Chapter 38: To The Top of the Mountain

In the future, Legends said that the Unmelting Snow became 'Unmelting' because the Greybeards taught it to ignore the sun, so the heat simply washed over it.

But, because he read almost every single existing book in the current Era and the next 3 eras, Miraak knew the real reason the snow became 'Unmelting'.

The real reason was, of course, was the Auri-El, the Elven variant of Akatosh, the chief god of the Nine Divines, the God of Time itself.

As a small gift, Auri-El benedicted the snow at the top of the mountain, making it an extremely unique resource.

Through research and tests, the Snow Elven discovered that the Snow wasn't really 'Unmelting', it was... Frozen in Time.

The real reason the White Phial would be considered one of the most powerful artifacts made by mortals was that it used Auri-El's Aka Akatosh's benediction to instantly multiply, amplify, and purify any liquid dropped inside.

To begin with, the 'Unmelting' Snow was the only reason the White Phial existed.

...

Leaving the library and returning to the inn, Miraak saw that Arel, the Snow Elven prince was still studying Adept Ice Spells.

Smiling, he said, "Good Job."

Although he still didn't consider Arel his apprentice, he liked hard-working people.

Just as he was about to continue, he saw a scroll on top of the table.

'Unsthalas's Royal Seal of Approbation' was written on it.

'... It was faster then I expected.' Miraak thought slightly surprised.

He expected that it would arrive the day after tomorrow, but it arrived the same day they arrived, making him slightly surprised.

Shooking his head, he focused again.

It didn't matter if it came before then planned. The faster he gets the Unmelting Snow, the faster he can continue with the other ingredients.

Taking the scroll and opening, Miraak confirmed that it was the document that approved his entrance to the Top of the Mountain.

Closing it again and putting it on his bag, Miraak was about to leave, when two shadows entered the room through opposite windows.

Asa and Iphislia.

As the cold wind of Orfarion blew their silk cloaks, they removed their hoods, showing their faces to Miraak.

"The small cells to the West are ours," Asa said smiling like a fox at Miraak.

"And the small cells to the East are ours too," Iphislia said grinning to Miraak.

Since Arel was still new to the group, he lifted his head in confusion.

"... Continue studying. You will understand in time." Miraak said to Arel.

Glancing at the duo, he continued, "Good Job... Follow me."

Leaving the room with Miraak, they left Arel alone studying again.

...

As sunlight shone on the icy streets of Orfarion, three children could be seen walking.

Strangely, the people around them were evading them subconsciously as they couldn't see or hear the three children.

"... The job is almost done." Asa said confidently to Miraak as they slowly walked forward.

"... All that remains the last target, the gigantic group at the south." Iphislia said seriously as she subconsciously tightened her right hand on her right dagger that was hanging from her hips.

As they waited for his response, Miraak suddenly said, "... Since the scroll approving of my entrance to the top of the mountain arrived earlier than expected, you don't need to hurry..."

Finally arriving at their destination, the Royal Palace's Front Gate, Miraak stopped and said, "Wait for me to return and we will subdue them together."

Glancing at them, he took out two necklaces from his bag.

The necklaces were made of gold with beautiful Sapphirine in the middle.

"... Remember to always wear it... " Miraak said seriously as he gave it to them.

"... Alright." The duo responded as they disappeared like shadows in the wind.

Clicking his tongue as he focused, Miraak deactivated his Illusion spell making him unrecognizable, he slowly appeared to the guards that were guarding the Front Gate.

Just as the guards were about shout and point their weapons at him, they saw Miraak taking out the 'Unsthalas's Royal Seal of Approbation' Scroll and showing it to them.

Focusing on it, they immediately saw Unsthalas's Royal Seal, making them gulp.

After all, no one would like to discredit a Royal Family inside the Snow Elven.

Since they were mere guards, they said, "We need to take it to the Queen so she can verify its authenticity before we can let you go to the top of the mountain... Follow us."

Opening the gate, they started leading Miraak toward the Palace.

...

"So, you want to go to the top of the mountain? Why?" The Queen, Aerith Lorathyra, asked curiously as she sat elegantly on her icy throne.

Although the Queen knew about the Unique Ingredient, the Unmelting Snow, she dismissed it almost immediately, because the Snow Elven Empire researched the Unmelting Snow and they couldn't find any real use of the snow, so they let it untouched at the mountain.

"I don't need to answer questions," Miraak said bored to the Queen.

Staring at him for some seconds, the Queen sighed and said, "... Fine... Go."

Glancing at her, Miraak saw her hands, which were holding the throne, slightly shaking.

'Even if she is old, she still has some kind of instinct, huh...' He thought clicking his tongue in amusement.

Following the guards from earlier, they arrived at another gate.

Opening the gate, it showed a path to climb the mountain.

Before Miraak said anything, the guards already closed the gate.

Sighing, he started walking forward on the endless path.

...

Walking calmly, Miraak started to enjoy the walk.

Since he was very far away from Alduin and any dragon, he started using the Clear Skies shout to improve the Weather.

As hours passed, the day became night, the sun left as the two moons took its place.

Using the Clear Skies shout, Miraak saw the beautiful sky above Skyrim.

From grey clouds to the endless black of the night.

With uncountable stars and the two moons shining on the world, Miraak stared at the Region of Skyrim.

Long ago, he saw the same sky from the same position he was now.

But, it was different.

Endless deaths happening across Royal's cities as the Atmorians massacred the Snow Elven Race.

Orfarion falling to pieces.

Unsthalas in ruins.

Rifton with nothing remaining from the Snow Elven Culture.

The snow in Skyrim was painted in blood.

Having lived two different timelines, he sometimes wonders.

... Am I even real?

... Is this all an illusion or a dream?

Shooking his head, Miraak woke up from his daydreaming.

He had things to do.

Philosophy will need to wait for the right time.

Turning around, he continued to the endless path.

Toward the top.

But, he still didn't notice something.

The ring he was wearing on his right hand was glowing in red lights.

It was connected with the two necklaces of Asa and Iphislia.

The enchantment was... Alert 'Danger'.
