As they fled the deteriorating yard, Lucas's mind argued. The world he knew was disintegrating before his eyes, both metaphorically and practically. Cracks in reality spread like spiderwebs across the walls of Blackthorn University, and he swears he saw casts from other planets in the cracks. 

"This way!" Marcus wept as he led them down a passageway that Lucas had not seen before. The walls glowed with an otherworldly blue light, reminiscent of the energy he'd seen Avery and Zara transmit.

They smashed through a hefty rustic door and took up residence in a retiring chamber beneath the library. Rows of antique textbooks lined the walls, their backbones shimmering quietly in the dim lighting.
