With a start, Jade woke up. She could feel the tiredness beneath her eyes, but Jade was one of those people who could not stay in bed once they were awake. Thus, reluctantly, Jade slid out of the covers and got out of bed.
After slipping into a bathrobe and some slippers, she shuffled into the kitchen to make some toast.
'Bergh… so tired.' Jade rubbed the sleep from her eyes and switched the kettle on to brew some coffee and wake herself up. 'Hehe. It's amusing that I spend all day making fancy coffee, but I'm happy with this cheap instant stuff.
'Honestly, I don't understand why they pay so much for those fancy drinks. I don't even think they're that much nicer.'

The kettle finished boiling, so she was soon sipping on her coffee.
Pop!
Shortly after, the toast popped up, and she was soon nibbling at her toast.
'What time is it… What! 6 AM? Why so early?' She felt tears welling up in her eyes. 'This means I didn't even get five hours' sleep tonight…'
As Jade continued to grumble to herself, she moved out of the small kitchen and into the equally small living room, plonked herself on the sofa, and flicked on the TV. It was a habit of hers to watch the morning news with breakfast.
'Ah, I'm too early. The news doesn't start until 7 AM. Hmm, I wonder what's on until then.'
She sat on the sofa with her knees up against her chest as she munched on the toast and flicked through the channels.
Many of the channels were not even broadcasting at that time, and most of those that were simply showed reruns. Only a few had actual content on, all of which were breakfast shows. Jade flicked between those few channels, looking to see if any had an interesting segment on.
After a minute or so of clicking the remote, a segment did catch her attention. The hosts of the show, a man and a woman, had just finished talking about their horoscopes and were talking about other methods of 'reading the future'.
"I went to a fortune teller once," the male host said. "However, I must say, Holly, I thought it was a loud of garbage. Honestly, who believes this stuff? Horoscopes are fun, and they allow people to reflect on themselves due to the open-endedness. However, fortune telling is simply scamming people of their money."
"I wouldn't be so fast to dismiss the mystic arts, if I were you, Desmond," Holly, the female host, countered. "Recently, I've been researching about reading dreams, and some of the stuff is pretty compelling.
"For instance, one common dream type is a chase dream. If you're being chased, it can mean that a problem that you have tried to put off for some time will soon become a bigger issue. If you're chasing someone or something, then it means that your motivation is high and you're pursuing you ambitions."
"That's quite interesting," Desmond said. "Have you got any more?"
Holly smiled. "Of course. Water dreams are fascinating. They're incredibly broad. For example, boiling water means that you are acting or will act on your emotions too much. Whereas waterfalls stand for new beginnings or a fresh start.
"There are so many interpretations, and there are a lot of dreams that are commonly surprising, for example, dreams related to teeth."

After struggling through her early years, lacking the support of her family and those she once called friends, Jade is finally back on her feet. Not just on her feet. She's a successful, young woman running her own business, a cute cafe just outside the central business district.
But despite handsome, successful businessmen running in and out of her store every day, she still hasn't found the right man.

"Are you surprised?" Terrence smirked. The old Chukan mech designer revelled in airing the dirty laundry of his specialty field! "Much of the galaxy sees neural interfaces as safe, mature devices because trillions of man-hours have been poured into developing and refining them for widespread usage. Yet almost no one knows that most of those hours only broadened our perspectives to how serious neural interfaces can fail!"
Throughout this 'exchange' with Old Man Terrence, Ves had fallen into continuous shock. Almost every neural interface specialist should be aware of all of the pitfalls concerning the technology.
Even Iris Jupiter, who introduced him to this field, must have known as well!
What Ves found egregious was that the MTA's deliberate stance to conceal the actual risks of neural interface technology. By propagandizing that neural interfaces were much more sophisticated than the dangerous, pre-Age of Mechs models, an enormous amount of mech designers and mech pilots readily embraced something that must had led to an immense amount of damage!
In Old Man Terrence's case, the damage the tech had caused must have weighed heavily on his conscience! Now that he was nearing the end of his life, Ves found himself in a strange position of hearing the aging Journeyman's confession.
"Neural interface tech is the devil's tech." Terrence reiterated with a shaky fist. "Every mech designer unknowingly incorporates pieces of tech that slowly and gradually degrade the cognitive functions of the users of their products. Does that sound responsible for you? Are we truly serving mech pilots to the best of our abilities, as the MTA often likes to instill in people of our profession?"
"We swore an oath to serve mech pilots!" Ves retorted.
The old man laughed. "Hahaha! That is true, but the devil is in the details! There are multiple interpretations we can choose from. For one mech designer, it may entail minimizing the repercussions of piloting their mechs as much as possible. For another mech designer, it may entail pushing the limits as far as possible regardless of the consequences! Who decides which interpretation is right?"
Ves could very well imagine that different mech designers would not agree on a common interpretation.
Mech designers such as the Skull Architect would definitely try to push his neural interfaces to an extreme!
Having studied his mech designs extensively, Ves knew very well that the pirate designer cared nothing about mech pilots! Instead, he would seek to exploit every opportunity to raise the performance parameters of his mechs as much as possible!
If the lifespan of the users of his products halved as a consequence, then what did that have to do with the Skull Architect?
Perhaps paradoxically, a mech designer like Gloriana might choose the opposite. As crazy as she seemed, she genuinely seemed to care about the mech pilots of her mechs. As a principle, she would not allow her mechs to be marred by dangerously volatile neural interfaces that posed a clear threat to their mech pilots.
As for Ves? He was still in way too much shock to make up his mind!
He turned his attention back to the conversation. "I take it then that the MTA has already decided on the right interpretation on behalf of every mech designer."
"Correct! One of the main duties the Mech Trade Association has taken up for themselves is to set universal standards for mechs. After an extensive study in the risks associated with neural interfaces, their wise councilors at the top have decided that a certain amount of risk is acceptable!"
"Then wouldn't that make every mech in existence a defective product in a sense?"
The old man laughed again. "Again, there are multiple interpretations! The MTA just chooses to select the most convenient ones to suit their own needs. From my perspective, mechs aren't necessarily defective. Instead, they are all experimental products!"
"That's…"
"Mech designers like you unknowingly sell dangerous mechs to ignorant mech buyers who subsequently assign them to oblivious mech pilots. All of this would have been ethically sound if everyone was aware of the true risks associated with the neural interfaces built into the mechs. Unfortunately, the cold hard reality is that no one except a select group is aware! You can thank the MTA for keeping your conscience clean!"
Until now, Ves silently whispered. Calling it the devil's technology sounded very apt to him now. Every mech designer who made use of the so-called standard neural interface models made available by the MTA unknowingly treated every mech pilot as their experimental test subjects!
He wasn't surprised to hear that the MTA acted in a hypocritical manner. He just wanted to understand their reasoning.
"Mr. Reedan, what does the MTA get out of standardizing higher-specced but unsafer neural interfaces?"
"What do you think the MTA stands for?" Terrence prompted. "The answer is mechs! They worship mechs! They will do anything for mechs! If they have to choose between the wellbeing of people and speeding up the development of mechs, they will choose the latter each time!"
That sounded very extreme even for Ves!
"Unsafer neural interfaces speed up mech development?"
"Of course! While I've mentioned numerous negative consequences of using unsafe neural interfaces, risks are always associated with rewards! Perhaps the single most important factor is that unsafe interfaces are correlated with a higher emergence of expert candidates and expert pilots!"
This was another explosive revelation! If this was true, then Ves could definitely see why the MTA pushed for unsafer standards!
"So it's all about increasing the probability of expert pilots emerging from the masses of oblivious test subjects!"
Old Man Terrence grinned. "I see you understand. The MTA has performed several covert experiments to test whether there is a relationship. They secretly implemented divergent regional standards for neural interfaces across different star sectors. What did they find? Star sectors that made use of safer neural interfaces produced as much as twenty percent less expert pilots compared to star sectors that used highly unsafe neural interfaces!"
Naturally, the MTA conducted this grand experiment without disclosing the risks to the test subjects in question!
"The MTA cares a lot about expert pilots. The more, the better, right?" Ves questioned. He still possessed some doubts. "Why did they decide to set it at the point you mentioned when they could have pushed the limits harder?"
"Other than risk exposure, which would be very bad for the MTA?" Terrence chuckled. "They secretly tried it out in a couple of star sectors. What they found was that while the probability of expert pilots emerging from the ranks definitely increased, their quality deteriorated remarkably. An alarming proportion of them suffered from a host of issues such as suffering from personality disorders, premature aging of their brains or a total loss in interfacing ability. Over a longer period of time, these star sectors fielded less expert pilots than usual because too many of them died or ended up crippled!"
Ves knew that if not for the total decline in the number expert pilots, the MTA would have definitely pushed for more extreme standards!
"How many victims have these 'experiments' produced?"
"Too much to count." The old man shook his head. "While the experimental measures have helped propel many mech pilots to heights they ordinarily couldn't reach, plenty of talented mech pilots who might have been able to advance to ace pilots died or retired far before their time."
This was the real human cost of engaging in experiments. The MTA could have acted according to their own ethical standards and performed their experiments in a transparent and voluntary basis. Yet they instead opted not to disclose the risks, no doubt so they could keep the true nature of neural interfaces a secret while obtaining the most accurate data.
"Where do we sit now, Mr. Reedan?"
"The MTA performed various experiments over several decades in many different star sectors. Their internal research teams subsequently modeled and simulated these gains in order to determine the sweet spot that produces the maximum amount of expert pilots."
"I see." Ves nodded while resuming his petting of Lucky. The cat was getting rather grumpy about the lack of pampering! "So their current standards for neural interfaces is a mathematically-derived result."
"The neural interface standards still fluctuate from generation to generation and from region to region." Old Man Terrence warned. "The truth is that the sweet spots are different for each state and each star sector. Not only that, but the MTA sometimes wants to influence the amount of expert pilots that emerge from a specific region of space. For example, if they think the Komodo Star Sector needs more expert pilots, they might tweak the limits of the next generation of neural interfaces made available specifically for this region."
"So the MTA indirectly influences the rate of expert pilots emerging from star sector to star sector?"
"Yes! Don't think the MTA is completely politically neutral. In some cases, their decisions have accelerated the defeat of one star sector over another simply because the former hadn't been able to produce as many expert pilots!"
"What?! Shouldn't mech designers like you know about this?"
"So what? We are all complicit in this matter." The Chukan smiled ruefully. "While my hands aren't as drenched in blood as that of the MTA, I am still carrying the stains to this day. This is the price that every neural interface specialist has to pay."
A brief silence stretched as Ves processed the latest revelations. Both the MTA and neural interface specialists like Old Man Terrence had become accustomed to running dangerous experiments without disclosing the risks to mech pilots.
To Ves, it seemed like this entire field was rotten to the core! In order to maintain the popularity of neural interface, every neural interface specialist voluntarily turned into devils in order to advance this devil tech!
He suddenly recalled something important about Old Man Terrence.
"According to your record, your specialty is related to the relationship between neural interfaces and genetic aptitude."
"Indeed." The old man nodded. "Like many mech designers, I had a dream. Genetic aptitude plays a central role in how far a mech pilot can go. Those whose aptitudes are graded as D can barely pilot a frontline mech, while those whose aptitudes are graded as A have a much higher probability of becoming expert pilots. Doesn't this sound unfair to you, Mr. Larkinson?"
"Nothing is fair." Ves repeated one of his central beliefs. "Some people are simply better at something than others. Like many people, I used to dream of becoming a mech pilot when I was a kid. Reality gave me a good whack in the head when I became ten."
"This is true. Not everyone is capable of piloting mechs. Even I did not attempt to tackle this problem. My interest lay more in elevating the effective performance of mech pilots with lower-than-average aptitudes. My ultimate goal was to equalize the playing field between low-potential mech pilots and high potential mech pilots!"
That was a very ambitious dream! Ves felt a lot of admiration for Old Man Terrence for choosing to pursue such a far-reaching goal!
"Have you made a lot of progress in solving this problem?"
"Hahaha! No!" The old man laughed at himself. "I would have been in a much better position if I had! I severely underestimated the role genetic aptitude plays in facilitating the man-machine connection! It was a fool's dream for a lowly mech designer from a third-rate state to think they can solve this problem when even the best minds at the MTA failed to develop a solution!"
Ves narrowed his eyes in suspicion. He wasn't fooled by the old man's self-depreciating act. "You should have at least made some gains over your long years of designing mechs, right?"
"To tell you the truth, I have. What's it to you, though? My design philosophy is fundamentally flawed to begin with. I barely moved forward when I already encountered a dead end! Perhaps a more ingenious mech designer might have been able to climb over it, but it's impossible for the likes of you and me! The moment I conceded defeat against the strength of genetic aptitude was the moment I ceased progressing my design philosophy any further!"
Mech designers constantly struggled to make the impossible into a reality! Confidence was vital to their progression.
Giving up on pursuing their overarching ambitions was one of the worst outcomes that could happen to a mech designer!


Humanity has conquered half the galaxy and the Age of Mechs reigns supreme!

Ves Larkinson lacked the genetic aptitude to become a famed mech pilot. Fighting against his fate, he studied mech design in order to express his love for mechs as a builder instead of a soldier.

Before I even got a chance to realize what was currently happening to me, I already had become the object of many questioning gazes by my future coworkers. It did feel strange, to be looked at, as if my entire existence was an insult to them.

But I decided to swallow my pride and still show my best behaviour. It would be unwise to let my emotions run wild without knowing anything about my new job that was forced upon me.  The information that had been given to me, where a bit too unspecific to understand what my job is truly about.

If it was just about telling humans to place their hands above the ball, which was used in my judgement, then the requirements would have been a lot laxer. Do you speak Human and can you tell them what to do? Welcome aboard. 

Instructions like this do not need any qualified personnel. The mysterious karmic ties are another topic, which implications are something I absolutely have no idea about. I understand the principle behind it, but the criteria for the evaluation and what exactly it defines as good or bad are above my expertise at the moment.

Besides leaving a good impression, I did not have the time to think about everything. So far my idea about the afterlife could not have been any more wrong. With neither heaven or hell waiting for me I was unsure exactly what was planned for me.

I was hardly looking forward to being forced to evaluate humans for all eternity. How many lifetimes would it take to judge every human being, that will come in front of me? How many humans do exist and will exist in the future?

The realisation of the absurdity of my new task made me feel even worse. The average human life span is around 80 years and coming close to its end most of them look forward to the sweet salvation known as death.

I did not want to imagine what eternity must feel like. I was not very keen on actually finding out, but just like the moon, it was looming over my head. Facing such an inescapable fate, just means that I will have to make sure to enjoy my work.

Finding a positive even in the deepest pit of despair is something I should do to keep my sanity. Who knows, maybe my job has very nice terms and conditions. A nice salary and sick days on top would be a dream come true.

Although most of my coworkers do not seem to do this out of obligation. They treat this as the highest honour and duty. While I can not agree with their point of view, I hope I do not have to follow their noble behaviour.

How am I even supposed to judge if anyone is good or bad? Evaluating someone based on my limited perspective of what I deem good or bad is too shallow. With the advancement of civilisation and technology, a new set of morals will evolve.

What was most vile and evil act yesterday can turn into a mild nuisance, while something good can become something sinister as well. And do not get me started on religion since heaven truly exists which interpretation was right?

Is everyone already condemned to hell just because of believing and praying to the wrong kind of God? It is truly a headache to figure out how I should act.  Is someone bad just because he does something others perceive to be wrong if he has noble intentions? What about someone who commits a crime because he has no other choice?

Right and wrong are nothing more than 2 different interpretations of an act. It is highly subjective and not something such an important choice should be based on.

I decided to stop this train of thought right there because I still lacked crucial information on what my job really was about. Being objectified and hearing them talking about me behind my back certainly was convincing enough to not feed them any more topics.

After being lead around and introduced to so many different species I did not even know the name of I had finally arrived in front of a small door, with my name on it. Every other door seemed noble and contained a feeling of aloofness and serenity.

Mine was a door made out of wood painted black and that was it. It was obvious that the general opinion about humans was far from stellar but treatment like this was just downright cruel. just why did it have to stick out like a sore thumb with its cheap design and ominous colour?

Looking at the door, made me feel like starting a career as a grim reaper. I just hope that the interior is better than this cheap door. But the faint hope died as fast as it came up, after opening the door, I was greeted by a dust mop and other cleaning utensils.

Where is your common decency, I am the first of my kind why do I have to advise peoples future in a broom closet. Now I know why my so-called office was at the end of this corridor. In the middle of cobwebs and dust was a small table and chairs used in camping.

If that does not say professionalism I do not know.

The Cupbearer and the Baker
1Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt. 2 Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, 3 and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined. 4 The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them.

After they had been in custody for some time, 5 each of the two men—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison—had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.

6 When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected. 7 So he asked Pharaoh's officials who were in custody with him in his master's house, "Why do you look so sad today?"

8 "We both had dreams," they answered, "but there is no one to interpret them."

Then Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams."

9 So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, "In my dream I saw a vine in front of me, 10 and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup and put the cup in his hand."

12 "This is what it means," Joseph said to him. "The three branches are three days. 13 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh's cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer. 14 But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison. 15 I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon."

16 When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to Joseph, "I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets of bread.[a] 17 In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head."

18 "This is what it means," Joseph said. "The three baskets are three days. 19 Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and impale your body on a pole. And the birds will eat away your flesh."

20 Now the third day was Pharaoh's birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials: 21 He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh's hand— 22 but he impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation.

23 The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.

Dreamers, you are allowed to start anywhere as long as it's the same distance away from the start of the maze as your base

Trillian and Samantha are  carefree children, but they lives in a world where the Lords have almost unlimited power. These powers are not a matter of physical supremacy, but a show of mental acuity. Their mental capacity is not natural. They are augmenting their brains capability through the gemstone helm. If you want to increase your mental capabilities simply have the gemstone helm installed and augment whichever faculty you want to increase. But beware if your gemstone is ever used up your will become Glass. Your augmented attribute will drop far below the capabilities of a normal human.

"I'm going to stop you there." Chu Chongjiu's face turned gloomy again as he snorted. "Zhao Tongtian, how much money do you think you can pay for my service? Let me tell you. Today, I'm not doing this as a favor for you. This is partly because the crystal suit is one of the best products in the world that I felt too tempted to resist and partly because Sha Yongming is a junior that I have high hopes for. With this crystal suit of yours, I can teach him a thing or two. This is only your lucky day!"
"Of course! Of course! I didn't know what I was saying! Master Chu, you are too honorable and renowned for the Thunderbolt Exo Society to pay anything. However, just like a new piece of magical equipment, you need a little bit of polishing. Today, I'll offer you a piece of advice, which is that you must understand what really matters in a piece of magical equipment. Try to reflect on it once you are home. It may sound simple, but I've only managed to figure out the logic behind the words after decades of practice!"
"Thank you, Master Chu!" Sha Yongming was so excited that he could barely control himself. His tears were almost flowing down.
"It's alright." Chu Chongjiu looked around casually. "Time to go, fellow Cultivators. There's nothing to see here anymore!"

He was a bit surprised by my question, "Alterea?" He mumbled, "that is something I haven't heard in a long time. It's what we simply refer to as magic nowadays."

Tsk, Seraph, did you trick me again? You said I should call it Alterea.

"Then magic, please explain magic to me."

He twirled the pen around his hands, maybe it was a habit. "From the beginning, or should I skip the basics," he asked.

"Pretend like I'm a person that has never heard of magic before."

"Are you sure that is what you want? I could give you money, protection and more," he was perplexed, "you just want to ask a simple question?"

"Yes, I am certain."

"I understand," he stood up, "follow me. Vera, feel free to join, if you want to."

The maids body stiffened, "are you certain? It would be an honor to have the Duke advise me."

"I don't mind if it's a simple thing like that," he walked towards a door and opened it. The door wasn't the wooden door through which we came in. This time it was a rustic door right behind the desk, in the corner hidden by the shadows.

As soon as he opened it, a bright light illuminated the room, causing me to flinch. The door led to the outside, revealing a garden. The garden was still encased within the house, as there were stone walls on all four sides, but that did not undermine it's beauty— no, they even emphasized it.
The place was large and shady. I never saw a place quite like this. A lot of bushes gave life to many old-fashioned flowers, and unruly trees tried to branch out of this little cage, giving me the feeling of walking into a wonderland.
More than anything, it was the sunshine that would periodically bless the colorful nature, making the whole picturesque scene bind together.

He walked on a stone path and said, "do you like this garden? Only the top branch is allowed to enter this garden. I will make a exception for you. Feel free to enter whenever you see fit."

I naturally followed him, with Vera trailing right behind, "it's not to shabby."

"The fresh air cleanses your mind, perfect for the time you need to relax," he stopped in front of a small field, "and there is a great place to release pent up energy. Take a seat, I will explain to you what exactly magic is."

Vera swiftly placed a blanket on the grass, where she got that from, I have no idea. The maid waited for me to take a seat first, before she sat down as well, in a seiza position.

My grandfather began narrating, "usually a child would only start learning magic at the age of 16, as they wouldn't be able to handle the implications," he paused, "but I believe that you have enough potential for us to start now."

On what basis did he reach such a conclusion? I mean, it was nice that he was so trusting, but I might disappoint him, as I originally was not from a world with magic.

"I will start with an introduction," he then asked, "do you know what a proverb is?"

I tilted my head, unable to understand the meaning behind the question, but answered anyways, "something like 'haste makes waste' or 'fortune favors the bold', something like that?"

"Uh, I never really heard of them, but that's about right," he nodded, "have you ever thought were they come from?"

"Ehm, I guess from a variety of sources. Some may be from poetry, fables or songs, others from people pondering about life and condensing them into bite sized wisdoms."

"Correct, those proverbs are a form of self-reflection. It is what an individual has gained by countless different epiphanies and teachings. And ever so rarely, it is trough their own hardships, that they stumble upon one," he talked, "these proverbs craft the world from the perspective of their makers, and are akin to little promises. They show you the way of living and guide you."

I leaned back and supported myself with my hands, "well, I never thought too deeply about them, so I wouldn't know," I said nonchalantly.

"But you should. These proverbs, they exist to outline ones life and hidden within them are many layers of philosophy. Questions such as, what is life? How do I live it? Where do I go? All these questions that we try to unravel is within a single proverb." 
He then lifted his hand, "you take that proverb, you live with it, let it shape your lifestyle," he talked faster and faster, as if spurred by something, "every step you take is for the sole purpose of uncovering the meaning behind it. You find your own interpretation, write your own analysis and someday, it evolves. It changes."
His hands began glowing a bright yellow, "it no longer is a simple sentence, but a way you live your life. You uncover the meaning and the underlying philosophy behind them," the trees began rustling, and petals fell of the flowers. A strong wind had gathered, disheveling my hair, "and then you realize that you can use magic."

It was like a storm was brewing. Clouds gathered above us, as if the sunshine before was just a mirage. Birds desperately flew away, seeking shelter. Vera grabbed my shoulders, protecting me from the gust, while I clung to her, in fear that she might be blown away.
My grandfather stretched his arm out, pointing towards a green bush and I heard the sky rumble.
An unbelievable sight soon followed. Electric arcs assembled within the gloomy clouds. A blue bolt formed and golden lightning split the clouds apart, striking the bush, which then was set on fire. The bush did not burn away, though. Without adhering to the principles of mass conversion it stayed aflame. Soon after, the surroundings began to change. Flowers began to bloom, the clouds parted and the trees grew another size. Light returned, shining upon the garden, which was now more beautiful than ever. Only then, did the bush extinguish it's flames, turning into nothing more than ash.

"If you take a proverb and learn the meaning behind it, you too will gain an ability. I follow the idea of 'burning but not consuming', which for me meant to fall, but never perish, in the face of adversity. And to take, but never destroy. See my ability, <the burning bush>, as the name suggest upon burning a bush, a miracle will soon follow, every time I activate my magic."

"Wait a moment," I raised my hand to interject, "is that it?"

"Yes, a lightning strike sets bushes aflame. The mircacles are also random, but will always be what benefits me the most."

"Uhh," I was dumbfounded, "that is a peculiar ability."

"Most magic is like that, as they are based on your way of life. A person who believes in living life to their limits, might gain the magic to stretch out time, while a person who believes in virtue gained the magic of blessings. It is mysterious like that."

I crossed my arms and raised an eyebrow, "if that is all it took, why is magic not more widespread?"

"The reason for that is because there cannot be a single doubt in your beliefs. Many people like to think they follow certain rules. But not a lot can truly follow their principles when stuck in a corner. If you ever betray your ideals, you will not be able to wield magic," he sat down, "which is also why most magicians are nobles, because unlike peasants who need to tend their fields and family, we can devote our time in fortifying our mind and ideals."

Alright, I felt like I finally understood what magic entails. I didn't know why magic worked, but I understood the principles behind it.
Although Seraph and my grandfathers explanation had their differences, the core essence was the same.
Magic was based on life. On philosophy. I got it now.
A person who really followed their way of living would soon find magic suitable for them. That is also why Seraph said, it didn't matter if I imitate her, as I did not understand her beliefs, I did not follow her sentiments. 

It was a vey mystifying concept. 

Seraph said, philosophy is searching for the truth. The closer you were to the truth, the better your magic was. Consequently, magic should be based on philosophies. 
But my grandpa did not mention anything like that. Instead he kept speaking about proverbs. 
In essence, proverbs are a form of philosophy too, but the fundamental difference laid in the fact that proverbs take small parts of grand philosophical theories and are made for those not well versed in the topic to understand.

I wonder who was right.

I tried finding out by asking, "why do we take a proverb, can't we just directly follow the philosophy in our minds?"

"Eh, I guess in theory you could, but reality is often unforgiving," he scratched his head, "to find a proverb that suits you is already hard enough. The longer it is, the more you have to remember, thus having even more rules that bound you. And they cannot contradict each other either. A whole philosophy had too many interpretations, too many complexities, to take them all in is ludicrous. Not even a dream within a dream. I urge you to stick with these proverbs which take small aspects out of these giant cobwebs called 'philosophy'."

"Then how would you wield more than one spell?"

"Agnes you really ask hard questions. Wielding more than one spell would make you a genius amongst geniuses. You shouldn't think in that direction. Even if it was you that we are talking about."

Huh, but if I remembered correctly, Seraph could use more than one. She once healed me, and she created Gerald. I'm sure that they were different spells. I'm also sure that two spells weren't her limits.
Really, what was that girl? Or was it that my grandfather was more useless than I thought.

"Agnes, I can already see what you are thinking," Vera suddenly chimed in, "believe it or not, your grandfather is one of the top magicians in this country, just behind the king."

"Vera, stop that. The king possesses far more power than me. He is the greatest magician in our country. You comparing him to me is actually quite embarrassing," he then stared at me, "but Agnes, she is right, you set your ambitions too high. It would be already impressive if you found your magic after a year of learning."

Alright I understood completely. Seraph's crazy. Yep, she's a weirdo.

I continued, "if I may, you are a powerful magician, but what defines that?"

"That's a good question. Unlike what many believe, it's not about how destructive it is. There the are all kinds of aspects, such as how profund your starting proverb is, how deep you developed it, and how well you live it. All these aspects make your magic stronger. They gain more influence, a bigger area, and most importantly alter the world in an unimaginable degree," he then stared into the distance, his eyes glowing, with a ephemeral voice he stated, "it is said, at the end of the road you will even reach immortality."

This time, Vera reacted before me, with a childlike curiosity, she repeated, "immortality?"

That innocent reaction made him laugh out loud, "but don't get your hopes too high," he lifted each finger in his hand, and placed them parallel, with only a distance of about ten centimeters, "if that is the difference between you and me," he then pointed into the sky, "then the sun to us, would be the difference between me and an immortal."

"No way," the maid slumped down and I patted her shoulder, indicating that she should not be discouraged.

"But who knows, it may still be you that will one day cross those boundaries. That is the beauty in magic. It is unfathomable and guides our way of life."

He was right. It was a hard pill to swallow, for a person who had came from another world. 
There were still many questions that I had, but for now I had to settle with the basics. I was certain that even my grandfather could not answer them all.
If I wanted to learn more, I had to ask someone like Seraph, but who knew when I would ever meet her again, if at all.

"Would you like to start learning magic," he suddenly asked.

An Extraordinary Phenomenon
After eight months in his work, Amadeus found it enjoying and interesting the kind of work he was handling in the office. He became a regular employee and got a considerable compensatory benefits from his employer.
However, after a month his Mom suffered a stroke and had to undergo surgery in her brains.  Red being single and could afford to shoulder the expenses had it all.  Their Mom was bed-ridden and after subsequent operations and medications, the medical specialist found no means that she would be able to recover.  She eventually became critically ill.
Red was always in her bedside and vigilant while Nancy and Amadeus frequented the house to monitor the situation of their Mom.  In her resting bed, their Mom kept uttering her concern for Red. " Take care of yourself and find the right woman for you"
After a few days, she died.  It was a day of mourning for the family.  During the wake of their Mom,  many friends and relatives visited to share their condolences with the bereaved family. Sophia and Linda attended the burial rites,  but Nancy and Amadeus remained silent as Red was the one attending them.  Ben shunned away for fear of the incident about Linda but kept hanging around in an isolated area. Finally, their Mom was laid to rest. In their first few succeeding days, the atmosphere in the house was gloomy,  but yet trying to recover from the stress and sorrow.
In the office, Amadeus was still recovering from the grief of his Mom's death as condolences were conveyed to the family.  Eventually, things went back to normal.
However, unusual to his sleeping habits, Amadeus had an extraordinary night dream which he told to Sarah.
" I had a bad dream last night and I don't know if it was really happening in our surroundings or not with my shallow sleep" Amadeus reckoned.
" What did you do? I was not aware when you woke up. " Sarah said.
" It was okay. I got a glass of water.  If I am not mistaken, I could hear a great sound of a beaten gong, a large gong whose echo went through my very ears then, I suddenly opened my eyes.  I was trying to feel the surrounding but, the night was still" He continued.
" What do you think was that for?  I never heard from you such a kind of night dream ever since" Sarah said.
" Yes, dreams come any time to anybody and that's unavoidable. But dreams have interpretations" Amadeus explained.
" Yes, I believe in dreams and their meanings. There must be a message in every dream.  Perhaps, you should rest and relax.  It's your stress in the job that keeps you from dreaming." She added.
" I don't take it badly but,  it is just the first time I ever had that kind of dream.  Anyway, I have to relax and rest since it's my day off. I got too much workload in the past days, that's why." He said.
" Don't be too serious, tomorrow is another day" Sarah urged him.
" Before I rest and forget, I should go to the house to talk to Nancy.  I  heard that Nancy and Van are planning to migrate to England. Did you know that?" he asked.
" No. I just heard it from you." She replied.
" Let me check on that in the house now"
" Do you want us to go with you ?" she asked.
" No. not at all.  I will be back soon"
He fixed himself and proceeded to the old house.  He simply opened the gate and went in.  He went up slowly.
" Dude, what's up ?" Nancy asked.
" Is Van there ?" He asked.
" He went to the market." She replied.
" I heard that you and Van are planning to migrate to England.  Is that true?" He asked." I saw Bro's car down there. Is he there ?"  Amadeus asked.
" Yes, in his room, sleeping," She said.
" Yes. Van had been processing our papers in the embassy for one month now. This is prior to his job relocation in Edinburgh, where the company's  main office is located." She said.
" Are you staying for good there?"
" Indefinite. The job is there "
" Does Bro know about this?"
" Yes. We just talked about it before he adjourned.  He said, he cannot do anything but, to live alone here." She continued.
"  When are you leaving ?"
" Perhaps next week.  We're just waiting for the visa that is supposed to be received this week."
" I will try to check on Bro in his room if we can talk."
He stood up and walked slowly towards the room.  He saw the door half-way opened.  Then, he saw him lying in bed and seemed to be sleeping while holding his forehead.  Amadeus stepped back to the receiving room.
"Why? " Nancy asked. " He looked like he is sleeping but he is holding his forehead.  Why? Is he okay ?" He explained.
" No. Why holding his head. Headache?  Let me check,"
She took a glance on the door and stepped back. " Yes, what's wrong with him?"
" Is there something wrong ? I didn't see him like that before. He is not at rest " She said.
" Ask him later.  I will go for now. Tell me when you are leaving"  He said.
" Okay.  I will try to know what's wrong with Bro. There must be something wrong with him." She added.
Amadeus went home and told Sarah about the incident.  And after a week, Nancy called Amadeus for her departure.  They personally went to the house and sought to know the probable health problem of Red and bid farewell to them.
" He told me, it's nothing.  He was not just feeling well that day, but now he said, he's already well." Nancy said.
" Okay.  By the way, Nancy and Van, good luck to your next home, England." He said
" Take care, Sarah and Bob. I will send you a greeting card and continue getting in touch with you when we get there" Nancy said.
" We will get in touch through email and Skype. " Sarah said.
" Van, don't forget to email me.  There might be some good things there" Amadeus insinuated.
" I will do that Dude. Just wait for my message" Van said.
After a while, Red arrived before they were set to leave.
" I will go with you. Ride with me and I will drive you back home. It's been a long time since my last visit to the house"  Red said.
" That would be better to check your house, Bro," Amadeus said.
" I will check if the trees are bearing fruits now" Red implied.
" Yes, trees are bearing small fruits now," Sarah said.
At the house, Red parked his car in the garage and checked the fruit-bearing trees he planted a long time ago. Red loved to plant trees and a variety of plants in the garden while Sarah and her house helper took care of them.
" Are you feeling well now? I understand you got a headache the other day" He asked.
" No. It was just a mild headache caused by stress." Red replied.
" Are you okay in your job now?" He asked.
" Yes. I am happy with my job now. I believe this is for good now." Amadeus replied.
" Good. Keep it up" Red encouraged.
" How about you?  Nancy is leaving abroad."
" Well, I will live alone in the house" Red said
" Any plans of taking a partner ?" Amadeus continued.
" Perhaps, not at all in my age. I am old enough to nurture a baby.  I am happy with this kind of life. " Red replied.
" There are plenty of young girls around there. I understand one had been groomed  with you?"
" Forget about them.  Young one might fool me in the future. It would only add to my stress when I am old"  Red continued.
" You got a point. But your future with Sophia is uncertain. ?"  Amadeus said
" Forget about her. I know what I am doing" Red said.
Their intimate conversation was distracted when Sarah invited them for lunch.  Since the day Nancy and Van left for England, they did not set foot on the house again while Amadeus was fully occupied in the office as Sarah was also busy in her job. But,  beyond their knowledge, Red was insistent in his relationship with Sarah.
This time Sarah was eager to drive Amadeus and family out of Red's property.
" Do something valid that will drive them out of his house?" Sophia asked Linda.
" I will try to do something different  that may help you drive him gradually out of the house," Linda replied.
