"Good morning," said a pale old man who stood before them. "I'm glad to see you, Mrs. Molly. If I recall correctly, your wand is made of cherry wood, twelve inches long, strong, and potent in magic."
"Yes, Mr. Ollivander, I love my wand." "Ginny, hurry up and stand to greet, this is Evan Mason and my daughter Ginny Weasley, both first-year students at Hogwarts this year and in need of a new wand."
"Of course, of course!" Mr. Ollivander's gaze fell upon Ginny and Evan. "The wizard needs a wand to cast spells, but remember, the wand chooses the wizard!"
Evan swallowed nervously, unsure of how to respond.
"Well, let me take a look!" Olivander pulled out a long silver measuring tape from his pocket and approached Ginny without hesitation. "Ladies first, Miss Weasley, which hand do you use?"
"My right hand," Ginny whispered.
"Please, raise your arm." Ollivander measured Ginny's arm, from shoulder to fingertip, then from wrist to elbow, from knee to armpit, and finally her height.
He explained, "Every Ollivander wand has a strong magical core that is its essence." I typically use unicorn hair, phoenix feather, and dragon heartstring as cores; each Ollivander wand is unique because no two unicorns, dragons, or phoenixes are identical. Of course, if you use a wand that belonged to another wizard, the spells will never be as good."
"Please remember, the wand chooses the wizard!"
Soon Ollivander disappeared among the crowded shelves, and before Evan had time to relax, he saw him emerge with a box.
"There is no doubt that the Weasleys are favored by unicorns," Ollivander murmured softly. "Try this one, 14 inches, ebony, unicorn hair, slightly curved."
Ginny grabbed the wand but returned it as soon as she touched it.
"No, I suppose this one should be it, 8 inches, Willow wood, unicorn hair, flexible!"
Ginny took it, and red sparks erupted from the wand like fireworks.
"An extraordinary match, highly suitable for magical spellcasting, your spells will surely be splendid." Then Ollivander turned to Evan and whispered, "Mr. Mason, I believe it is now your turn."
Like Ginny, Evan used his right hand, was measured, but his selection process was not as straightforward as Ginny's.
Evan tried one after another, but none seemed suitable for him.
"Like Mr. Potter last year, you are a discerning customer, but no matter, we will always find the most suitable wand for the wizard!" Ollivander seemed very pleased. "Let me think, oh, here it is, 14.5 inches, Vine wood, Thestral hair, this is the last wand my grandfather made, he was a very famous wandmaker."
When Evan received the wand, warmth flowed from his finger, and the tip of the wand produced a white glow.
"Wonderful!" Ollivander's voice softened. "I'm not particularly fond of Thestral hair, but I must admit, you and the wand are truly a fantastic match."
"I apologize, sir!" When only he and Ollivander were in the shop, Evan whispered, "What makes the combination so fantastic?"
Evan was intrigued by the Thestral hair at the core of his wand, unlike the other wands made by Ollivander.
"It is a well-known fact that Thestrals are considered a symbol of misfortune." Ollivander stared at Evan intently. "It is a very rare wand core that can only be controlled by wizards who can master death."
Ollivander's voice seemed to slow down.
"Mr. Mason, you possess a powerful positive energy, which is exactly opposite to Thestral hair, thus, it will yield extraordinary results." Ollivander approached Evan's face and whispered softly, "Remember, the wand chooses the wizard, Mr. Mason, there is no doubt you will achieve remarkable feats."
Evan was horrified by the feeling that all his secrets had been uncovered.
He sighed deeply after exiting Ollivanders.
Mrs. Weasley took Evan and Ginny to Madame Malkin's Boutique for All Occasions, but compared to before, Ginny's spirits were low as she would have to choose from second-hand robes.
At that moment, Evan felt remorseful, especially as he was being measured while seeing Ginny looking dejected not far from him, he felt like a sinner.
"Mrs. Weasley, thank you for inviting me to your home."
"My dear Evan, there's no need to be so polite, both you and Harry are good boys, and Arthur and I warmly welcome you in our home," Mrs. Weasley said, approaching Evan and affectionately patting his head with a look of happiness.
"Thank you, I would like to give you a gift."
Evan said somewhat awkwardly, "If you don't mind, I would like to gift Ginny a new dress."
"No, it's too expensive!" Mrs. Weasley said, looking dismayed, while Ginny seemed happy about it.
It seemed that Mrs. Weasley wanted to refuse. Evan quickly said, "You can think of it as a Christmas gift for Ginny, after all, we are friends."
After over 10 minutes of Evan's insistence, Ginny's pleading look, and a good discount from Madame Malkin, Mrs. Weasley finally promised to accept the gift.
In the next moment, Ginny hugged Evan. Seeing Ginny's blushing face and Madame Malkin's smile, Evan felt momentarily embarrassed.
Because it takes time to make a new robe, Mrs. Weasley agreed to let them buy other items from the school supplies list, then they went to Flourish & Blotts together.
Of course, it was mainly Evan who was doing the shopping.
Ginny had many hand-me-downs from her brother, Percy Weasley received top grades in all of his 12 O.W.L.s, so Mrs. Weasley bought him new school supplies and gave Ginny his old things.
"Evan, thank you, this is the best Christmas gift I've received!" Ginny blushed as she thanked Evan.
"Don't be silly, it was just an excuse to get Mrs. Weasley to agree, I'll give you something else for Christmas." "I think I'll give you a red diary," Evan was thinking about what would happen to Ginny this year.
"Well, that's not a bad idea, I'll give you a black one."
"That's what I need!" Evan thought it would be perfect if it had Tom Riddle's autograph on it.
They walked along the cobbled streets, the shops called out to Evan, and the money in his pocket sounded happy, demanding to be spent out loud.
But after browsing through several magical shops, looking at the prices, Evan became melancholic. In comparison to what he wanted to buy, the money in his pocket was too little.
But for a Hogwarts student, Evan definitely had a colossal sum of money. He wanted to buy many things, but they were not on the supplies list.
"It seems I need to find a way to earn money!"
Although Evan could get more money from his parents, they wouldn't give a lot of money to a child, especially if he wants to buy many things that a student shouldn't have.
He had an excellent idea of how to make money, but he had to wait until he went to Hogwarts.
Led by Ginny, Evan bought a cauldron, glass jars, a telescope, and a brass scale. At Slug and Jiggers' Apothecary, the two of them bought a standard dose of herbs used in first-grade potion class. They also bought a Magic Quill, ink, and parchment.
When they passed by the Magical Menagerie, neither of them went in.
Evan thought he wasn't ready to buy a pet because his mother was allergic to birds, and other pets are a bit useful but also need to be taken care of in turn, so it's too much hassle.
However, he collected almost all the mailing lists from the Diagon Alley store. He might need to buy additional supplies here while attending Hogwarts.
Evan knew exactly what he would be facing in the coming years. He couldn't afford to learn slowly from textbooks, especially because he's a year younger than Harry.
It was terrifying to think of staying at Hogwarts and suffering under the Death Eaters while the trio walked into their seventh year.
Evan and Ginny chatted happily along the way, and soon they became good friends.
At Gambol and Japes, they met Fred, George, and Lee Jordan, who bought many "Fabulous Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, No Heat Needed Fireworks."
Percy was looking into a shop full of worn wands, old scales, and capes stained while reading a boring book, "Attaining Power as a Leader."
Without bothering Percy, they passed by Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor, Evan bought himself and Ginny two large chocolate and lemon ice creams, and then they saw Harry, Hermione, and Ron coming out of Knockturn Alley.
Behind them was Hagrid, who was shouting at the three of them, "You know Knockturn Alley is not a place to run around, and I don't want to see you there again!"
"You went to Knockturn Alley, you know Mom doesn't let us go there," Ginny said.
"Leave it, Ginny!" Ron said impatiently.
"Wait, Ron," Harry looked at Evan and hesitated before explaining, "we saw Draco go to Borgin & Burkes with his father, it's a shop specializing in Dark Magic objects."
"Harry!" Ron raised his voice. Evidently, he didn't want his younger sister to know about such things.
"Oh, what did you do?" Evan asked curiously, disregarding Ron's exaggeration.
"Nothing, we watched them for a while, but they left without buying anything!" Hermione turned to Hagrid and asked, "Hagrid, we were following Malfoy, but what were you doing in Knockturn Alley?"
