I shook my head and wiped the fresh tears from my face. It crushed me to admit the truth finally, but there was nothing else to do. Princeton knew it all, and if I didn’t leave to go back and do what he wanted, then my family would be gone.

I peered up at the only people I’d truly learned to entrust. I could only imagine the betrayal they were feeling. It made sense. I knew they had every right to be upset.

I took a deep breath, shuddering as I let it out. “I left four years ago. I’ve been in South Carolina for the past two.” I shrugged. “I got comfortable. I love this job, this bar, the people we care for.” I looked at Kaitlyn. “You’re the first friend I’ve made. In every other state, it was business, and I didn’t stay long enough to become close to anyone. I never stayed anywhere longer than six months until here.”

Kaitlyn said nothing, but I didn’t blame her. What would she say?
