Chapter 288: 23

We couldn't stay there forever. I smiled at Bryce when we finally decided to leave. I didn't understand most of what he wanted to find out by scanning my body multiple times. He requested more scales, and some beast crystals. Promising us something good in exchange.

I was a bit skeptical that he'd be able to make something truthfully good with a few scales, and a crystal or two. Ethan seemed to want to go up again, but was hesitating to ask. People were startled by the sudden movement when I took my head off the overhang. Offering a horn to Ethan to use as a handhold before lifting him up to his notch easily. Seeing Ethan so easily relaxing into his notch made people look at us both funny.

I flared my wings, and jumped into the air. Catching the wind, and taking to the skies with Ethan still in the notch on my back. Taking off wasn't some graceful affair for the human clinging to my back, but once he got past that point it wasn't difficult for him to stay on as long as I was mindful of his presence. My wings held strong even with the added weight of Ethan on my back. I was pretty sure I could hold all three if I needed to.

I wanted to practice flying with all three more often because I needed to train my body to carry the weight, but Jax was hesitant. Savannah was willing, but she wasn't all that fond of going up without being strapped in. I wasn't going to push her into that position against her will. As far as Jax was concerned. He still had a few issues with how our bond had formed.

I was just glad he wasn't blaming me for it anymore. He recognized that we were both technically at fault for that one, and he liked the perks that my bond granted him. Just not fully adjusted to it all yet. From the memory spill over I'd gotten from him I figured he was just used to being the golden boy of the family. Expected to improve his mana mastery on a daily basis.

Told to continue improving no matter what he had to do to manage it. I didn't care about any of that. He was free to do as he wished under me, and that was making him feel more than a little odd. He was still striving to improve like before. Just with no one to report to, and no expectations of improvement.

We spent most the afternoon scanning around the base. We dropped down to the ground a couple times to help out the adventurers that were struggling a bit. They were surprised to see me allowing Ethan to ride me, but I didn't really care what they thought. I flew back down to the warehouse where I was staying at, and dropped Ethan off before going back into the warehouse. I flared my wings to get the guards to back off a bit before walking through the door.

"That kid is going to take years off my life," I sat back at my desk with huff.

"You mean the dragon kid?" Vernon asked with amusement in his tone, "Newest rumor has it that he can ride the damn thing."

"Ride it," My tone went noticeably sharp, "I find that hard to believe."

"Half the people coming in said the kid gave them a hand from the back of his pet beast," Vernon smirked, "I guess we'll find out sometime soon. From the lack of surprise his party had when they found out he was out flying tells me he does it often."

"I take it you already heard about them resting their beast in front of the blacksmith shop," I sighed.

"Yeah," Vernon chuckled, "Apparently they had their beast out there most of the day."

"I've got complaints from half the settlement about their loose leash on Nix," I rubbed the back of my neck, "Nothing I can do anything about since he's not causing any damage. Then there's all the inquiries. From all the people he's helped out. They all want to know about him, and if he'll continue to help them, or will he turn on us?" I shrugged helplessly, "I don't have anything to tell them because I honestly don't know. Those kids he's with though."

I turned on my computer screen with a click rotating to holo screen so Vernon could read. Vernon's eye brows went up as he read.

"Ethan, and Savannah are wanted fugitives for helping out this Archaic sympathizer known as Wyatt Nix," Vernon nodded slowly as his brows went back down, "Kids a real piece of work too. Multi elemental mage with violent tendencies, and a short fuse." he sat back, "I didn't know there was such a thing as a multi elemental mage. Registered as capable of using earth, wind, fire, water, lightning, and space element. Is that even possible? Is the guy even still human?"

"I think that he's the one that they're hiding," I pointed to the back of the picture that Vernon was focused on now.

"What about that other mage kid?" Vernon laced his fingers together.

I clicked, and the page shifted to a missing person report.

"He's been missing for seven months," I honestly didn't know how to feel about that part, "Just missing. I'm not sure if he's been kidnapped or just went with them or what?"

"He hasn't come to us so I'm guessing he just went with them," Vernon looked thoughtful, "The real thing we should be worrying about is the kid that we haven't seen yet. A mage that unpredictable can't be good news for us. If the space element is a real thing then he could just appear out of nowhere anytime he wants."

"That's if he isn't here already," I flipped the screen back around, and dimmed it.

"You think he's already here?" Vernon looked at me sideways.

"I think he's the one keeping that beast under control," I sat back in my chair.
