Chapter 42: Bait

The news about the gas leak and explosion at the subway had hit the local news in no time. Lila was watching on the TV screen, legs crossed and sipping her third glass of wine in the space of five minutes. It was the only means she found to keep herself the same, one sip at a time.

An angel hovering around New York like it was nothing short of a normal Wednesday. The love of her life was possessed by the devil himself. The devil who she had once thought to be the new and improved Henry Bates. The devil who she had fallen for and given herself passionately to, believing he was her Henry.

She cursed herself for not paying attention to the signs: how he seemed to be clueless about everything and everyone, how his allergy to spicy foods stopped suddenly, how he always referenced God and heaven and hell in all his speech. She cursed at him too. He had an entirely different personality from the Henry she used to know but she had been too blinded by his charms to notice.
