Chapter 10: Pain

-Melanie

I sat there, next to the small bookcase, crying my heart out. Who will look up to now?

My thoughts were interrupted with somebody stepping into the room. Startled, I looked up to see a boy frozen in his place, staring at me. He was carrying a cardboard box in his hands and he looked confused.

I quickly wiped my tears and stood up. "Sorry I was just," I started to explain.

"It's okay. You can stay here for as long as you need to." He gave me a sad smile and went back into the store. I slowly sat back down.

A few minutes later, he came back with a small cup of water and sat next to me. "Thanks." I slowly drank the water and sighed. I looked at him, hesitantly. "Are you related to Cienna?"

He looked at the palms of his hands. "Yeah. She was my mom." I could see sadness in his eyes. "What about you? I mean, you must have been pretty close to her."

I shrugged. "You can say that. Cienna was just a really important person in my life." I sniffled. "Even though she didn't remember who I was." I mumbled. Glancing at him, I asked, "What's your name?"

He widened his eyes at the question and touched the back of his neck. "Um. It's, uh." He looked at me for a minute and sighed. "It's Gray. My name's Gray."

"Oh, Gray. That's a nice name." I smiled.

He stared at me with a blank face. "I'm Gray. Gray. Like, Gray."

I looked at him weirdly. "Okay, I know. I heard you."

"Wait. You don't know?"

"What do I not know?" I asked him slowly.

"Oh, thank god." He let out a sigh of breath.

"What? Why are you relieved? About what?" I tried to wrap my head around what he was trying to say.

Gray just chuckled at me. "It's nothing." He smiled.

I frowned.

"What's yours?" He asked me.

"I'm Me-" My phone suddenly rang, cutting me off. I looked at the caller and sighed. "H-Hello?"

"Where the hell are you? Are you in Cienna's stupid flower shop again? I told you not to go there? You bitc-" I hung up before my father could finish his sentence.

"Oh my God. I-I have to go." I stood up with my purse. "I'm so sorry Gray. I have to go." I quickly walked out of the room, back into the shop.

He trailed behind me, his footsteps coming down on the hard floor. "Wait!"

"Gray. I'm sorry. I'll see you next time. Maybe. Bye." I ran out the light purple door without hearing what he had to say.

I bursted in through the house with my heart pounding. I shut the door behind me and looked around the house. In the living room, there were bottles and bottles of beer. They were all empty.

I felt a sharp pang of pain as my hair was pulled from behind me. "Ow! Let me go!" I shouted and tried to get my hair out of his grip.

His gruff voice boomed next to my ear. "I thought I told you to stay away from Cienna's flower shop. That hoe is dead anyway." Tears started to sting my eye.

"Dad! You're drunk! Just stop!" I yelled as his grip tightened around my hair.

"Promise to never go back there. Ever again. You understand!?" He spit at me.

"Okay! Okay! Please! Just let go!" I screamed. He threw me on the ground and left me. A high pitched sound rang in my ears as the world spinned.

I woke up from the dream, my pillow wet from my tears. I looked at my clock, ringing next to me. 6:42 am.
