(General POV)
While Class 1A was changing into their gym clothes where it turns out the locker rooms were right around the corner of their classroom, Yasuo used his psychic sense to scan the grounds.
Not only did he discover where Aizawa was at, he also realized that not even U.A. had any measures to counter his psychic sense as it penetrated through all forms of walls and doors.
By the way, he also deliberately avoided looking at the girls when they were changing while he was using his psychic sense.
'I might get pervy sometimes but even I know where to draw the line. Something like that is called voyeurism, which is a crime!'
Yasuo then led the class to where Aizawa had gathered, giving some vague excuses as to how he knew where the teacher was. Though he knew he wasn't doing anything perverted with his psychic sense, Yasuo rationalized that the girls in his class didn't know that. Sensitive information like that could be revealed at a later juncture when they got to know him better and wouldn't look at him with accusatory gazes right away.
Seeing that the class gathered relatively quickly, Aizawa looked satisfied at their punctuality.
'I thought they would take longer than that. Good. That means they took my earlier lecture about not wasting time seriously.'
"Today, we will be having a Quirk Apprehension Test." He began.
"A test… of our quirks!?" Some of the students exclaimed.
One of the girls started asking, "What about the entrance ceremony? Or orientation?"
"No time to waste on that stuff if you want to become heroes." Aizawa immediately shot back.
Indifferently, he continued, "U.A. is known for its 'freestyle' education system. That applies to us teachers as well. We are granted heavy leeway in the way we teach our students, that is a major reason why pro-heroes like us who are generally more independent consented to teaching here at U.A."
"Soft-ball throwing. Standing long jump. 50-metre dash. Endurance running. Grip strength. Side-to-side stepping. Sit-ups. Seated toe-touch. You did all these in middle school, right? Your standard, no-quirks-allowed gym tests."
"This country still insists on prohibiting quirks when calculating the averages of those records. It's irrational. In my opinion, it's only a matter of time."
He glanced at me, "Kurogami. How far could you throw the soft ball in middle school?"
Slightly taken aback at the sudden question, Yasuo answered, "69 meters."
"Great. Now try it with your quirk. Do whatever you need to. Just don't leave the circle." He gestured towards a circle drawn on the ground before tossing at softball at me. "Give it all you've got."
Aizawa examined the boy infront of him, thinking back to the clips of Yasuo's performance he had seen on the monitoring screen. A frighteningly powerful combined with the compassion and altruism not unlike the Symbol of Peace, All Might.
Eraserhead concluded that Yasuo was a boy he needed to keep an eye on and pay close attention to. For if he somehow strayed from the path of light… it would be disastrous.
Izuku looked at Yasuo, a tall, black haired, handsome teen anxiously. 'He is the guy All Might told me about… the number 1 ranked in our Entrance Exams; someone who received 265 Rescue Points in addition to the 112 Villain Points that he earned in the first two minutes of the exam… I know he only told me this information to motivate me but how could I possibly compete with someone like him when I break my limbs every time I use One For All?"
Yasuo looked at the softball in his hands, contemplating which form of his Psychokinesis he should use. Since this was just a demonstration, Yasuo decided not to go overboard with his quirk.
Taking a stance, Yasuo channelled more psychic energy into his psychic armor that was always wrapped around him – or at least as long as he was awake and conscious – to enhance his physical capabilities. He wasn't going to be the one throwing the ball, his quirk was.
The Psychokinesis quirk user cocked back his right arm that was holding the ball, tensing his body and then swung it forward. The softball left his hand at incredible speeds, resulting in a slight shockwave emanating from his figure as it flew forward.
"I-incredible, is that some sort of a strength enhancement quirk?" Izuku muttered to himself while the rest of Class 1A spotted similar looks of amazement. Except Bakugo who looked annoyed.
'Tsk, just an extra.' He bitterly though to himself.
The device in Aizawa's hands that automatically detected the distance between the ball and the pitching stand beeped.
'That's probably not his limits…' The homeroom teacher showed the results the device displayed: 685.8m
Yasuo shrugged at his results. He could have thrown it further, but there was no point wasting his energy before the actual Quirk Apprehension Test began.
"It's important for us to know our limits," Aizawa continued his lecture, "That's the first rational step to figuring out what kind of heroes you will be."
The class excitedly exclaimed, "Woah that's awesome!"
"685 meters? Seriously? Damn, that's manly!"
"So we can use our quirks for real!? Now, that's what makes the Hero Course great!"
Other than Izuku who was worrying about how he was going to handle all eight events with a quirk that could destroy his body if he used it even once, the rest of the class was excited at the prospect of using their quirks openly in a test when they had always been limited by their previous schools.
However, Aizawa levied a cold glare at the excited class, "Awesome you say…? You're hoping to become heroes after three years, and you think it'll be all fun and games? Fine, the one with the lowest scores across all eight events will be judged hopeless… and will be expelled!"
Class 1A widened their eyes and looked shocked, "Whaaaaaa!?"
However, while some looked anxious, there were also others who got excited.
'A chance, to prove I'm the best! And the one with the lowest scores will probably be… Deku. Serves him right, a quirk-less loser like him shouldn't have gotten in to U.A. in the first place!'
'Time to show off my flashy and super cool Navel Laser!'
'…Hmph, relying on just my right side, I will show that I can surpass my old man.'
Izuku, on the other hand, looked like he had fallen to despair. "It can't be… expelled? I can't regulate my power yet…"
Indifferent to the various reactions of the students, Aizawa brushed up his messy hair, revealing a look of amusement, "Welcome, to the Hero Course at U.A. High!"
"Sensei! Isn't that too unfair? The lowest scorer will be expelled? It's only the first day, and besides, someone here might have quirks unsuitable for physical tests!" Uraraka protested.
"Unfair? Natural disasters, man made accidents and rampaging villains, the world is never fair and full of unexpected things. You think a villain will be understanding to a pro-hero whose quirk is just not suitable to counter them? Ridiculous!" Aizawa coldly rebutted.
"Heroes are the ones who correct that unfairness. If you think U.A. is a place where you can coast through without worry and still graduate to become a pro-hero, then let me be the one to break that illusion. U.A. isn't that kind of a place. For the next three years, U.A. will run you through the ringer. That's Plus Ultra. So use your strength to overcome it, give it your all."
The students, even Uraraka who had protested at first, had no choice but to accept Aizawa's words. 'So this is U.A., the top Hero Academy in Japan… as expected.' Was what some of them thought in response.
The first test, the 50 metre dash, soon began, and the students took turns going in pairs according to their seat numbers.
The first two, Yuga Aoyama and Mina Ashido were the first to go. Although Yuga used his navel laser to propel forward, Mina who just ran with her natural speed was slightly faster than him.
The other pairs continued, with the fastest thus far being Iida whose Engine quirk gave him gave him a motorized engine in each of his calves, allowing him to run at incredible speeds. He had set the record for the class at 3.04 seconds.
Soon, it was Momo and Yasuo's turn. Momo, to Yasuo's pleasant bewilderment, had unzipped her gym uniform, revealing the black sports bra she was wearing underneath.
"M-Momo, what are you doing!?"
She turned and looked confused for a moment before realizing what he was shocked about, "Oh, I apologize. See, my quirk is called Creation. I can create any non-living object by transforming the fat cells in my body. But for larger objects, I need a wider area of exposed skin create them. I apologize if my appearance offended you."
"Rather than offended- I mean, that's an amazingly convenient power!" Yasuo quickly got past his initial embarrassment and complimented.
"Yes, but one draw back to my quirk is that I need to understand the molecular structure of what the object is made of in order to create them. So I end up having to read a lot about chemistry." Momo explained.
"Heh… so what are you making for this event?"
"You can see for yourself." She then created an electronic scooter which she pulled out of her exposed navel, much to Yasuo's fascination.
"Wow, that's incredible! That is… an electronic scooter right. I can't even fathom how much of the molecular structure of this scooter you need to understand since it's made up of so many different materials."
She giggled, "Like I said, a lot of time spent reading. What about you, Yasuo. A strength enhancing quirk, if my guess is correct."
Yasuo titled his head, "Well, not exactly. Mm, you'll see."
Momo tilted an eyebrow, "How mysterious. Very well. Good luck for the test, Yasuo."
He smiled back, "You too."
"Yasuo Kurogami and Momo Yaoyorozu, you're up next." Aizawa called out, gesturing over to the pair but stopped Yasuo as he was headed towards the starting line.
"Hey, Kurogami. You better give it your all. I know what you're capable of, so don't treat this as a game or I'll expel you." The homeroom teacher threatened before letting him go.
Yasuo frowned at the threat, but continued towards the starting line where Momo was already on the scooter and ready to begin.
'Give it my all or get expelled huh? How scary. Then… should I run? Hmm, running with my legs is too slow. So then, I guess I'll fly. How fast am I when I fly at full speed? I have never been tested like this since I was 5 years old so even I am not sure. Guess I'll find out right now.'
A machine next to our starting line was the one who gave the countdown with a robotic voice, "3… 2…"
Yaruo readied himself and summoned the psychic energy to wrap around his body.
"…1. Go!"
Yaoyoruzu revved the engine of her scooter and the machine started zooming towards the finish line, but a gust of wind blew past her and she watched with wide eyes at Yasuo who was flying ahead at incredible speeds.
The machine at the finish line made a beep as Yasuo flew past the finish line at blindingly fast speeds, before stopping a few feet away from the finish line and a few feet in the air, the previous momentum vanishing entirely, contrary to traditional laws of physics.
"Beep. 1.12 seconds." The machine announced. The others all spun their head at Yasuo looking shocked beyond belief.
After all, running, or rather flying 50 metres at just 1.12 seconds was unheard of.
'How…? Even though this event played directly to the strengths of my quirk?" Iida wondered to himself in incredulity.
'That fucking extra…! 1 second? Grr… fine, he is just a fast bastard then, doesn't matter. I will still come out on top.' Bakugo angrily glared at the levitating Yasuo.
'It wasn't a strength enhancement quirk, but a flying quirk? No, wait, it looks more like a telekinesis quirk maybe?' Izuku was busy analysing Yasuo's quirk, the person who All Might had pointed out as his greatest rival to succeed All Might's position as the Symbol of Peace.
But for Yasuo, this speed was considered pretty lacklustre. He was someone who could launch a 100kg weight at half the speed of sound when he was six. Something like flying 50 metres at 1 second was still subpar compared to the speed when he moved inanimate objects.
Since he was moving his own body instead of an inanimate object, he had to keep in mind not to injure his fragile human physique. He probably could have flown faster than the speed of sound considering his weight and how much his powers had improved since his last measurement, but there the concern over whether his body could take it or not was holding him back.
Seconds later, Momo Yaoyorozu crossed the finish line after him, looking astonished. "A flying quirk, then? But wait, you threw the ball with your arm, so… two quirks?"
"Nope. My quirk is Psychokinesis. Basically I can do a whole bunch of things including moving things with my mind. Flying is just moving my body through the air telekinetically." Yasuo explained.
"So then the softball throw…?"
"Mmm… how do I explain this? Ah, try to touch my body." He requested.
She looked confused at the request but complied and reached to touch his shoulder, "There, I am touching your arm- wait, it actually feels a little weird."
Yasuo smiled, "That's because you're not actually touching my body. I have a thin layer of Psychokinetic energy on me which I call Psychic Armor. It is also what I used to throw the soft ball before."
She had a look of understanding, "I see. So although it looked like you were throwing the softball with your arm, it was actually being thrown by your quirk instead? You were manipulating the Psychokinetic energy around you, and by extension your body, to give you the extra strength needed to throw it that far, correct?"
"Hey, you got it in one. You're really smart, Momo."
Unlike other girls who might have been flustered by the compliment, especially coming from a pretty boy like Yasuo, like he had been expecting, Momo merely chuckled and immodestly thanked him, although it did not seem conceited from his perspective.
Rather, it seemed to Yasuo that it was simply the confidence of a girl who lacked typical insecurities because she fully aware of her own strengths and weaknesses. Her intelligence was something she displayed for the world to see, as though telling everyone to judge her by the contents of her character rather than her appearance.
Instead of Momo being flustered, it was actually Yasuo who felt butterflies in his stomach at the sound of her pleasant giggle.
