Chapter 17: Chapter 16
After a series of tests and updates, Peter Parker finally perfected his suit.
Designed by Kim Barrett, the talented costume designer behind the "Matrix" trilogy and "Aquaman," the suit fits Xu Can's physique perfectly, staying true to the comic book aesthetic. Compared to Tobey Maguire's slightly bulkier version, Xu Can's Spider-Man appears tall, slender, and yet powerfully built.
The film reaches its midway point, and the fully realized Spider-Man is revealed to fans for the first time. Before the audience can fully admire the suit, they are thrown into another breathtaking sequence, as the first-person perspective camera immerses them once again in Spider-Man's world.
Swinging freely over New York, the city bathed in the warm glow of sunset, Spider-Man captures the essence of superhero freedom. One moment, he soars through the air towards a skyscraper, the next, his reflection on the building's glass surfaces makes the audience feel as though they're looking in a mirror. For that brief moment, everyone in the theater is Spider-Man.
"That's it! Here we go again!"
"I love this movie!"
"It's officially releasing at midnight, we have to watch it again!"
"Definitely, I'm in!"
Leonard, Sheldon, Howard, and Raj are ecstatic. How could they watch it just once? The excitement spreads among the other Marvel fans as well.
Who said live-action comic book movies couldn't capture the magic? Who doubted that comics could be successfully adapted to the big screen? And who ever claimed that a Chinese actor couldn't portray Spider-Man?
Marc Webb has crafted a Spider-Man that is nothing short of extraordinary, with Xu Can breathing life into the character in ways no one expected.
Just as the audience revels in Spider-Man's stunts, Peter Parker is pulled back to reality by a familiar ring. The phone in his backpack goes off.
"Peter, are you busy? You didn't answer my call," Aunt May's voice is heard.
"It's okay, I'm not busy," Peter replies, sounding like any other high school kid.
"Remember to buy a box of eggs on your way home."
"Organic eggs, got it."
This moment exemplifies what makes Spider-Man different from other superheroes. While others possess god-like abilities, Spider-Man is always down-to-earth, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, the boy next door. No wonder he remains so beloved.
Just as Peter is about to head home, the phone rings again. Gwen Stacy invites him over for dinner.
After spending time together, the two have grown close. Peter happily accepts the invitation, and what follows is an awkward yet endearing dinner in his everyday clothes.
On the balcony afterward, one of the film's iconic moments unfolds as Peter uses his webbing to pull Gwen back for a deep kiss. In this moment, he reveals his identity to Gwen, completing his confession. The chemistry between Xu Can and Emma Stone electrifies the Galaxy Theater, turning the scene into a fan-favorite romantic moment.
"Aww, so sweet! So sweet!" exclaim the female fans.
"What a romantic kiss, what a romantic confession!"
Unlike past superheroes who would rather die than reveal their identities, Peter Parker's decision to show his true self to the girl he likes is a refreshing change, leaving the audience in awe.
Just as the two are lost in the moment, a police radio crackles to life, pulling the audience back into the action.
"A serious incident has occurred on the Brooklyn Bridge. Suspects are attacking vehicles and harming civilians. All nearby units, please respond!"
Peter reluctantly lets go of Gwen, giving her one last look.
"Go get them, hero," Gwen says with a smile.
Peter nods, flips over the balcony in a stylish move, and disappears into the night. Gwen, left on the balcony, is caught between disbelief and a happy smile.
The film then switches to the perspective of Norman Osborn, whose story as the Green Goblin unfolds alongside Spider-Man's origin. Betrayed by his company's executives, Osborn experiments on himself, inhaling a biochemical mist that transforms him into the Green Goblin. After a fierce internal struggle, the Green Goblin's personality takes over completely.
Equipped with his iconic glider, the Green Goblin heads to the Brooklyn Bridge, seeking revenge on those who wronged him. Spider-Man hears the news and rushes to the scene.
As Spider-Man arrives, Osborn is already wreaking havoc, bombarding the bridge with missiles and attacking vehicles without mercy. A section of the bridge collapses, leaving civilian cars dangling precariously over the water.
In a moment of crisis, Spider-Man recalls Uncle Ben's famous words, launching himself toward the falling cars. He manages to save the civilians, using his webbing to pull the vehicles to safety.
But Osborn isn't done. The Green Goblin and Spider-Man engage in a fierce battle, with Spider-Man shooting webs, trading punches, and performing aerial maneuvers in a stunning display of action. Each fight scene surpasses the last, pushing the film's action sequences to new heights.
"Oh my gosh! Can they really do that?"
"This is insane!"
"Unbelievable!"
The audience is left speechless by the film's battles, which rank among the best in any sci-fi or action movie. Critics and media praise the director's innovative camera work and Xu Can's impressive performance, marveling at the rumor that most of the action scenes were shot without a stunt double. Is it even possible? Hollywood has never seen an actor pull off such feats!
After an intense battle, the Green Goblin is forced to retreat, flying away on his glider. Peter Parker breathes a sigh of relief, but just as he lets his guard down, a missile suddenly strikes. The explosion flips the luxury car carrying the executives who betrayed Osborn, sending them to their doom.
The Green Goblin's maniacal laughter echoes over the Hudson River.
"This is what happens to those who betray me! And as for you, little insect—I'll be back!"
Spider-Man, feeling helpless, mutters, "Spiders aren't insects, they're arthropods…"
An accident on the Brooklyn Bridge quickly becomes front-page news, with many witnesses recounting the terrifying crime.
"Based on initial evidence, we've identified two suspects: the Green Goblin and Spider-Man…" announces Gwen Stacy's father, Officer George Stacy, at a press conference. Grainy photos of the two suspects appear on TV, setting the stage for the next part of the film.
Back on campus, Peter and Gwen share a private moment. Peter reassures Gwen, "You didn't believe what the police said, did you? Those people on the bridge—it wasn't me…"
"Of course not," Gwen replies.
As the film continues, Peter and Gwen's chemistry continues to sizzle on screen, much like the off-screen connection between Xu Can and Emma Stone. When Xu Can's character leans in and says, "I really enjoy kissing you," it's as if the actors themselves are caught in the moment, blurring the lines between their roles and reality.
Meanwhile, director Marc Webb catches sight of the interaction and raises an eyebrow, muttering, "Are they serious? No wonder it's so convincing…"
