Chapter 4: Chapter 4

"Lead the way" Rosalie said with a kind smile on her face, excited to see her new home.

Following Dalton they walked the short distance to the rental cabin. As Rosalie approached the front she could tell it definitely needed some work.

The cabin itself was very small, it boasted a small covered porch on the front with a few rails snapped from either weather or ware and tear. The paint matched the main house in its white color but had clearly not been kept up as well. The roof was an old black shingle that would surly need replacing, she would talk to Dalton about that.

"It will need some work, but the walls are strong and it keeps heat in well during the winter." Dalton said to try and ease her nerves about the rough exterior.

He continued "I would have fixed it up myself if I'd had the time, but the farm keeps me busy most days of the week" he mentioned as he began to unlock the front door.

Rosalie quietly followed him, observing the cabin and what would have to be done. It was indeed in rough condition but the rent was cheap. Though she still wanted to see the entirety of the cabin before she made her decision.

Unlocking and opening the door with a loud squeak, Dalton entered first.

"It's a one bedroom, one bath. The walls will need painting but it has potential." Dalton stated, noticing Rosalie's silence he decided to step back and allow her to look around.

Upon entering, Rosalie could see the old faded blue paint that once must have been vibrant. Wood flooring went throughout the whole cabin in a dark mahogany color. The kitchenette was to the left and a living area to the right. A antique wood stove rested in the corner of the living area. The back wall of the room had two doors, the far right door entered to the bathroom which held a claw foot tub, sink, and a toilet. The left door entered to a small bedroom just big enough for a bed and a small dresser.

"The roof looks as though it will need replacing" Rosalie said and looked to Dalton.

"It will, I'll arrange for a new metal roof to be installed." Dalton said and waited for any further demands.

"Does the wood stove work?" Rosalie asked.

"Yes, very well. I'll provide the wood you will need" he said.

As she continued to be silent he went on "I priced the cabin low as the repairs will cost a bit but I will pay for the major repairs. So what do you think?"

Rosalie pondered. Though she made out more than well off with the divorce, she wanted to find something that she and Lily could live off for a long while before she inevitably had to get a job. Being with her daughter was her main priority, even if it meant living in a cabin that was far from the luxury she had been used to.

"I'll take it." She said as she extended her free hand out to Dalton with a smile.

Dalton watched as her face lit up. She was beautiful, but when she smiled it was like the whole world stopped. He reached out to shake her hand and was halfway tempted to kiss it instead. It felt so soft and small in his rough hand. He wondered if the rest of her felt the same. Pushing that thought away, he let go of her hand.

"You can keep whatever furniture in here that you want, I'll send Billy my farmhand over tomorrow to remove whatever you don't need. When does your moving truck get here?" Dalton asked

"No moving truck, all I own is packed in my car." Rosalie stated hoping he wouldn't pry and further.

Sensing that she didn't want to go any more into the matter, he started out the door. Before heading back up to his house, he turned to ask a question that he couldn't hold in any longer.

"When does your husband get here?" Dalton asked to feed his own curiosity but as soon as the words left his mouth he regretted it. Rosalies face turned disheartened with a hint of anger.

"I don't have a husband. It's just lily and I" she replied dryly and she turned her face to her baby and gave a slight smile.

Not wanting to pry anymore, Dalton bowed his head and said "goodnight" as he headed back to the house.
