Chapter 191: Earth affinity

I ignored all the students trying to get some last minute points, and headed for the area with minimal heat signatures. Picking out an open easily defendable spot, and creating a dome of thick ice. As soon as that was done I did my usual switch routine.

Forcing earth affinity.

The pain was immediate. It felt like I'd put my guts through a blender. I coated myself in ice as my body began heating up.

Process failing.

Stop. The pain didn't go away right away. Exchange mana for health. The pain faded away quickly after that.

"Alright," I snorted, "Now that I know what to expect."

System try again.

Forcing earth affinity.

That same pain came back full force, but pain was something I could handle. Savannah, and Ethan caught up to me midway through my second try. Two or three tries later my ice dome melted enough for Savannah, and Ethan to see through. I was blocking them from feeling my pain, but I hadn't shut them out completely. They knew they were being partially blocked out of my head.

Ethan knew why. Savannah did not. Her bond wasn't strong enough yet. The darker his look got at each attempt the closer Savannah was to figuring it out. I had to replenish my mana twice from the dragon crystal.

On my thirty-first try I finally got it.

Earth affinity level 1

"Finally," I snorted as I huffed.

I shook off the pain, and stretched.

"What?" Savannah was tense since my fluctuating mana had attracted some beasts while I was working on getting my earth affinity.

I reared up, and slammed my hands into the ground. The ground shifted as frail earth spikes shot out in front of me.

"Earth?" Savannah looked almost lost, "You can manipulate earth now?"

"Yeah," Ethan frowned at me angrily, "And he hurt himself to get it."

I checked my watch as Savannah looked at the angry Ethan with surprise. Ethan almost never got angry with me.

"It's fine I didn't do too much damage," I lashed my tail.

I didn't like Ethan being angry at me. Pain was something I could handle easily.

"Didn't do too much damage?" Now Savannah was getting angry as well.

"Just a little internal damage," I chuckled to myself, "I healed it already."

"It doesn't matter if you healed it already," Ethan grabbed my horn yanking my head down to his eye level, "You can't just hurt yourself for a little bit of power."

"Tell me Savannah," I snorted angrily, "How useful will having control over four elements be in the future? The longer I wait to gain elemental affinities the harder it will be for me to do so."

"But gaining an affinity shouldn't be painful," Savannah snapped.

"Gaining an affinity I'm not normally compatible with," I started spouting absorbed knowledge, "Is painful, and potentially dangerous. That's why its so rare for any creature to have all the elements."

Elemental threshold reached. User has become ruler class dragon. Evolution has begun.

I waited for something to happen, but I didn't feel anything.

"Are you listening to us at all?" Ethan shook my head.

"Not really," I stated bluntly, "I thought something was going to happen."

"Something did happen," Savannah pointed at my horns drawing Ethan's gaze up.

I couldn't see my horns so I didn't know what she was pointing at. I pulled my head out of Ethan's grip.

"What is it?" I narrowed my eyes at them.

"Hey," Ethan exclaimed as he looked down, "It happened to his claws too."

Evolution complete.

I looked down at my talons. Instead of just having thin strips of color all of my claws were tipped with four colors which curved slightly as it faded back to black. Gold was the main color, then dark blue as the next biggest, light sky blue, and a thin strip of green. I guess that was why it didn't hurt me at all. It was just a simple slight color change.

"I hope this doesn't affect my human form," I looked at my talons closely.

"Why would it affect your human form?" Savannah smiled nervously.

I tried to pull up an earth wall so I could switch forms, but earth was completely different than all my other elements so all I did was bring up a shaky bit of dirt. This is hard. I shook my head, and opted to use ice. Switching forms, and pulling on fresh clothes quickly. I melted the ice, and scratched the back of my neck.

I stretched my arms upwards as I yawned. Repeated injury was a quick way to wear yourself out.

"It did change your appearance though," Savannah stared at me.

"How bad is it?" I frowned.

"I doubt anyone else would notice," Savannah chuckled as she snapped a photo.

She came up to me, and showed me the photo. My hair was a couple shades darker, and the last millimeter had a slight tinge of the elemental colors. I tried to change my hair color.

Transformation proficiency too low to hide ruler rank status.

I was more worried about the elemental colors on the tips of my hair, but the amount of color was so minimal that it was difficult to tell that my hair was any color except brown. My sharp vision was one of the reasons I could pick up that smidge of color. What worried me most was what if the color in my hair became more defined later on. My transformation into human was my most used transformation. How could I not be proficient enough?

System how do I become proficient enough to hide my ruler rank status?

Physical camouflage skill must evolve into the shapeshifting skill.

Ok. How do I do that?

User has not met level requirement.

Ok. Then what is the level requirement?

Level 20. Adolescent body required to evolve skill. Would user like system to set skill for automatic upgrade when requirements have been met?

(Yes) (No)

Yes. I pondered that for a second as I got walking. Shapeshifting skill huh? I didn't know there was an upgrade above, and beyond physical camouflage. Did that mean that I wouldn't lose the ability to take human form after all?

No spoilers naturally, but I have no problems adressing any confusion or plot holes you might stumble on. I try to be forshadowing in some of my writing, but sometimes it just comes out as confusing.
