Chapter 16: Meetings

Alise sat in the back of the unmarked squad car as they drove down the interstate. Veronica and Dan sat in the front of the vehicle and Dan was driving. All of this was going to be difficult, she needed to meet someone in a position of authority, but everyone had insisted that she not openly display the source until then. However, getting the adult world to take an eleven-year old seriously was turning into a very tedious task. She wanted to fly over to the White house, break the doors down and sit down with the President, but that is not how an emissary behaves. She really didn't want to misplace the trust the others put in her. She would follow the plan, meet with the investigators Dalvin had spotted snooping around the mountain and have them introduce her to their superior, the rinse and repeat until she got to the top. Most likely a state governor is all the higher this strategy would get her. From there she could use the source to climb higher. There were a lot of risks to this, but Alise was confident now that nothing short of an army could stand against her. Although she would have failed her mission if it came to that. Her goal was to peacefully establish communications with a national leader. This was the first step in project 'Utopia', she could not afford to fail, no she would not fail. Alise steeled herself mentally as the car pulled up into the parking lot of a governmental office. Veronica and Dan got out of the car and opened the door for her,"This is a department of internal affairs office, the director said he would meet you here. So if you would please follow us." Veronica said. As they entered the lobby Alise addressed Veronica,"If you don't mind I would like to use the restroom to freshen up a bit before my meeting." Veronica looked at her a little puzzled but replied,"Sure, this way." She followed her down a hall and entered the restroom. Inside one of the ladies stalls she activated the source and just let it flow, filling the surrounding room. This was source sense, a new skill she had learned. There were many uses for it, but right now she was searching for the electric wave pattern that cameras gave off. She found several but none of them were pointed at the stalls, good now she could change. Activating another thread of the source she bent the light in front of her making a full mirror in midair, then she slowly began lacing the light around her. She decided to mimic the busines suit that Veronica wore, she didn't care much for black, so she altered the color to a light blue. Surveying herself in the mirror she was satisfied, the illusion wouldn't hold up if someone touched it, but it looked a lot nicer than her training garb. As she exited the restroom she noticed the shocked look on the two agents faces, that's right try to guess how I did it. Veronica recovered first,"Nice outfit, it looks good on you. Now if you would follow me ill take you to a waiting room." They continued down the hall, and she was led into one of the rooms on the right. Veronica motioned for her to sit in one of the chairs in the room,"If you will wait here we will go see if the Director has arrived." The two of them exited the room and closed the door. Alise had kept up her source sense since leaving the bathroom, and immediately spread it through the room and into the hall outside the room. There were several cameras in the room, and they were pointed at her, outside in the hall the two agents had not left but instead were joined by several other people. This troubled her, they were up to something. She could feel sound waves, so she knew they were talking, but her skill had not reached a level to tell her what they were saying. She began to prepare herself for the worst, they probably still had no intentions to help her. So was this a move to capture her? As if to answer the door was opened and something was tossed in and immediately closed again. This time she heard the metallic 'click' of a lock. The small canister that had been tossed in began rapidly emitting a gas into the room. Alise warped the light in front of all the cameras blacking them out. Then she used air to push the canister to the far side of the room and built a wall of hardened air to separate her half of the room from the canisters. Alise was starting to get frustrated, how was she going to get these people to take her seriously. She had little choice she was going to have to pull out a big spell, but she was going to have to use one that would leave them guessing as to what actually happened. Alise pressed her hands against her stomach were the source stone was sewn to the inside of her garb, she pressed in firmly against her skin and began to focus with everything she had. He senses flooded the building and began locating her targets, one hundred cameras and forty-six people. The eight people outside the door began moving towards it, now was the time to strike. A smile spread across her lips,"Oblivion!", she unleashed all the source she could muster to the point she nearly collapsed. In a single instant all light within the building was sealed plunging it into true darkness at the same time she sharpened her senses and struck every person in the back of the head with a blow of air. She walked up to the door, with her source sense active the whole building lay before her eyes like a3-d hologram, it was a little disorienting at first, but she had become used to it. Alise had done a lot of blindness training in the cave, at first it was just a countermeasure to spells she had come up with, but as she practiced more she realized source sense was far more valuable than eyesight, especially when combined with total darkness. Even though it removed all textures from everything the wire frame world it created gave her an unprecedented sense of awareness, plus in the wire world she could see source, like her shimmering coat of light refraction painted on the ceiling and walls of the building. So with a practiced grace she dismantled the wire frame of the lock in the door, and it vanished. She went into the hall and scanned the bodies laying in the hallway, good there was only one female, that should be Veronica. Picking up the woman and slinging her over her shoulder she made her way to the exit. Some people stirred but nobody had regained consciousness yet. She hoped she had not accidentally hurt anyone. As she exited the building she released her spell over it. The brightness of the sun after being in total darkness hurt her eyes, but they grew accustomed to it after a few moments. She walked over to the car she had arrived in and set Veronica down leaning her against the car. She patted her gently on the cheeks coaxing her back to reality. Veronicas' eyes slowly fluttered open, then they darted wildly looking at her surroundings, she hastily scrambled to her feet." What....what happened?", Alise chuckled,"Everyone decided to take a nap, so I brought you out here to see if you could take me to a real meeting this time." A complex look spread across Veronica's face, part confusion, fear, and defeat,"How is this even possible!?" Alise looked strain into her eyes hardening her glare the best she could,"I'll make this as clear as I can. How I did this is top-secret, but believe me I can do it again and again. Stop looking at me as a child, I am an emissary and my mission is very important, it will change this world to its core. But you keep delaying me, and I am running out of patience for your little games. So are you willing to cooperate with me or not?"

For the second time Veronica found herself studying the strange girl in the back seat of her car. The first time she had simply been amazed at how skilled and dangerous the little girl was and had made plans to capture her. She was no longer amazed, she was afraid. Among her calls to request a real meeting with the local director of operations she had received a call from Dan. He had told her every person in the office had been knocked unconscious and that not a single one of them knew how. She had no idea how Alise had done that, she couldn't even begin to guess, and that's what scared her. Although her actions did manage to get her what she wanted, after news of what happened made its way up the chain of command, they definitely wanted to meet her. Veronica just hoped this didn't escalate any further, she wasn't sure what Alise was capable of, but it wasn't much of a stretch to go from forty unconscious people to dead ones. She prayed silently that the higher ups were not planning an assult, and she was driving into a soon to be bloodbath. Alise broke her line of thought as she suddenly spoke,"You know I have been thinking about why you're afraid. Isn't it funny how humans are, the very moment we encounter something we can't control or is unknown we become afraid. We don't all respond the same, for some fear becomes terror, others it becomes courage as they push into the unknown, and others fear becomes hatred. But why, I'm sure there are many answers to that, ya know. Also, I think I know one of those answers, it because of people, we did it to ourselves. A father suddenly killing his family, a leader plunging his whole country into war, things like that. Over thousands of years the inhumanity of humanity has trained us to be afraid. After all you never know when the little girl beside you will turn into a monster." Alise's voice started to get shaky at the end and Veronica glanced into the mirror, she had tears falling down her cheeks, but she continued talking her voice unsteady,"I'm not a monster ya know, I'm sorry. I got too arrogant, and I did things I shouldn't have. I'm sorry, please Veronica don't be afraid of me." Veronica looked away from the mirror, her own eyes becoming a little moist. She didn't know what to say to that, she had few interactions with children let alone one like this. Then it came to her, despite all her bold talk and actions, fear was in each of us, mabey then even if deep inside her Alise was afraid as well. She looked back to the mirror, Alise was still rubbing at tears in her eyes,"It's ok, I believe you and I know your not a monster. I apologize as well for letting my fear get the best of me."

*********************************

As the car pulled up to another building Alise could see that there were soldiers and police stationed outside. Despite this she was feeling much better. She and Veronica had switched their conversation to music and movies and had a very pleasant talk the rest of the way here. Having had someone so visibly afraid of her had been a very troubling and sobering experience. The others had been right she had to be very careful of what she did. Even holding back like she had, was still too far. She looked up at Veronica,"Well you ready for this?" Veronica gave her a wry smile,"You make it sound like I'm your accomplice. Sorry but I doubt I'll be allowed past the front door." Alise laughed,"Your my friend now, don't worry I can get you in. Come on lets get this over with." With that she opened the door and left the car, Veronica close behind her. As she approached the building were a line of soldiers stood in front of the door she stopped, placed her feet together, rolled her shoulders back, and raised her hand to her forehead in a salute. She held this pose until the soldier in charge of guarding the door slowly raised his hand and saluted back to her,"You a military fan girl or something?" Alise raise her voice and responded,"Sir!, my father was a soldier, Sir! I was taught to respect the military, Sir!" The soldier started laughing,"Well I say he did damn fine job, mabey to fine if the report we received was accurate." she tried to stand even straighter,"I apologize for the misconduct, Sir! My use of force was out of line and I take full responsibility, Sir!" He stopped laughing,"So you really took out forty-six people unarmed?", she hesitated,"Yes I did, Sir!" Some of the other soldiers whistled softly, the officer looked her up and down,"How?" Alise responded,"Classified information, Sir!" The officer chuckled again,"Ok, follow me then. Boys stay on your toes, we got ourselves a live one here." He spun around and headed towards the doors, and Alise called after him,"Permission to bring my confidant, Ms Veronica. I would be inclined to stop further talks if it is not allowed, Sir!" The officer looked at Veronica and then back to her,"Hell this whole mess is as unorthodox as anything I have seen, permission granted." They all walked through the doors to the building and Veronica and Alise followed, she looked back at Veronica and gave her a little wink. The officer led them to a set of double doors with a sign that labeled it as a conference room. The soldiers went in first and lined up along the walls of the room, the officer then led them in and had them sit at the far end of a long rectangular wood table. At the other end three men sat with their gazes fixed on her. The officer introduced them, although she knew who two of them were, she had studied the names and faces of possible people she would encounter on this mission. The man to her left was General Bradly Strauss, in the middle was Gary Steinberg Director of the F.B.I., and on the right Assistant director of the C.I.A. Allen Ross. She nodded in greeting to each of their introductions,"I am Alise the Azure, First of the Holy knights and emissary of our Order." The general looked like he was trying not to laugh, the C.I.A. guy just studied her with keen eyes, but the F.B.I. director slapped the table,"Look this is as high as you go until we get some answers, as far as I'm concerned your a threat, if these other fellows didn't find your actions so intriguing you would have never even come this far. So you better start talking and enough of the games!" Bradly spoke up,"Calm down Gary, we will get nowhere like that." Gary just shot him a glare. Alise was a little shocked, was that how she had come across to Veronica, she felt a little ashamed." I apologize for the incident involving your agents Director Gary, I was out of line.", she lowered her head, then looked back up at them,"I will tell you what I am allowed at this point, so that I can have negotiations with the President." All three men had looks of disbelief on their faces, but she continued," The Order is going to establish a new nation, we would like recognition from a major power to ease the transition with other nations." Bradly spoke again,"And where would this nation be established at?", Alise looked at him,"On another planet nearby, to ease any tensions with earth's nations. We would also like to build a gateway on the moon for future travel and trade." The looks of shock swept through the room like a plague and Allen Ross finally spoke,"That is a claim that is as absurd as it is bold, does your Union have a means to even begin such a task?" Alise turned towards him,"Yes, you can consider our technology hundreds of years ahead of earths." Gary leaned forward,"What proof do you have that anything you say is true?" Alise shrugged,"My hands are still tied a little on that, but fore some proof how about this, there are sixteen cameras filming this room, each of you and the officer behind me is wearing a wire tap, Garry and Allen both have concealed weapons, Gary's' at his waist and Allen has one at his waist and another on his leg above his right foot. In addition to that there is a soldier to my right behind a false wall with a weapon aimed at me. All this information comes from a small simple device on me." Bradly nodded,"That is proof enough at this stage, I believe the young lady is correct, the information she posses is dangerous and should not be given out lightly." Allen nodded to him,"Yes I concur, it would be impossible to ascertain all that on skill alone, her claims of a device are valid. And such a device would be invaluable to any intelligence agency, I regret that even that much had to be made known." Gary looked at both of them,"What are you kidding me, just like that!" Allen looked at him,"You must understand, we used every method of remote observation we had, she passed through three scanners on the way here. As far as we can tell she is wearing the clothes on her back and has a small piece of metal not much bigger than a keyring, and absolutely nothing electronic. Yet she knows every little detail of this room. Her claims have to be taken with a measure of seriousness." Gary slumped in his chair,"Fine, I don't like it one bit but ill play along. You guys better not cut me out of the picture though, I want to get to the bottom of all this." Allen smiled at him,"Ill see what I can do.", then turned to her,"So, Emissary Alise I'll get on that meeting right away, in the meantime i hope you would indulge yourself in my hospitality." Alise wasn't sure how she felt about that, this guy reminded her of a fox, she narrowed her eyes,"Alright, but I'm gonna keep my eye on you. You're a sly one I can tell." Allen burst into laughter,"I like her, this girl is great."
