Chapter 3: Chapter 3

Davin waited for the girl to disappear through the treeline then began to set up camp. He didn't want to hold her any longer and the use of his tools would undoubtedly bring a slew of questions from her. He was a little disappointed to be discovered as soon as he came to this world but it could have been far worse. He could have emerged in the middle of a town or such which could have even turned into a violent situation. So having just one child discover him was a pretty good outcome. Given her demeanor it was even better, the child seemed very amicable. Tomorrow he could obtain a lot of information from her about the place in which he now found himself. Of course, he would have to answer her questions as well but that was the essence of fair exchange and to be expected. He recalled their interactions and smiled. He had expected fear or nervousness but Alise's rabid excitement had taken him aback. Yes, this wasn't bad at all, in fact, it could turn out to be very useful.

As he opened up his case Dalvin took out the tools he would need to set up camp. He chuckled to himself, perhaps he should put on a display for his young guest tomorrow. With that thought in mind, he got to work. First, he took his accumulator and attached it to a substance analyzer. taking a small stone from the cave floor he dropped it into the analyzer, small runes began to appear in a metal disk on the side of the analyzer. Dalvin went to his case and grabbed a few elemental rods to match the makeup of the caves rock. Of course, he could build out of anything but he personally believed that matching the composition of your surroundings had the best long term environmental effects. He inserted the rods into his accumulator and adjusted the output of each element. Pointing the tip of the accumulator a few inches from the ground Dalvin activated it. The accumulator which resembled a handheld drill began spinning and emitted a white light at its tip. Then stone began emerging from the light binding to any surface it came into contact with. Dalvin walked around the cave drawing the outline of his shelter and an adjacent storage area. Then stacking the lines of stone on top one another he built up the walls then the ceiling. He did this all from the inside so when he was done he was on the inside of the structure. It was dark but Dalvin had pretty good night vision so it wasn't a problem. Pulling a few source stones and matching metal rings he began making windows. He embedded the ring into the stone then set the source stone in it. With his pen, he etched the dimensions of the window and the activation commands. He touched the stone and a rectangle vanished from the cave wall leaving a nice clean cut opening. He touched it again and the cave wall was restored. Good, it was working properly. In a similar fashion, he set the door to the storage room. For the main door, however, he used his smelter and a lace rod to draw a door like the one on his warehouse. The runes for this were far more complicated but well within Dalvin's skillset. He stepped back and looked at his work, then nodded in approval. Now for some finishing touches, he built a table and chairs with some wood mugs and plates from a sample of a nearby tree. He inserted water accumulation stones on the mugs so the could be filled by tapping the source stone. Then he constructed a fire pit with a source stone burner and condensed some nearby dead trees into fuel rods. Next, he built a water pump over the stream and added a filter and basin to it. Dalvin looked around at everything and nodded again, not a bad little camp. Next up food.

The sun had already gone down so Dalvin found himself stalking his dinner in the dark. His prey a four-legged creature with a set of imposing antlers was very elusive. He wasn't sure if it could see better or was using one of its other senses. Whichever it was it had taken nearly two hours to get in striking distance. Considering he had spotted it within fifteen minutes of leaving the cave it had been the merry little chase. Dalvin slipped a pulse scan stone from his belt. This was normally used in mine surveying but he had an idea. He activated the stone and threw it at the creature, the stone activated with a brilliant green flash. Startled the creature fled with surprising speed and grace. Dalvin marveled at its bounding run, such a strange creature. He fetched his scan stone and returned to camp.

Back at his camp Dalvin constructed a small stone box next to his fire pit. Then using lace rod he drew runes all over it using data from the scan stone. Then he fetched the Eye. Holding it in one hand he placed the other inside the activation sigil on the box. The Eye glowed softly and the box immediately filled with flesh. He chuckled, traveling the universe creating organic material, these things required teams of people and source stones. The Eye was ever impressive, he had to open his mind now all the limitations were gone. If he had any intention of keeping it and himself safe he had to break his barriers and become a source master.

As he chewed on a piece of meat Dalvin pondered how to improve his combat ability. There were no source casters here and he very well couldn't begin attacking the natives. Perhaps this wasn't thought out as well as he had presumed. He should have brought a caster with him. No there is no way he could have trusted them. But without a sparring partner, he had no way to judge his skills. Dalvin ruffled his hair, ahhh what a mess. He was at an impasse there was noth...wait there was one thing. It would be a slow progression but if all went well time would be one asset he had. Yes, that was the answer, he would make an apprentice and he already had a candidate. Sure it would probably take a hundred or two hundred years for them to reach a combat-ready state but that shouldn't be a problem. Dalvin smiled satisfied with his conclusions.

He immediately got to work on their beginner gear. First, he made to staves with the ability to create and project water. These were perfect trainee weapons because the water was not very lethal but required a larger amount of control to master. Next, he made two rings of air shielding. Even tho it was called air shielding it didn't have to be air. The ring simply allowed the user to temporarily condense any structure within a short radius. It just so happened that that was usually the air in front of the caster. Last but not least he made two bracelets of Protection from Water. These would repel hydrogen from the user's area but were draining to use but would be handy if they failed to block with their shields. Now he had the basic preparation done the rest would have to wait until tomorrow. Dalvin sat down at his table to rest, then it occurred to him he had no idea how long night was. Well given how fast it had traveled the sky during the day it shouldn't be much more than twelve hours. He finished his meal an wondered what Alise did at night.
