Hello, to anyone who still cares enough to read this. 

Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to the people who gave me feedback on my novel and supported me during my short three-week run. For that, I am eternally grateful. 

I kind of disappeared out of the blue without saying anything because I couldn't take it anymore. It was stupid of me to do, but here I will be trying to list my reasons and I hope you can understand.

I began to write for WebNovel after seeing their advertisement for up and coming authors to make a living off of writing. I hate myself for being so naive. Looking back on it now, it was like falling for any other scam on the internet. Stuff like "Doctor's hate him because ... " and "Sign up to win ... " Etc Etc. 

As a twenty-three-year-old university student working two jobs, the only time I could fit to write was during the hours of 12 am and 5 am. It was literally killing me to publish chapters as I began to fall asleep in class, and my performance at work got a bit sloppy. 

But for the most part, I enjoyed writing the chapters because I loved to write. I loved to publish a chapter and stalk it until someone posted a reply. That moment when the first person said something meant the world to me. Because it meant someone cared that my story existed, and for this reason, I tried to push myself to put out more and more chapters. 

Things started to go wrong though, as most things do. Webnovel's feedback system is the most depressing thing. It actively tracked how many people had my novel in their collection and how many total views the novel had. However, the only number that matter was the collections. 

The thing was, these numbers were always bugged and never gave me a clear indication as to the scale of my readers. Aside from the usual comments from return readers, the number didn't mean anything. It was like running in one spot, over and over without any clear indication to if I was making any progress. It's horrible when the work you put in seems to yield basically no results. 

I was feeling euphoric watching my collections pass 100. You guys don't know the scale to my happiness. I basically woke up my whole household in celebration.

Then, in the author's discord channel, they confirmed that everything on the interface was bugged. Yep, talk about a slap in the face. 

To summarize ... I was and still am a hopeful about making a career out of my writing. But doing it on Webnovel is ill-advised. Unless that is if you are writing a fan-fiction or another cliche 'system' novel. In that case, I believe you'll find much success. 

Also, if you guys want to know the biggest reason for my departure from WN; in the search function, look up 'Da Contract'. It's the actual web novel contract. Even if you guys don't know the lingo its fine. Just take a look through and you'll understand my frustrations. 

The staff never really cared about us authors either. They seldom gave out prizing for contests and were hush-hush about even attaining a contract. But reading through it ... this thing is a slave contract. I kid you not. Anyone who is desperate enough to sign, I give you my condolences. But it's completely and utterly unbefitting of a professional "employer-producer" relationship. 

And the fact that tried to keep the contract under wraps ... they knew what they were doing.

Thankfully, a fellow author "ink bamboo" was quick to point this out to me. Otherwise, I would possibly be still slaving away here, with no end in sight. I probably would have hung myself if all my stress ended up culminating with being presented with this contract ... 

There are so many things I want to say, but I find myself more and more depressed as I think about it. An entire month of my life down that drain ... it feels bad.

I was told to try my hand with self-publishing on Amazon with Kindle. I believe it's more worth it for me to try there. If people buy my book and like it, at least I can get immediate feedback. If it doesn't work out... well, I suppose it just means I don't have the talent for writing.

Imperious Edge will continue, but not here. Not in this depressing hellscape. 

To my frequent readers, I am sorry, deeply and truly sorry that I have let you down. I can only hope you understand my choices. I often end my chapters with a bow, and to that, I give you my final respectful gesture as I sign off here. 

Perhaps it's asking too much, but I hope you guys would care enough to support me in my endeavours to becoming an amateur author. When I publish my first Volume, I will update this.

Today I woke up. Checked my email. And apparently I got a contract invitation by Webnovel. I didn't even know that was a thing, I though we gotta apply for that shit ah. 

Anyway, I don't know if they say this to all their invited contract people but they said they read my work and praised my story as 'filled with imagination, has a fresh and interesting plot and well-crafted characters that speak deeply about your passion and talent for creation. Anyway I'm like low key hoping it's copy and pasted praise because ugh it's like the parents you didn't know about finding your fanfiction and then praising you for how well Sasuke ***** Naruto in the ***, which... I totally didn't read when I was younger (¬_¬)

Anyway, anyway, what do you guys think about the contract? First off I'll get gift donations which is cool, I'm always looking at other stories being like damn I want a balloon from my readers too. But the profits you get is apparently 50:50 with the website. Which I mean, I sort of get since they'll help advertise etc.

Same with privilege ah. 50:50. Also premium chapters I may not get any cash at all since apparently it depends whether the coins are bought with real money? (And I know I don't do that personally. I grind out my daily free chapter tickets like a cheapskate lol).

However they do promise more exposure and will even offer to translate the story into different languages which sounds really good.  I'm a slut for praise. And international praise sounds reaaaal nice. And even though I love the donations you guys are giving me... I love the idea of forcing you to pay mor- lol jokes I'm kidding. But it would be nice to generate a bit more stable cash flow and as someone who wants to write more on the future (guys I'm at the point of my life where I just graduated and am looking for jobs that I don't even like and not qualified for anyway and it's terrifying) it may be good for me ah. It'll at least get me a foot in the door and such. 

I'm gonna go ask them some further questions now about this in a day or twos time? I can't think up many questions (what they expect for weekly chapters etc?) but if you think I should ask something just paragraph comment here. He also out his books that he had always been carrying on a bookshelf inside the room that they were going to test in.

"You will work for eight hours, and then your shift will be over. You can continue to work if you want and I will pay you to a certain extent. After eight hours, you can do whatever you want," Jack continues, taking out a bowl of his blood to reestablish the contracts.

They all logged off again to sleep, and returned in the morning.

After getting to work, Jack was moving around furiously, freezing their herbs for them.

After eight hours, Jack paid them four silver each.

They stocked up all of the shelves with health potions. Jack immediately left to Denzel's to try and make the [Freezing Array]. No one had come by the shop yet, because they hand opened it.

They would open tomorrow though, so he needed to make a few freezing arrays before it opened, so he would have some more time.

Using the remaining materials he had, he managed to make three freezing arrays. Though they weren't perfect and had their effects reduced, they would still get the job done.

He bought a few more mana crystals which drained the rest of his money.

Setting each array on their respective tables, he placed the magic crystals onto the nodes, activating it.

Now he wouldn't have to run around, freezing everything.

The products would start selling tomorrow, and the money would just roll in. He couldn't wait.

After the first day of sales, he would use the money to by more array materials and try to improve his potions.m

For now though, he could practice drawing magic circles. The quicker he could cast a spell, the less mana it would use initially.

He had eight hours to practice before his workers were done with their shifts. So he did that boring work that only a few others would do willingly.

For eight hours straight, he worked his ass of making magic circles. He had a mana gathering array, so his recovery speed was incredible.

He also took out his buckler and never received any wounds.

He was back in the level zero zone, practicing drawing circles. He was trying to create three circles in a row. 

He was getting the hang of it. He didn't need to actually focus all the time on one thing to just pull the particles into place.

He just needed to create a quick pulling force, and apparently magic physics was a thing, which used momentum to gather around him, giving him space to focus more on other tasks.

After six hours of hard work, he managed to be able to create magic circles without needing to straighten out their lines anymore, increasing his speed tremendously.

He could now make the inner and outer circle in ten seconds. He managed to create two complete circles and a half of the inner circle of his third magic circle.

This time, he wanted to practice drawing runes. He needed to be able to draw draw five runes within a second to be able to get his spell casting speed of the [Icy Mist] spell to 16 seconds.

That was still a massive number. Sixteen seconds in the middle of a battle was a massive number.

He still needed to get to that number before he could improve further though, so he began drawing runes.

Suddenly though, his mana gathering array ran out of magic crystals to use. He added the magic crystals yesterday, so it was natural for them to run out right now, but this lest a realization made by Jack.

Arrays use Runes, drawn like a character in a language. Why couldn't he just do that. Condense all the magic particles into one area and write with it like a pen!

This simple deduction actually took him so long to make. His previous thoughts about magic and how it should be was what restricted him.

Magic was something that you couldn't touch. So you obviously couldn't write with it.

That assumption was completely wrong. You could write with it, not physically though. Just like drawing, it was named that for a reason.

He just needed to write the Runes like he was writing characters from his language. It was just like writing sentences. Except the words were Runes.

He was going to attempt casting one last time before heading out to see the amount of money his little workers had made.

Condensing am extreme amount of mana into one point, took him only three seconds. Within another three, he drew the inner and outer circles of the spell.

His finger was constantly moving like it was writing. This just gave him a better grasp and a more physical representation of drawing.

It helped him visualize. He began writing the Runes, his finger like lightning, flashing around.

After ten seconds, he completed all the runes. The spell was complete. He could reduce the time even further if he had a little bit more practice and got use to the new method of spell casting he just learned.

Returning to his little shop that he had yet to name, he saw all of the racks on the shelves empty.

Health potions were still in demand and their only good supplier was Jack. With three people, in three hours on the previous day, they were able to make 216 elixirs.

So every day, they could produce 540 elixirs. All sold at 40 bronze each, they would make two gold and sixteen silver.

The piece of ingredients were 86 silver and 40 bronze. 20% of the profit went to Denzel as well, which meant he got 25 silver and 92 bronze.

He also had to pay the employees, so he himself made 91 silver and 68 bronze.

Denzel was actually, currently getting free money, because Jack was actually paying Denzel for the ingredients at market price as well. Since he was also getting a portion of the profit, that made him even more money.

He was going to pay Denzel a little visit later. He managed to make that mistake due to the excitement of unlimited resources and 'thanks' to Denzel for providing materials for him.

The times have changed now and he the gratitude he felt earlier didn't really matter now, as he was being cheated for a large sum of money.

He paid the workers, sending them off to do whatever they wanted to do, and went to the market.

Working to the armor section, he was going to purchase a few more pieces of armor.

His [Magic Buckler] and [Magic Guarding Cloak] were good and all, but didn't provide any protection from physical attacks.

He also needed some intimidation factor against Denzel. If he wanted to get Denzel to recreate the contract, he needed to scare him into doing it.

Who would willingly recreate a contract that was making them free money?

From stall to stall, he bought five pieces of armor.

It gave a three piece, and five piece set bonus for wearing five pieces of the same named set.

For three pieces, it was a passive skill called [Infantry March]. It erased the weight he felt from wearing it before.

The five piece set bonus was a passive skill called [Plated Steel] which increased his Physical Defense by 10%.

This wasn't just to intimidate Denzel though, he also wanted to experience monster hunting. Even though he wanted to make money, he also wanted to experience what this game has to offer.

So he also bought a weapon for ten silver.

He could hold his buckler as well as shoot the crossbow, which made it a great choice, as the crossbow was designed in a way that allowed Jack to use his buckler in conjunction with his crossbow.

He was going to terrify Denzel first though.

He bought twenty bolts for 5 bronze each. He was going to be using these to threaten Denzel.

Entering Denzel's, he looked like a terrifying metal monster. His cloak was covered with pieces of plated metal, he was pretty much one if the best geared player in Battle World currently.

"Hey Denzel..." Jack said sinisterly. He felt bad that he had to do this, but he didn't want Denzel to just freeload off of his profit.

He exited his personal brewing room and looked at Jack.

"Wow! You've really went shopping for some expensive stuff!" Denzel said.

"I'd like to change our contract," Jack declared.

"Oh! How would you like to change it?" Denzel asked.

"You will no longer be getting the 20% profit, but I'll buy your ingredients 10% above market price," Jack said.

"What! No way!" Denzel said surprised. He had currently been making an enormous sum of money because of Jack. He didn't want to lose that source of income now!

"Change it, or I will force you to," Jack said. He wasn't really use to the whole bad guy act, so he sounded kind of strange when he was talking.

"What are you going to do? Kill me! You don't have the balls. I'll milk you for all the cash you got!" Denzel mocked. How dare this lowlife try and threaten him.

Jack took out his crossbow and loaded a bolt. He didn't know what level Denzel was, but his level probably wasn't to high, otherwise he would have killed Jack already.

"Your not actually going to shoot me! Come in then! Shoot!" Denzel yelled at Jack with a disgusting smile on his face.

Jack sighed. How did he not realize how disgusting Denzel was this entire time. Sure he always had that disgusting smile, and that laugh... never mind.

He wouldn't die from just one shot, right? Jack shot a bolt right into Denzel's stomach. Even if Denzel was just an NPC, he was still extremely lifelike, which made Jack feel pretty  guilty when he shot Denzel in the stomach.

"How dare you! I, an alchemist, am far above you! You aren't even good enough to lick my shoes!" Denzel screamed.


Were all alchemists going to be this arrogant?

"Never mind. I've changed my mind," Jack said, this one line making Denzel delighted.

"I actually just want to cancel the contract. Also..." Jack said as he waved his hand a bit.

His summoned aid appeared before him.

"I'll also take this back," Jack said.

"What! You can't take it back! The contract says you have to give it to me! Or you will die!" Denzel yelled arrogantly.

"No. The contract said I would let you borrow him. I can take him back whenever I want," Jack responded.

"You!" Denzel screeched seething in anger.

Jack loaded another bolt into his crossbow. 

"Let's cancel the contract now, or I will kill you," Jack voiced, his tone getting colder each word. He no longer felt guilty about shooting Denzel. 

"You can't do that! That's murder!" Denzel screamed fearfully. He, an alchemist can't die here!

"Obviously. Are you an idiot?" Jack mocked as he aimed his crossbow at Denzel.

Denzel was already bleeding profusely from the first shot. This next shot would end him.

"No!" Denzel yelled as he shot his hand towards Jack, releasing a spell. A bolt of ice shot at Jack.

He just raised his buckler, blocking the ice bolt while holding the crossbow in his other hand.

Denzel was in despair. It took him ten seconds to prepare that spell. He wouldn't have enough time to prepare another one before Jack killed him.

"Wait, Wait, Wait. We can talk this out right? How about reducing my share to 10%?" Denzel asked, still his tone extremely arrogant.

"Denzel. Shut the fuck up and let's just cancel the contract. I'll leave you be and we'll never interact again," Jack said, finger about to pull the trigger.

Even if he did kill Denzel, this game was still incredibly realistic. They wouldn't know until someone reported the body.

So if they never report the body, they'll never find out that Jack killed him. Once Denzel died, the contract would automatically end.

He wouldn't be punished in any way, because the contract didn't say he couldn't kill Denzel. He would just lose a major source of ingredients.

Denzel got his ingredients from an outside source. Jack didn't know about this outside source, so once Denzel was gone, they wouldn't have any ingredients.

Jack had a way to solve this problem though, after all, he wasn't an idiot.

Jack shot his crossbow, piercing Denzel through his heart. There was a lot of blood, but it was late at night in the game, and no one came to Denzel's shop anymore.

Wow! Denzel gave him a massive amount of experience. A level one normal monster would give him 10 exp, but Denzel went far beyond that and awarded him what a level five boss would give him.

It was ridiculous.

He would distribute the attribute points later. He first needed to dispose of the body. What better place then inside of Denzel's lab!

Entering Denzel's personal brewing room, Jack places Denzel's body down into the ground.

There! Finished. No one would actually come into Denzel's shop. After all, this was only a beginner village. No other NPC would come patrol around and figure out Denzel has been missing. 

They would just do their work. Sure they would find it suspicious that Denzel disappeared, but they wouldn't care.

The begging we villages was an easier place to carry out an NPC murder, because no one would investigate.

There were no tax collectors in this beginner village, so no one would visit the shop.

All of his customers, which were already few, have already been pulled to Jack's business.

He cleaned up the blood, leaving nothing to be suspicious about. He began searching around the building, discovering the storage room.

It was linked to Denzel's laboratory, but the door was hidden behind a bookshelf. He was able to find it due to the fact that Denzel was extremely arrogant, and didn't think anyone would dare enter his brewing room.

The bookshelf wasn't completely covering the door, so Jack was able to find it easily. Moving the bookshelf he opened the door.

Inside, there was a vast amount of ingredients. There was enough for his little workers to use for a month without running out!

There were also other ingredients that Jack hasn't used yet. After looking around for a little longer, he found a box.

Opening it, he found a bag of money. Pouring the contents out, 20 gold spilled out! Jack slowly began planning, he knew exactly what he needed to do from here on out.

He logged off for the night, it was going to be an eventful next day.

Logging back on, Jack decided to distribute his stats. He put one point into dexterity, two into intelligence, and two into strength. He would be needing the strength.

His stat menu now looked like this.

The first step of his plan was to go to the task manager. He was going to buy another building with his new fortune.

"Hello task manager!" Jack said enthusiastically.

"I didn't expect you to be back so soon," the task manager said laughing dryly.

"I'd like to purchase another building," Jack continued.

"What plot of land would you like?" he asked.

He showed two plots of land. Jack had already purchased one, so there were only two left.

He bought the one closest to his shop. It cost him three silver, but that was a small sum. When choosing the building, he just wanted a large empty room. It had around 1,500 square meters of space.

His only requirement was to have it have two giant double doors at the front. This cost him 30 silver.

It was instantly built. Now came the long and boring step of his plan. He transported all of Denzel's goods into his new warehouse.

It took him four hours, but he did it. There weren't just ingredients in there though. There were also alchemical tools and apparatus.

Everything in there combined would be a massive sum of money. The developers didn't expect a player to straight up murder an NPC.

Especially an important one like an alchemist! 

He left the warehouse, ready to change give his workers more jobs. He was also going to hire some NPC's if he could.

It would be much easier that way. He returned to Denzel's shop, and began taking all of his books and notes, transporting them into the experimentation lab of his shop.

He kept a few to himself though.

These books made him elated! The first and third book was something he was going to use in the next step of his plan.

The flame magic book was just something extra that made him excited.

After paying his group, he began said something that made them all extremely happy.

"I'm raising your hourly income to one silver."

That one sentence made their day. Jack gave them a little more responsibility though. The cashiers had to go to the warehouse now to get the ingredients for the day.

He also changed the contract a little bit so now they couldn't steal from the warehouse as well.

He showed them the location of the warehouse and started the final stage of his plan.

Farming!

Jack Nox is about to get evicted from his apartment. He doesn’t have a job, mainly because he doesn’t want to end up as a dead end office worker, and sets his eyes on a new Vr game, Battle World.

This is the story of a poor boy trying to get some cash. Literally just for the cash. Who cares about relationships?

(This is my first time writing so please be gentle with me. My ego might not be able to handle it!)

Letting out a long sigh, I reclined my tired body on the backside of my chair. Both of my hands, which I've been furiously typing with non-stop for the last eight hours, fell powerlessly at the sides of my body.

"I finally did it." In front of me, the screen of my laptop showed the fruit of very long hours of labor.

"I'll punch in the face whoever said being a novel author was an easy job."

Of course, this could also be due to the fact that I waited until the very last day before the deadline given by the editorial to finish the last few volumes of my work. 

Procrastination can be as bad as it is delicious. 

Even so, I felt a certain sense of pride at being able to finish my manuscript in such a short amount of time. Though I got the feeling my editor would fervently disagree with me in that regard, and then surely chastise me with that unnerving gaze of hers. 

"That old hag can be a true slave driver sometimes. She really should try and get laid…"

A chilling sensation went down my back when that thought crossed through my head. I clearly remember that time when I got drunk at home and, through the phone, had the 'courage', though now I think the term 'utter stupidity' would be more fitting, of remind her of her status as a single woman in her forties. 

She came all the way from across the city to my apartment just to beat me up. Her livid countenance as she used that leather purse of hers to beat the crap out of me still haunts my nightmares.
Up till today, I still feel phantom pains when someone says the phrase "women are like wine, the older the better." 

Bitter, I say.

I shook my head to stop that useless line of thinking. I don't gain anything by musing about other people's relationship status.

Standing up from where I was sitting, I did some stretches to drive the soreness of my muscles away. Popping sounds could be heard from all over my body as I did some light gymnastics. Sitting during 8 hours straight can put some real knots in your back. 

After my little bout of exercise, I gave a last cursory glance at the last chapter of my novel before closing up my laptop. Five years ago, if someone said to me that I would be writing web novels in order to have something to eat, I would dismiss them as delusional bastards. But after living by myself for the last three years, I came to understand that the world can be a really harsh place.

Sighing again, I turned from my desk to face the familiar sight of my bedroom. It was a small room with an area of only a few meters square.

There was a single bed with neatly tided white sheets. A nightstand could be seen at the bedside, sporting a little lamp, curiously shaped like a fungus from a certain game of plumber brothers [1]. The faint light of the lamp illuminated the rest of the room, which although was a bit empty, it emanated an aura of cleanliness. 

One would imagine the room of a young man in his twenties to be a messy junkyard, filled with empty cans of instant food and all sorts of crap. But the truth is that I never could stand filthy places, so I always make an extra effort to maintain my place clean.

All in all, my room was completely average, as is the rest of my apartment. But that's good enough already, considering how dilapidated is the building at which my apartment is located. The landlord usually compliments me for 'taking proper care' of my abode, but I know that the old bastard is only concerned for the state of his property. 

I walked sluggishly towards my bed, and dropped on top of it like my soul just left my body. I let myself be embraced by the warmth sensation of the blankets while looking at the ceiling of my room before my mind continued to wander on its own.

Gawain could not explain the plans he had in mind and his considerations to others— even if it was to Rebecca and Heidi, who were the most trustworthy people, he was unable to explain his thoughts clearly. "She… is helping to burn the weeds and shrubs at the southern side of the river," Heidi said. "This is also one of the ways in which she does magical training usually."
Gawain quirked up the corners of his mouth. "Ask her to come as well, the big fireball training can be done at any time."

"It's not the same. I and Robbie still have lot of things to figure out. We need more time, more like I need it" I said walking to the cold storage. 

Tanya came behind me and said thoughtfully, "Are you still angry on Robbie for abandoning you?" 

I turned the heavy handle of the steel door and walked into the chilly room. The room was so cold that my feet and hand seemed to freeze the moment I entered. I started going through the material as I said, 

"Well it is not something you can forget within a month. But that's not the only thing!" 

"I guess your right. Well, it is better if you both take your time and resolve your issues. If kept suppressed, they only come back later to haunt!" Tanya said, wisely as she pulled out a large bag full of butter cubes. 

"Ahhh now Tanya is old enough to advice me" I laughed, running my fingers through the stock.

"Can't be a kid forever!" Tanya replied, sticking her tongue out. She started pouring the butter cubes in a clay bowl saying, "But I can't help feeling sorry for Fred!"

That was a sensitive subject. I really didn't wanna touch upon it. I have always felt very sorry towards Fred for not being able to return his feelings. I can only hope he will move forward. He is still young, he shouldn't waste his time chasing me. 

"I wonder why you never felt anything for him. Such sincerity is hard to come by!" Tanya said as she picked up the clay bowl and walked out

She isn't the only one who have thought about it. I have wondered the same thing too. But I can only conclude that maybe, we were just not meant to be. 

During the lunch break, I sat in my office feeling exhausted. Running from Garnish to Timepass and to Hot N Sour completely drains my energy. Who said that higher posts are easy jobs. It has such a mental pressure and you are responsible for every mistake your subordinate makes. 

I stretched my hands and shoulder before starting to search the net for some information on tutoring services around my area. Twen's exams were round the corner. He isn't particularly bad at his studies but recently he had been facing trouble with maths and history. I don't know why a second grader's study pressure would be this high, but recently the difficulty level of subjects are increasing and he is finding it hard to cope. Since, am not at home to help him out, so I thought I could get him some tutoring to help. Hopefully it doesn't adds to his pressure. 

I was midway in search when my cell phone rang. I didn't see the Caller ID and picked up straight off. 

"Yes" I said, ticking off two services which were pretty budgeted and have good reviews. 

"Busy?" came Robbie's deep smooth voice

I stopped searching and held my phone properly, "Not really. I just wanted to put Twen for tutoring, so I was looking for some tutoring services"

"Why?" Robbie asked, concerned, "Are his grades falling?" 

"No, but the difficulty level is increasing. I am worried that he might not be able to cope with it" I said leaning back on my chair

"Wouldn't that be an extra pressure? School and then tutors? He is only a second grader. Relax!" Robbie said, chuckling softly

"I don't want him to slack in his studies. Anyways, how did your meeting go?" I asked, changing the subject.

"We just finished. In the evening dinner meet, we will have our planning board introduce themselves and discuss the future plans on this merger" Robbie said, sighing in a slight relief, "I just can't wait it to finish"

I spoke a little sternly, "Don't slack on your duty. Just one more evening and your jobs done" 

"Nah not slacking. Just it is tiring to keep a smile plastered on your face" Robbie said, exhaustedly

I chuckled and was about to say something when I heard a woman's voice saying, "Mr. Walker, Mr. Mandes is waiting for you to sign the contract"  followed by Robbie's voice, "Tell them I'll be there in a minute, Jane" 

"Lets talk at night. You are busy" I said, the moment I heard the girl's voice say "Yes"

"Yeah" Robbie agreed but then said in a flirty voice, "Hey, give me kiss for success" 

I rolled my eyes, looked at the cellphone and forwarded a kissing emoji message and said,

"Sent! Wish you luck!" 

There was a short pause and then Robbie's falsely agitated voice came, "Hey that's cheating!" 

"Bye. Good luck!" And I hung the phone. 

Unintentionally, my lips upturned into a smile. He has changed a lot but this kiddish side of his didn't go. It somehow makes me nostalgic. I looked at the computer screen and saw that it was nearly the end of my lunch and I wrapped up my search.

I walked to the parking area, pulling out my car keys. It was a relief that my work ended. Ever since the winters hit, the traffic in the resort had been maddening. (You really have your own fleet and colonized planet…) but the overlord knew that he couldn’t say this. Because, once he said it, these subjects who thought of themselves as ‘players’, would definitely not be as terrifyingly hardworking as now!!


In the good old days, Arsene Clemente didn't hunt demons for a living. He had a proper nine-to-five gig right in the heart of Ortigas, and friends that can be considered relatively normal. He also used to be very poor, something that was true not only on a financial standpoint but on an equally sad emotional scale. Connections just weren't his thing. His aversion to commitment showed in his anemic following and the trail of jobs he'd slaughtered over the years.

But it all changed one fateful night, when he was approached by this woman from cyberpunk Westeros. As Arsene left the office, she stepped out of a limo parked next to his beat-up moped, juxtaposing not only its aesthetics, but the technological gap of three decades at bare minimum. The strawberry-blonde was a petite five-flatter, a detriment she nullified with disarming looks, air of prominence, and crowning posture of royalty. She also wore a dress that's worth twice of everything Arsene owned, and lugged around requisite beefcake bodyguards, who probably wrestled Tamaraws to entertain her.     

"Mr. Clemente, do you have a minute?" the woman said in an almost local accent. Think Gal Gadot if Wonder Woman took nineteen years to make—in a purely Southeast Asian setting.

Arsene looked at the two suited brutes that now flanked him. "Do I have a choice?" he asked with shaky bravado. He tried desperately not to piss his pants, especially when the chauffer, who looked like he shat infinity stones, came out to join them.  

"I promise that we mean you no harm—quite the contrary actually. Coffee?" She pointed to a café across the street. The place was teeming with customers—of living, breathing, insurance policies. The gesture at least hinted, "We are not the mafia, we're really just here to talk." Stranger danger was still in full effect though.  

So Arsene concurred. It sure beat the alternative of getting manhandled into a seemingly bulletproof, heavily tinted vehicle. The woman then ordered her security detail to stay put, while the two of them sauntered off to the slightly safer company of caffeine enthusiasts and burned out call center agents. 

The woman introduced herself as Clarinae Monikha Fray over cups of the promised coffee. She confided having hailed from Israel, and that she was chosen for the engagement because of her parentage. Her mother was full-blooded Filipina, meaning she spent a great portion of her life in the orient. Under bettered lighting, Arsene not only affirmed this through her mixed features, he also found out that she was definitely-maybe his type. Picture almond-shaped, starry eyes cropped out of the smoothest, milk tea complexion. Then add a mildly contoured nose that ended up in a pair of  bubblegum lips. Now imagine the majority of local girls trying too hard to rub their morena features off, while the rest charred theirs with some harsh toner brand called pollution. Finally, try not to drool on your cappuccino like Arsene did with his. 

"Have you ever wondered why you don't have a middle name?" Clarinae segued. 

Arsene broke his reverie no less than three seconds later. "Come again?" he asked her back. 

"Do you know what your middle name is?" She rephrased. 

Arsene found himself reopening an age-old case file. The mystery of his non-existent title has been unfulfilled since forever. It proved even more problematic when he got into studying, where the faculty grew a habit of pestering him for it every year. Both his parents always found clever ways to distract whenever he brought it up, leading him to this painstaking ultimatum. He was taught never to keep a girl waiting, yet all he managed to do about it was grimace at the notion of his upbringing. 

"It's okay," Clarinae assured him after a while. "It was your mother's choice to strip down the name—she wanted nothing to do with the family legacy."

"It must be quite the legacy," Arsene mused. "My mother is very emotional woman—it must have been difficult to cut ties like that." In hindsight, he didn't know anyone from his mother's side of the family, save for a trio of uncles who visited without fail during the Yuletide season. He didn't even know if his grandparents were still alive.

"Well, do you want to know?"

"Know what?"

"Your middle name." 

"Okay…"

"It's Solomon," revealed Clarinae with such gusto, her noble bearing dislodged for a few moments. She waited for a matching reaction that never came, leading her to a sigh that would break the hearts of men. 

"I'm sorry but I don't get it," Arsene told her. "It's not your fault or anything… I'm just not good with names. Is that name supposed to mean something, by the way?"    
  
The glee in her eyes flared back almost instantly. "Seeing as how you're this clueless, it's going to take an overly long explanation. But long story short, the Solomon clan is one of the richest, most ancient lines in Israel, and before its patriarch died three months ago, he left the bulk of his estate to the most legitimate of his heirs." Clarinae dug her bag as she spoke, producing a manuscript the size of a J.K. Rowling afterthought. She placed it over the table, where it thudded loudly from weight alone. 

Arsene maybe slow, but he was far from stupid. He had a good guess on what followed, but just had to confirm it, lest he embarrassed himself further. "That heir being me?" he mouthed as he examined the paperwork. There was this cryptic insignia cresting its front page. He didn't quite make sense of it, though he recognized the Star of David that made up most of the design. Then came the rest, peppered around it like toppings to uncooked dough: glyphs and odd letterings, altogether imagery evoking vague yet well-known suggestions about the Freemasons, Templars, and even the notorious Illuminati. "Is that the will for the inheritance?" he added.

"Quite," Clarinae indulged him. "It's also a contract, however…"

Mention of a contract caused Arsene to pipe down a bit. Contracts meant fine print inclusions and reading between lines, something a sane person wouldn't want mixed up with Masonic symbolisms. It seemed only right to raise another question. "Why would an inheritance require a contract?"

"Because a thirty-three billion dollar estate is all kinds of complicated, Mr. Clemente," She smiled victoriously. "We have to run some screening trials to ensure that you're the stipulated heir, trials that require your express permission—among other things." 

The staggering amount in question cost Arsene the rest of his coffee, which he spilled even though he wasn't currently sipping on it. Apparently, he trembled enough to simulate the equivalent of a 4.2 magnitude earthquake native to their table. If Clarinae hadn't already finished hers, they'd be looking at a resulting tsunami of caramel espresso, and more attention a nouveau riche hopeful would ever want. In the following moments, he reclaimed some composure to at least fan him through. He palmed the contract/will and cleared his throat, trying to ignore the sound of billionaire-playboy-protagonist still ringing in his ear. "This is one thicc paperwork… We both know that I can't leaf through it in one sitting, and not especially in a public place like this. But all I really care about is if I'm going to have to sell my soul for this gig. So am I?"

Clarinae scoffed and looked like she fought the urge to roll her eyes. She was almost tempted to call him out for the cliché, but was ultimately sincere when she said, "No, of course not." 

"Do I have to sacrifice someone? Or kill pets, animals—living things? Harvest organs?" Arsene kept at it.

"None of the above."

"Worship something? Join or lead a cult?"

"No and no."

Then Arsene v-turned to the opposite direction, hoping he was fast and furious enough to derail her. "What happens if I fail the trial?"

"Then you go home twenty million dollars richer," she said as if talking about some loose change. "At the end of the day, you are still a Solomon, eligible to a portion of the family's wealth."

"Do I at least get your number?" Arsene was surprised at his own audacity. He figured it better to do the hitting now, when he was still the questionable billionaire. 

In response, Clarinae asked for his phone and smiled as she keyed in her personal line. "Are we good, Mr. Clemente?"

Twenty million is not a bad deal. Some would even argue it a decent asking price for the soul already, which this transaction didn't even broker. That kind of money would set someone like Arsene for life, throwing in some not-so-lofty prospects he had in store. After examining Clarinae's eyes a bit more (and relishing the allowance to note of their beauty), he took the pen attached to the document, flipped past both its old and new testaments, and readied his signature on a blank line footnoting Revelations. "Good enough for me." He smiled right back.

He was done writing his name in caps when Clarinae interrupted him. "There's no haste Mr. Clemente," she said, holding his hand with a mild but firm grip. "We'll return for the contract after three days and three nights. Whether or not you have signed it then, we'll either part ways or personally walk you through the proceedings. Take your time—we insist." 

Maybe she thought it a further display of good faith. Maybe she was simply being professional. But for Arsene, signing up to make Donald Trump your bitch was something you don't sit around thinking over for. Regardless, he took Clarinae's advice and packed the will inside his duffle, making sure none of his other effects threatened its integrity. And this time, he accepted the offered ride to a homeward destination.
