Chapter 12: The Successor

With that, the Quirk Apprehension Test was over. Class 1A was dismissed and we were sent back to class for normal lessons for the rest of the day.

As they were walking back to class, Yasuo's classmates were naturally gravitated towards him as a result of his overwhelming performance during the test.

"Your quirk is crazy, Yasuo! You can fly super-fast and literally crush things with your mind! That's absolutely insane!!" Denki exclaimed excitedly.

"As expected of the second manliest man in class. After me of course." Eijiro stated with his arms crossed and nodding proudly.

Yasuo looked flattered by the overwhelming praise from his classmates, "You guys are exaggerating too much… but thanks, I appreciate that."

Mina Ashido, the girl with the pink hair, pink skin and black sclera went up next to him, "Now I'm curious, how many points did you get for the practical portion of the Entrance Exam, Yasuo?"

At her question, the rest of the class with a few exceptions leaned in curiously, having wondered about that themselves.

"It has to be more than a hundred right?" Hanta Sero, the one that had a tape-dispenser like quirk suggested.

"Yeah, that sounds about right." Another agreed.

Yasuo scratched his cheek. His score was so overtly exaggerated they might think he was lying even if he told the truth.

"Ah… I received 112 Villain Points." Technically it was true, just that he left out the number of Rescue Points he got.

The class audibly sounded impressed, looking at Yasuo with some amazement.

Bakugo who had been silently listening to their conversation was stunned. He had thought no one could have come close to his score. After all, he spent the entire time running around and demolishing the robots without caring about anything else. 112 Villain Points meant that ink-hair bastard had overtaken him by a significant margin.

"Woah… yeah you were right, Hanta." Ochaco added.

But Eijiro ruined Yasuo's plans to stay low-key by asking, "Then what about your Rescue Points? I remember you were helping a bunch of people during the test."

Yasuo helplessly laughed, "Well I did get a few Rescue Points as well."

"…265."

Uraraka turned to Izuku, having heard him mutter that number, "Hmm? Did you say something?"

Hearing Uraraka speak up, some of the students turned back to see what she was talking about.

Midoriya looked up, his eyes filled with a mixture of emotions - awe, anxiety, fear, a ton of insecurity and self-doubt, and even hints of envy. "He received 265 Rescue Points…"

The One For All quirk user, who was only saying that to himself, was unintentionally overheard by a few people near him.

"EHHHHH!? 265 RESCUE POINTS!?" Uraraka's loud exclamation had the entire class spinning their head towards her and then at Yasuo.

"N-no way…!" Rikido Sato, a tall and muscular young man commented, eyes widened in disbelief.

Shoto walked forward and put a hand on Yasuo's shoulder, not realizing the difference between his clothes and the barrier that stopped the half-hot-half-cold quirk user from making actual physical contact, "Is that true, Yasuo?"

Todoroki's eyes narrowed. He had heard about U.A.'s public Entrance Exam, which was far from the Recommendation Entrance Exam he had taken. From what he heard about it, the practical portion consisted of two parts, Villain Points which was gained by defeating faux villain robots, and Rescue Points that was gained by helping fellow examinees.

Though he was confident he could have aced that exam if had actually taken it, after doing the mental math in his head – Yasuo had achieved a total of 377 points… that was honestly unbelievable.

Not bothered by the gesture, Yasuo replied, "Uh, kind of, yeah, but how did you know that, Midoriya?"

Izuku flinched, realizing that everyone had heard what he said. He only knew that information because All Might told it to him. So he scrambled to make an excuse, not wanting to reveal his relationship with the Symbol of Peace, "A-ah, I overheard it from some teachers…"

"Seriously? How is that even possible?" Ojiro, a blonde teen with a kangaroo like tail gawked.

Eijiro then made an 'Aha' look, "Ah! You must have been the one who destroyed that giant zero-pointer robot! I was looking at it thinking the 'Gimmick' must have malfunctioned because it started punching itself in the chest. But now that I think about it, you were using your quirk on it right!?"

The rest of the class tried visualizing in their head what that must have looked like, incredulous at the very thought.

The guy who everyone was looking at modestly scratched his cheek, "My quirk was just coincidentally suitable for the exam. I'm sure everyone did great as well, considering we all made it here together."

Iida stared at Yasuo in admiration, "So Yasuo perceived the true nature of that practical exam as well, huh? I have to admit it, he truly was the superior candidate!"

Yasuo waved it off, "Ah I didn't really perceive anything, I just did what I thought was right."

"Spoken like a true hero. Damn it, don't get cocky Yasuo! I will surpass you soon enough!" Eijiro jokingly challenged to which Yasuo just laughed it off.

Although unbeknownst to him, many others had similar thoughts. This was U.A., the top Hero Academy in all of Japan after all. The people who came here weren't the type to be content with being subpar.

Ochaco glanced at Izuku who looked downright miserable, and in an effort to console the boy got everyone's attention, "I-Izuku took down the zero-pointer too! He did it save me!"

Midoriya jumped at the sudden attention and blushed heavily from Uraraka's words.

"Another one, huh? But if you compare between the two… ah sorry." Denki started, but apologized after realizing he inadvertently insulted Izuku when the other boy looked downcast at being compared with Yasuo.

Yuga Aoyama brushed his hair flashily, "Yes, that is true, I saw it myself. Although his arm was broken afterwards, it was still an impressive performance. Though not as impressive as my Navel Laser-"

"Tch, who the hell cares about stupid-ass Rescue Points!" Bakugo yelled, frustrated at the attention not just Yasuo was receiving, but also Izuku who he considered as lower than dirt.

"Deku is still a worthless fucking loser! And you, Ink-haired bastard, don't think you're hot shit now! The Entrance Exam was just that, a test! What are you getting so cocky about when you're just a damn extra!?" He finished before walking ahead of the class, his shoulders rudely pushing against the other students in his way.

The other students watched him walk away, startled at the coarse language and unprovoked hostility from Bakugo.

"Good grief, talk about an explosive temper..." Yasuo commented, breaking the tension and getting some laughs.

----------

After Class 1A had been dismissed, Aizawa was walking back to the faculty's office. His mind was busy contemplating about the results of the Quirk Apprehension Test. Although the biggest star of the show was obviously Kurogami Yasuo, Aizawa did not focus only on the Psychokinesis quirk user.

He was also analysing the strengths and weaknesses of his various students' quirks. For some, it was very obvious. Yuga Aoyama's laser had the potential to be a powerful, offensive ability – but the fact that he got stomach-aches when pushing his quirk limited this offensive capability. He would have to teach Aoyama to more efficiently utilize his quirk to make full use of that limitation.

Mina Ashido was another one whose Acid quirk was tremendously offensive in nature. But that was it. Being a hero didn't mean just fighting villains. Saving people and helping out during disasters was another large part of heroism that was often overlooked by a vast majority of the U.A. students who came here to learn how to fight. How could she be a hero if her acid can only hurt and not help? That was something Aizawa would work on with her.

Aizawa slowly went down the list in his mind, mentally pointing out the flaws and thus points to work on of his various students, until he reached Midoriya Izuku… a problematic student in his opinion.

And then the other end of the spectrum was Kurogami Yasuo. Terrifying power that was also perfectly paired with masterful control. The complete opposite of someone like Midoriya. From what he remembered from the clips of the practical exams, Yasuo possessed overwhelming might in the form of his Psychokinesis power and some kind of intelligence gathering ability that could assess a situation instantly.

Defensively, Yasuo had yet to be tested, so Aizawa wasn't sure if that was a weakness he possessed. But if he was being honest, there was no way such an incredibly well-rounded and versatile quirk like Yasuo's Psychokinesis could be lacking in that area.

As he is, Aizawa thought that Yasuo could already skip right ahead to get his provisional hero license if the school allowed it.

Aizawa continued mulling in his own thoughts when he was suddenly waylaid by the muscle-for-brains All Might.

"Shouta, you big fat liar!" The Symbol of Peace declared, with his usual heroic pose, looking slightly upset. His muscles bulged against a suit and tie that looked to be struggling to contain his hulking mass.

Eraserhead glanced at him, ignoring the name-calling, "So you were watching, All Might. Why are you wasting your time like this?"

Similarly, All Might ignored the question, "A rational deception? Who were you kidding? Last year you expelled an entire class of first years because you mercilessly judged them as having zero prospects."

"But why did you go back on your word now? Could it be… did you have a feeling about that boy, Midoriya's potential!?" All Might questioned, looking proud of his successor.

Aizawa silently stared at All Might, wondering why he was so concerned about a random student. Even if he just became part of the faculty here at U.A., that wasn't reason enough for such attention to be placed on that one student.

'Doesn't he know I re-enrolled the students I expelled? Though it is also good to have that kind of a reputation as a stern, no-nonsense teacher, so I won't correct him.'

"He doesn't have zero prospects… that's all I can say. Because if he had no chance at all, I would have already expelled him. It is cruel to let someone chase an unrealistic dream and watch them fail without stopping them." Aizawa answered.

'So this is you being kind then…' All Might thought to himself, "Then what do you think of the other boy. Young Yasuo."

All Might being concerned about Yasuo, now that made sense to Aizawa. After all, that boy definitely had the potential to succeed the reckless idiot in front of him as the Symbol of Peace.

"What else is there to say? …Are you looking at him as your successor?" Aizawa questioned. Right now, they still didn't know enough about Yasuo to make a hundred percent accurate judgement on his character. For all they knew, he could have been putting on a show the entire time, trying to suck up to his teachers.

Time would reveal, as well as difficult and stressful situations, whether Yasuo truly had the spirit of a hero, or he was just a fraud.

"A successor? I'm afraid not, Shouta. I've already decided- no, I already have my eye on a certain someone to succeed me." All Might stated, though internally panicking if Aizawa had caught his mistake.

Of course Eraserhead, a hero who relies a lot on his keen intellect and perceptive observational skills caught All Might's Freudian slip. But he didn't really want to push for an answer, since it would only be a waste of time trying to figure out who All Might was referring to.

"Why not? On paper, doesn't Kurogami Yasuo check all the boxes required to become the top ranking hero in the future?" Aizawa casually asked, not really caring one way or another what All Might thought.

The Symbol of Peace sweated, struggling to find an answer. After all, he couldn't just say that he had already picked a successor in the form of Midoriya Izuku now could he? "Ah… uhm, that is, because… oh, look at the time. I have to get going now! Farewell, for I Am Leaving!"

He sped away, hoping Aizawa would not have caught his suspicious behavior. Needless to say, Aizawa definitely did.
