At 15 year old...….

Vick finished his first year in high school, two years remaining to finish his school.
Vick's summer vacation started, starting of summer vacation he spent most of his time with his younger brother Anbu and younger sister Sara. Vick is elder son in the family, he is very protective of younger brother and sister. Vick loves his sibling more than his parents, he always teaches sibling which is correct and wrong. Vick's parents Arjun and Kaviya are very proud of him, always says that Vick's level of maturity is high compared to other boys of the same age. 

After some days due to his interest in the computer, he started learning computer programs and codes. Vick spends most of his time in studying computer codes.

Vick doesn't enjoy going to business meetings, company events or party. Vick mother Kaviya worried about Vick's spending most of his time with computer, and not going out regularly. His mother constantly forcing him to go to the family gathering or company events, which he refused all. 

 In order to avoid his mother arrangements, Vick planned to go to his close friend Vishal home. Vishal is Vick's classmate and his close friend from middle school. Vishal family is well off and also Vishal parents are business partner/friends of Vick's father. Vishal came to Vick's home during his father business trip to the main city. They become friends. 

Vick's mother worried about his safety, so she arranged two bodyguards to travel with Vick's. Vick's don't like to go with a bodyguard to his close friend home. Vick protested about this to his mother, his mother informed about this to his father and asked Vick to deal with his father. Vick's father called to Vishal father and asked him to take care of his safety. After returning from work Vick father informed to Vick that he doesn't need to go with the bodyguard. He is very happy and his personal maid packed things required for his travel.

Next day early morning Vick started his journey to Vishal home. Vishal home is in City A which is two-hour travel from the main city. City A people main income is from agriculture, so it is surrounded by agricultural fields. And City A has entertainment places like movie halls, game center, computer centers. Vick is happy with his friend caring family and the city with combined city life and countryside life. Vick spends day time in exploring the City A and visiting tourist places near City A and at evening he spends most of his time at the computer center.

Vick spends more than 15 days in Vishal home. On 16th day morning Vick's phone starting ringing, Vick is still in sleep without opening his eye, he started searching for his phone in the table near his bed. 

Vick answered the phone call without looking caller ID. 
Vick: Hello?
Sara: Bro, did you wake up?
Vick: Why are disturbing my morning sleep?
Sara: (Laughing) It seems like you are enjoying your summer vacation.
Vick: Yeah…. It's very good here, so what's up.
Sara: Okay your fun time is over. Return back to home.
Vick: Why? 
Sara: Father asked you to return to home by today evening. Tomorrow he wants to speak with you. He said it's important.
Vick: Okay. I got it. I will return in the evening.
Sara: Mmm…. Take care, come back safe….

Vick cut the call and finished his morning duties. Vick informed to Vishal and his parent about going back home. Vishal parent asked him to have lunch together in the Nila restaurant. Vishal parent likes to go to Nila restaurant once a week, before leaving they want Vick to have some good lunch together.

During lunch, Vishal parent asked Vick to visit regularly and they discussed many topics. After lunch, Vishal and his parent left the room first. Vick went to the restroom before leaving, after coming out of restroom he saw a girl entering the staff room. He was mesmerized by her beauty, he is still staring at the door which she left. After ten minutes Vishal came back to check his friend, Vick standing near the room just staring at the closed door. Vishal came near Vick asked what happened. Vick said 'it's nothing let's leave'.

Vick said goodbye to Vishal and his parents and left to the main city. He reached home by late night, because of heavy lunch he didn't feel like having dinner. He just drinks some milk and went to bed.
Next day morning, Vick personal maid informed Vick about his meeting with his father.
At 9 o clock, Vick left his room to meet his father at a small office at home.

Arjun secretary informed Vick father through the intercom, 'Young Master is here'. His father replied 'let him come in'.
After entering the room, his father asked him to sit. 
Vick father Arjun asked you know about our family tradition right?
Vick: Yes
Vick father Arjun: Okay, Next month you must leave home. I have a few things to inform you, listen carefully.
1. You can select any city where you want to go to.
2. You must complete the school and college.
3. You can select any major in college.
4. You can return home after you excel in your own business in any field you choose. I will give an initial investment of ten thousand dollars after you finish school.
5. Two bodyguards are compulsory. I will select one person from Team 1 and you can select one person from Team 2. 
6. One local person from the city you choose, Our family have people in all city in our country. He will help you settle down and also he will help you with day to day life.

"Stacy, can you get me some more litter? We have a situation here!" I hollered. 
I would've done it myself but I was too busy cleaning up cat diarrhea that had somehow missed the box. Disgusting. I saw the guilty party meowing miserably, head pressed against the floor.
My savior stood in the doorway and wrinkled her nose at the smell. "Here. I'll go get the vet tech to take a look at poor Mr. Whiskers before things get worse." 
She set down the canister of litter and speed walked away with a hand over her nose. By the time the vet tech arrived, I had finally completed my scrubbing and disinfected the offending patch of floor. 
"I heard we have a bad case of diarrhea," he said. "Who's the unlucky kitty?"
I pointed at the black and white cat still meowing painfully on the floor. "We call him Mr. Whiskers because they're so curly."
"I hope it's not something super contagious." The tech gnawed his lip in worry. "I don't want to have to quarantine this whole room."
"Possibly more than this room," Stacy contributed miserably. "I…forgot to wash my hands between delivering food trays this morning."
The vet tech pinched the bridge of his nose as if warding off a headache. "It happens. Let's hope for the best though. Come on Mr. Whiskers," he wheedled. "Into the carrier." The poor cat was so sick its only protest was a croaky meow. 
The tech shut the gate and looked pointedly at Stacy and me. "Don't let anyone else into this room and go home and wash up so if there is something else it won't spread."
I saluted. "Aye aye, captain."
The tech rolled his eyes at me before walking away. Stacy turned to me with tears in her chocolate-brown eyes. "Do you think he's really mad at me?"
"I think he's just a grouch," I said honestly. "The whole time I've volunteered here he's always been the first to assign blame where it doesn't belong."
She sniffed and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. "Thanks, Lori. I just really can't afford to get in trouble here. I need the volunteer hours for college applications."
I put a hand on the dark-skinned girl's shoulder. "I understand. I doubt he'll put up a fuss, but if he does I'll vouch for you. Of all the volunteers, only two have been here longer than I have. They'll listen to me."
Wonder shone in her eyes. "You'd do that for me?"
"Of course! Girls have to watch each other's backs," I said firmly. 
Stacy was bright, if a little overeager, and a mistake as simple as not washing her hands shouldn't prevent her from getting into a good college. 
"When are your applications due?"
She looked down, embarrassed. "I'm actually a sophomore. I still have a year before I can even start applying but I want to make sure my resume is well-rounded. I mean, I play volleyball, sing in choir, and speak fluent Spanish but I'm aiming for Ivy League. You need tons of volunteer hours for that."
Ambitious. I was impressed. "Where do you want to go?"
"Brown," Stacy said, her voice gaining enthusiasm. "My dad was a guest professor there once when I was a kid and he couldn't stop talking about how amazing it was. He's taking me on a campus tour this summer and I can't wait!" 
The girl was a go-getter. Like Cindy. Both of them would do anything to reach their goals. 
"That's awesome, Stacy! I'm sure you'll get plenty of volunteer hours. Ivy League schools typically look for a variety of volunteer programs though. Tell you what, I can get you a spot volunteering at a women's shelter my job coordinates with. You can alternate getting your hours here and there. That would look really good on your resume."
"That would be so cool! Are you sure?"
I waved a hand dismissively. "We're always looking for more volunteers. You'll have to go through an extensive training process but you can count that towards your hours."
Tears of gratitude sparked in the corners of her eyes. "Thank you so much, Lori! You're the best!" 
She surprised me by throwing her arms around me. I returned the hug, thinking how happy she was by such a small gesture. It was gratifying. 
Abused and neglected kids may have been my primary focus, but I was always happy to help any kid in need. Even for something as small as college applications.
A honk sounded outside and Stacy pulled back. "That's my mom. See you next week!"
I waved goodbye and grabbed my purse off its hook in the employee's lounge. The shelter lot had been unusually full when I arrived so I had to walk across the street to reach my car. 
A van screeched around the corner illegally, sirens wailing not too far in the distance. I did a back handspring to get out of the way, heart pounding so fast the world around me blurred. Cop cars whooshed by, tailing the van that could have turned me into a pancake. 
Gripping my keys so hard it left dents in my hand, I unlocked my car and climbed in. I was so shaky from my near death experience that my reflexes weren't as sharp as usual. 
Pulling out from the side of the road, a second van was coming right at me. I barely had time to yank the steering wheel to the right and step on the gas before everything went black.

Dai Li felt like an exploitative capitalist. Faced with employees asking for a raise, he he rejected their request resolutely, with no room for compromise. He wouldn't pay even an extra cent.

"I have heard about it a little. I remember a few years ago, General Motors declared bankruptcy because the United Automobile Workers union demanded too much. In the end, General Motors couldn't compete anymore. They were the largest manufacturer to declare bankruptcy in American history," Dai Li said.
"In actuality, most of the automobile workers did not have to worry about their livelihood; they were all skilled workers. Even if the three big giants, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler became bankrupt, these automobile workers could go to Japanese manufacturers like Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. The automobile manufacturing plants opened by the Japanese in America don't care about unions such as the United Automobile Workers, so if they went to work at a Japanese plant, their benefits would be much lower."
Blake noticed that the traffic light far away had already turned red, so he slowed the car down before continuing, "Most skilled professionals are the same; they won't really become jobless. If they have the skills, they will always be able to earn a living. The only difference is whether or not their quality of life will go down. Just like those coaches that left our center, and those that are about to leave, they are all actually just hoping for a better life."
"I understand what you mean. Job hopping for money is not something to be ashamed of, and if your salary goes up every time you jump ship, it actually shows the value you possess. It shows that your abilities are getting stronger and stronger." Dai Li spread his hands and said, "But if someone is earning a salary that is disproportionate to their abilities, that may not be a good thing."
"Yeah. Those coaches think that they should have a better salary, so they jumped ship," Blake answered casually.
Dai Li shook his head, "You misunderstand. What I mean to say is, the salary that I am giving them right now reflects their current abilities. With their current abilities, they are not suitable for a higher salary, so they shouldn't have requested a raise. At least not now. Those training centers that gave them a high salary made a deal that will lose them money."
Blake was shocked by Dai Li's words. "I thought you were just trying to make yourself feel better because you couldn't get those coaches to stay! You're actually saying that the ones that got poached away were all newbies?"
"Of course. Do you think their coaching abilities are high?" Dai Li asked.
"In comparison to you, they are indeed pretty weak; actually, it's not even comparable. But compared to the average coach, they are not bad! At least to me, their salary is matched by their work performance; I would even go so far as to say that they are a good value. Which is why Ironman Training Center is willing to spend so much money on poaching them," Blake said.
"It would be the same with anyone else hired to fill their positions. If you place the new employees you hire with me and let me train them properly, they will also become outstanding coaches," Dai Li said very confidently.
Blake gave Dai Li a look. He didn't know where Dai Li's confidence was coming from.

Thus, a large number of young people to would be attracted to sign up for the recruitment of beach lifeguards. Only the best of the best could work in that popular occupation. The acceptance rate for beach lifeguards in America was comparable to the acceptance rate of civil servants in China. Just by looking at the popularity of training programs for civil servants in China, one could imagine the popularity of training programs for beach lifeguards in America.
As a beach lifeguard, besides knowing the techniques for saving lives, one also needed to be good in the water and have good physical fitness. Many physical fitness training centers opened courses to help clients develop those skills, allowing them to smoothly pass the beach lifeguard exam.
Dai Li started his career with training courses, so of course, he knew that these kinds of short-term courses were profitable. In the past, Dai Li started a two months summer course that was able to earn him a year's worth of salary. So, the beach lifeguard training course was a profitable venture to any fitness training center.
However, these sorts of short-term courses depended a lot on word-of-mouth. It wasn't only true in China, but in other countries as well. If none of the students from a group who trained in a particular year passed the test, then the center's reputation would be ruined. As a result, no one would sign up the following year. In contrast, if the passing rate was high, then when the course opened the following year, students would come rushing in.
For the students who took part in the training course, the important thing wasn't the price, but the quality of the training. It was like in the retake class for the National Higher Education Entrance Examination in China; if the class could produce a Number One Scholar of the College Entrance Examination every year, even if the price was high, there would be no need to worry about student recruitment. On the contrary, many would even try to secure a place in the class through connections.
When Dai Li thought about the characteristics of training courses, he massaged his temples before saying, "Conducting training courses is my old trade, I'll personally handle this year's beach lifeguard training course. I want to have a passing rate of a hundred percent!"

Gun-Ho took the HSK test and passed level-4.
He was disappointed about the fact that he couldn't reach the level-5's passing score since he studied so hard. However, he knew that he could try again next time so it was okay. When he had failed the level-9 government job exam in Korea, he felt devastated. He didn't feel that way anymore.
"I used to feel like a loser whenever I had failed the government job exam because at the time having a government job was the only way to handle my situation; I didn't know any other way out. I was so scared of being left out, and not knowing what to do to overcome my financial difficulties. Damn Korea's level-9 government job exam!"
 
Eun-Hwa was not sure whether she should congratulate him or comfort him when she heard that Gun-Ho passed the HSK level-4, instead of level-5.
"G-jjong, you did a good job in passing the level-4. It was your first time trying the exam."
"I actually thought I might pass the level-5, but I missed a lot of questions in the listening comprehension section"
"I heard people who passed the level-5 are the ones who majored in the Chinese language in a 4-year college. You made it to level-4 in just a short period of time, and level-4 is not a low level at all. The admission requirement for most universities in China for international students is HSK level-4."
"Oh, really?"
An idea flashed across Gun-Ho's mind when he heard the college admission requirement for international students was HSK level-4.
"Right. That's it!"
"What's on your mind?"
"Let's transfer to a college in China. There is Zhejiang University close to the condo I acquired. I heard Zhejiang University is one of the best universities in China!"
Gun-Ho decided to explore quietly more about transferring to Zhejiang University.
Gun-Ho felt sorry to Eun-Hwa who tried hard in preparing Gun-Ho for the HSK exam.
In appreciating her effort, Gun-Ho took an envelope from the inner pocket of his jacket and put 300 Yuan without showing it to anyone and then handed it to Eun-Hwa.
"Ms. Eun-Hwa Jo, I appreciate your efforts in preparing me for the HSK exam, and I want you to take this. I was only able to pass level-4 because I had a good teacher like you."
"Wow. Is this for me?"
Eun-Hwa took the envelope from Gun-Ho; she seemed to have felt shy but delighted.
 
Korean international students sometimes came to Gun-Ho's Korean restaurant. They couldn't come very often because the food's price there was not cheap. However, they came when they were tired of having Chinese food every single day and missed Korean food. A few Korean students came to the restaurant on a Saturday.
"How're your studies? It's not easy to study while being away from your home, right?"
"Yeah…"
"Try this. It's a Korean pancake."
"Is it complimentary?"
"Don't worry. It's free."
The Korean students ordered a few bottles of beer. When they almost ran out of beer, Gun-Ho brought one more bottle of beer to their table."
"What is this? We didn't order it."
"This is on me. You are like my younger brothers. Enjoy the beer, on the house."
"Wow, thank you, sir!"
"Oh, umm, can I ask you something? Do you know anything about transferring to Zhejiang University?"
"A new semester starts in September, so I guess they are accepting applications right now. I heard that a transfer admission is less competitive than admission directly from high school."
"Do they accept HSK level-4?"
"I believe so. A student with HSK level-4 might face difficulties understanding the lectures in the university, but I believe they can be admitted."
"What about a cyber college. Do they accept a cyber college diploma for transfer students?"
"I don't know. I guess as long as it is a bachelor's degree, they will accept it. Why don't you ask the admission office?"

Gun-Ho visited the admission office of Zhejiang University and asked about the transfer process with his not so fluent Chinese.
"You need to submit a copy of your passport, HSK test result, college diploma, college transcript, and a financial document showing how you receive your tuition and living expenses, etc."
"Do you accept a college diploma from a cyber college?"
"A cyber college? Like Dienseutta? (a college with TV lectures) As long as you can provide a college diploma, that's fine."
"What kind of majors are there in the business department?"
The staff in the admission office showed Gun-Ho their brochure about programs the university provided.
"Hmm… I guess I should choose the accounting major. I've obtained the computerized accounting level-2 certificate in addition to my work experience in the field. I think I can understand better the accounting lectures with my background. Moreover, since accounting majors use more numbers and fewer writings compared to other majors, that could work as an advantage for me."
Gun-Ho knew he should make a quick trip to Korea soon to prepare all these required documents.
 
Gun-Ho went to Korea for the documents required to transfer to Zhejiang University.
Gun-Ho's mother was happy and surprised when Gun-Ho arrived home unexpectedly.
"I knew you told me you would come soon, but I didn't expect you so soon."
"I need to prepare some documents for college as soon as possible."
"A college? What college?"
"I am going to transfer to a college in China this coming semester."
"Transfering to a college? I thought you went to China to work."
"I work there. I am running a Korean restaurant. I can do both studying and working."
"Are you taking night classes? What about the tuition?"
"Mom, stop asking all these questions. I'm handling the situation. I am starving mom. Can I have your Doenjang-jjigae? I love your Doenjang-jjigae. Oh, and this is for you. I bought it at the duty-free shop at the airport. I want you to look younger using this cream."
"Wow! This is made in another country. It should be expensive!"
"I bought one more for sister. Please give it to her when she visits you. And this is for dad. It's a fancy Chinese liquor, called Maotai."
"Oh my gosh! These are all way too expensive."
"This is a chocolate for Jeong-Ah."
Jeong-Ah was Gun-Ho's niece, his sister's daughter. She was going to kindergarten.
"Wow. This chocolate is huge. You didn't forget about your niece when preparing all these."
Gun-Ho's mother seemed to be happy, and the sound of cooking from the kitchen became vigorous.
 
Gun-Ho transferred to Zhejiang University at the age of 33 as a third year in the accounting major. He seemed to be the oldest student in the university, and he didn't have a chance to spend time with other Korean students. He didn't have time for it either because he had a restaurant he had to run.
"Big brother, we are going to have a gathering for Korean students. Will you join and support us?"
Sometimes the Korean students came to Gun-Ho to ask for something. Some students had a lot of nerve to call him big brother instead of sir.
"I'm afraid that I won't be able to attend. I am a student here but I also have to work. Instead, I will get you three boxes of beer for the gathering!"
"Whoa, you are the best, big bro!"
 
Gun-Ho ran the restaurant and also went to college.
"It has been one and a half year already since I came to China. I've purchased two condos a year ago, and I have been studying in college for eight months now. I am not sure if I am doing good. I hope I am not missing anything."
Gun-Ho received a call from the branch manager of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.
"It has been a while since we last met, Mr. Gun-Ho Goo. The spring had passed and it's almost summer. Do you know how to play bowling?"
"Bowling? I am not good at it but I do love watching others playing it. Haha."
The last time Gun-Ho visited Korea, he purchased Korean cosmetics for the branch manager. He loved it.
'I don't know how to play bowling, but I had to tell him that I love to watch others playing it, so he could invite me for bowling. Who knows? Maybe he has some valuable information for me.'
Gun-Ho thought.
 
When Gun-Ho said he loved to watch others playing bowling, the branch manager continued talking about bowling,
"We are not very good at playing bowling either. Let's meet at the bowling alley in Wonalu. How about 3 PM tomorrow?"
Gun-Ho didn't have class tomorrow. The restaurant was being handled by Dingming and Mae-Hyang. Since Eun-Hwa, Gun-Ho's private tutor hadn't found any job yet she would probably have time tomorrow. Gun-Ho thought that he should better ask Eun-Hwa to go bowling with him.
"Sounds good!"

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) was created for the efficient and effective law enforcement of all the provisions on dangerous drugs or its precursors and essential chemicals. It is the implementing arm of the Dangerous Drug Board (DDB), the policy-making and strategy-formulating body in the planning and formulation of policies and programs on drug prevention and control.
The Director-General, who was currently heading PDEA that year, was based in Cebu. Dino, his best friend's son whom he took into his home after he graduated in high school, had now passed his training as a police officer. Under his influence, he had him assigned as a challenge, in a special task force, the Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operation Task Force (PNP-AIDSOTF).
The district of Kamelyo was already long reported as a drug den. There were already several attempts to trace down the powerful men behind these illegal trading, but all ended out as futile due to the strong protection from higher sources.
 Dino and his team got appointed to this great challenge of ending and clearing out the long-time illegal business in this place.
Inwardly, he was happy with the appointment. He had someone to help him discreetly in tracing down these trash of the society, which had already destroyed many homes and lives of those willing victims like the users, pushers, and the mules.
Allie became his best friend during his last year in high school since a teacher, who happened to be Allie's coach in writing, adopted him. She was not just Dino's teacher but was also his aunt. He came to live with her when his mother died in a vehicular accident when he was young.
He met Allie when she was still a freshman. Since she spent most of her weekends in their house for coaching, they became close to each other and became good friends.
After his graduation, his aunt became sick and eventually died. Her best friend, who was now the PDEA's Director-General, took him to his home. They sent him to college, and as a tribute to his kindness, he took up a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.
Having known ahead of the wickedness of the district of Kamelyo through Allie, he rejoiced secretly. Her place was in the borders of Kamelyo, the direct route by the shoreline towards the factories that employ the people there.
During summer vacations, Allie regularly worked in one of these factories. Brilliant students like got privileges of special assignments as the company's program to help those aspiring students to have financial means during school days.
And because some workers were mostly Ate Elsa's relatives and some were her acquaintances through them, she knew the dark secrets behind the production of these companies. Her knowledge about these evil transactions in the whole district of Kamelyo was the bright hope of Dino to get a rank promotion. Most of all, to make his uncle, Director-General Alfonso, proud and happy for him.

Meanwhile, Leo and Ajie were shivering in fear as they sat down before the desk of an interrogation officer.
"Do you know that the total weight of these drug packets inside this bag is 80 grams?" The officer fixed his gaze firmly on the frightened looks of the father and son.
They both shook their heads vigorously. Anyone could tell through their expressions that they were innocent. Leo's face had already turned red. He wanted to cry, but he did not want to frighten his son more. He regretted the day he decided to send him here.
It was not enough. The next statement of the officer scared them to death.
"Do you know that the law stated it that a penalty of life imprisonment to death and a fine ranging from P500,000 to P10 million should be imposed upon any person, who, unless authorized by law, will be found possessing 50 grams or more of methamphetamines hydrochloride or shabu? "
Ajie almost fainted when he heard this. He was here to find success and build a good future and not to rot his dreams inside a prison cell. Leo could not hold his urge to cry anymore.
"I'm sorry, son. If only I knew that this would happen, we should not have come. We are here to find you the best university... "
Ajie did not say a word, but his tears were running fast down his face. His knuckles had already turned white in his effort to stop his trembling.
"Sir... " The tension in the atmosphere halted when Dino walked into the room. He gazed into the eyes of the two innocent victims who were crying silently and then to the interrogation officer.
"Please follow me," Dino said as he walked out of the room, leaving the father and son wondering what was happening.
Their forlorn figure made them look like desperate victims waiting for their verdict of capital punishment.
To the officer's surprise, the whole team of a special task force was already gathering inside a large function room. Officers of the higher ranks were there. What shocked him the most was the presence of the Director-General.
"We will be planning for a major operation tonight..." One of the officers answered his unspoken questions, seeing his bewildered look.

During that night of the commotion in Elsa's place, Dino and his team, together with the higher and major task forces with the presence of his uncle, Director-General Alfonso, were finalizing their execution plan in the arrest of the people behind this great drug syndicate. For many years they had ruled and employed the people of Kamelyo as their troops of drug mules under the cloak of their designation as factory workers and administrators. The plants which manufactured computer parts, electronic components, and metallurgical elements had a mega laboratory of illegal drugs, connecting one building to another, underneath its massive buildings. The protection of their passage routes along the shoreline, which the company owners asked, was only an act of pretense to drive away from the suspicion of the anti-drug forces.
Also, during that night, Allie sent Dino a message about her prediction that Ben, who held a high position in the company, would not delay in sending his revenge towards the man who reopened his old wound caused by a failure of winning the woman he loved before. Of course, Dino would value any of her requests. Not only as a friend who also desired for his success but as the main lead in pointing out the main culprit of the high crime which was long happening in their place.
While some of Dino's men were hiding beneath the thick rows of mangroves to capture the bearer of that bag of drug packets, Allie placed her spy camera into the hole.

I don't mind sharing you what I am currently balancing: schoolwork, clubs (that I'm president of), college applications & programs, volunteering, a job and mental health. 

Especially the month of November is time consuming for college apps (if you know, you know), so I had NO TIME at all to update even if I really wanted to. 

I'm of course not sorry that I have been occupied with them because they are my work and responsibilities, but I really am sorry for not keeping my promise to post. 

I have listed down what the upcoming chapters would be, and I'm excited to post when I do!

Eric was frustrated. He'd been to every major retailer in town and heard the same story. VirtuNet game connectors and preorders for Fate were all sold out. There'd been a huge demand for the game even before the announcement of the Fate Championship Series. But the massive prizes for the tournament, combined with the game's appeal and the relative cheapness of the system meant that there had been a massive rush to buy VirtuNet connectors the day of the announcement. As a result for the last week, he'd been hitting up retailers everywhere; he'd even persuaded his mother to drive him to the next city over in an attempt to purchase one there, only to be met with the same story. VirtuNet connectors were sold out everywhere.  
"Am I really going to be unable to buy a VirtuNet connector?" Eric despaired. It wasn't as if he was alone in his plight. Across the net, there were thousands of people lamenting their inability to purchase the connector. Even Hurricane seemed surprised by the popularity of the game, having released an announcement stating that they'd put in an order for three times the number of connectors from their manufacturer, but it would take another week for them to be available in stores. Four days after Fate released.
To Eric, this was unacceptable. The difference four days could make at an MMO's release was huge. Four days was the difference between being a frontrunner, who could monopolize resources and push around other players, and being a middle of the pack player who got bullied by higher level players. Even if Fate was a different experience, being four days behind was not a prospect Eric relished, especially since Jun would never let him live it down if he was the weakest member on the team.
With a sigh, Eric looked at the number on the screen and dialed it into his Smartwatch. Hearing the soft ring, he crossed his fingers and began to pray.
"Hello?" Came a voice from the other end.
"Hi. I was wondering if you had any VirtuNet connectors in stock," Eric asked.
"Sorry, we're all sold out. We'll be getting some more in next week though." The employee responded.
"Ah okay, thanks anyways," Eric replied as he hung up.
"F***!" He swore, hitting the wall with his fist. 
"Eric?" It was at this moment that his Mother's voice drifted up the stairs. "Can you come downstairs, honey? We have something to talk to you about".
Eric groaned. His parents had been asking him almost daily about his plans for university. He still didn't even have an acceptance letter from any of his serious choices, although he was sure one was coming. Mostly sure at least.

Making his way downstairs, Eric saw his parents sitting on the couch. On the coffee table in front of them was a large white envelope with a familiar crest emblazoned on the front. Eric's heart caught in his chest; he took a peek at his father's face and saw a familiar dark frown. Looking back at the floor quickly, he walked over to the leather recliner and took a seat. His father was a stern man in his mid 40's; a career military officer, he was a man Eric both respected and feared. At 6'2 with a bald head and an imposing countenance, his father was the type of man one envisioned when the phrase, built like a bear was uttered. The slight scruff on his face after a weekend of not shaving did nothing to reduce the fear Eric felt upon realizing he was finally going to have to explain his choice in program to his father.
His mother sat opposite his father, more diminutive than his father, with graying hair and a kind face. Eric sincerely hoped that his mother would be supportive in his choice. Otherwise this was going to be a very long day.
"Yes? I was kind of busy you know," he started, trying to avoid looking at the envelope or his parents, a task made difficult by the lack of any other points of interest in the room. Despite this, Eric made a herculean effort to seem interested in the dust on the windowsill beside him as he spoke.
"A letter came. For you." His father stated matter-of-factly, as if it was just any other letter. If Eric hadn't seen the envelope, he might have even assumed it was a birthday letter, as his birthday was in two days. 
"Oh?" Eric replied carefully.
His father pushed the letter on the table towards him, "It's right there. Why don't you open it?" 
With trembling hands, Eric reached out to pick up the letter. While this was the University he wanted to go to, he had not applied to a program his parents would approve. A fact he had been avoiding by telling himself that maybe he would just be rejected. 
Opening the letter, Eric read the contents to himself. As expected he had been accepted to a major in Game Design with a minor in Economics. He would start in the fall and the room he had requested had been reserved. Putting the letter down, he tried to smile at his parents.
"It looks like I've been accepted. I start in the fall."
"Oh Eric! That's great news! -" 
"For what program?" His father interjected. Cutting his mother off mid-sentence.
"A Major in Game Design and a Minor in Economics - it's an honours program," Eric replied, doing his best to make the program sound as prestigious as possible. It wasn't a lie - the program was actually one of the highest rated game design programs in the country, and the University's Business Faculty, which the Economics minor was a part of, was held in equal esteem. He just hoped his slightly more oldschool father would see it that way.
"Game design?" His father asked, furrowing his brow. "You applied for game design? I thought you told us you were going to apply for something that would give you a future".
Eric swallowed dryly, this was exactly the reason he had been trying to avoid in this conversation. Nervously, he tried to formulate a response, "Well it's a very highly regarded program you know. And games are becoming more popular every year. Just look at how well Fate is doing and that hasn't even been released yet!"
"How many game designers get to work on a game like Fate, rather than pumping out awful mobile game after mobile game as quick money grabs? Do you really think you'll be able to get a job at a place like Hurricane if you go through this program?" His father countered.
Eric faltered. It was true that the odds of him getting a good job in the industry were low, but did his father have to crush his hopes like that? Stealing a glance at his mother, he looked over at her for support, only to notice her doing her share of studying the upholstery as if it contained untold secrets and she was determined to uncover them. The odd thing was that she seemed to enjoy this act as the phantom of a smile could be seen on her face.
"What's so funny, Mummy?" Eric asked, attempting to divert the flow of the conversation.
"Don't change the subject, Eric!" His father said sternly, but his own mask was starting to crack, with a grin slowly spreading across his face.
"What? What's going on? Why are both of smiling like that?" Eric asked, suddenly unsure of the situation.
"Oh Eric! I'm so proud of you! XX University is a great school! Why didn't you tell us you'd applied?" His mother suddenly burst out, jumping up and running over to give him a hug. Eric was now totally lost. The conversation had gone from him being yelled at to him being congratulated and hugged, all within less than a minute.
His father grinned, "You left yourself logged in on the VirtuNet console. We received the email that your application had been received over a month ago, naturally along with the details about the programs you applied for. At first I was a little disappointed, but after we looked into it, we found out that this is actually a great program. It has a high graduate placement rate and the faculty is very highly rated internationally".
Eric breathed out, relief written on his face. "I was really unsure if you guys would approve of it".
"Well the Economics minor definitely helps. You'll still have useful real world skills even if you can't get a job as a game designer after graduation. Do you have a plan for where to stay when you go off in the fall?" his mother asked, finally participating in the conversation.
"Yeah, Griffin and I plan to share a room - he's entering the engineering faculty," Eric replied.
"Oh Griffin's going too?" 
"Yup, we applied at the same time. It says here that our room has been reserved," Eric gestured at the letter as he responded to his father. His father nodded approvingly at this; he always liked to know that a plan existed and was being implemented properly. 
His mother was practically bouncing with excitement as she suddenly jumped up and ran into the front room. Eric peered curiously after her as she returned with a large box in her hands.
"Your mother and I know that you're extremely excited about Fate, and given that we also know how you tend to procrastinate, we decided that as a combined graduation present and early birthday gift we'd get you this". His father said as his mother placed the box on the table.
Trying desperately to temper his growing excitement, Eric grabbed the package and ripped off the carefully folded wrapping paper to reveal a smooth box with the words, 'Hurricane: Fate Special Edition Game Connector (Fate the game is also included, this is a pre launch product and will be unavailable for play until July 16th, 20XX). Seeing this, Eric barely resisted letting loose a real scream of joy, opting instead to jump up and hug his mother as tightly as he could. 
"Thank you! Thank you so much!" He repeated over and over, letting go of his mother and turning to his father who offered him his hand, before pulling him into a quick hug. 
"The clerk told us that you need to set that up if you want to connect when the game goes live on Friday," his mother cautioned him. "Now remember, this is your birthday present, so you're not getting anything else in two days!"
Eric grinned in response. This was already the best gift he'd ever received. The fact that he no longer had to worry about his parents finding out about his college plans combined with this gift relieved him of all the stress he'd been feeling for the past few days.
His father smiled, "Happy early birthday, Eric. Your mother and I are both proud of you. Now then, you've got two hours before dinner to set that up. Also, we're going to be setting some ground rules for its use over the summer. I know you'll be playing that all day and after a long discussion, your mother and I are fine with that." His mother nodded at this with a conflicted look on her face.
"But," his father continued, "In exchange we expect you to have all of your chores and duties around the house done before you get on for the day. That means lawn mowed, house vacuumed, make sure your brothers get breakfast and other meals, your room and bathroom stay clean, and the cat is fed. We also expect you to show up for dinner. Got it?"
Eric nodded. This was exactly the deal he'd hoped to strike. His parents had always been supportive of his dreams. But they'd often expressed skepticism when he said that he wanted to make money using gaming. As long as he made sure to get the stuff around the house done before he got on for the day, he would be fine.
"Deal". He said quickly. 
His father grinned, "Alright, you can escape back to your room now."

This novel is primarily about gaming in a VRMMO. The MMO is the main setting of the story. There will not be unnecessary drama in real life. There will not be weird subplots about the implications of VR technology. This is a novel about an MMO setting and I plan to keep it that way. Do be warned that the first ten chapters of vol1 (Fate Revealed) is almost entirely worldbuilding and character development. Hopefully everyone can enjoy the first volume all the same!
