I was very against the whole Anbu route to avoid the Root route, then I looked at the cover pic and it shows him in an Anbu mask. I was like 'face palm' of course the author always planned for him to join Anbu, duh.

Honestly, I could never see Naruto in Anbu. Sure he is good enough to be in it, he simply refuses to follow orders. Remember, Naruto's most powerful skill is his talk-no-justu. I could never see Naruto going to assassinate someone, he is much more likely to turn them to his way of thinking and become allies then to simply kill them. Mind you I would easily stick him in the T&I department, he could get anyone telling their most guarded secrets to him.
