It was then he saw her, running toward two men who were firing at the American troops. He saw her leap and land feet first into one of the men. He smiled brightly. That had to be Cam. Only Cameron Andrews would try something like that. As she turned toward the other man, Pauly raised his rifle and fired. But his bullet was too late. He watched as Cam turned, her face meeting the butt of the other man’s assault rifle as he swung around to face her. That man was thrown forward as Pauly’s bullet hit him squarely between the shoulder blades.
Pauly raced toward the still figure on the ground. He could feel bullets flying around him but that didn’t slow him down. Reaching Cam’s body, he carefully rolled her over. In horror, he saw the bloody dent in the side of her face. Quickly he felt her neck for a pulse.
“Medic! Medic!” he yelled, when he was certain he could feel the beating of her heart.
The young lieutenant was beside him almost immediately.
