Akanksha did not really live upto expectations. When the ISC results were out, she barely managed to secure 80 per cent and that put paid to whatever hopes she had had of going for MBBS. She would always remember that day when Anurima called her in the afternoon telling her that their results would be out by the evening. 


Akanksha also read about something similar while searching through google. Then, at around 5 in the evening, Mayank called her. The result was available on the net, he informed her. He also told her that he couldn't check her result as the network connection had slowed down considerably. Akanksha got to the Board Website, punched in the numbers, and as soon as she had done so, she could access the sheet with her marks. Her English marks glared at her first - 93. Not bad, thought she. She ran her eyes down to the second line containing her marks for the second language, which, in her case, was Bengali. She secured 87 in Bengali. She couldn't wait any more and ran her eyes down, past her Physics, Chemistry and Biology marks before narrowing her eyes down to the Maths marks. 65. No worries, she thought to herself. The marks didn't count much as her per centage was to be calculated based on her best scores in four subjects. 


She ran her eyes back up to the line with her Physics marks. God! Only 78? She cried out aloud. If her Physics marks were disappointing, her marks in Chemistry were even worse. She scored a mere 72 percent in the subject!


All her dreams of being a great doc one day, like the ones she had read about in those romantic books of Mills and Boons, were first eroding. There was just one more subject left, a subject that was her fave and made her want to be a doctor. A subject she enjoyed studying, and always had performed well in.


This time she ran her index finger along the line for her Biology marks. What was this? Were her eyes playing sone tricks or what? She had told her mom after coming out of the Hall that she couldn't get less than 99 in the paper. She must have done well, Mrs. Sonia felt as her elder daughter had never been very far from predicting her marks after an exam. If she thought she was going to score 99, she might get 98 or 97, but the marks would not come down below 95. She could always predict her marks more or less, exactly! 


The conversation with her mom after the Bio Paper, played in her mind as the significance of the consequences of scoring low in the subject, started registering in her mind. All her hopes of studying Micro-Biology in a reputed college of Kolkata as her second option, were dashed in a matter of seconds. The stark reality was that with 60 in that subject, getting admission even in a second grade college of Kolkata, was not going to be easy. 


Being a decent and spirited girl, she next called a few of her close friends. Anurima was among the Top-10 in CPS, having secured 93%. As Akanksha was about to put her phone down, Anurima congratulated and sympathized with Akanksha:


"Chhor yaar. Hum ek sath BCA (Bachelor of Computer Application) padengey. Thik hain? " (We'll study BCA together, right?)


At around 7 in the evening, when she had finally rung Sana, her bestie up, Sana sounded excited. 


"Look, Akku. Don't be sad, bhai. 80% cannot be that bad. Besides, what difference would that make? Just look at it this way - God wants us together, not separated. That's why we're gonna study, most probably, at the same college."


Akanksha chatted for some more time but she felt that her heart was not there in the insipid talks. She had an intuitive feeling that life after ISC, was not going to be the same again. All her groupmates had performed brilliantly. She was proud of them. But what did the future hold for her? Where would she be a decade from now? 


She found her mind in a haze. All she wanted was to retire to a corner and cry her heart out. Why was Life always being so unfair to her? Why couldn't she have fun and be an achiever, like her friends? 


Akanksha was still in bed with the sheet pulled up to her face in the dark room. There was a bright full moon swimming through the cotton clouds. It was nearly 9 at night, when Ma came to her room. She turned the light on and came up to the bed. 


"Akku, Anu told me that you are not willing to come down to dinner. What's this childishness? You know you gave it your best shot, don't you? What if you didn't score well in a few subjects? That's not the end of the world. Get up, splash some water on your face and come join us for dinner."


"Ma, I ain't hungry. " She whimpered without uncovering her face. 


"You must be. You haven't had a morsel since Mayank called you. I won't listen. You've got to join us at the table, even if you aren't hungry, and it's an order," she sounded almost angry. 


Akanksha had rarely seen her mom so pumped up. She knew why mom was acting so hyper. She was worried. 


"You go join Anu, Ma. I'll be down in a short while."


After dinner, Akanksha was the first to leave the table. Anu, who was generally, the lazybones of the family, especially when it came to doing the dishes and such stuff, offered to do so on her own. She had kept quiet throughout the dinner. She could feel her sister's hurt like no one else. In a way, Akku's disheartening result was a downer for her as well. There were times when Akku could be a bitch. But to her, Akanksha was the ultimate champ. She was the serious, studious girl with big dreams and ideas. Her ISC result was a big let down not only for Akanksha herself but for Anushka as well. 


"Akku, I think you need to go up and try to catch up some sleep. You look devastated, really. Don't worry. I'll help mom with the plates and all." 

She said to Akanksha, pointing to their room. As Akanksha started climbing up the steps, Anushka shouted out to her : "You can put off the lights, if you want."


Akanksha was in bed, receding into the world of quiet and peace, when the mobile started beeping. It was a long distant call. Akanksha stretched out her hand sleepily to disconnect the line, when she found the urge to find out who the caller was, overpowering. 


She pushed the sheet down and the green button of the phone up. The next moment a familiar yet long forgotten voice waifted into her ear. 


"Hi, Akanksha. I sent you a couple of messages earlier. But finding them unanswered, I couldn't resist the temptation of calling you. How is life, young lady?"

God! She could never picture him in such a light mood! 


"Jishnuda, aren't you? Am I not surprised? I'm sure you are calling me about my result, correct?" 

Akanksha and Jishnu had been in touch since he left for the best medical Institution in Delhi exactly two years back. But he never called her before. 


"If that's what you think, what's the point of arguing? I'll come to the point directly then? What's the news?" Jishnu always liked the girl's straight forwardness that might have been mistaken for blunttness, if one didn't know her all that well. 


Akanksha could feel the lump in her throat. How she wished then that she had at least scored a higher percentage in the Boards. 


They both waited for what seemed like an eternity before Jishnu asked her again:


"What's wrong, Akanksha? Are you upset over something? Do you want to talk later?"

There was a note of genuine concern in his voice. That was one reason why Akanksha had always admired him. To the people he looked upon as close to him, he was really a good friend. 


"Jishnuda, you must have already learnt from your friends about my result. My dream of studying Micro-Macro-Biology is gonna be a dream only.I couldn't even get 80 per cent !"

She could speak no more as her voice choked. 


There was a long pause. Such a long one that Akanksha was beginning to wonder if he was there at all at the other end, when he uttered :


"Anyway, Congrats, Akanksha. Let me tell you what someone told me long ago. Everything happens for a reason. I'm sure this is the beginning of a very successful life."

And before his words could register in her mind, Jishnu spoke again, "I'll get back to you through Facebook in a day Or two. Till then, get a hold on yourself and enjoy life."


The next moment the line went dead in her hand, leaving her, she couldn't tell why, wide awake and feeling alive in an otherwise most depressing day! 

" Hey, what are you doing here? Are you crazy, go get ready first. The wedding will start in one hour and there are so rituals to complete, leave now. " She scolded her brothers as they were gossiping still. They left the room to get ready, after getting scolded by Soha. 

" Big bro, come here and stand still, let me fix your dhoti properly. " She fixed his dhoti and punjabi which was looking so perfect on him. She put the rose garland on his neck and the topor on his head. 

" Hmm, perfect now. Lets go, boro maa is waiting for you. " 

" When will you get ready? I will not leave without you. " 

" Yeah, I know. I'll be ready in shortly. You go. " She left to her room, to get ready for the night.

Outside everyone started finding her. As its time to leave now. 

" Where is she? Did you find her? " Maya asked Kunal, as maya and naina was finding her. But he was busy looking at her beautiful look. She wore a beautiful grey coloured lehenga with a grey coloured sleeveless blouse, she had curled the edge of her shoulder length hair and let them down, with a light makeup she wore bangles in her two hands and a pair of big jhumkas on her ears. She was looking ravishing. And Kunal was unable to turn his eyes from her. 

Whereas Naina wore a beautiful royal blue coloured off shoulder crop top with a royal blue coloured designer lehenga. She let her waist length hair down and wore a pair of matching earrings and finger rings. She left her neck and hands empty. 

" Are you even listening to us? " They asked getting annoyed by their silence. 

" We don't know, baby. Maybe she is busy somewhere, don't worry she will reach on time. " They came close to their woman and pulled them with themselves. 

" Where is Soha, we have to go now. " The elders hurried looking towards the watch. 

" Here I am, lets go. " They turned around to look at her. She was standing with Amayra. 
Amayra was looking gorgeous in her black deep cut round neck blouse and beige coloured designer lehenga. 

Whereas Soha was wearing an off shoulder crop top and a beautiful off white coloured lehenga with pink and silver coloured embroidery all over it. She was looking fantastic. 

" We have to go now, all the rituals here are completed. Let's go. " Tuhin's father walked out with the others. 

" Sure, brother give me that topor. " Soha took that topor from Tuhin. 

" Mom, kakima, please let's go. Or jethu will get angry. You all are looking fabulous, don't worry. " She said helplessly and pulled them with her. 

They reached the pavilion soon. The mother of the bride welcomed the groom inside after completing the rituals on the gate. There were beautiful sitting arrangements for the groom. So Tuhin sat there, gossiping with the boys. 

" Let's go, you have to sit in mandap, the wedding rituals will start. " Rohit came to take Tuhin to mandap as the wedding will start. 

" Hey, what happened Tuhin? " But looking at his face Kunal and Ronit get tensed, he is not ready to go. 

" I don't know, I am feeling nervous suddenly. "

" Nervous? Are you serious? Its your wedding today, brother. Hell, everyone is waiting for you. " Rohit tried to make him understand but he was too much nervous. 

" Guys, stay with him, I'll call Soha, only she can solve this problem. " Ronit ran towards the mandap where Soha was standing with the other girls. 

" Soha, I must say that you had organised the wedding so perfect. " Abinash praised her looking the most beautiful mandap. The mandap was wonderful, fully decorated with fresh flowers. In the middle of the large pavilion, there's chairs surrounding the mandap for the guests to watch the wedding. 

" I didn't do anything, my team did this wonder, they are the actual claimants of this praises. They did the hard work to get this wedding so perfect. You should praise my world famous chefs, who prepared all the exotic dishes for the guests. " She gave the credit to all her team members, who organized the grand wedding. 

" Doll, we have a problem. " Ronit huffed reaching her, he tried to call her, but it was not connecting. Soha was standing with Abhirup and his father. Hearing his voice they turned. 

" What happened? And where's big brother? " She asked him getting tensed. Looking at Ronit's tensed face. 

" Tuhin is having wedding jitters. He is nervous wrecked and not ready to sit in mandap. "

" Are you kidding me? There are so many prestigious guests and he is feeling nervous?  I have to talk to him, you manage the situation here for at least 10 minutes, I'll get him. "

" Hey, can I come with you? " He asked looking at her tensed face. She just nodded and walked away with him from the mandap towards the stage, where the guys were standing tensed. 

" Big bro, what happened? " She asked him, holding his hand, Abhirup stood there giving them time.

" Doll, I am feeling nervous, I don't think I am ready for this. I cannot become a good husband. See, my hands are shaking. " He said holding his sister's hand tightly. 

" Look at me, who said that you cannot became a good husband? Just because you are feeling nervous, you think you are not a perfect husband? 

Remember the day you performed your first heart surgery? You were even more nervous than tonight, but still you performed it and it was very much successful. So the moral of the story is, feeling nervous is not a crime, its ohk to feel nervous. You believe me, right? I am telling you, you will be a very good husband. Now breath in and out with me. " Soha explained and comfort him first then breath in and out with him to make him feel relaxed a little. She gave him a glass of water. 

" Feeling better? Ready to go? " She asked him, after his finished drinking the glass of water. 

" Yeah I am ready, lets go. Everyone is waiting for us. " He stood up reliving everyone. They took a relaxed breath. And set out for the wedding. 

Soha gave Abhirup a silent nod and left with her brothers. He replied to her nod, while standing there mesmerized by the amazing scene, she was an awesome person, full of surprises. From the day he met her, every single moment he get a new surprise from her. And every single moment she was pulling him towards her, without even trying. 

He, the man who never even looked towards someone more than a second, now just finding excuses to stare at her beautiful face. The man who is even busier than the persident of the country, now finding excuses every single moment to spend time with her. He smiled thinking about this changes while walking towards the mandap. 

The music started informing the guests, of the bride's arrival. Four men carrying her as she was sitting on the wooden seat covering her face with a big betel leaf. 

They entered inside the mandap where the groom was standing in his full glory. They rounded the bride around the groom for seven times, then stopped in front of him, for the suvadristi and malabodol. Suvodristi started but Dipshikha wasn't removing the paan pata from her face. She sat still, whereas Tuhin was getting impatient to look her face. After so much requests from everyone, she slowly removed it from her face and stared at him. She was looking breathtakingly beautiful in her Blood red zardousi banarashi saree and all the gold jewelries. She was looking like a goddess, Tuhin just stared at her, without even batting eyelashes. After their staring at each other for what felt like eternity, the purohit told them to exchange the garlands. 

They exchanged the garlands and sat down on their seats for the other rituals.

Weirdest ?

They've reached the capital with no problems and Monojit brought her to his Aunt's house where he lived. Ronjon had to separate ways but promised he'll pick her up to bring her to his mentor.

The next day, Ronjon drove a borrowed car with Monojit at the front seat and Asha at the back. He drove the long way in the busy streets for Asha's entertainment. She was full of bewilderment. This was her first trip to a big bustling city. Paak was nothing. Her eyes sparkled watching the big buildings, nice restaurants, large stores, and food carts selling variants of food on the roadside. She would visit those food carts later, she thought. 

Ronjon stopped the car in front of a decent building within a university. The tag-along Monojit wouldn't dare to be separated from her even for a second. Ronjon led them into a big room filled with different kinds of knives, kitchen accessories, and bottles of various sizes. It occupied half of the room. She could tell the owner loved cooking.

"My mentor's name is Gael Berger. He's French," said Ronjon.

"French?" said Asha stupefied. She had no exposures with foreigners making her ignorant.

"Ah, he came from another country called France," Monojit added.

"Ah," Asha spoke with apprehension knotted in her stomach. This would be her first to talk to a foreigner. How to talk to a foreigner? Her brows knitted.

Ronjon could sense her uneasiness and expected to enjoy the shock on her face later. They sat waiting after Ronjon informed a student. The latter walked into a dark room and went back telling them to wait for a while. The student greeted Ronjon again and wished to chat with him about an assignment but Ronjon refused. As a celebrity chef, he couldn't give special treatment to any student of his mentor. This was the rule Mister Berger told him. They had to learn on their own.

Five minutes after, a black haired man with bushy eyebrows and ivory skin, in Asha's point of view, came out from a room. 

"Nomoshkar," He gestured the greeting sign, "I'm Gael Berger, a simple chef at your service." He spoke in fluent Bangla. Asha's jaw dropped. If she closes her eyes, she would have mistaken him as a Bengali. Ronjon laughed, he expected this. Monojit only smiled at her reaction. She was lovelier than ever in his eyes.

"Gael Bhai, meet Asha. She is the lady I mentioned in my letter."

Gael extended his hand. Asha was unsure whether to shake hands or not. Ronjon and Monojit looked away giggling. Gael's hand was still extended. She touched the hand slightly and thought of pulling it back but Gael grabbed it and shook it with liveliness. 

'It seems not bad to shake hands with a man.' Her eyes twinkled with a newfound experience.

"Okay, Ronjon told me you want to study to become a lady chef?"

"Yes"

"Why?"

Asha was dumbfounded. Why? She bit her lower lip and tried to think of an intelligent answer.

Gael continued. "What's your motivation to pursue a career as a chef when the competition would be hard as a woman."

"I want to prove to everyone that women could be good chefs and not just at home and I want to bring back my father's recipe alive again." She said it straightforwardly.

"Are you sure? That seems to be a very vague dream."

Asha's mind went blank. What else could she say?

"I suggest you search your heart and come back when you found your own answer. Excuse me, I still have a class to teach." Gael left them.

Asha was confused. "What's wrong with my answer?"

"Why not try to analyze his question? What's your real motivation to become a lady chef?"

Asha's head drooped. "I need to think. I'm confused now."

"Don't think too much. How about you try the food here in the Capital. You might find your answer." Monojit suggested with his best smile.

"Well, that's a good way to give yourself time. I'm starving too." Ronjon saw her blank face earlier and was planning ways to help her find her answer.

"Let's go," said Monojit and held Asha's elbow leading her to the door.

"Can I ask a favor?" Asha said with great anticipation that they wouldn't reject her request.

The two waited for her to continue. "Can we try those food carts at the street?" Asha said it finally.

"Sure," the two exclaimed.

Asha gave them a sweet smile, taking their breath away.

They visited every cart Asha pointed until their bellies were bulging. "No more, Asha. I'm full." Monojit sat in the car patting his big stomach.

"Let's go home for now. I hope you're ready for your answers tomorrow, Asha," said Ronjon.

"Honestly, I'm still confused but I really enjoyed this food trip." Her words assured the two worried boys and smiled with her.

Even though she said those words, her mind wasn't the least bit at peace. What was the answer Gael wanted to hear?

Asha is now on the brink of helplessness and despair. Would she let despair to chase her for the rest of her life? Thus, she faces the man who wanted her dead and to stand as a woman in the world of chefs. 

She will create her own dishes and make his father's recipes alive again. Her adventures lead to clues of the real killer of his father and get entangles with love. 

Somehow, when she is face to face with the murderer, will she forgive or not? The Recipe of Love will show her the right decision to make.

This is a story of a girl in her journey to become a lady chef while in life-threatening situations and falls in love. So, don't expect a fast pace cooking battles. It is Asha's journey.

The setting of the story is India before its Independence in 1947. The exact timeline is 1945. However, in the first part of the story, I didn't use during the British occupation since the places/villages I mentioned do not exist in the present country. I used Bangla words since the culture is more on present Bangladesh. 

This is absolutely a fiction story.

I turned my body away from Maldonius as he changed into his dragon form. A part of me was saying, "fuck it, a lot of weird shit has been happening lately, is it really actually weird for a man-shift in dragon to appear as well?". While another part of me was saying, "oh dear Lord I have actually gone crazy, I must be tripping or something from a high intake of skittles.".
 
I pouted. I missed skittles. Those little bite-sized chewy candies were always my favorite in my past life. I shook my fist at the sky. Of all the things that I had to lose with my rebirth, it had to be skittles?
 
Fate truly is cruel.
 
"You may now turn around human."
 
I turned back to see the large dragon in the water once more. On the deck, next to the railing was Maldonius's clothes. I furrowed my eyebrows. If the man lost his clothes when he transforms then where the fuck did he get these clothes from. I turned to see a naked crew member from Weston's division. I flushed and covered his "area" with Maldonius's scales were white and translucent as they reflected the morning sun. I gasped in awe as I watched the clear scales which ran the length of his snake-like form shine with a slight rainbow-colored hue. 
 
It was truly breathtaking. 
 
I wiped away my drool. 
 
This was no time to gawk at the beauty of a creature. I don't know how long my crew members could stay asleep like this. I needed to act fast. If this all was just some sort of dream, then holy fuck, I must've ate some weird shit earlier for dinner. Jacia was the one cooking after all. 
 
Maldonius then set his large head on the edge of the ship gently as I climbed on top. I felt my legs freeze from the icy air radiating from Maldonius's head. 
 
"Hey half dragon, half human dude, how old are you?"
 
Maldonius let out an icy gust of air as I shivered. 
 
"Don't get cocky human. I'm probably older than your greatest ancestor. A dragon's spirit lives multiple lives as you have."
 
Wait a second, Maldonius knows that I've reincarnated? Does he possibly know a way how I can go back?
 
 
"Maldonius, if you know that I have reincarnated, do you also know a way how I could go back to my previous life?"
 
Maldonius blew out another gust of air as his large eyes closed. 
 
"Why should I tell you human? You haven't earned my acknowledgment yet. Succeed in the three trials then I will consider telling you."
 
I clenched my fists. It is essential that I succeed. My mind swirled with possible trials or obstacles. I mentally scanned all of the historical details I had in my mind regarding legends of monsters or etc., but I came up with nothing. All I knew about was fictional situations to do with Greek Gods thanks to a certain Percy Jackson. 
 
I sighed as Maldonius's large eyes slid over to appraise me. My heart trembled as he rose his head slightly and turned. I reached over and held on to his ears as he swiftly moved through the water away from my ship. The air blowing my hair back along with the skin on my face. Mentally I imagined the fact that I looked like a model being blown by a fan. When in reality some sort of fly flew into my open mouth, my skin was pulled back as if I got a failed Botox, and my hair was spiked all over the place. And to top it all off I wasn't smiling in a cool way but screaming at the top of my lungs. 
 
Maldonius's chuckle vibrated as I feared to look behind me or else I would get a severe whiplash. The world around me blurred as this motherfucking dragon moved at lightning speed. i couldn't even enjoy the view. A couple minutes later Maldonius stopped. I covered my mouth as I felt my last meal rise to exit the natural way. Maldonius then said. 
 
"Oi, human, don't vomit all over my head. Us, dragons treasure that part of us the most, it is our pride and joy."
 
I wanted to throw up on his head just to piss him off as much as he pisses me off. I sighed and closed my eyes. Now is the time to be a mature individual. I opened my eyes to see a large island of some sorts face me. Trees taller than the dragon himself faced me to form a large forest. Sand decorated the shore, as a large ziggurat shaped building stood in the middle of the island. Maldonius set his head down on the sand as I slid off and stepped down. I threw off my shoes and held them in my hand. A second later I turned to see Maldonius back to his human form. He wasn't naked this time. Instead he wore long silk robes which exposed his bare chest and legs. Golden bangles hung around his ankles, wrists, and neck. Instead of his blue hair, Maldonius now had red hair and golden eyes. He puts historical tyrant kings to shame with his looks.  I turned to cover the fact that my nose was bleeding. 
 
I need to focus on my first task now. I turned and said to Maldonius. 
 
"What is the first trial?"
 
Maldonius smiled as he snapped his fingers. Three large Bengali tigers emerged from the forest and growled as they approached me. Maldonius smirked as he said.

I gulped as the three tigers looked at me with their tails swinging back and forth. Their azure eyes glistening as they appraised me as their next meal. I chuckled nervously. 
 
"And what if i can't fulfill that task."
 
Maldonius chuckled before answering. 
 
"I think that we both know the answer to that."
 
I nodded and looked at the tigers. Honestly they weren't scaring me as a certain something. The forest that was surrounding the Ziggurat building gave me the creeps. Something was in there. And that something I would come to later know as a gate into hell itself. 
 
Despite the simplicity of the first trial, nothing would prepare me for the night awaiting me.

Sushil made his way to one of the manholes through which three people had entered.

It was located in an alley out of the way of traffic and pedestrians, a design choice made to minimize the inconvenience to the citizens due to sewer maintenance work. A design choice which had facilitated the operation of whatever shady racket Raunak Bose was running.

Sushil shot a glance to his right. There, blending with the shadows, moving with an utterly silent gate was the chauffeur of the Adhikari family. Feeling his gaze upon him, the tall dark and silent man glanced at him briefly before turning away.

Supernaturally silent movement, enhanced senses and a practised knack of moving within shadows. The man was an expert. One comparable in skill to himself.

Sushil turned his attention back to the task at hand. The man, Ravi as he was called, had given him the cold shoulder. Probably none too pleased with being conscripted to participate in such a dangerous task.

They reached the manhole and Sushil leveraged it up with the handle. He set it aside, revealing the entrance to the sewers. The dark hole looked like the gaping maw of a beast waiting to swallow them up.

Shaking off the uncanny feeling, the both of them climbed down the ladder and landed on the sides of the sewer, away from the rill of sludge water that ran through the middle.

The latest in sanitation technology that included biological filters meant that the cloying smell that had pervaded sewers not so long ago was absent. Yet, the sludge contained enough detergent and household chemicals to render it quite toxic. Sushil didn't fancy getting his feet wet.

Ravi dropped down by his side, silently. He had drawn the cover back over their heads, plunging the sewers into darkness. Sushil blinked a few times before his cat-like pupils dilated and his night vision kicked in.

Ravi brought out a pair of night vision goggles and switched them on. The two of them silently made their way to the grating they knew was the entrance to the tunnel. They had already scoped the place out beforehand and their steps were sure and precise.

Reaching the tunnel, they were confronted with the obstacle of the electronic lock.

Sushil brought out a small vial of liquid and poured it over the lock while activating a signal jammer at the same time. The lock was wirelessly connected to some sort of alarm. Whenever it was opened, it would send a notification. Just like the pressure sensors Sushil had installed on the manholes.

The chemical fluid soon ate through the lock and it fell off. The grating swung open silently.

The two of them stepped into the tunnel that went to the bunker.

It was a crude construct, just a tunnel gouged out of the earth, really. The crumbly soil of its walls seemed quite unstable, supported by wooden crossbeams.

The two of them navigated the tunnel to its end, cautiously, on full alert for any sentries. They found none.

Suddenly, they felt a muffled drumbeat travel through the layers of soil that separated from the ground. The climax of the Puja had begun.

Aman heard the first roll of the large drums known as the dhak as he overlooked the pandal from his vantage atop the roof.

He could imagine the scene in his mind's eye.

The interior of the pandal would have been cleared and the purohit (the brahmin priest) would have started his chanting of the sutras praising the Devi.

The drummers, in their colourful garb, with their large drums slung on their shoulders would be leaping and twirling to the rhythm of their beats as they moved together in a circle in front of the idol of the Goddess slaying her foe. The long feathers attached to their drums fluttering in the breeze of their motion.

In the centre of the circle, men dressed in the traditional Bengali attire of dhoti and a kurta and men dressed in their saris would be joining their hands in supplication to the Devi. With the first beat of the drums, they would move.

Censers, earthen goblets filled with camphor and coconut husks would be lit. The thick white smoke from them draping the entire ring of dancers in a haze. Then the men and the women, in the centre of the ring of dhakis (the drummers) would pick up the censers – the dhunuchis – and they would dance.

It was the traditional dance called the dhunuchi naach. To demonstrate their devotion to the Devi, their love of the Goddess, their gratitude to her, these men and women danced with literal goblets of fire in their hands and for the most experienced and devout of dancers, even held in their teeth.

The smoke would swirl and roil as they moved to the frenzied beat of the drummers.

Dhak dhak dhak da-dhak da-dhak dak da-da-dhak da-da-dhak.

A beat no Bengali will ever forget no matter how far they are from home. Even on the other side of the world with oceans separating them from their hometown.

They danced, the purohit chanted his sutras, the drummers leapt and twirled as they played the beat that swayed the hearts of the crowd.

One could not stand in that mass of people, witness that dance, the magnificence of that idol, the opulence of that pandal, feel the hearts of thousands beating to the beats of reverence and remain unmoved.

Aman was moved.

Not by reverence, but by horror.

The Gene Era has begun. Mankind has taken their first steps on the Road to Perfection.
