Chapter 248: 19

It could wait a bit longer. I let the notification minimize itself into the corner of my vision. My body tensed as I pulled my murderous intent back in. I was pretty sure the alpha wasn't going to hold my reaction against me. Most the wolves surrounding us had been oozing hostility since the beginning.

"It's late," I yawned in a showy fashion since I wasn't all that tired, "And my friends would prefer to sleep inside."

Damn that was close. I almost called them my bonded. That was fine around those I trusted, but I didn't trust the wolves yet. Not completely. I stretched slowly as if I didn't have a care in the world.

I looked out into the trees as my eyes tracked heat through the trees.

"They can stay in the spare rooms in my house," the alpha offered, "The walls should be wolf proof."

"You do know what will happen if my friends get hurt don't you?" I looked at the werewolves that were slowly getting back on their feet after I'd knocked them out.

"They know," The alpha frowned at the other wolves, "I'll remind them if they forget."

"Good," I nudged Jax, and Savannah forward with the tip of my tail.

Ethan walked towards the alpha without any encouragement. My instincts didn't sense any immediate danger so they'd be safe as long as the alpha kept his word. I'd have to get his name later. He'd done enough for me to think it was worth learning his name. I leapt over the encirclement, and snapped my wings open to glide down to the top of the trees.

Then I closed my wings to drop into the tree cover. Tracking a heat signature deep into the trees. I could feel rifts opening up around the island. This place was dangerous. I could sense the tower on the island that kept the portals opening here.

My abilities were slowly growing much stronger than when I'd started out. I didn't know how long it would take, but I would grow to be much stronger than I was now. I didn't know how long it would take. I was looking forward to how strong I would grow. The XP required for each level was starting to get ridiculous.

Over a hundred, and fifty thousand for one level. I needed more powerful opponents or a lot of opponents. That got me thinking about VR again. Was there a game I could play that would pit me against as many opponents as I wanted. Maybe a new game.

It wasn't difficult to find the online forum. Maybe I could create one of my own. I wasn't the smartest creature in existence, but I had a cheat in the form of the system. I caught my prey, and gorged myself on its meat. I just needed to keep myself alive long enough to manage a few levels up.

I extended my wings to relax in the small clearing I'd found up near the tower that attracted the portals to this island. I smiled to myself as I relaxed into another dreamless sleep. I woke the moment the sun touched my scales. I guess I should focus on strengthening light element for now. If I could revive that dragon egg than that would mean I wasn't alone in this universe anymore.

That, and it would be a big step in the right direction. I sat down, and tried to focus on light element. I knew it would be difficult since I didn't have an affinity with light magic, but after an hour I'd hardly gotten anywhere. From point zero one to point zero three was a pretty pathetic improvement. I looked at the alpha who'd walked all the way up the hill to see me.

"What is it?" I turned my head so I could focus on him.

"I wanted to know if you were going to come back down to town," he asked.

"Are my bonded looking for me?" I let my eyelids drop lazily.

"Yes," he nodded.

"Did you really think I wouldn't notice that you followed him up here?" I snapped my eyes up as I looked out into the trees, "You should come out before I get irritated."

Three wolves walked forward out of the trees. The alpha clearly knew they were there, but seemed to tolerate their actions since they had good reason to be worried.

"He's not much of a meal," I snorted lightning just for the hell of it.

That didn't seem to calm them down, but the alpha found it humorous. That got him bonus points from me. My smirk was more than enough to express my amusement. The three that followed the alpha didn't find it nearly as entertaining as I did. The alpha smirked along with me since he found it humorous as well.

"I'll come down to the town," I stood up on all fours, and started walking down the hill.

I didn't have to slow my pace for the wolves. They could catch up. I started running down the hill with a spring in my step. I leapt high enough to clear even the tallest of trees. Snapping my wings out to glide the rest of the way down.

It felt good to glide like this. Perhaps it would feel better to fly. I needed to spend some time learning how to actually fly. Part of me still didn't want to fly. Gliding, and flying were completely different ballgames.

After falling down from the sky I was hesitant to go much higher than the treetops. I landed in the middle of their small town. Startling some of the people that had been minding their own business around town. The children around the village were both amazed, afraid, and excited by the prospect of a creature like me staying near the village. Ethan came out of the Alpha's house first.

Overjoyed that I'd come back to town. I laid down, and curled myself up so I looked a bit smaller so people wouldn't be as afraid of me. Jax, and Savannah were slower to come out. I didn't have time to really chat with them before the alpha caught up to me. I'd already confirmed with my own eyes that my bonded were fine so I didn't need to delay this conversation any longer.
