Chapter 1: THE BREAKFAST CLASSIC

Amina woke up to the bright ray of sun reflecting from the window into her cheerful eyes. Yes, it was the day of results. Amina knew she was the one and only person in her entire University who deserved the title of vice president in Arts Society. Her popularity on social media as an artist already had stunning effects on campaign. Well. it was time to rush because something new was waiting for.

Dressed in lilac and white frock, she was looking decent as always. Her personality mattered to her. She felt pride in elegance. She was a seeker who contained a lot more than she knew. In search of her dreams to get her desired position, she was already working hard.

She smiled herself looking into the mirror, A sense of proud flushing in her cheeks. She brushed her fingers through her hair making sure there was no flaw. And undoubtedly, She looked flawless.

"Someone's Glowing", Her mother said merrily, putting the half fried eggs on table.

Mr. Malik sniffed quietly, reading his newspaper as his Chai smoked off. He glanced at her daughter coming down the stairs and without giving any reaction, he sprinted his glance back on the newspaper.

This stare made Amina a bit annoyed. Her parents knew how excited she was for this day and of course, It was a big day for her.

'Assalamaulikum Abba! Amma!', She greeted her parents sitting down on the chair leading her hands forward to grab the toast.

'Walaikum As Salam', Mr. Malik uttered in a voice so dim, it was barely audible. Amina's Mother made the atmosphere a bit easy starting the word.

'So! Finally its the day you were being crazy about! I know you will win this title. You deserve-

'Pass me the pepper', Her father was doing this on purpose. He had never been happy with his only daughter and in 18 years of her life, he never appreciated her. Such mentality was engraved in many of those homes in Pakistan where talent was only marked with the rank of position and passion didn't matter unless it was for the cause of someone else's dream.

In the north of Karachi, "Malik & Sons" was gaining popularity in construction industries for their remarkable work in repairing the damaged roads of the district. The firm was inherited by three brothers, who worked in harmony, but only for the superficial world. Within the circle of family, things were completely opposite. Amina's father was one of the youngest brothers and had always been suppressed by the elder two of them. Fortune was not the only reason of competition among them. The elder brothers had a heir to hold their so called business throne but Rashid Malik was blessed with an only daughter which he never consider a blessing. His 'want for more' had damaged him so much that his aura felt heavy where ever he'd go.

Amina was in a different zone now that she has again encountered this scenario. Her esteem was not the same as some moments before. Mrs. Rashid took the pepper swiftly and placed it beside the eggs. Things were quiet again on the Breakfast table.

'What about her Wedding proposal? Have you thought about it?', He said taking a sip of his Chai that no longer steamed in a cold voice that pressured the warmness of the room. There was a bleak silence.

Amina felt that rage suddenly gaining its power. Her nostrils twitched and she frowned looking blankly on the plate that was not even touched yet.

'Can we please let go of this topic Abba! I am not in a state of marrying someone I don't know about and its just... I don't know', Amina ended her statement blankly. Tears slightly visible in the corner of her eyes. She could not even say out loud what she wanted to say. Words were again burdens roaming in her unconscious mind. She was used to this environment but today was her big day. She wanted this to be different. Why everyday something needs to be discussed that doesn't even belong here!

'Handover the tiffin. I am leaving and make your daughter learn some manners. She has grown into a lady and doesn't even know how to talk!', He drifted away wiping his mouth with a handkerchief. As the door closed, Mrs. Malik stood up from the chair and hugged Amina gently that her warmth filled her silhouette with a gentle feel.

'I know what's going on in your head love and remember I will stand by your side whatever happens. I will make sure the history doesn't repeats, I promise!', She smiled indifferently at Amina who was still in denial of what had happened again. Amina knew her mother was her shield that won't let her daughter go through the same pain she went through.

Amina banged her fist on the table furiously, 'Amma I cannot take this anymore! what was my mistake? that I am a Girl and I am obliged to get married at such an age where I cannot even tackle my socks. I have aims and dreams. I want colors and brushes in my life Amma. I am in college now. I just cannot handle this', She cushioned her against her mothers bosom as if she was in need of the tenderness of love. Both embraced each other.

'Amma I have to leave now', She got up to kiss her mothers cheeks wiping her eyes with her palms.

'But you haven't eaten a bit Amina', She tried to open her eyes as wide as possible to create that terror look but instead it made Amina laugh.

'Amma don't stretch your eyes so much you look like a parrot with peach fuzz', She giggled with numb eyes taking her bags before the sofa in drawing room. Her bus had arrived.

They exchanged goodbyes and Amina left behind another day of classic breakfast rituals of her home. She walked to the bus and as soon as she sat down, her favorite part of the day arrived.

She, her playlist and breeze flowing through the window crashing on her beautifully flushing face.

She took out her iPod and earphone and as the bus got its speedy pace, Her eyes closed as she pressed her head into the headrest and her melodious songs taking her into a different realm filled with serenity, where she belonged. She had a beautiful day ahead.
