Chapter 3: Beast soul
"Is someone fighting out there?" Roan asked.
"Not really, There is a student who trains with his beast soul at night."
"But the area of effect of his beast soul is very wide. That is why he only trains at night. All students know of this and thus they avoid going out at night."
"Authority prohibits use of beast soul in academy. How can he use the beast soul here?" asked roan.
When rankers killed the beasts , some of them gained soul of the beast. Chances of getting the beast soul was low. Providing a first year student with beast soul sounded stupid to Roan.
"Authority prohibits it when you are using it to harm your fellow classmates. But does not prohibit it from being used for training."
"And it is not like no one said him anything. One rank C student Cole walked out one time. The ability that affects the hallway is illusion. He was caught up in illusion and walked naked through whole academy. He recovered after two hours of naked touring."
"According the rules if you want to settle score with someone or have an argument, you can challenge that person. He did not search of the illusion ability user's identity and challenged him."
"The other guy was also a rank C. But still Cole still got beaten blue. Later people got to know that the illusion ability user Evan belongs from one of main four, the Demas family."
"The power of one from main four is not something anybody can challenge. So nobody gets out during night. He is not that bad though, he only starts training when its dark. So no one gets disturbed."
"He should be among the top five strongest student even without using beast soul. If you do not want to go on naked tour on your first day then you should better go to sleep."
"It is different if you have beast soul which can resist illusion. You can freely move if you have it. It is best if you have a night crow" explained Tom.
Night crow is known for its ability to heighten senses, it is best to resist illusion which affect you through your senses.
Even the weakest night crow has two breakthrough, which equals a rank E in strength.
Beasts are ranked according to the number of breakthrough they have achieved. More the numbers of breakthrough, stronger the beast.
First breakthrough strengthens the beast. A simple beast crystal resides in their body by birth, which is reinforced in this breakthrough.
With second breakthrough the Crystal gets broken then rebuilt, covered in one new layer of crystal.
Level of beast crystal is measured by the numbers of crystal layer covering the beast crystal.
Roan wanted to get out and have his questions answered but he was in no hurry. He could wait till dawn. He did not want to risk himself walk naked.
"It is okay, I do not have any beast soul. I will do my thing later." said Roan
Tom did not say anything further. He got back to his bed and continued doing his thing in his watch.
Roan thought of going out. When he came in academy there was already something going on in the hallway. It did not affect him though.
He did not know if he is resistant to the illusion or it was Evan being kind and avoiding him harm.
His guess leaned more to the probability of his Sutra being resistant. He did not have any ability but his resistance to elements was excellent.
'If nothing else then it must have been the only effect the sutra has' roan thought
He has trained for more than six years and yet the one and only breakthrough he achieved made him close to lower level of rank E.
In terms of proficiency, he just has basic tier in learning the White sutra. His grandpa has made five breakthroughs in white sutra. His grandpa is at epic tier which equals rank s.
Epic rank is the absolute limit for this world. People try to have sixth breakthrough to move in the big universe.
If they cannot make their sixth breakthrough then they have to fight for rank in world battles. Gaining a rank in world battles might have chance of someone outside the world fancying the ranker.
If some group fancies a ranker, then they can break the barrier of world for the ranker to join them.
Though Roan's abilities were nothing like superhuman who could control elements , fly or run faster than a car.
He trained for high senses and strong body.
He was not disappointed with his ability but if he had any option he would have chosen an element.
It felt very boring with only two or three times stronger body than normal humans. His speed and strength increased proportionally with his resistance. But in terms of specialist rankers his ability seemed dwarfed.
Resistance did not only reduce damage from elemental attacks. It also increased resistance against physical attack. Though it was useful but in fights it lacked the destructive power.
With nothing remarkable to do he fell asleep. When he woke up in the morning, he received a message on his watch.
The message was from first year combat class. It gave the time and place to reach. From the way the message was written, it was easy to guess not all first years were summoned.
He reached the place according to instructions. It was a hall big enough to accommodate more than hundred students.
When he counted the number of students present it confirmed his earlier guess. Only twenty seven students were present.
Roan was sensitive, while counting the number of students he noticed all of them were normal humans. No one was a ranker or private. He thought of hunting space Tom was talking about.
He said normal humans will be given the opportunity to explore and gain the benefits inside.
If done well foundation of students will be excellent and it will be easy for them to level up in future.
Suddenly two men carrying a big bag came in the hall. A man supposedly the teacher of combat class was standing behind them.
"I am Denver combat class teacher of first year students. You all have been summoned here to enter the new hunting space." said the man in loud voice
"If you can survive there for five days then you are qualified to stay in academy. If you can hunt the beasts and gain strength then you are qualified to be a private."
"Anyone who thinks it is difficult can quit now. You will only be kicked out of the academy. If not, you might die inside and no one will be responsible."
When Denver said this he looked around and observed all the students. No one wanted to quit.
Seeing that everyone looked confident he went on to explain about hunting space.
"It is a hunting space with basic and intermediate tier beasts. In Five days inside you have to survive with no home, and no assistance. If you happen to teleport at same place then you can choose team up."
"Nobody from academy will go to your rescue if you encounter danger. You will be given basic weapon of your choice to arm yourselves." explained Denver
"Can we choose an automatic weapon like beast gun? "asked a skinny student with spectacles.
"Of course, if you can keep supplying it with beast crystals in there" said Denver with disdain
Beast guns were cheapest weapon to fight beasts. It ran on beast crystals. Outside here it was easy to get a supply but inside the hunting space you were responsible for your life.
If you could not hunt a beast then your gun will be useless once empty. In hunts, generally a weapon like knife or sword was used. These weapon could be used without worry for their refills.
Roan searched for weapons that best suited him. He took a knife with a blade of one foot with its end curved like moon. He took two small knife, small and thin in shape.
There were no limits for number of weapon each person could take. He wanted to have a gun too but others were already picking two or three guns each.
Roan was already a rank E in terms of fitness and strength. It was perfect for him to have a knife as a weapon. He could use it best with his strength and sensitivity.
A gun would have been perfect too. But he did not want to use his hunted beasts to refill a weapon instead of absorbing it himself.
No on noticed but the professor brought guns a lot more than other primary weapons. People who wielded guns would first refill a gun then they will save two or three beast crystals for emergency.
In five days, hunting five or six beast would be average. So if students really wanted to have their two or three guns refilled then they might not have the crystals left for their use.
