My process is to write the chapter (usually 3 chapters at a time) and then to read them through immediately before I upload the official chapter on WN and RR. A: So some of the answer is too spoilery to explain right now, but to answer as best as I can… Noone's race (the race of Tapestry) was once human. But they spent so long underground and influenced by their inheritance that they evolved to be something different entirely while the outside world passed them by.
(The original character of Noone I made was for a dnd campaign years ago, and his design (as well as the design of the people of Tapestry) are heavily influenced by the "Earth Genasi" race in 5e)

Joshua smiled with satisfaction as he leaned back in his piloting chair inside his personal simulator pod. After months of grinding up the ranks, he finally broke past the Bronze League and entered the Silver League. For a teenager of his age, reaching such a height was impressive. Only the top 3% of the potentates in his grade matched or surpassed this result.

"Aw man, you've finally promoted. Looks like we won't be playing together for a while." Triceratopsss whined over the comm.

Joshua, or TheSeventhSnake in the game, smiled back at his friend. "Hey, at least you won't be taking too long to follow me up. You've been showing plenty of improvement."

"I got more time to hop in the game now that summer break is here. I mean, the mech classes are fine and all, but a real match always beats a dry lecture."

While Joshua didn't entirely agree, he kept his opinions mum. "I'm going to go pick out a new mech to play with the big boys. Are you interested in helping me choose?"

"Nah. I got to go eat dinner soon. See ya later, pal."

As both of them went their separate ways, Joshua entered the market district of the game. He approached a familiar holographic panel and set the category of the items from 1-star junk to 2-star mechs.

The machines that appeared in front of him roused his interests. The mechs all looked bigger, leaner or more ferocious than their more primitive counterparts. He long dreamed of piloting a more powerful machine than his favorite Seraphim. While the flier was a great machine, he came to grow frustrated at the mech's extensive limitations. Joshua longed to free himself from those chains.

As he browsed through the many light fliers the catalog held, a recommendation attracted his eyes. The market interface pointed out a new 2-star mech to him. One designed by a familiar name.

"Chasing Clouds? So that's what you've been up to. No wonder I haven't seen any 1-star designs from your account."

Joshua regretted not piloting anything new from the upstart designer. Though his products were never the best performers in their categories, they all possessed plenty of character. It also helped they both came from the same planet.

He looked at the latest product the fellow Cloudsman released. When his view was filled with the shiny chrome exterior of the variant called Mist Prowler, Joshua was blown aback.

"It's just like the Seraphim."

He did not refer to technical aspects when he compared their designs. The Seraphim was a light flier that mainly relied on a marksman rifle to harass enemies from afar. He only got in close to melee range if he needed to change his strategy.

This Mist Prowler on the other hand lacked any flight capabilities. Not only was it a weight class heavier, it also packed more power in its limbs, allowing it to run fairly fast for a medium and dodge about with almost unprecedented response time. It largely mimicked the nimbleness of light mechs while possessing the power of a medium mech. This helps with adding strength to its melee attacks, which this urban combat mech primarily relied upon.

No, despite their differences, they emanate a similar presence despite their different playstyles. Joshua was probably the most intimate Seraphim in the game, so he had a nose for these kinds of things. The Mist Prowler was just as aggressive as the Seraphim, only in a different flavor. Whereas the Seraphim sought to seek and destroy the enemy in the most direct fashion possible, the Mist Prowler was content to drag out the hunt and slowly envelop their opponents.

"Hm, that's strange. What's with the stealth option?"

Adding a particle ejector to a hunter or ambush type mech wasn't unusual. But Joshua couldn't figure out why the designer added it to a mech with such a bright and shiny chrome finish.

Then he noted the designer incorporated his practically trademark Cloud Festive Generator right next to the ejector. "Ah, so that's why."

Joshua had a lot of fun playing around with the Cloud Generator. It made him the envy of his friends whenever they teamed up. Though it served no practical purpose and often attracted the enemy to him, he liked to arrive on the battlefield in a bombastic fashion. He loved using it to play games with his opponent's minds.

The mech was different from anything he played before, so he considered whether it was useful to purchase this mech. As his first 2-star mech, he wanted to pilot something familiar so he could leverage his best skills immediately. If he picked the wrong mech to start his career in the Silver League, he might lose too many matches, causing his hard-earned rank to demote. That would be a disaster.

"It's from Chasing Clouds. I don't think he'd release something crappy."

He trusted the designer. He sometimes felt there was a connection between them, an intimacy many pilots had for their favorite designers. Sometimes they became so enthusiastic they resembled fanboys and fangirls. Joshua liked to think he wasn't so blind, so he took the time to scour over the specs and look over the simulations of the variant before making his purchase.

"Ah what the heck, who am I kidding. I'm totally going to buy this mech anyway."

Though the hefty credit price was a step up from the dirt-cheap 1-star mechs, Joshua never paid attention to even eye-popping prices. With a quick credit transfer, Joshua now owned the first handmade Mist Prowler.

As Joshua returned to his private area and entered the mech stables, he could feel the presence of the Mist Prowler. It demanded attention even as it wanted to stay unnoticed. The dichotomy easily caused confusion, but Joshua only felt more intimate towards his new mech. He understood the designer's philosophy, having mastered the Seraphim. No matter how much the designer tried to make a subtle mech, he just couldn't resist showing off. Why else did he include cloud generators and bright colors?

After a brief time of familiarizing himself with the new mech's controls, he threw himself into matchmaking. As he wanted to put his mech to its paces, he chose to enter the gigantic Wartorn Instances mode. Even the smallest 50v50 map possessed plenty of space for him to work his magic without bumping into too many people.

The game finished matching enough players together, causing them all to enter their team's lobby. Joshua took a look around. This was his first match in Silver and he knew that he wasn't playing with people from Cloudy Curtain anymore. Once a player graduated from Bronze, the entire galaxy opened up to them allowing them to play with people tens of thousands of light-years away.

A big and bulky spider mech stood in the center of the room. The small crown hovering over its head demanded everyone's attention.

"Alright guys, I'm NotchedHalberd, and I'll be your captain for this match." A young man's voice spoke out from the team channel. "As we're all playing in the Silver League, I won't bore you with complicated plans. I know only 10% of you will even listen to me. Instead, I just want you to keep one thing in mind: don't all rush forward when the hatch opens up. We artillery mechs need some help fending off the enemy scouts."

Whether much of their team followed this advice, Joshua wasn't hopeful. In fact, he planned to ditch his teammates and find an empty zone to hunt for prey. He could only really stretch his new mech's capabilities by fighting without distractions.

The map eventually loaded and caused the bay doors to open. The map revealed itself to be a hot desert canyon like map. Groans issued out from most of the mech pilots, especially those that relied heavily on energy weapons.

"Fuck! It's Scorched Canyon!"

"Goddammit, it's so hot you can cook an egg on a rock. Who the fuck thought of this stupid scenario? There's nothing here that's worth fighting for!"

"90% of my loadout is based on lasers. I don't know about you guys, but I'm going to sit here and afk for a while."

Hot environments impacted energy-dependent mechs disproportionately. In the real universe, mech outfits tailored their mechs to the local environment in advance. Unfortunately, Iron Spirit's matchmaking kept the map the players had to contest over a secret until the match finally started. This always caused some mech pilots to wallow in misfortune while others danced with glee.

Joshua also plastered a smile on his face. While the Mist Prowler was not set up to fight in deserts, it nevertheless held a slight advantage. His mech's offensive power only consisted of a few melee weapons. The lack of any wrist or shoulder-mounted weapons limited Joshua's offensive options, but honed his mech's strengths in a couple of categories that could be fully exploited in the coming match.

"Don't let the enemy bastards take over all of the top ridges!"

The Scorched Canyon map featured an unusual layout with many winding cliffs and canyons. The final objective of this map was to conquer and hold an ancient alien ruin situated in a deep valley in the middle of a lot of cliffs. Holding the nearby high ground was essential in either sieging the valley or preventing the enemy from taking advantage of them. However, the top plateaus were inaccessible to all but flight mechs. Their presence was essential in taking over the map.

Joshua raced forward and grew more in tune with his mech as he did so. His first movements looked awkward, but he quickly got used to the unusual balance of his agile mech. By the time he traversed halfway to the valley, he could easily dodge pass rocks and other obstacles in his way.

A couple of mechs that traveled in the same direction as him veered off as they entered a narrower route that brought them to the flanks of the valley. Unlike many others, Joshua continued to head straight towards the center.

"Hey noob! It's dangerous if you go into the ruins!"

"He's dead already."

"The fucking loser probably doesn't know how this map works at all."

The risks were exceedingly high if he entered the valley too early, but Joshua could rely on his mech to pull through. The Mist Prowler crossed the wide open space with a sprint that neared the speed of the fastest medium mechs.

Unfortunately, its shiny exterior easily reflected the bright sun in the sky, drawing all sorts of unsavory eyes at him. The scouts that have already reached the nearby ridges grew red, and those with ranged weapons started to fire potshots at him. At this range, the chances of getting hit was minimal, but Joshua didn't enjoy the experience.

Incredibly, he managed to dodge all but a couple of glancing blows. The pressure of incoming fire was a powerful motivator to mastering the Mist Prowler's quirks. His mech practically danced through the hazards with only a few scuffs marks from accurate laser fire. Even the onlookers from his own team popped out their eyes.

Once Joshua reached the midst of the ruins, he was able to use the tall stone structures to break line of sight. Though the enemy could keep raining down fire, damaging the ruins penalized their team's final score. Only by employing scouts and spotters to feed accurate coordinates would teams be able to bombard an enemy occupant without causing excessive collateral damage.

"The first part is over." Joshua sighed as he came down from the high. Though he only piloted his new mech for a short while, he already felt it moved like his own body, but even better. The mech's amazing mix of speed, agility and strength made this mech a great close combat mech. Now that he cast the bait, he only needed to wait until an enemy approached.

Joshua got his first customer. A three-man team of light scouts hastily entered the ruins from the other side. His own team tried to punish their brazen approach and succeeded in scratching their paint at the very least. One mech even suffered a malfunction in his rifle when it got blown apart by a lucky shell.

Ordinarily, a speed-based medium mech preferred not to tangle with light mechs. They moved faster than them while possessing similar amounts of offensive power. The disparity in armor could be negated entirely if the light mechs could use their speed advantage to stay out of reach. This disparity widened the medium mech possessed no ranged weapons.

The Mist Prowler unfortunately lacked even a pistol.

"No matter. These ruins will be my best friend."

The ancient and extensive alien ruins represented the closest urban combat environment in the map. While he could also play around in rock-littered canyons, the spaces there were just a little too small. While the Mist Prowler excelled in complex environments, they needed a certain amount of room to maneuver, which most narrow canyons lacked.

As the three scuffed light mechs crossed over to the other side of the ruins, Joshua prepared for their arrival. He held no hope in hiding his mech from their superior sensors. Instead, he walked his mech around and chose a suitable area to make his stand.

The Mist Prowler was not a mech that enjoyed letting his enemies come to him. By choosing to set up at busy street, he could use the plentiful structures to block the enemy's field of view and force them to come closer. Like a spider sitting in the middle of his web, Joshua waited for the mechs to fall into his range.

When the first of the light mechs stepped into the narrower street, Joshua initiated his plan. He activated his particle ejector, which instantly blasted an entire canister's worth of sensor-blocking junk in the air. The cloud generator also did its work by pumping out a generous amount of psychedelic vapor.

The modules expended their payloads rapidly, causing a couple of blocks of streets to be obscured from optical as well as many other types of sensors. This not only blinded the light mechs, it also prevented onlookers from above or below to interfere with Joshua's hunt.

He grinned as he felt his anticipation grow. Having mapped the surrounding streets before, Joshua slowly piloted his mech forward. The mech's footsteps weren't exactly subtle, but the panicking light mechs allowed him to get in close.

The mech with the damaged laser rifle showed up in front of Joshua first. The Mist Prowler came out far too sudden for the enemy mech to respond in time. Its shiny exterior reflected all kinds of bright and crazy colors due to the rays passing through the colorful vapor. In fact, the effect worked even better than traditional camouflage.

"Death!" Joshua yelled as he urged his nimble mech to thrust forward with its spear.

The force behind his approach was incredible, but the light mech was no slouch either. The enemy pilot bent his mech to the side, causing the spearhead to penetrate the edge of its waist but no deeper.

"That's not all I got!"

Usually, a mech that put most of its forward momentum in a weapon thrust left itself open to retaliation. Joshua merely pushed his Mist Prowler to jump sideways with the enemy and allow the spear to slash the light mech again.

The force behind the second blow wasn't too much, but Joshua was able to control his strike to hit the damaged section again. Few other mechs could achieve such acrobatics.

The spearhead carved through the light mech's armor like a hot knife through butter. The fatal hit allowed the spearhead to wreck a couple of components near its engine. Not enough to take it out entirely, but enough to slow down the light mech's mobility.

"He's here! Come and save me!" The enemy pilot yelled out in the open as he was unable to connect with his teammates with all the interference in the air.

"You'll be dead before they come!"

The light mech tried to turn the tables on the Mist Prowler by diving forwards within the spear's reach. However, Joshua skillfully spun the spear with remarkable dexterity and knocked the light mech's stride off-track with a smack. With another spin he slashed his spear at the enemy's arm, but the lack of power and momentum behind the hasty blow only caused the armor to get cut.

Joshua was a little frustrated with the spear. It worked great if he could build up his speed and stab forward with the incredible weight of his mech behind the blow. Close in like this and it felt more like an unnecessary burden. Therefore he simply dropped it and pulled out the Mist Prowler's heated knives from their holster.

With a pair of hot blades in its hands, the medium mech surged forward in pursuit. The light mech scrambled to parry one knife, only to let the other make a shallow stab in its chest. Before the light mech could pull out, Joshua kept up his barrage and pressed his opponent relentlessly.

One of his knives finally dug past the chest armor and tore a deep gash in the light mech's power reactor.

"Urgh! Fuck! He got me!"

With its mobility impaired and a faltering power reactor, the light mech was practically dead in the water. A couple of follow ups finished off the poor mech.

"First kill." Joshua licked his lips. He started to like this new playstyle. Though the thick mist of particles and colors made it difficult for him to seek out his opponents, they also had a hard time bumping into him.

He realized that using the particle generator on an unsuspecting group negated their numerical advantage. As long as they weren't too close, his mech could take all the time in the world to defeat them one by one.

With only instincts and luck guiding him to his next prey, Joshua led his Mist Prowler deeper into the hazy fog. He had two more mechs to hunt down before the particles sank down onto the earth.

"Heh. What Silver League?" He mocked. "Within my mist, they're dead men walking."

Humanity has conquered half the galaxy and the Age of Mechs reigns supreme!

Ves Larkinson lacked the genetic aptitude to become a famed mech pilot. Fighting against his fate, he studied mech design in order to express his love for mechs as a builder instead of a soldier.

When Ves graduated from college, he returned to a new but empty boutique. Left with a small, newly founded mech workshop that his father painstakingly built with a mountain of debt, Ves somehow needs to make ends meet with the bank breathing down his neck.

In the midst of his despair, he found salvation from another legacy his father had left.

"Welcome to the Mech Designer System. Please design your new mech."

The Bloom family dining hall. Eight people were sitting at the table, waiting for dinner to be served. Only two of them were happily chatting though, the other six were still perplexed about the turn of events. The conversation the other two were holding was to put it nicely "not very interesting and very plain". Joshua had the impression he had landed straight into a bad sitcom and had even ordered Luna to play a laughing track every time he deemed appropriate. 

A woman suddenly marched out of the kitchen and said:  "Dinner's ready! Honey, can you help me serve our guests?"
"Of course, darling!" Henry Bloom replied and helped his wife distribute the dishes. 

Joshua looked at the plate that was brought in front of him. It was a pasta-based dish reminding him of spaghetti. Instinctively, he scanned it to check if there was no strange substance hidden inside the meal but found nothing unusual. He took a bit out of it and found the food pretty tasteless. 

'Even the food feels fake…' he thought. 

About an hour earlier, the previously dead owners had come home, clueless of their previous state. Worse, upon discovering a bunch of intruders inside their house, their immediate reaction was to invite them for dinner. They were also overjoyed that their good friend Lucien had come to visit and didn't care he had been tied up in their basement. And thus, the party was currently 'enjoying' a free supper as a guest of the Bloom family. 

From Joshua's point of view, the only positive element in the last hour was Catherine's new clothes, she simply looked gorgeous in her new outfit. Clarisse had complimented her, naturally oblivious to the fact Catherine was wearing one of her own dresses.

Catherine was pretty clueless about the situation as well. When Joshua had announced the owners were coming home, she initially thought it was one of his dumb jokes. And boy, did she wish it was.   Eric and Joshua briefly told everyone the population of the city suffered from what's called a 'Wiping'. They thus pretended to have had one and were confused about a lot of things. The Blooms had bought that lame excuse, no questions asked. 

While eating, Catherine kept an eye on the rest of the party. They were all quiet, clearly wondering what to do next. Joshua's expression was actually pitiful. He didn't seem to take the situation well. 

'Joshua, you look terrible. Can you adjust your position or they might start asking more questions...' she said, mentally. 
'Are you kidding? I could have entered their house dressed up like Darth Vador and they still wouldn't bat an eye. These people are… I don't know. This whole scene freaks me out.' 
'I'm not at ease either. Still, don't you think it's a good opportunity to gather information? They think we lost our memory and answer everything without thinking too much about it.' 
'Go ahead, I don't speak stupid. I wanna go home.' 
'Fine… I would have expected you to be a bit more mature, though. This doesn't resemble you.' 
'Sorry, you're right… I think I need some time to adjust to the general ambiance of this place.' 
'Suit yourself, but please don't take too long. I need that brilliant mind you're so proud of.' 
'Ha, unfortunately, I think complete morons are a natural enemy of mine, I cannot comprehend their actions.' 

Everyone was more or less done eating by now, so the moment seemed opportune to ask some questions. 

"Mister Bloom, thanks again for the invitation," Catherine began.
"Don't worry about it, my dear. Your presence at our table has been so cheerful. It's us who should thank you for bringing such joy in our daily life."
Catherine took a quick glance at her friends who looked like they were about to die of frustration and couldn't fathom where he got that idea.
 She continued: "As we told you, we seem to suffer from a Wiping. May we bother you with another favor? Could you help us refresh our memory and give us a general information tour of the city?" 
"Of course, of course! It will be our pleasure! Please wait a moment, I'll go get our holomap."  

Henry left the house and headed for his vehicle. A moment later, he came back with a strange circular object. In the meantime, Clarisse and Lucien had cleaned up the dining table. Henry placed his weird ball on it and pressed a button on its side. Immediately, a few runes began to shine on the surface of the ball and a few seconds later, it began emitting light which formed a three-dimensional hologram of the city. 

Catherine was delighted to see that Joshua's expression became a bit more interested and he was examining the map in detail. The others were a bit more surprised at the sudden appearance, Catherine had slowly become more accustomed to technology thanks to Joshua's influence so the hologram didn't surprise her too much, but the others had only acquired Luna recently so they still had a long way to go. 

The projection was extremely detailed. Catherine couldn't help but fathom how ordered the map looked. The core of the city was surrounded by a large circular canal. From that circle, eight straight branches were flowing inwards to the center of the place, dividing the city into eight equal districts. Each of those had a massive pillar-like structure at its center. The eight water flows eventually converged into a big lake located right in the middle of the metropolis. On the lake, there was an island, on which a large magnificent structure, which Catherine suspected to be a palace had been built. Actually, the palace wasn't the only beautiful thing to behold. Once you went past the first circle, the global architecture became extremely extravagant. Most houses seemed to have unique designs with their facade ornate with various motifs, statues, mosaics, and frescoes.  Even though her family was wealthy, her own mansion paled compared to a mere random building found here.  She wondered about their current position and it was easy to find. There was a glowing dot on the map, indicating it. They were currently in the suburbs of the city, outside the outer circle, where the structures were much more modest looking. 

His dumb smile unwavering, Henry began his explanations:
"My friends, I hope you at least remember the basics. The city lord lives on the island in the center of town. Access to that place is strictly forbidden unless you receive an invitation. 

The city is divided into eight districts, each powered by an elemental generator," he said while pointing at one of the giant pillars. "There is one for each type of energy and we name the districts after the element their generator is producing. We have thus have the Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Light, Dark, Lightning and Neutral Districts. Combined they provide all the energy we need for the whole city. Does any of this ring a bell?" 

"It's starting to come back," Lydia lied. 

"Wonderful. Now, considering the whole population is suffering from Wipings, we have established an office that records important events in one's life. If you want, I'll take you there tomorrow. They'll perform an archive search and pull out all the data they can about you. This will help you stabilize your situation. Also, it would be nice for you to remember where you actually live."

Catherine froze. This was a problem. Even assuming everyone in the city is as much of an escapee from the cuckoo's nest as those three, even they would start to get suspicious if there is nothing about them in the archives. 

"We appreciate your help, but you have already done so much for us. If you could point us in the right direction, we'll go there by ourselves tomorrow." 

"Are you sure? Well, it's up to you. You can borrow my holomap if you want." 
Catherine nodded and replied: "That would be appreciated." 
"Anything else you want to know?" 

The obvious one was 'Why are you alive after being murdered?' but Catherine doubted he knew the answer to that. She decided to ask something a bit riskier. 

"I think I remember a rumor that strangers came to our city recently. Have you heard anything about it?"

"Strangers? What silly gossip. There is nothing apart from our great city. It's our whole world!" 

"Hmm, you're probably right, forget about it." 

It was best not to pry too much. Since Henry had graciously offered to borrow his map, they had everything they needed to keep exploring. 

[Map Analyses Complete. The map of Easa is now available on-demand. ] 

The whole party suddenly looked at Joshua. 

'What are you all looking at? Have you forgotten Luna's equipped with a mapping system? Of course, the first thing to do upon finding a map as detailed as this is scanning it! You all need to become more tech-savvy. Anyway, we don't need his holomap anymore. Mine's better,' he told them mentally. 

Catherine quickly checked via Luna what he meant. Luna produced an image similar to the hologram, except showing everyone's position except just the map's current location. Joshua told them that obviously, apart from Catherine it would only work for those in range of the network. Furthermore, the map was equipped with a custom zoom that allowed them to see the nearby area in detail and would auto-complete as they explored more buildings.

After dinner, the Blooms proposed for everyone to stay for the night. They accepted and were given two rooms on the ground floor. One for the ladies and one for the guys. It was already fairly late by then so they quickly retired for the night, leaving the three morons up to their dumb conversations. 

'I think you all had your shares of weird emotions for today. You should all rest while I stay on watch duty,' Joshua messaged them. 
'You… don't want to talk about what happened today?' Catherine replied. 
'I… need to… readjust my opinion on the situation. Clearly, as you all suspect there is something utterly wrong about this place. Just, give me until morning. I'll try to learn more.'
'Fine, just don't do anything reckless.' 

Still confused about the events of the day, the party went to sleep. As for Joshua, he exited the room he was in leaving Boris and Eric alone. He then dismissed his body and observed the three local specimens in their natural habitat. 

They talked about dumb stuff for a few hours, it was soon well past midnight. Joshua was bored out of his mind. 

They broke into an argument and began to fight. Joshua grabbed some popcorn. 

They ended up killing each other. Joshua was somehow delighted. 

Even though those three morons stabbed one another, no blood was flowing out. Furthermore, like last time, the bodies had no odor. 

'This is truly a bad program, I hope something better is airing.'  

Joshua kicked the bodies into a corner, if he was right it would take a few days for them to vanish. No need to bother the others for something so minor. He sat down on the sofa and turned on the television. He was in luck, a live adaptation of Nathalie Tangai was airing.

After dying, our main character found himself summoned by a young woman. She comes from a long line of summoners and had expected to partner up with a powerful being, like the rest of her family. Instead, she summoned a computer programmer, who from now on will be living inside her head. Powerless, he's unable to help her with the upcoming war. Disappointed that neither of them had been blessed by fate with some divine abilities, he decides to build a computer system inside her head himself.

"Unfortunately, your reputation with the city is negative," the lovely girl at the other end of the line politely informed me. "Police department cannot assist you. But if you want, I can write you a reference letter. You could do community service, fix your reputation, and..."
I hung up. To hell with such a judicial system! There was no way in hell that I would sign up for any community service with the headache that I was having. However, despite the ringing in my head, a good idea popped into it.
All I really needed to do was to find someone with whom I had communicated during the last year. I needed someone I could trust to help me learn about my life. All I did so far, I did acting on instinct. It was a pity that I didn't know many reliable people. I had no relatives, and my friends...
"Alex, listen..." I found the number I needed on my phone.
"Go to hell!" Beep.
Either there was something I misunderstood or there was a rift between Alex Carlin — my kindergarten friend — and I. All I could do was keep calling numbers on my phone. Andrew and Mark were friends from school, Peter a friend from university. All of them started cursing as soon as they heard my voice. None of them wanted to hear me out. I had already begun to lose hope when I dialed the last number.
"Mikhail Lvovich." It was my school history teacher and a family friend. I hoped that I hadn't messed things up with him too, and that even if I had, he would at least explain to me what was going on before promising to punch me in the face.
"Hello, Max." We're on speaking terms? After hearing that, my headache calmed down a bit.
"Are you free? I need some advice..."
I wanted to ask him a couple of questions over the phone, but that suddenly seemed scary. What if I said something wrong, and no one wanted to talk to me again? It'd be better to meet him in person. 
"I'm free in the evening. Can you come to Velly Pavilion at six?"
"I can."
I wasn't familiar with the place, but I was sure that I could easily find it on the map. The main thing was that I had made an appointment, and that perhaps some of the secrets surrounding me would be revealed.
Pleased with myself, I finally recovered from being drained of energy and hurried home. This time, I stayed away from dark and strange places. Unfortunately, that strategy didn't really save me from my troubles.
"Max." 
I was ambushed at the entrance by the same freckled boy, whom I promised to charge the house batteries this morning. I was living in a real futuristic future, which I had gotten used to in less than a day. It was weird just how calmly I dealt with everything. 
"Some thugs drained the energy out of me... But let's give it a try." His face tensed at first and then broke into a contented smile. Well, I made a child happy, but I really wanted to figure out how much I had actually suffered. "By the way, what's your name?"
"Simon." He wasn't at all surprised by my forgetfulness. Maybe it was due to the anticipation of what we were about to do.
A couple of minutes later, we were at the roof where, instead of the standard generator that I remembered from my childhood, now stood a steel, ribbed cube, from which stretched the power lines. And into what am I supposed to transfer the energy? Having walked around the steel cube, I found the admin panel on the opposite side. It had a button for extending the energy receiver and a screen that showed the charge level.
"Twenty percent; will that be enough for a while?" It seemed that I was good at talking to children. My questions didn't confuse them at all. The boy's face lit up because he had a chance to share information with me.
"Ten is our monthly rate. The rest is the reserve fund."
"And where's the gasoline made?"
"In the basement. There's a converter there. But Uncle Nick has already drawn wire to it, we just need more energy. We spend less on greenhouses, but we don't have money for modern cars, and nobody sells fuel for the old ones. Only for these kind of generators."
"Don't tell me that you know how it works…"
"Of course I do! We've learned about all of the household equipment in school. Water is poured into the fuel converter, a cylinder of carbon dioxide is connected, and they are transformed into hydrocarbons, which are distilled directly into gasoline. Or you can set something else in the settings."
He had difficulties pronouncing the word "hydrocarbons" but I was still amazed. For an ordinary schoolchild to understand such things... Maybe my old world hadn't become such a bad place after all.
Having pushed the receiver, I habitually lowered my hand into the yellow goo.

It seemed that refusing community service brought me negative points. But I made friends with this little guy. The main thing was to get the energy transferred.
I imagined that I was sharing my accumulated energy, and the indicator value immediately moved upward.

I couldn't accumulate even one whole percent over the twenty that had already been there. What was I thinking? Almost one percent was how much an entire household would spend in three days, and I transferred that amount in less than a minute. Simon was positively beaming. No one seemed to have expected anything more from me, but I knew that I could've done more if it weren't for the two kidnappers.
This whole thing was all very interesting. When I was sitting in the office, the receiver would timely turn me off, not allowing me to drain my energy reserves since that wasn't safe. People warned me about having my reserves drained when they supported my decision to refuse Cromwell's proposal. But Stan and Ollie drained me dry, and this terminal didn't have a fail-safe for some reason.
I felt like I was completely spent. But at the same time, I didn't feel weak like I did when they drained me. And I also had a feeling that my reserve had grown a bit.

Max finds himself in a time loop. Any kind of death annuls everything except his present knowledge, and returns him into the past. This is a good way to test all sorts of things. That is, it would be, if not for one little thing... This loop has real Lords and it’s unlikely that they will be happy to find out about an uninvited guest.

And that isn’t his only problem; all of his memories of the last year have simply disappeared. But the world around him changed in the meantime. Earth has been seized by the Velly clan and is now part of their Star Empire. Max has also discovered his gift of being a psychic.

However, the latter isn’t that big of a deal.
 
Everyone can be a level one “battery;” for everything else, however, it’s necessary to have some talent, money, and connections, which only complicates things further.

A whole new world, great opportunities, and big troubles... Welcome to the Last Time Loop!

          A strange creature is floating in the colorless space. This creature has the appearance of an eyeball, but its similarity with an eyeball stops here. Most of the creature's metallic black surface is covered by glowing circuitry lines that merge into its neon blue iris, and the color of this creature's iris is the same as the color of those circuitry lines. This creature has a light yellow pupil in the center of its iris, which is blinking in a steady interval.
          At first glance, this creature seems like a nightmarish creature that comes out of a sci-fi movie, but this creature is actually the supreme being in [Fictional Realm]. This creature is called [Administrator] and its purpose is to manage the circulation of [resource] that keeps the [Fictional Realm] stable and existing indefinitely.
          [Fictional Realm] is the name of a metaphysical realm made from mankind's collective subconscious thoughts and their beliefs about fiction. It is both illusory and reality, existing as both matter and dream.
          As the manager of the [Fictional Realm], [Administrator] dwells in the centermost of this imaginary universe. Although it never left its dwelling, [Administrator] always knows what happens in [Fictional Realm] because it is omniscient. And with [Administrator]'s authority in this imaginary universe, [Administrator] is also omnipotent. Of course, [Administrator]'s power is limited to this imaginary universe alone.
          With that, [Administrator] is an existence akin to God. No... [Administrator] is the God of this imaginary universe. It is the absolute supreme being above all overpowered fictional characters that were ever being created by mankind's ideas. And despite [Administrator]'s power is absolute, it doesn't mean [Administrator] is without an equal, and truth be told, there exists a threat against its existence…
          The natural counter of [Fictional Realm] and [Administrator] — created by the jaded thought and realistic outlook of mankind who was disillusioned by their harsh reality, an existence called [Oblivion] is the natural counter of [Fictional Realm]. Although they were made from the collective subconscious of mankind, which means they share a similar origin, [Oblivion] has an advantage against [Fictional Realm] and [Administrator] because of its conceptual nature — [Oblivion] exists only to erase the [Fictional Realm], a nature that presented a gross disadvantage for [Administrator] and its imaginary universe that wants to preserve their existence.
          [Administrator] has tried countless attempts to fight off the advance of [Oblivion], and yet all [Administrator]'s attempts met with utter failure. [Administrator] has sent off the strongest characters — heroes, antiheroes, and villains — from each fictional world within [Fictional Realm], but those characters ended up as insignificant nuisances against the [Oblivion], which devoured them in the blink of an eye.
          Like throwing countless eggs on the boulder's hard surface, those eggs cannot harm the boulder. Maybe, the more apt metaphor is, like throwing pebbles into an ocean. And it was nothing but a waste of resources that could be used for better things.
          Although those characters were powerful, they lacked something that could affect the [Oblivion]. And that something is the [Will of Mankind] from [Reality].
          Coming to that conclusion, [Administrator] had an idea: "What if I summon someone from [Reality]?"
          Since [Fictional Realm] and [Oblivion] were made from humanity's collective subconscious, a person from [Reality] is surely the answer for [Administrator]'s dilemma. But summoning someone from [Reality] is something easier said than done! Although [Administrator] is peerless in the scope of [Fictional Realm], [Administrator] is only peerless in this imaginary universe and cannot summon a person from [Reality] through conventional means that often happened in Portal Fantasy stories. As an aside, [Administrator] intimately knows the concept of Hero Summoning from many worlds within this imaginary universe. After all, all fictional ideas that were thought out by mankind existed in this imaginary universe. And 'Portal Fantasy' is a well-known genre of fiction. There are countless worlds wherein that kind of phenomenon happened.
          Be that as it may, [Administrator] can still summon someone from [Reality], but not through the conventional means that normally happened in those 'Portal Fantasy'-based worlds. Because of the nature of [Fictional Realm], [Administrator] cannot summon this person's physical body. Only this person's ego can be summoned to [Fictional Realm].
          Furthermore, summoning the ego of a person from [Reality] is an arduous and costly endeavor. [Administrator] needs to sacrifice an exorbitant amount of the [resources] generated by mankind's subconscious thoughts and beliefs. And lately, this [resource] is very scarce and enough to maintain the continuity of the [Fictional Realm] while slowing down the progress of [Oblivion].
          It is clear that [Fictional Realm] is currently in a precarious situation.
          The reason behind this [resource] deficiency is, as time progressed in [Reality], mankind collectively become stagnant and lazy because of the convenience of the modern era. They have stopped producing substantial ideas and beliefs, lacking inspiration and imagination, which are important to generate enough [resource] to sustain the [Fictional Realm]. And so, [Administrator] experienced [resource] deficiency. Still, with the mechanical precision in management, [Administrator] was able to save up the extra [resource] for an emergency. It is unclear if its savings are enough to fuel the summoning. [Administrator] has never done this, after all. There is a chance it doesn't have enough energy.
          "Regardless, I shall do it!" The desperate [Administrator] decided.
          And so, [Administrator] consumed its saved [resource] and opened a connection to the collective subconscious of mankind. And just by doing that alone has taken almost the entirety of [Administrator]'s savings, but [Administrator] soon discovers its saved [resource] isn't enough to pull someone's ego from [Reality] to the [Fictional Realm].
          "Should the energy for keeping my realm stable be used for this?" [Administrator] asked and started weighing its decision.
          If [Administrator] uses up its stored energy that must be circulated in [Fictional Realm], countless worlds will cease to exist at once. And without those worlds to slow down [Oblivion], that conceptual calamity will quickly and easily get closer to [Administrator]'s location in the centermost of the [Fictional Realm]. However, if its plan succeeds, it can stop the advance of its archenemy indefinitely.
          It is a dangerous gamble. [Oblivion] will claim it if [Administrator] makes a mistake, but it can also prolong [Fictional Realm] existence if it succeeds!
          After finding its resolve, [Administrator] discovers another problem, it can't just take anyone from [Reality]! It can't summon someone charismatic that can sway the masses, which is the kind of person [Administrator] needs the most! A person with the power to move the masses has an important connection with the collective subconscious of mankind. Someone like that has overabundant resources to fight off the [Oblivion], as well as maintaining the expenditure of [Fictional Realm]. However, that kind of person is very important in the [Reality], and [Administrator] cannot take that kind of person away from [Reality]...
          Well, truth be told, [Administrator] can summon someone like that, but it will cease to exist because of converting its existence into the required [resource] to summon such a person. In the end, [Administrator] narrowed down the list of candidates it could summon without endangering its existence...
          Somehow, all the candidates it can summon are Otaku or Weeaboo that aren't significant in [Reality]. And truth be told, [Administrator] doesn't mind that kind of people because they suit its needs. Being mindful of its expendable [resource], [Administrator] selects the candidates with the cheapest [resource] to summon them.
          From here, the candidates are Otaku and Weeaboo who don't mind getting summoned to another world — people who are delusional and dreamer — they know that being summoned to another world is something that only happens in fiction but they still wish to get the opportunity to experience that. They are people without family or significant others to tie them down in [Reality]. And they consider their life is too difficult, and they yearn to have a superpower to make their life more easy and convenient. These kinds of people are surprisingly many. And so, [Administrator] summons one randomly.
          After pulling the ego of this person, [Administrator] discovers that its connection to the subconscious of mankind has been cut off. Perhaps, it is the instinct of mankind's subconscious to protect themselves. That aside, this happening presents a bigger problem for [Administrator]. Since [Fictional Realm] was cut off from the [Reality], it wouldn't receive the [resource] to maintain the existence of [Fictional Realm]. 
          [Administrator]'s regret is bottomless, but it can do nothing about it. At least, [Administrator] has someone from [Reality] that can become a constant resource generator for [Fictional Realm]. Well, [Administrator] only grasped a lifeline here. Nevertheless, [Administrator] achieved what it sought out even though [Fictional Realm] and [Administrator] is in a pinch now.
