Chapter 3: Ch.3 Enter: The world of Humans
Finally! We've run into people! My dreams of hanging out with others, playing with them, making jokes, eating with them… Ahhh.. Truly bliss. I can't wait to make some new friends, I bet Spher thinks the same. Wait… Do we even speak the same language? I sure hope we speak the same language, otherwise we're going to have a hard time. Sigh, let's do this!
I look to my right, and noticed Spher thinking about what to do. Oh. She looks like she's having fun. Just look at that happy face. ;D
"Spher! It's time."
"Let's go!"
Spher happily said as we started to walk towards the main line to get in, mostly carriages, but there were some others who were traveling by foot. Does this mean there are other villages and houses around this massive city? That's a good sign, I bet. It's extremely busy, there are people everywhere, like this guy walking to- OW
''HEY! Watch where you're going!"
I told him angrily, this random man in a black robe which then turned around and back into the city.
How rude, what an asshat. Walking into such a beautiful girl and then not even apologizing!
We continued walking, as Spher was already ahead of me so I made a short sprint towards her. But just as we were about to form up with the main line, another gate opened, the main big gate which had… floating text.. above it? It reads..
"Travelers/Immigrants/Adventurers." Spher and I said in Unison, then looking at each other and chuckling as we walked towards the main gate while holding hands. I looked up at the wall of the main gate, was I wrong? Strange. I thought I felt someone watching us…
As we got closer, some guards looked at our direction and started shouting to the other guards, they quickly ran towards us for some reason and surrounded us before we could even start to think. We put our hands in the air as one of them started speaking.
"EXPLAIN LADY WHILE WE'RE BEING NICE!"
The guy had a mustache, was fat and is wearing armor. I have no idea how he got that armor on, unless it was made to size, which it probably is, so I chuckled. I looked at Spher who was besides me and saw her face being dead serious.
"Explain what exactly, kind sir?"
Spher started a conversation with the man, I'll let her do my thing because I'm getting a lot of weird looks right now, so I hid myself behind Spher.
"YOU BROUGHT A DEMON HERE, LISTEN HERE LADY, DO YOU NOT KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT?! WE'LL HAVE TO TAKE THIS DEMON TO PRISON!"
The fat man yelled as he looked at me, his eyes going up and down while smirking a small bit.
I-I, I feel defiled, I have never before felt this insulted, and this is the first guy I ever spoke to! What a let-down… Sigh.
Spher was confused, she then remembered something that could be their saving grace, slavery.
That's right! Look at all the Demi-humans and Demons, caught in cages, filled with sorrow and probably hunger. This… We will do something about this, just hold on for a little while longer!
Spher readied her voice.
"You see, kind sir, this Demon is my property, she is my personal slave."
She smiled at the fat 'knight', declaring me as her property. So I nodded, Yeah yeah I'm her sla- Wait what? Well fine, if it's to let us in, then I shall gladly be her slave.
"Your slave, huh? Prove it. Raise that demon's right hand into the air!"
Spher had no choice but to raise my right arm into the air, as she did, that there was a strong gust of wind, and a slave mark revealed itself around the palm of my hand?! How? What? When?
I whispered to Spher.
"Oi, did you do that??"
Spher whispered back in response, she's as confused as I am.
"No, I have no idea how that got there."
A young man walked forward, he was wearing mostly black and had a robe covering most of his face. But there's something. Wait a second... THIS IS THE GUY WHO WALKED INTO ME! So he came to apologize huh? Good! Atleast he has manners. Oh, looks like he's going to say something now.
"That girl is telling the truth! You may put down your weapons."
And so the guards did what was asked of them, and the fat man walked away, frustrated.
The young man walked towards us and told us some simple, very powerful words.
"You two seem to be in a bit of a pickle, why not come with me?"
Spher and I looked at each other and nodded, I feel like we could trust this guy, because he isn't human. He started walking away, so we followed him. I can't help but feel excited.
So we entered the city, we don't even know where we are right now, but all I know is that this is the beginning of everything. I looked around the city as we were walking, there are people all around, it feels so refreshing to be around more people. I'm already enjoying thi-OW WHAT THE HELL?!
My heartbeat rose, the rocks that penetrated my skin reminded my body of what happened in the forest. Just thinking of it makes me shiver.
There were some people that threw rocks at the passing by Veesha, because she's a demon.
Why?! Why do these people hate demons so much?
I need to get to the bottom of this, I should ask this guy to lend us some books on a later date.
We stopped walking in front of a big building with a sign that says: "Suzuna-City, Adventurer Guild" Adventurer? What's that supposed to be? An occupation where you go on adventures. Wouldn't we classify as adventurers?
"Don't let the people bother you, I'll explain the situation to you two sometime later. Follow me."
We both nodded, and followed him as he walked into the Adventurers Guild. Such a magnificent building, It's pretty important I'd guess. It's got fancy pillars, painting, and statues with titles of "Hero's" I guess they're the guys who saved people from something? So many questions in this new environment.
We walked to the desk where a young girl was standing behind. The young man started talking. "I'd like to register these two as adventurers, please." I see, so that's what's happening! Actually, I have no clue what's happening! The girl responded with a smile, "Thank you for introducing them here, Lukas." His name is Lukas, such a normal name, you'd never guess this guy is actually a demon too.
The girl put two rolls of blank paper on the counter, and a knife for each of us.
"Please put a drop of your blood on the blank paper." She told us, Spher was already ahead of me and was finished. The paper filled with information magically. There's name which is blank for now, rank, magecraft and archetypes. But these were also all blank, except for rank which reported F.
The girl looked surprised, "What? Why isn't your magic filling in? HOW? Wait, let me get the manual." It looks like the girl hadn't been working here for a long time. But let's skip ahead.
Spher's magecraft, her magic specialty, was 'Null', same as me. And because Null negates or erases magic if powerful enough, our other archetypes were left blank.
Now we've been registered as two F rank adventurers, the bottom of the barrel. It goes from F to A and the highest is S. F rank adventurers aren't really adventurers. They're limited to doing basic jobs like gathering herbs, clean up the streets, do chores in people's houses at request. To put it simply, F rank adventurers are just the people who couldn't get a job, so they became adventurers.
In a room, within the guild building. Lukas locked the door with some type of magic as Spher and I could both see the magic particles envelop it and then this entire room.
"I sound proofed this room and locked the door completely. Only trustworthy people could come in now."
"Uh. Okay…" Spher and I were ready to fight for our lives, we've been tricked! Is really no one worthy of our trust?!
"Wowowow, calm down. We're only here to talk, I am also a demon, and I put an illusion on your arm to make it seem like there was a slave mark."
"We knew already." Spher and I said in Unison, we looked at each other briefly and smiled at each other.
"Eh? How? That- Anyways, let me inform you about why demons are so hated, and why I hide the fact that I am a demon."
Thirty years ago, the human race which ruled the continent of Denora had united under one empire. Soon after, they declared war on the continent of Demons, Azrath. Why did they do it? Greed, desire, fear, power. Denora knew that Azrath is powerful, and was the peaceful haven for all things not human, dwarf, or elf. But that changed when they finally invaded with their armies, numbering millions. Powerful soldiers that thought they were about to get some glory.
Their hopes of glory quickly changed into the hope of being able to arrive home, because at that time, the king of demons was none other than Asmodeus Bael, the one hailed as the wisest demon king so far. He led his counter-attack so gruesomely that a quarter of the human's army was ravaged down into the ground within a day.
Denora was frozen, they had no clue who they were messing with, so they started paying the price. When they realized their ignorance, Denora started retreating their army as fast as possible. But Asmodeus refuses to let go of the foolish prey that had fallen into his precautionary measures, so he chased after their armies, eventually razing half of what they had originally to the ground. The Demon Army was so mighty and filled with fury, so the Demon King ordered his army one thing.
"Let us make Denora, a continent where the sky only knows winds filled with ash!"
Ten years ago, Denora was on the brink of collapsing, half of their territory was gone, and they made a key decision, to summon other wordly power. They summoned heroes who were sent, uninformed of the truth, on a mission to slay the Demon King to bring Denora back to its original state.
And so they did, they managed to defeat the Demon King with brute force, at least that's what the history books say. Some say Asmodeus Bael still lives to this day, plotting his revenge or living as a crippled person.
So, a month ago, the war had ended, the heroes had won. A thirty-year-long war which ended in humanity's victory.
"You see, my mother was a demon, and my father a human."
"My father didn't care about Denora as he came to realize how bad it was, so he married my mother."
"But because of that, they were eventually killed because the church ordered a purge of all Demons and Demi-Humans, because they were against the law of god, at least that's what the church thinks.."
"But during those years, my mother and father taught me how to survive despite being a demon. So that's why i stand here today to help you two."
I see, that's quite the deep story. But this guy has been staring at me for quite some time now, switching between not staring at me and then staring at me again, what's with him? Maybe he thinks he's finally found another demon to... do unspeakable things with?! Nononono. Let's just tell him.
"Hey Lukas, that's quite sad and all but could you stop staring at me?"
"OH. Sorry, y-you resemble my mother, a lot. You look like a younger version of her."
Lukas chuckled and I was left speechless. But Spher seemed to enjoy this as I looked at her and she looked at Lukas.
"Mommy's little boy huh?"
Spher mocked him, causing Lukas to scratch his head and laugh a bit.
"Back to the point, I can give you jobs since I have a good reputation within the guild. Would you two be fine with doing chores and helping farmers?"
"Sure why not? It's not like we have any other option."
I told Lukas as i smiled at him.
"Let's start with your first job then! I'll go talk to the lord now."
