Chapter 7: Chapter Six

Lila sat in Max's room, waiting for her to come home from school. All day she waited in Max's room, reading a thing Max called the dictionary. It helped her learn words so that she could speak in full sentences.

The clock read 3. 2. 5. Only a few more minutes before Max would come home. Max told her that today they would be helping Mike find Eleven. Lila was ecstatic to find her sister. It'd been so long.

Max burst into the bedroom. "Come on before Billy sees us leave."

The two of them ran out of the back door and into the backyard. The others were waiting on their bikes.

"Hurry." Lucas said. Max hopped on the back of his bike and Lila hopped on with Mike.

After riding for a few minutes, they arrived in at the edge of the woods. Lila stood there, looking up. It was much different then she remembered. It had a darker feeling.

"Shadows." Lila gulped. "Bad."

"What's that mean?" Dustin asked.

"Could she be talking about the same thing Will sees?" Lucas asked.

"Will." Lila said. "I saw him."

"What? Where?" Lucas asked. Lila pointed downwards.

"The Upside Down?" Dustin asked.

"What's the Upside Down?" Max interrogated.

"It's the alternate dimension of our world. Will was taken there last year. But he made it out." Lucas explained.

"This place is insane." Max shook her head.

"Come on. Let's go." Mike said as he began into the woods. The others followed after him ditching their bikes in the trees.

Lila's stomach turned as they got deeper. This was a bad place. Shadows were lurking everywhere.

"Go home." Lila said stopping in her tracks.

"What? You said you'd help us!" Mike shouted.

"Bad place!" Lila shouted back.

Suddenly, something ran past them in the woods. Lila swung around, looking for whatever it was. The noise was nothing like the others had ever heard before.

Soon, they laid eyes on the creature. It was black and slimy. It didn't have a face. It opened it's mouth, showing it's rows of teeth.

Lila's eyes widened. "Run!"

They took off running, trying not trip over branches and roots. As the thing got closer, Lila stopped in her tracks. She had to protect them.

She held her arm out, making a claw with her hand. The creature began levitating infront of her. She let out an ear piercing scream before the thing burst into pieces.

"Holy shit." Dustin said with wide eyes.

"More coming." She said turning around. "Run."

They finally made it out of the woods and onto their bikes. They pedaled fast, trying to get as far away as quickly as possible.

Lila sniffed before wiping her nose.

The group was at the end of the road when they were met by headlights. Lila shielded her eyes, squinting at the brightness.

"It's Billy." Max said. The bikes stopped and so did Billy's car.

The door swung open and he got out. "You two are dead meat! Get in, now!"

"We have to go, Lila. Come on." Max sighed. She knew what was coming. A screaming match between her and Billy. Lila grabbed Max's hand and walked over to Billy's car.

"Goodbye!" Lila waved at them before getting into the backseat.

The boys moved out of the road so that Billy could get through. Billy sped off down the road, gripping his steering wheel tightly.

"Dad and Susan are home. How do you plan on getting Lila into the house?" Billy asked Max.

She was surprised he wasn't screaming at her. "She can go around the back. I'll let her in through the window."

"They'll see her walk through the yard, dumbass." Billy rolled his eyes.

"Well, drop me off and ride around or something. Until they're gone to bed." Max suggested.

"Absolutely not." Billy scoffed. "I have a date."

"Date?" Lila asked.

"It's where you go out somewhere with someone you really like." Max explained.

"With a girl?" She asked Billy.

"Definitely not a guy." Billy snickered.

"Not pretty?" Lila asked pointing at herself.

"What?" Billy puzzled. "I never said that."

"We kissed." Lila frowned.

"You what?" Max exclaimed. "When did this happen?"

"Last night when I apologized." Billy mumbled.

"Why!" Max belted out.

"Look that's not important." Billy said. "She doesn't have a way inside and we're two seconds away from the house."

"You're going to have to just drive around until the coast is clear." Max said. "I'll open your window when their in bed."

"Fine." Billy sighed. "So what happens when my dad asks where I am?"

"I'll tell him you went to the store for me." Max shrugged.

"Cause that's believable." Billy rolled his eyes.

"They're pretty gullible." Max replied as they pulled up to the house. "I'll open the window."

"You owe me, Max." He pointed as she got out.

"Yeah, yeah." Max rolled her eyes before running off. Billy drove away with no destination.

"Do you wanna get up here?" Billy asked looking in the rearview at Lila.

"No." She shook her head. "Angry."

"Oh, c'mon." Billy sighed.

"Asshole." Lila scoffed.

"Hey, this can be a date." Billy motioned. "Pur first date."

"Really?" Lila smiled.

"Yes, now get up here." He chuckled. Lila climbed over the center console and into the front seat. She was leaned up against the door with her legs in Billy's lap as he drove.

"When can it be normal?" She asked.

"So she can speak in sentences." Billy said, raising an eyebrow.

"Practicing." She nodded.

"What do you mean normal?" Billy asked.

"Um," Lila pondered. "Like no more hiding."

"Hate to break it you, babe, but I don think it'll ever be normal. You can't stay with us forever." He replied.

"Babe?" She asked.

"Just a name you call someone you like." He said.

"You like me?" She gasped.

"Do you like me?" He laughed. She nodded her head vigorously.

"I kinda like you too, Lila." He said. They were nearing the house again. Billy glanced outside and noticed his bedroom window being open.

"Alright. We can go inside now." He said grabbing his keys and getting out. Lila got out aswell, following behind him.

"Just wait there and I'll come and get you."

Lila nodded and waited a few minutes. Soon Billy was at the window holding his arms out. He helped her inside and she fell into him and looked up. Their faces were inches away, once more.

Their lips met and Lila's body felt like jello. Billy wrapped his arm around her small body, pulling her in closer. He pulled away and looked down at her. She blinked at him before kissing him one more time.

"Good man."
