Chapter 75: Chapter 75: Flight Badge

On the battlefield.

Fearow's Drill Run missed its target, causing frustration for Kas. This Charmeleon's evasive capabilities were unusually strong, defying typical expectations.

Most importantly, Kalia's commands showed no common mistakes made by novice Trainers. Her battle strategy was clear, her instructions swift and precise, hardly resembling those of a new Trainer.

Lian stood on the battlefield, assessing Fearow's injuries. He sensed that another attack might be too much for it to withstand unless it had a move like Roost to recover, which seemed unlikely.

Of course, this was just Lian's intuition; the actual situation could differ. It was possible that Fearow's level was higher than he anticipated, making such resilience feasible.

The key now was to swiftly defeat Fearow. He couldn't guarantee avoiding the next Drill Run, as his burst speed was depleted. At normal speed, he wasn't significantly faster than Fearow.

At this moment, Kas issued another command: once again, Drill Run. Currently, Drill Run posed the greatest threat to Charmeleon, potentially ending the battle instantly. Using any other move might not immediately defeat Charmeleon.

Moreover, Kas doubted that Charmeleon could consistently dodge Drill Run. Although the move requires some time to spin and build momentum, its speed is still remarkably swift.

"Charmeleon, use Dragon Rage."

Kalia opted not to have Lian rely on Hidden Power again but instead commanded Dragon Rage. This choice provided more consistent damage and was sufficient to defeat Fearow.

As a former Grass-type Gym Leader, her judgment, though not always foolproof, emphasized the importance of experience.

Upon hearing the command, Lian prepared to swiftly unleash Dragon Rage. He couldn't guarantee evading Fearow's Drill Run entirely, and while he wasn't certain if this single Dragon Rage would defeat Fearow, the chances were high.

Just as Lian readied his attack, Fearow transformed its downward momentum into rotational force, with its sharp, elongated beak resembling a spinning drill, rapidly heading straight for him.

Whoosh!

As Fearow descended, Lian unleashed Dragon Rage, emitting a powerful shockwave from his mouth directly towards Fearow.

Boom!

With a loud explosion, Fearow collided fiercely with the shockwave, surprising Lian as the bird's sharp beak pierced right through it.

However, the shockwave from Dragon Rage did not dissipate entirely. The remaining force continued to impact Fearow relentlessly, making it challenging for the bird Pokemon to withstand such concentrated Dragon-type energy.

Lian couldn't determine if Dragon Rage had caused significant damage as there was no time to analyze; Fearow was swiftly approaching him.

Attempting to dodge, Lian realized Fearow was already too close. All he could do was constantly maneuver and evade the direct onslaught of Fearow's Drill Run.

"It's futile," Kas observed, knowing Charmeleon couldn't escape this time. His Fearow had undergone specialized training, allowing slight adjustments during its Drill Run based on the opponent's position.

Despite Charmeleon's evasive maneuvers left and right, they were ultimately ineffective unless executed just before Fearow reached it.

Finally, victory against this Charmeleon seemed imminent.

Kas wasn't aware of Kalia's second Pokemon, but it couldn't possibly be more challenging than this Charmeleon. Once he defeated Kalia, he still intended to award her the badge. Her strength far surpassed that of a typical new Trainer, earning his recognition.

As Kas pondered what Kalia's second Pokémon might be, Fearow gradually slowed down. Just as it approached Lian, it suddenly halted, then collapsed weakly onto the ground, losing its ability to battle.

"What happened?"

The unexpected turn of events stunned Kas momentarily before he realized that Fearow had not actually blocked Dragon Rage's shockwave. Instead, it endured the attack, and only the spinning force from Drill Run kept it moving forward.

By then, Fearow was severely injured and on the brink of collapse. As its strength waned, it could no longer maintain momentum.

Unlike other moves, Dragon Rage inflicts fixed damage, bypassing the opponent's defense. Attempting to counter it with an offensive move, like Fearow did, proved futile.

With Fearow unable to continue battling, the match reached its conclusion, granting Kalia victory in this gym battle.

Lian was highly satisfied with the outcome, despite sustaining injuries. In Pokemon battles, getting hurt is inevitable; however, the most significant aspect for him was the substantial gains from this fight.

With a wry smile, Kas recalled his Fearow. Dragon Rage is classified as a Special move, and attempting to counter it with an Attack-type move, considering Dragon Rage's unique effect, was futile.

Although he lost, Kas wasn't disheartened; encountering such a talented Trainer actually brought him joy. He even felt slightly ashamed for initially doubting Kalia. This Charmeleon was significantly faster than the one from the Extreme Speed Conference, and its use of Rock Type Hidden Power clearly indicated that this was no ordinary Charmeleon.

"Are new Trainers already reaching such high levels?" Kas began questioning how this could be possible. Training Pokemon takes considerable time, where the effects of early nurturing only become evident later on.

However, this Charmeleon defied expectations. Not only did it exhibit remarkable autonomy but also possessed extensive battle experience. Combined with Kalia's guidance, it performed like a Pokemon meticulously trained for several years.

Kalia, though expecting a potential victory, still felt somewhat dazed when she actually won. She knew her Pokemon best - from a weak Charmander to now a formidable Charmeleon, the transformation had taken just over a month.

The thought of defeating the strongest Red Star Gym with just one Charmeleon felt surreal to her.

"Here's your badge."

As Kalia pondered, Kas presented her with the Flight Badge from the Flying Type Gym.

The Flight Badge resembled the Speed Badge slightly, featuring an image of a flying bird, inspired by the first Gym Leader's Pidgeot at the Flying Type Gym.

Kalia accepted the Flight Badge and pinned it onto her attire. Now she had earned two gym badges; only one more was needed before she could participate in the beginner Trainer assessment.

"Thank you, Gym Leader," Kalia expressed her gratitude.

"You and your Charmeleon are truly exceptional. There's no need to thank me; this badge is earned through your own prowess," Kas smiled.

After receiving the badge, Kalia didn't linger long and returned to the Pokemon Hotel for some rest.

With the badge secured, Kalia decided not to stay longer in Falcon City. She prepared herself, planning to depart in a few days for Pearl City to challenge the Water Gym.

Compared to the Flying Type Gym, the Water Gym was considerably weaker, posing little issue for Kalia. In fact, she could already start preparing for the beginner Trainer assessment.

Chapter 76: Chapter 76: Over Ten Thousand Combat Points

In the system space, Lian examined today's battle data. He remained at level 18 with no significant changes.

Charmeleon

Gender: ♂

Type: Fire

Level: Lv.18

Ability: Solar Power (Switchable) / Blaze

Moves: Growl, Scratch, Ember, Smokescreen, Dragon Breath, Dragon Rage, Swift, Fire Fang, Hidden Power Rock/Ice...

Abilities: Stamina 489, Attack 450, Defense 428, Special Attack 651, Special Defense 453, Speed 651

Explosive Power: 1.2 (+)

Lian's current Special Attack attribute had reached 651, which was remarkably impressive. Compared to Grovyle's current Special Attack, it was over two hundred points higher; Grovyle's Special Attack ability value stood at only 394.

Today's battle was incredibly intense. The Gligar not only had a high level of 27 but also boasted a speed ability value of 590. Although slower than Lian, it wasn't significantly behind.

Gligar's attack ability value surpassed five hundred as well. If during that fight, Lian had been hit by Gligar's Acrobatics move, considering the type advantage bonus, he likely would have suffered defeat much earlier.

Next, Lian examined Fearow's stats. The Fearow was also Level 26, with its speed surpassing six hundred but still not overtaking Lian. Additionally, Fearow had a higher attack ability value than Gligar, reaching 596 points. With such an attack capability, if that final Drill Run move had connected, it would have been game over for Lian.

After reviewing the combat data, Lian turned his attention to today's battle rating, revealing a look of ecstatic surprise. Today's score far exceeded previous ratings, achieving an unimaginably high level.

Battle Rating: S-

Level Difference Bonus: +107

Racial Difference Penalty: -1

Ability Difference Bonus: +129

Output Difference Bonus: +10,237

Output:

Charmeleon: (10,580)

Grovyle: (0)

Gligar: (203)

Fearow: (0)

Combat Value Reward: +10,472

Total Combat Value: 13,032

Lian noticed his output reward astonishingly reached over ten thousand Combat Points, propelling his total Combat Value to thirteen thousand overnight—a sudden windfall!

The exceptionally high output reward stemmed from Gligar frequently using Roost during the battle. Thanks to Lian's deliberate guidance, Gligar utilized Roost at least twenty times, each instance restoring half of its Stamina.

Lian couldn't contain his delight as he gazed at the 13,000 Combat Points total. It was exhilarating to earn over ten thousand points from just one evaluation.

He clicked on the detailed output data and found that Lian had used Dragon Rage twenty-five times before finally depleting Gligar's Stamina. Meanwhile, Gligar utilized Roost more than twenty times throughout the battle.

With Gligar's Stamina value of 770, each use of Roost restored 385 points. Since Dragon Rage inflicted only 400 damage, it took over twenty instances of Dragon Rage to exhaust Gligar's Stamina in this prolonged standoff.

Pokemon have no limitations on using moves; they can continuously employ various techniques as long as they remain combat-ready. Higher proficiency leads to shorter intervals between move usage.

"Too bad Gligar can't learn Roost naturally; I definitely need a Move Disk for it. If Fearow also knew Roost, wouldn't my score have been even higher?" Lian felt slightly unsatisfied but quickly dismissed the thought. Had Fearow learned Roost, Lian might not have stood a chance against it, let alone achieving such a high combat rating.

With over ten thousand Combat Points, Lian wasn't sure how best to utilize them, having never amassed such a large amount before.

"By the way, why hasn't the system upgraded yet?" Lian wondered aloud. Previously, the system had upgraded at five thousand Combat Points, but now with over ten thousand, there was still no upgrade.

Does it require even higher Combat Points to upgrade now? Twenty thousand? Thirty thousand?

Lian debated whether to save up for twenty thousand Combat Points and wait for the system's upgrade, as this might be his closest opportunity yet.

However, he couldn't be certain if reaching twenty thousand Combat Points would indeed trigger an upgrade; otherwise, it could just waste time.

"Never mind, improving my strength is key. Let's enhance Special Attack first." With this rare opportunity of obtaining over ten thousand Combat Points, Lian decided to prioritize upgrading his Special Attack before considering other abilities.

Currently, his Special Attack Ability stood at 651 points, with the Special Attack Base Stat reaching 120, which translates to a peak threshold of 40+. Lian calculated that to achieve the next tier, a peak threshold of 50+, or a Special Attack Base Stat of 130, he needed to increase his ability by 36 points, requiring a consumption of 8,640 Combat Points.

Using more than eight thousand Combat Points solely to boost Special Attack didn't bother Lian, knowing that converting these points into actual power would enable him to face stronger opponents in the future.

This situation was purely luck, not something easily replicated. Few Trainers would continuously watch their Pokemon get injured, repeatedly using moves to restore health only to endure further damage again.

Lian clicked on the plus sign next to his Special Attack Attribute, gradually increasing its value. His claws continuously tapped the button while closely monitoring the changes in the attribute.

After a brief moment, Lian's Special Attack Ability increased from 651 to 687 points, nearly reaching seven hundred. Simultaneously, his Combat Points drastically reduced to only 4,392 remaining.

Despite still having over four thousand Combat Points, it was significant considering he had just spent more than eight thousand to enhance his Special Attack. Obtaining such large amounts of Combat Points at once would not be as easy moving forward.

"Alright, let's see what else can be improved."

Lian examined his moves. During today's battle, Dragon Rage displayed exceptional offensive power, making it currently his strongest move. However, it had yet to reach its maximum potential.

Lian decided to upgrade Dragon Rage, hoping for some unexpected additional effects.

Spending 500 Combat Points, Lian maxed out Dragon Rage. Initially, there were no noticeable changes; even when checking the description after tapping on Dragon Rage, he couldn't find any specific details about additional effects upon reaching the move's limit.

Lian felt that after upgrading the system, there should be more detailed descriptions available. Unfortunately, he had already exhausted his Combat Points, and it was uncertain when the next upgrade would occur.

He decided to test Dragon Rage's additional effects tomorrow with anticipation. Being a dragon-type move, what kind of extra effect could it have?

What should he enhance next?

With 3,892 remaining Combat Points, Lian considered either improving other moves or increasing ability values.

"I wonder what additional effects I'll get by enhancing Smokescreen." Lian looked at the Smokescreen move; although primarily an auxiliary tactic, it could be highly useful for obscuring opponents' vision.

Today's battles highlighted Lian's vulnerability. Gligar's Feint Attack cost him two hundred Stamina points, and Fearow's Drill Run nearly defeated him.

Lian hadn't yet learned any defensive moves. Typically, Kalia advised using Smokescreen as an obstructive defense strategy. By increasing its proficiency, there might be surprising additional effects.

"Enhance!"

Quickly making up his mind, Lian spent 600 Combat Points to max out the Smokescreen move. Without dedicated defensive maneuvers, Smokescreen remained crucial for him.
