Chapter 3: Trouble

Naya inhaled deeply as the mouth watering aroma of the meat she was roasting reached her nose.

"Luckily, I brought a few things to spice up food." She muttered to herself with a small smile as he gaze wandered from the fire. She briefly took in the state of the various warders that she had set up at the entrance of the cave where she was camping for the night. There was nothing wrong with them so she continued what she was doing. When the meat was ready, she began to eat, accompanying it with a small flask of water she had prepared earlier.

Rustle...

The sound of something moving at the mouth of the cave caught her attention and she paused, turning to face it. But there was nothing there.

"A passing creature? The warders worked, I guess. But I should probably remain on guard." She hummed thoughtfully.

.

.

"That's a human!" Keegan hissed to himself, feeling a bit excited. It was his first encounter with a human in this world.

Earlier, he had left the area where he had hatched from the egg to explore and hunt a few small creatures. For a baby Dragon, he was actually quite larger. He was a meter tall and three meters long. His wingspan was about the same as his length, but he could not yet fly. His wings were too underdeveloped for that and would need time, as well as practice, before he could start flying around.

With his large size, it had not been a problem for Keegan to begin hunting some of the smaller creatures in the Geldale forest. The difference between all the food of his past life and the raw meat of the creatures he had killed was quite drastic, but his instincts as a beat prevailed in the end. It was not too bad in the end.

As Keegan was returning to the cave her had hatched in, a fragrant aroma slipped by his incredibly potent nostrils. He took in a deep breath before turning his head to the east. His reptilian eyes narrowed but he could not see too far into the distance because of the many obstacles in the way. He stealthily made his way in that direction before coming across the cave and lone person that was sitting in it and eating a well roasted piece of meat.

"She's alone. But why?" He wondered, and a wave of information came to him. "A beast taming student?" In just a few moments, he had processed a portion of the knowledge that the Codex had provided, but he still did not have the answer to why she was alone. From what he now knew, students usually moved in groups during this final exam.

"I don't have any business with her, but there is a strange feeling. I'll hang around for a bit." Keegan muttered to himself and proceeded to find a pile of rocks surrounded by bushes to hide under. He knew it was not a good idea to stay here where he could be discovered, but he could not shake the strange feeling that arose within him when he saw the young lady.

Like that, hours passed, and the sun began to rise in the distance. With Keegan's impressive vitality and energy, he did not feel the urge to sleep at all. A Dragon's physique was fundamentally different and more powerful than that of a human. He had barely used up any energy in his hunts the previous day, so he did not feel any fatigue.

'Nothing happened.' Keegan thought to himself and was about to leave his hiding place when he heard a commotion heading in the direction of the cave where the lone female student had spent the night. He turned to the direction of the commotion and saw a small crowd of four boys making their way to the cave.

'I can smell trouble from a mile away and these boys stink!' He immediately thought to himself upon seeing the rowdy boys that did not even bother to hide their approach. The boys took a few minutes, but they eventually approached the cave.

At that time, the girl from inside had also made her way out to see the commotion.

.

.

"Oh, look. It's the commoner of our class. Any luck, commoner?" One of the boys, a young man with a head of shoulder length blond hair, said. He had a mocking smirk on his face as a snake curled up around his neck. The snake's body glimmered under the rising sun's light, like crystals under the light.

"I haven't found a beast to tame yet, Klaus." Naya eyed the four boys warily and shook her head. She could clearly tell that they were up to no good. "I should be leaving. There isn't much more time before we need to return and I haven't made any progress." She turned to leave, but stopped when one of the boys stepped in her way.

"I was not yet done talking to you, commoner." The blond boy scoffed. "You think so highly of yourself because you managed to make it this far. If it wasn't for the fact that the academy needs to keep a commoner among us for the sake of "fairness", then you wouldn't be here, you lowlife." The young man scowled, his eyes turning dark and hateful.

Naya's expression instantly crumbled as she realized what was happening. She did not waste time and prepared to run away when Klaus suddenly held up his hand, revealing a circle with markings that had been drawn in its center on his palm.

"By the Tudor name! I'll strike you down! Earth Lance!" Klaus invoked his family name and cast a magic spell, causing the ground to shake. Naya's eyes popped open as she responded to the attack, albeit a tad bit too slow.

A spike made of brown rock jutted out from the ground, its sharp tip pointed at Naya's center, aiming to gut and impale her.
