Imani blinked repeatedly after realizing that the pain was gone and she took in a deep breath. That didn't make her ribs hurt and it no longer felt like someone was using a power drill in her head. She could still taste Nikolay's blood as she stared up at his face but she didn't mind.

In that moment, she remembered that Nikolay was the vampire king and that meant she wasn't going to die today. She suddenly burst into tears because she had believed that she would and had already come to terms with it.

Lucas' heart clenched as her whole body wracked by sobs and he dropped the table leg he was holding, about to pull her out of Nikolay's arms to hug her but the vampire beat him to it. His hands froze mid-air as she gasped while crying, wrapping her arms around Nikolay who shut his eyes as he ran his hand through her hair.
