Chapter 3: Chapter Two

"Max." Lila said as she entered her room.

"Oh, wow! You look so much prettier without all that dirt!" Max gushed. "Do you need a hair brush?"

"Brush?" Lila raise and eyebrow.

"Y'know, to untangle your hair?" Max said as she held up a piece of her hair.

"You." Lila said pointing at her head.

"I'll do it for you." Max smiled. "Sit."

Lila sat on the edge of Max's bed and looked back at her before smiling.

"Ow." Lila groaned as Max ran the brush through her hair.

"Sorry. It's a little messy." Max apologized. After a few minutes, Lila's hair was dentangled and lay flat down her back.

"Pretty." Lila said looking into the mirror.

"Very pretty." Max agreed. "Are you hungry?"

Lila nodded eagerly, rubbing her stomach.

"Come on. Maybe Billy will take us to get a burger." Max said grabbing her hand. Lila gripped Max's hand tightly.

They stood infront of Billy's door. Max knocked a few times before he opened the door.

"What?" Billy sighed, a cigarette hanging from his lips. Lila coughed before swatting the smoke away.

"We're hungry. Could you take us to get food?" Max pleaded.

"Kinda busy right now." Billy replied, staring over Max's shoulder at Lila. With all the dirt gone, she was actually pretty. No, scratch that. Gorgeous.

"Pretty?" Lila giggled.

Billy looked at her before looking back at Max. "Can she not speak full sentences?"

"I guess not." Max shrugged. "Maybe she wasn't taught in the bad place she came from."

"Hungry." Lila groaned before looking up at Billy. "Food?"

Billy sighed before grabbing his keys. "Come on."

The three of them exited the Hargrove house and walked over to Billy's car. Max climbed into the backseat and slid the seat back.

"You can sit upfront. It's way cooler." Max said.

"Okay." Lila smiled before sitting down in the passenger seat. She buckled her seatbelt like Max told her to earlier before folding her hands in her lap.

Billy climbed in the driver's side before starting the car. He sped down the road so he wouldn't have to spend anymore time with the freak then he had to.

Lila looked over at Billy and pointed. "Pretty."

"You think I'm pretty?" Billy laughed and Lila nodded.

"Thanks, I guess."

Lila nodded again before looking out the window. They arrived at the burger joint where tons of people were. Lila's eyes widened and she gulped.

They all got out of the car and began walking towards the entrance. Lila's lip trembled as she got closer to more and more people.

Billy glanced over at her seeing that tears were brimming her eyes. He sighed, annoyed before grabbing her hand.

"You're okay."

Lila looked down at their hands and then back him.

"Thanks."

When they sat down, Lila sat beside Billy, still gripping his hand tightly. As the waitress walked towards them her grip got tighter. Billy winced in pain.

Once the waitress walked away Billy sighed in relief as Lila's grip loosened. He took his hand away, shaking it.

"You almost broke my fingers."

"Sorry." Lila said before holding her hand out again. "Back."

"Looks like someone likes you." Max snickered.

"In her dreams." Billy rolled his eyes. "I'm just being nice."

"For once." Max mumbled causing Billy to roll his eyes again.

Max panicked as her mom and Neil pulled up to the house. She tossed her magazine onto the bed before grabbing Lila's wrist.

"You have to go into Billy's room, they never go in there." Max stared.

"Okay." Lila nodded. Max led her into Billy's room, gently pushing her in there before shutting the door.

"Max!" Billy shouted as he laid eyes on Lila. He sighed heavily before rolling his eyes.

"How long will you be in here?"

Lila shrugged before sitting on his bed. "Tired."

"Oh, no. You aren't sleeping in here." Billy shook his head. "You freak me out. I don't wana wake up in the middle of the night to you trying to kill me."

Lila furrowed her eyebrows before pointing at herself. "Nice."

"Weird." Billy said pointing at her.

Lila frowned. "Sad."

"You read minds right? What else can you do?" He asked propping himself up on his elbow.

Lila looked at him before looking around the room. She grabbed the lighter from his dresser and held it over her arm, wincing as her skin burned.

"Hey, what the hell." Billy said snatching the lighter from her. Lila showed him the burn mark that had formed before placing her hand over it. She closed her, focusing before removing her hand.

"There's nothing there." Billy said, wide eyed.

"Healer." Lila said before wiping her bloody nose.

"You're weird." He shook his head.

"But I think I could get used to you."
