Extract from the book :

"Smile!" says a deep male voice. 

"Come on Emma! Smile!" says a light girly voice. 

"Open your eyes, Emma," Emma tells herself. She opens her eyes, with disbelief, "d... dad?" asks Emma

"Yes honey?" asks the deep male voice. 

"Oh... nothing" answers back Emma. 

"Okay now... smile!!", "Very nice girls! This one is a keeper for sure, can't wait until mom sees you two!" says Emma's dad. 

"Yeah! Come on Emma lets... Emma?... are you okay?..." asks the little girl. 

"This is not happening... I... I" Emma begins to speak but stumbles upon words. 

"What? Is everything alright?.... You look pale... do you want some water?"

"No... I... I need to sit... I..." Emma begins to speak, but she just cannot speak the words out. 

"This has to be a dream... I... I don't know what else it could be, but it feels so real...I... I remember this...." Emma tells herself.

Emma and the little girl goes to the couch and sit down, "w... who are you?... may I ask?" asks Emma. 

"I... am Samantha... your best friend...I will assume that you were only joking there about asking me about my name... are you?" says Samantha, worried. 


"Yeah... I... I was... haha, got you..." Emma says, forcing a smile, "how can this be happening!? My father.... he is here!? I feel like I went back in time... but that is impossible... right?" 

Emma talks in her head to herself, "what date is it today Sam?" Emma asks Samantha. 

"It's.... the.... 24th of June, why?" Sam asks Emma. 

"Okay what year?" Emma asks Samantha again. 

"You kidding?..." Samantha tells Emma.

"Just answer my question please..." Emma pleads Samantha. 

"It's 2014... and you have lost your mind..." Samantha tells Emma, slightly feeling worried. 

Emma opens her eyes wide, "this must be a dream, it has to be a dream, how the fuck could I then explain me going back 4 years in time...

The year is 2020 december 31st 11:30 pm new years eve young twenty three year old Emma evergreen was on a fun romantic date with her highschool sweetheart Julian solano, little did she know what was going to happen that night. Emma and Julian live in Miami Florida and decided to go on a date at the one of the peers. Julian led Emma to a huge willow tree and spread the leaves to reveal a candlelit picnic. Emma fell to her knees in joy. Julian didn't know how to react but before he could  Emma bursted into tears then she told Julian that it was perfect and Julian was relieved. Emma sat down to enjoy the zesty yet smoky filet of salmon garnished with rosemary with a side of asparagus. As they enjoyed their meal Julian looked up to see the smile that he fell in love with all those years ago. They made eye contact. Julian cleared his voice and sat up straight, he looked flustered, he finally spoke up "Emma since the first time i set eyes on you i knew i loved you and i knew that i wanted to marry you one day", Emma started to cry tears of happiness. "Emma you are the one and only woman for me". Emma cried even more. "Emma vali evergreen will you do me the honor of being my wife". "Yes a thousand times yes" Emma cried out. Her and Julian were so happy and in love nothing could ruin this moment except maybe…
Emma lay awake in the bed she shares with her now fiance 
Julian. She was wondering about what she was going to do about the conflict between her and Julian's family because they don't like her but she's got some news that will hopefully make them like her. Well this news is even a surprise for Julian. Emma finally fell asleep and dreamed of wedding dresses and cake. When she eventually awoke she was greeted with a cheeky smile and a sweet kiss on the forehead. "Good morning my beautiful bride to be" Julian whispered in Emma's ear softly. Emma smelled the sweet smell of her future husband's famous homemade pancakes. She swiftly sat up and looked to her left to see a plate full of golden brown pancakes, next to them sat a can of whipped cream and a bottle of white wine. All Emma could think about was how good her fiance knew her. "Good morning to you too" Emma finally replied. She grabbed the plate of pancakes and sat it on her lap,took a long swig of wine put some whipped cream on her pancakes then devoured them. She placed the plate on the bed side table, then went to take a shower. While Emma was taking a shower Julian was writing his novel in the dining room, a passion not many people knew about. 
    When Emma got out of the shower she heard typing which surprised her, she had never heard it before. She quickly wrapped a towel around her and quietly walked out into the dining room. She slowly looked around the corner, she saw her fiancé quickly typing on his computer. He didn't see her but he suddenly stopped typing and turned bright red,slammed the computer shut and ran out the door. Emma was Utterly flabbergasted she looked down at the computer still in a towel. She sat down and began to read. Right as she started reading her fiancé burst in the door which startled Emma. She quickly sat up and her towel dropped to the floor. Her Beautiful naked figure now on full display. His jaw dropped in aw of her beauty. He scooped her up in his arms and took his beautiful fiancé to there bedroom and placed her on the bed and asked her not to look at his computer Emma agreed but in return she would be allowed to at least read his novel. They both got dressed and went to work. Work went pretty smooth for both of them. Emma works as a teacher and,Julian runs his hotel with his ex wife Faith. Now let's talk about Faith she is a crazy,manipulative and psychotic woman but she can be sweet and compassionate. Faith is a confusing person she can be really nice but can be really manipulative and rude that's why she has been left by three different men and two different women. Emma works as a college professor. She's an art teacher and her classroom is more like a art cave but it is a classroom. Julian as you know co owns a hotel called the Marbella. He is also really well off. He's one of the most successful business men in Miami. When Emma got back from work she picked up Julian's computer and continued reading his novel. Emma was surprisingly enjoying her fiancés novel. She might be bias but she thought it was the best book she had ever read. As she read she got to a certain point were things in the book just stopped making sense she started getting confused she put the computer down and went to go get some food and some water. Julian was still at work and Emma was enjoying some alone time. Emma decided to sew something she decided to sew a shirt for her nephew. When Julian finally got home he first kissed his fiancé on her forehead and then began dinner while Julian made dinner Emma began making desert. After dinner Julian continued writing his novel and Emma began to finish the shirt she was making. Emma stoped what she was doing to tell Julian a very important detail before things between them got scary... she walked into the dining room were Julian was Writing. Emma sat down across from Julian. She ask him If there were any deal breakers Julian replied with no. Emma told him that there was an important thing he needed to know. Julian I'm pregnant... Julian?

Emma Huang thought she might be the unluckiest person alive. Her whole life had been cycle of misfortune, struggle, misery, and then a bit of luck to give her hope before plunging back into misfortune, starting the whole cycle over again.
Although spiral might be a better word, Emma reflected where she sat with her head in her hands. Because even though a little luck would always remedy the situation somewhat, she always seemed to find herself worse off after. Yes, her life could definitely be best described as a slow but inevitable downward spiral.
Rubbing her temples she let out a long groan. The sound echoed around the thankfully sparkly clean bathroom where she was currently hiding. Yes, she, Emma Huang, was hiding in the employee bathroom of a swanky Hong Kong night club.
Although she liked to think of herself as a fierce and fearless woman, who would always stand her ground, she felt that this time, she had a a good reason to cower in the bathroom like a frightened rabbit. Because how often was it that an imposing and very possibly dangerous man, who was very likely used to getting his own way, the owner of the night club, that also happened to be her boss made it clear that he would like nothing more than to have you as his woman? Oh, and there was the little detail of him possibly being involved in organised crime.
Emma felt that even a fierce and fearless woman was allowed to hide in the bathroom for a few minutes when faced with such a situation.
'So this is it', she thought quietly to herself. 'This is the next misfortune that is thrown at me.'
Thinking back it shouldn't really be that surprising, because hadn't she just thought that very morning that things were turning around for her? She had been amazed to discover that she had a decent amount of money in her bank account, a week's worth of food in her fridge, and had just passed her latest exam in nursing school with flying colours.
Looking back now, Emma realised that she should have known better that to allow herself to hope. She should have taken it as a warning that things were about to get worse, because they always got worse. That was her life, just when she dared to hope that she had finally stabilised her life, another disaster came crashing into it. It was the endless cycle that was her life.
Emma Huang grew up in a wealthy family. Although she wasn't particularly loved or wanted, she went to the best schools, had her meals cooked by first class chefs, lived in a mansion, and had enough pocket money to buy whatever she wanted. Emma knew that she had been more fortunate than most, but at the same time couldn't say that she had a particularly happy childhood.
The only skills she had learned from her mother were how to mix cocktails, how to dress like a lady, and how to extort a lot of money from you cheating husband when you divorced him.
Even before her mother had scarpered off abroad with her big pile of divorce settlement money, leaving a teenage Emma behind, her mother had always been distant with her. Still, borderline indifference was preferable to how her father treated her. Emma's father never looked at her except to criticise and had an impressively large vocabulary of nasty comments about everything that was wrong with her.
Knowing that there were so many people in the world who were worse off that herself, Emma kept herself from wallowing too much in self-pity. Yeah, sure, her mother abandoned her, her father found fault in everything she did, her half-sister once attempted to run her over with a car, and her younger half-brother tried to pimp her out in order to make friends with the sons of more powerful and influential families, but you couldn't have everything.
Sometimes Emma thought her life would make an excellent novel: a young girl, abandoned by her mother, wronged by her family, disowned, and betrayed, fallen low, only rise like a phoenix from the ashes of her life to exact revenge on all those who had wronged her. Really, it only needed her ex-fiancé cheating on her with her sister to make the plot perfect. If Emma ever had time, she would definitely write that novel.
Sadly, in real life, Emma never seemed to rise from the ashes. She only fell further and further into the firepit. And who wanted to read "The endlessly tragic life of Emma Huang"?
Emma reflected, as she sat there on the toilet contemplating her life, that if her life really was like a novel, this moment would have been the great turning point. The moment where the handsome male lead appeared to swoop her of her feet.
Sadly, her boss, did not fit that description at all. Sure, he looked every part the dark and dashing stranger. He was tall. He was handsome. And he was very likely filthy rich.
But while it was all fine and good to romanticise organised crime bosses in novels, Emma did not think that being the woman of such a man in real life would be much fun. More especially, because there was something about Mr. Long that made her skin crawl.
Until she met him, she did not think it was possible to dislike a person on instinct. Moreover, she couldn't think of any particular reason why she should dislike him so very much. It was simply dislike at first sight. His gaze made her shiver and his touch made her skin crawl.

Emma Huang's life is a series of misfortunes, and seemingly an endless downward spiral. Once a rich heiress, she now makes cocktails in a night club. When her boss offers to make her a kept woman, she really seems to have hit rock bottom. 

After a strange encounter, she starts to have frequent and weird dreams. They are so vivid that she could almost believe them to be her own experiences. She knows that this can't be, but maybe they are memories from a previous life?

I am writing as a hobby, therefore I'm sorry if I can't always update very regularly, but the more views and feedback I get the more it motivates me!

There might be some twists and turns in the story, but I'm writing with a specific end point in mind, and most of the plot is already planned out. But I can definitely promise that there are no endless misunderstandings in this novel, also no "sex" which is actually abuse or rape.

Ickapoo wants love. But flings bring ruin. He should find love.
"It would be difficult toady for any of us to say what he was like. There was nothing striking about him: he played during recess, worked in study-hall, paid attention in class, slept soundly in the dormitory, ate heartily in the refectory." (10)
In other words, Charles was a conformist who fitted societal norms comfortably and would be indistinguishable from the common man in society, he was boring conformist and unremarkable.

"The next day, however, he seemed a very different man. It was he who gave the impression of having lost his virginity overnight: the bride made not the slightest sign that could be taken to betray anything at all." (34)
Charles had derived sensual satisfaction from consummating their marriage but Emma had not been sexually satisfied by their consummation.
"Everything immediately surrounding her - boring countryside, inane petty bourgeois, the mediocrity of daily life - seemed to her the exception rather than the rule. She had been caught in it all by some accident: out beyond, there stretched as far as eye could see the immense territory of rapture and passions. In her longing she made no difference between the pleasures of luxury and the joys of the heart, between elegant living and sensitive feeling." (66)
After attending the ball at La Vaubyessard, Emma is convinced that her bourgeoisie surroundings brim with mundanity and mediocrity. She feels that she is not living authentically.

"What exasperated her was Charles' total unawareness of her ordeal. His conviction that he was making her happy she took as a stupid insult: such self-righteousness could only mean that he didn't appreciate her. For whose sake, after all, was she being virtuous? Wasn't he the obstacle to every kind of happiness, the cause of all her wretchedness, the sharp-pointed prong of this many stranded belt that bound her on all sides?" (123)
Emma feels Charles is the source of her unhappiness and misery which leads to her choice of adultery.

How bored she must be! Dying to live in town, to dance the polka every night! Poor little thing! She's gasping for love like a carp on a kitchen table gasping for water. A compliment or two and she'd adore me, I'm positive. She'd be sweet! But - how would I get rid of her later?" (147)
Rodolphe meets Emma and is impressed by the fact that she must be thoroughly bored and contemptuous of her mundane existence with Charles and he contemplates seducing then dumping her.
"She remembered the heroines of novels she had read, and the lyrical legion of those adulterous women began to sing in her memory with sisterly voices that enchanted her. Now she saw herself as one of those amoureuses whom she had so envied: she was becoming, in reality, one of that gallery of fictional figures; the long dream of her youth was coming true. She was full of a delicious sense of vengeance. How she had suffered! But now her hour of triumph had come; and love, so long repressed was gushing forth in joyful effervescence. She savored it without remorse, without anxiety, without distress." (183).
Emma feels like a fiction come into reality, her boring existence with Charles now comes alive with her new sexually stimulating affair with Rodolphe.
 
"Since he had heard those same words uttered by loose women or prostitutes, he had little belief in their sincerity when he heard them now: the more flowery a person's speech, he thought, the more suspect the feelings, or lack of feelings, it concealed. Whereas the truth is that fullness of soul can sometimes overflow in utter vapidity of language, for none of us can ever express the exact human measure of his needs or his thoughts or his sorrows; and human speech is like a cracked kettle on which we tap crude rhythms for bears to dance to, while we long to make music that will melt the stars." (216)
Having conquered Emma sexually, Rodolphe is indifferent to her declarations of love. He likens Emma to a loose woman and prostitute and their tryst has not captured him romantically.

"With her ever-changing moods, by turns brooding and gay, chattering and silent, fiery and casual, she aroused in him a thousand desires, awakening instincts or memories. She was the amoureuse of all the novels, the heroine of all the plays, the vague "she" of all the poetry books." (302)
Leon imagines Emma as a fiction come alive much like Emma had imagined herself in the early days of her romance with Rodolphe.

"He never disputed any of her ideas; he fell in with all her tastes: he was becoming her mistress, far more than she was his. Her sweet words and her kisses swept away his soul. Her depravity was so deep and so dissembled as to be almost intangible: where could she have learned it? (316)
Leon is increasingly enraptured with Emma and the elegance she had learned from books and magazines, her self-effected elegance and romanticism have drawn him in.
"Everyone must have adored her, he thought. Every man who saw her must certainly have coveted her. This made her the lovelier in his mind; and he conceived a furious desire for her that never stopped; it fed the flames of his despair, and it grew stronger and stronger because now it could never be satisfied." (388)
Upon Emma’s death Charles discovers the letter from Rodolphe which ended the affair.He dismissed the letter’s significance but feels a depth of passion for the ruined Emma who had come alive from books and magazines and brought elegance to life like nobody had before.
Emma indulges her fancy for luxury goods with purchases made on credit from the crafty merchant Lheureux, who arranges for her to obtain power of attorney over Charles' estate. Emma's debt steadily mounts.When Lheureux calls in Bovary's debt, Emma pleads for money from several people, including Léon and Rodolphe, only to be turned down. In despair, she swallows arsenic and dies an agonizing death. Charles, devastated, grieves Emma, preserves Emma's room, and adopts her attitudes and tastes to keep her memory alive. In his last months, he stops working and lives by selling off his possessions.

In Graham Greene’s the End of the Affair, God is shown to be an omniscient presence whom the characters fail to escape even though they try to pretend that he does not exist. Bendrix is deeply jealous of Henry, whose wife Sarah had an affair with him in the past. However he could never persuade Sarah to leave Henry for him even though it was a loveless marriage. He hires a private detective Savage to find out what had happened in the two year interval since she had stopped seeing him, and discovers she has since had an affair with another man.
	Sarah for one is a woman who desperately does not want to believe in God but discovers that she cannot escape his presence. It turns out that she had prayed to God to keep Bendrix alive when a bomb blast took place in the building they were having an affair in. She had prayed that if God kept Bendrix alive, she would stop seeing him. Indeed Bendrix emerges alive in an answered prayer to her and she has to stop seeing him and start believing in God even though it was not what she wanted. 
Sarah had told God to make her believe in him even though she did not by keeping Bendrix alive. It turns out that the God she was trying so desperately to escape did exist by answering her prayer and keeping Bendrix alive though she did not wish to believe in him as she was committing adultery which she thought was only between her and God. It turns out that the omniscient God did apprehend her being deeply mired in sin and did care about her purity, sending the signal that she should end the affair by keeping Bendrix alive in response to her prayer. 
Years later when Sarah dies, Sarah’s mother discloses to Bendrix that Sarah had been baptized a Catholic even though she did not know it herself. This explains her bursts of religiosity even though she for most of her life had thought herself agnostic.
	Bendrix himself while being deeply in love with Sarah could never quite separate love from hate. He hated Henry for being able to keep Sarah even though he had long ceased to have any physical desire for her and had lulled the marriage into a pallid and loveless one. He hated Henry for being able to hold on to Sarah only by virtue of a marriage vow which he had held on to without bringing any sparks to the marriage which was what prompted Sarah to seek love outside the marriage in the first place.
 Bendrix describes himself as a deeply jealous man. Throughout his affair with Sarah he cannot cease feeling jealous towards Henry for possessing Sarah even though he had long ceased feeling passion for her or igniting passion in the marriage. It was this jealousy that led Bendix to hire a private detective to find out if Sarah had gotten intimate with another man since she had abruptly stopped seeing her two years ago
. It turned out she indeed was seeing a colleague of Henry’s whose wife had run away with a civil servant and they had not taken very long to fall in love. Bendrix is jealous that Sarah seems such a loose and fickle woman, though it is revealed in her diaries that it is Bendrix she really loved.
As a result the characters in Graham Greene’s novel apprehend the existence of God, even though they do not love God and in fact, hate God for not allowing them to love each other. For Sarah and Bendrix, it is the simple marriage vow to Henry which keeps them from getting together, but Sarah apprehends that what she is doing is sinful when she prays to God upon the bomb blast that her vow matters only to him but she will cease her adultery if God keeps Bendrix alive.
 Indeed God reveals his presence and existence by keeping Bendrix alive and from then on, Sarah begins to fear God and apprehend that he exists though she does not necessarily love him and indeed hates him for keeping her apart from the man she truly loves.
Eventually Sarah sees Henry’s colleague Richard in another affair and another adulterous relationship but when Richard asks him to leave Henry for her she tells him she loves another, who is of course, Bendrix. The irony is thus heavy, while Bendrix suffocates all the love out of Sarah by being jealous and possessive all the time because of the guilt that drives him in an adulterous relationship it is he that Sarah truly loves but is kept apart from by law and by God’s justice. 
The characters of the novel eventually begin to apprehend the existence of God and understand the nature of his laws even though they do not necessarily love God because it is his law that keeps them apart from their true passions. Sarah and Bendrix are kept apart by the hollow marriage vow that keeps Sarah and Henry together even though the passion has long since evaporated from their marriage and their marriage has lost its vitality.
Often the characters question if free will is an illusion. They think that God has predestined them to be trapped in sin by arranging that they fall in love in an adulterous relationship which they prefer over the legitimate marriage. At one point Bendrix questions if God had arranged him to be an agent of the devil so that saints such as Henry could emerge pure and untarnished by the lust of adultery. 
Indeed he argues that if God can choose and appoint his saints, the devil can likewise choose and appoint his saint and Bendrix feels that he has been appointed by the devil to destroy Henry’s marriage and to be kept from his true love Sarah. At one point Bendrix describes himself as the demon speaking to Henry when he denies that Henry is a fool when he knows he has been taking him for one by cuckolding him.
At the end of the novel when Sarah dies Bendrix does learn to believe in God and fear him though he does not necessarily love God and indeed hates him for punishing Sarah for her adultery through death and keeping them apart though they were truly in love when Sarah was alove.
 The novel ends with Bendrix uttering that he has no doubt that God exists and is a God who sends justice and retribution for sins while he does not love this God and indeed hates this God for keeping him from what he most desires.
Indeed God’s justice is inescapable for each of the characters of the novel even though they try to ignore God at various points and pretend that he does not exist. God’s justice is indeed, inexorable and something they cannot flee from. 
Throughout the novel the characters are tormented by guilt for engaging in sin and adultery. Bendrix destroys the relationship by manifesting this guilt in jealousy of Henry and seeking to possess Sarah all the time and being jealous of her past, present and future. Sarah on the other hand, is led to believe the bomb blast is retribution for their adultery and prays to God to relieve her of her punishment by promising to turn away from sin if God keeps Bendrix alive.
Indeed uncannily God responds by keeping Bendrix alive and Sarah is forced to turn away from her adulterous ways even though her marriage has become pallid and loveless and it is Bendrix rather than Henry whom she truly loves. 
At one point Sarah tells God she hates Henry for being the factor that keeps her away from running away with Bendrix even though he has long since stopped physically desiring her or kindling any sparks in their marriage.
 It is at moment like those that she feels she does not seem to have free will and is rather a puppet of God because she feels she is bound by his invisible laws to steer her away from what is most precious to her,
	There is a thin line between love and hate in the novel. Bendrix tells us many times that his love for Sarah came closer to hatred for abandoning him after the bomb blast and for not gathering the courage to leave Henry even though their passion in the marriage has long faded. 
Sarah hates Henry for being the factor that keeps her away from finding true love though she fears the God whose law she must honour by staying true to Henry because God had sought her out and shown her that he existed through inflicting the bomb blast where Bendrix and she were having the affair and securing her promise not to continue in adultery. 
God’s justice is thus inexorable and inescapable for all the characters in the novel. Bendrix is eventually punished for his adultery by having the woman who he loves most, Sarah taken away from his once through abandonment after the bomb blast and second through her death.
 While Sarah had come to apprehend and appreciate the existence of God, she too did not escape his relentless justice for her two affairs outside marriage as she eventually meets with an early death.
 Hence the God of Greene’s world is a God that all the characters come to fear though they do not necessarily love Him because He keeps them from their most intimate desires because he construes them as sin and punishes and distributes justice accordingly. Indeed, all the characters of the novel express their hatred for God and his wrath at one point or another because they are kept from their true passions due to his law and his swift justice in punishing those who fail to keep God’s standards and God’s law.
The attitude of Greene towards the biblical God is thus ambivalent. Greene depicts the biblical God as a God of justice who sees to the swift retribution of sins but does not seem to depict the biblical God as a merciful God of compassion because the reasons they are kept from their passions seems to be a hollow law which preserves a marriage which has long since gone stale with Henry. There is little doubt that Greene believes that the biblical God exists, as all his characters come to apprehend through the dealing of justice in their lives.
On the other hand, it would be false to say the Biblical God that Greene depicts is free of compassion and mercy. He spares Bendrix’s life on the condition that Sarah turns away from sin, indeed, God secures this promise from her by keeping Bendrix alive and thus steering her away from adultery.
 The conflict at the heart of the novel is thus the temporary satiation of desires at the expense of the eternal preservation of one’s sanctity with God which the characters willingly forgo. God is merciful to those who preserve his law, as He demonstrated through his preservation of Bendrix. But for those who flout his laws repeatedly, as Sarah does when she goes on to have another affair outside marriage, the punishment is swift. Sarah dies early, much to the grief of all her lovers.
On the other hand, Greene’s ambivalence towards the biblical God cannot be denied as Greene seems to be implying that this biblical God would rather preserve a marriage which has become a lie, hollow and empty rather than allow the characters to pursue their true passions. 
The unfolding of Sarah’s life is a tragedy for all who know her because she cannot escape her sham marriage and repeatedly falls into sin by trying to escape her marriage which has become a falsehood and false bond for her which she is swiftly punished for. According to Greene thus the biblical God does not seem to allow his characters to authenticate their desires, or live their lives true to themselves. 
Indeed God demands that marriage vows be kept, without considering the state or authenticity of the marriage. Greene thus seems to imply that while adultery is a sin and the punishment for adultery is inexorable and swift, God does not seem to heed the authenticity of the marriage being violated or the true passion that is destroyed by God seeing to the punishment of his laws through swiftly punishing adultery by having Sarah meet an early death and destroying the affair between Sarah and Bendrix.
Greene thus seems to depict God as an austere and jealous God who distributes his justice and retribution swiftly on those who violate his commandments but seems to imply that God does not heed the conditions which lead to the violation of his commandments. As a result, all the characters of Greene’s novel fear God but do not love him and indeed hate God for keeping them from their truest desires.
The End of the Affair, thus while being a religious novel seems to be ambivalent overall about religion. While it presents God as an undeniable presence, it does not seem to present that God as a character that the characters of the novel love because they cannot live with the consequences of their actions. What in ultimate however is the certitude of God’s existence that all the characters of the novel come to know through the consequences of their actions. The biblical God is someone all the characters come to know, though not necessarily love as He keeps them from their innermost desires.

Pria muda dengan postur tubuh yang tegap, atletis, tampan, pintar, rambut yang disisir rapi ke atas memperlihatkan dahi dengan bentuk yang sempurna, alis tebal, hidung mancung, garis rahang yang tegas, kulit putih dengan kharisma yang benar-benar menawan. Aiden Rawles, meraih puncak kesuksesannya di umur yang ke tiga puluh tahun.

Malam sudah menunjukkan pukul sembilan. Aiden masuk ke dalam ruangan ekslusif dan mewah dengan tulisan CEO di depan pintunya. Wajahnya nampak sedikit lelah sepulang dari pesta perayaan ulang tahunnya yang ke tiga puluh.

Aiden tidak terlalu suka dengan pesta. Sejak ia dilantik menjadi Direktur Utama Diamond Group menggantikan ayahnya 'Alex Rawles' ia sangat jarang menghabiskan waktunya seperti pemuda yang lain. Aiden akan lebih memilih kerja, kerja, dan bekerja. Tidak heran ia membawa Diamond Group menduduki penghargaan The Fastest Grow Company.

Saat Emma masih dalam masa pendidikan, Aiden bekerja dengan sekretaris yang lain sampai Emma benar-benar siap bekerja untuk Aiden.

Dan di sinilah mereka, setelah bekerja selama tujuh tahun bersama, dengan kolaborasi dan profesionalitas yang sempurna. Sesuatu yang di luar dugaan Emma pun terjadi.

Emma mengikuti Aiden di belakangnya, membawakan jas yang Aiden lepaskan saat berjalan di koridor. Keadaan kantor sudah sangat sepi. Tidak ada seorang pun di sana selain petugas keamanan yang bertugas di mejanya.

Tuk tuk tuk.

Langkah kaki Aiden terdengar menggema. Emma mengikuti kecepatannya dengan sangat baik. Tidak terlalu cepat, dan juga tidak ketinggalan. Begitu masuk di ruangan CEO. Aiden segera duduk di kursi putarnya. Merenggangkan otot leher dengan ekspresi kelelahan.

Emma maju perlahan lalu sedikit menunduk di hadapannya. "Apa anda kembali ke kantor untuk bekerja pak Aiden? Maaf jika Saya lancang, tapi, sebaiknya Anda kembali untuk beristirahat. Jadwal Anda hari ini sangat padat. Saya akan menelepon pak Willy untuk—"

Aiden mengangkat tangannya, pertanda meminta Emma berhenti berbicara. Wajahnya datar, sambil mengembuskan napas.

"Huuuuffffttt. Tidak usah Emma," ucapnya, "Aku akan menyetir sendiri."

"Baik, Pak," jawab Emma lugas.

"Hasil rekapan data dan time Line project baru dengan Star Light group apa sudah selesai?

"Sudah, Pak. Saya juga sudah email ke Bapak, tinggal menunggu keputusan Bapak untuk lanjut atau tidak."

"Hmm .... Bagaimana dengan meeting bersama CEO Clever Group untuk membahas kerja sama kita?"

"Sudah diaturkan besok jam sepuluh pagi, Pak."

"Permasalahan produksi di cabang tiga?"

"Saya sudah melakukan investigasi, sementara menunggu berita terakhirnya dan kita siap membahasnya. Waktu dan tempat akan saya infokan lagi kepada Bapak setelah mendapat kabar terbaru."

"Apa masih ada masalah yang lain?"

"Tidak ada, Pak."

"Makan siang dengan walikota?"

"Sesuai Schedule, Pak, akan dilaksanakan lusa. Dan pengajuannya sudah disetujui."

"Oh iya, tolong aturkan juga pertemuan dan jamuan untuk Klien kita dari New York, barusan Saya dapat kabar dari mereka."

"Noted, Pak. Akan saya masukan ke dalam jadwal bapak."

"Jangan lupa arrange meeting dengan tim RnD, kenapa sampai sekarang Saya belum menerima ide project untuk produk baru?"

"Noted, Pak! Akan saya aturkan dan persiapkan tim RnD kita."

"Jangan lebih dari satu minggu, kita harus bergerak lebih cepat!"

"Baik, Pak!"

"...." Aiden terdiam sejenak sambil memegang dagunya.

"Apa ada lagi yang bisa saya bantu, Pak?"

"Tidur denganku!"

"Heuh?"

"You Sleep with me ... tonight!"

"WHAT? Ehm ..., maaf, Pak." Emma kembali menunduk dan memelankan volume suaranya, ia secara refleks terkejut mendengar perintah terakhir dari bossnya. "Apa maksudnya Bapak, saya ... dengan bapak? Ehm ...." Emma memiringkan kepala bingung.

Aiden mengangkat wajahnya dan menatap lurus ke wajah Emma.

"Kenapa? Kau tidak menyukaiku?"

"Bu-bukan begitu, Pak, tapi ..., Saya ...."

"Bukan begitu? Berarti kau menyukaiku."

"Heuh?"

"Jawabannya hanya iya dan tidak!" ucap Aiden tegas.

"Oohhh. Biar saya mencarikan wanita untuk Bapak."

"Tidak! Aku hanya menginginkanmu."

"Saya?" Emma menunjuk hidungnya. "Hahaha. Selera humor bapak sangat baik akhir-akhir ini." Emma tertawa awkawk, sekaligus berharap Aiden hanya bercanda.

"Aku tidak bercanda!"

DEG!

Aiden menjawab tegas dengan tatapan yang serius. Ia sama sekali tidak terlihat sedang bercanda.

"Tidur denganku malam ini, atau Kamu Saya pecat. Dan kamu tahu sendiri kontrakmu berbeda dengan karyawan yang lain. Kamu harus mengganti seluruh biaya pendidikan, pelatihan, dan semua yang tertulis di dalam kontrak," ucap Aiden seakan bernegosiasi dengan klien bisnis.

Akan selalu 'tidak ada pilihan yang lain' jika harus bernegosiasi dengan Aiden. Dia benar-benar seorang negosiator yang hebat.

Emma semakin gugup. Jantungnya berdebar begitu keras. Ia tidak pernah menyangka, pria yang dilayaninya selama ini sebagai atasan, untuk pertama kalinya meminta hal yang di luar tugas dan tanggung jawab Emma. Emma memang sering mengurusi segala keperluan pribadi Aiden Rawles, baju yang akan ia pakai, menemani saat berolah raga, sarapan, makan siang dan malam, bahkan Emma juga selalu menyiapkan segala keperluannya, termasuk membantu memasangkan dasi dan jas di pagi hari bila sedang diperlukan. Atau pun membantu Aiden untuk beristirahat saat harus pulang mabuk, mengantarkan ke dokter pribadi, dan segala keperluan pribadi yang lainnya.

Aiden masih menatap Emma yang kini tengah menggigit bibir bawahnya, dan menarik jari telunjuknya. Wajah Emma terlihat gugup dan takut. Aiden mengangkat alisnya menunggu jawaban Emma.

"So, yes or no? Kamu tahu aku tidak suka menunggu lama."

Emma tidak menjawab.

"Emma?"

" ...." Emma kembali hanya terdiam.

Aiden melepas tatapan seriusnya lalu mengangguk. "Hmmm ... tidak menjawab, ya? Sepertinya Aku paham. Kamu sudah memiliki kekasih. Maaf jika seperti itu." Aiden tersenyum kecewa di ujung kalimatnya.

"Tidak! Ehm ... maksud Saya belum. Saya belum memiliki kekasih."

Aidem kembali duduk bersandar, ekspresi wajahnya berubah merekah. Ia semakin tertarik. Merasa sedikit menang dengan negosiasi ini.

"So, you free?"

"I-iya ... tapi, bukan berarti—"

"Siapkan President Suite di Diamond Hotel, jangan lupa Anggur dan Spa di kamar mandi! Pastikan memakai aroma Lavender! Gunakan Credit Card pribadiku yang ada padamu. Booking Boutique malam ini, pakai dress dan berdandanlah yang cantik. Lakukan sekarang, aku tunggu kamu di sana paling lambat jam sebelas malam. Dan terima kasih atas pekerjaanmu hari ini."

Emma membelalakkan matanya terkejut. Aiden segera berdiri dengan senyum miring penuh kemenangan. Emma terdiam dan mematung di posisinya. Aiden mendekat ke arahnya secara perlahan. Emma semakin gemetar, ia bahkan sedikit meremas jas Aiden yang disampilkan di lengannya. Aiden mendekat dengan tatapan menggoda. Ia maju mendekat ke telinga Emma. Napasnya berembus hangat, membuat seluruh tubuh Emma merinding.

"Akan aku pastikan kita berdua benar-benar menikmati malam ini. Anggaplah sebagai hadiah ulang tahunmu untukku. Aku sangat senang bekerja denganmu selama tujuh tahun belakangan ini .... Saat nya kita merayakannya secara kecil-kecilan. Hmm?"

GLEG.

Emma menelan ludahnya. Keringat dingin mulai membasahi dahinya. Lidah Emma keluh bak dipatuk ular. Ia terdiam sambil menutup matanya erat.

Aiden kembali tersenyum lalu menarik jas yang ada di tangan Emma. Emma terkejut dan membuka matanya. Ia refleks menatap ke arah Aiden.

Emma semakin terkejut, wajah Aiden sudah sangat dekat dengan wajahnya. Sepersekian detik terbesit pikiran nakal di kepala Emma saat melihat daya tarik Aiden. Matanya sayu begitu menggoda, bibirnya terlihat mengkilap dan basah, berwarna merah muda samar dan lembut. Wangi tubuhnya begitu memikat. Pahatan wajahnya nyaris sempurna. Mereka terdiam sejenak saling menatap. Napas Emma menjadi sangat tidak beraturan. Mungkin Aiden pria yang paling tampan dan paling menggoda dari semua pria yang ditemui Emma sampai saat ini. Mungkin, jauh di dalam hati Emma, dan tanpa disadarinya ia juga sangat menginginkan Aiden tanpa batasan antara atasan dan bawahan.

Tak bisa dipungkiri Emma pun adalah seorang wanita dewasa yang juga ada di puncak hasrat. Selama ini hidupnya hanya didedikasikan untuk belajar dan bekerja. Apakah ia juga merindukan sentuhan lelaki?

TIDAK EMMA! Kendalikan dirimu! Apa yang kau pikirkan? batin Emm menolak segala godaan yang bermain di alam bawah sadarnya.

Emma menarik napas, mencoba kembali berpijak pada tingkat kesadaran yang nyata.

Aiden melepaskan tatapannya. Ia berbalik arah dan kembali mengenakan jasnya. Aiden berjalan pelan dan keluar dari ruangan.

Emma hanya terus menatap punggung Aiden yang tegap keluar dari sana.

Emma kini menatap pintu yang telah tertutup. Mencoba mencerna kembali perintah yang diterimanya.
