twice. First time, she was so shy that she was fully dressed. After a few days of being intimate in constant making out, her shyness have reduced a bit. However, she covered all the bathtub with extra foam and didn't forget to wear her lingerie.

A year later.....

It's late December, I took 2 weeks off to visit Tiere at Jakarta, staying at her apartment. Tiere told me she loves her job and she made a lot of money. I'm so happy that I let her chase her dreams. And I, I finally got to work at my dream game company, was accepted right after a month dating Tiere. She's like a lucky charm to me.

The sun shining through the open curtain, I woke up before the alarm start beeping. I turned it off once it rang cause it's Sunday, I leaned forward looking at the peaceful looks of Tiere while she's sleeping, drooling on her pillow, greasy hair, and her messy waterproof makeup, did she forget to wash her face or? I use my thumb to wipe her eye –shadow but I didn't make it, for me she's always beautiful, my lips lifted upward I feel warm in my heart as it beats faster cause I realize how much I love her. Somehow it's so calming and my heart is melting. I leaned my head forward again, kiss her lips once and she pouted. "I want to sleeeppppp" she said, tossing her body to the other side. I laid back on the bed, hug her from behind. 

"Good morning, my dear" I whispered. I heard her sniffing smiles. Then my phone ruined my Sunday.

I sit up to catch my phone, my mom's picture popped up. DAMN! SHE IS VIDEO CALLING ME RIGHT NOW? I LIED TO HER! But it's okay, I am 24 years old. BUT NO, JUST PRETEND I'M IN THE HOTEL.

I click the green button soon as my mom's face close up-ly appeared. I was kind of shock, my heart start pumping fast, throbbing behind my ribs, it's going to crack soon.

"Hii.. Mom" my jaw turns rigid. 

"Hey, so, you're at Jakarta?" my mom asked, still smiling.  

I nod my head, "Yes"

"Huh.. it's so hard to ask you to come to Miami, but when it is about Tiere, you arrived soon as she asked" 

I told my mom about Tiere and my mom was so happy about it. I don't know she used to ship me with Tiere since grade –school. I don't understand my mom sometimes. 

"Mom..." I rolled my eyes. 

"So where's she?"

"She is beside me..ups" I covered my mouth, DAMN! MY MOM PURPOSELY SHIFT MY CONCENTRATION.

Her smile disappeared, her face turned scary. THIS IS THE END OF MY LIFE!

"HAA!! YOU!!! Bastard! You slept with TIERE?? YOU DARE LIED TO ME?? YOU WANNA GET MARRIED SOON, HUH?" 

"Momm.. mom... listen" like usually....

Back to that time.

Once I've done my confessions towards Tiere, I walked back to my car light –heartedly. I feel happy and relieved at the same time.

It's Caroline. Oh, I really forgot about her! I was kinda shock.

It turned her speechless, maybe I sound pathetic but not too pathetic that makes her confused. Ah, not a big deal.

She has a dark past during her school time, students like to judge her, but since graduated from high school she did some improvements of her both appearance and her image that makes her prettier in the present time. At the cafeteria, Claire, Kyla and myself dined over excerpts from famous philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli. On the table were a cup of warm coffee and a few doughnuts.

Claire, an avid coffee drinker, took a sip on the cup. Then she took a fork, grabbed a piece of the doughnuts and ate it.

"Sweet," Claire admitted to us. "The sugary feel of the doughnuts makes my day."

Every seat inside the cafeteria had been taken by students, employees and customers alike. Even the wireless internet connection was wildly inconsistent as it could not contain the heavy volume of users.

With my laptop, Claire's tablet and Kyla's smartphone on hand, we took notes and dissected one particular quote from Machiavelli. 

"It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both."

In between, Claire sipped some more coffee and chewed on a few slices of doughnuts. Meanwhile, Kyla brought out some mints and put it on her mouth.

What the professor gave to us was a group project about a quote from Niccolò Machiavelli. We were free to choose any one of his quotes and explain it thoroughly on a sheet of paper.

"What do you think?" Claire inquired Kyla and myself about the quotation. 

"Personally, what Machiavelli said was typical of a dictator ruling with an iron fist," Kyla commented. "Look at Ferdinand Marcos. He possesses many friends, but because of Martial Law, he became an extremely intimidating ruler."

"Same with the likes of Hitler and Lenin," I replied. "Machiavelli's passage applies to the totalitarian rule of a few countries. Those whose power is too imposing and unyielding at the same time."

"In my opinion, this quote is also applicable to corporations and families too," Claire joined in. "If you have a father who seems to care about your well-being but shows some tough love as well, then that's a Machiavellian way of putting it in context."

All three of us typed our respective explanations on my laptop. Then Kyla brought out her USB stick and saved the file on it.

"I'll be printing out the sheet for our group," Kyla notified us. "But since the deadline is not until Wednesday we could chat and continue delivering our contributions online. Is that all right with you?"

"No problem with us," Claire replied affirmatively. 

We continued talking over our project when a sudden vibration shook my pocket. That turned out to be my smartphone ringing. 

"Girls, I'm sorry but my class comes in a few minutes," my voice trembled in desperation. "We'll talk later."

I hurriedly ran out of the cafeteria without even saying goodbye to Claire and Kyla. My heart suddenly beat fast upon racing to the classroom.

By the time I arrived, my body had been sweating and weary. Making matters worse was the unusually hot weather that we experienced that day.

I sat inside the classroom exhausted, my heart rate rapidly increasing by the minute. As Michelle entered the room, she looked at me with a worried expression on her face.

"Christine, you look tired," Michelle remarked thoughtfully upon sitting down beside me. "What's the matter?"

"It's nothing," I answered wearily, my voice slurry with all the rapid breathing. 

"Christine, would you like some water?" Michelle offered me her jug. "You must be running out of breath."

I received Michelle's jug and gobbled some of the water. Upon wiping my mouth, I gradually breathed deeply to relax.

Michelle then used her towel and wiped the sweat off my face. 

"Christine, are you okay?" she asked me.

"I'm fine now," my deep voice replying to Michelle. "I had to run straight to class just to avoid getting late."

"Actually it's only 11:15 on the clock," Michelle showed me her watch. "You're five minutes early, but that's enough."

While waiting for photography class to start, I messaged Kyla and apologized for not immediately saying goodbye to her and Claire earlier. She replied with, "It's okay. We understand your situation", before closing with a pair of smiling faces with halo emoji.

"Any assignments?" I asked Michelle upon staring at her.

"You should be lucky that there were no projects this week," Michelle replied. "But I do possess some notes from the previous lectures. You might require them."

"I indeed do," my direct response to Michelle's generous offer. "Good thing there were no assignments due for this class so time is absolutely on my side."

Just then, Taylor and Erin arrived, and sat alongside Michelle and myself. Shortly after, the professor entered the classroom as well.

"Good morning students," the professor greeted us. 

"Good morning madam," the whole class typically responded in unison. 

"Today we're not having photography class in this classroom," the professor announced. "Instead we are moving to the studio for a little orientation on modeling photography."

"Did you hear that?" Michelle exclaimed to us. "We're going to the studio."

"Great," Taylor answered back. "I always dreamed to be a model."

"So do I," Erin joined in. 

The entire class walked downstairs and into the studio. It was situated on the second floor and was constructed next to the equipment and audio-visual room.

Upon entering the studio, the professor again assigned us into nine groups of four. This time, however, Michelle, Taylor, Erin and I found ourselves in different groups.

As Michelle and I went our separate ways for the project, she issued me one final reminder.

"Christine, remember to coexist with our other classmates," Michelle said to me. "Try being respectful and friendly with them all the time."

With one final nod of approval, I went to my assigned group while Michelle walked towards hers. The group I joined in consisted of three charming ladies and myself.

Surprisingly, they accepted me with open arms. It was a surreal experience because for much of my life, Michelle and myself would constantly be in the same group.

But then I recalled first grade when my teacher forced me to join a group with one of the bullies. However, the situation now is different as we were more mature and refined with our movements.

"Welcome to the group," the three students enthusiastically greeted me.

Now I must deal these strangers with renewed determination and positivity. God please help me.

The odds of getting a half-tuition scholarship to a top thirty school were incredibly low. Katie told her to go get a great education, get a well-paying job, and buy them some prime real estate. 
Abby was fairly sure she was joking but it was nice to dream. Georgia did have some great real estate for a fraction of the cost it would have been in Arizona. But Katie was a homebody; she would never want to leave their hometown of Scottsdale. 
She had chosen to go to school at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, which was less than forty minutes from their apartment. Abby knew why; she didn't want to leave her behind. Their parents passed away when they were eighteen and fifteen respectively. 
With a solid life insurance policy left behind and the ability to sell the house, Katie had been able to keep custody of her little sister. But it had been harder for her than she was willing to let on. 
All of those health problems she hadn't fully been able to hide had hit her freshman year as she was still dealing with grief from losing her parents and struggling to deal with a moody teenage girl. One of the main reasons Abby went away for school was that she wanted to get a good job and help pay her sister back for everything she did for them. 
Katie barely managed to finish school and got a crappy part-time job because of her health issues. Abby had been across the country for most of her chronic illness progression but it was still terrible watching the person she loved most slowly waste away. 
Her sister had always been so vibrant and full of life with a ridiculous sense of humor. She should be running around outside somewhere beckoning for Abby to follow her lead like when they were younger, not cooped up inside a tiny apartment because of pain. 
She answered the phone apprehensively, hoping that it was something as simple as Katie losing her phone and calling to let her know she wouldn't be contactable for a while. 
"Hello, am I speaking to the next of kin of Katrina Pullman?" a sympathetic female voice asked. 
Abby's heart stopped beating. No. No way. Katie had gotten a phone call exactly like this when their parents died. This couldn't be happening!
"Yes," she said faintly. "What happened?"
"I'm terribly sorry to tell you this but a woman we believe to be Katrina was in a terrible car accident and is currently in critical condition. She was driving her car and had her ID and credit cards in her purse. Are you able to come fill out some paperwork on her behalf?"
Critical condition. She was still alive! Abby's heart restarted. It was going to be okay. Katie would be fine. 
"I'm in Atlanta at the moment but I'll be on the next flight," she promised. 
'C'mon Katie,' Abby thought desperately. 'Just hang in there until I get to you. You're going to be fine.'
She booked the first flight out, not caring that it cost her nearly $300, and touched down in Phoenix around 11 PM. Despite her exhaustion she rushed straight to the ER and asked about her sister. 
A man in scrubs came out to talk to her and led her quietly to an empty hallway. "Are you Katrina Pullman's sister?" he asked. 
Abby nodded around the lump in her throat. This did not sound promising. Desperation made her voice crack. "How is she?"
"I am terribly sorry to tell you this…but she lost too much blood and received irreversible damage to her brain. We couldn't do anything to help her. She was declared legally dead two hours ago."
Dead. Dead! She couldn't be! Abby had texted her this morning while she was in the waiting room for her doctor's appointment. This wasn't possible. 
She sunk to her knees and couldn't prevent herself from sobbing so hard she thought she would crack in half. Her heart certainly had. Sure, she had friends at school but Katie was the only family she had left. Now she was completely alone. 
Her sweet sister who pushed herself too hard despite being so sick all the time would never tease her again. Had Abby even said 'I love you' when signing off this morning? When was the last time she had said it? 
After coming all this way Abby still didn't get to say goodbye. Katie had died completely alone. 
She finally pulled herself together after a while to go see her sister's body. Her expression was completely blank and her eyes were closed. This thing didn't look like her sister at all. 
The mortician promised to make her look pretty for the funeral. He gently told Abby that because her sister had been an organ donor that multiple people's lives were saved, as if it that was any consolation.
 Katie was gone. Yet her heart, kidneys, liver, and who knows what else would live on in other people. 
Abby had been totally creeped out when Katie said she was going to be an organ donor. She had shrugged it off, saying "well I won't need them anymore, will I? May as well help somebody else out."
She never would have imagined that it actually would have happened this way. Organ donation only occurred under very specific circumstances. The body had to be hooked up to a respirator when the brain died for it to even work. 
Katie's body had still been alive for a little while even though everything that made her Katie was already gone. That big beautiful brain full of random facts and movie quotes had died. How could this have happened?
