Chapter 7: Don't you drive?
Today I woke up feeling uneasy. First I offended Trish, then I told off her brother. A smile creeped up my face thinking about what Christian did for me at Jane's party. I got up to get ready for school and to make things right.
As I came downstairs to eat breakfast, I met my mom and dad eating breakfast.
"Morning dad."
"Morning kiddo. Did you sleep well?"
"Yes, thank you" I replied as I brought out my cereal from the cupboard."Morning mom."
"Morning." She said gruffly as she stood up and walked out of the kitchen.
"Give her time kiddo, give her time." He said as he stood up.
"I'm going to work okay?" He said as he was about to leave.
"Sure bye."
Minutes later Trish came to pick me up and I went to meet her locking the door on my way out.
"Hey Trish." I said as I entered her car.
"Hey" she replied and started driving.
Moments passed and the silence was already becoming unbearable until I broke the silence.
"Trish look..."
"Don't worry about it okay. Just don't worry. Everyone has a rough patch in their life now and then so just leave it okay?" But she continued before I could say anything.
"But that doesn't mean you should keep secrets from me Ashley. I feel that you are keeping secrets from me and best friends don't keep secrets from each other right? So just tell me what's bothering you maybe I can help." She finished and by this time we had gotten to school.
Seconds passed before I spoke up
"Sorry Trish I can't." I said quietly.
"Yeah, thought so too." She said and got out of the car but before I could come out, she threw me the keys through the driver's window.
"Lock up would you." And with that she walked away.
Wow I really messed up.
Lunch period passed by and I didn't see Trish at our table so I had to eat myself. After lunch, I saw Christian on the way to class and I decided to ask him about Trish.
"Hey Christian."
"Hey pumpkin."
Pumpkin?
"Pumpkin? What happened to princess?"
I wouldn't lie but I had already gotten used to him calling me princess and I wondered what the reason behind the change of name.
"Yeah. You specifically told me not to call you princess anymore so I decided to change the name."
oh?
"I didn't say-, you know what? Never mind. Do you know where Trish is at? I haven't seen her since she dropped me off and I'm with her keys."
"Oh right. She said I should collect her keys and that she's not dropping you off anymore. Did you guys have a fight. I tried to ask her but she wouldn't tell me what happened."
"Oh. Yeah we did but just minor girl stuff." I lied.
"But it didn't sound minor when Trish told me to collect her keys."
"Well, maybe she didn't want to tell you." I said as I placed the keys on his palm and my fingers grazed his palm causing a surge of electricity to pass through my body and I think he felt it too because of the way his grey eyes darkened.
"Soooooo....." He said trying to release some of the tension in the air.
"Yeah?"
"Want me to drop you off after school since you don't have a ride home?" He asked hopefully.
"Yeah sure, why not." I said as I started to walk to my next class and he followed me.
"I have a question though."
"Fire away."
"Don't you drive?" I stopped in my tracks as soon as he asked that question and my face paled as all the images of that night resurfaced in my mind.
"W.....w....why...why do you ask?" I said fearfully.
"Well don't you have a car? I asked Trish but she said she doesn't know either or do you not know how to drive?" He said and I continued walking.
"Um.....um...um.... I do have a car and I do know how to drive but I just like catching a ride with Trish and driving stresses me out." I said quickly.
"Okay." He said not believing me.
"So why are you following me?" I asked changing the subject. If he noticed, he didn't say anything.
" I have Chemistry." He said dryly.
"I also have Chemistry."
"Then that answers your question."
